Starting point is 00:00:00 J.P. Crawford says he wants to be a Seattle Mariner for life, and he has even offered to make a significant change in order to try and do so. Let's talk about it. Colby, hit it. You are Locked-on Mariners, your daily Seattle Mariners podcast. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Ahoy, Sailors, it is Thursday, May 21st, 2026. My name is Taddy Gazzal. And I'm joined as always by my co-cove Colby Patnode on today's show, as promised. We'll talk about that disastrous showing from the Mariners on Tuesday night.
Starting point is 00:00:41 No, we are not going to let them off the hook for that. We'll also get you set for the mayor's upcoming series with the Royals because it's going to be our last show of the week. We'll be back on Monday after the KC series. But let's start here with J.P. Crawford, Colby. Yesterday, it was kind of crazy before the game. He gets scratched from the lineup with a sore triceps after being hit by two pitches in that general area. But as that news dropped, it was also being reported that he was taking rounders over at third base. Now he wasn't throwing because of the triceps injury, of course,
Starting point is 00:01:08 but he was taking grounders, which is pretty dang interesting. And after the game, both JP and Justin Hollander revealed that this was something that JP actually came to the team with and not the other way around after talking to his agent. JP stated, quote, I want to be a mariner for life. And I think that's the best way to do it. And quote, furthermore on Colt Emerson, JP had this to say, quote, I just want to be there for him. We're on the same team.
Starting point is 00:01:35 we all have the same goal, and that's to win a world series. And the sooner you could get comfy here, the better, end quote. Now, Colby, before we dive more into this and talk about whether or not JP can actually extend his career in Seattle, let me just say, I think this is awesome from JP Crawford and also totally not a surprise. You know, as Ryan Davis said on Twitter yesterday, JP was ready to quit baseball before he was traded from Philadelphia to Seattle. and then guys like Kyle Seeger and D. Strange Gordon took him under their wing and helped him, you know, find his love for the game again. He has a great deal of love and respect and loyalty and history with this Mariners organization. So that was really cool to hear from him that he is willing to do this and make this change, specifically in a contract year.
Starting point is 00:02:28 But overall, let's talk about the practicality of it. what do you think about this potential move to third for JP? I think I have some doubts that it would work the way that it's intended. Defensively, can he handle the position? I mean, probably not in a way that you're going to be super excited about. The problems at shortstop still exist, even if you move them to third base, but you might be able to tamp them down a little bit. The biggest one being the accuracy of the throat.
Starting point is 00:03:02 It was like third base, you don't have to have a rocket for an arm, you know, unless you're deep in the hole behind the bag. And at that point, not many guys are making that throw anyways, but you have to be accurate. And you have to get rid of the ball quickly when you're at third base. And, you know, JP, if there's one thing you would not describe his arm as, it's accurate. Like the ball sails on him. He dips low and he kind of slings it across his body and ball has a tendency to sail on him. So I do have questions about the accuracy of his throws. And, you know, obviously he's really bad to the backhand side.
Starting point is 00:03:37 He has no range there. Now, at third base, you could play him a little closer to the line. And then the range isn't as much of a problem. But then you're leaving the five, six hole open because you're having to move your third basement closer to the line to cover that. And you're probably going to do that because balls that get down the line are doubles. Whereas, you know, when you're playing shortstop, if you have a bad backhand, those are still singles. you know so it's not you'd rather give up a single than double uh but i i do think that he does some things well he does have good hands uh very good at the short hop uh you know quick hands getting down and
Starting point is 00:04:11 and handling those those you know in between hops as well he's pretty good at those and you get a lot of those at third base um he's very good at charging the baseball still uh slow rollers i don't think you're going to be a problem for him once he figures out the angle of the throw and all that uh so yeah and then obviously he's still okay to his glove side. Not great, but he's still okay. But I think at the end of the day, I don't know if it's going to work all that well.
Starting point is 00:04:37 I don't think JP's going to become even an average third baseman. He's probably still going to be a little bit below average. But I think the net of below average third base defense with above average shortstop defense by having Emerson play shortstop every day, I think that's better than having, you know, above average third base defense and below average shortstop defense. So third base is still a pretty important position defensively.
