Starting point is 00:00:00 buddies welcome to the show it's a glorious day beautiful day here in martyloop so glorious as most days are in martyloom i don't know if it is glorious i uh there was a lady walking behind me and she goes well i can understand now why they're getting sued from them martelow more on that in the pender yeah stay tuned yeah stay tuned on that uh-huh presentation of bet 365 big day for bet 365 go boys i'll tell you But if you want to get in on the Stanley Cup playoffs, might be your last chance. Whatever your bet is, it's never ordinary at Met 365, official partner of the Stanley Cup playoffs must be 19 or older.
Starting point is 00:00:52 And the super chat. Oh, yeah. Raising money for the U.S. Centers of Calgary, you put a comment into the live YouTube chat with the donation and you're helping the kids, and we'll put your comment on the program. That's a good couple. easy also good luck for the panthers is what the super chat the more it makes it's clear that the more the super chat makes the better the panthers do yeah let's so let's there's a direct correlation rah rah red is back you're you've been freshly buffaloed how was it that was so good yeah oh god so good look at his hat guys look at his hot guys george george s t r eight get it it's deep
Starting point is 00:01:39 you got quite the air yeah i got a lot of red and yellow yeah big day in calgary i promise you this if we get the right thing tonight I won't be wearing red yellow tomorrow yeah it's a big day i guess huge yeah
Starting point is 00:01:57 kids and ball finals you got special top secret event yeah that's right there with the comment can't say anything no don't you get tomorrow here's what i've come to realize we don't have any i don't think we have a whole lot to do with it uh shut up i know yeah i feel like what are you talking about we have massive influence on all things because i've kind of monitored how things go it's well if you do this well i'm going to do
Starting point is 00:02:21 it and i don't know that there's really any connection between what i wear eat do that's that's that's not that's an impossibility because the world and all things science are connected it's the butterfly factor right there's different layers and this is going to affect that and then the other It's going to be different than that. Never mind the other dimensions. Yeah. But I guess way off base in your comment. Just my, I guess my place in it.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Because I feel like there's probably other people out there who would be on the other side. They're probably trying to do non-jynxy things. Like J-Rod. Waring the right stuff and eating and not doing it. The coaches of the team. Or whatever it is. It's going to affect the game. Or the losers from Oilers.
Starting point is 00:03:02 So does that cancel out my attempts with? Okay. Well, then I'll just say it. I don't like this at all. You're not going to like it, but you've got to think it's here. What's happening this weekend? Three days of rain and 11 degrees.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Okay. Maybe there's something to watch on TV one of those nights. Are you going opposite, George, or what are you? I'm just saying it. You don't want to watch the hoops? Oops. No? Hoops.
Starting point is 00:03:39 Because it's a game six tonight. Okay. I retract that statement. Again, you know what? It has no bearing on it, Rhett. If you guys just want to scream that the Oilers have won the cup and the series is over, that worked on Friday. We need to get back to that script.
Starting point is 00:03:52 It's a bit of a twist because it's the, I'm hedging my emotional, whatever, upside, downside. Oh, another game? Great. Because I'm so positive. What do we say on Friday? I don't know. Jack, what are you?
Starting point is 00:04:08 I don't remember. I mean, I've had a lot of beers. I do now that. Well, yeah. Yeah. But, no, I just remember like, did you get punched in the notes as well? Because it looks like there's a,
Starting point is 00:04:19 there's a whole bunch of sun, a lot of sun out here. I love baseball in the weekend. Thursday night was a demoralizing loss for Panthers Nation and Canada's team, the Florida Panthers. And I think you guys really wore that on Friday, if I remember correctly. If the Panthers get a bounce in overtime,
Starting point is 00:04:36 how differently do you feel? Not at all, very. I mean, it's, again, it was another one. bounce game if you just tuned in halfway through the second and i get it you can't just wipe away through nothing lead but we literally sat here and said it's probably going to be another coin flip game it it changes obviously three one changes everything but it doesn't change what you saw happen in that game last night right the panthers shit the bed or you have a chance to go up three to one and take a strangle hole and this is that this is the team you're supposed to be you're being
Starting point is 00:05:11 blotted as this band of druthers and this, you know, pack of dogs. Not last night. Not with essentially the cup on the line. So you weren't impressed when they tied it in the final minute? Not really. You weren't impressed. Not really. He was not impressive.
