Starting point is 00:00:00 Iowa City is an absolute madhouse with college game day on campus. And it was announced the celebrity picker. You're not going to believe this. Caitlin Clark makes her return back to Iowa City. You are Locked-on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Man, I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. This is a pack show on your Hawkeye pregame show.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Getting ready for Iowa, Ohio State. We got some news from the Iowa women's basketball program as they pick up a big commitment from literally and figuratively, a top 50 player nationally at 6'5 coming in. We'll be joined by Tom Kakert. We'll go on the scene in Iowa City. He was there earlier today. We'll get boots on the ground.
Starting point is 00:00:56 Tom Kaker right after interviewing a number of the people with ESPN's College Game Day. We'll get the latest and break things down. What's it going to take for Iowa to pull off the upset victory against Ohio State? The environment in Iowa City is already incredible as we sit here recording late on Friday night after I wrapped up my high school football duties. The environment all day long, boy, what a scene it has been. It can only imagine what it's going to look like on Saturday morning. And we start, though, today with the announcement that was made on Friday that Caitlin Clark is going to be the celebrity guest picker on Game Down.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Now, this was always the easiest choice. This was always something that I think every single one of us, our mind race right away to CC22. Getting the call and making it happen, there was one little problem. She was still playing basketball and playing playoff basketball until Thursday night. With the launch of her new shoe, they already had this put together. And what an incredible confluence event with all this coming together at the same time. With game day returning for the first time in 20 years,
Starting point is 00:01:59 coupled with the launch of her shoe. You can argue why it took so long. That definitely was a piece of it. But this is great to see it for a number of reasons. And as Hawkeye fans, I think all of us would like to see more Caitlin Clark in Iowa City. Would like to do it for the betterment of the women's basketball program for the betterment of the university, the athletic department, all the way across the board. We're talking about one of the most famous athletes in America. She's from West Des Moines.
Starting point is 00:02:27 She grew up in the state. She played her four years in Iowa City. Now, she's still doing great things in the WMBA. Now, there's a level of discourse with that league that is ugly and not enjoyable. We leave that to the side. We move into what this means and what it means going forward. Yes, it would have been fun to see different names and different ideas that were out there. I mentioned earlier this week, my favorite idea was not a celebrity, but the guest picker be,
Starting point is 00:02:56 what are the kids from the children's hospital? And speaking of ESPN today, so many. great pictures of the cast making their way to the University of Iowa, Children's Hospital, just how great that was. And I will tell you, as I was sitting doing my radio show throughout the midday's, 11 to 1, by the way, on ESPN Des Moines and the Rush Radio Network. You can catch me each weekday from 11 to 1. During that, we had Pat McAfee show on.
Starting point is 00:03:24 I am not a huge Pat McAfee guy. He is not my cup of tea. I get a kick out of them from time to time. I get some chuckles, but for the most part, he's a little different, maybe a little younger crowd is probably the way that he skews, but I get the enjoyment, I get what he does, and I get the way that he definitely riles up the fan base. And in game day, he is the guy that makes the show at this point
Starting point is 00:03:48 from the field goal kicking challenge and what we're going to have there, to his chance with the crowd. He is entertainment and brings that entertainment factor, obviously, to that. But as he's doing his show during today, boy, I had some big fomo. Fear of missing out, it was at a high, high level. Seeing what Iowa City looked like. Seeing the way that it's filled in.
Starting point is 00:04:10 And I know things have changed and evolved, but I've seen plenty of those sets before. I've seen hits on game day. I've seen all the different elements that have been there before, and there are great environments. But Iowa City, there was something special. And seeing some interviews here on Friday night with some kids that have already been lined up.
