Hours after the mayor has placed Brennan Donovan on the IL again. J.P. Crawford was forced to exit last night's loss as the injuries are starting to pile up for the Mariners.
We'll talk about that and then answer some of your questions here on Mailbag Monday. Colby, hit it.
You are locked on Mariners. Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast. Part of the Locked on podcast network. Your team every day.
Ahoy, sailors. It is Monday, May 18th, 2026. My name is Tedding Azales. I'm joined as always.
by my co-coast Colby Patnode on today's show.
We'll open up the mailbag and answer some of your mayor's questions.
But first, we've got some injury news to discuss.
Again, the mayor is yesterday placing Brennan Donovan back on the injured list with a left groin muscle strain.
And don't expect him to ramp back up to full activity for about two to three weeks.
That, of course, led to Colt Emerson's promotion and MLB debut yesterday, which J.P.
Crawford later exited from after being hit by a pitch.
The mayors are calling it a right triceps contusion for JP.
which doesn't seem like something that should keep them out for long,
but might be something the Marys have to deal with during this upcoming series
with the White Sox starting tonight.
So what I'm wondering is,
will Colt Emerson see time at shortstop during this series?
Because they didn't move them over when JP left last night.
They put Leo Rebos there.
But what do you think, Colby?
No, I don't think you're going to see it.
The Meriters are, I would imagine, very interested in making sure Emerson is,
is extremely comfortable in the role that he's going to be asked to play for the next month or two,
at least, and that's the third baseman.
They already said as much that, like, hey, even when Donovan comes back,
Donovan's going to move around.
He's going to be the super utility.
He's not going to play the same position every day.
Emerson's going to be the third basement.
So the Mariners are very clearly looking at this as this is the long term in the context of one season.
This is the long-term home of Emerson, so it doesn't make a ton of sense to move him to
shortstop his second day in the big leagues.
Like, keep him at third base, let him get those reps in game reps at third base.
We know that he didn't get a ton of them in the minors.
He played there four or five times.
And, you know, last night there was the slow roller play that the throw was just a little
bit off.
And I don't know if we would have gotten them or not, but whatever.
Like those are the little things that you have to work on at third base.
And again, the Mariners have already said very publicly, J.P. is a shortstop this year.
Now they've added that Brian Donovan's going to move around when he,
he comes back.
So obviously they envision Emerson to be the third baseman,
and I don't foresee them moving on from that this early.
I think they want him just hit ninth and play third base.
And that's all you're going to do and you don't have to check the lineup every day.
You don't have to wonder what position you're going to play third base.
You're going to hit ninth for the time being.
Now would it be like the worst thing in the world if they asked him to play shortstop
for a day or two?
No, you'd be fine.
But like I just, I think the Mariners in general, they want to get guys.
comfortable. They want to keep guys, you know, in the same spot in the lineup as much as they
can. They want to keep guys in the same position, especially young players. And young is,
an understatement because, you know, Emerson's 20 years old. So, yeah, I don't think they're going
to ask him to play short. I think they're going to ask Leo Rebos to play short if JP needs a day
or two. But I really think they're just going to let him play third base and try to get him as
comfortable there as possible because that's where he's going to play for most, if not all of this
season. Yeah, makes sense.
You know, like I said on the show yesterday, I wasn't a huge fan of the fact that he
didn't play a lot of third base leading up to this call-up.
You and I had speculated for a while now that we, we bought the indicator for a
call-up would be that he's like playing third base consistently for about a week or so,
maybe even more, you know, down into coma.
That didn't happen.
He played third base only a handful of times, like you mentioned.
So he needs reps there, even though that should be a pretty natural.
transition for him going from shortstop to third base.
It's not a, you know, a drastic position change by any means.
But, yeah, I think that's probably what the plan is there,
is to keep him at third base and give him as many reps as possible there
because he really didn't get that many down with the rainiers.
Now, obviously, the injuries are starting to pile up here for the Mariners,
you know, with Brennan Donovan joining Cal Raleigh and Gabe Spire and the like.
on the injured list.
But also in some regards,
the Marrins are getting healthier.
You know, Bryce Miller gets activated last week.
