The Jersey Evolution (HOUR 2) - October 7th, 2026
00:00 Coming at you live from the teammates mentoring studio. It's time to go one-on-one with D.P. A 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com, sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation. Here is your host, Derek Pearson. Say what? That's such a good baseline. That's such a good baseline. I would...
00:35 Vak, if you could just... Jeannie blink your eyes. and play either lead guitar, bass, or drums? Well, if they're slapping the bass, I always thought that sounds pretty cool. But I probably choose drums. Just drums. You just want to be the drumming.
00:57 It's very cool, yeah. You know, throw the stick up, you know? Yeah. I have a couple friends that were drummers. They let me beat the drums for a while. I had some fun, but I was off. Are you a rhythm guy? Do you have rhythm?
01:12 Not enough for a musical instrument. I can I can what are they they called like a clap my hands and stop my feet pretty good okay you're the back of the class guy yeah yeah you're that front row of the church your back row I got you I got you yeah go ahead I got you I got to be we can do the one two three four I got I got you that's fair well they have it and they had it used to be you could like wanted you to everybody to try a music instrument right and so but they uh there's always the group of people that aren't all that interested that end up at doing recorders i was one of the recorder guys oh those are the way no bog no so i could play a song or two on really you were the recorder guy
02:05 yeah i am so disappointed for you but yeah just never never got too much into it i would love to someday learned how to read music but i've just never done it well i mean in there ways to do that and and it's it's actually worth it like i'm i currently ponder taking the guitar again classic guitar acoustic guitar um because i enjoyed it i really did enjoy it um electric guitar becomes too obsessive for me because i want to jam all the time and you want to be good at it acoustic guitar I could be okay with because generally I'm not Animal House I'm not to do walking through a party playing his guitar I would be that dude I love I love acoustic guitar too because you can kind of learn a pretty simple
02:57 like pattern or rhythm like you said and pretty much sing anything over six chords yeah yeah if you learn the chords and learn how to play the chords you're okay but it also it's the same scale as piano so my guitar teacher in high school school, Ms. Grant, shout up Ms. Grant. She would teach you how to play the piano for the same thing. So you would play scales and you play chopsticks and we would play the things where you tune the guitar based on the piano. Yeah. And so then we would always have there were certain people in there who had played both and then they would go back and forth. The guitar led me to bass, so the standing bass.
03:45 And then the standing base led me to concert cello. And I had gotten too close to the sun. It was too close to the sun. It was too close to full nerdiness. I would have been Urquil. I was already in AP courses. So if you put me in with a cello
04:03 and I'm strumming with the cello. And then so I tried to cool it up by playing it with my fingers like the Flintstones did. and I got me kicked out of class. Is it cello particularly difficult? I know there's four, like four strings, so maybe. Cello and violin. I have this thing where I want to be the best I can be anything.
04:31 Cello is so uniquely in a space, violin is so unique in a space that the best violinists are epic. And I didn't know that I would commit to that because at that moment, I'm choosing. Could I be the best center field or I can be or the best violin player? I was going to choose baseball. Like, if I could put in an hour a day of extra work running routes or playing the violin, in Bach. An extra hour of you shooting jumpers
05:09 are playing an instrument. And jumpers. That's literally the line I got to. And then the next line was whether I was going to football, baseball, basketball, or wrestling track. And in wrestling, again, I made the choice. I'm a big dude. I like eating.
05:29 The weight cut thing was not going to be my friend. Like, I just wasn't going to accept that. And then for track, it was like I just found in track, I was really good. I would have been a state qualifier in track. In baseball, I was unique. There just weren't that many baseball players running the way I ran. So I was like, okay, for difficulty sake, let me go do that. It's weird what we choose and how.
