This is Five Live Boxing. Well, good evening and welcome to Five Live Boxing as we delve into what's being built as the biggest fight in British boxing history.
00:56 It's taken a decade to get here and in that time it's been on, it's been off again and again. Now, finally, we have a date, we have the venue, and tonight we've had the press conference and for the first time ever the face-off. Yes, we're one step closer to Tyson Fury against Anthony Joshua and over the next hour. We'll look at just why it's taken so long to get this mega fight over the line. We'll hear from both men look at where they are in their careers and assess how they match up ahead of this huge clash in Cardiff on December the 11th. I'm Stacey Copeland and this is five.
01:31 live boxing. And joining me, the best possible duo to guide us through it all. In Steve Bunce and former WBO Super Featherweight World Champion, Barry Jones, who between them combined almost make a modern day heavyweight, but perhaps not quite. I'm happy with that. You should be. You should be happier than Barry. 90% Steve.
01:59 I've done you a favour there, Buncie. You certainly have, Gil. You can back me later. The first question is then, and hopefully it's one that's been clarified this evening, Buncey, is this fight going to happen? Well, you mentioned in your intro there, on, off, and I would then add on to that. So on, off, and then on again. That's just this week.
02:19 It has been on and off. It first was formally arranged back in on June the 10th of 2020, and then it was 2021, 22, 23. And on April 27th of this year, it was signed and sealed. We had a fight. We could put our feet up. We could get a cigar going. If we liked a cigar, we could put our... We could have a pipe.
02:39 We could relax. It was done and dust. Then it fell out of bed. Then it fell into bed. Then it fell out of bed. They come face to face today. And the big story, Stace, is that you obviously expecting Barry and me to go, Stace, you should have been there.
02:51 It was unbelievable. There was a 32 minute loving. A 32 minute loving. And you know what? I'm quite happy with that because this fight sells itself. It does. We'll get to that in just a moment. It's really interesting.
03:04 interesting what we saw at the press conference. Barry, was there ever a point when you thought the fight genuinely wouldn't happen? And Bunsey, I know that you spoke to Barry and then Richard Woodhull with it about 36 hours of one other and everything, the whole picture had changed. So Barry, presumably, you've never been really certain. No, well, you can be because they've cried Wolf so many times before where we thought we were going to get the biggest fight in British boxing history and then they let us down. but this one seemed real. When Cardiff was announced, it seemed real. And then all of a sudden, there we go, there you go,
03:39 and you just get to a point where you almost don't care, but you do care deep down, like even now of the fight, the fight doesn't have the same gravitas as it had, you know, maybe five, six years ago. But it's still super exciting. When they went face to face, the way in. When they walked out on the stage, Beau, yeah.
03:56 It's just the walking out on the stage. You already got, you know, some principal people on the stage. Frank Warren's there. The presenter from America's there. Eddie Hearn's there. And then suddenly they came out. There's only about 1,000 people inside this brilliant new arena that we've found today. And you could really sense it.
04:11 And Barry and I did that thing that you and I did in Croke Park, where when Katie Taylor is making a way to the ring, when those two guys came on the stage, you look at each other and you go, yeah, this is good. I'm loving this. Well, the thing is, it's not so much because of where they are in their careers. No, it's who they are and what they've done. And, you know, you have to sit back and think, if they both retired tomorrow, you would say,
04:31 Hall of Fame careers. I mean, what they've done, not just for the British boxing or British sports, you can argue, but just what they've done for that division alone. I mean, with the lack of a real
04:43 top-class American heavyweight except for DeAndi Wilder, the division seemed to suffer quite a lot. And Anthony Joshua took it on his back by himself. Absolutely. Well said.
04:54 And he did. He took on his back and he made, and it was dominated by Eastern Europeans quite often for such a long time. And the critical brothers certainly, you know, had that certainly Vladimir
05:02 and he took over and he was the poster boy for boxing not just British boxing world boxing I would say we forget this don't we yeah we do too easily we forget this Barry and then whilst that was going on
05:13 Josh Tyson feud also goes to Germany and beats the guy who we just spoke about who couldn't be beat before that of course and then he had these problems but he comes back from what a great story that was coming back from the problems he had to you know to get himself in
05:25 Lose his seven stone but to get himself right mentally was amazing and come back and the performance the three performances I would argue against Deonté Wilder were just, well, no, maybe one of the best trilogies in the headway division of scene, one of them.
05:39 It was amazing, and just like, and he saw the Brit in America, he took over America, and very few Brits have done that, and he took it by storm, and they all fell in love with him, so those two combined are pretty much, you know, along with Canello, for the last 10 years, of drag boxing
05:55 into the mainstream. And that comeback was something else. I mean, I was training as a pro in Ricky Hatton's at that time and that's where Tyson Fury came to train with Ben in those first early days and it was just none of us really knew what to expect and honestly watching
06:11 his personality on show as it comes out fully colourful in the gym and you know Big John Fiori was in there as well and seeing his antics inspiring and you could tell he was back he'd got the life back in him and that was pretty tremendous a bunch of the risk
06:28 Stay let me ask you a question states and sticking with that point there. When you're in there, you know, you're preparing to go and fight in Africa against all lords and win a Commonwealth title or you're just fresh from that fight. And he walks through the door and he's 26 and a half stone. He's got an entourage and they're all joking and laughing. There's Ben Davison there who looks about 12 years of age.
06:48 In your heart of hearts at that point, 2016 or 2017 or wherever it was, did you imagine he'd even get back in the ring, let alone win world titles and let alone about to be going into the biggest ever fight in British boxing history. In your heart of heart, Stacey. No fibbing, no fibbing. Well, first of all, I had to get over the first time I'd seen someone sparring the boxer shorts, bunsey,
07:07 because I certainly was not used to that. You got to get into Wales more often. I'm just going to move on from this swiftly. But yeah, do you know, you could see in him what it meant to him. And if I hadn't seen him in the gym, then, yeah, maybe there would be. And there's always going to be questions, aren't the fellas after you've been out for so long,
07:29 and given what he'd been through. Even yourself, you don't really know till you're in there. But what I can say is that you could see that belief coming back and that that will to live that it lost, you know, that joy that it had lost that reason to be. And that was back and that was the Tyson Fury that we knew. And it was just an incredible thing to watch happen and a journey to watch happen progressively in our gym.
