Bryce Miller made his season debut Wednesday night, and frankly, he didn't look like someone who needs a piggyback partner.
I'll break it down to more coming up.
Colby, hit it.
You are Locked-on Mariners.
Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Ahoy, Sailors, it is Friday, May 15th, 2026.
My name is Tadang Azales, and I'm joined as always by my co-coast, Colby Pat.
Now, this episode is brought to you by Fandul.
Right now, new customers can bet.
just $5 and get $150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins.
Head to fanduil.com to get started.
And on today's show, we'll get you set for the Mariners' upcoming series with Padres.
We'll also discuss Cal Raleigh's trip to the injured list a little bit more than we did yesterday.
We'll also talk about the impending returns of Matt Brash and Victor Robles.
But first, we start with Bryce Miller's season debut back on Wednesday against the Astros.
Haven't had a chance to talk about it yet.
So let's do so now.
He goes five and a third.
Came out cooking with a Velo hitting 99 several times.
We wound up averaging 97 and a half on the four seam.
Strikes out three, walks one, gives up eight hits.
He winds up being on the hook for two earned runs that scored after he left the game.
He was mostly cruising.
And then we had a 15-ish minute delay during the sixth inning after the home plate
umpire had to leave.
Then the Astros followed that up with a couple of singles and forced Miller to exit.
And it just felt like an undeserving end to an otherwise.
really good first start for Bryce.
And in the end, like I said, in the cold open, he really did not look like a guy that
needs a piggyback partner.
No.
The overall numbers weren't, you know, just the raw data or the raw numbers weren't exactly
overwhelmingly great for Bryce.
But if you watch the start, you can see the stuff is there.
And again, the one thing about, like really the only thing, the Astros do well right now
is they make a lot of contact.
They see a lot of pitches.
they fell off a lot of pitches.
Bryce's stuff actually looked really good,
which is, you know,
exactly what you're hoping for in Start 1.
You just want to see the stuff.
The results will take care of itself.
So, yeah, Bryce, the Velo was really good.
The splitter, he threw a couple really good ones.
Didn't get the whiffs, didn't get the strikeouts that you would think he would have
with the stuff that he did show in Start 1.
But those will come with that stuff.
He will get plenty of whiffs and NK.
he's going forward.
So yeah, the important thing is,
is the Vila looked really good.
He looked healthy.
He was moving on the mound just fine.
And the results were solid,
although not spectacular.
But then again, it's,
it's not hard to draw the line between like,
hey, this is what he looked like,
and this is why the numbers don't look as good as they,
as we would have thought he did,
considering how well he pitched, blah, blah, blah.
So, yeah, Bryce looked good.
No question about it.
Not great, but good.
And again, first time out, he looked healthy, and that's the important thing.
Yeah, I thought he looked really good.
You know, didn't get his first strikeout until, what, the fourth inning on a challenge by Cal?
And then got another strikeout, like right after that.
But like you said, you know, that'll come, especially if the stuff is like this.
And especially if the V-Lo is as high and as consistent as it was in this game, for the most part.
You know, he winds up throwing 81 pitches.
that's a little bit over what I was thinking.
But again, you know, you mentioned this when we were previewing his start on
Wednesday afternoon.
Like, you know, when he threw, what was it, 60 pitches in his last rehab start?
I forget exactly how many it was.
You know, he did go back out to the bullpen and throw a bit more out there.
So it seemed like he was at, you know, somewhere in the 80 to 85 range.
But, you know, once things got out of hand there in the sixth inning after the delay
and the two singles happen.
Pretty clear that, you know,
it was probably time to pull him out of there
and go to Chris while in that situation.
And unfortunately,
it just didn't work out for the Marys.
But, yeah, overall, I feel pretty good about what Bryce did.
And now he's got his next start against the white socks, correct?
Yes.
I believe it's Hancock, Kirby Gilbert, for the Padres.
So, yes.
So, yeah.
So we'll see.
how he does against that white socks lineup
but overall feeling pretty
encouraged by what we saw from Bryce
definitely didn't look anything close to
the Bryce that we saw a lot last
year while he was dealing with the
bone spurs
no he didn't
again we're not 100% sure how
the Mariners are going to manage
this piggyback
nonsense that they're going to do
so we don't know
if Bryce is do we know for sure Bryce is
starting that game or if he's going to be the
second guy in. We don't, we don't know yet because we're still not through this, you know,
this stretch of games without an off day, which is when they're, you know, they're just going to
employ this six-man rotation. So I think we're going to get one more Castillo start, right?