Starting point is 00:04:29 I saw one on social, media with a couple of girls that were the first in line at like 3.45 this afternoon. They're lining up. Going to stay there throughout the night and, of course, be ready and be the first in the queue to get in to college game day. The environment, the opportunity, it is all in front of Iowa here. The football game, we'll see come 2.30, what that's going to look like. But the buildup, what this all means is so awesome as a Hawkeye fan.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Look, we know what we are for the most part. of Iowa. Lucky little Iowa don't have the same money as an Ohio state. We don't spend on the same level as them. We are a developmental program for the football team. The developmental program really for almost all the teams. That's what you have to be at Iowa. But it's something special. And it's something that has kept me here in this state for my whole life. Even as other opportunities have arisen throughout the years, I made the decision to stay here. made the decision because Iowa is special. It's special to me.
Starting point is 00:05:36 It's special to my family. And I know if you're listening right now, I'm going to guess it's pretty special to you. And it could have been the four years he spent in Iowa City and college. It could have been just growing up a Hawkeye fan. Whatever it is, whatever that connection is to the Hawkeyes, it is real. It is something that hits you in just a different way.
Starting point is 00:05:58 And to see that show, up on the national scene and hear national people speak of Iowa City. I wish I was there already. I can't wait to get up and get to the tailgate and get fired up and get game day and everything that's going to come along with it. This is something that is very hard to describe. It's just that feeling, that reaction, what it does and what does for us as fans, cheering on these kids in college
Starting point is 00:06:30 where some people think that's absolutely crazy but I wouldn't have it any other way and I love having the opportunity each and every day to talk with you as Hawkeye fans. Am I always the rosiest person? No. Do I get frustrated? There's no doubt.
Starting point is 00:06:48 But I was special. Being a Hawkeye fan is special. You saw that in a small way during McAfee show and on Friday with all the ESPN cameras rolling and you're going to see that continue. This is going to be big time. This is what we waited for.
Starting point is 00:07:05 The environment, absolutely incredible. Kudos to everybody. Let's have some fun. Let's have a great Saturday. Let's show everybody what it's like to be a Hawkeye fan. A couple other notes here at the top of the show before we bring in Tom Kaker, who we talked to while he was in Iowa City, is on the football field. And we talked about this matchup.
Starting point is 00:07:28 against Ohio State a ton. And you can go back and watch plenty of that throughout the course of the week. Find any of the old podcast. We broke things down. We did a crossover with our Ohio State guys. We've hit it from basically every angle. I am X and O'd out. Taking a look at numbers.
Starting point is 00:07:45 Take a look at factors. What I believe is going to happen. We've hit all that. But one thing that we haven't talked about is the college football playout. I haven't talked about it really at all this week. and what this game is going to mean. When you think about it and dare to dream what an Iowa victory would mean, you don't want to say lock because there's no such thing as a lock.
Starting point is 00:08:10 However, you talk about putting yourself in the catbird seat to get into the college football playoff, a win here, absolutely would do that. Now, we know this is not in a vacuum. It depends on also what is happening outside the country. But if you know me and you're every day and you watch us every day, you know I like numbers. And here are some numbers that made it much more easier, I think, to digest of what happens, win or lose in this game against the Buckeyes.
Starting point is 00:08:40 This comes from McKenzie Brooks, who does analytics and a lot of different number things over at CVSports.com. McKenzie has these numbers. I was playoff percentage scenarios. 11 and 1 with a win over Ohio State. 97%. Feels pretty good. 11 and 1, the only loss coming to Ohio State, 75%.
Starting point is 00:09:02 I would have the number a little bit higher than that. I find it incredibly difficult for Iowa at 11 and 1, even if with the loss in the Big 10 championship game, not being in, we'll argue her numbers. Okay. 10 and 2 with the win over Ohio State, 75%. 10 and 2 with a loss. to Ohio State, and then it would be one other loss this season, regardless of who it is.
Starting point is 00:09:25 She has the percentage at 55%. 9-3, Iowa doesn't hold up. That's what she says on that one. Completely agree because of the schedule and the way that is broken down to this point, I definitely can get behind that. That shows you what a win does here. We talk about college football playoff, and not a lot because he's still got to win games. You still got to finish it.