07:53 We were really fortunate to see one of the best fighters, you know, on the planet. Players trade every single day. It was something special. But there is something I want you to explain and clarify for us because one of the issues that changed things within that 50-hour period last week between you and talking to Barry and Ritchie was Dana White. Can you explain to us what the issue has been here and what happened today at the press conference?
08:19 Because as far as I'm aware, he wasn't there. No, Dana White wasn't there. And he said yesterday in Las Vegas, Dana White is the man that breathed life and help the UFC survive and then turn the UFC into one of the biggest sporting operations in the world, not just inside sports where you have, make contact. I refuse to use the word combat.
08:40 So he turned the UFC into a giant, you know, a billion, billion dollar business. And he, you know, and he's made his money from it. And then what happened then is that he eventually gets into boxing. He always wanted to be a boxing promoter. He was a boxing promoter 25 years ago, but very low-key in Boston. And he sets up an organisation and eventually, that organisation gets the backing of Turkey Alashiku, of course, who works very closely with Frank Warren,
09:02 and works very closely with Eddie Hearn. He's the guy from Saudi Arabia who's been the financier, basically, the last three and a half years of boxing. And so he sets up a company called Zufa, and it manages to sign on February 20th, one of Eddie Hearn's major stars, Conner Ben. So that heats up a rivalry that exists between all promoters, and that rivalry turns particularly venomous.
09:24 And then Eddie Hearn gets wind that Dana White, who keeps holding press conferences saying, I'm going to be involved in this fight. I'm going to be the promoter of this fight. This fight's going to be a take place in New York. And of course, Eddie says, no, the contract that Anthony Joshua has states that a fight has to take place here in the UK.
09:42 And he also said that Dana White mustn't be involved. That may not actually be Dana White mustn't be involved. It might be the Dana White's company called ZUFA, ZU-F-A, that they can't be involved. And so when it was officially announced, Thursday by Netflix. The people who are showing this, so if you have Netflix,
10:01 you can watch this for no extra money. The company that is showing it, they put out a press release, and there was a great quote from Turkey Alashay, talking about how great this is for boxing and British boxing. And then, and then there was a quote from Dana White. Eddie really wasn't very happy. He spoke in very straightforward, earthy terms,
10:20 to lots of people. And that's when the fight suddenly collapsed, having officially been on. However, Eddie did reveal to me, tonight, and I'm not sure if this is an exclusive, but I'll claim it as an exclusive. He did say tonight that he's not ruling out Dana White now somehow being involved. As long as Dana White's involvement, and it wouldn't be as the promoter, it would be involved in some way.
10:43 If Dana White is involved in any way, shape or form, as long as it's, quote, unquote, beneficial to Anthony Joshua, then I can see that happening. And he said, I'm going to ask Turkey Alashake if I can sit down with Dana White and Turkey Alashake, sit down face to face and just have a look. Because what Eddie said is, I don't want three months of he said, she said, he said, she said,
11:03 because we've had too much of the he said, she said, Dana says one thing. Eddie, what did you say about this? It's just too much. Let's just get this fight on. And I think that was a bit of a, you know, a bit of maturity for Medi-Dess. And you know what?
11:14 If Turkey out of shake wants Dana White involved, let's sit down and let's find a way to have him involved. He won't be as the promoter, but hey-ho. Maybe it was a real... Pardon? It's nonsense. I mean, I'm not saying he shouldn't be involved, but why should you? I mean, it's almost irrelevant.
11:30 You don't need another promoter to help himself. Barry, you don't. Turkey Alishake is pulling the strings. It's his money. And if he wants Dana involved, instead of parachuted him into a quasi-fake role as a promoter, if he can just parachute him in as an advisor. Yeah, but it's still not. Okay, isn't it?
11:47 No, no. Well, we care because without Turkey's money, we wouldn't have to fight. So, therefore, we've got to do what Turkey bids. That's why. Of course it's rubbish, but he's got to play the game. I know we need the money for the fight to happen. All that's obviously understand about. The whole thing about, like, he has to be involved.
12:03 Nobody, except for the... We heard the booze tonight. Except for those guys. Nobody else cares. When Turkey Alashake mentioned that the press governments today, there's about 1,000 people there states, but they were noisy. When Turkey Alashake meant, he said, I'd like to thank him, he mentioned Eddie Hurd,
12:16 and he mentioned X, Y, and Z. Then when he mentioned, the moment he said Dana White, the place just erupted into booze. No one wants Dana White. involved other than the man who's making the fight possible. And sometimes the boss man, the man with the biggest kitty in boxing, he is the one who calls the shot. It's almost one of those things about your own family, isn't it?
12:36 Where you can call them, but other people can't. And it's kind of that with the British boxing community, that we can say things ourselves. But if somebody from the outside comes in, we don't quite like it, hence perhaps why people were doing. But Barry's absolutely right. Dana White's been a promoter for six months of boxing or seven months, eight months of boxing.
12:55 He's been a brilliantly successful UFC guy, okay? And he's never promoted a fight anywhere near this before. He showed at the copper box in London at about 1,500 people just last week. You know, there is no reason why he should be involved. He's not involved with Tyson Fury, although he did take Tyson Fury to the White House back in June when Donald Trump had that UFC event on his lawn.
13:20 He did take Tyson Fury to that. Tyson Fury said, I'd love Dana White to be involved. But Dana White really has no role, no legitimate role I can see, other than the fact that he's good friends with Turkey Alashake, Turkey Alashake's bankrolling it, and Turkey Alashake wants him involved. Remember, Stace, as much as we love this sport,
13:38 it is maddening, and it doesn't follow a straight trajectory. Just put his name on the poster. I mean, because Eddie Hurtt, a match who don't need any help. They're probably some of the biggest fights in the country, and they can do it, and especially Anthony Joshua. They know what they're doing with him. And Frank Warren's involved as well, man. I mean, and I'm sure, and Dana White is done in another sport,
13:56 so they all know what to promote. Yes. I mean, they don't need each other's help. Absolutely. And they don't need each other's financial help either. Like maybe before in other situations, you might need a collaboration for the, for to get the money to get it to sell. The money's there.
14:10 But they don't need. So just let him out. Let's just focus on the fights, on the fighters. That clears that up. No. No, so the thing is, one thing that's easier to talk about is who was at the press conference. and namely the fighters themselves.
