Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day. Not a good Logan Gilbert start. More platoon talk. More injuries and the Padres are our Padres, unfortunately. This is the Mariners Postcast, Anderson Hurst with you. Live on Locked-on Mariners, Mariners drop this one.
Starting point is 00:00:37 seven to four against the San Diego Padres. They dropped the 22 and 25 on the season. It continues to be one step forward, one step back. And the Mariners are playing like a 500 team. And they're below 500 in the record states right now. I get you have pretty significant injuries with that to Cal Raleigh. And now to Brendan Donovan as well. We'll kind of see if there's any update with him.
Starting point is 00:01:02 That means more Leo Rivas. Excellent. Dan Wilson gets tossed today trying to fire up his guys and then all of a sudden we see a different approach with the platoon situation. So I wonder if that's a coincidence or not or if it's kind of an organizational change in philosophy, so to speak. We will find out in some time. Let's start with the start with Logan Gilbert.
Starting point is 00:01:27 It's bad. It was bad. It was a bad start. His final line tonight ends up being seven in. or 6.2 innings, sorry, five hits, seven runs, all earned, two walks, five Ks, it's three home runs. And they mentioned a stat on the broadcast tonight. I think it was E.K., Eric Kennedy, that did. And I had no idea that this was the case, but I looked it up, and it is true. Going into tonight's, this doesn't even include tonight's outing from Logan
Starting point is 00:01:57 Gilbert. Going into tonight, he had the highest hard hit, he allowed the highest, the highest, highest hard hit percentage in the American League from starting pitchers, which is crazy. Because when I think of Logan Gilbert, I think of a guy that gets a lot of swing and miss. And, you know, occasionally he might give up the home run here and there. But, you know, more often than not, he's initiating soft contact and strikeouts. But that's just not been the case this year. If you look at kind of the expected stats, if you're a baseball savant savant like I am sometimes, You can see that last year, even though the results weren't there, it was pretty similar to 2024 in terms of the deeper numbers, so to speak.
Starting point is 00:02:45 But this year is completely different. Still gets a lot of extension. And he's still getting a decent amount of whiff and strikeouts, but he's giving up way too much hard contact. And to me, the issue today specifically was he's hanging the slider. He's hanging the slider so much. he's unable to bury that pitch, which is when it's extremely useful, is when it's playing off of the fastball. And especially if you can get the bottom of the zone fastball for a strike
Starting point is 00:03:15 and then play the slider off of that. He has not been able to do either one of those this year. And it's either a high fastball, which if he gets a swing and miss, great. But then you can kind of key in on that. Or it's just a hanging slider. And the splitter's been iffy this year. You know, occasionally it throws his curveball and his change up, but it's the slider that's the big issue for me. He's hanging it way too much.
Starting point is 00:03:41 So he's not your best guy right now. He's not even probably your second or third best guy right now. And depending on what Bryce Miller ends up, you know, continuing to do, he had one start already and looked good against Houston. He might be your fifth best guy. And unfortunately for him, it's going to bleed into a little. a lot of the extension talk because what you've gotten results-wise from Logan Gilbert the last two years, it's not good enough. You have too many options in, you know, Kate Anderson, obviously, Bryce Miller, Brian Wu, George Kirby. And then even Ryan Slot, like you have options. It's not like
Starting point is 00:04:21 you need to keep this guy and that you have nothing else long term. So I don't know. It's turning into a, I thought last year was more of a fluke. and kind of injury related, but the longer that this season goes, and he still has had some good outings this year, don't get me wrong. He's been far from a disaster, but the longer that this season goes, and we don't see the dominant 2024 Logan Gilbert, the more I think that that was the fluke instead of last year. So that's going to be kind of something I'm looking forward to in the next few years,
Starting point is 00:04:58 because it just, I mean, he's your fourth or fifth best guy right now. I trust George Kirby more than him. I trust Brian Wu more than him. I trust Emerson Hancock more than him. So he's at least your fourth. And depending on what Bryce Miller gets you, he might be your fifth. So, yeah, that's, I mean, still a fine pitcher, but it's just far from what we have come to expect from him.
