Starting point is 00:00:00 The Mariners made me very upset last night. They made me very upset during this game. But in the end, they get themselves a serious victory over the White Sox. Let's talk about it. Colby, hit it. You are Locked-on Mariners. Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Ahoy, sailors. It is Wednesday, May 20th, 20, 26. My name is Tadding Azalas, and I'm joined as always by my co-coast, Colby Patnode. Marys beat the White Sox 5 to 4 and win the series this afternoon. Now, today's episode, it's going to be a shorter one. And we're primarily just going to recap what happened today. But make no mistake, we're not letting them off the hook for that disaster that happened last night. We are going to talk about that on tomorrow's episode.
Starting point is 00:00:55 They slept, right? Yeah, nothing happened last night. Totally normal series win. I don't even think they played last night, actually. Yeah. If you guys want my unvarnished thoughts on what occurred last night and you want to see what I'm like without the guardrails of locked on, maybe you should subscribe to our Patreon tier three in particular for the two random post game shows I do a week because I did not hold back last night. I almost broke the guardrails of locked on on my short that I posted last night. Yeah, I saw a couple times where I was like, oh, that looks like a cut right there.
Starting point is 00:01:31 like no yeah it wasn't great but thankfully they did bounce back and and find a way to win a series should have been asleep but uh you know they found a way to win a series so it helps a little bit but we're certainly not going to ignore what happened it's just lucky for them it happened the day before we record a post game show because probably also lucky for us if we're being honest because we'll have like two full sleeps on it before we actually have to dive in to discuss it but uh either way stupid winning does heal all it today didn't necessarily heal last night though but it it did make me feel better today's game did make me feel a little bit better i do feel a little less riled up today
Starting point is 00:02:18 but uh but yeah well again we'll we'll talk about that tomorrow because apparently they're going to deploy the piggyback again on the road we'll get in we'll get into that on tomorrow's episode for now for now the mariner's win the series and uh i think you know i mean there's a lot of places that we could start here colby i know you want to start with hosea ferre but i tend to like to save the the daddy hose daddy for one more time no that's the long time you're getting that out of me yeah god don't do that i tend to like to uh to save the pitching stuff for for towards the end of the episode for for these post game episodes though.
Starting point is 00:03:01 So I actually want to start with the revelation that's been Johnny Paradea. He gets his first career homer this afternoon off of Sean Newcomb. Our buddy Jordan Schusterman, who joined us on the show yesterday, of course, had this note on Twitter earlier today. Sean Newcomb was the active leader in Major League Baseball for most batters faced, 119, without allowing a home run this season until Johnny Parada happened. he's had some big moments, you know, so far since getting called back up or, well, just between his two call-ups, really,
Starting point is 00:03:36 especially in this series, both offensively and behind the plate. He's really stepped up. He's been a lot of fun to watch. Ty, you and I both looked at his Savant page and kind of looked through his minor league numbers and we both came to the conclusion, like, this guy's probably a viable major league, you know, backup catcher. Like, he hits the ball hard. It's a pretty decent defender.
Starting point is 00:03:57 not amazing at framing, but very strong arm. He, again, high exit veloes, doesn't strike out a ton in the miners, got some pop. Yeah, he's going to hit like 250 with like a 300 on base, but that's a backup catcher. I mean, that that's actually a really good offensive profile for a backup catcher, and you get some defensive value out of it. And he had an option, kind of sneakily one of Jerry's best moves this winter. And today, you know, it pays off because obviously with cow on the shelf, You've had to use Prater Moore.
Starting point is 00:04:27 And he's not intimidated by Major League pitching, that's for sure. He's going up there and he's hacking. And he took a big hack and it ended up being the, well, could have been the difference of the game. Unfortunately, Bizarro had a little bit of a hiccup there. But what are you going to do either way? They followed up with another big home run. So, yeah, Parada, very good day to day.
Starting point is 00:04:48 And the back pick at third was huge. I honestly don't know what was it Meredith. Midroth. Yeah, was it him on third? Yeah. I don't know what he was doing because that wasn't a safety squeeze. Like, I don't understand what he was doing. But hey, you know what?
