This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Oh, man, that one felt cathartic, ladies and gentlemen.
That one felt very good.
And it was much needed for this Mariners team.
Good for you, Cole Timerson.
That was an awesome moment for him to get his first major league hit.
as a three-run, home run,
and a relatively big moment, too.
You had the lead, yes,
but it was nice to get that extra cushion.
And the Mariners had kind of given away
a couple of opportunities to really,
you know, put some insurance runs on the board.
And Colt Emerson had some really good at bats through yesterday and today.
You know, he works counts.
He puts the ball on play.
And he hits the ball hard.
like and I love his demeanor at the plate.
It looks like everything's going okay.
And he doesn't look like a guy that's waiting for his first major league hit.
And I think that's one of the reasons why the Mariners are so excited for him and why I'm so excited for him.
So good for you, kid.
That was fun to watch.
What a great swing too on a pitch below the zone puts it out over the right field wall.
Fantastic piece of hitting there from Cole Timberson.
I'm excited for him for years to come.
That's my shortstop.
It should be my 2026 shortstop.
but we'll leave it at that for now.
Brian Wu was fantastic.
But the big thing for me today was the boy showed some life.
And whether it was Julio's home run in the second inning,
maybe it's the first inning, I have to double check.
First inning, excuse me.
Julio's home run in the first inning,
whether it was Randy's couple doubles
and him showing some little oomph to the dugout there,
the boy showed some urgency for the first time,
I think, this year.
at least from the games that I've watched incredibly closely,
which is almost every game,
that's the first time that I felt like,
all right,
we're putting this behind us.
Let's go.
It's go time now.
And I don't know if that's coming from the manager.
Props to Dan Wilson,
if that is.
I don't know if that's coming from players,
being like,
hey, last series over the weekend was not the type of baseball
that we want to be playing moving forward.
If that is,
then great.
That's exactly what I was looking for
from the guys today.
And, you know, you have good days from Julio, Josh Naylor, Randy Rosa Rana,
obviously Colt Emerson as well.
You know, Johnny Parada, I think, actually looked decent at the plate today.
We'll see what ends up kind of, you know, happening with him and Mitch Garver moving forward.
But I like what I'm seeing from him.
It's a good day to be a Seattle Mariner baseball fan.
It's the first time I've said that in a while.
So let's enjoy this one.
And let's start with a start with Brian Wu.
Brian Wu, man, he's your ace.
I'm saying it right now.
He absolutely is your ace.
I know he was the best pitcher on the staff last year for the entirety of the regular season until he got injured.
But it still takes a little bit to like really jump to that ace of the staff status.
I think even going into the playoffs as they stated themselves with George Kirby being the guy to get game.
one in any sort of full rest situation that that was in their eyes the ace of the staff i think
brian woo was officially surpassed that i think he's officially the guy uh on this staff now and um
he's the guy i have most faith in now long term whenever he's he's going to shove when we absolutely
need him to shove uh it's it's really it's really good to see and i like his energy on the mound guys
You know, one thing about the Mariners pitchers is they all kind of have a different energy on the mound.
Logan Gilbert's, when he's going, is very, like, does not change his facial expression whatsoever,
almost like he's just, like, in the zone, and he's, like, not changing his face at all.
George Kirby gets a little ticked off in a good way.
Brian Wood shows the passion.
He has the passion on the mound.
when he, when he, you know, gets a walk or he gets hit, he, like, screams into his glove, like,
he's mad at himself.
And I love that.
Or when he makes a big pitch and he gets out of an inning, he is so fired up.
And even when he's on the, in the dugout, and, you know, someone comes to replace him and gets out of the inning, a reliever comes to replace him and they get out of the inning.
Wu is excited.
He's thumping the edge of the dugout there.
That's what I love to see.
I love how there's kind of different energy with all the pitchers.
And Emerson Hancock also kind of bringing up his energy as well.
We'll talk about him a little bit later when he makes his start.
So I just love what I see from Brian Wu right now.
And the big thing with him is he was such a fastball heavy guy.