06:02 Track would have made more sense because track I would have done indoor and outdoor. But the thing about track was, again, when I reached that fork in the road, my brother's an Olympian. Like, I don't want to be, I don't want to follow in his footsteps, which is weird to say now, but then I wanted to be anything not my little brother, my big brother's little brother. Yeah. Like I was the little Bob for the first 16 years of my life. I did not want to be little Bob anymore. I wanted to be there. Carp your own path. Yeah. And that was, that was kind of the niche. And he and I laughed. about it now because
06:35 he was like, what was wrong with being? Well, Bob. I was like, you were perfect. The dude got $1,500 on his SATs and he was an All-American attract. Who wants to follow that? And became a minister. Yeah.
06:51 Who was mom's favorite? I don't want to deal with that. A lot of pressure. I don't want to deal with that. May I might ask the question. He says, D.P., do you miss? the Redskins or do you like the commanders?
07:11 I just met the commanders. I just met the commanders. I loved the Redskins. A lot of my heroes are Redskins. Very few of them are commanders. Does that make sense? If the Huskers decided to go be the bug eaters again, you wouldn't love them any less.
07:40 You just love them differently than your Huskers. because that means every Johnny Rogers played for the Huskers. Well, what if he was now a bug eater? Right? Would you buy a bug eater's Rogers jersey? There's a portion of the population of wood, absolutely. But they're paying tribute to John Riggins. Well, they're paying tribute to the Riggins of the Redskins.
08:02 But they are now selling commanders Riggins' jerseys. And I'm not mad at him, right? Because technically he never played for a team called the commanders, except for it's the same organization. For the people who played for Nebraska when they were buggy, you don't love them any less. You're just willing to say, oh, my goodness, you're buggy.
08:27 Perfect case point. October 30th, I'll be inducted in my high school's Hall of Fame. Okay? Mm-hmm. I am an alumni of Washington Lee High School. I am a Washington Lee General. The school that's inducted me into the Hall of Fame
08:54 is Washington Liberty High School. They're the Washington Liberty Generals. The Hall of Fame at Washington Liberty High School is still the Washington Lee Hall of Fame, Washington Lee Athletic Hall of Fame. We understand the difference. Now, mind you, every picture that I have, have from my time in high school is a hat that says W&L, W-Hifin-L, and a jersey that says
09:30 generals. I do not have any jersey or T-shirt that said Washington Lee. They all said W-N-L. Even then, it said W-N-L. There is a huge market going on for Washington Lee, paraphernal. know, you, and apparel, versus Washington Liberty apparel. Current students at my high school love the Washington Liberty. They have a new logo and otherwise.
10:05 The old logo was George Washington and Robert E. Lee, side by side, the generals, side by side, in a coin sort of deal, like knows, you know, the profile. Yeah. the current general logo or mascot is this super buff general. He's almost like a pirate, quite frankly. But he's a general. And he's doing the whole, you know, Jim Beam, you know, foot on a, foot on a barrel sort of deal.
10:40 I was asked what I was going to wear at the Hall of Fame induction. So there's an induction ceremony. dinner reception Friday night. And then on the 31st, you do the whole on the field during the game thing. And I don't know if I can find one of my old jerseys or anybody who can make the jersey the way we had them. And mind you, we didn't have Washington Lee on the jerseys. Matter of fact, we didn't have, I don't think we had generals on the jersey,
11:19 quite frankly. And then here's the transition. My sophomore year, Bach, we looked like the 1960 cowboys. Long sleeves, cotton, right? Patches on the elbow, the full length jersey. That, yeah, not attractive, but it was what they wore. Isn't that, was that a risky decision as far as the choice there in Washington? Listen, Washington loves a debate.
11:59 And so when I say that the theory of three's work, a third of the alumni love the idea of changing the name. A third sunk the ten toes down and held on to the old tradition. A third was just kind of like, I'm a W&L general. How's that? Right? Like W&L general, W&L is WNL. And if you went to the high school, if somebody asked me where I went to school, I went to W&L. It was never a matter of Washington Lee. It was only somebody outside the circle who would ask what WDL stand for.