14:25 Now, Barry, we've seen all sorts of different versions of these two. We've had Fury flying in dressed as Batman before jumping over the tables. We've had AJ giving one word answers and having that mean sort of streak about him. And then we've seen them both being philosophical, being funny and humorous. We've had all sorts. I think these two know that it doesn't particularly matter what happens today, 10 weeks out. You could tell. And as Buncey said, they were quite calm, quite reflective.
14:50 I was listening to it and waiting for something to happen. and it didn't. What did you make of how the two fighters presented themselves in the press conference today? Yeah, it was just two fighters there who have been used to pressure all their careers, have been at the highest level, have been at the forefront for such a long time
15:07 that this is second nature to them. It's almost boring for them, I would say. And even though we were expecting, because they are their arched nemesis, we were expecting some spite. And there was a little bit of a dig from Tyson Fury. At the start over the sparring session, there was quite nasty.
15:23 didn't ignite and I think Anthony Joshua had the bite back and he didn't I think the closer the fight gets we will have that but now this is just an introduction I think and I think so we can read too much into it as you can't ever really I don't think but as the fight gets closer to the
15:38 way in it's close to the night when it gets closer to reality then I think Tyson theory will want to turn the screw on what a lot of people feel still is quite a mentally fragile Anthony Joshua yeah well
15:52 Speaking of Anthony Joshua, we're going to hear from him in just a second. It was last in the ring in July, of course, when he fought Christian Pranger at the Jeddah Superdome in Saudi Arabia. It was, I think it's fair to say, a bizarre fight. It was not quite what anybody expected with Joshua being dropped twice in the first round, and arguably not with massive shots that he might have expected to wobble him. And then, of course, he finished the Albanian in the second round stopping him. On your pod after that fight, Buncey and in subsequent conversations
16:26 that I've heard with former fighters, with coaches, with all sorts of people that has been a lot of concern and genuine concern about what they witnessed that night. Barry, what are your reflections on AJ that night in particular against Pranger?
16:43 Well, first of all, this, this going on reverse. Let's get the positive out of the way. I mean, the finish was fantastic. I mean, that was Prime Joshua, loose, relaxed. accurate with his work and he knew what he was doing. He had one thing on his mind, hit the target, hit it clean.
16:57 That's all he has to do. He has natural power. He doesn't have to force it. That was great. But you can't forget what happened. You can't forget what you saw in that first round. And that was a guy who, he looks, he looks like he's scared, tended to get hit. But it shows in him because he's bouncing two lines, taking so long to get that jab into play.
17:19 He's taking so long to insert himself into the fight. Is that, Barry? Is that from those brutal stoppages is experienced? I just think it's, I think, see, you don't, you know this, your training goes well, but it's not the same intensity. And I think it's, it's inability to see the punches coming. Now, I've got a theory that people say when your chin's gone, no, with wear and tear, I think it's your peripheral vision.
17:41 So you don't, you see down a tunnel and you don't see the punches coming, so it's too late, or you don't see him coming at all. And I think he might be at that stage. I hope not for him, but he might be at that stage. stage where he can still do everything in the gym he's in great condition he's sharp he's fast he's accurate the combinations on the pads are fantastic but
17:59 when it comes to a real fight situation with all the concentration and the focus that it takes in a live fight as you know very well I don't think you can see everything and once the vision goes you're a big tag that you get hit and I think he knows that and I think it exudes from him and against someone like Tyson Fury
18:15 that's a nightmare and so Panga didn't hit him with big shots but it's still a big guy hitting you with If you can't see them, they're free shots, aren't they? Absolutely. The shots you don't see are the ones that hurt you and knock you out. And I think that's the issue with him. I hope I'm wrong.
18:30 But that's my assumption of why he went down so easily and why he was in so much trouble. And there was states. After that fight, there was a bit of an inquiry. You know, it was behind closed doors between different people in the Anthony Joshua business. We were quite harsh, both in comms and in the post-fight pod. I was serious
18:51 I mean I did it with Barry And Barry's point is brilliant about the peripheral vision You know the fact that you're not seeing these punches As Barry quite correctly said They then become free shots But I was really concerned with what I saw It was interesting today To hear a new take from Anthony Joshua
19:07 On what he believes happened that night I tell you what That was a banger of a fight And I'm not like blowing I'm not saying it was like a flawless performance But from an entertainment point of view someone who was up against it, like when someone, when I drop you, yeah,
19:24 my sole aim is to finish the job. Now you're to the ground, man. Nail you and bury you and then put the last bit of dirt on you. Like, that is my mind. So to get dropped in the first 20 seconds and have that guy chasing me around the ring for what's that, two minutes and 40 seconds.
19:40 Yeah, about that. Throwing me, fran, I'm staying in there, smiling. I believe I'm a hard man to beat. Like, he was heavy-handed, but the punches don't really hurt. hurt, it was like, you should never be scared because they're not enough to put me in the coffin. They caused some damage, but I just realized I'm very resilient. And it was like, it was really good the way I managed to turn the tables and come back.
20:03 So this fight was signed on April the 27th. Obviously, you fought in July against Christian Pranger. And I'll talk to you about that in a second. But let's say over the last two months, six or seven weeks, in theory, you know, you're getting your head around. Has it been harder to sort of settle down and start getting your mom? mind on a fight with all of the stuff that's been going on. No, I chilled, ready.
20:22 Stay ready. But the only thing that would have been difficult is if this fight fell through because it was like, where do we go now? From such a high, it was like, what other fight can keep me at that level where there's a lot of anticipation, a lot of momentum? So I was just being patient thinking, oh, if this fight does fall through, it's going to be difficult for me to kind of build something else up to that level. And then luckily, we're still here.
20:43 We're getting this fight going. So my last six, seven weeks have really been the same because nothing. had changed. It was just if this fight didn't go ahead, I think a lot would have changed for me. But as you said, the fight was signed since April. Yeah, 27. So I've been pretty chilled. I've known what my plan was. So yeah, no, I've been all right. I've been good. Did you have to have this fight as part of your career legacy life? Could I have bumped into you in 10 years if this fight hadn't happened? And would we be sitting somewhere, somewhere nice? And you said, you know what? I really regret not fighting Fury. Did you have to have this fight?