Starting point is 00:05:03 I mean, I know it's not up the middle, but after the up the middle positions, it's probably the most important position on the field just because it's, you know, everybody's trying to pull the ball and everybody's sitting the ball hard. And so, like, yeah, it's going to take him a while. I don't think this is something that if it does work its way into games, I don't think it's going to be in the next, you know, day or two. I don't think you're going to see JP play third base tomorrow. So us to get used to the angles and the throw.
Starting point is 00:05:29 And, you know, does he have to change his throwing motion a little bit at third? Maybe, maybe not. I don't know. But still probably going to be a couple weeks before we start to see this, or at least a week or so. But, yeah, the fact that he's willing to do it, I think is obviously awesome. And it speaks to the kind of, you know, culture that the Mariners have, that Scott Service spent almost a decade putting in place and that Dan Wilson's
Starting point is 00:05:55 trying to keep going and the self-sacrifice and all that is awesome and jp's obviously a stand-up dude so all that's very cool again i i don't think it's going to be like incredible but i do think it's a net upgrade if jp can manage a third base and colt emerson play shortstop uh and i think it's really cool that you know he's willing to to make that sacrifice and and make that trade off and again we'll see if it works it's going to be a couple weeks i would think before they're comfortable trying this game. But I do have some reservations about it, but overall I think it is
Starting point is 00:06:29 the best possible solution that you have based on who you have on your current roster. To me, the question is less about what can you get out of JP as a third basement and more about does this make you overall a better defensive unit? And I think the answer to that question is ultimately yes. How much
Starting point is 00:06:47 so, I'm not really sure. We'll just kind of have to see. But I do think overall it does make you a better defensive team. Now, my question is once Brennan Donovan gets back into the fold here in a few weeks time, presumably, if the conversation shifts from Brennan Donovan versus Colt Emerson at third base to J.P. Crawford versus Brennan Donovan at third base, then what? Yeah. I mean, the Mariners have already stated that when Donovan comes back, he's going to be more of the super utility role. Like he's going to play some second, he's going to play some third. he'll play in the corners
Starting point is 00:07:23 and he'll probably get a healthy amount of DH days as well because the bat is really important you want the bat and so that means he has to DH twice a week and he needs to get one day off a week every week for the rest of the season just to try and manage the core issues then it's well worth it
Starting point is 00:07:39 because Donovan is that type of hitter particularly against right hand of pitching. So yeah I think it could mean more days off for JP it could be more days off for for Donovan it could mean some days off for Cole Young and Colt Emerson. And none of those are bad things. You know, like guys need days.
Starting point is 00:07:55 Julio's played every single game this season. Like, you need a center fielder. You need a guy who could play multiple positions as well. And the mayors are going to get both of those guys back in the near future. And so giving guys who have played a lot, rest is really good. And there's no such thing as having too many good bats, too many good infielders. Like, you find a way to get these guys playing time. And the versatility of Donovan being able to play second and third as well as,
Starting point is 00:08:20 the outfield and then obviously, you know, JP can play shortstop in third and Colt Emerson can do the same. And even Cole Young can play shortstop in a pinch if you really need them too. So lots of versatility. And it just means that somebody's going to get an extra day off a weekend again, considering, you know, JP and where he's at in his career, the number of ending C's log, considering Donovan's injury history and considering how much Randy and Julio have had to play so far this year.
Starting point is 00:08:46 Like, it's not the worst thing in the world. You can find a way to make it work. It'll just be a little bit trickier, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Now, the other question that this brings up, again, is about JP's long-term future. He has now stated to the media, he wants to be a mariner for life, and that this decision that he's making, this change that he's willing to make is that's an effort to make that happen to stay in Seattle long-term. I'm curious if the conversation of an extension has been broached by JP or the team to the other or maybe by JP's agent to the team because again this all started with a conversation that JP had with his agent so maybe he's had some conversations with the team and they told him
Starting point is 00:09:37 hey this is what JP needs to do in order for us to actually be interested in keeping Seattle and keeping him here in Seattle. So realistically, how much do you think this could help him accomplish that? I mean, we'll see how that transition goes, but in theory, there is an opening at third base next year, assuming Randy a Rosarena leaves, which I think we all assume will be the case. Then Donovan is your left fielder,
Starting point is 00:10:05 and that leaves third base open with Emerson. So it certainly helps that that likelihood. Again, the question is, what is the market going to look like for JP? Is he going to be able to market himself as a utility infielder, a bat first utility infielder? You could place second, short, third, and DH a little bit and be a high on base, you know, kind of pest like that.