Starting point is 00:05:05 The Mariners took advantage of several mistakes made by the White Sox, both today and in game one. Can you do it yesterday because the Mariners were one's making all the mistakes, but whatever. Yeah. So it was a huge play, huge turning point play. And the Mariners were once again able to, you know, dance their way through some troubling innings there in that game. and operate a big part of that, obviously. Not loving the challenges. He needs to pick his spots a little better, but other than that.
Starting point is 00:05:34 Sometimes he just lets a fly. Yeah, and it's, I mean, I feel like the Mariners are tragically awful at challenges. Except for Mitch Garver. Yes, but like, they waste them so early in the game on like meeting, like the first pitch of the third inning challenge. what? Was that last night?
Starting point is 00:06:00 I think that was last night or Monday, and I think it was Brita did it on like the first pitch of the inning. No, I think it might have been rough sider. I don't think so. It doesn't matter. Either way, I know that somebody challenged the first pitch of the third inning.
Starting point is 00:06:15 What are you doing? That's a thoroughly unimportant pitch. Be better than that. But yeah, I mean, parade a really good day today, obviously, the big home run. First career home run.
Starting point is 00:06:24 And you're going to say, seen quite a bit because, you know, Garber, while he is, you know, the primary, it is going to be more of a 50-50 job until Cal gets back. And frankly, with Garber's bad back, and now he's got kind of this knee issue as well, like he's kind of slow back there. And I do think that the Mariners might be in a situation where this might end up becoming more of a, you know, 6634 job split with Parade of getting most of the reps because he's just more agile back there. He can move. and Garber doing the best he can, but he's 34 years old, you know, and he's got a bad back right now. He's got a sore knee right now.
Starting point is 00:07:00 So we'll see how it plays out. You'll continue to see Garber in there. And Garber's done some nice things since Cal went down. So it's not a shot at him, but Parada just a little bit more athletic back there, probably some more offensive upside at this point in their careers. But, yeah, the Mariners backup catchers, they're holding their own right now, which is all you can really hope for while you hopefully get Cal back. in the next two, three, four weeks.
Starting point is 00:07:25 We'll see. Yeah, it will be an interesting decision that the mirrors will have to make once Cal's able to come back. The veteran or the actually better player? Seems to be a running theme. I mean, to be fair, though, Garvers does the best. Like you said, yeah. Hey, how about old Patty Whiz? Three hard hit balls yesterday.
Starting point is 00:07:50 A couple of hard hit balls today had the double. had the RBI double. It's the first couple of games for Patrick Wisdom. I'm the thought. Dominic Canzon today with the RBI devil. Randy had a really nice day. He got the sailor of the game honors. Pretty decent day for the Mariners' offense
Starting point is 00:08:07 outside of the bases loaded situation that they blew. They had seven hits in this one. They scored the five runs. They had two, three, four, five, seven, eight hard hit balls on the day. you know, pretty solid. And this is, you know, a game in which, you know, J.P. Crawford was supposed to hit lead off. He wound up getting, you know, getting scratched before the game started.
Starting point is 00:08:34 There's some stuff with J.P. That we're going to talk about on tomorrow's episodes. Pretty interesting stuff that happened before today's game. And there's also a couple of interesting quotes that he just put out, or that Daniel Kramer just posted from JP about a potential move to third base. As we're recording. Yeah, as we're recording. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:08:54 We'll save him for tomorrow. But yeah, I also thought Cole Young, first game in the leadoff spot. He's been scuffling lately. He had a good day as well. I hadn't realized how bad. I knew that Cole had cooled off, but I hadn't looked at the numbers. But on the MLB app, it popped up. And it was like, yeah, he's in a really bad slump.