Starting point is 00:05:22 And he's the main reason you lose this game. Let's be completely honest because your bullpen comes in and doesn't give up a run. he gives up seven runs and your offense ends up you know figuring some stuff out in the later parts of the game and it just doesn't really he's the reason you lost this game he's the main reason you lost this game so not good enough from logan gilbert tonight um and the weird thing is not a lot of it can be blamed on defense like we can say sometimes for some other pitchers so i don't know man uh it's just it's not good enough three home runs. It's what's going to happen. You can't, can't defend home runs. So it's just, it's just how it is. I wonder how much of it is Johnny Parada catching instead of Cal Raleigh.
Starting point is 00:06:07 It can't be that big of a deal to me, because I think Johnny Prater is a really good defensive catcher. I don't know how he is calling a game. You don't really know that kind of stuff, but it just feels like he's not exactly to that level that we've come and expected and come to know that Logan Gilbert can be. Hopefully he can get. get back to that point. But it's just, it's not where it's at right now. Offensively, the Mariners, first part of the game, bad. Walker Bueller was bad today and he somehow ended up with five innings of two-run baseball. In six Ks, a guy that never strikes people out. Facing Walker Bueller was a failure offensively. But then you start to get to their bullpen a little bit later in this game.
Starting point is 00:06:53 you know, you get whatever his name is Alec Jacob. I get it. He's kind of a back-end reliever. You get a couple runs off of him, and it's, you know, that's helpful to kind of get back in this game a little bit. But only getting two off of Walker Bueller's where you lost this game because, you know, besides the fact that Logan Gilbert wasn't good enough. It's just the offense, but I struggle to really blame the offense. too much because, like I said, you have two pretty major injuries to guys that you expected to be at the top of your order right now. I wonder what the Brendan Donovan situation is.
Starting point is 00:07:32 It sounds like to me he might be going on the aisle. But I have no insight information there. That's a complete guess. But similar situation at Cal Raleigh where he had something, he seemed to maybe figure it out, came back, and then retweaked it. And they got to get him right because, you know, he's been good when he plays. But it's just you have two guys right now that are in your lineup in johnny paradea because mitch garver also gets scratched and leo rivas who as of right now those two guys would be playing every single day so hard to really blame the offense i mean you still score four runs but it's against two of them were against a back end reliever when the game was basically already over at that point uh let's take a quick break and then we'll talk about some
Starting point is 00:08:16 platoons we did it yesterday um they seem to have changed their philosophy a little bit We'll walk through kind of that situation on the Mariners Postcast. Dan Wilson gets tossed and they somehow change the way they're kind of doing things a little bit. I'm curious how much of it is just, hey, because he was asked about it. Dan Wilson was before the game today, kind of pressed on it a little bit from the media there at the ballpark. So I wonder if maybe they made a change anyway and even if Dan Wilson was still in this game, that they would have kept with that, you know, gone with that different difference in philosophy. But I don't know, maybe it is Manning Acta kind of being like, hey, you know what?
Starting point is 00:09:00 I'm just going to stick with my guys here. So we'll kind of see how that works out playing forward. But let's talk about it after a quick break here on the Mariners Postcast after a 7-4 loss for your Seattle Mariners. They are now, I think that's 0 and 5 against San Diego this year. They're just our dads. It's just the way it is. I mean, it is their nickname, the Padres. They are our dads. But all joking aside, it is weird how you can go one good series. one bad series, one good series, one bad series. And no matter what happens tomorrow, this is a bad series for the Mariners. Now, it could be really bad if you go out and lose tomorrow. Or it can be like, okay, you at least salvaged it if you go out and win the game tomorrow
Starting point is 00:12:36 with George Kirby on the mound. But either way, this team just can't get any momentum going. They're allergic to it at this point in the year. So I thought this year would be different. I thought this year would be the year where, you know, the rest of the division takes a step back. that did happen. But the Mariners take that step forward and they kind of, you know, start off hot and kind of continue the momentum through the summer.
Starting point is 00:13:00 And it's just not going to be that way this year. Once again, they're going to have to battle. Not a huge hole by any stretch of the imagination, but it would be nice to get out to a lead for once. You know, as a Mariners fan, it's just, it sucks talking and being frustrated about your baseball team in May. I'd love to be excited about where the Mariners are right now. But I just, I earnestly can't do that because they're just not. playing good baseball. They're not. And I realize that there's reasons for that.