Starting point is 00:10:28 That is probably going to net you a pretty decent contract. So, yeah, it'll be interesting to see. I think it helps. I think the likelihood goes up. And again, the versatility of Donovan kind of allows that to be the case. There's really nobody on the farm right now that's going to be knocking down the door to be the third baseman for at least another couple of years. Maybe Felman eventually, but it's at least a couple of years away. And I don't think JP is looking at a five-year extension here.
Starting point is 00:10:57 I think he's probably looking at, I mean, what were you going to offer Jorge Polanco? I mean, that's probably about what I would pay J.P. Crawford. They're doing it a little bit differently in terms of their offensive profile, but roughly they're three-win players. you know and so yeah i think whatever you're willing to offer polanco is probably what i would i would be comfortable uh which i think was i don't know 16 million bucks a year give or take uh we'll see if jp wants to take if he's willing to take a little less to uh to stay here since he loves it so much but i do think the likelihood goes up i don't think it's it's i wouldn't say it's even 50 50 i think the odds that jp's back next year probably
Starting point is 00:11:35 up to like 20 to 30 percent now as opposed to like 10 percent uh so I think it helps. I still think it's a little bit unlikely, but again, if JP really wants to be here and the Mariners, they really like JP, obviously, and they like the clubhouse stuff and the leadership and all that. So certainly a possibility. It helps the fact that he's willing to do it and he's already willing to do it. I don't know, again, I don't know if this is JP like, hey, I want to be in Seattle and this is the way it's going to happen or if it's JP being like, look, I know the writing's on the wall. I can't go out there and market myself as a shortstop only next year because nobody's going to treat me like a shortstop only and I'm going to end up with minimal offers. But also, you know, one thing to keep in mind is with the lockout coming, J.P. Crawford could be one of those guys who, you know, doesn't sign quickly. And then the lockout comes.
Starting point is 00:12:29 And then he's kind of in limbo for a couple months. And then it's like, do I have to take a one year like five, six million dollar deal, even though I'm JP Crawford? Like if I moved to third now, can I parlay this into an extension and get some guaranteed money and you know stay in a place that I really like without having to do this whole I'm a free agent for the first time in the middle of a lockout type of thing so there and again this was a guy and again this was a guy that and the only other place that he's been in and professional baseball he essentially fell out of love with the game so change could
Starting point is 00:13:03 be scary for him yep so we'll see how this plays out I do wonder if from the mariner side it's not just a move to third base that would be necessary. It would also be maybe during the offseason learning how to play a corner outfield spot, maybe more of a willingness to DH, you know, all that. So we'll see. Sure. You know, second base seemed like a possibility before the season. But Cole Young, for all of his struggles offensively, for his ups and downs offensively, I think the Mariners feel pretty good about Cole Young is their future second base. But So it's third base, maybe left field or bust for JP. And so, again, we'll see how it goes.
Starting point is 00:13:47 But I think if you're looking at J.P., if JPM is looking at this, three years, 40 million, two years, 35 million, something like that, I think is probably like the, where I'm at right now for JAP is just the hitter because I don't know what he is as a defender. I know he's not a very good shortstop. Could it be a decent third baseman? Maybe. And I guess we'll see.
Starting point is 00:14:09 So I don't think we'll see an extension. anytime soon. But once we see him at third base, if he looks comfortable, if the team's rolling well and all that, then maybe they have a serious conversation about it between the agent and the front office. All right. Well, switching gears here, like I said in my short, after Tuesday night's loss to the White Sox, that was one of the worst, most mind-numbing Mariners games I've ever watched in my entire life watching Mariners baseball, which might seem like an over-exaggeration over a random Tuesday night game. but if you know the context heading into it and if you actually watch that game play out,

Starting point is 00:17:41 Tuesday night. Marries lose two to one to the Chicago. White Sox. I've slept twice, not great, but I've slept twice since that game ended. And I do feel better than I did after that game. But you guys did see my raw reaction that I did have to, you know, hold back a little bit because of the, you know, because it was on this channel. Colby didn't have to hold back at all on his postgame reaction on the Patreon. If you want to hear that, patreon.com forward slash control the zone. But yeah, you know, the mayor has won yesterday.