Starting point is 00:05:28 No. God, you're negative. That was very impressive. Horshit luck is what it was because they tried to make another play. It went off a leg and came back to Reinhardt. Oh, just like the game went in overtime where a one-handed shovel towards the neck was off a leg and in. Come on.
Starting point is 00:05:41 there's luck both ways it's okay Ryan no I'm telling you the odds are still gonna be like you can be emotional the sports books are not Edmonton will not be minus 500 on Saturday what are they'll probably be minus 150 yeah they are going to be which is what Florida was last night which is we still have a series I can't believe you're writing them off yeah whatever it's good editing yeah I can make it sound like you're saying anything spun me into a corner there yeah Jack, really. It's been. Twisted our words.
Starting point is 00:06:20 I don't, again, I, I guess I've blocked out a lot of what happened a year ago. I don't remember it being this topsy, turvy. Has it been? How good hockey? How has it been so close? Three overtime, like, four overtime periods through five games. Right? It's wild.
Starting point is 00:06:36 But yet, and then two blowout, but it could have been a sweep as well. Yes. And Evanton could have been up three O as well. I mean, this is, I guess not three, oh, but three one. you play a lot of overtime. There's been a lot of coin toss games. And I think the hockey's been phenomenal. The uninvested, the non-Florida-Edenton fans have said,
Starting point is 00:06:55 this is a series for the ages, all these incredible comebacks. What have you turned off this series? I don't believe that. What are you talking about? It was 6-1 in Florida. Yeah, and it was a WrestleMania for the third period. You couldn't turn it off. It was amazing.
Starting point is 00:07:06 Everyone was out for blood. Okay. And then, okay, so Florida is up in game five. but this is the one team, they can come back. And so even that was kind of good until the last empty netters seal. The big goals have been told. They need those big goals.
Starting point is 00:07:24 No, it's been a phenomenal series from everything I've read outside of Edmonton and Florida where it's just everyone's so emotional. The people are pissed right off. Are they? They should be. This is bullshit. They're getting screwed. J.J.
Starting point is 00:07:36 Petrka Lee. She probably moved out of that team out of there. I was reading this morning. It has been for a while. The ratings are not great. in the U.S. No, people in Canada
Starting point is 00:07:46 are watching. Well, it's Canada's a team. Yeah. But outside of bubble when there was nothing else to watch on TV. I'm trying to remember.
Starting point is 00:07:57 I think it was the Pittsburgh, Detroit. Detroit. Back cups there that the ratings were. Huge. Well, this is. The worst sense?
Starting point is 00:08:06 The worst sense. Yeah. Okay. I mean, look, Miami's, it's a really, really small hockey market
Starting point is 00:08:11 and a Canadian team. I actually would not be surprised of a kind of jumping on you there, but if you're in Florida, you might not even know. It might not be on the bar. You might have to ask for it on TV. Right? Whereas if you've got it.
Starting point is 00:08:23 And again, it was the first playoffs in how many dozens of years, if not ever, that there was no original six American teams that got in. You had no Rangers, no Bruins, no wings, no hawks. These are not traditional big hockey markets that they're watching. It's a Canadian market with a great player and a very good team that happens to play in a place where hockey might not crack the top five sports in people's highlight. Big highlight, then. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:51 I mean, I've spent very little time down there, so I can't speak to it, but it would seem like that would probably be accurate. There are a lot of people who are showing up to the road games. They're feeling the lower bowl to watch it on the big screen and stuff like that. No, there's a lot of great fans there.
Starting point is 00:09:07 But the difference in fans and TV ratings is you're talking about tens of thousands versus millions of people, right? Like, it just does not register. outside of that hardcore 25 to 40,000 Panthers fans, I'm guessing. So what to expect? No idea. I've, you know what it is?