And I was afraid there was going to be a little bit of an adjustment period
when teams started to kind of key in on.
that and it's easier said than done but just got to throw your secondary pitches a little bit more and
today was the slider and god that's so good from him that's so good from him and let's let's face it johnny
parrata calling the game as well noticing that the white socks are going to be pretty aggressive
um and taking advantage of that and having it especially with all the left-handed hitters in their
lineup the slider worked wonders today it was really really really good and
really fun to watch.
I enjoy watching Brian will pitch almost every single time he's out on the mound.
Offense as a whole was really good.
I know you only get eight hits.
I mean, that's not an only for the recent Mariners.
That is a lot of hits.
Josh Naylor, three hits today.
Fantastic from him.
He had been kind of slumping a little bit.
so good to see him start to break out of it and kind of get back to the the uh Josh neither that we know and love and the biggest thing guys with this offense is today they faced a left-handed pitcher and they faced multiple left-handed pitchers you face Schultz and Icert both lefties so first Schultz for five and a third and then Icer for two-thirds so for six of the nine innings you face a left-handed pitcher
And you could tell the White Sox were keyed in, knowing the scouting report against this Mariners team,
was that they struggled against left hand of pitching.
And their scouting report was to just go out and with the lefties.
And, you know, Rob Reffsner doesn't get a hit, but he actually, he looked better today.
He hit the ball hard a couple times, and he should have had a walk as well.
It's just how it is.
But the process looked much better.
that's something you can easily say compared to his previous days being either pinch hit
or starting against the left-handed pitcher.
But the big thing is the rest of the lineup, man.
I said this before.
Mariner's struggles versus left-handed pitching didn't make a ton of sense to me.
I get with their platoon guys that Luke, Rayleigh, and Dom Kahn's owner better than Robbner,
and Connor Jeff.
That's just flat out, I understand that.
But if you look at their best hitters, and I would say,
When healthy, their best hitters are Julio Rodriguez, Cal Raleigh, Randy Rosarana, Josh Nala.
Those four guys, right?
Three of those four guys are can bat from the right-handed batters box with Cal Rale being a switch hitter
obviously.
So the excuse is that, you know, yeah, we just struggle against lefties.
It doesn't work for me because you have guys that obviously have the right-handedness there.
And Julio, to give him credit, has always kind of mashed against lefties.
so he's more often than not done his job. Randy's kind of platoon proof, so to speak,
where he's kind of the same versus both. Josh Naylor definitely better versus right-handed
pitching and Calderale also better versus right-handed pitching, although last year he did turn
to mash some lefties a little bit more, but that hasn't been the case this year. So that's why
it was so encouraging for me to see them do this against Noah Schultz, who yes, he had issues with
walks, but he had, he definitely has some good stuff. And I don't, he only, he actually didn't
walk anyone today. So it's not that his current, his, um, recent issues kind of came back and
haunted him today. He, by all means, if Noah Schultz was going into this game saying, hey,
I just can't walk anyone, I'll let my stuff dominate. Um, he did what exactly what he wanted to
do. It's just the Mariners hitters took advantage of it. And I, I love that that's kind of what happened
here. And it's, it really kind of played into the hands of feeling good about where the Mariners are at right now.
So I, that's a big positive for me from this game. Let's take a quick break. We'll come back.
We'll talk about Colt Emerson and we'll talk about the bullpen. Those are two huge kind of parts of
this game that get underlooked. I mean, obviously, Colt Emerson is going to be the story of this game,
but the bullpen gets overlooked, especially Jose Ferrer. My.
guy. I know I've been pumping his tires almost all year long, but it's great to see him continue
to have success. And he's he's one of my favorite Mariners relievers right now. We'll talk
about that next year on the Mariners Postcast after a six to one victory for your Seattle

Welcome back, Mariner's Postcast, Anderson Hurst, with you guys.
We're talking about a Mariner victory here for the first time in four days,
which is great to finally have here.
6-1 over the White Sox.
