Starting point is 00:00:00 It's time to go one-on-one with D.P. Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket. Welcome back again, one-on-one with D.P. Appreciate the Downtown Lincoln Foundation. As always, a quick reminder, you can join us at 6 p.m. All the way until 8 p.m. We're going to be down there at Alumni Hall downtown 11th and P for Take Down Tuesday with Husker Wrestling. Champion Ridge Lovett, and he might bring some of the crew down there again.
Starting point is 00:00:29 similar last week. He comes out for Oscar swag like great brands like Adidas champion Peter Malar, Yeti New Era and Moore. Also still time to sign up for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Indiana football game. That is a deal down there at Alumni Hall where you can sign up. And again, we'll have some Husker bowlers joining
Starting point is 00:00:46 us for the second hour. We got a few confirmed already and should have a good squad down there. So again, we'll be down there 6 to 8 p.m. And I'm sure those athletes, former athletes, will be more than happy to take some pictures and signs of autographs. Yep. Plenty of stuff there to buy.
Starting point is 00:01:01 It is the go-to spot. Like I love that place. Right. So you can do that. Of course, you mentioned Ridge, Caleb, etc. The wrestling team got their schedule completed today, including nine of the, they will face nine of the top 25 finishers from the 2026 NCAA championships. They'll start the season with Wyoming, November 6th.
Starting point is 00:01:25 That's a five o'clock start. So a little, a little bit different to get it. it in. Then the following week, they traveled to Stillwater to face Oklahoma State. Of course, they finished second in the Nationals last spring, last year. They'll face Penn and then head to the Keystone Classic in Philly. Going to wrestle at the Palestra, the famous Palestra. They'll travel to Vegas, December 4th and 5th for the Clean Las Vegas invitational.
Starting point is 00:01:59 which is a great one. I'll be out there for that one. It's a great event. The tournament will feature 33 programs from around the country, including 2025 champion of the Vegas Invitational Iowa State. Michigan Wolverines placed second in the competition last season. Ushkers, of course, missed that competition this year. They'll return home to face Campbell in December 19th
Starting point is 00:02:24 and University of Virginia on December 20th, so they'll go back to back. then you'll jump into dual-time, four-home four-away. They'll kick off the Big Ten slate against Purdue in West Lafayette, January 3rd. They'll Huss Rutgers on January 15. Maryland Terrapins will come in. They'll travel to Maryland on January 22nd. They'll come home and face Illinois, January 24th, which is a Sunday.
Starting point is 00:02:55 They'll host Indiana on Friday the 29th. travel to Ohio State on Sunday, January 31st. They'll close out the Big Ten action when they face Minnesota on February 5th and then take on Iowa. In Iowa City, Friday, February 12th, the Big Ten Championships will be held in Columbus, Ohio, March 6th, and March 7th. And the NCAA Championships will take place in St. Louis, Missouri, March 18th, 3.3. March 20th. So time and TV will be determined for most of that,
Starting point is 00:03:34 but pretty good scheduled tickets are available, get your tickets. It, I, listen, I love volleyball. Close second, Nebraska wrestling. And, and listen, let's be, let's, full disclosure, access. When you give us access, we get to cover it, and we, we love cover. giving it. Give us access.
Starting point is 00:04:01 Like, we want access for the listeners and fans. Look, we come out of pocket to cover these things. You know? You know, and I'll, let me say this publicly. The moment folks tell me they don't want me
Starting point is 00:04:17 to cover something, I will believe you. I am, I'm an ally, man. I'm an ally. And if you don't understand it, ask the coaches and the athletes from those programs. If they tell me they don't want me around, I'll stop coming around. Pretty fair.
Starting point is 00:04:39 Had several bowlers invite me to the Lincoln events and to the nationals. Again, they like the support. It's certainly helpful if proximity and access allow us to go into more detail about these teams and these athletes. Just going to say. we have two former ticket co-hosts who are now coaching in college. Yeah. We've had athletes like I'm a Spence go on to do work for the Big Ten Network covering gymnastics. Well, Kayla Vastray is the head coach now.
Starting point is 00:05:15 Yeah, that's right. She's a head coach. Jillian Martin, PBA rookie the year. She's now coaching. She's now assistant coach. And I think that'll be common. And again, you get comfortable and they learn how to interview and they learn how to put the concepts together and stories together.