Starting point is 00:09:44 But boy, it takes it to another level. This opportunity for I. to shut up the doubters, to stop the negativity, to have fun and do it against a team that does it in a different way in Ohio State. Let's have a Saturday. Let's have an incredible day on the field. Let's go to Iowa City coming up next. Tom Kaker talked with him earlier today as he had an opportunity to interview Stanford Steve, along with Reese Davis from ESPN Game Day. We'll get a couple of thoughts about that.
Starting point is 00:10:17 We'll talk about the environment, the launch of Caitlin Clark's, new shoe and Caitlin coming back celebrity picker just how awesome that is big big news in iowa city is katelyn's coming back to iwa city big moment big day game day is here we come back on the other side tom kaker joins us stay right there this is locked on hawkeyes welcome to your most rewarding nfl season ever only on fan duel how rewarding are we talking more rewarding than a touchdown as time expires. Starting point is 00:12:02 Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. Had an opportunity again to talk with Tom Caker a little bit earlier today in Iowa City. He was right in the midst of the madness during the middle of the day. What a scene as we get ready for game day coming up on Saturday morning. Looks like an incredible scene already in Iowa City. Speaking of being in Iowa City, joining us right now. Tom Kekert from hawkeye report.com. Tom joins us as we take a look at everything happening, Ohio State and Iowa coming up.
Starting point is 00:12:34 We preview the game and you're already experiencing it, Tom, over in Iowa City. The game day crew set up there, had some media availability. A busy Friday as we get ready for the game tomorrow for you, Tom Kaker. It is. I'm down in the bowels of everything down here in downtown Iowa City. We just got done talking to Stanford and Steve and to Reese Davis. And I've got the Caitlin Clark thing set up. Kirk Farrance is on with Pat McAfee right now.
Starting point is 00:13:06 I can imagine. And this is just the precursor to what's going to be happening on Saturday morning. Yeah. As college game day is going to be there. Tom, you know I like history. That's what happens when you start to get old. You like to go back in time. Take us to the scene, as you remember,
Starting point is 00:13:21 at 20 years ago. and that matchup against the Buckeyes. We know the game didn't go very well with Anthony Gonzalez running crossing routes all over the field. However, take us into the scene. Remind a little bit because I might have had some barley and hops moving through my system. I need some help remembering. One of my favorite memories about that is my buddy Toby came up from Florida, and he had helped a bunch of Iowa fans going down to Florida in those early parents years
Starting point is 00:13:47 when they were down in Miami and everything. And he wanted to experience Kinnick. And so he came up that week. and stayed with me and we had a great time. And we took about 500 hawk-eye report.com signs that had go hawks on them and distributed them to all the students who are going in to college game day that morning. So we were up at like 6 a.m. and they're all down there. And it was just so much fun to kind of be down there and experience some of that and
Starting point is 00:14:16 see what that was like. And obviously the game didn't go the way we hoped it would. but it was still such a cool environment and just seeing it here today and talking to Reese Davis and talking to Stanford Steve about how excited they are to be here was just so much fun today and hopefully the game lives up to this this sort of the scene that's already being set there. Yeah, I definitely know that I heard yesterday on college football live, Zuba Mahente had Stanford Steve on. He brought up that I told him I'd heard Stanford Steve twice during the summer, bring it up on his podcast, that
Starting point is 00:14:52 He wanted to get to Iowa City for the first time. So you have that component. It's incredible. And then this confluence of events, too, with the launch of Caitlin Clark and her shoe coming out. They already had this plan. Just talk about an absolute just wild. Just sometimes things happen for a reason. And it definitely has that feeling this week in Iowa City.
Starting point is 00:15:11 They literally have a basketball court set up on Dubuque Street right now. And there's people playing basketball. And there's a semi. that I'm literally probably 15 feet from right now. There's a huge line of people waiting to get in to buy Caitlin shoes or Caitlin gear. I mean, anybody who thinks the Caitlin Clark phenomenon is waning a bit, n-uh. It's still as strong as it's ever been.