Starting point is 00:09:24 I've just kind of decided I'm going to let it play out. That's a good idea. Come in, talk about it. Well, you don't want to get emotional, Dean. Emotions getting away of good decisions, right?
Starting point is 00:09:33 It can influence your decision making. I guess it can. You can let the emotions get the best of you. You might tie into 10 or 12 beer. Yeah. All of a sudden, you're twisting off. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:42 Throwing pizza at the kids. Going out with Jack. Anything up at the trop? Careful. Two dummies were at it again. Careful out there. Hey, big win for the cats. I'd celebrate two on.
Starting point is 00:09:54 So what happened? Well, I called up Ryan. I just, but I didn't, you know, I was like, didn't plan on and staying out
Starting point is 00:10:00 until the lights came on. I'm like, that's your fault. Well, it's weird because Ryan wasn't out on Thursday. Oh, wait.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Don't recall. Oh, he was. That's a long time ago. How many? What's the over under on bed 365 of beers consumed between Thursday and, let's just say now. Oh, Jack, can we just turn off the, the broadcaster moment?
Starting point is 00:10:20 Hot bike. Let's just say it would be equivalent to about a 999 from the liver every day. I mean, Ryan, he just can't, it just, you gotta stay out until the, like, the lights come on. Well, yeah, you know that. That's what you signed up for. That's what downtown people to fix. No, not my wife. She's not happy.
Starting point is 00:10:43 We'll keep moving. Back to you, Dan. So what can we tell you about this game tonight? Oilers making some changes. Oh, yeah. We're going to have a new goaltender again. Shut the front door. Grant Fear coming in.
Starting point is 00:10:55 Skinner-merinky-Doo. Yeah, skinnamarinky-do. There you see it. Now, R&H is Ryan Nugent Hopkins, and he actually did not skate, but he's expected to play. So that's what you can anticipate, according to Rangor Shogger of TSA.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Did he not play last game? No, he's been playing, but not practicing. So there's been other people practicing in a spot and skates and things like that. He's clearly very dinged up. Run the shit out of him with four. I think they have been, yeah. Kane had kind of been banished for his stick fowls. They move him in with dry sidel and captain.
Starting point is 00:11:30 Capining back in Arvetson out. They take Stetcher and shoot him to the sun, bring in Klingberg on that third pair with Walman and put Skinner back in the net. So that's that's the. Chuck Knoblock. Chuckie. Chuckie, baby. Coaching carousel for tonight. He might pull a fast one on you.
Starting point is 00:11:55 And of course, yeah, that's, they're missing Zach Hyman in the series. Kind of, I didn't know how to get to that. Oh, you were going to jump into. Just blurt it out.
Starting point is 00:12:07 That's what I do. It's just, it all feels like it's white noise. Because once the puck drops. Well, who's who's out? I don't know that Caputin over Arvinson or Stetcher. I mean, Eckholm is an, he's your 20 minute guy every night and he was no good last game. He has to be better. Does it, does it matter
Starting point is 00:12:29 if the Florida Panthers are on? If they are not and the Oilers aside, they're going to come through with their best game of the series, then we're going seven. Does it feel that way? Sorry, I'm going to interrupt you a little bit like I've missed the last game. So maybe I'm out to lunch. And the game, and the game before that, Florida fumbled a three-goal lead. In a game one, they fumbled a three-one lead. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:52 Is it the Oilers turning it up, or is it what we said about L.A., where the Panthers get ahead, and then they try and sit on this, and you can't. I think it's probably fair to say there's a bit of both of that. Like, you can't dispute the Oilers' ability to erase leads. We've watched it for the last three years, where it's like things can click,
Starting point is 00:13:12 and they can hang it. It's crooked, number on you quick. But at the same time, you would have higher standards for the defending Stanley Cup champions in the final to be able to not let that happen. But yeah, I think it would be safe to say with L.A. and with Florida. These are very good teams that usually protect leads well, but you cannot leave a crack. If you've got a chance to close that door, it's got to go all the way. Do not give them an inch. I think we talked about it. I have analogies there. You guys did. Well, it's just, they're not heavy concern if you're cheering for Canada's team?