21:16 No, no, no, I'm a chill guy. I'm a chill guy. I'm chill. What will be will be when it's done, it's done. There's things that I can say I regret, but there's things I can say I can also live with. I just live with whatever's thrown at me. Everything's perfect. And if it happened, it happened. If it didn't, it didn't.
21:30 I'm honestly, and I wouldn't change it. I'm not someone that's going to change what I say. I'm pretty chilled with the way things have gone. Steve, it's all been a blessing. It's all been good. It's been fun. I'm enjoying it. And it goes back a long way, the blessing.
21:41 Yeah, it goes back a long way. Like, just when my cousin took me to the gym. It's been tough. But I just enjoy it. Give my best. And whoever's in my way, I'll fight and whoever's not in my way. Good luck to him. Were you put under pressure to go to New York?
21:53 Because there was that point in May into June, certainly by the time we got to July, where it was just going to be in New York. Everyone knows it's going to be in New York, except for the two fighters, but were there channels, were you approached, you, you know, were you being asked to go to New York? Yeah, yeah, I was, definitely.
22:11 But it wasn't like I was forced to go to New York, because I had an option and I chose here. So if I was forced, it would have been different because there are powers that be that make decisions, but I was given an option. And I just stuck to what the contract did. I honoured what I put in the contract. And nothing needed to be changed on my end. As I said, I was pretty solid and firm in the decisions I made. When it was presented, it was like, do I have to? You don't have to. But if you do, these are the changes that would make. All right, let's see if you can get and put in. These have been
22:38 agreed. These haven't been agreed. And I still chose the UK. I still said, you know, I've looked at both options and I still believe the UK is better for me. Now, unless there's been some meetings in Turkey Alashakes mansion or palace in Saudi Arabia. I figure you two have only actually ever touched gloves or been close to touching knuckles or shaking hands. The time in 2010 when Tyson Fury showed up at your gym when I did that famous interview on BBC London with him, which is, I listened to it. It's just ridiculous.
23:03 It sounds like it's from another decade. It was, I guess. And the other one was in Marbeah when you bumped into him in the car. So what did you take from your two? And obviously in Totman where you didn't get in the rig where Lennox Lewis applauded you not getting in the ring. What do you take from those brief meetings? It's nice to get some positivity out of Lennox Lewis.
23:21 There's no need for that, AJ. I'm trying to broker a peace deal here. Would you give me a break? Please. I'm doing my best. We can stay on that subject. I'm actually happy about that. Good, good.
23:32 Yeah, we've got a lot of respect for, I don't just look at people as boxes. I look at them as humans first. I don't care what you do. I value you on who you are, and I've got a lot of respect for the man. You know, I've been around him. When I first got into the game,
23:44 I didn't spend time with him sparring. We spent time as humans. And then that just went a bit left. So it's nice to hear some positivity. With Tyson, no, I haven't been around him since. If I'm honest, it's only been those two times that I've been in his presence. And what did I take from it?
23:58 I take more from him what I see on TV than what I do in person, if I'm willing to see. And today will be the day the iron is hot enough to strike again. So we're striking again. Me and Tyson come face to face. Let's see how it goes. Growing businesses deal with, the same problem. Too many tools, too much back and forth and not enough time. Odu helps bring it

Because we know, if we're hearing that you might be working again with Ben Davison, there might still be some people from OU-Sik's team. There will be people from OU-Six team helping, supporting. I'm going to be working with Ben Davidson.
25:51 It's not going to be complicated. I'm not in the business of complications. And I was saying that I've trained with a lot of trainers, but I would also say it from a positive is, who knows more about me than boxing than me? Because I've been with this coach, that coach, this country. Now I've seen so many different styles. So I'm well-versed in boxing.
26:05 That's just the last two months. That's just the last two months. That's just the last two months. That's the truth. I'm just waiting for the aliens to me, so I can see if they do boxing as well. They'll do it well. They'll do it well if they do it.
26:15 You know that, don't you? They'll be doing it. Don't tell me that. You're on the next Branson shuttle. Just very quickly, ding, ding, first round, 80,000 people. They all sit down or they all stand up. What happens?
26:27 First five seconds. I'm going to knock him out. Barry, there's a sense of gratitude today from both. I felt that, wow, this is finally on. This is as huge as we thought. And we're part of it. And from AJ's point of view there,
26:40 talking about inspiring the next generation and getting up for this kind of fight. that all makes sense at this stage of his career, doesn't it? Yeah, but he's already done that. I mean, I talk about when he'd be critical in Wembley and I say, listen to the speech after the fight, it's almost as good as the fight itself and the brilliant fight that was.
26:57 Even I wanted to go to the gym. I didn't, but I wanted to. My mind was there. But, I mean, it was awe-inspiring. I think we had that poster boy right there that night. That was the one for us. It was made. So he's done that already.
27:09 He's had great careers and great things. I mean, but this is the biggest one. This is your arch nemesis, and they will get a bit more tasty, I'm sure, when they meet a few more times. But this is the fight you don't want to lose. You can't lose. I mean, I don't think it tannishes your legacy at all. I don't think it at tennis is their fabulous careers for both.
27:27 But internally for those, Steve, it's the fight you don't want to lose. Mentally, Stace, the loser of this really suffers. They might talk boldly about, you know, afterwards we'll shake hands, we'll be friends, we'll exchange numbers like Usik does with the people that he vanquishes. But the crushing mental blow of losing to a man who you've basically been trading insults with for 10 years, who everybody has a really strong opinion on who will win and who will lose. And the two of them today were, as you say, they were controlled, but you could still sense the atmosphere there.
28:05 I think it's a crushing mental blow for the loser, and that's far worse than having a loss in your record. and I think it goes a lot deeper than that. Maybe a lot deeper than either of them realized just now. It might come to them later in the camp. Can I pick up on something he said about his resilience? And I think a lot of that's what he says. It's right.
28:26 You know, he did, you go hurt early early. He weathered the storm. When he came back, he regrouped and he got the finish in the next round. Perfect. If you're on your way up. Yes. Or if you're on... If that's the Dillion White fight in 2015, this most perfect result, yes.
28:40 No, or if it's of a wall title fight, against the same calib of opposition or if you haven't shown warning signs before. So we have to take all these things into account against who he was up against the opponent, what he was there for, just be honest. Yes. And how it happened so quickly.