12:34 And the difference being is that we were the little generals because we were named after Washington and Lee University, who are also the general. So imagine a Washington and Lee University. And then Washington hyphen Lee High School, both generals. As a matter of fact, when that whole thing happened, we were the baby generals. Because the state generals were the university. Then it became about the stars. And then it became about the G, like the Packers type G, but in the Cowboys' Colors' Colors,
13:10 there was the run where we had the Cowboy, we had the Star in the Helmpe. The gray helmet with the blue star. Sound familiar? Yeah. Right? And that we wore it. So if you took old 60s cowboy uniforms, that's what our early 70s uniforms looked like. Then in 1978, we went to blue jerseys with the white stripes.
13:40 So you can imagine cowboys with just blue jerseys with white numbers and the white stripes. Right? Then the following year, we went with the blue jerseys. with the gray numbers, white numbers, but gray and white stripes. So you think cowboys, which is why I quite frankly, I have issue with our our jerseys because we look like cowboys. So how often during your career there did they switch to jersey? That seems like a lot.
14:15 Well, it does seem like a lot, but because it was a back then. Well, but think, okay, so in baseball, we were wearing. cotton jerseys. And then we were wearing polyester jerseys. And then we realized that like the Huskers, mesh jerseys were way more comfortable with the
14:33 sleeves under them. So you just, so we went from cotton to nylon-ish polyester to mesh-ish. So think Cowboys mesh-ish, the Dorset era, right? Early
14:49 stallback, solid, jersey to the mesh. Think Husker Johnny Rogers to the midriff cutoff era which was a whole era
15:05 to the longslee traditional Husker jerseys then to the you know the the greatest show on turf mesh it's all the same era and how people were kind of maneuvering
15:19 in the space if you, so I'm an authentic jersey guy. If you go back and watch the Redskins first Super Bowl in the 70s, those are silk screen jerseys. But when people make authentic, air quote, jerseys now for that era, they don't. They make polyester jerseys. But if you go to the Thysman era,
15:48 originally they were polyester, they went to mesh because the hogs like the advantage, it was tougher to grab the mesh than it was the polyester. Then if you go forward to the Buffalo Super Bowl Redskins, they went back to the polyester and the stitch number. Nebraska went through it. Some of its money, right?
16:14 Because quite frankly, you sell what you sell. I would dare to say this, that if I went to commanders game this Sunday at home in D.C. That there would be a third of the people will have red skin jerseys on.
16:34 Third of the people will have commanders jersey on. And a third of people will have Washington and the logo. Just the W. From the Washington football team. Well, no. Well, the commander's
16:54 logo is the W. Yeah. Like on the side of the helmet, it's the W. Now, there's some discussion that the next iteration is going to be a combination tribute, the W, with a spear through the W, paying homage, positive homage, to Native Americans. Don't know how it's going to go.
17:25 Again, but it's kind of the thing. So how this week, Nebraska is going to have the blackout and they had a new kind of color accommodation. The third of the people are going to wear that black and they're going to roll with it. Third of people are going to wear a husker black, but it's going to be old, like traditional black. The third of people are just going to wear black. Because on game day, we wear red, right? Yeah.
17:52 Except we don't this Saturday. How much money did they make on selling black items, the new black version of the Husker uniform? How much money do you think they make? Yeah, it is a whole number. Yeah. So why would you leave that money on the table? Right? If people are going to buy it, give them something to buy.
18:13 If people want to buy it, give them something to buy. You had a whole new freshman class. You think those 30,000 kids want something Husker to wear? Oh, yeah. You think they're going to honor this, what they wore in weeks one through five versus what they wear this week? They're going to black out, right? Where do you go? You go to rally house and you,
18:36 find your Husker black and you buy something to wear. You got to belong, right? Simple. Yeah. Yeah. Money. Cream, Bach, cream. Cash rules, everything around me.