Matt Brash should be activated here in the next day or so.
He's looked fantastic in his rehab assignment down in Tacoma.
Victor Rolos, the expectation on him is that he'll be activated sometime for the road trip
when the mayor's head out to Kansas City on Friday.
And he walked things off for the Rainier's in yesterday's game.
He's had a nice rehab assignment as well.
It also seems like the mayors might be set to make another bullpen move today that's not related to Matt Brash, Hector Gomez, who admittedly hasn't been the most trustworthy source as of late.
But he reported that Robinson Ortiz, the lefty of the mayor, is acquired from the Dodgers earlier this offseason is going to be called up.
The mayor is, of course, operating with just one lefty and their pitching staff as a whole.
That's Jose Ferrer.
or T's would provide a second lefty and it seems like the likely move there would be
Alex Hoppy, Domingo Gonzalez, someone like that.
Now that could be just a day's worth of a stay in the majors for Ortiz.
I don't see why they would do that though just for a day on Ortiz because Brash is likely to be
activated here, maybe even tomorrow.
I don't think they'll do it today because he pitched yesterday.
So it's possible the mayors might move on from two of the guys that are currently in the bullpen here in the next couple of days.
I personally think that Nick DeVila has earned the right to stay.
But we'll see what move the mayors decide to make here.
There's clearly, you know, a few options that they have here between Gonzalez, Hoppe, DeVila, etc.
Yeah, Gonzalez is definitely the guy going down today.
He's thrown quite a bit over the last few days, lots of pitches.
and they want a fresh arm because they're already one man down right now because they're doing the stupid piggyback thing.
And so you don't want to be two or three arms down.
So you go and you get a guy who can't actually pitch today, which is why Brash isn't also being activated today because he's down today because he threw yesterday.
So Brash will be activated tomorrow again, whether or not that means Ortiz goes back down or if they want to try Ortiz out as a second lefty for a little while.
We don't know.
But Gonzalez is definitely going down at some point.
probably today for Ortiz and then yeah i would imagine hoppy is probably the call for brash um unless it's
ortees and and you know then they're fine going to the one lefty and maybe they are i don't know but
um they have in the past uh but uh also you know we don't know how long Gabe spire's going to be
out for we haven't heard an update on him in a while and one other name that we should keep an eye on
is Carlos Vargas, who I think we were looking at late May as kind of the timeline,
and then you had the little setback, but the Mariners made it seem like that was only going to be
three or four days to a week on the setback, but we just haven't heard updates on Vargas or Spire.
So they could be two weeks away.
They could be two months away.
We just don't know.
But keep an eye on both of those guys, because obviously both of those guys are going to
slot into this bullpen as well.
And, yeah, I mean, at that point, it's probably Davila, is.
is the one who ends up being sent down at that point.
But he's pitched very well.
And really, the bullpen as a whole has pitched very well over the last week,
which is especially impressive, considering that they haven't had Brash.
And they didn't have Ferreira for four or five days there.
So, you know, it's pretty impressive that the bullpen's been as good as it has been without those guys.
Unfortunately, the starting rotation didn't really give the Mariner's many opportunities to use their big guns.
in the series.
So I didn't really get to see Munoz or Bizarro all that much,
which I mean, I guess in the long run might be a good thing since obviously they've been
used a lot this year.
So we'll see how it goes.
But yeah, the bullpen actually without Brash and Spire has been really good.
And again, the four days where they didn't have for air has actually been really good.
So that's nice to see that you have some depth down there.
But yeah, it's, it'll be nice to have Brash back and then hopefully Spire not too long after.
All right, coming up, we will answer your questions in just a moment.

got to give a special shout out to a listener of the Lockdown Mariner's podcast,
a guest of the lockdown
airs podcast and a self-proclaimed
Colby Patnode superfan.
Well, he didn't necessarily say that,
but you know, kind of.
Jim Colby.
Right.
All right.
That, of course,
would be Minakimes of ESPN,
who over the weekend,
well, it was pre-recorded,
so I don't know how long ago it was,
but it aired over the weekend.