28:57 And I mean, so a lot of things he said are right. And you've got to stay with those positive mindsets. He does not to finish a fighter. And he did weather the storm. But a better fighter, a more experienced fighter at the level that he's been boxing at, maybe he wouldn't let him off the hook. Maybe. I'm not saying he made good stuff
29:18 and he's a world-class fighter, but I mean, there are warning signs there and he has to acknowledge that, and I'm sure he does. So what he was saying was right, but in a different stage of his career, if he was 5-0 and he did that, you go, well, you know, be fair. That's what he needed, you'd say. You'd say, that was great learning fight.
29:34 Part of the development, yeah, absolutely. You were talking about that in commentary during the fight barrier as well, just questioning what Prenge was doing. And as you say, another fighter may have jumped on that. But we've heard from Joshua. We're going to hear now from Fury, who's also been speaking to Buncey about whether there was a point where he thought the fight was in doubt.
29:52 There wasn't one point. It was about 50 of them. I guess phone called about four days ago from the top saying, listen, you need to go do a video and rip right into them properly. This is from Turkey Al-A-Shake. I'm not going to mention any names. But from the top, this has got to be done immediately because they're trying to pull out this fight anywhere they can.
30:09 Does that surprise you can see? in how many years, 20, 20, 21, 22, 23 when it was made. Did it surprise you had it right up until last week, four days ago, 10 days ago? Right up until two days ago when I fought, flew, this wasn't happening. Even when you were flying in, you thought it wouldn't happen? Just the day before I was flying it wasn't happening. Could you have retired, finished without having this fight? Could you have done it?
30:31 100%. Would it have sat easy with you? Yeah, of course it would have done. However, it's like icing on the cake of a career, isn't it? I had to go out here and knock this bum out and then go out and get vengeance on my man over there, Mr Rabbit. That's what I want. I ain't going out as a loser.
30:46 No way. Not a fucking bribe, I was undefeated for 17 years. I know so. So, yeah, I'm definitely not going out as a loser. I'm going to batter this bum up and down this ring as an absolute warm up and I'm going to get the rabbit back in USA. So as what's happened inspired you slightly more?
31:02 100%. Fired you up? Fired me right up. And what's your understanding of what their problem was? Or was it a multitude of things? I think they've got a multitude of problems. There's always a problem. Look, when you get the financial sector out the way,
31:17 it should be downhill from there. It's always usually the money, isn't it, really? We're professional fights. But that was done on April to 27. That was, I'm not mistaken. Then they needed more time because I had me fight. They obviously thought, oh, he's still all right after 16 months out of the ring. We want another warm up.
31:31 So then the warm up had to happen, and that put the date back. And then the date got changed about four times and four different venues and locations, on to which I said yes to all of them. And then it was like, we want this, we want that, we don't want this person involved, we don't want that person involved.
31:49 It's mainly a battle of egos between people who have got nothing to do with the boxing rink, just people outside of it. And Joshua's sort of like a puppet, so he does as he's told, he just leaves Eddie do everything. And for God's sake, man,
32:01 he's 37-year-old. Have a voice in the biggest fight of your life and step up to the plate, put your foot down. You were looking at it. Miami as a training camp or you were or could that's when it looked like it was going to New York and you had no problem with New York did you no so originally I wanted to fight anywhere it didn't matter to me yeah like I've said always Croke Park if possible anywhere but let's just do
32:21 it I don't care where the fight I don't care if it was in Watford Coliseum I don't care it doesn't matter to me but Croke Park would have been unbelievable on the Guinness for the weekend imagine that yeah beautiful anyway that agreed to Ireland and then they said right would you go to England I said no problem then they said would you you go to Las Vegas? I said, no problem. Then they said, would you go to New York? I said, no problem. They said, right, we're going to do it back in England now. I said, okay. Right now, back in New York, it changed about four or five times.
32:47 I was like, just call me when it's done. I'm not interested in all of it. And then finally, there was off and an hour in about Wembley at two in the morning and outside in December 11th and all that. So we suggested Cardiff with a roof sliding roof. Perfect. In your conversations, or conversations you and Spencer Brown had with Turkey, Alishak, of course, let's get it right. He made this whole thing happen.
33:06 I mean, people are finding all sorts of names. He made it all. There's nobody out there, yeah, that made this fight other than Turkey Al-Shake. This fight's been happening for 10 years with all the promoters, alphabet promoters in the world, yeah? Everyone out there, not going to name any names, but all of them combined.
33:23 Tried to make this fight, and they couldn't do it. The one man moved heaven and earth and got that money and made this fight happen. So there's nobody can take credit for this. Not my people, not Joshua's people, but the man. himself, Turkey. And you know, three years ago he told me, I'm going to make the biggest fights in boxing happen. I'm going to do this, this, this and this, and everything he's done
33:44 and made it all happen. So a fair plate of Turkey, he's an absolute don't. As you said, there was big talk in 2020, big talking 2021. The fight was, I think he had a date in 2021, we're going to Saudi. How would that fight have been compared to now? Because when this fight was first really seriously mentioned, I don't mean, you know, you saying I'd like the fight, and him saying I'd like to fight, you. When this looked done in June of 2020, and you were both unbeaten, Yeah. What sort of fight would that be compared to the one we're going to get now?
34:10 A better fight or is this a better fight because you're seasoned? What's your gut feeling, Tice? I think this is a better fight now because if we would have fought by then the chin-dim, he could have had a long career still because it was a long time ago. But now, we're both at the end of our jobs
34:23 and, yeah. I think it's more important now, to be fair, than it would have been six, seven year ago. Important now. Bigger, in some ways? Bigger, look how long people's waited and when you can't get something, can you want it?
34:33 You pay extra, don't you? Can I tell you, Tyson, and I came down on a train from Manchester this morning and I walked through Houston, then I got on a tube, then I walked from Hammersmith. There were groups and groups of Tyson Fury fans out there. I got stopped about six or seven times
34:46 I got stopped on the tube by lots and lots of people. Are you getting that sense of that feeding since you've been back for two days? 100%. It's like the World Cup finals happening, a 16-1966 repeat. This will split the country. Half Fury fans, half A.J. fans. And it's the biggest boxing event
35:02 that I've seen in my lifetime. Like the people here, the organiser said usually for the massive events we've ever done, we get like 100 media people applying. We've had 200 already. That was a few days ago, so. It's like those days when 600 went to the Rumble in the Jungle, that type.