18:50 Dollar, dollar bill. Y'all. Stephen likes to tear away jerseys. Yeah, I'm a member of that club. I still think that if they want to make the most money to fans, if they sell those, those terraway jerseys, they would make a ton of money. if they sell the mesh jerseys. So give me the Irvine Friar, Mike Rosier, mesh jersey.
19:13 Give me those. Even whether you put names on the back of them or not, give me those with whatever bowl game patch they were wearing. Give me that. I'd wear those every day with a hoodie or on the top of it or sleeves or whatever you want to wear. Yeah? Yeah. Fair?
19:29 I like it. Yeah. That, that's, that's easy, right? to sit in and go, okay. Husker Sto says, I'm still mad at John Regans. Be mad at Don McNeil, be mad at Arnsparger for the defensive play call. Because Washington knew
19:48 what the killer bees' tendencies were. Fourth and one, they went over to the sideline to act like they didn't know what they were going to call, but the entire Washington roster knew what they were going to call. The entire Washington roster knew what they were going to call. Let me find it. Let me find it. Because NFL films did a great job of capturing it.
20:31 And they have Joe Thaisman mic up. And he goes, all right, boys, gentlemen, 70 chip. And then most Redkin fans can, and mimic Joe Thaisman's cadence at the line of scrimmage. That's how much that play was right. Yeah, pretty amazing. And they put, one, you had, I want to say it was Kim Boat camper who slipped
21:08 because they had motion. They sent Clint Didier in motion, and he was mirroring Didier. And in the mirror, Didier pivoted and reversed his motion. motion and the linebacker from Miami slipped. So he was late to the party. Well, even on time of the party, he's still going to lose to Clint Didier.
21:29 But greater option, he now freed up Didier to get to the next level, make a touch, and then get up to the next level and keep the safety off of Wiggins. But why, Bach, you're playing the Redskins in 83. It's fourth and one. We're not guessing, are we? I wouldn't think so. In the greatest postseason run by running back, he's having it.
21:59 Who's getting the ball? Gotta believe it's Riggins. Got to believe it's Riggins. Orange Barker, you owe Miami fans better. DC fans, we appreciate you. Thank you, kind, sir. All right, more one-on-one. We'll come back.
22:15 Back to one-on-one with D. Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation, on 93-7 the ticket. Right, 70 chip. What's coming, Bob? Johnny. This is, think of how glorious that must have been
22:50 in that huddle. He goes to the side of his fourth one on Super Bowl. You're down, but you got the ball. And you've got a running back on a heater, power back on a heater. And I think, as much as I think of the Redskins, and I've said this before, that I have parallel universes in which Nebraska was good
23:12 and Washington and Redskins were good. And for the same reasons, right? Same reasons. Electric players, power players, great quarterback leadership, and just top-level, top-tier coaching, right? Defensive stalwarts who were strong, good up the middle on both sides of the ball, simplicity. That to think that those 70s and 80s and 90s
23:35 Husker teams, they had a 70 chip. They had a 50 gut. Like, they tell the stories in one of those great NFL, you know, Super Bowl seasons. They talk about the playoff game against Dallas where Washington is trying to put away the game. And they get out there, they get the huddle, and Joe Gibson's in the play, and Joe Dismund looks at his lineman, and then he goes, 50 gut. 50 gut.
24:04 And this is the Randy White defense, Bob Brutnik, poor guy, playing middle linebacker, just left out there to just take a beating. 50 gut, five yards, first down. Check a down. They send a play in. Rush Grimm steps up, 50 gut. Sir Gibbs goes, okay, boys, 50 gut. They run 50 gut first out.
24:29 Get back in the huddle, Joe Gibbs is sending. Rush Grim stands at the line of scrimmage and yells at Joe Gubbs. 50 gut Joe The Eisenman calls 50 gut he puts his hand in the derby he says Randy White 50 gut
24:45 do something about it 50 gut Bach imagine the Huskers back in the Jerry Taggy divany days of knowing what they were going to call in those moments
25:02 think of of the greatest strong turf, and we still ask the question. You know, the call in the end zone. Call what you would have called because you've been fine if you run the option, right? Right? You run a dive.