Starting point is 00:18:18 So that made me feel a little bit better about the whole thing. But I'm still baffled by what we saw during that game. Like, we have to talk about it. I'm sorry. I know that they won the series and I know that they won yesterday and we should just kind of move on. But no, I refuse. I refuse.
Starting point is 00:18:34 It was, it was awful. And look, I get it. Yeah, the offense scored one run on one hit. They were pathetic on Tuesday night against a pitch. and Anthony Kay, who entered that game with a FIP of 5-5. So yes, a lot of that game does fall on the shoulders of the Marys offense. Don't get me wrong. That said, they had the lead with three outs to get.
Starting point is 00:19:03 And they ultimately chose their plan and keeping Luis Castillo stretch out over putting themselves in the best position to win the ball game. and the process of that to me is terribly concerning because look, there are going to be some games where your offense only scores one or two, but you're still going to have a chance to win. And you should do everything you can
Starting point is 00:19:32 within your power to win that game. You had your closer available at Andres Moeus. And you didn't get him warm until after Luis Cascio had already come back out for the ninth inning. So yeah, the offense was a problem. but that is my biggest problem with that whole situation. That was one of the, and that's not to even mention all the,
Starting point is 00:19:57 uh, the contradicting non-pinch hitting decisions that happen. That's not to even mention Dan Wilson, not knowing the rules of mound visits and all that. It's not to even mention all that. That was one of the worst managed games I've, I've ever seen in my life. Mariners or otherwise, frankly.
Starting point is 00:20:17 And I get, I sound like I'm, I probably sound like I'm exaggerating over a random Tuesday night game. But again, if you know the context going into that game and you saw everything that played out in the way that it did, I think you can understand where I'm coming from. Yeah, it was a soul-sucking embarrassment that should have embarrassed every single person who's ever been associated with the Seattle Mariners. Yeah. that's as bad as it gets folks. Like it doesn't get any stupider than what we just watched on Tuesday night.
Starting point is 00:21:01 And by the way, not for nothing. It does sound like there was some disgruntlement coming from the clubhouse as well as we've seen from an article from Kramer today. And also, I believe, one from Jude. There's some people in the Mariners Clubhouse who aren't too thrilled with the way things have been managed. and I think we know who it is. It's Luke and Dom not getting Kiev bats in the fifth inning. It's, you know, Bryce Miller being taken out of the game.
Starting point is 00:21:31 It's Munoz not being given a save opportunity in a one-nothing ball game against the middle of the opponent's order. Yeah. So it feels like they're just trying to kind of, you know, dread this needle that doesn't need to be dreaded. like it's just overly complicating what is really a simple matter. Again, it's very simple. You have a one run lead heading into the ninth inning against the two, three, four of the opponent.
Starting point is 00:22:04 Is your closer available? Yes. Use him right there. Start the inning with your closer. This is not rocket science. Now, some of this is a little tough because, like, was it a directive of the front office? get three out of Luis maybe it's a 50 pitches out of both right out of both brison and louis yeah right maybe but again we talk about this a lot like there's one thing that dan wilson is tragically
Starting point is 00:22:30 awful at one of the things he's tragically awful at is improvising like he gets handed a game plan hey this is what we want to do and he sticks to that because he can't look at the game see what's happening in front of him and be like okay now i have to pivot here because this isn't going exactly how we plan. Jerry Depoto said so in the booth himself. Like, hey, what's the, what's the game plan for tonight? Get a big lead. And that way, we don't have to use anybody else in the bullpen.
Starting point is 00:22:56 Well, Jerry, A, your offense sucks. So that's not going to happen. But also, be, look at the game in front of you. What part of that game made you think that your offense was close to scoring additional runs? But third, you didn't get the comfortable lead that he said that would have been ideal for that situation. Yeah, he said, get a comfortable lead. And then, you know, we use two pitchers, Bryce. and Luis, you know, get the job done, right?