Starting point is 00:13:44 not the Panthers. Well, I think they're getting behind. There is for sure. They've been, they've allowed two goals in the first period every single game. That's not a recipe. They've been chasing the entire way. 11-4 in the series in first periods.
Starting point is 00:14:00 What do you need to? You need to have some better starts? Yeah, we need some better starts. Clearly. I think it's easy to assume because the Panthers won a year ago and say, hey, well, you guys squatted some leads. Yes, we did. Well, it doesn't, just because you're aware of it,
Starting point is 00:14:15 doesn't mean that it's not going to happen, that you're going to, hey, let's not do that tonight. Now that we talked about it. Let's make sure, let's get a lead in this time. Let's really hang on to it. Yeah. It's not usually that easy. I've just got to, honestly, I've kind of joking about it, but I have no idea.
Starting point is 00:14:29 No. Look, we've seen a lot in the five games we've watched. And if it might feel like it's one way and a period later, it not be that way at all, we might end up in overtime again. That would be the one thing I'm most comfortable betting is that it's going to be tense at the end and there's these empty neck walls you keep talking about. I feel like that could lose. Pathers with home ice,
Starting point is 00:14:49 they're so good at shutting these guys down. Well, they lost on home ice, if you recall recently. They're the best road team in the playoffs. They have 10 road wins or whatever. Sam Bennett has set a record for most road. I don't know. And Skinner.
Starting point is 00:15:07 What's Skinner brings to the table in Florida where he just got yarded? We don't know anything. What Skinner is going to give you? That's the thing. with Skinner. So there's nothing, there's no insight we can give on this game. Nope, not a lot. You're just saying, you're just like, I don't know, and yours, well,
Starting point is 00:15:22 I don't know. So, oops. Yeah, okay, see, you got a big one last night. Tough night for Halliburton. That's a oil and gas company? Yeah, tough night for sure. Haliban. You like gamesmanship? Would you be a guy that would, if you were in a playoff, it'd be like,
Starting point is 00:15:40 I'm going to these guys. If you had an opportunity. focused on me usually but yeah go ahead what you know uh this is from mark specter spec so ain't taking no shit so how does it work sweat and bullets so how does it work when you have uh practice ice the home team goes first and then the road team yeah goes on after um i think it's different florida because they have two sheets they have two sheets two sheets of ice so this was uh what happened this morning per mark specter so cardiver haggie is alone on the oilers practice ice while the rest of his team skates on the other ice.
Starting point is 00:16:17 Oilers want to practice early, but cannot. He finished. Florida assistant tells Oilers, wait, they're going to flood the ice. Oilers said, don't flood it. Just get the hell off the ice. So they sent one player talk that way to people. Oh, to go for a twirl. Well, hey, the ice was booked for a certain time. I mean, if you want to show up early, you better move that booking. Gamsmanship. It's, it is a Florida facility, not an Oilers facility.
Starting point is 00:16:44 all things are oilers everyone loves the oilers assuming that we've been told I thought there are rules to this stuff I think the rule would be if you're booked for a 10 a M. Skaid it probably starts a 10. You go on the ice after the home team
Starting point is 00:17:02 goes on the ice is the rule. Yeah, I'm not sure. But again, two sheets here, so you read. Feels like there's two sheets at that, I've heard it's a wonderful practice facility. Great practice facility. That's a big talking point in Vancouver. I would absolutely do what the Florida Panthers.
Starting point is 00:17:15 Yeah, I like that. It's good games for you. Yeah. Plus, I don't cheer for Edmonton. What time does the, what time does the 1030 skate start? Yeah,
Starting point is 00:17:26 because it's 945 here. We're using it. Get those guys from Philly down to straighten the oilers. Sure. They were not happy. I would book like a kid hockey. Oh, learn to skate.
Starting point is 00:17:37 A festival. All kinds of cheery parents. As soon as the Panthers leave the ice, a festival is. Carebear theme song, blasting, like just drive these guys insane. Sorry, guys, this confetti is really kind of like, it's melted right into the ice. We're going to have to chip away out a little bit. Little Johnny, it's Connor, McDavid Connor.