25:18 You got some dudes. Those linemen, you think the linemen will let you down? Probably not. They're not going to take a loss on the biggest play in history. They wouldn't have done it. Okay.
25:28 94, 95, 97. But there's a play. There's a play. When they got in the huddle, you think that the University of Miami is a university of Tennessee, University of Florida, as they stood across from those offenses in a critical moment, there wasn't a play that those quarterbacks walked in the huddle and said, okay, boys, and before he said it, they knew what they were going to run.
25:50 It was the statement play of a statement program. I would love that. We need to ask the Hall of Famers what that play was. Right? Like, what was that play? What was the play that you called in the moment to let everybody know what Nebraska was, who Nebraska was, and where you stood when it came to them? Because quite frankly, that play was a play that was a play of dominance.
26:20 They knew that quite frankly that you could know this play was coming and do nothing about it. And we were going to do it in high repetition because it's the play that we ran the most. It's the play that we ran the best. It's the play that allowed us to put our forearm in your chest or a stiff arm on your helmet or our foot on your throat. It would just bring goosebumps. Just the idea I played for Bach, Thaisman, running to the sideline and coming back in the huddle and it has his call in the huddle. And I got goosebumps.
27:03 I was like, ah, ha, ha, ha. And then it had the Redskins, play-by-play call, radio call, and then it had the, uh, the NBC Dick and Bird call. Goosemuffs. I just got a text from Todd Euler will be joining us on Bachin the Black shirt. Yes. The text says,
27:24 I write 44 counteroff. There it is. There it is. Listen, I'm giving away a million dollar idea, but put that on a T-shirt. Put that on a T-shirt. Listen, I saw the fumble rusky shirts.
27:40 Love it. And there's tons of things you can say. Grown men wear, grown man football and just put that play on it. National championships were built on that play. Wouldn't you wear that shirt? That would be pretty cool. Wouldn't you wear that shirt? Billion
28:03 you're welcome. Perch, merch, you're welcome. You're welcome. Put that on a shirt. Put that on a shirt. I would wear the shirt. Read it again. Read the play, Bob. I write 44 counteroffice. What does that shirt mean? What does that play mean to you, well it's the similar kind of stories that you that you said before of you know offensive linemen going and
28:33 I've heard it before here in husker land is going up to the line and said this is what we're running telling the defensive linemen this is what we're running can't stop it can't stop it try and stop okay boys here's the play try and stop it try and stop us Nebraska football Husker football. You know, he's another shirt. Pipeline strong. How strong are you? A pipeline strong.
29:20 Pipeline strong, back. What do you think? Yeah. So, we sell some shirts here at the ticket. Might have to have a few more made up. Right? Right? Jake, Solenton, Elizabeth Sorensen is pregnant.
29:33 You know what, you know, the turt? You know what it would say? Hmm. Husker baby inside. We build fullbacks. That's not on the current run. Right. Wouldn't that be amazing?
29:49 Wouldn't that be a great shirt? Oh, yeah. Like on the shirt, you know, Husker baby pending. Fullback coming. All right. Got a pipeline baby here.
30:06 Bach, we're selling the shirts, right? We're selling the shirt. I think so. That would be amazing. What, what, I mean, do we have a play? Is there currently a play that exists? This is a, this is a five and O Husker football team. What play goes on the shirt for this year's for 2026 Nebraska football?
30:37 Some would say that the Calandria jumping, hurdling the defender. Yeah. Is the story of the year? What image is it, is it rule? Is it Jaurul? and the fact that we're not calling him Jarl rule is a fail. It is a. Bac.
30:57 How are we not called? How are we not used that? Hey, I'm a big Jail rule fan. How are we not? He had that beef with 50 cent. There might be too many 50 cent fans around here. How many Jarl jerseys would you buy? But he had some home runs.