I think of the, I don't know. It was kind of confusing. They said they, maybe.
They said they wanted to do a six-man through the, you know, the little stretch of games here.
but then they also said so they'll do six man rotation once through and then they'll piggyback the two and it's okay but 12 games and 12 days you you do the six man twice through so do they say the next time would be the piggyback start i that's how i read it but okay whatever i must i must i must have missed that or misinterpreted it uh yeah no actually i am seeing here on on roster resource now that it is set up with bryce being the opener and then louise piggybacking
so I don't I don't know if that's just that that might just be fan graphs guessing but it does seem like yeah the the next start is set to be a piggyback start against the white socks which again is just it's really silly because like Bryce just threw 81 pitches this is kind of the point that I was trying to get to with his pitch count earlier he threw 81 pitches he was probably on schedule for about 85 of things you know went a little bit better there a little more smoothly you know
after that delay, but I just like next start, he, you would think he should be able to go 90, 95, maybe just the full slate.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's the, the pitch count goes up by about 15 in every.
So at that, so at that point, like, so at that point, again, what's the point of the piggyback other than delaying the inevitable here with Luis Castillo?
And Luis had a really nice start yesterday, you know, props to him.
But like, again, it just, it feels like they know what they want to do.
They're just unwilling to actually do it.
They just don't have the courage to do what needs to be done.
Throwback.
So, yeah, it's kind of one of those things where it's like, I don't know what this is accomplishing because like you're still demoting Luis.
Even if you like, oh, it's not a demotion.
They're figuring the spot.
Like, it's a demotion.
He's not in the starting rotation.
You're carrying one less bullpen arm.
And by the way, you're doing this this piggyback thing.
I think if they stay in schedule, it'll be that it'll be the day before the off day or two days before.
So the idea that like, oh, well, we'll piggyback them and those two guys should be able to cover eight or nine inning.
So the bullpen gets a day off once a week.
It's like, okay, yeah, but they're getting a whole day off in a couple days after that too.
So like the whole the whole piggyback thing, it just doesn't make any sense.
I see zero reason to do it other than we're trying to.
to spare Luis's feelings, which, I mean, okay, Luis is a grown man who's been a professional
athlete for, what, 15 years now, and it's been in the big leagues for like eight or nine years now.
Like, he, I don't think he's that fragile.
And I don't think he's stupid enough to look at this and be like, oh, this isn't a demotion.
Of course it is.
And he's going to handle it fine.
And he's going to pitch fine.
So, yeah, I just, I really don't understand what's to gain from the piggyback situation.
the six-man rotation when you're playing 12, 13 games and 13 days.
And, you know, early May, I get that.
Fine, whatever.
And there might be a stretch later on this year where you might go six-man for a couple
weeks because you play, you know, 13 games and 13 days again, like maybe.
But again, like I had assumed, and like you were saying earlier,
wouldn't it make the most sense here to just continue the six-man rotation until you get,
like the true six-man rotation until you get to that off day?
because Castillo would start
if they didn't do this piggyback thing
in the second game of the White Sox series
Castillo would start the final game of the White Sox series
and then Hancock would start the first game
of the Royal Series in Kansas City.
After a day off.
And then so like you could just do the six-manor rotation
one more time through.
You have that off day and then you have to make a decision
on who gets the start in the fifth day
after obviously Hancock starts, you know,
the first game after the off days.
I guess maybe they don't want Hancock to be
for a full week because he would start he's starting tonight and then he wouldn't start
again until next Friday but I don't know it's just it's just weird again to me the only thing
that makes sense here is if Castillo is just being eased into the bullpen roll this one time
but to me like you can only do it this one time and then the next time it just has to be
Bryce and then you make that just you make the decision to put Luis in the bullpen which is clearly
what they want to do, right? Like, that seems
clear as day that's what the mayor is ultimately
want to do here is move Luis to the bullpen.
Right. You know, until there's an opening
in the rotation,
which, depending on how long
that takes, may or may not be Louises anyways,
they might go to Katie Anderson at that point.