Starting point is 00:05:31 Yeah, pretty cool stuff along the way. Yeah, shout out the tennis program. I'm like them hosting that challenger. You know, we had under Texas. I love the way you cover tennis, which is a big deal. Access. Access. Access.
Starting point is 00:05:43 And again, it's going to be my mission to fill up a tennis event or two. We need to get women's tennis full. As a matter of fact, they've got events going on right now. So it should be supporting pro events here in Lincoln, Nebraska, at a great facility at the Dillan Tennis Center. If you're not supporting it, look at me something to do. It's cheap, inexpensive. Bring the family, family friendly, indoors.
Starting point is 00:06:06 You don't have to worry about weather, deal it with all that. It's beautiful venues too, whether they're indoor or outdoor. Get your tails down. Get your, Corbate, you're right. He says, Brock Purdy hit the duggy, which certainly matters. It certainly matters. I mean, sorry. Black folks like people who will shake a little bit.
Starting point is 00:06:26 Yeah, it's unheard of another market. Here's what I'll tell you about that statement. And thank you for making the statement. And I want to point that out. So I was just in D.C. This past weekend, and I was asked by Penn State if I was coming to volleyball. I was asked by Penn State if I was coming to watch Huskers play volleyball there. And then asked if I wanted passes and invitations and credit.
Starting point is 00:07:02 to come to any Penn State volleyball game along the way. And then was asked by Penn State if I would cover Penn State wrestling. I was offered a Division I baseball job as a bench coach. Saturday morning, made the offer. And I was like, I can't. I just don't have time. And they were like, we'll be flexible. 50 games, 60 games, if you can make 20 of them.
Starting point is 00:07:34 will make it work. Just to have, because they invite me to come talk to the teams. Maryland's coming to town. Football's coming to town. Saturday. Friday night when they get into town, whenever that is, Johnny Holliday's coming with it. I was asked if I was, whether I was going to be here in Lincoln watching football, Maryland, Nebraska, or whether I was coming to college park to watch volleyball, Nebraska, and Maryland.
Starting point is 00:08:10 which place do you think reached out and said hey DP anything you need you need you what do you need what do you need for this weekend I'll save you the time I can think of guess I'll save you the time that it was Maryland yeah if you know you want to come and do some features
Starting point is 00:08:32 you want to do some player profiles coach profile you want you want to yeah I also got invited into the booth for Maryland play by play. I'm not going because I don't want to do it. I mean, Johnny and Lamont, Jordan, they don't need me. But I appreciate them being considerate. Probably get checks out, because we're down there
Starting point is 00:08:55 Big Ten volleyball media days in Chicago. How'd that go, Harrison? Interviewed all the coaches, all the players. How many conversations did we have that weren't about volleyball, simply because they saw us online? The only one I missed was Purdue, because I am human, and sometimes I have to use the rest of it. one i really asked if kirk cousins qualifies yes yeah kirk co chains come on yes you like that
Starting point is 00:09:17 yeah we're we're i'm i'm a big kirk cousins fan and they're three and oh how about those raiders ball out i need to talk to barry thompson i'd imagine he's just head over heels oh no i actually watch the game with him sunday he's got to be enjoying i watch the game with him sunday i watch the game with him Sunday. And again, if you Barry watches a different game than we do. Yeah, he's good to like me shut up and sit down next to him and want to break it down for me. Hey man. He's got that IQ. Yeah. Yeah. Ben says these jokers from Maryland bringing any crab cakes with them, question mark. Uh, I will say that a food item is being delivered, but it isn't crab cakes. one guess on what that said food item from Maryland from Maryland I brought you a sample
Starting point is 00:10:19 half smokes have half smokes are coming what's a half smoke are you missed you missed oh you missed out on the half smokes yeah I think so what's a half smoke that's better than a runza it's not even the same universe come on not even close not even close not even close Tap on the window and bring, bring, bring, who's in there? You got Tristan and Jay, or Nick and Jay, excuse me. Wyman. Tell Wyman to come in here. Tell Wyman to come in here.