One celebrity Jeopardy,
winning a million dollars
for the SILA Neighborhood Homeless Coalition.
That is,
Awesome. Congratulations. I don't know if she's listening today, but congratulations. That is
really, really cool. Common dub for Team Colby folk. Like I just, yeah, we have a winning culture
here and it's a winning organization and, you know, a million dollar winner right there. Boom.
And just like Yakima won two Super Bowls when Cooper Cup won two Super Bowls. Colby just won
Celebrity Jeopardy. That's all this works, right?
I mean, apparently, though,
all that's not enough to throw out the first pitch at a Yakima
Pippins game. So, you know,
I still got work to do, apparently.
All right, now, getting into your questions here on Mailbag
Monday, Code Mode wants to know,
why do you suppose the Mariners haven't called up
Brennan Davis or Brock Rodden yet to give them
a look? Well, on Davis, I think
it's pretty simple, pretty straightforward,
and it's twofold.
One, as we talked about in the first
segment, Roblo is going to get activated
at some point this week.
and the likely corresponding move there is going to be Connor Joe getting sent down.
That's why I assume is going to happen there.
And that kind of goes hand in hand with part two,
which is the Marrars are not going to move on from Rob Ruff Snyder just yet.
I would love for them to prove me wrong because I think the writing is on the wall.
I haven't been shy in saying that over the last week or so.
But I'd be very surprised if they actually did that.
So Ruff Snedder's not going to lose his spot.
Robles is not going to take his spot and therefore Davis is not going to get called up anytime soon.
As for Brock Rodden, I don't know.
I think at this point it's worth trying because Leo Rivas has been very bad.
Now, to be fair, it's not entirely his fault.
You know, he's gotten pushed into an everyday role where he has gotten overexposed
and has been taken out of the role where he shined last year.
where he was, you know, having really good at bats and, you know, being able to steal bases and all that.
And I was hoping that when Brennan Donovan returned that, you know, pushing Revaus back into that role would help him.
But Donovan's obviously hurt again.
And, you know, now Emerson is is going to play every day at third base.
So Reva should still be a, you know, in that bench role, that utility role.
But it's been bad for him.
And Rodden could literally not be worse, I don't think.
so it would be very hard for him to be worse.
So I think at this point it's worth taking a shot on and seeing if you got something there,
Rodden.
Yeah, Rivas is like the worst everyday player in baseball right now.
And unfortunately, he has been an everyday player.
Not because that was the design,
but that's just kind of the reality of what's happened first with what Davis or with
Donovan and then just kind of throughout kind of sprinkled.
to play short a couple of times because JP was hurt for the first week or two of the season,
and then all of a sudden, Donovan got hurt, blah, blah, blah.
So, yeah, that you just think so.
Like, you can't hit.
He cannot hit.
And I don't care how good you are defensively.
And Rebos isn't, like, you know, prime Evan White out there defensively, but he is prime
Evan White offensively, minus the power.
And that's just not going to play, even in a bench roll.
And Rodden is a better base runner anyways.
There's more upside in the bat.
probably a better defender.
Maybe not at short, but that's because he doesn't have a ton of time there.
But, yeah, Rodden just makes way more sense.
And again, Rodden's not one of these guys that you just have to play every day.
He's 26 years old.
He's not a player that you're super concerned about, you know, getting everyday reps
because his ceiling for you is utility guy.
So, yeah, they should go with Rodden.
I don't know why they're not doing that.
The Davis one, like you said, it's Connor Joe.
is the guy that's going to get moved down for Robles.
So you could put Davis on the roster now for Joe, I guess.
But then you're just going to end up, you know, demoting Davis again in three or four days whenever Robles is ready to go.
So it's kind of like what's the point?
And plus Conor Joe is like the emergency infielder.
You can't possibly like what if Connor Joe has to play third base?
We might actually still win that game if Connor Joe plays third base.
He's the backup first baseman too.
Like, how could your roster possibly survive without a guy with an emergency first base club,
even though I thought that was kind of supposed to be part of Rob Reff Snyder's responsibilities?
And Luke Rayleigh has like 500 innings at first base.
Like, oh, no, you have to have Connor Joe on the roster.