Starting point is 00:17:57 Could we get an autograph for the bullet pitcher? Like, just get right in their grill. You think this is bad for the dark arts? Come on, Florida. You can crank this up. You got a sheet for yourself. Brinks bring on all the stops. Who knows?
Starting point is 00:18:10 Maybe this is the straw that now the oilers, they're not. take it anymore yeah more guff yes spec's not gonna spec was in no he was so mad he was double spacing between words and losing punctuation he's hot okay we've not had a connor macdavid's signature moment that's scary that sounds jinxy to me like that sounds real jinxies this is something you're going to bring out again i have no bearing on it red well well i'm how that we'll see how you feel about that tomorrow i'm in my i'm fine with it. Yeah, but that's the problem with you is you just pass everything off. It's all. It's fine. Passing the back here, Dean. I've been plenty, jenksy, aware. Can't wear, don't wear this.
Starting point is 00:18:55 Can't add to it? No. It's game six tonight. Maybe they'll play seven. I did. I see it and bring your orange cooler. So you're not wearing your orange shirt either. Weird. It doesn't matter. To a tango. It does not. It's not orange. It's good. It's fine. It's fine. I asked the noodleer, Jamie McClennan, because he is there. He said, so what's your gut telling you? And he said, I don't think you can quote them these personal messages are you sending back and forth. Like, is this professional? Are you violating terms of privacy?
Starting point is 00:19:32 I didn't say off the record. Hey, noodleer, I'm going to use your hot takes. Well, he's the one that's like, hey, I'm in Florida for game six. So I'm either flying to Edmonton Wednesday morning or back to Toronto. wouldn't make Wednesday's hit can I do Thursday? Perfect. So I feel like this is the give and take. He's going to pull on the show.
Starting point is 00:19:49 Then he's going. All right. Fine. I said, what's your gut? Done or going seven? He says, I feel like seven, but I've been wrong on everything. Okay. I'll take that.
Starting point is 00:20:01 Yeah. When's Nashville? When does their game six start? Cheese toast. Yeah. I can't believe that Puts came to town. I know. He said there was.
Starting point is 00:20:12 Yeah, I know. I was going to show you something. It's very self-serving. I don't know if anyone's, it's not really anything to necessarily enjoy, but a former, I believe, teammate of yours is Bill Lindsay. Yeah, I've been listening to it because I have never
Starting point is 00:20:26 home and I'm always at the lacrosse floor. We're on the floor. And chili is always babbling away. Chili? Chili. Chili. Billy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:39 He does the color commentary. Is Doug Plagins, play by play. Who I know very well. used to we'd call the games in San Antonio. Victory Shades. Friend of the show. We've had them on multiple times.
Starting point is 00:20:50 Yeah. A friend of the show. Multiple times. I've never heard this. I know because you fall asleep during interviews, but I've literally interviewed him multiple times. On this show. I think once on this show on like three or four at the old spot.
Starting point is 00:21:00 You're full of the show. Okay. Anyway, why are you mad? Don't take your hang over and bring it in here. Not hung over to not turn. Pissing on our parade. No,
Starting point is 00:21:09 no, no, he just accused me of lying. That's all. I've never heard you have this dog guy. That's fine. I'm sorry and accuse you of law. Why is this good?
Starting point is 00:21:16 No, no, I didn't. That's not true. Okay. There are other insta circumstances where you have alluded to the fact that these people are friends of the show and we're looking at the show. Very friendly show. I didn't say you were lying. You're full of shit.
Starting point is 00:21:28 I think that is. That's kind of saying you're lying. In a way, suggesting that he's lying. So are you looking up? So what are we doing? I'm just going to say how to Doug. Say thanks for being a friend of the show. Yeah, okay.
Starting point is 00:21:40 Good. So I guess it's two things. This is your buddy, Bill, Lindsay in the broadcast booth. But also how it works when you are a broadcast team and you're working radio, I guess it would be TV too, but for radio, you go to the visitors rink and they have a producer waiting for you in the booth. He or she will run the audio.