So anyways, yeah,
it just, I don't know, man.
They went into the Houston series
already a man down.
And then they went into the last two games of the
Houston series an extra man down because, you know, they activated Bryce on Wednesday. So Wednesday,
Thursday, they had an even shorter pen. And then yesterday they had to add Pereira back to the active
roster, even though he wasn't with the team. And so they were yet another man down. So the Mariners,
we've talked about this, the Mariners and how they use their their bench, like their 21 through 26 spots
are pathetic. It's stupid. It's Babacian, how they manage their 21 through 20.
six spots on their roster and they've done it for a couple of years now where they just don't
care about those roster spots and it's aggravating and it again it hasn't really come back to bite
them yet but they are asking for trouble and now they're going to carry this piggyback thing
for another week and be another man short in the bullpen.
I don't really understand the logic here, especially when you back it up with like, hey, we always
carry eight guys in the bullpen even though most teams only carry seven.
We always carry that extra guy and then we hardly ever use them.
so I just like it just feels all very like you're you're getting outside of what you want to do
specifically to cater to Luis to keep him as a part of the rotation for two extra weeks instead
of just putting him in the bullpen I just it just doesn't make any sense to me yeah again
to me the only thing that makes sense here is that this is essentially just like okay you're you're
going to get used to put into like the whole process of warming up in the bullpen coming in
later on in the game, all that, you know, starting up your clock a little bit later than
you're used to, all that.
And we're going to schedule that.
We're going to specifically schedule you doing all of that.
So it's not just random your first time coming out of the bullpen.
But still, to me, that can only, you can only do that once.
Yeah, but I mean, at some point, he's going to have to randomly be inserted into it.
You can't schedule a bullpen appearance.
Well, again, that's what I'm saying.
You can only do that once.
And then from that point forward,
it's go time. All right. Well, unfortunately, before yesterday's game, Cal Raleigh landed on the
IL with his oblique thing that he's been dealing with. We'll talk about him. We'll also talk about
Matt Brash and Victor Robles in just a moment. But first, a reminder of this episode of the

So the Mariners were obviously hanging on for as long as possible.
Cow Rale was trying to hang on for as long as possible.
with this oblique thing.
But Wednesday night, either he re-aggravated it
or just kind of finally succumbed to the discomfort.
Either way, he wasn't able to finish that game
and the writing was on the wall
and we all expected him to land on the IL
before yesterday's game.
And sure enough, that's the move of the Mariners finally made.
Probably a week too late, but whatever,
they finally made the decision now.
And hopefully they can get Cal right as soon as possible.
Johnny Parade is back up with the club.
After his cup of coffee with them last week, Mitch Garver obviously had a fantastic game in place of Cal yesterday.
Hit his first home run of the season.
And like I said on the show yesterday, you know, Garver's done some pretty nice things this year.
You know, despite the low batting average and the low sucking percentage, like he's actually hitting the ball hard a lot.
And he's taking his walks.
And he's actually been pretty good behind the plate as well, especially with the challenges.
and then, you know, Parada, obviously it's a small sample size,
but it's the only sample we have looked pretty good in his cup of coffee last week.
And we liked that addition as well when they brought him in during the off season.
So I like Pareta a little bit.
And, you know, look, you're never going to be in a good position
when you lose a player of Cal Raleigh's caliber.
But I feel like the Marys could be far worse off than they are right now.
So we'll see how it goes.
But, you know, I've been assuming that Mitch Garver will just be the everyday catcher here while Cal is down, Colby.
But do you think that's the case?
Or do you think this is more so going to be a timeshare behind the plate with him and Perada?
Yeah, I think it's going to be a little more of a split, certainly more than the Cal split of like 90-10, 95-5, whatever it was.
So, yeah, I think it's definitely more of a split.
but I think it's still probably like 60, 40 Garber.
Garber, he knows the pitching staff.
He's got the trust of those guys.
And he's actually been pretty solid at the plate this year.
It takes a lot of pitches.
He draws walks.
He's sitting in the ball very hard.
So while the overall numbers might not be there,
I think offensively he's actually looked just fine.
And has not been a black hole when he's been in the batters box.
So, yeah, obviously he's very good at the challenges too.