Starting point is 00:15:42 And it's fun, you know, see chaos around there. I just saw Tyler Brown and Jalen Watson and Hawkins walking around there. kind of getting the experience of this because they haven't left yet. And they're going to classes and coming by here and just seeing all those guys. So Jose and Vanessa walking around after class. It's just, it's such a cool kind of confluence of events here in Iowa City right now. It really is.
Starting point is 00:16:09 You know, watching it, we got it here on the studio. We're watching it right now with Kirk up there as he's talking with McAfee. I've seen these hits before. And so many times you see there are some people, milling around. They bet in Tuscaloosa for the billionth time. They bet in Columbus. This is different. The importance of this. And I want to take it now a step further as we kind to get into the game a little bit, Tom. And that is the importance of this football game.
Starting point is 00:16:33 In terms of winning, it feels like you're playing with house money. You win this one. And suddenly, we're having a completely different conversation about the past of this season. But just playing well. I've talked about that a bunch this week, Tom, the importance of keeping this game, showing some signs of life offensively because, hey, he can't hope to win at 16, 13 against Ohio State. But the other thing is that national narrative. And this is an opportunity now for Iowa football to start to change that narrative. It is.
Starting point is 00:17:01 And it's just such a huge opportunity for Iowa. And, you know, even if they play this close and they drag them in the deep water like they do, just about everybody that comes to the Kinnick Stadium, you know, if they can do that, I think it's almost as good as a win, especially if they go out and, you know, win the rest of their games or win all the one of the rest of their games. I think it gets them in that conversation for the college football playoff at the 10 and 2, and they played Ohio State to a three-point game that was decided in the final seconds. To me, that and you're playing in the toughest conference in America, that's won the last three titles, you know, that's, that's, that's, going to matter, I think, later this year. And so it's, it, I'm really excited to see what this game plays out like tomorrow. The path is still difficult and I think much more difficult, even though
Starting point is 00:17:58 this is a home game as opposed to a road game. Michigan was going to play a style that you could hang around with Jeremiah Smith, the kind of season that he is putting together right now. The passing offense is at an elite level, nearly 400 yards per game, passing per game. they are revved up in a big time way. And have we ever seen, I go back, I was actually telling my producer Drew about this a little bit earlier. Kurt's first year when they went out and took on Sabin and Michigan State and Plackville Burris looked like a man amongst boys at that time.
Starting point is 00:18:26 Now, I was a little bit more charged up than they were in that 99 Iowa football team. But still, this Jeremiah Smith is as talented of a guy as we have seen, maybe walk into Kinnick Stadium. Oh, he's incredible. I remember that game because I talked to Ken O'Keefe about it one time. and he referred to it as the Jurassic Park game because seeing Plaxico out there, it was like looking at like somebody, like one of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park against all of the little Iowa guys just trying to tackle him.
Starting point is 00:18:56 I mean, that was like 493 or something. I mean, it was, it was, it wasn't a fair fight, as Kirk would say. And, yeah, this is, the interesting thing with the Ohio State receivers, and we know all the names for the last five years. years from, you know, Emeka Buka to Arvin Harrison Jr. to Smith and Jigba to Carnal Pake. All these guys that they've had over the years. He's the only one that's kind of a name brand right now. I've got some really good young guys, the Boyk Kid, and Henry are going to be really good, but they have not kind of popped yet. And so it's like, it's not as imposing, I guess,
Starting point is 00:19:42 how I would say it, as it was a couple years ago when Iowa got boat raced out there, and they had all those good young guys, and Jeremiah Smith was a true freshman. It's a different team now. So I'm really curious to see how Phil Parker, does he double in? Does he do something unique? I'm really curious to see why Phil approaches this. Yeah, I saw him. Quarter's coverage is what Iowa runs traditionally with Phil Parker,
Starting point is 00:20:06 and he is really good Julian saying is against Quarter's coverage. We know Phil makes adjustments. He does that all the time. Sometimes it just takes a while to get there. Do they scheme up something different? I think that's going to be part of the cat and mouse game. So Tom, when you break this game down, what is the path for Iowa to have a chance in the fourth quarter?