Starting point is 00:09:16 And he's hitting like 117 or something like that in his last 43 plate appearances. So yeah, good to see him. get on the board with a double today also get on on base with a walk couple hard hit balls for Cole so that was really nice to see and a hit by pitch yeah which that's right I know just isn't really a skill although how many how many hit by pitches do they have today two two two two I think Randy and Cole um yeah I thought they called uh okay I guess they didn't I thought I thought the umpire called a hit by pitch on on Emerson's walk there in the he might have yeah because he pointed to first base it says it says on Savant that it was
Starting point is 00:09:52 a walk but all right or whatever either way i saw on points of first base though yeah like which you don't normally do on ball four but anyways yeah they had uh mayor's offense they only struck out seven times today uh they walked four times plus the two hit by pitches they had two home runs in this one and they had three doubles so typically if your doubles and your w or your extra base hits and your walks are higher than your strikeouts usually that's a really good formula but then again there's always the random game where you have two walks, no extra base hits, and you only strike out once, and you still lose, you know, two to one. So, yeah, sometimes it doesn't always work, but typically that's a good sign. And that's what you want from this offense, right? Get on base, somebody come up,
Starting point is 00:10:37 hit the clutch home run, slug when there's guys on base, and that's how this team is going to win ball games. And they did that with the major exception of what happened in the fifth or sixth inning. I think it was the fifth, though. I think it was the fifth, yeah. well yeah but but yeah outside of that pretty nice day for yeah pretty nice day for the mayor's offense outside of that though so good to see all right well switching gears here let's talk a little bit about emerson hancock kind of a tough day for him but he was able to battle we'll talk about his day we'll talk about Jose ferrere more in just a moment but first a reminder this episode daddy this episode of the lockdown marries podcast brought to you side neuterful game time

Starting point is 00:15:24 Link in the description of this episode. So again, a little bit of a tough day for Emerson Hancock. Only goes five in this one. Only gives up two earn runs, though, on five hits. Four strikeouts. Three walks, though, all coming in the same inning. He walked the bases loaded with nobody out and then was able to work out of that. Stryson Peters and then induce a ending ending double play.
Starting point is 00:15:46 and saw some, you know, emotion from Emerson Hancock, not something that we see from him a lot on the mound. Just kind of, you know, struggled throughout the day, but was able to battle and, you know, ultimately gave the club a chance to win. So thumbs up on that front. But yeah, you know, a little bit of a rocky start for Emerson today, for sure. Yeah, this is becoming, it's not a worrisome thing
Starting point is 00:16:11 because he struggled in his last out-in against Chicago. but we've seen him in, you know, certainly much more than the last, than the first month. We've seen some mediocre performances. And, of course, those are all sandwiched around a 14 strikeout, no walk performance. So, you know, that still does a lot of the heavy lifting. But, you know, I would say three of his last four outings, four of his, whatever it is, like, he's been okay. You know, but he hasn't been great with the obvious exception of the 14 strikeout game.
Starting point is 00:16:40 But I think one of the things that, you know, we talk a lot about the stuff of hand. and how that's, you know, really exploded this year. And it has. But the ability to compete, which has kind of always been there when you don't have your best stuff, when you can't really just summon the sweeper and control it exactly where you want to put it and still give your team a chance to win is something that, you know, good pitchers do. Like anybody can be a very good pitcher when they have it all working. Like everybody's in the big leagues. Their stuff is big league, you know, mostly is big league, you know, quality, obviously, otherwise they wouldn't be there. But when you can't throw the ball where you want to, when you're not getting the same, you know, spin on your curve ball,
Starting point is 00:17:24 or you're not quite getting the velo that you normally do, when you're not quite getting to the top shelf, how do you manage to, you know, work through the lineup multiple times? How do you manage to give your guys a real chance to win? Those are what make, you know, decent pitchers. That's what makes them good pitchers is when they don't have it. They still compete. They still find a way to help you win. And for a long time, that was what Louise Cassidy.