Starting point is 00:23:19 Which, to be fair, they almost did, you know, with a little bit of help there from Jose Ferrer in the middle. You know, so I do want to commend Luis and Bryce for what they were able to do over the course of the majority of that game, especially Bryce. Bryce was fantastic. But still, the situation didn't line up with what, you know, this ideal. outcome was in the heads of the Mariners. They had to adapt to the situation that was at hand. You were three outs away from being able to win that ball game. You're going up against the heart of the White Sox order.
Starting point is 00:23:59 Yeah, Luis looked pretty good coming out of the bullpen. You know, he got shaky there in the eighth inning, but he was able to work out of it. But you have your closer available. You have a chance to win the game. It's simple. The answer is simple there. You go to Andres Munoz. at the very least you don't start getting him warm
Starting point is 00:24:20 once the bottom of the eighth ends you start getting him warm during the bottom of the eighth like the entire handling of the whole situation was baffling to me and again you got Dan who doesn't even know the mountain visit rules and all that's trying to go out there and get Luis
Starting point is 00:24:48 and thank God Luis was able to strike out what was it, Colson Montgomery, I think. You know, but like that there's a term that I want to use. I can't use it here on the show, but yeah, the mayor is essentially you know what, down their leg on live television.
Starting point is 00:25:13 Yeah, it wasn't great to say the least. Again, thankfully they were able to win yesterday, so that kind of eases some of the pain a bit, but you could have had a sweep. And, you know, as we know, the Mariners are kind of struggling to gain momentum right now. So these little wins that you should have, but don't get, they sting quite a bit. And again, what you're kind of running into right now is this problem that,
Starting point is 00:25:40 it's just this problem that you're not using your guys correctly, right? You're trying to outsmart the room. You're trying to prove you're the smartest boys in school. And it's like, look, just win the guys. game that's right in front of you. Yeah. And there are times where it's like, look, you're going to make the right move and it's not going to work out. And it's like, oh, bummer. I mean, that happens, right? Like baseball stinks sometimes. But, and you live with that. But when you don't make the right
Starting point is 00:26:11 move and it's because you're trying to outsmart the entire room and the entire league, instead of just doing the obvious, it, you're going to get criticized for it. And you should. Like, again, is Andres Munoz available? Yes. Are you holding on to a one-nothing lead heading into the bottom of the ninth? Yes. Hmm. What should we do?
Starting point is 00:26:35 The answer is easy. Put Munoz in the game to start the inning. And you know what? If Luis only threw 38 pitches and he was supposed to throw 50, who cares, have Luis go out to the bullpen at the end of the game and throw 15 pitches. Like, you have to manage the game in front of you. And by the way, if you were concerned that this was a problem, take Bryce Miller out after five to guarantee that if we go to the ninth inning,
Starting point is 00:26:58 Munoz can start that inning because Luis will have hit his arbitrary pitch count number. Or stop being babies and just say, Luis, you're in the bullpen. Go. Like, you have to stop coddling these guys. And again,
Starting point is 00:27:11 there's disgruntlement in the clubhouse. We are hearing it now from multiple people over the last 24 to 48 hours. And it's not hard to figure out who this is. you know like dom can zone probably really frustrated that he never gets to hit lefties despite the fact he hit lefties last year look really probably doesn't like getting taken out of the game in the fifth inning for no reason you just lost a game because you didn't go to your closer with a one nothing lead uh you know and and so obviously bryce isn't too thrilled to know that his starts are cut short just you know on principle basically of not hurting louise's feelings too
Starting point is 00:27:49 much. Bryce was throwing a no hitter. He gave up one hit and Dan was like, all right, that's it. Right. Now, again, I'll say this, like going to Ferrer to face for Kami. Yeah. Sure. You know, with the time run on second. That looked like a mover. I was like, look, I know my offense isn't going to score a run. Like, I know I have to try and win this game one nothing. Fine. But then you have to continue to play the game like that until you get a new result. Right. Right. And yeah, I, I like, I actually, I'm fine with that decision. I totally understand the process of that decision. But from Bryce's viewpoint, I'm just saying from Bryce's viewpoint, I can totally understand why he was very visibly upset with that and was trying to stay in the game. Like, yeah, I'd be pissed too if I'm throwing a no-hitter and I give up one hit.
Starting point is 00:28:37 And my manager is like, all right, that's it. You're done. Like, what? Yeah. And again, like, if the offense wasn't complete trash against a horrible pitcher, then we're probably not having this conversation. We're like, oh, you know, a little hiccup there, whatever. They'll straighten it out.
