Starting point is 00:00:02 Man, the Astros suck. That feels good to say. Another big time Mariner win. It's nine straight against the Astros dating back to last year. Ten to two, dominance from Brian Wu. Cal Raleigh breaks out of his slump and Randy continues to be the best offensive player on the Mariners. Let's talk about it on the Mariners Postcast. This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Come one, come on to the Mariners Postcast. We got a positive one tonight after a 10-2 victory for your Seattle Mariners. Lots of big nights across the board. You get kind of a complete win, I guess, as close to one as you're going to get with a good start from Brian Wu. The offense obviously was there when you score 10 runs.
Starting point is 00:01:02 your star breaks out of his slump in the worst slump of his career and anyone in the MLB this season. And you just, you continue to get good, timely hitting from the bottom of your lineup. It's great to see and your dominance continues over what used to be your division rival. I think it's kind of, you know, past this now. They're not your threat for this division. see how bad the Astros are, man. Tatsui Emai comes back off the IEL because of arm fatigue. And I think one of the main reasons was he wasn't throwing strikes.
Starting point is 00:01:44 And he continues that issue tonight against the Mariners, loads the bases for Dom Kanzone, and he cranks it. So good for Dom. Good for Randy. He goes four for four with a walk as well. three RBI including two doubles and a home run. Sorry, he doesn't get the walk. He gets the hit by pitch.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Excuse me. That's my fault. But that brings his average above 300 for the year, which I can't remember the last time. Mariners hitter has been hitting above 300 over a month into this season. So that's great to see. But let's start with Brian Wu. Start with the start.
Starting point is 00:02:23 He was excellent once again tonight. I mean, guys, if I were to say, Brian Wu had a Brian Wu start. would you tell me? Six innings. Nine strikeouts, not 10, nine strikeouts every single time, I swear to God. And two runs, that's Brian Wu for you. The two walks is a little high for him, but gosh, we're grasping at straws at this point to be complaining about. He was really good. I felt like he'd be good against this Houston lineup. They only have two left-handers in the lineup, and that's kind of his bugaboo at times is facing good left-handed hitters. Yordon Alvarez is
Starting point is 00:02:59 continuing to struggle as of late for the Astros. He still gets a walk tonight because it's just what he does. He gets on base even when he's not playing well. Even when he's not hitting well, I should say, he still gets on base. That's how good he is. But it feels like the Mariners caught him at a really good time because he could be a lot more dangerous down the road. So get these series out of the way. But nine straight against the Astros, guys.
Starting point is 00:03:22 I remember the days where it was just Struggle City against Houston during their heyday. the late 2010's, early 2020s, it was like, man, it doesn't seem like there's going to be a lot to to kind of be looking forward to against the Astros. But their offense is still fine. I mean, they just get the two runs tonight, but that's not their issue. Their pitching is just terrible. And that's been the big difference from when they were in their World Series form to where they're at now.
Starting point is 00:03:51 So honestly, like, you know, we've been there. we can all relate to it as Mariner fans, but it's good to see the changing of the guard at the top of the division. So hopefully the Mariners take advantage. They have to continue to do that moving forward. They're now six and no against the Astros this season and nine straight dating back to last season. That's a significant stretch of games, guys, to beat one specific team. So good for the Mariners for getting that monkey off their back. There's a couple moments in this game.
Starting point is 00:04:25 I mean, let's talk Randy. We'll talk Cal after the break, but let's talk Randy, man. He's been the Mariners best offensive player all year long, and it somehow has flown under the radar. I don't know how. I've been trying to pump the tires of Randy as much as I can. Now, there are a couple things defensively and base running where he can rub Mariners the wrong way,
Starting point is 00:04:48 right, Mariner fans the wrong way. I understand that at times, but man, the dude is valuable. When he gives you 300 batting averages he's at now, I don't expect him to be that throughout this year. But man, we're over, like I said, over a month into the season, and he's at a 300 batting average in 854 OPS.
Starting point is 00:05:06 That will play, as the kids say. I mean, I love his change and approach, honestly. He's hitting the ball the other way, so much more. Yet he's not really losing a ton of power. I don't know if he'll get to 20 home runs this year. It'll be close. It'll be right around the 20 home run mark. But he won't be the 25 to 30 home run guy that maybe he was last year.
Starting point is 00:05:31 But I will take that trade off with a guy that hits for contact and hits the ball the other way and still takes walks and steals bases. That is an incredibly valuable player offensively. So I love what he's doing. I absolutely love what he's doing at the play. He looks so calm, so lucky. locked in. He knows the strike zone very well. We'll get to one of his challenges a little bit later on.
Starting point is 00:05:58 That's going to be my unsung moment of this game. But he and he hits mistakes and he takes advantage and ambushes when he needs to. I just love his approach at the plate right now, guys. It's amazing to see his development. And I know he's in a contract year, so that's a big thing for him. but I definitely see kind of a change in maybe his profile as a player because I think up until this year
Starting point is 00:06:29 he was like I am a power and speed combo guy I'm going to hit 30 or hit close to 30 home runs and steal close to 30 bases and I'll walk a lot still incredibly valuable don't get me wrong but I'm not going to be the guy that you know hits the ball the other way hits a lot of doubles you know a lot of singles stuff like that But he has absolutely added that to his arsenal.
Starting point is 00:06:52 And maybe it's taken away a little of the pure power. He's not selling out for home runs, so to speak. But I absolutely love it. So I'm really enjoying watching Randy a Rosaray to play baseball right now. Same with Tom Kenzon. He's been a really good surprise. Five RBI. Obviously, you're going to have a large RBI night when you have a grand slam thrown in there.