Starting point is 00:10:55 Tell Wyman to come in here. Tell Wyman, tell Wyman to come in here. And I will explain this to you in full that Nick Wyman was given the introduction to the delicacy that is from the DMV called Hapsmoves. Harrison missed that. And heronsid just said, what's a hapsmoat? I don't know what to do it. You've been slacking on one-on-one, I guess. It sounds like, no.
Starting point is 00:11:23 And then, and then he asked me, but it can't be as good as a runza. It's pretty good, I'll say. What is this? You got just talking about how good. This was like a couple Thursday nights ago. I don't remember when it was. It was a rainy day like this.
Starting point is 00:11:41 And DP comes back and says, you guys got to try this. And I'm just like, like, all right, it's dinner, it's food. Go back there. It is pretty good. Pretty good. I mean, me, Tristan Jay, it was long gone. You're going to have to try it.
Starting point is 00:11:56 I'm going to leave it at that. That's all I'm going to leave it. For you to learn. It is closer to the Fairberry hot dog than a runza. Because it's sausage. It's a combination of meats. And it is, it was southern and then in the district.
Starting point is 00:12:15 Ben's chili bowl, which is, again, iconic. Every president, American president has eaten since it's open since its origin has eaten Ben's chili bowl. It's part of the deal. And it's,
Starting point is 00:12:30 when they say half smoke, it's not a sandwich, like you wouldn't call a kibasa a sandwich. It's its own thing. But half smokes, and we had them delivered from Ben's Chili Bowl. He also delivered
Starting point is 00:12:44 Ben's chili with it and put it together. Harrison, we will have a full tasting, probably next week then, of hash smokes here on one on. Are they just like sausages, he said? That's like saying a runs as like a sandwich.
Starting point is 00:13:05 Is it really? Is it really? No, it's something greater. It, if, yeah, it, it's, it is the best like if you took take the best sausage you you've had okay like a nice spicy yeah yeah yeah take all
Starting point is 00:13:26 and then put them all together in one that does sound like right up my alley let me have that sounds awesome yeah I'm not I'm not gonna diss the half smokes it sounds like Ray says I bid to Ben's chili bowl it's fantastic it really is the the one of all ones um Ben says the best half smokes for
Starting point is 00:13:46 from I'm licensed grills on the street corner. You're not wrong. You're not wrong. We had, so they delivered the Hassbooks and then Farley had his guys down at Whiskey Beard grill it. And then bring it back up here. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:04 That's all I'm going to say. It's all I'm going to say. I'm learning. Maryland's going to deliver. I may still have them deliver crapcakes too. I just would like some seafood for Maryland. Just give me the seafood. crab cakes, bring it off.
Starting point is 00:14:17 You want crack cakes. You see food. Unless you're doing Maryland crap. Yeah, I mean, that's what I was thinking. I just want. Jay Foreman, I gave, I gave Jay my guy, uh, Chesapea crabs.
Starting point is 00:14:31 Uh, Jay Foreman wanted some, and he had, he had them delivered a couple of months ago. Yeah. Ask Jay Foreman about this. You ever have like the Midwestern crabs? Broadads.
Starting point is 00:14:44 Listen to me, man. Listen to me, man. That's like insulting me. Listen. That's all we got, D.P. It's not an insult. It's just... Do better.
Starting point is 00:14:52 We can't, man. We're landlocked. Do better. Listen, I... No. I... If you want to bring a body of water, we can get real crabs,
Starting point is 00:15:01 I'm happy. Good luck. I'm just going to tell you that from the, from the Chesapeake, from the Potomac, from the Atlantic. Not so much from Potomac, truth be told. but and then have smokes he's he's not wrong in saying that the street corner it's like hot dogs
Starting point is 00:15:24 corner vendors corner tacos yeah yeah better it's just better food it's just better food corner hot dogs corner sausage corner tacos yeah new york that's first thing i did let me let me find a street dog 100 he said bring in a case of natty bow Are you familiar with Natty Boe? No. Harrison, Arns. No, Natty Lights. Natty Bo.