Starting point is 00:20:25 Where weird things happen, it'll start getting dark. It won't be a night game, but we know what can happen and weird moments to hang around. What does Iowa have to do to hang around in this football? Make it a game in the fourth quarter. And then all of a sudden it creeps into Ohio State. What happened the last time they had a tight game? game earlier this year in the fourth quarter.
Starting point is 00:20:44 They melted down. You know, they lost that game in the fourth quarter against Texas on the road. So I think some of those feelings start to creep in. Iowa's got a run for 150, 170 somewhere around there. They just, you know, the only time that Iowa's gotten explosive runs this year is against the tomato cans that they played earlier. They have not gotten explosive runs against Ohio, against Michigan or Iowa, state, they've got to get some in this game, play some ball control, keep it out of Ohio
Starting point is 00:21:17 state's hands. And if they can do that, win the turnover battle, make little special teams magic. And, you know, then you got a shot. And that's all you can ask for is a one-session game in the fourth quarter. And then Kirk works as voodoo and Iowa walks out with a win. Hope that it happens should be an incredible environment. It continues on, Tom Caker, in Iowa City. right now as there is a lot happening there and it is going to be an absolute madhouse tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Can't wait until we get to kick off on Saturday. Tom Kaker at Hawkeye Report.com. Tom's got the preview up there. A lot of other elements for subscribers. People wanting to subscribe to Hawkeye Report. What do you guys still have coming up this weekend leading into the game? 60% off right now. So you can jump on board. So it's awesome.
Starting point is 00:22:04 We've got a great deal. People can join up and sign up and we'll have great coverage. I'm going to be here early tomorrow. I won't be here for game day. I'm too old for those long, that long of a day. But we'll be in the press box, bright and early covering things and talking about the game. That is Tom Kekert, hawk-eye report.com. Your one-stop shot for all things, Hawkeyes, and not just football.

They got you covered. Tanner, he's got the wrestling scene. all at Hawkeye Report. Tom, appreciate your time as always. Thanks, Trent. Talk to you soon. Starting point is 00:22:48 Good stuff, as always from Tom here, and we get the boots on the ground scene from Iowa City earlier today. An opportunity to hear from Tom and just the environment. Folks, enjoy this one. It's going to be incredible. Some final thoughts on Iowa, Ohio State. Plus, the Iowa Women's Basketball Program picks up a big commitment. We'll talk about that as we continue on. daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast, Locked on Hawkeyes.
Starting point is 00:23:17 College football is full of games you plan for all year, but sometimes the best memories come from the games you almost miss. Starting point is 00:23:45 Whether it's a rivalry game, a matchup featuring a player you must see in person or an underdog ready to make some noise. Boy, this sounds like Iowa, Ohio State. Game Day makes getting to the game simple. Think about the game on the schedule. You don't want to miss. Yes, it is Iowa, Ohio State.
Starting point is 00:24:02 I think for a lot of it, the biggest game of the weekend in college football. Game Day is in town. You want seats. You don't want to deal with all the craziness that is out there. Try to get tickets through social. media, different avenues. Game time, you know you're going to get your tickets.
Starting point is 00:24:18 And Game Day makes it easy to find them. You're going to see exactly what your cost is going to be up front. I love that about Game Day and you're taking a look and knowing exactly inside Kinnick Stadium where you're going to be. They got you covered. It is your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast, Lockdown Hawkeyes. I am Trent Condon. We'll be back with you on Saturday evening after it goes final with Iowa, Ohio State. Yes, I picked the Buckeyes this week. Yes, I picked Iowa to win last week and pull the upset against Michigan.