35:17 It's got that kind of feel to it. Let me ask you this. As we're getting closer and closer to it, you're going to go overseas somewhere, you're going to go and train somewhere, you're going to go away somewhere. I'm going back to Florida. Yeah, okay.
35:28 So you're going to move in Florida. And let me ask you this also. Now, we know that you sparred of him in 2010, because you did that interview with me on BBC London, and you were really honest about him. You're 22 years of age. You were a kid. And you sounded about 12.
35:39 I sounded about 15. It was brilliant stuff. Now, you're then you bumped in with Marbeah. I think he was in a car and you were walking all the other way around. And my understanding is, did you do some stuff yesterday? Did you come into contact with him yesterday?
35:52 Was he in the same building? No, I didn't come into contact with him. No, we was at the same place, though, but it was a different time zone. Okay. And you're convinced that there's fear on their side, aren't you? You're convinced about it. You know, your gut feeling tells you there's definitely some fear.
36:05 E.B. that ring on the night looking for a comfy place before the bell's gone to fall over. Your last fight was in Thailand against Marius Fack, a big old lump who you know very well. You've got a few rounds to add to the rounds from Macmuda earlier this year. Absolutely. Those are priceless rounds, as you and I talked about, for a very long time. He had an odd fight, let's put it that way. Did that concern you?
36:26 Did you think in the opening round when you eventually watched the Christian Pringer fight against Asia? Did you think it's all off? No, I didn't because at the end of the day, yeah? I was on a plane actually flying back from Thailand We were waiting for you We were convinced you were coming No no no no And then I heard he's down
36:43 He's down I was like who's down And the signal went off on the phone So no one can see what happened And like oh I also heard was AJ's been knocked down a couple of times I was like what's going on So it could have been off there and then But now you start
36:54 It's how you finish And yeah He knocked his man out So fair play to him But yeah good It's heavyweight boxing I've seen a lot of stuff online Yeah
37:04 about people saying, oh, he's finished, he's this, he's like, can't take a punch, this dormant bould him over and all that. But the end of the day, it's heavyweight boxing, as we all know. I've been down myself probably ten times. So if you get clipped on the jaw, you'll go over no matter who you are. Absolutely. And yeah, it's definitely heavyweight boxing and anything can happen in there when you're in there with big 18, 19 stone men swinging away.
37:26 And there is a history of some of the greatest fights in history, greatest fights you've ever seen, being towards the end of boxers' careers. the thriller in Manila between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali wasn't the fight that they had originally at Madison Square Garden when they were both unbeated and a lot younger. But it was a better fight. That can happen as well. I think it will be a good fight for long as it lasts.
37:48 I really do. I don't think no one's going to be disappointed in this. This has been worth the weight, and it would be worth waiting up for because it's going to be exciting. It's going to be fireworks landed. Eight minutes of Tyson Fiore without the mention of sausage once. I'm gobsmacked. What's happened to him?
38:04 He's losing his edge. And at a press conference, he did Coeddy and a sausage about four times. So there was a sausage cowlid just not in my interview. He didn't let us down. So that's all right. We'll let him off. And no wonder they're both so grateful for this to be happening when it was in jeopardy, as recently as a couple of days ago.
38:20 And there's a little bit more needle in him there than there was at the actual press conference, to be fair. The icing on the cake, though, is how he's talked about that. And he mentioned it in the press conference as well. Is that how you see this one? Barry, because it's fair to say, as we mentioned before, lots of boxing fans, you know, former fighters, coaches, people in boxing have said this has come 10 years too late. Now, that aside, we know everybody's still going to want to watch it.
38:47 Is it true what Tyson says, that it's even better now because people have been made to wait? What do you think? No, I don't think it's even better, but for him, it might be. No, because again, it might be the last or the last but one, whatever he's saying, but it is the Icelandic kick. It's that trophy on the mantle. piece. The one you're going to show, you know, it's like
39:06 you get best boxer at night, and that's the one that goes prior to place in all your trophies. All the other ones go beyond, or you win your first national title or international vest, and that goes prior to place. And I think the head of Anthony Joshua, if he were to win, would be in front of everything else, I think. That would be it. What I wait to finish your career by beating the guy, you know, to be champion in the world is great.
39:27 But to say, you know, their careers run parallel for so long, as number one and number two in the world. And they're not that anymore, but still to say you beat the guy who, when you open your bedroom window, you can see his front door. And that's sort of what it is really in many ways. And to say I beat him or to say I didn't beat him
39:46 is even worse. And that's what we might get an inspired performance by both. And that's what we do. And mostly not everyone remembers the titles, do they? You know, like when people talk about the great fights that have inspired a generation, that they waited up for to watch, that the buildup was just epic. No one remembers
40:01 the titles. And in fact, a title's been thrown at this one which is absolutely superfluous. I'm not even going to mention it because the man that holds that title is upset and he might sue him, so that's not even if he's not even on there. But can I just say that Barry is just conjured up an image there and it's a great image. It's an image that David Hay
40:17 once got in trouble for. David Haye once showed up at a press conference in Germany with a picture on a t-shirt and he was holding up the two severed heads of the Klitsko brothers. One Vladimir, one Vitaly and the brothers lost their call over it. And Vladimir said, that when he was beating David Hay over 12 rounds,
40:35 every single punch he landed, he remembered that t-shirt. Well, Barry's just conjured that up. He said, when Tyson Fury gets back to his house and looks up, and there's the head of AJ. Just to let people know, that was a T-shirt that David Hay wore, and they do it in Gladiator, which was a movie. In boxing, you don't win your opponent's head. It doesn't go back as a trophy to your house.
40:55 I'm sure. I said, you see, Steve, we want to come to Wales, more. You understand. Parts of Ely, that might be the case. Sorry, apologies to everybody who lives in Ely. No. So that's, trust me, that sort of image, that sort of image is absolutely true. And that's how I see about this. That's how I feel about this fight. Forget the titles. Forget the money, which is hard because they're making absolute fortunes. We know that.