Starting point is 00:15:50 So back in the DMV in that area, Baltimore slash D.C. National Bohemian, National Bohemian beer. And it was the centerfield clock, long jeans, but there's a sign at RFK, national. And they would describe it as Natty Bo. have a Natty Bo boys Have a Natty Boe And It was often used to brew crabs
Starting point is 00:16:23 It Okay, that makes sense Right, with Old Bay Yeah, yeah, yeah Maryland Crabbs Nadi Bow Winning Winning
Starting point is 00:16:35 Clickouts in D.C., Ready, go with Maryland Crab Mm-hmm, Maryland Crabb Natty Bo Half smokes Oh, half smokes Natty Bo Maddie Bo
Starting point is 00:16:46 Old base Seasonic Can't lose I mean all that's up I'm not gonna I'm not gonna hate on that game whatsoever
Starting point is 00:16:52 Can't You hear me How about it We give you like a deep fried Calfish You ever been like the Fish fries around here I don't do
Starting point is 00:17:01 Local fish fries Every time you say this man I don't do it I don't do it I don't do it Is you your mind You blow If I can go out on a boat
Starting point is 00:17:11 Uh huh and get my fish fresh. Yeah, that's where these fish fries are. The fresh catfish. Hear me now. No. Go on, man. I'm going to go out on the boat.
Starting point is 00:17:27 You look at the fat catfish. Have the boat. Are you, are you trusting upstream catfish? I'm just trusting not stillwater cafe. Are you trusting upstream catfish? Yeah, because those ones are moving a little bit. They're still eating the bottom basting us,
Starting point is 00:17:45 but they turn it into something delicious. That's all the grimy, man. That's all the grimy. The grimy is good for immune system. No, it's not. It really isn't. It really isn't. I'm not, I don't need none of that.
Starting point is 00:17:57 I don't need none of it. Yeah, it's, it's, there's a little bit to that. So are you, if you give me like the ultimate Midwestern platter, like you get it. What would be? Homemade fried chicken. potatoes and gravy. But that's not the best fried chicken in the country.
Starting point is 00:18:15 Why would I get fried chicken from the Midwest? Why would I do that? It's got love in it. Boy, by. Made with love, BP. That's what the Midwest has got going on. Man, man, that is hilarious. Missy, it would be my dog.
Starting point is 00:18:35 So, if we're having the discussion, steaks, burgers, barbecue brisket. Yeah. If you tell me that in the Midwest and then I mean we definitely got the cowl corn right, right? Full corn. Uh, what else? What else is on the on the, so if we're, if aliens show up here tomorrow. Yeah. And they said, make me a plate of your best Midwestern food or your best Nebraska food. What are they making? Corn on the cow and who's making. And who's making it. Farmer Greg. Farmer Greg.
Starting point is 00:19:14 Yeah, you trust your, trust your locals. You don't have a guy. You don't have a guy? We do. His name is Roger Merkel. He makes all the chicken guy. The chicken guy.
Starting point is 00:19:23 Shut up, free shout out for Roger Merkel back in the arning. You need a guy, man. You need a guy. You need a guy. Actually, you know what you need? You're black grandma.
Starting point is 00:19:32 That's why, that's why I, listen, what's you had, you've never eaten the food of a black grandma. I can just say that. And I can tell. You are accurate.
Starting point is 00:19:43 I had a boy, bed, Ben with a can of the netty, Bo with the baseball on it with the beer. Absolutely. Absolutely. He's the might wear the Maryland. Yeah, I think that's amazing. I do like when Mary,
Starting point is 00:19:56 I wish, like I love that Maryland when they put the flag on their uniforms. Chris says this, he says, fresh catfish is wonderful. You have to make sure to cut out the red veins and yellow fat. Yeah. But that's part of it, right? Just don't make that face.
Starting point is 00:20:11 that's part of it. That's you got any fish you eat. When you're cleaning the shrimp, you gotta get rid of the part. It's got all the nasty. But this is the thing that's where I don't eat it. You don't eat shrimp? Okay, so with current condition of food.
Starting point is 00:20:25 Well, now, I can accept it now. I am currently in a space where I am dangerously close to vegetarian. You can't even eat the lettuce these days. I don't know. Right. I mean, I'm literally like, if you can't pull it from the ground,
Starting point is 00:20:41 I'm really not, if you can't pull it from the ground and cook it, I'm probably leaning away from it. And that's really upsetting to me because I love, I love, like, I want to trust the butchers. Yeah. But I don't know that we can. And how much time do you have to go straight to butcher? So shout out to Mercado and like that. Okay, that's kind of the lane that I have to be in is trust that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:08 But small town meat larkers in Nebraska or a gym. I will say. Like that's where you get the best beef. I got someone that said prime rib. Like, yeah, all that good stuff. Misty's prime rib, master's hay was corn. Yeah, I'm not sure salads on the list anymore.