Starting point is 00:17:44 Stio was really good at too. Didn't quite have it. He'd find a way to go six. He'd find a way to grit through it. And, you know, there are always going to be days where it's like, look, even the best competitor in the world, they just don't have it and they give up seven. Like, okay, you know what? That happens sometimes. But Hancock hasn't done that yet. His worst start is the one against Chicago where he gave up five, still managed to go six innings, still had his team win that game. Like, he hasn't had a start where Hancock has given his team no chance to win, which last year is about one out of every three starts. Like the game was over before it started because Hancock was that bad and he couldn't compete
Starting point is 00:18:20 without his A plus command. And this year, he's given them a chance to win every single start he's taken the ball for. And, you know, whether it's today, whether it's against the A's or that start in St. Louis, like when he just doesn't really have it and he's kind of grinding through and this doesn't look too good. And he finds a way to go five or six innings, gives up two or three. and it's like you have a chance to win the game. Those are huge growth moments for Emerson.
Starting point is 00:18:45 And that's what makes you a great pitcher. So it was good to see again today. But yeah, Hancock, we're not going to sit here and tell you he was good today. He wasn't. He wasn't very good. But he managed. He got through the lineup a couple times. And really, again, what was the problem today?
Starting point is 00:18:59 Command 100% control and command. He had so many 203-1 counts in this game. I lost track. And obviously he had three walks and one. inning, you know, and he fell behind to Romo 3-1 before he got the double play. Like, it was bad. And in the fifth inning, he fell behind 2-0 to, I think, four hitters in a row. Like, it just, it was not something that Emerson Hancock can do.
Starting point is 00:19:27 But he, you know, again, he put his foot down, limit the damage, give your boys a chance to score some runs than he did. So, yeah, I'll give Hancock a lot of credit for that. But just in terms of how did you look today? Not good. It was a step back for him. That's for sure. Yeah, but nice to see him still be able to dig in there and make it work.
Starting point is 00:19:47 Matt Brash got activated this morning before the game. Robinson Ortiz got sent back down. Brash looking like Matt Brash, a couple of strikeouts for him. Yeah, he was really good today. Edward Bizarro gave up a run in this one, wasn't earned. But you texted me during his outing that you're, I forget exactly what the morning you said. I don't know if he said you were worried or concerned or whatever, but it's basically the same thing.
Starting point is 00:20:15 What has you concerned about Edward Bizarro right now? Command. He's walking more guys than he did last year, and that's more of a control issue. But, like, he's got good stuff. We see that the front hip two seamer still has a ton of run, the sweeper, you know, when he gets it down in the zone, very good. Like, the stuff might be better than we've seen in a while.
Starting point is 00:20:37 He had a 75% whiff on the sweeper today. but when he's missing, he's missing in the middle of the plate. Like, it's not like the pitch is, you know, supposed to be at the knees and it's, it's below the knee or whatever. It's like it's supposed to be at the knee and it's at the belt. And so that's what has me concern. And it's been a pretty constant thing. He's given up one run.
Starting point is 00:21:00 And, you know, he's kind of avoided major disaster so far this year. But I've seen four or five outings where it's just like, you know, first couple guys, or he gets first out and then a couple guys reach. And then all of a sudden it's, it's danger time. And he's kind of put himself in this, like, mid-leveraged situation to high-leverage situation. And he's got to make these huge pitches to get out of it. And again, for the most part, he has done that.
Starting point is 00:21:22 He's gotten out of his own self-created jams. But I've just seen it way too much this year. And at some point, that's going to explode on him. And he's going to lose a game that the Mariners should have in hand. Three-run lead with Bizarro in the game, you should feel like the game's over. Like, that's what he was last year. And this year, you just don't. You just feel like, you know, pitches are leaking out in the middle of the plate.
Starting point is 00:21:42 He's not quite where he needs to be. I think it's just a small tweak that needs to be made. So I'm not, like, overly concerned in the long run. But right now, I would try and limit his high leverage spots. And this really wasn't. Like, I don't blame Dan for putting him here. It was the bottom of the order with a three-run lead. Figure it out, man.