Starting point is 00:25:12 I'm sorry I don't have the same confidence this week, but boy, I will tell you, I hope. dead wrong. We go back to 2017. That scene was so surreal, so different than anything in the hundreds of games that I've been to in Kinnick Stadium through the last, oh, almost 40 years now, go into games. I will tell you it was an odd, eerie feeling throughout the course of that one as Iowa just cut piling it on. And this one, I was going to have to pile it on as well. Iowa cannot afford to sit back and hope they're going to grind out a victory. Aggressiveness, aggressive. That's what we need to see out of this Iowa football team. If that means taking a shot early on,
Starting point is 00:25:51 if that means just feeding the rock, time in and time out, if Ohio State proves that last week was not a fluke against Illinois and Iowa is going to be able to run the football, then you run the football. But be aggressive. Fourth and one, go for it. Don't punt the ball from midfield.
Starting point is 00:26:07 Be aggressive in this game. Pile up the points. Make the plays in the red zone. Let's hang around and give ourselves a shot. Finally, some great news on the, the Iowa women's basketball front, the return of Caitlin Clark to Iowa City. Yeah, that's absolutely a big one. I know there's been some negativity because of her relationship with Connor McCaffrey, the hurt feelings from the McCaffrey family about the firing of Fran. That
Starting point is 00:26:31 certainly feels like on the surface played a role. Haven't seen a whole lot of social media from Caitlin about Iowa athletics. Heard absolutely nothing about the run to the elite eight last year from the men's basketball team. And I don't think it takes a huge jumping to conclusion, Matt, to figure out probably what that stems from. But just having her back, having her back in Iowa City, being the face that she is for the university, the athletic department, everything that goes with with it,
Starting point is 00:27:02 is going to be absolutely awesome. Well, Iowa also picked up a commitment in women's basketball earlier today as Kalia Hartwell made her commitment. Six foot five, pretty raw player offense. at this point known more as a defensive presence. Can move well, though, for somebody at 6 foot 5, really a good defensive player. And you look at the Iowa system and what they've implemented now, going back to the one in four out offense that we're going to see coming up this season
Starting point is 00:27:29 after trying to play last year with two post players. And we saw it got bogged down. It got ugly at times. Well, now we're going to go back to maybe a little bit more free-flowing offense. You know in the middle, though, Jan Jensen is going to be able to definitely coach post players. She's been so good at that. You look at the development. I think you're going to see a big stuff this year, not just for Mava Hayden and go into another level for her preseason All-American, but even Lela Hayes coming off the bench. And you saw those small glimpses. They were
Starting point is 00:27:59 small last year and maybe not even as many as you saw from Hayden and certainly late in her freshman year. But that development is big. She knows what she's doing when it comes to that. And when she finds somebody with this frame, this kind of versatility, and this, kind of skill set. I think it definitely gets you excited. Plus, it's not where you're asking a player to come in right away and have to be a starter. That's not going to be the case for this one.
Starting point is 00:28:23 So a good commitment there. Got a 6'5 post player over Georgia. That feels pretty good, too, taking somebody from the South and making that happen, as she will be an Iowa Hawkeye. Enjoy it. Enjoy the day. Enjoy everything that goes along with it. It's been 20 years since game day has been a 10th.
Starting point is 00:28:43 and they are back. Hawkeye fans, I can tell already, you are ready. I am ready. Let's get the dub. We'll talk to you after it goes final as I'll be back here in the homestead coming up probably a few hours after the game. It takes a while to get back to West Des Moines from Iowa City. But we will be back.
Starting point is 00:29:02 We will have a somewhat rapid reaction podcast for you after it goes final. Enjoy everything that goes along with it. Make sure to hit us up on social media. Send us your pictures. send us your tailgate, send us your experience at game day. We'd love to see it all. We got you covered here each and every day with locked on hawkeyes. We'll talk to you again tomorrow until then.
Starting point is 00:29:22 Go Hawks.
