Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Uh, yeah. Yeah, that just happened. One hit against the San Diego Padres and you get swept. I hope this is rock bottom, guys. I really do.
Starting point is 00:00:35 But I don't know if it is, considering their situation with injuries, and just how pathetic the offense looks right now. It's, I don't think it, it's hard to think that it could get worse than this, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility with how these guys are playing right now. I'm struggling to find any sort of positivity from this series, minus the obvious of Colt Emerson getting called up.
Starting point is 00:01:04 I thought he looked actually pretty decent today. A couple hard hit balls and a walk. Can't ask for much more than. that. I would have liked him to make the play at third base, but we can get to that discussion in a little bit as well. Yeah, I don't. This isn't going to be one of those games where like,
Starting point is 00:01:22 all right, let's look at the moment in the game where it all went wrong. And there isn't one of those moments for this one. George Kirby wasn't good enough. And it felt like even towards the end of his start, either A, you're going to take him out a little earlier than he was. or B, he's kind of just given up towards the end. And once he knows it's kind of out of reach.
Starting point is 00:01:45 It's like, there's no battle with this group. There's no sense of urgency. And this is like the fifth straight year of this happening where, you know, you have a team that's battling to be in the playoff hunt. And, you know, you get to the point in mid-May. where you're like, all right, now it's time to figure it out. And you have to battle back and climb out of a hole. And I thought this year's Mariners team would be different,
Starting point is 00:02:16 but it's not right now. And getting swept for the second time this year against the San Diego Padres just shows how big the gap is between the Mariners and a team that's really competing for the World Series. Right? The Mariners could still make the playoffs. Honestly, I still expect them to. I still expect them to win the AOS for that matter. I don't see any, you know,
Starting point is 00:02:40 like main threat from Texas or I, or the A's are good. They can hit. They don't have enough pitching. I still see the Mariners winning the AOS. But the point of this year was not to do what you did last year and win the AOLS and get to the playoffs. It's to take that next step and go to the World Series, right? And I think I thought and most people thought that this team was kind of destined
Starting point is 00:03:06 for that path. And they have not shown that they are right now. That is a team that you just played in San Diego that has now beat you six times this year, six and oh. That's a team that is ready to take that next step and go and challenge for the World Series. Now, granted, they're a little more forced to because of who's in their division, obviously the Dodgers.
Starting point is 00:03:28 But that's a good team right there. That's a really good team. That's an elite bullpen, has some good starting pitching, although, the last two guys should not have diced you up as much as they did. And they're 28 and 18 now that the Padres are. And I know this isn't the Padres postcast, but they're 28 and 18 without Tatis and Machado hitting at all. That's a team that can say they're ready to go to the World Series.
Starting point is 00:03:55 With the Mariners, that's just not the case. I know you have Cal Raleigh on the injured list. I know you have now Brendan Donovan on the injured list. but it's just it's not good enough um i don't know what the step forward is for this team i don't know if they're going to kind of keep with the status quo for the majority of this season i don't know if that's an option to be completely honest we were told that this is uh this is a team that's in a world series window right that's the the way they played over the weekend is not uh representative of that um now i
Starting point is 00:04:34 I realized two of your three guys that started didn't have showed how good or showed how they've performed this season and Logan yesterday and George today. But still, like again, you're not facing Houston here. This isn't the A.O. West where half the teams, if not almost all of them, are going to bend over to you at a couple times sneak out of there with a series win while playing awful baseball. That's not the case. The Padres are a really good team. They're a really good team.