Starting point is 00:13:26 You know, you have some major injuries. I've mentioned that before. Another couple today with Mitch Garver and Braden. We'll see how serious those two things are. I'm getting ready to see a lot of Johnny Parado, which I don't think is a terrible thing. There's worse third string catchers in this league. But I don't know. It just seems like any time you feel like you're about to jump out of it, or the Mariners feel like they're kind of getting out of their slump a little bit. They have a series like they have had so far this weekend against the Padres. So we talked last night about the platoon situation and pinch hitting Luke Rayleigh and or pinch hitting for Luke Rayleigh and Dom Canzon, putting Rob Reff Snyder and Connor Joe in those
Starting point is 00:14:07 situations. We saw a little bit of a different approach today. And let's just go to the sixth inning, bottom of the six here. So Walker Buehler gets through five. Like I said, wasn't very good. and he still only gives up two runs. And by that point, it was a 7 to 2 game for the Padres. Wandi Peralta comes in. Actually, a very good middle relieving left-handed pitcher. You have, in the lineup, you have three straight lefties do. It's Luke Rayleigh, Cole Young, and Dom Kanzone.
Starting point is 00:14:42 I think previously, if this was yesterday, you would have seen pinch hit, you know, Rob Reff Snyder, for Luke Rayleigh and pinch hit Connor Joe for Dom Kanzone. Obviously, you keep Kowong in there mainly just because of defense for anything else. Plus, he's also had some success versus lefties as well. That doesn't happen. Luke Raleigh stays in the game, grounds out, Cole Young strikes out, and then Dom Kanzon grounds out.
Starting point is 00:15:10 So no results change, but it is something that I'm tracking moving forward with this platoon situation. because, and my issue with it, and I mentioned this on Twitter, my issue with it last night, and I told you guys over and over and over again, hopefully my mic actually caught it, because last night I did have some issues, but I told you guys over and over again that my issue with the platoon and, you know, taking out Luke Rayleigh and Dom Kanzone isn't the fact that they're doing it, period, right? There are times to do it. But it's the fact that you're doing it to open an inning with nobody on. It's not a high leverage situation. right in the situation last night the mariners were down by two and it was the top of the seventh
Starting point is 00:15:52 inning nobody out nobody on first bat and they take out luke grayley guaranteeing you're going to get another at bat from from connor joe later in the game and it ended up being a big one so the issue wasn't that first at bat that i wanted luke raleigh to stay in for it was later in the game so by this point bottom of the sixth inning dan wilson's been tossed uh i don't know was arguing balls and strikes or a check swing from the first base umpire but he gets tossed and i don't know if it's a coincidence uh or if they were planning on kind of doing this anyway but they leave luke raleigh and dom kanzan in the game to face wandy peralta like i said nothing actually changes with the results they both ground out and like i said i even last night
Starting point is 00:16:38 i said i don't even think i have a ton of confidence in those guys having a ton of success against left-handed pitching, it's the fact that you now have the opportunity to leave them in for later in the game. And now instead of being on the defensive, and every time someone puts in a left-handed pitcher, you're like, all right, well, I guess I have to respond with my right-handed batter.
Starting point is 00:16:59 That's not the case. Now because you kind of stuck to your guns, now you're putting the onus back on the Padres. Once that spot in the lineup comes up again, are you going to go to your righty, or are you going to burn another lefty just to get these guys out, and then you can make that pinch hitting call? It wasn't perfectly executed because we get to the bottom of the eighth inning.
Starting point is 00:17:26 Alec Jacob comes in. Julio singles. He steals second base. Josh neither walks. And then they double steal again. Randy Rosarana singles. So now you have a bases loaded situation for that exact spot in the order with nobody out. Sorry, it isn't basis loaded because Julio scores. My fault. It's first and third with nobody out.
Starting point is 00:17:51 They decide to go to Morahom for the three straight lefties. They once again leave Luke Rayleigh in the game. Now, if I'm choosing between pinch hitting for Luke Rayleigh or pinch hitting for Domcan's own, I am choosing to pinch hit for Luke Rayley against a left-handed pitcher. Now, they mentioned this Aaron Goldsmith mentioned this on the broadcast. There might have been some thought regarding to Connor Joe being the substitute for Luke Rayleigh and then Rob Reff Snyder for Dominic Canzon because, and they didn't want to do Connor Joe for Luke Rayleigh because he's the only extra guy that can play the infield because Brendan Donovan was scratched.
