Starting point is 00:00:01 Okay, that is the Mariners baseball that I'm used to seeing. Good start, timely hitting, even though you're not blowing the cover off the ball, but the bull freaking hen does its job, run prevention, couple decent defensive plays. That's Mariners baseball. Let's talk about it on the Mariners Postcast. This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. part of the locked on podcast network your team every day what up fam anderson hirsched
Starting point is 00:00:43 with you guys here welcome to the mariners postcast we go live right after every single mariner game it's great having you guys in the chat hanging out i see all your messages thank you so much for tuning in with us and it's so much more fun after our mariners win like today uh this felt like a much needed get right series for the mariners and they are off to a good start in that Get Right series against Houston. They need to make up for the bad series loss against the White Sox early on. This was a big one to get tonight because George Kirby was, honestly, George Kirby was really good today,
Starting point is 00:01:20 just didn't have the efficiency that we're used to seeing from him this year. But in terms of his stuff and his outcomes, fantastic from George Kirby. But in terms of how your bullpen was lining up, I was a little worried. Him just going five is probably not good enough. You get a great outing from Nick Davila. You get a great outing from Cooper Criswell. You get a great outing from Edward Bizarro.
Starting point is 00:01:46 And Andres Munoz comes in and does give up the hit to Altuva, but then strikes out Yordon Alvarez to end the game. Bull freaking Penn is the reason you won this game today. The offense wasn't great. Julio continues to stay hot. He's kind of him and Randy are kind of carrying this team offensively right now. Good to see Canzon and Young get hits as well. But yeah, it's, you get just enough offense.
Starting point is 00:02:13 But if you have the pitching like you did tonight for the rest of this season, this team will be in very, very good shape. Let's start with the start. George Kirby was really good. Honestly, like you look at the eye test. I know he gives up seven hits. This ballpark's weird. and Houston has a good lineup.
Starting point is 00:02:32 They have been kind of scuffling a little bit more as of late. But seven hits, just the one-earned run. Two walks is a little bit high for George, but seven K's. He's been your best pitcher all season in my humble estimation. And he showed it once again tonight. Would have liked to get him through six, yes, but he had 98 pitches at that point. So it was the right move to take him out.
Starting point is 00:02:58 It's just you didn't feel great about the bullpen at that point. in time with how things were at you you're already down brash and spire and you find out today that Jose Ferreier is going on the paternity list. So three of your high leverage guys are all down. You're going to have to piece this one together, baby. And boy, did you. I mean, you got Nick DeVila. What, I mean, what an outing. Dude goes against the kind of heart of the order in a close part of the game does give up the one hit. But Cooper Chriswell, looks great. Edward Bizarro, huge bounce back from him. I didn't, I just, he does give up the one walk, but strikes out the side on 11 pitches after that. And then Andres Munoz, of course,
Starting point is 00:03:43 first time pitching in five days, I believe it was. And he looked sharp, which is great to see absolutely what you needed, uh, to see from this bullpen. I think the bullpen's been an underrated positive for this team for the majority of this year. I know Munoz has gone through a little bit of struggles here and there. I still feel confident in him moving forward, but everyone else, for the vast majority of the season, has been giving you everything that you need. Bizarro, again, I know he has the tough outing last time out, but for the majority of this season, you'll take what he's given you. Cooper Chriswell's been a pleasant surprise. Jose Ferrer has been a pleasant surprise. I like where this bullpen is at right now.
Starting point is 00:04:25 I just need to get those guys healthy now. Just need to get those guys healthy, and this bullpen will be in great shape moving forward. Offensively, I mean, it's time to start talking about Julio hitting in early May. He now has a 793 OPS and a 277 batting average. He hits another home run tonight. He could have honestly had two in the first pitch that he sees in the first inning. He was like two feet away from hitting two home runs today. He is locked in right now, beats out another ground ball as well.
Starting point is 00:04:56 He's going to get a lot of hits, even when he's not hitting the ball, that hard just because he's so fast, he can beat out a lot of ground balls. It's good to see him locked in like he is right now. Same thing with Randy, guys. I know everyone kind of complains about his defense and it's totally understandable. I don't love it either, but he gets two hits again tonight, including scoring a run. Usually he's a menace in the positive way on the base paths. Sometimes that can be a negative as well. You take the good with the bad, in my opinion. but he's honestly in my opinion Randy's been your best offensive player all year long
Starting point is 00:05:31 if you're looking at the vast majority of the season super consistent I want to see him move up in the lineup a little bit but you know I'm fine with the way things are in terms of what you're getting out of the lineup besides Cal Raleigh right now and that was kind of the big discussion
Starting point is 00:05:48 on the broadcast all night long was you know this is now I think he's over 36 now maybe he's it's over 37, I want to say, Cal Raleigh. Not ideal, but he's going to climb out of it. He still doesn't look healthy to me. He did his last at bat hit the ball pretty hard.