Oh, yeah, no, definitely can't do better than that.
Is my tone coming through?
So, yeah, it's a mess.
And I've said it before and I'll say it again,
the way the Mariners have handled the back end of their roster,
including like the two or three guys in the bullpen and like their entire bench,
it's Babassian.
We'll see how long they stick with it.
But yeah, yeah, they're leaving better players in AAA for no reason.
All right, Spencer wants to know, team WRC plus for the main starters.
Donovan 146, Cal 63, Julio 113, Nailor 100, Randy 148, Cole 106, Dominic Anzon,
122, Luke Rayleigh 158, J.P. Crawford, 122.
only one below average hitter.
How is this offense so hard to watch?
Some of its parts are less than the whole.
I mean, yeah, part of this, you look at this and you say, okay, well, they've been unlucky
because the team puts up this stat line, right, over the course of the year, they're probably
really good offense.
Now, part of it also is that Cal Raleigh hit second for most of this year, which is the most
important spot in the lineup, and he was one of the worst everyday players in baseball offensively.
So that is a huge part of it too
But I also think that
It's some really bad at bats
They haven't gotten going all at the same time
Or really haven't done it
Consistently Cole Young's been up and down
Quite a bit.
Luke Rayley's been up and down quite a bit
And when they're down, they're typically not like contributing at all.
It's not like, oh, well, this last week he was the 90 WRC plus
And this last week he was the 120.
It's like, oh, well, you know,
Luke Grayley went over 20-something, right?
And then he caught fire.
So there's a lot of inconsistency in this lineup.
We know Dom, we know that Luke, they're up and down hitters in general.
They run hot and cold.
Cole Young is a young player.
So it's tough to really bank on that.
JP missed a couple of weeks.
And obviously, Cal Donovan's been your best hitter overall.
And he's, you know, on his second IL stand.
And he's also missed three or four games with load management and all that.
So it's just a lack of consistency.
I think is the biggest problem here.
But yeah, like in general, if you told me like this was the WRC plus you're going to get from these positions for an entire year,
I would tell you that that offense is probably pretty good.
But the 63, that really stands out.
That is, and especially hitting second for most of the year.
So, yeah, it's one of those things where it's, it's, the individual players offensively are playing fine for the most part.
even like Nailer at 100.
Well, yeah, it's 100 now, but considering it was at like eight, three weeks ago or whatever, that's really good.
So yeah, yeah, they're just not quite jelling.
It's not quite fitting.
They're not getting the big hits together.
They're not stringing together the good at-bats.
They're kind of having individual good games here and there, but they're not stringing them together.
So it's really frustrating because I think we know that the offense can be better.
And I think we know that it will be better.
Yeah.
Because these numbers here suggest this is a good offense.
Yeah.
They just haven't quite clicked all at the same time or at the right time.
And it's really frustrating.
Yeah.
The other thing that should be mentioned, you know, WRC Plus is park dependent and park adjusted.
And so obviously you're going to get a big boost having any sort of success hitting at T-Mobile Park because it's the most hittersuppressive stadium in the entire sport.
That's not to say that they're like these numbers are just strictly like they're T-Mobile merchants or whatever.
Like that's not what I'm saying.
It's just like that does that does add a little bit of a boost.
and just to provide context of the conversation that we're having.
But yeah, it's ultimately what you're saying, right?
It's a big reason for it is Cal.
Another big reason for it is that, you know,
another one of the guys that you mentioned,
Brennan Donovan has played a ton.
So, you know, you're taking a 146 WRC plus bat out of the lineup.
And a guy that can, you know,
is supposed to consistently set the table for your power headers.
You're taking that guy out of the lineup for a good chunk of the season as well.
And then, yeah, it's just like it hasn't been cohesive, right?
you know, one game, you know, Luke Rayleigh
might have like a three for four day, but
everyone else can't hit with runners in scoring position,
for example.
Right.
I mean, you've given an otherworldly amount of it.
Like, these are the nine main starters.
Well, Cal Raleigh's been bad,
but also you've given a ton of at-bats and played appearances
to Leo Rivas, who also stinks.