Starting point is 00:18:38 I just, that's such an obscure situation. and if you need to burn the DH by that point because Dom-Kanzone would have been the DH, then burn the DH if you're in that much of an emergency situation. And they did it later in the game. Connor Joe comes in later in the game. So I just, I don't necessarily think they executed it right, but it is a change in philosophy. And the fact that the Luke Rayliant bat was the higher leverage situation. It was not. nobody out with guys on first and third. And my son Austin is crying at that exact same situation.
Starting point is 00:19:19 I know it's not ideal, right? Luke Rayleigh with nobody out first and third against the left-handed pitcher. But this is where I think the Mariners need to figure out what they're doing here. And I get it. They did sort of change their philosophy with their platoons in this particular game. But Luke Rayleigh is much. worse against lefties than Dom-Kanzone is. Dom-Kanzone actually had some success against lefties last year specifically. And they actually, they leave Luke Rayleigh in the game. He strikes out on
Starting point is 00:19:52 three pitches to Moroan. Moroan's nasty. So I mean, that's another part of this. Paul Young grounds out. And then Rob Restan-Restander comes in for Dom-canzone. I get it. Dom-canzone at this point is your DH, so you feel better about just one-for-one swap here. But it's, No, it's just not what you want to see. And now it's two outs at that point. So I would have rather done the Luke Rayleigh situation and pinch it for him instead of Dom Kanzona. And I left Dom Kanzon in the game.
Starting point is 00:20:27 But, you know, they did change their philosophy a little bit compared to last night. So I will kind of, I don't want to give him a pass. But just for me, I would have done that in the opposite direction. All in all, it's going to be something that, we continue to talk about because this is only a topic because your guys that hit left-handed pitching have been so bad this year. And Connor Joe, two straight nights where he at least gets on base. He got a walk today and then a walk last night as well.
Starting point is 00:20:57 Did he get a walk today? I believe he did. Yes, he did. So he walks last night as well. So crazy that you're telling me that Connor Joe is the more successful one than Rob Brech-Snyder right now. So, but either way, even the Connor Joe and Rob Reff-Snyder. They just, they haven't done their job.
Starting point is 00:21:13 This isn't even a discussion if those guys are doing their job. You shouldn't have to put Luke Braley and Domcans on in that situation. You're kind of forcing yourself to have to think about it now. At least they did it later in the game with guys on base instead of in the seventh inning with nobody on. So I'll take that as a win for this game. It's one of the few wins that I have. Also unsung, oh, let's get to unsung. I'm going to do my unsung moment.
Starting point is 00:21:38 Is Julio Rodriguez robbing that home run? man, I have missed that defense from Julio Rodriguez. I know it didn't really make a huge difference in the game because you're still down by three at that point. But it's good to see him start to make some plays in center field. There was one earlier in the game that actually right before Duran hits his home run, right before Logan gets pulled, that I feel like maybe last year Julio gets to. But seeing him rob that home run kind of eased my nerves a little bit because lately, I've been really thinking if it's time to think about him, you know, obviously you don't have an option in center field, but eventually it's going to be right field for him.
Starting point is 00:22:19 But having him kind of step up and be that elite defensive center fielder again would be such a massive boost for this team. And it would help his value too, because he's kind of fallen into a little bit of a slump as well hitting wise. He does get the single today. But ever since the road trip, he's not exactly firing on all cylinders. You're going to go through that. But the way you keep your value up is playing really good. defense and he hasn't done that yet this year so if he's able to get back to that point i'm feeling really good so i took a massive positive from that from that moment earlier uh tomorrow sunday night
Starting point is 00:22:51 baseball guys normally it's a day game on sunday but we are playing in the uh the 420 game uh george kirby's on the mound versus lucas gilito i have faith in george hopefully the mayor's can get this done sorry i went a little long today and sorry about my mic last night i appreciate you all just hanging out in the chat, chatting with each other. This is a great community. I enjoy talking Mariner Baseball with you guys after every single game. It's such a fun, you know, part to what can be a grueling season as we are finding out in days like today. So I appreciate all of you.
Starting point is 00:23:26 We'll talk to you after tomorrow's game. Go, Mary.