Starting point is 00:05:05 And I said it yesterday, there are Padres. There are dads right now because that's just a team that is playing a better version of Mariners baseball than you are right now. Let's start with George Kirby. It just, it looked pretty good, minus the Gavin Sheets Homer early in the game. But then it really unraveled in what was it, the fifth inning. I think it was the fifth inning. No, the sixth inning, excuse me. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:39 So Gavin Cheats hits another homer. Jackson Merrill hits a double and tie France singles. And it's all of a sudden it's seven zero podres. And you're staring being swept by San Diego right in the face. And it just felt like once that Gavin Sheets second homer went, George Kirby is just like, I'm done. I'm just going to kind of mail it in with lack of a better term. And it was late to go get him.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Dan Wilson should have gotten him probably after the second Gavin Sheets Homer at 4-0. Then, you know, you never know what's going to happen. But if the reliever comes in and does their job, then it's a 4-3 game instead of a 7-3 game. And, you know, you're feeling a lot more life. But once again, you know, the manager of the Mariners is late to react to something. It's just, I mean, there's no positive. It's usually when the Mariners lose, and especially this season, it's been like one really frustrating part of the game or the series that it's like,
Starting point is 00:06:47 man, if you had stunned this right, you would have won the game or you would have won the series or you would have gone on a stretch that you feel pretty good about. But that's not the case in this series and that's not the case in this game. You just lost to a better baseball team. and I'm starting to wonder long term here whether the Mariners are really the team that we thought they were. It's getting late to be early, so to speak. It's May 17th. Usually Memorial Day weekend is kind of that cutoff or getting pretty close to that right now.
Starting point is 00:07:20 And I feel like if you really look at their record, this loss puts them at 22 and 22. their record minus playing the Houston Astros, just one team who is God awful. Their record minus playing the Houston Astros is 15 and 25. Pretty, pretty telling that this team is not on the level of those top baseball teams. And it's one thing to tell you how bad the A.L. West is. It's another to kind of see how bad the American League as a whole is. And then you compare it to like the teams that are really. really in this right now.
Starting point is 00:08:04 And that's what the San Diego Padres are. That's just a much better team than you are right now. And it's not that they have much more talent. It's not that I feel like, you know, they're just destined for greatness and the Mariners are going to pit her off and getting to sell mode towards trade deadline. I don't think that's going to happen. They'll eventually get on a run whether it'll be enough.
Starting point is 00:08:26 That's a question. But we'll end up kind of seeing that little bit later on this season. It'll probably be enough just based off of how bad your division is. But I want to feel good about the baseball team that I'm watching every day, not because of how bad everyone else is around them, but because of how well they're playing, right? God forbid, I actually enjoy watching the Mariners play baseball. And right now I don't.
Starting point is 00:08:53 It's me starting pitching, sometimes a good start here and there from maybe Brian Wu or Emerson Hancock and George Kirby. And then it's defensive mistakes. It's poor situational hitting. It's injuries. It's, you know, just kind of hoping that someone hands you a series. And sometimes it does happen if you play against bad teams.
Starting point is 00:09:18 But I don't know, man. It's getting late to be early. And that's kind of my spiel for today. Mariners lose this one eight to three. They just lose to a better baseball team. There's no moment in this game or anything that turned the tide. It's just you lost to a better team and you had one hit. And somehow you still scored three runs.
Starting point is 00:09:37 There were, I guess there was one slight positive. I mean, we're really grasping at straws here to be somewhat positive. I got to take something. But that's sixth inning from the Mariners. Even though you just, you don't even get a hit. Having a little bit of pass the baton was a positive sign for this team. Let's talk about that next. And we'll get to our unsung hero on the Mariners postcast.

Hymns is not affiliated with or endorsed by Vietris. Welcome back to Mariners Postcast, Anderson Hurst here. Mariner's lose 8 to 3. They get swept by the Padres. Pretty embarrassing series overall.
Starting point is 00:13:31 Don't really show any signs of life. If you were to pick out one positive from today, it was that sixth inning. Let's go through kind of the sequence here after you're down seven, zero. It seems like all is lost and you're kind of just going to coast to the finish line. That's not how it starts. And it starts with a Colt Emerson walk. The debutante, you know, down 70 kind of starts the rally here. It takes a really good at bat, gets on base for the first time in his MLB career.
Starting point is 00:14:01 Then Leo Rivas walks and then Julio Rodriguez walks to get the bases loaded with nobody out. Yuki Matsui comes in in a surprising development going to the left-handed reliever. Not. And then Josh Naylor walks in the run, so it's 7-1. And then Randy hits a sack fly. And then Rob Restner comes in and he hits a sackfly to make it 7-3 and then Cole Young strikes out. So what's weird about that inning, you don't get a single hit. you only had one hit earlier in the game.