Starting point is 00:28:55 Luis looked really good in the bullpen, at least his first inning, looked okay in the second inning, actually, too. Bryce looks great. He's getting whiffs on the fastball. Like, oh, man, the Maris has scored four runs against Anthony freaking K, who shut them out twice in the span of a week. If they'd scored four runs, we'd be like, yeah, you know, a little hiccup here and there.
Starting point is 00:29:14 That was pretty stupid, but hopefully they'll learn from it. But no, you have to manage the game that's in front of you. Just like you have to manage the roster that you have in front of you, not the one you built in your head three months ago. Like, except that Rob Refsnider is not it. Except that Connor Joe does not give you a better opportunity against left-handed pitching than Dom can's own. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:36 Right. Understand these things. Look at it and say, hey, this is the reality in front of me. And this is the ball game we're playing today. This is how I have to go about winning this game. and either games in April and may matter, as we've been told, or they don't, as the actions of Tuesday night kind of made it look like, yeah, we're okay losing this game if it means that we get, you know, the process that we want, regardless of the result.
Starting point is 00:30:00 Yeah, that game was we are choosing to keep these guys stretched out over giving ourselves the best possible chance to win the game. Specifically, Luis, a guy who, and I love Luis Castillo, I do. I'll do respect to the guy. But you did it for the sake of keeping a guy who has a 6-4-1 ERA stretched out as a starter. Like, we're not talking about Prime Louise Castillo here.
Starting point is 00:30:28 We're talking about the 2026 edition of Luis Castillo. No, like, I know we need to move on, but like... And I get where they're coming from because, like, you know, pitcher injuries and all that. You're probably going to need Louise to make some starts for you at some point down the line. Whatever. I get it.
Starting point is 00:30:45 I understand where they're coming from, but that was not the time nor the place to push the envelope there. And there were other options at their disposal to still be able to get Castillo the work that he needed. At the end of the day, like let's say, oh, Luis,
Starting point is 00:31:02 we want to keep him at 50 pitches. So that way if he does have to stretch back out or whatever, he only needs a start or two to get back to 80. It's like, and what is the big difference between him going 50 pitches or 41 pitches? when the outcome is when the outcome is still in the balance there is no difference none so again it's just it's just using common sense using your brain and being how many pitches did he throw in the knife i don't know no 20 there's a lot he walked a guy and uh or he hit a guy i should say you gave up a hit i think that was in the deep count so yeah yeah it just it doesn't make sense like it just what is the what is the what is the difference between him throwing 37 pitches and 45 or whatever the magic cutoff line is, there isn't any. There really isn't any in the grand scheme of things. And if it takes
Starting point is 00:31:55 Luis one extra start where you have to piggyback, you know, Cooper Chriswell because Logan Gilbert's on the IL or whatever the situation is, right? If it takes him two starts to get back up to 50 or to get back up to 85, 90 pitches instead of one, who cares? It's worth it to win this one game. So, yeah, the whole thing was just a disaster. And again, it's an abject failure across the board from everybody except for Bryce, Luis, Munoz, and Ferrer. Because they all threw the ball pretty well. The offense sucked. Dan was dreadful.
Starting point is 00:32:32 His staff was dreadful. The front office who put this plan together, total organizational failure on Tuesday night. All right. Well, the Mariners are off today, but they're heading out to Kansas City for a three-game set over the week. weekend. So the mayor is off today, but heading to Kaufman Stadium for three against the Royals over the course of this upcoming weekend. You know how I feel about the Mariners going to Kaufman Stadium, even though that they've actually won quite a few ball games down there as of late, but also some of the worst losses that have really stuck in my mind,
Starting point is 00:35:33 worse of regular season losses for the Mariners that have really stuck in my mind have mostly happened at that stadium as well. Tim Mandela affects himself like every time they go to coffee. be like, oh, remember they got swept last year? It's like actually they won two out of three. Oh, I mean, they did, they did lose a game on an opposite field, Adam Fraser, home run. Against Matt Brash, hooked right around the foul pole.