Starting point is 00:21:58 Like, any reliever should be able to get out of that unscathed. And Bizarro was on the precipice of blowing that lead. He got pretty close. And he threw some pitches in the middle of the plate that easily could have tied this game up. So I'm just a little worried about the command right now, too much in the middle of the plate. He needs to get back on the corners. He needs to find that release point, get that front hip on the lefties, especially, because that used to start literally at their front hip and run over the inside corner. Now it's kind of starting on the inside corner and it's running right into the middle
Starting point is 00:22:26 of the plate. And that's a terrifying spot to be because home runs late in games will absolutely kill you. So I'm worried that Bizarro is going to have a home run barrage coming up here if he doesn't figure out the command. Again, the stuff's good. Velo's good. It's just, he's just a little bit off. He's missing by a couple of inches, but when you're, when your whole thing is like, I pitch on the edges, I pitch on the corners.
Starting point is 00:22:50 When you miss by a couple of inches, that's right down the middle of the plate. And that's trouble. So that's why I'm a little bit worried about him. Now, Colby, all off season long, you pounded the table for the merits to go out and get themselves a daddy in the bullpen. I like dad. was that was something that was quite the bit that you ran over the course of the winner now you weren't necessarily convinced that Jose Ferrer was that guy
Starting point is 00:23:19 over the course of the show you have referred to Jose Ferrer yeah that's right that's right but over the course of the show you have a multiple occasions referred to Jose Ferrer as daddy you have tried to make me and successfully in a couple of instances referred to him as daddy as well and you know frankly for good reason because he's been fantastic he's been the best reliever in the mares bullpen so far this year now the one little like knock on him this year has been that he hasn't gotten a ton of strikeouts that was something that the mares were hoping to get more out of from him coming from washington to seattle but over his last 10 games including today or he had three strikeouts
Starting point is 00:24:05 He has 12 strikeouts. So the strikeouts are starting to come for Ferrer. And he had himself another really nice game today, despite giving up a leadoff homer to Randall Gritchick, who has, what, three homers against the Mariners? At least two, but I think it might be three. I think it might be three. Yeah, Ronald Gritchick's been a little bit of a pain in the you know what.
Starting point is 00:24:27 Look at a right-handed platoon bad who can actually, or right-handed platoon bad who could actually hit lefties. Must be nice. Imagine, imagine that. Must be nice. Didn't they get him for basically free, by the way? Wasn't he with the Yankees to start the year? I think they was just a waiver claim or like a minor league free agent deal or whatever.
Starting point is 00:24:48 Let's be nice. Anyway, Jose Ferrer. That's like. Jose Ferrer is fantastic. He is very good at throwing baseballs. And he is now getting those strikeouts. So that is really, really nice to see. Daddy's home.
Starting point is 00:25:05 sure i mean it and he's literally a dad now so i think we should petition baseball reference to add daddy to jose ferre's nickname list i don't know if he even has one uh but uh let's see the a stands for awesome uh that's so yeah Jose forer revelation i mean it's so funny that like we went from like no they can only get a reliever for harry for it to like i can't believe the nationals only got Harry Ford for this reliever. I don't understand it. And obviously, Ty and I love Harry Ford. But you make that deal a thousand times out of a thousand, even with Cal Raleigh on
Starting point is 00:25:47 the shelf. You're still making that trade. I don't want to think about where this team would be without Ferreira, especially with all the injuries in the bullpen already that they've had to suffer, like, especially with Gabe being down, like he's the only lefty you have. And he's just been really good. And even early on, it was so obvious to see the Babbit luck was going to turn. in his favor at some point.
Starting point is 00:26:07 And, you know, you could see the stuff was certainly there to get more swing and miss. I've been really impressed with the change up more so than any of his other pitches. And he didn't really get to throw it today because he faced a bunch of lefties, you know. So the change up's a legit weapon against right-handed hitters now. Obviously, the slider is the swing and miss pitch against lefties. But he can dot you up with a 99 mile an hour two seam fastball, like on both sides of the plate. Like, this is legit, high leverage stuff. it's exactly what the Mariners needed last year.
