Who is on your Mount Rushmore of Sports Broadcasters?: October 14th, 12:25pm
00:01Back to one-on-one with D.P.Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket. We've taken the gun down the rabbit hole as we're prone to do.And the Mount Rushmore of sports broadcaster, sports education, sports shows, the presentation of sports, that I feel bad for the younger generation that they don't understand.that they don't have the nuance that the old heads do about the games that are played and whythe data doesn't matter nearly as much as as folks were there I understand that why the databecame so important.
00:56Locke, you know why the data, their studies? You know why the data became important?Because people who could not play the game wanted to have impact on the game. That's how that happened.it used to be let me ask somebody who knows what what the game is about and the people were being excludedthe masses were being excluded what do you mean so people said well listen if i if i make a point to getinto the numbers of this thing then i can have a say so because i can make the numbers say whatever wewant and this is why okay uh here's where we are on third down here's where we are in third and six
01:34here's where we are in third and four here's where we are on third and two against zone here's where we areagainst third and two against man cover two. Here's where we are third and seven with two tight ends. Here's where we are.But all of that. But the old heads will tell you we can look at a thing because you've seen the moviemore often than not. You've seen the story.
01:59You've seen the layout. And you've had to have these discussions with yourself along the way.Texarkers and in this on November 23rd.This is a great text, by the way.November 23rd, the day after President Kennedy was shot, Bob Zinner,a broadcaster for K-I-N in Lincoln and KOLN TV,announced the Nebraska Oklahoma game simultaneously on both radio and TV,Nebraska won 29 to 20 to win Nebraska's first Big A title.
02:28And here's the thing on my Mount Rushmore,my personal route to Mount Rushmore,it is the guy had Rod Hundley.Hodrod Huntley was one of the first national NBA broadcasters. But Hodrod Huntley was the first and probably best simulcaster.Simulcaster.And that Hodrod Huntley perfected giving a radio call and a TV call at the same time.Without dumbing down either call.
03:06giving you everything that you could not see on radioand giving value to everything you could see with the TVwithout overdoing it and dumbing it down.If you want to go back and watch an elite pro,and he went on to become the jazz, this is why the Utah Jazz had the same radio and broadcast call for decades.Because Hot Rod Huntley could do both. And then they added Ron Boo,
03:37Omaha native, Ron Boone, to the call. And it was Hot Run Huntley and Ron Boone for decades in Utah, giving the radio and television simulcast. And there was a lot of that.So I'm a big fan of it.As a matter of fact, my basketball and football minor leagueplay-by-play call is the simulcast version, because I think it's best.
04:02I think that when I call a radio game, that when you go back and sync the video to it,it looks as though I'm calling it to the video, not in spite of it.There's a story I told to the UNLF kids Friday, as a matter of fact, that with the supernovas, the original call was for the ticket to be the radio call.So we gave a radio call,
04:33and then we gave a call that would sync with streamingso that anybody that was just video in the game could sync our mic by play-by-play call to it,and it would not seem out of place.Well, that's what happened later in the year when they got to the final four in the championships. That the powers of B said, okay, listen, can we sync your call to the video?Yes, you can't.And if no one told you that they weren't done together, you wouldn't know it.But the ability to do that, Keith Jackson was exceptional at it.
05:05He's another one that falls in that.Kurt Gowdy was pretty brilliant at it.What's the Buck? The Elder Buck. The Elder Buck and the Elder Kerry broadcasters.Jack Buck.Jack Buck was exceptional at a simulcast.Skip Carey was brilliant at the simulcast.
05:39But those are the people that, again, you really had to kind of carry yourself.Vern Lundquist, actually great poll, John and Cortland. He says his Mount Rush.He won't, here's what is missing today. And when Ali and Fraser or Ali would have his big fights, he and Kosovo would sit down. And they would do an interview. And then you'd get to, they would pre-record it, and then you get to see it on Wild World of Sports on Saturday afternoon.we don't do wild world of sports anymore and i think it's a shame
06:11i think it's a shame that wild world of sports doesn't go on anywayeven with all the coverage and stream i think wild world of sports should still happensaturdays and sundays i miss it i really do miss iti promise you i miss that thing um speed limit that's some pretty cool stuffwhat do you got going on that that's pretty good uh harry harry carry was was cubs and cardsSkip was the Braves. But that's what I think. So amongst them, and then younger Skip, right?
06:44The Kerry family, the Buck family, those were all three-generation broadcast families. And there are some people who don't like that, quite frankly.Mailman says, Keith Jackson, Howard Kosel, John Madden, and Al Michaels. You're not, and here's the thing with all of this, you wouldn't be wrong.Kurt Gowdy is underrated in my mind. And most of those people were good at all sports, not any sport, not just a sport. The ability to call boxing at the same level that you call football, certainly would play it with a bill and business as I grew up in Omaha with the Omaha World Herald.
07:27I would read the sports section every day at breakfast.Yeah, there's a whole generation of young people and old heads. As a matter of fact, my grandfather was the same way, that would,I mean, when you got the morning paper, you look at the headline on the front page, but you probably knew that. What you wanted to find out is if you went to bed early, what happened in sports overnight. And then, hey, Bach, you want the disappointment of it all that early press East Coastnewspapers didn't have, always have the scores of the West Coast games in it.
08:04Oh, yeah.Oh! Nothing sets it off.Like, oh, boy.So then you would get the late edition on purpose. So you would wait until after school or after work and get the late editionbecause that would have the scores in the full up-to-date stats.Yeah, pretty cool stuff.Texer says this.
08:27D.P. is on my Mount Mushroomer, incredible content every time.Bless your heart.I'll give you a T-shirt for that text. That's pretty amazing.Yeah, that's very cool.Windows says, I don't watch a lot of baseball, but love listening to Groer Shop,do play-by-play on a baseball game.
08:44That's just it.Most of the previous generation of sportscasterscould call any sport because you had to,Bach, that's how you got in the game.If you couldn't call everything,a program director wasn't going to hire you.You weren't going to just produce. You had to be able to produce.
09:04news and host and call games. That's how you got in the business. That's how you got a job.I know that's how I got work.If I could call everything, I wouldn't have got high by anybody. So, and then I can specialize based on the season, the job, the company, etc.So second break coming up, Bach, you have a read for insomniac cookies, kind of, sir, if you would, and then take us to break.