He just isn't playing the same spot every day.
So, you know, you don't have a lot of bench depth, as we know,
because you have to, Rob Ruff Snyder is getting big at-bats,
and he stinks, you know, and Connor Joe's getting big at bats and he's been okay, but like,
whatever.
And obviously Garber is getting bigger at bats now.
So like you have to factor in the bench too because the Mariners are going to deploy their
bench as much as they are.
Those guys have to be productive and they're not.
And that's also factoring in.
And typically they're trying to pick and choose their spots when those guys hit.
And they're usually in, you know, semi important spots in the game and they're not producing.
So it's just, it's just not flowing right now.
It's not connecting whatsoever.
But, you know, again, we have to.
You kind of do have to use WRC Plus, though, when you're talking about the Mariners' offense and trying to judge it against other offenses.
Because like you said, T-Mobile Park suppresses runs.
So you just go by raw run total.
It can really, you know, sway things.
All stats can, like WRC Plus does.
So WRC Plus is definitely the best stat to look at this.
But, yeah, it's inconsistencies.
And even with the WRC Plus, it doesn't tell you everything.
So you really do have to, you know, take a deep dive.
And, I mean, you really do have to watch a lot of things.
these games to kind of understand the flow.
And obviously Spencer does because he's asking the right questions here.
But yeah, it's frustrating because, again, you just give me these numbers.
I tell you, that's probably a top 10 offense in all baseball.
And they're just not right now.
All right.

Dan wants to know since Logan typically only goes about five innings,
wouldn't it make more sense to piggyback Luis with him instead of during Miller starts?
I mean, yeah, if you're going to piggyback Luis with anyone, sure, but they shouldn't piggyback
Luis with anyone.
They shouldn't be doing this.
No, yeah.
I think you're asking the wrong question, Dan.
Yeah, I mean, like, I get what you're saying.
Why piggyback?
Yeah, it makes sense from that regard, but it's like, why piggyback anyway?
buddy. If you have to piggyback a starter, you probably shouldn't be a starter. You know?
Yeah. So, yeah. But I do think that they would, the Mariners would answer this to being like, well, Logan's built up. And he pitched all last year. Most of last year he's pitched all this year. We want to protect. Yeah. Yeah. He still built it. He had the thing last year and now this year. So we still want to kind of protect. And again, for all we know this is a one time thing. And they're soft launching Luis into the bullpen like Ty talked about last week. But I, I, I, I,
I think that's what this is.
Yeah,
we'll see.
But yeah.
I think this is their way of like without saying,
hey,
we're moving Luis to the bullpen.
This is them basically being like we're moving.
And like they still haven't announced who's going to start.
Now,
I think the pitchers know who's going to start that game.
And this is now like,
now if Louise starts,
then that my theory goes out the window.
It doesn't because it doesn't really matter.
Louise pitches the first three innings or the last three innings.
Well,
a big part of my theory was like they would be trying to get
him into the, you know, into the groove of like, you know, yeah, of starting up his,
his clock a little bit later on in the day, going out to the bullpen, hanging out there for a
little while, warming up, you know, coming in midgame, all that. So yeah, so if he winds up starting
tomorrow and Bryce comes out of the bullpen, then that kind of just, yeah, that kind of goes
out of the window. So we'll see. All right. Last question of the day here comes from DJ. How long
until Brock Moore gets promoted and also Felnan both should get promoted.
Yeah,
Felon Sulton has had a fantastic start to the year.
I think next time,
you know,
all the outlets do their,
their top 100 prospects.
I think Felon might be back in some of those.
So,
and I think he's absolutely deserved it.
As far as getting promoted,
I think that might not happen until after the draft.
Yeah.
I mean,
Felman's got to stay healthy.
That's the biggest thing.
and you know right now he's sitting which is great and he's staying healthy which is great
yeah there's just not really much of a reason to push him because the next step would be double a
yeah he's not going to play in the big leagues this year he's probably not going to play in the big
leagues next year so like what's the purpose of pushing him to challenge him i mean sure i mean
and if they did it tomorrow like i don't think anybody would be upset about it but i think they're
going to challenge him because he's earned it right right i i think but i think they're going to be
very cautious with Felman because he's been nicked up and he's kind of had an up and down career
and they really want him to sustain success. Now he's got like what a 23 game hitting streak?