Starting point is 00:06:11 But this team needs Cal Raleigh to provide offense if they're going to have, realize the hopes that a lot of Mariner fans have for this team. And that's being a World Series contender. You're not doing anything in the playoffs, maybe not even get into the playoffs. maybe not even get into the playoffs if Cal Raleigh continues to be as bad as he's been all year long. And I'm not saying he will, but you need him to pick it up. And whether that is an IL stint, whether that is just kind of letting him figure it out, catching, deaching. I will say he looks good catching.
Starting point is 00:06:43 He's blocking good ball, like blocking a lot of balls that normally maybe last year, because we talked about his defense kind of taking a step back because his offense was taking a step up. I almost feel like his defense is kind of coming back up a little bit. He's throwing guys out. Obviously, I think the pitchers are more comfortable when he's behind the plate than Mitch Garver. So I don't know how much the injury is truly affecting him in the field, but it's obviously affecting him at the plate. It's just, it's tough to watch at the plate right now.
Starting point is 00:07:18 You could tell he's trying very hard to get out of it, sometimes trying too hard. I still believe it's coming. I do believe it is coming soon. And once that happens, this offense will be in a good spot, guys. I know I've been playing the long game with this offense. But if you look at the entire lineup, I'm going to ask you guys right now, if you look at the entire lineup, who do you have in this lineup besides Cal that is underperforming right now?
Starting point is 00:07:46 I would argue no one. I would argue close to no one. Maybe J.P. Crawford, in terms of the outcomes. but I'm not expecting a ton from him. I'm not expecting to be one of your mashers. Brendan Donovan looks okay. Want to see him get healthy as well. Made a great play at third base today, though.
Starting point is 00:08:04 We'll talk about that a little bit later. Josh Naylor, cooling off the last couple days, but in terms of where he was at the start of the season, I feel much better at where he's at right now. Randy Rosarana, like I said, it's been your best offensive player. Luke Raleys look great. I'm not considering Rob Raff Snyder and everyday players.
Starting point is 00:08:22 so that doesn't matter to me. Dom Canzon has looked good. Cole Young, obviously, we've talked about him before. I don't see a ton of guys that are underperforming at this point. And that's both a good thing and a bad thing, guys. Because, A, you know, if a lot of guys were underperforming and where you're at right now, you could expect some positive progression, so to speak. But also, I think you can rely on this production moving forward.
Starting point is 00:08:48 And as long as you get Cal, get back to the place that you need him to be, I think this offense will be in a good spot. So we're just going to have to kind of suffer through it at this point. Because like I said, I don't think I.L. Stint is the right answer at this point in time. He obviously is dealing with something, but it's not affecting him enough to where that's completely necessary. And he's doing well enough behind the plate where I think it's okay. You just got to live with it at this point in time. Let's take a quick break.
Starting point is 00:09:19 And then I'm going to talk about unsung moment in this game. There's a couple of them that you guys can give a shout. If you guys want to give your unsung hero, you can in the chat. Please let me know what you guys think today. Mariners win this one. Three to one over the Houston Astros. Welcome back. Mariners Postcast. We go live right after every single Mariners bit baseball game. My name is Anderson Hurst. Mariners win this one three to one. Go to 20 and 22 on the season.
Starting point is 00:12:21 The quest to get back to 500 continues, ladies and gentlemen. And it will have to wait a little bit longer. But I feel like this was a big one for the Mariners, because after the tough series in Chicago, you need to win this series in Houston. They're obviously reeling a little bit. I think you caught them at a good time, too. on Alvarez is in a little bit of a slump. Perfect because he's a mariner killer.
Starting point is 00:12:43 Great. Good time to get that. Their pitching's obviously not great, but you get just enough offense today from Julio with his home run. And you get a couple knocks from Don Canzon and Cole Young as well continue to do work at the bottom of the lineup. If that continues, guys, this offense will be in good shape. So let's go through a couple of the scoring plays here because it's important to kind of put it into context. Top of the second inning, you get, Cal Raleigh strikes out to start it. Randy Rosarana hits the single.