41:16 But the idea that one takes the other home with him and he does and he sticks him up almost like he's in a cage, like he's a tiny human being in a cage bouncing around. And he's going to sit up there on pride of place above the fire for life. Now that's an image. Not the severed-haired image, Barry. What are you doing? There's two children listening. I want to just ask quickly, Barry, about, you know,
41:41 Buncey asked there about who would be involved in AJ's camp, whether Ben Davidson would be, whether it was Team Usick that would be involved. We know his work with him. Fiore says he's off to Florida. I mean, what do you make of those scenarios in terms of the teams and the training camps? I mean, I'm always at the assumption. I'm always at the belief, sorry, that the fight that makes the train there anyway. but a good trainer's worth
42:04 is weight in gold and you have to be, and at this stage of their careers, though Anthony Josh is always searching for new stuff, you are what you are now, you just got to hone what you've got really well and Fulley knows that,
42:15 knows what he is, and always has known what he is. So him training in fraud is good because it's going to be, early hours in the morning, he gets used to that time zone and when he flies back, he'll be a private plane
42:25 so he won't have to fly commercial and get to their times, he can go whenever he wants to go. So he'd be in mode. For Joshua, he just needs, clear instruction. What anti-Josh needs is almost a reset of a clear mind
42:38 with all the knowledge that he's learned, I think, Steve, is too much and I think he needs a clear mind and just do the simple stuff. Barry, he said something to me in the interview. He said something to me before the interview, and he said something, he buried it, he got buried at the press comments. He said, this training camp is going to be about basics. He said, I want to do it.
42:54 The word he used to me with some basics callus phoenix, okay? And then he said, I'm just going to run, and I'm going to spar like the guys did in the old days. Now he said this to me two times today's days. And I think he's got it in his head that as much as it would be lovely to do all of the stuff he's been doing, to build that body that we see and we admire and people love and do all this kind of stuff where he measures everything. Perhaps he just thinks, you know what, I'm going to do like Ali did. I'm going to wear boxing boots in the gym and I'm going to wear work boots, big boots when I go running and that's
43:27 what I'm going to do. I'm going to go back to the old days. I got that feeling. And you No what? It might work. But Anthony Joshua was never... We talked about Anthony Joshua in his pomp when he went... When he ripped through everyone and won the world title, that he just went through and destroyed everybody. But he did it with finesse.
43:44 He didn't just... It wasn't abandoned. There wasn't no thought behind it. He had a nice little bounce to his step, a lovely rhythm to his work. Like in Pangan, but he'd been knocked on the second round. And he threw correct, and he threw neat. And because he turned from the core correctly.
43:57 Nothing fancy, nothing silly. He had his shoulders square. He didn't lean over his front foot, which means he could throw the right hand, left hook, left hand, he can throw fluently and he has power. He tried to add to his game and he lost what he was good at.
44:10 That's what I feel after the Ruiz loss. Too many voices, Barry? It's too many voices, Barry? And also, a thirst for knowledge is brilliant, but sometimes too much in your brain cloud you and you can't think straight. And then you're confused of what you want to do.
44:23 So you take instruction, but taking instructions is a very loose thing. In the ring, as you know, Stacey and Steve, Steve, was it? no deal you Fitzroy laws amateur at the year in 72
44:35 72 that's generous hey listen when your weight jokes earlier on these age jokes I'm having to complain I'm going straight from this office to HR we've got to keep you grounded
44:46 whatever you're told you have to think for yourself in the ring and if you've got too many thoughts in your brain you're cloded and you're not being able to react properly
44:54 and perhaps that's what he was meaning by boxing simple it was as if he was convincing himself let alone everybody else Now, earlier we chatted about Dana White's role in the fight and in what capacity he is or isn't involved,
45:06 which is still not really clear. But we know one thing that is clear is that there's no love lost between White and Eddie Hearn. So here's Eddie talking to Buncey. Well, we stand here without him. I mean, you know, ultimately it was a battle that we had to win. I'm not going to goad it too much. I think they've done a good job for us in the PR stakes.
45:27 But it wasn't really about winning the PR battle. it was about winning the contractual battle and making sure that you don't allow people to walk all over you just because they think they're bigger than you. And, you know, we had to stand our ground. The Dana White thing actually got blown out of proportion to a point where people actually thought
45:45 that it was the be all and end all, it was the big argument. It actually wasn't. It wasn't the biggest argument in the end. There was other issues that we had to deal with. Resolved now? Yeah, all resolved. Well, we're good. But ultimately, the UK battle was the big battle, and also Dana White promoting the fight
46:01 because he was the one that wanted to take it to America and he was the one that told everybody I've done the venue deal I know where it is, it's in America and I'm the promoter none of which was true so now we move on and I've said to Turquilla Sheik
46:14 listen we'll get a press her out of the way and he won't be here and if we think there's a way that he would add to the event we'd have those conversations but it's got to be discussed and it's got to be valuable to Anthony, ultimately, and to Matron.
46:31 So actually sitting down with Dana and Turkey? I don't have a problem with that, but that was a fight we had to win. Because this is the early days of the battle. And you know something, I can do this 365 days per year, 24-7. And Dana said the other day, Eddie Hearned us, 300 interviews a day. Guess what? I'm now going to do 400. You know? And I will be the pain in your ass every single day if you choose to disrespect us.
46:57 And there was a point, Eddie, about three months ago, I was talking to, I forget what show, and you said, you know, the Dana, you used to communicate with him. You and him, like, friends is maybe not the right word, but you. But he says, I don't know what happened to Eddie Hurd. I'll tell you what happened. You came into boxing, and you said everyone was useless. You said nobody had any vision, and you're going to come in, and you're going to finally sort this sport out.
47:18 Well, guess what? We've been working in this sport for nearly 40 years. We took that extremely personally, and now it's a war. And I'd say it's going to be Eddie V. Dana, and it's been that way, and now it's heating up, and that's all people are talking about in the business side of the world. So I like it.
47:33 Listen, it's great. I mean, if that don't get you up in the morning, what are you even in the game for? I mean, Matron's been about fighting off competition and beating competition, you know, not just before the boxing, with the other sports, and then during the boxing,
47:44 your dad had 15 years of Mickey Duff and Frank Warren. You had a good 10 years with Frank Warren, and then a couple of years towards the end. I mean, it's been about conflict. I mean, sports promotion is about beating the opposition. But also, you know, you deal with a lot of people in boxing. boxing.