Starting point is 00:35:58 Against Matt Brash, like some weird stuff happens. Yeah, some weird stuff happens with this ballpark. Yes, Bryce Miller blew like a 7-0 lead. Yes, yes, yes, yes. If you look at their record over like the last five years, they're like, you know. At the very least, the series isn't happening. September. It's happening in May. So we're getting this out of the way early.
Starting point is 00:36:19 So that's nice. The Barons are going to miss Chris Bubich and Cole Regans who are both on the IL. But still going to run into a couple of really good starters in Noah Cameron in tomorrow's game. And then on Sunday, Seth Lugo and, you know, Stephen Kulloch,
Starting point is 00:36:38 former Mariners farmhand, is going to pitch the second game of the series. They had some issues against him. last year they still won that game but i remember he i think they only got one or two runs off of him through like six or seven let's be clear right it doesn't matter who you're thrown against the marriage is a very good chance that they're going to pitch very well especially if they're left handed yeah at the very least you only see one left-hander instead of the other two left-handers really good left-handers that the royals have so yeah we know the royals are
Starting point is 00:37:12 kind of the opposite of the Mariners and that they're athletic and they make a lot of contact and their best pitchers are left-handed. And so their ballpark is not conducive to the type of defense the Mariners play. So we know that this is on paper always a tough series. So look, I don't want to sit here and be like, oh, they missed Reagan's and Bovich. Like, yeah, we're going to win this series because I think we know by now the Mariners, no, like just no. I mean, maybe they went five out of six on this homestead or on this road trip. They've done it before. But then they'll probably lose four or six on the next homestand because that's just who this Mariners team is. We're a third of the way through the season.
Starting point is 00:37:52 This is who they are until proven otherwise. That being said, you do dodge a bit of a, you know, a left-handed bullet there without having to face Reagan's and boo, but you do have to face Cameron, though. But, you know, again, Lugo and Kolek, not pushovers, very good pitchers. And again, the ballpark is not very well suited to the Mariners. It's a big outfield. There's, you know, lots of triples can be hit here. And the Mariners don't have blazing speed on their roster or anything like that. And so, yeah, but the Royals are not playing good baseball at the moment.
Starting point is 00:38:28 And you are, no, you're not either, but you're coming off of a serious win, I guess. And you are throwing, you do on paper have the advantage in the pitching. this weekend. Like that's ever mattered. But you are coming off the off day just like they are. So the bullpen should be in pretty good shape. You'd love to not have to use Ferrear tomorrow. Give him two full days off.
Starting point is 00:38:52 But you know, with Pasquintino lurking and Caglione lurking on this lineup, he's going to have to get some big outs for you. But hey, Brash is back. That helps a lot. Munoz should be good to go two days off. Brash should be good to go for at least two of these games. I don't think you'll see him back to back.
Starting point is 00:39:10 for a while. So yeah, the Mariners are in pretty decent shape as things go, heading into Kansas City. It caught him at a good time in terms of the injury front. But again, does any of this actually matter? Because it hasn't for the first 50 games of the year. So we'll see if the Mariners play well, they're probably going to take two out of three. If they don't, they're probably getting swept because there is no just losing two out of three with this Mariner team. No. Either we win the series or we get swept. Yeah, yeah. It's, yeah, there's definitely a bit of formula to the season so far for the Mariners.