Starting point is 00:14:32 It was a Luke Rayleigh single. But you don't get a single hit and you score three runs. And to be honest, this Mariners team, because of just the way that they're structured and we've been kind of saying this and seeing this for a long time is they're not going to be the team that string together hits and go gap to gap. They're going to be kind of an all or nothing team. Even though they continue to try to not be that type of team. They aren't.
Starting point is 00:15:00 There aren't changing their ways right now. And even when Cal Raleigh gets back, he's not helping that aspect of the game. He's not a contact hitter or anything like that. They're going to be an all or nothing team. And the way you kind of combat that is patience. Wox are the all or nothing team version of singles, right? And I realize that singles can be more valuable than walks because you can take the extra base. But can't pick and choose at this point, right?
Starting point is 00:15:27 got to find ways to score runs without hitting the long ball. And if it's getting four walks in a row like the Mariners did, great. And then hitting a couple sack flies, great. I think that was a small positive from today's game. I realize that doesn't actually change your RISP numbers because no one got a hit, but you still score three runs out of it. That's why I think average with runners in the scoring position is a little bit misleading sometimes. It's still an issue for the Mariners.
Starting point is 00:15:57 don't get me wrong, but that stat specifically can be misleading sometimes because you can still get the job done by, like I said, walking or getting sack flies and stuff like that. So that's a slight positive. That's kind of all I got from today. I guess the bullpen was pretty decent as well. They come in and shut the door, very similar to yesterday, right? Cooper, Chriswell gives up a run. And then Alex Hoppe gives up a run too.
Starting point is 00:16:22 They don't completely shut the door like they did yesterday. But you end up filling the gaps. and a series where you don't even really see your high leverage guys. I can't even remember if Andres Munoz pitched on Friday, but I don't even think you did. He might have actually. No, no, I don't think you did because you faced Mason Miller that day. So he must have been down the whole game.
Starting point is 00:16:42 So, yeah, it's just, offense is it good enough? Starting pitching wasn't good enough. That's not a good recipe for success moving forward. What's next for the Mariners? It's not going to get much easier. I mean, you got the White Sox coming up next, and you just lost two out of three against them.
Starting point is 00:17:04 It's at 640. They're still at home. And that's the other thing that I'm a little bit concerned about with the Mariners right now is they're not playing very well at home. They seem to have a little bit more comfort on the road, which is the opposite of last year. When they were at home, they were a very good team. So I'm curious kind of how that plays out.
Starting point is 00:17:24 I wonder how much the manager goes into that whole equation. But again, I don't know exactly, you know, what's going into everything. You got Noah Schultz, actually a pretty dang good pitcher, a lefty. Oh, great. So you're going to see Rob Reff Snyder probably and probably Connor Joe as well. You are going against Brian Wu. So hopefully he can kind of step it up. He's had two good starts in a row.
Starting point is 00:17:48 Just got to stop it at this point. So Mariners, I hope it's rock bottom, guys. what I'm going to end on this one. Actually, that's not where I'm going to end on this one. We're going to end on this one is saying, congratulations to Colt Emerson for getting called up. That's my own second hero of this game. I think he looked pretty good. He did, I don't know if they technically gave him the error for the miss throw. It doesn't get past Josh Naylor. I feel like Josh Naylor maybe could have stretched to get that as well. It's not like it was a completely errant throw. I still want to see him playing shortstop,
Starting point is 00:18:23 but that's not an option right now with Brendan Donovan out. So he'll be playing third base for the time being. And I wonder how long that Brendan and Donovan injury is going on because I feel like if it was a short-term thing, Colt Emerson wouldn't have been called up. But I don't know. We'll see what ends up happening. Hopefully the mayors can turn this around, guys.
Starting point is 00:18:41 I want to do some more exciting postcasts. I don't like doing these subdued, ticked off Anderson Hearst postcast. But that's kind of where I am right now. We'll talk to you guys after the game tomorrow. Again, 640 first pitch, Brian Wu versus Noah Schultz. Hopefully you can go get the White Sox series and kind of get back at him on that front. Have a good one.
Starting point is 00:19:04 Go Mariners. Stop this kid, please.