They moved to 23 and 26 on the season.
offense was good pitching was good um let's talk about colt emerson guys um it was only a matter of time
before this happened and i i didn't expect his first hit to be a home run but it's good to see
his approach at the plate get rewarded because uh i did not get the feeling if you were just to turn on
the game uh as a regular m lb fan not knowing the situation excuse me that colt emerson was making
his major league debut or had not gotten a major league hit like today, you wouldn't know from
looking at his at bats in the batters box. A lot of the times you can see these younger hitters
come up and they really press. They're trying to get something done. And, you know, a lot of times,
it's really good hitters. Players that end up being really good in this game. And it's just that
getting that first one out of the way is so important. He stayed true to his approach. You know,
a couple hard hit balls yesterday. I felt like he could have.
have gotten a hit, but good for him for saving it for when his parents were in the stands
and getting that one as a home run. And like I said, I'm not going to say it's a completely low
leveraged situation. It's a 3-1 game at that point. 3-1 versus 6-1 is a huge difference. So,
good for you, Colt Emerson. I'm excited to watch him for many years to come as a Mariners fan.
My unsung part of this game is the bullpen. Man, um, Wu goes
six strong. I probably would have left him out for the seven. It's funny because I'm saying that
the bullpen was good, but also that you could have left Wu out for another inning.
Bizarro comes in, gets two quick outs, looks strong, and then doesn't really get a ton after that.
He isn't able to get through that seventh inning, which, you know, Brian Wu was at, I think,
90 pitches at that point.
He gets, so Bizarro comes in, gets Ben and Tennettany to fly out,
Kellanick strikes out, and then Tristair Peters hits the home run.
And then Drew Romo singles, and it's like, all right, let's, you know,
kind of get this going here.
And then Chase Midroth, the pinch hitter comes in and walks.
So three straight guys get on for Bizarro, and he can't get out of that seventh inning.
So Jose Ferrer comes in to replace him to get.
get through the seventh and then the eighth after that.
And man alive, does he look good right now?
I love watching him pitch.
Gets a little unlucky in the eighth with play that should be made by J.P.
Crawford.
We'll leave it at that.
He tries a little jump throw or whatever.
But it's his range.
That's the issue.
It's not the arm.
I mean, it is the arm.
But the range is the main issue, which is what makes him rush that throw right there.
Really wish Colt Emerson was playing there.
But I know that's not an option right now.
Once Brandon Donovan comes back, that will be a discussion for sure.
But overall, Jose Ferrer looked fantastic.
I love what he brings to this bullpen.
It's not just against lefties, too.
That's the thing that's been surprising to me.
He is not just a lefty specialist.
He's actually been very effective against right-handed batters as well.
That change-up's been working.
He's kind of front-drawing the sinker in that kind of inside part of the plate.
It's great.
And he just has a little bit of aura on the mound.
I love his just confidence that he walks out with.
He knows that he's not, you're not going to hit him hard, right?
It's going to be soft contact.
And if the defense behind him makes plays,
then you're not going to get much by Jose Ferrer.
So love watching him pitch.
He's my unsung hero for this game.
Andres Munoz comes out after the Colt Emerson home run
and closes the door first time seeing him in four days.
So good to see this Mariner victory, 6-1 over the White Sox,
a team that have been really hot recently.
So this is a big win.
tomorrow going up against Anthony Kay, who kind of diced you up last time,
another soft throwing left-handed pitcher who the Mariners tend to struggle with.
So we'll see if they're their streak or they could start a streak of being successful
against lefty starters.
Bryce Miller is getting the start tomorrow.
We heard earlier today that is not a piggyback situation.
Looks like it's going to be straight up Bryce Miller.
That doesn't necessarily mean he won't get the quick hook.
and maybe we'll see Luis Castillo out of the bullpen for the first time in his career.
So that's an intriguing aspect at tomorrow's game.
But we'll be with you guys talking about that one right after the game tomorrow, 640 first pitch.
Let's go get the series win.
Let's put last weekend in our rearview mirror and, you know, get back to the White Sox who beat us last week as well.
So Mariners win this one, 6-1.
Great series, or sorry, great series opener.
And good for Colt Emerson, good for Bromerson.
good for Brian Wu, good offense.
That's a good recipe for success.
We'll talk to you guys tomorrow.
Go, Mary.