It's pretty sustained. But I think if they push it like another month or so and the draft is
about six weeks away now. So my guess is that he's going to get moved closer to the draft,
maybe after the draft. But yeah, I think he's going to get called. I think he'll get promoted in July.
early or late June or early July.
But I do think they're going to slow play Felman.
I think they really want to be careful here because the upside is immense.
Like you don't want to push this guy beyond what he's capable of right now.
You want him to enjoy the success.
You want him to get the confidence and all that.
So they can do it at any time, I think.
But I do think that the Mariners are cautious, pretty cautious.
And the jump from high A to double A is one that they're careful with.
They did with Laz.
They did it with the Royal.
Like they're going to slow play this.
because also hitting a double a in that ballpark, not easy.
Not easy.
And so you have to be very sure that he's ready for that.
And you have to be sure that he can handle some failure that's definitely going to happen.
Because I don't, Felon is one of those guys.
It feels like he's been in the org for 10 years, but he's like, what, 20?
Yeah.
21 maybe.
I don't know.
I honestly, he's 20.
He's 20.
He made his pro debut in 2024.
Yeah.
So I think they're going to be very careful with this.
that we're approaching the time where it makes sense
and the numbers are hard to ignore and all that.
But my hunches is that
he's at least two weeks away from getting a promotion,
but probably closer to four to six.
I do think the draft is the time they really like to push guys up and down,
which makes sense.
But yeah,
I don't think they're going to be super aggressive with Feldman.
Now, Brock Moore,
they probably should have promoted him a while ago
because he actually could help you at the major
league level this year in theory.
And AA is kind of like the last stop for relievers.
Some go to AAA, but obviously Davila just got called up straight from double A.
Like the Mariners are not afraid to call up pitchers in particular straight from
AA.
And so I think it's time to get Brockmore into AA, get them against that higher competition
level and see, because maybe you get to July and you're like, hey, we don't need a
mid-leverage guy because we're going to go to Brockmore.
You shouldn't let Brockmore fool you into thinking you don't need a high leverage guy,
but like, you know, a mid-lever, hey, could we put him in the pile reasonably with DeVila and Hoppy and these guys that we can call up and trust?
Yes.
And I think the sooner you get him to AA, the sooner you can make that decision.
So I think more should be in AA right now.
Yeah, if I'm not mistaken, maybe a week or two ago, Adam Jude wrote an article.
And at the end of it, he did kind of allude to the idea of more getting promoted soon to AA.
So under the guys of like the Mariners think he could potentially help them this year as soon as yeah
Yeah, that's going to happen so so yeah so I feel like that's going to happen here really anytime I feel like any day we could hear
Brockmore's gotten called up to to double a and I think he's earned it I don't think he has anything off to prove you know
And again it's in ever it's just a reliever you know that there's only so much that you can protect him from and there's only so much that you can protect him from and there's only so much that
he can prove at a level.
And Brockmore is a college draftee.
He's a little bit older.
So there's really nothing to protect Brockmore from.
There's no long game to play with Brockmore.
You don't have any illusions that he's going to be a starter for you or whatever.
Like, no, he's a reliever.
We know who he is.
We know that he's performing.
Let's get him up to double A, see what happens.
And see we have a guy who we could reasonably add to the pile of guys who could help us at the big league level this year.
And we already know that the Mariners have gotten to see a couple of those guys.
like DeVila, they probably feel pretty confident can help them.
Even if he has to go back down at some point, Hopi, they feel pretty confident can help them.
You know, so they've already seen some of the depth in their bullpen.
And, you know, it's nice to have options.
And the sooner you know whether or not more is an option for this year or not, the better.
So get him to double a.
And yeah, he's definitely the guy to watch in the second half of the year as a call-up.
Like, it's not outside the realm of power.
I would not be surprised, let alone shocked.
if Brockmore through meaningful pitches for the Mariners
in August and September this year.
All right, well, that is going to do up for our show.