Starting point is 00:39:49 We'll see what game, Salvador Perez, hits his annoying home run in. God, yeah. We'll see which game Bobby Witt Jr. takes over. In theory, it'd probably be best if that happened in the same game. And you can just chalk up that one L and be like, yeah, well, we'll win the next two. But yeah, yeah, again, Kansas City, better than their record shows, I think, at least. and I do think though that this is a really good time to play them but just a really tough matchup on paper for the Mariners
Starting point is 00:40:18 yeah so Gabe Spire made his first rehab appearance last night it did not go well give up a couple homers three runs in total three hits did have a couple strikeouts but yeah not a great first rehab appearance for Spire and that was at the high A level by the way that was not in Tacoma
Starting point is 00:40:40 that was with with effort so really good 21 year olds down there in the high a level yeah I didn't see it but just by looking at like the the you know the the game log and all that seemed like it was really only interested in throwing strikes and he didn't care where they went yeah if he put a pitch down the middle of the plate he's like oh cool that's a strike oh yeah it went 400 feet whatever it was a strike like that's all I can about. I'm sure the Aqua Sox appreciate that when they miss the playoffs by one game. But no, seriously, yeah, Gabe, velocity seemed good. He was throwing strikes. He's obviously going to need another one anyway. It's probably two more. But yeah, it's good. Hopefully,
Starting point is 00:41:30 no setbacks because Gabe is still an important piece of this. But now with Ferrer taking over, like the big, you know, left-handed heavy duties here, the daddy, the daddy daycare duties, I guess we'd call it. It does, yeah, it does pre-up Gabe to maybe take like the sixth inning lefty block instead of the sub-daddy duties. Sure, the stepdaddy duties. Yeah, but yeah, you let daddy clean up the mess and, you know, stepdaddy can be there to give the juice boxes and the sixth and all that, but in all seriousness, Gabe, when he's
Starting point is 00:42:04 good is very, very good. So it would be a big help to not have to use Herrera every single game. Because you'd be like, oh, they still won't. It hasn't stopped him before. I at one point with Gabe Spire active, Herrera pitched in half the games this season. And he might be back on that pace again, even after he got four days off in a row, you know,
Starting point is 00:42:26 to be with his wife and his new daughter. So, yeah, it's, I mean, literally, it became a daddy. It's been a big week for Ferrer. Two Daddy's promotions. Nice. Went from dog to Daddy, and he went from, you know, partner to Daddy. Like, yeah, good job, Jose. But, yeah, Gabe, hopefully he looks a little better in his next rehab out of him.
Starting point is 00:42:53 But he was throwing strikes. He was, the stuff was okay. So we'll see how he feels today. And then obviously, I imagine we probably see him at the start of the next homestand, would be my guess. if only the people listening on on podcast platforms can see my face the daddy the daddy bit is something it's something else shout out to claire shout out to claire who on blue sky let me know that her husband walked in on you talking about daddies and had no idea what was going on
Starting point is 00:43:29 i mean who doesn't want a daddy victor also i'm going to say uh yeah victor I thought the plan was to activate him on this road trip. So we might see him tomorrow. Yes. Or we might not. Again, the Mariners, they've extended his rehab assignment or whatever once, which apparently you could just do.
Starting point is 00:43:58 But he has played pretty frequently. I think he's been hitting the ball a little bit better. You got off to a really slow start, as you might expect. But yeah, obviously Robles, even if he's not going to provide much offense, which again, 2024 is a mirage. That was fake daddy, Victor Robles.
Starting point is 00:44:15 Now he's just kind of a dude, you know, but even that version of him is still helpful because he runs the bases really well. He can play the outfield. Not that the mayor is believe in late game. Yeah, not that the mayors believe in late game
Starting point is 00:44:27 defensive replacements, but they should, and they should use Victor in that role. And we'll see how many Fats he gets against left-handed pitching. Probably not going to be any worse than Rob Reff Snyder has been, and he actually has, you know,
Starting point is 00:44:40 defense and base running skills. So he will help the bench. I imagine that'll come at the expense of Connor Joe. Yeah, yeah, because I would love to be proven wrong, but I doubt the corresponding move will be Robbrenner. One name to keep an eye on for this road trip. Brock Rodden continues to hit.
Starting point is 00:45:05 And you do wonder how long Patrick Wisdom, is here. Now, wisdom's actually looked okay. I mean, you know, obviously had the big RBI double yesterday, but five hard hit balls in the last two games. And I imagine he's probably in the lineup tomorrow against the lefty as well.
Starting point is 00:45:25 But you do wonder at some point, you know, Rodden is like, hey, this is just too good. And we need the versatility. We want the speed more than we want the one and 50 chance that, you know,
Starting point is 00:45:35 wisdom gets a pitch that he can drive and he doesn't miss it. But again, Patrick Wisdom, helped out this weekend, or this week. So, uh, no, no shade on him. But yeah, just keep an eye on Rodden, but I, I do suspect we'll see Robles added for Connor Joe. Then maybe Rodden for wisdom. And then probably not, but I guess cross your fingers and hope. Brennan Davis, Rob Reff Snyder. But, uh, I think Robles for sure. I think Gabe will be in the home stand. And then we'll see if there's any other moves after that. All right. Well, that is going to do it for