47:58 Dana White couldn't lace Frank Warren's boots when it comes to boxing. They don't know what they're doing. Massive company, by the way. Extremely powerful, no clue. No clue when it comes to boxing. And Frank has plenty of clue when it comes to boxing. And Frank is ultimately resilient.
48:13 You talked about 30, 40 interviews a day or 300. It'll match me for that. But, you know, ultimately, everybody is up for the fight in boxing. That's why it's the worst business in the world because it's never ending. And you've got to be a sick type of human thing to get up in the morning every day
48:28 and just go, let's go. And Ed, you've been buried here in this building and you've spoken to Asia, you've done some stuff of Asia. Have you seen Tyson so far? No, I only saw an interview that I posted with Rick Reno. No, he walked past Rick Reno, and he went up to him and he said, you're sitting next to Eddie Hearn, make sure you give him a lot of .
48:46 And I thought, good, it's on your mind. So listen, it's going to be a lot of fun. This is what people pay to see. They want to see the fight. They want to see the buildup. They want to see the press conference. They want to see the back and forth. It'll be interesting.
48:58 AJ's chilled, he's cool, and he knows what fear he's going to do. He's going to get up there. He's probably going to rip his shirt off. He's going to scream and shout, beat his chest. And then we're going to go to training camp and get ready for the biggest fighting boxing history. And finally, Ed, I mean, this deal was done 27th of April. We've talked about it. We've talked about it.
49:14 There have been all sorts of ups and downs. But then last week, when it was formally announced by Netflix, of course, that was when Dana was mentioned as being involved. Was that a bit of a letdown? Yeah, I mean, it was a contractual breach, and it was a, Netflix didn't really get the memo. But, you know, that's why we had to do that. That actually really did put a spanner in the works of things.
49:33 And it just made us want to make sure that we sort this out and we did it. I think Max Kellerman said it right on the broadcast. You know, I think obviously he was given the line. You know, Dana White is not the promoter. He's working in a personal capacity with his excellency. Those guys are partners. And by the way, Turkey wants Dana involved in the event. But I know what we signed.
49:53 and we've got to make sure that's honoured. Like I said, we won the battle, but there's many battles to come. And just finally, almost finally, Turkey, I say, my honest analyst, is he wanted the fight in Britain anyway? Is that true? Yeah, all along. Yeah, we never talked about anything else other than a fight in the UK. He got romanticised by people who told him
50:15 that this would be amazing in New York. And I think when he saw the reaction, and we saw the reaction, and it made AJ turn down eight figures. to avoid doing the fight in America and keep it in the UK. I think he's over the moon the fights in the UK. And finally, generally, finally,
50:32 Ed, at the moment, everyone loves you. What are you going to do? You've got to do something to upset people. You've got to get back to a love hate. You know the saying, this two shall pass. In good or bad, this two shall pass. And we're on a bit of a hot run at the moment.
50:43 You know, I've had unbelievable love from the people of Ireland. Now the British public like me again. This two shall pass, Buncie. It won't be long. Give it a week or so. Takes it in his stride. he's been here before.
50:54 Buncey says that the mention of Dana White put a spanner in the works. Should he show up in the build-up to this, particularly on Fight Week, would it be a spanner in the works or would it be fireworks? If he shows up without the meeting that Eddie's proposing between Turkey, Alashake and Dana White and himself, then it would be chaotic. It would be ugly. My gut feeling is Dana White will sit down with Turkey and with Eddie and they'll come to an agreement.
51:24 Perhaps Dana can help with the American quotes promotional side of it. Now, again, you know, Barry's edged to get in here and say, but he's got no right. I agree. But he's Turkey's pal. How about that? He's there because he's Turkey's pal. Barry, come fight night, of course, in Cardiff,
51:45 which is a great one for you, by the way. Well played. When the bell goes, what are you expecting now? Fury in the press conference said, he's going to run out, he's going to put it on him. None of us would really expect that. What do you think is going to happen? Is that what you think is going to happen?
52:00 I think he will, yeah. I think if anything, what he saw in the fight against Pranger is making panic early. Making panic very early. Put it on him. Because he can faint fury as well. He's long, he knows of the box long, he can punch from range and he's fast.
52:17 Even though his feet are not as fast, he used to be. His hands are still fast. He runs up to him, feints, long left hook over the top I mean and if my theory about Josh and not be able to see the punches
52:28 coming those punches over the back of the glove on the, you on the temple just on top of the year just above there they know they scramble your senses even though you know
52:38 what's going on your legs portray you and I think you could get to him early really could for me Joshua's got to take a leap of faith being a real
52:46 positive mindset he has power and when you've got power I say it all the time because I never had it make him feel it early because I've been in that situation and when you make someone feel the power early
52:57 it makes them second guess every move they make and if you can do that to Fury that'll slow him down it slow his mind down and it's all about your mind and with that then Joshua will build confidence and that power he has would be prevalent
53:09 but if Fury comes goes at him early I mean if this fight was happened six years ago then I'd say nonsense Fury he's gonna box him frustrate him spinning dancing with him messing around with him holding him and he gets close and Joshua's just going to
53:22 be the bull. But they're different animals now and I think that's where we're at. I think Fury has the ability to do that. But if Joshua can take the centre of ring, just roll back the clock a few years as he showed against Ogunna,
53:36 Ogunnam's a different prospect. As he showed with that positive mindset, he can do the job. But I wouldn't put a penny on it from what we saw in the last contest. That's just being pragmatic about the whole approach. Theori does have a way of telling us
53:48 the truth when he makes a prediction. He often lives up to it. so he might just surprise everyone if indeed people are surprised at him announcing what his tactics will be. Thank you so much, Buncie and Barry. That's all with time for. And we're all back together on Saturday
54:03 as we have live boxing here on Five Live. Ben Whittaker continuing his rise up the ranks. He'll be taking on Connor Wallace in Birmingham. 54:26 So, Fury against Joshua, signed, announced, press conference done. What could possibly go wrong? This is the football story of the century. It's pandemonium, it's ecstasy. It's an authoritarian regime. For the past 15 years, English football has been dominated by Manchester City. They are champions again, but not only that, they've won it four years running. And no one's done that ever.
54:54 Then the Premier League dropped a bombshell. The Premier League has charged Manchester City with more than 100 breaches of its financial rules following a four-year investigation. Somebody turned up at the Hetty had stadium and effectively served papers. Here in-depth analysis and explanation on football on trial.