Starting point is 00:13:18 Luke Raleigh-Wa-Wa-Wa. So you got first and second. Then J.P. Crawford lines out. And then Dom Kanzone hits a single. That was a big moment in this game to kind of get things going a little bit. Rainier-Ros-Renaed scores on the play to make it 1-0. And then right after that, Cole Young hits a single of his own. And then Luke Rayleigh scores from second base.
Starting point is 00:13:38 Good for both of those guys from scoring from second, kind of good base running on their parts. 2-0 at that point in the game was a good kind of start to this game. And then Julio, obviously, in the third inning with that absolute tank shot of a homer. He's seeing the ball really well right now, guys. Hopefully this is one of, this is the time where he puts it all together for a full season offensively. We've talked about his defense in the past. I hope that's kind of a temporary thing because we need him to be. be an elite defensive center fielder.
Starting point is 00:14:08 He's taken a little bit of a step back defensively. I hope, again, that was just kind of an early season, kind of weird situation going on there. We'll kind of monitor that moving forward. But hey, if you were to offer me, Julio takes a step back defensively, if it takes the step up offensively, I would take that trade off probably every single time. So at this point, I can't be too, I can't complain too much about that right now. The big moment in this game for me comes, I forget which inning it was. Let me double check.
Starting point is 00:14:44 It's, I think it was the sixth inning. I'm looking through the box score right now is when Brendan Donovan made that kind of diving stop. I think it's the eight. Sorry, yeah, it is the seventh. Here we go. So Nick DeVila comes in. Jose Al-Tuvia leads it off. And you're up by two at this point, right?
Starting point is 00:15:14 So if Jose Al-Tuva gets on, you're talking facing Jorna Alvarez with Nick DeVila in a leveraged situation. And you're up by two runs. Yoran Alvarez has a chance to tie the game. Jose Al-Tuva hits a ball really hard down the third baseline. Brendan Donovan makes a diving stop and a strong throw to get him out. And now at that point, what's so big, and I think gives pitchers, it's an underrated aspect of the game when you give pitchers that little extra confidence. Like, hey, if I give a solo shot here to their best hitter, it's not the end of the world.
Starting point is 00:15:50 We still have the lead in this game. So it's a huge play from Brendan Donovan at that point to make that stop and throw him out. Because I think Nick DeVila goes into that at bat with the Ardon Alvarez in attack mode. And it makes him pitch better versus, you know, if you're trying to avoid him when you're, when you got a guy on base knowing he can tie the game up, it makes you pitch completely differently. He does get Jordan Alvarez to strike out. And then you get a ground out from Isok Paredes. So that clean ending ends up happening.
Starting point is 00:16:21 But you're facing Alvarez and Issoc Paredes with Nick DeVila on the mound. So sorry, this is Cooper Criswell on the mound. My apologies. This is with Cooper Criswold. But the point still holds. The point still holds. And it's good to see defensive plays start to be made. JP had another one in the ninth inning as well on a kind of high bouncing groundout.
Starting point is 00:16:50 And it's just it's, oh, sorry, actually it was later that inning in the seventh inning. And it's just good to see this defensive team kind of round out a little bit right now. And those two kind of moments right there. The JAP won a little bit less so, but the Brendan Donovan for sure, that's my unsung moment of this game. If this team could be average defensively, I believe their offense will be fine. I believe their starting staff will figure itself out,
Starting point is 00:17:19 whether that is Castillo going to the bullpen. Maybe he bounces back. We'll see what ends up happening there. I think a bullpen is one of the most underrated in Major League Baseball, especially as of late when you have three of your leverage guys on the shelf right now. and you're still closing out two run leads against a good lineup in Houston in a little league ballpark. That's a fantastic sign for this team moving forward. So just figure out the defense and I think this team will be in good shape.
Starting point is 00:17:48 It's amazing how much things can change in like one day or two days after the White Sox series. So keep this up. We'll talk to you guys tomorrow. Starters tomorrow, Brian Wu versus Tatsuya Imi, whose last start was literally against the Mariners. when he was walking everything imaginable and couldn't get through the first inning. Hopefully we have a little repeat of that going forward. Brian Wu bounced back in his last outing.
Starting point is 00:18:12 Hopefully he continues that trend as well. We'll talk to you guys tomorrow. Go Mariners, big win, continue the push against Houston. They haven't lost against them this season. I'm knocking on wood as I say that. Go ahead.