Starting point is 00:21:20 But it might be. I don't know if it's like we're Nebraska. We got the best salad. Definitely fits with the meal. So farmers market, can you trust all of the vegetable and fruit? 100%. 100%.
Starting point is 00:21:32 You get the best apple side. So the hay market market, we can trust. Yeah. I've got someone. makes like homemade pop tarts incredible preserves same no like they make the they make the bread the same and then they get like the real fruits that they harvest and you get the real jelly not like whatever they put i don't even know what's in a pop tart it's not real jelly yeah i don't think
Starting point is 00:22:00 the sponsors anytime soon so i'm okay with saying that right i mean i this is why i would ask is what what the idea yeah i mean hank says i mean it that it would be the the the Misty's prime mashed potatoes, corn. That's pretty accurate. Is that, is that, so the aliens come and say, take me to your best meal. That's, that's what we're at. You're definitely getting mashed potatoes and gravy. Corbate says the smoke barbecue ribs, but the folks in Kansas City would yell at you and say,
Starting point is 00:22:28 that's not the best. Yeah, I don't know if we're known for a barbecue like that. Now, some people can throw it down. And there's still, what's the best barbecue in town, in Lincoln? That's a good question. I don't know. There is not a barbecue spot I have in mind. Hmm.
Starting point is 00:22:47 Tactical 504-6 says this. What if you did cheesy potatoes and not mashed? I'm okay. I'm out on the cheese potatoes. As long as it's as long as it's real potato. Yeah. The cheese potatoes just aren't my cup of tea. I'll eat them.
Starting point is 00:23:03 I enjoy them, but I'd much rather have, give me mashed potatoes with the gravy. Then you've got to have the tea rolls. Then you dip the tea rolls in the gravy. yeah some folks are coming through yeah Charles Phillips is solid like his smoke his smoke game is great same for Chubs yeah that's what I mean like there's good spots
Starting point is 00:23:23 those are those are one and two then mulberry barbecue but if you had to choose one of the three we need to do a taste test we run into the list every time we do one on one because that's the other way what's my rule number one about being on the microphone on here. Talk about what you know. Yeah, that is that is a fact.
Starting point is 00:23:44 Talk about what you know and then be curious about what you don't know. I'm really curious about those things. And then I don't know who makes the best steak, who cooks the best steak or makes the best or grows the best. This is what we need to do. We need to find a hunter who's got some tags. You can go hunt the game and DPs go goes along for the deep he goes along. No, you're not shooting. You're just there. You just help. He gets, he shoots the deer, whatever you're hunting turkey that day. And then you help them load it up into the truck. So what it says?
Starting point is 00:24:17 Kenyon Joe's smoked turkey. Never had it. I've never had it. I have not either. Dave, if your wife is cooking, the next time she's cooking, we expect to plate.
Starting point is 00:24:27 He says his wife says, yeah, next time. Chili and cinnamon rolls still haven't had. We had DPI gave up on you. Still haven't had that one. Well, I mean,
Starting point is 00:24:35 listen, man, I'm busy. If folks want me to try some of this stuff, I'm easy fine. Yeah, you are. The door's open, man. I know lead bell. He's apparently got some good chilling.
Starting point is 00:24:46 The door's open. Bring down your steak. The steak you claim is so good. The barbecue you think's best. Bring it down in, take it. Listen, I'll meet you at the door.
Starting point is 00:24:56 But so far, nothing. Crickets. So I don't know. Never had it. Brian says he goes, I make a mean chili with venison. Oh.
Starting point is 00:25:05 No, but that's not me. That's not me. You're confused me, man. Every time I think I got it. dialed into a lane. You know, the great poet, Rod the Piper. Rod Piper.
Starting point is 00:25:19 Rod Piper. Roddy says, every time you think you have the answer, I change the question. If you haven't learned that about me yet, keep learning. What if you're like, go fishing DP? Listen, I spent many a summer day down in Southern Virginia fishing. Okay. That's not, but not sense. Not since.
Starting point is 00:25:42 There's reason. Go to break. Second segment, second hour coming up.