Parada, you know, he's got 50-some-odd games in the big leagues,
and he's produced pretty decently for a backup catcher.
He's sitting about 250 on-base percentage of 300.
Like, that's definitely good enough for a backup catcher.
And he throws the ball well.
Challenges have been a bit iffy for him in the major so far.
But, yeah, I mean, he's playable.
you're not running out
the
I mean he's better than like the Jacob
nodding hams
who you're just kind of like
trying to get something out of
so yeah I think in general
I feel okay about the Mariners
and the catching situation
and again this is all relative to
2026 Cal Raleigh
are you that much worse off
offensively with those two
than you are with the version of Cal Rale
we've seen for the first 40 games of this year
no you're just you're just not
I mean, you're going to lose some power, but batting average, no, on base, no, not really.
Strikeouts, not going to be that, you know, probably fewer strikeouts or being honest.
But you're really going to miss Cal defensively.
He's been very, very good defensively this year.
And obviously, you know, he's still, despite all the trouble he was going through,
he still had, what, seven home runs.
So you're going to lose some pop, sure, and you're going to lose some defense, a lot of defense.
But in terms of like on base and, you know, the offensive profile,
of 2026 Cal versus what we've seen from Garver and Parada so far.
I don't think it's going to be a huge drop off offensively.
Defensively, it is what it is.
Not a lot of teams have two, you know,
gold glove caliber catchers on their roster.
So you just kind of have to live with it and hopefully you get Cal back in a month or so.
But, you know, if it ends up being closer to the All-Star break,
I wouldn't be shocked either.
It's an oblique.
We just don't know.
We just, you never really know.
Now, obviously, Justin Hollander starts every homestand by speaking to the media.
given updates on injuries.
And we have a couple of guys that are on rehab assignments right now for the Mariners.
Matt Brash made his first rehab appearance last night in Tacoma.
Three strikeouts.
I think it was just 15 pitches that he needed to get through that.
It looked great.
Victor Robles has been rehabbing since May 3rd.
He's played in three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine games so far with Tacoma.
as he's working his way back from that that peck thing that's kind of the interesting one obviously you know the the mayor's bullpen is going to get a lot better here soon i don't think brash is going to be down in to coma for too long they're going to get ferrer back from the paternity list tonight and and i think we might see brash before the end of this padre series as well so you're going to get two big arms back into the fold there but to me robless is the interesting one because like how do you get him back into the mix here
what do you think is the corresponding move?
Yeah.
And I don't know when exactly they're going to make that move.
No, no.
Robles is I think eight or nine games into his rehab assignment.
You remember you get 20 games.
So they have another week and a half or so before they have to make a decision there.
But I am kind of thinking that I think what ultimately is going to happen is I think
Robles will get added back for Joe, and the mayors will continue to try and make it work with
Ref Snyder, even though it seems pretty obvious.
It's not going to work.
So I think, unfortunately, that's the path we're headed.
Now, I guess the good news, if you want to call it that, is that Joe does have a minor league
option left, and you can't refuse service or you can't refuse the assignment.
So you're not going to lose Joe, whereas if you make that move on, Ref Snyder, he's gone.
So I guess from that flexibility standpoint,
It makes some sense.
But, yeah, I think Robles probably comes up for Joe.
Robles can play all three outfield spots.
You know, it's worth noting that Julio DH'd yesterday,
after fouling a ball off his foot, doesn't seem that serious,
considering he played.
But, you know, if he needs a couple days off from center field
or if that foot thing's going to linger,
Mariners really don't have a good center field option, you know,
behind Julio.
And Robles can at least do that.
He also obviously runs the bases very well when he occasionally gets on.
So, yeah, I think Robles is a better bench player.
I don't love him in the role as a platoon partner because I frankly don't think he can hit really all that much.
I think 2024 is a mirage.
You guys know this by now.
But he's definitely a much better defender late and he's a better base runner and he's a better base dealer than a lot of guys on this mariner team.
So he can definitely add value.
I think it's going to come at the expense of Connor Joe, who's actually been a better Rob Reff Snyder than Rob Reff Snyder has been.
but again because Joe has the option and because he has to go back to AAA I guess I can
kind of understand why the Mariners would choose him over Ref Snyder because once they pull the
plug on ref Snyder it's done like there's there's no going back from that and yeah I get
they think there's a shot that he can he can get back to what he was last year I guess I just I
don't see that as a realistic possibility but what do I know well again when we got asked
about Rough Snyder on Monday
and I kind of made that that stance
on him.