Starting point is 00:26:37 A little late, but what are you going to do? And it's going to pay Divens this year. And you can kind of see it with Brash and with Ferrer. And we've seen pretty good Munoz recently. I know last night didn't go great for him, but check out the exit Velo's. That's just bad luck. And hey, if you had started that inning, you probably sweep the white socks. We'll talk about that tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:26:59 Imagine that. Yeah. Yeah. It's not like you put him in the best position to succeed. Instead of your worst. one. Wow. Yeah. Yeah. Let's not pretend that they put them and that they put Munoz on the best business to succeed there. No. But anyways, you can start to see the vision here, Brash, Ferreira, Munoz. And then
Starting point is 00:27:16 Bizarro again, little concerned over what I've seen over the last month or so. Still overall, pretty darn good. But, you know, some, some areas there. And then we'll see from Gabe Spire. He's supposed to pitch for, I believe, Everett, tonight. And they think there's a decent chance he's activated for the next homestand. So Spire might only be a week to 10 days away from rejoining this bullpen. And again, the bullpen is you liked what you've seen from Davila or Davila. I still don't know how to pronounce that. I've heard it like three different ways from three different people. So I don't know. Um, you know, and obviously Chris Welles been fine. And little if you today. But, uh, you know, it is what it is. And, you know,
Starting point is 00:27:59 be an interesting conversation if they had taken Luis, Castillo out after his two innings instead of trying to get a third out of him because first inning, Louise Castillo was really good. No, we'll talk. We'll talk about that tomorrow as well. Because like, yeah, last night, how how things ended kind of overshadowed the fact that, yeah, Luis Castillo actually looked really good in that first inning. First inning.
Starting point is 00:28:23 Second inning, yeah, you know, a little babbit, bad luck, the walk, but he got out, blah, blah, like, yeah. Yeah, we'll dive in. presenting was disgusting so yeah so i mean it was it was kindle gravenesque but uh you know it is we'll get to the good things from yesterday's game believe it or not there was a couple only on the pitching side but you know whatever um but yeah ferrara is is certainly in that conversation now with brash and muneus like he is in that tier uh i think it's fair to say now obviously it's only been six weeks.
Starting point is 00:28:58 Like, could he implode? Could we, you know, could this fun little thing? Could he go from being, you know, a daddy back to being like a dog and then back to a dude? Sure. But typically once relievers reach daddy level, they tend to stay there for a while. Something about the aura of being a true daddy in Major League Baseball. So, you know, Daddy's home and he's here for the next four years. And the Mariners have found their high leverage answer.
Starting point is 00:29:26 could they use another daddy? Sure. The more daddy's the better, I say. But they found one this off season. Hopefully they can find another at the deadline this year. And hopefully a couple of the dogs turned back into daddies like Bizarro and Gabe Spire. Because the bullpen could be something really special if that happens. And then we'll see what the rotation does.
Starting point is 00:29:46 And we'll see if Luis Castillo ever makes that full transition. But I'll tell you, that's first inning Luis Castile last night. Daddy. So we'll see how that all works. And obviously injuries are going to have their say in all of this. But yeah, if you're not absolutely thrilled in all seriousness, we've had fun.
Starting point is 00:30:05 But if you're not absolutely thrilled with what you've seen from Ferre in the first, what, seven, eight weeks of the season now, like, what are you doing? Like, I love Harry Ford, too.
Starting point is 00:30:16 But at this point, it just seems like you're holding a grudge. So, yeah, where's been awesome. And he was awesome again today. So even the home run he gave up on. The pitch was like,
Starting point is 00:30:24 at his eyeballs and he hit it out like you know whatever that's why you get that insurance run but yeah it sometimes guys get lucky but uh daddy's here and he's here to stay and the mariners now have three daddies in their bullpen that's going to do it for our show thank you so much for joining us here on the lockdown marries podcast part of the lockdown podcast network your team every day and once again if you never miss an episode it's time to make it official join the locked on every day or club and get ad free audio access to our members only Discord and more all built for our most loyal fans.