Starting point is 00:07:17 And that was kind of the big moment of the game. let's get to that moment here because Randy's home run was great. But in the fourth inning, let's get to that. Because that's when I'me started to kind of falter a little bit. Right away, Randy or Rosarena gets hit by the pitch. But two pitches before that, it was, could have been strike three. And then that would have been there was only two men on for Domkan zone. Now it doesn't end up mattering because you win by eight runs.
Starting point is 00:07:49 But, you know, you never know how the game's going to play out at that point. It could have been a three-run home run instead of a grand slam. Randy Rosarena challenges a pitch that is less than 0.1 inches off the strike zone. Perfect challenge on his part. You can just tell he's locked in right now. And then a couple of pitches later, he gets hit by the pitch and gets on base. And then kind of the things fall apart for EMI. Randy does steal second.
Starting point is 00:08:16 Luke rarely gets hit by a pitch. J.P. Crawford walks on a four. pitches. And then you could tell after the pitching discussion with Emi, he was like, all right, I just need to get one over. And that is when Dom Kanzone ambushes on the first pitch for a get-me-over slider to take the Mariners to six to two leads. So we've talked about this before, guys. It's a process when it comes to walks and getting on base and hit by pitches and stuff like that. When you put pressure on the pitcher to throw strikes, he's going to have to come in the zone. and that's when you can, you really take advantage of the mistakes. So good for Dom for doing that.
Starting point is 00:08:50 Good for the first three guys for getting on base ahead of him. Let's take a quick break. We'll come back and talk about Cal as he breaks out of his over 37 slump. And, you know, what that means, if he's looking that much better, if this is just kind of a one-off, let's talk about that next year on the Mariners Postcast. For me, I actually traded on this Mariners game today. I felt pretty good about Brian Wu going into this game. I didn't know what I was going to see from Tatsu, I'mai. Mariners against right-handed pitchers have tended to be much more successful than versus lefties.
Starting point is 00:10:39 So great to see that that one paid off for me. You can do the exact same thing on Kalshi. trading against peers in a live market, meaning there's no house. And as the probability changes, you can buy in and out of your position for a limited time, download the Calci app and use code locked on to get $10 when you trade 10. Welcome back, Mariner's postcast, Anderson Hurst with you. 10-2 Mariner victory over the Houston Astros. They move to 21 and 22 on this season. Please, the quest for 500 continues. Man, the Houston Astros are bad. They're 16 and 27, and they look worse than that,
Starting point is 00:11:42 at least when the Mariners play them. They just can't pitch. Their offense is okay at times. But, man, it's a far cry from what we're using, used to seeing from the Houston Astros. So you won't see any tears from me on that one. I'll just put it that way. Let's go through the lineup really quick. I know I mentioned Cal will get to him in a second.
Starting point is 00:12:05 Julio does have probably his worst offensive night in the kind of recent past. And of course, it comes on the day that Cal breaks out of his slump. I don't know what it is with these two guys. It feels like they can't both be successful in the same day. It's always one or the other instead of both. It's okay. Julio's still been great all year long. He's over five at two K's tonight.
Starting point is 00:12:32 It's just is what it is. You're not going to have a great night at the plate every single night. Brendan Donovan, one for four. He's been a little quiet since coming back from the IL. So hopefully he kind of bounces back a little bit better. Josh Nader one for five, kind of middling right now, but the big one, Cal Raleigh, like I said, two for four, and there were two singles. And even before he hits the single, he hits the ball hard to left center field. It looks like he's getting more and more comfortable.
Starting point is 00:13:04 I think it's one of those things where once the first one falls, it'll kind of open the floodgates a little bit. I really hope so because the Mariners need Cal Rale to be good offensively moving forward. He looks great behind the plate. So I don't think his injury, quote unquote, is affecting him that much. He just fixes his timing a little bit. And I think everything will be fine. We talked about Randy. Luke Rayleigh gets a hit tonight, including a walk as well.
Starting point is 00:13:32 J.P. Crawford gets a hit and two walks. Three on base day for JP. We'll take that. Dom can zone with the Grand Slam. Do get an O for a night from Cole Young, but does get a walk as well. Mariner's, as I'm saying that, the Mariners got six walks today. I think that's a good one. Moving forward, again, we look at process when you're walking a lot.
Starting point is 00:13:54 You're forcing the pitchers to throw strikes. Then you start to take advantage of when pitchers just need to throw strikes. And you have predictable counts. Good things happen. So good night for the Mariners offensively. The bullpen looks good as well. After Brian Wu gets through six. And in a career high, 104 pitches, Alex Hoppe comes
Starting point is 00:14:14 in throws two good innings and then Domingo Gonzalez. Congratulations on your major league debut. That's going to be my unsung hero of the night. Obviously it takes, you know, it takes a lot to get to the major league level and the guy is 26, a little on the older side. Good to see him get an opportunity and a perfect kind of landing spot for him, gets his first strikeout as well. Congratulations to Domingo Gonzalez on your major league debut. Mariners do get the win. That's two in a row in this series. That's, six in a row on the season against the Astros, and that's nine in a row overall against the Astros. So let's hope the dominance continues against your rivals from the Lone Star State.
Starting point is 00:14:59 We'll be back with you guys tomorrow. It is a four-game series, remember. So normal start time tomorrow at 510 Pacific time. You got Bryce Miller making his season debut versus Lance McCullors Jr. Be interesting to see what we see from Bryce moving forward. We'll talk with you guys a little bit down the road after tomorrow's game. Have a good one. Go Mariners. Talk to you guys.