I mentioned like, you know,
in some of these other situations when you had
Solano and you had Pollock
and you were kind of hanging on by a
thread with those guys.
You didn't really have
any other alternatives.
Well, you just mentioned
Connor Joe has been a better
Rob Rough Snyder than Robbrennter
has been. You also have
Brennan Davis down in
Tacoma who's crushing it and is eagerly waiting for his first opportunity to hit in the majors.
You have guys that you can actually turn to that are probably better options.
At the very least, like Connor Joe has proven that he's a better option right now.
Will that last for the entire season?
I don't know.
But that's the difference here, right?
With Pollock, with Solano, you really didn't have that at your disposal.
You have that now this time.
I don't know. They're probably not going to take advantage of that.
They're probably just going to continue to try and go down this road with ref center as long as they possibly can.
And like, you know, I do understand that.
But as a fan, as someone that's been doing this podcast, especially during the years of the, you know, of the Solanos and the Pollux, even though those guys are different players, don't get me wrong.
It's just I've seen this story play out.
seeing this very same story play out multiple times.
I kind of know, I kind of feel like I know where it's heading.
All right, well, the Padres are coming to town for three,
including a Sunday night baseball game.
That should be fun.
I'll go over that in just a moment.

So the Mariners are back home in Seattle, getting set to host the San Diego Padres for three games this weekend.
It wasn't long ago that we saw this club,
and we don't have to talk about what happened in that series.
The good news is the mayor is not going to have to face Nick Povetta or Michael King in this series.
Padre is a little beat up right now.
Obviously, you know, again, they're missing Povetta because he's he's on the IL with a strain flexor tendon.
Jake Cronerworth is out right now with concussion symptoms.
Luis Campuasono fractured his toe
So he's out memory he had one of the bigger hits in that that comeback
Tatease right now with with Croninworth out of action
Tatis is playing second base for the Padres
That's kind of interesting him coming back to the middle of the infield
Ramon Loriano's kind of cooled off
Remember he was annoying to face
In that last series but his batting average has dropped down to 214
is on base is sub 300 now.
He's just got a 94 WRC plus.
Meryl's only got an 80 WRC plus.
Tatis, you know, has like a 78 WRC plus, I think, on the season.
So, you know, some of the best players on this Padres Club are struggling.
And yet somehow they're 25 and 18.
They're still finding ways to win.
And a big reason for that is obviously that bullpen.
Right.
You just, you cannot afford to be down by any amount of runs.
one or 10
after the sixth inning,
really after the fifth inning.
Yeah,
you got to jump on these starters.
So again,
you're catching them at a better time
than the last time you caught them.
But yeah,
it's again,
the Mariners and the whole,
you know,
one step forward,
two step back.
It's really been the battle cry
of the entire season.
Yeah.
And at some point,
you know,
they got to start.
I mean,
I keep saying that the,
The American League is so ridiculously mid.
Like, I understand that.
But, like, yeah, at some point, you got to, you got to start stacking wins and stack
in series wins.
And you have to actually get over that 500 mark and continue to ascend instead of just kind
of playing putzy with 500 for a month straight.
Like, you do have to break through to the other side at some point.
Yeah, they've been good at building momentum, but not carrying momentum.
Right.
The best that they've been at that was the road trip in St. Louis and Minnesota,
where they swept the Cardinals and then they won two or three of Minnesota.
That's the best that's gotten though this year.
They really need to string together some serious wins here.
And there's a real opportunity here because you're not going to face King
because you're not going to face Pavetta to get yourself a series win here against club
where a lot of their best guys are either hurt or they're struggling right now.
So again, just find a way to get yourself in a lead.
So you're not having to face Jason Adam, Adrian Moray,
on Jeremy and Jeremiah Estrada,
Mason Miller at a deficit.
We can do that.
And especially if you can face those guys
while you have a lead and maybe,
you know,
keep those guys from being able to pitch
and, you know,
tomorrow or Sunday,
that that's great as well.
All right.
That is going to do it for our show.