31:13 He had some bangers, man. What are we doing? How is he not Jail? We might have to tell him who Jarl rule is. he's pretty young. He better know. I praise dad probably. Yeah. Those shirts. We need, we need Jarl. We have to come up with the song that goes with it.
31:32 Which, which song do we want? What lyric? What Jow rule lyric do we need with for the Jail rule shirts? Like I would buy. I would buy. Oh, maybe just living it up. Living it. That's the song. Yeah. Anytime he scores, we play Jow rule. Anytime Jail rules. Texas says everyone I know calls him Jarl.
32:00 I've never, Bokka, have you heard anybody call him Jarlal. I have not. I have not heard anybody call him Jarlal. But that's a song that needs to be played. That's the song that needs to be played. Every time he scores, yeah. Every time he scores.
32:16 What do we do it? We can't play it to murder. We could if he runs over somebody. Right? He trucks somebody. Murder. I know it's Jay, Jay-Lo's song, but I'm real. It's Jarl.
32:34 Yeah. Everybody he knows, calls him Jarlal. What circle are we running in? I've never heard. Nobody here. I've never heard anybody here do it. Oh, this is somebody in this text. Here's the thing, I don't know if the text was recognize this.
32:58 That murder. Hark farmer, Byron, that's it. Every time he trucked somebody, you play murder. Because I don't know that many people. That's what I was wondering. That's what I was wondering. I was like, come on, man. I think that should be the next thing.
33:18 They probably wouldn't be approved. If every time he trucked somebody, why not? It's a good play. The crowd's going to be cheering. But he runs over, fourth and one, he runs over Indiana Hoosia. The whole crowd's murder. I'm willing.
33:45 I'm willing. But yeah, he's Jowoo. It's done. I'm sorry. It's done, Bach. Am I wrong? I, I'm on board. I like Jail Rule 26.
34:01 Let's go. Let's go. The Jirul campaign. It starts now. It's a big week. Maybe they should call. Who, hey, have they announced who's going to be the guest? Are they doing a guest like a guest?
34:16 I don't know. I can track it and look at their socials. Let's check out and see what it is. Who would you want to come here for Big Noon? Who would you want? Probably Bud Crawford. Bud. Well, we know Larry the cable guy's coming.
34:33 Yeah. He's in town. Everybody who, okay, text line. You're all invited to come hang out with the ticket with Grant, Jason. Harrison, the whole ticket crew, and Larry the cable guy Friday, four to six. Four to six. Are they up for it? Are they up for it?
34:55 Come on through. Personal invite. You got it. Close out 101 to get y'all said up for Bach in the black shirt. Back to one-on-one with D.P. Sponsored by the downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket. You better sing. all of you
35:33 there's an interesting suggestion yeah the Dana Alton thing I let it cry I don't need to be in the first wave of conversation when it comes
35:52 in that sort of thing that's just me there'll be plenty of conversation about it so do what you do gee what you do so they got
36:02 G low in trouble with Erstad oh okay okay there's a real thing right there's a reason why some of the some of the lyrics just don't work rock i understand uh four baseball playoff games today starting at three o'clock four games all the way through the evening
36:23 um listen the series have been pretty good so far uh all for post game post post season baseball i do love the urgency i do love the urgency of every pitch mattering every bit uh every decision mattering um And then quite fascinated by a number of major league players that panic, still panic in situation. Just do what you've done your whole life. Don't do anything extra. All the loose extra throws, I never understand. Pitching decisions, you know, trying to figure out who gets used, who would the best for the situation. And then players standing up and having a moment.
37:04 I love postseason baseball. I do. I really love postseason baseball. Been good for all four series. today. 37:55 they're going to have to have the biggest game for Nebraska to beat Indiana. So that's we're going to look for. And matchups all over the field. It's going to be very interesting to kind of break that down. It's going to be an interesting couple of back. Yeah. I'm looking forward to it. I'll grab a coffee and I'll suck.