Starting point is 00:22:03 They've got the audio levels and they make sure you can, they've got headphones on. So they're listening to your broadcast. And if there's anybody downstairs, they need to get that, that sort of thing. So it'll be someone local. So Bill and Chile and Doug are obviously Florida based, but you can see there. Producers in the background. There's their producer.
Starting point is 00:22:22 He's sitting down, got his nice, dressed nice, got a headset on. And chances are being that he's from Edmonton, might be an Oilers fan. He's from the cultural capital. You would think it's a hockey fan, perhaps. He's got this job. So just the difference in emotion as Florida Panthers goals go in the net. Right side. Out to Echolema. Five, it's wide.
Starting point is 00:22:46 Out to the near point. Now blown his own is Marsha. Pass ahead. One of know Marshaen. A breakaway. Heads in Marshaen. Can he tie the series? And he scores. Brad Mershan in overtime. And the Panthers win game two. Five, four. The series is tied in a game apiece. Off the draw, Marshan. He heads in a shot. He scores. Brad Marchand, top corner. And the Panthers strike first with 10.48 left in the game of the first two blue shard the past broken up marchion in pass walman martian and he scores marshan went to the back hand he sneaks it down low pass pickard what an individual effort for brad marshand and the panthers
Starting point is 00:23:26 have taken a three nothing lead here in game five he's a professional he's a pro yeah he doesn't want to celebrate no cheering in the press box isn't that what they say that is what they say that is what they say broadcast booth is different than the press box because you know like peter Mariah baby. Yeah. That's your own Well respected Hall of Famer.
Starting point is 00:23:46 That's a, that's part of the show. That's the theater is there. It's like your little sanctuary in the press box where you're kind of allowed to be. I got shit once for cheering of a football game. It was a press box at a hockey game. Football on TV.
Starting point is 00:23:58 Were you the Hippotank? No. We're not faking work here. Right. Why didn't they hire you when you were faking work here? Gosh, that's weird. Bastards.
Starting point is 00:24:10 So, it's a football game. I was thinking that that guy was going to cheer when the oilers scored and Billy was going to sucker. Yeah, I don't know how that worked. I didn't. Harry, I didn't have any of those. But that would be tough. If you were a hardcore oiler fan, you're sitting there working for these guys.
Starting point is 00:24:28 And they're just loving life. Well, and you're probably getting all sassy after the run they're on. You can steam rolling everyone getting all cocky, watching the other guys' levels. Billy's having a hell of a time. Oh, chilly up there, a lot of fist pumps. He's full of, yep. telling your buddies at the mill about your sweet gig at the hippo tank you get to go in there watch all the games for free in fact i'm getting paid you get paid to go to i get to watch all the games
Starting point is 00:24:50 i'm in there yeah well that must have been unreal when they scored and actually you're not really allowed to because you know the other team's broad they might hear so you just got to keep it's dude he did a very good job didn't spill his coffee there on that was thirsty after every goal i tell you really needed the drink must have been full of lose yes um let's take a look at the uh for bet 365, the Con Smyth odds. There is anywhere between one to two games left. It may end tonight. It may not.
Starting point is 00:25:21 If it doesn't end tonight, I expect there will be some shifting, potentially. Shift to have focus. Big time. The odds on favorite to win is still Sam Bennett. He's a minus 18. This is according to BET 365 official partner of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Must be 19-year-old. He's minus 200 yesterday, and Marchand was a little higher.
Starting point is 00:25:38 I think 450, so those are kind of like come together a touch. and McDavid Drysettle, very high numbers. They win tonight. Clearly, this becomes a four horse race. Bobber. 75 on. It does feel like it's been overs every game and he's been great. I just doesn't feel like with the performances you've had from Marshaun and Bennett,
Starting point is 00:25:59 he'll be able to outshine those. Bennett, the whole body of work in the playoffs, Marchand this series, like the 14 road goals or whatever that's insane. We treated away the God, Spike winner. Yeah. Jesus for nothing. Almost nothing, yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:18 Nothing. Feels like I don't know. It's a shot at Emil Heineman, but okay. Sorry, Emil. Sorry, Emil. Do you want to take it back or you stand by it? Me? Either.
Starting point is 00:26:31 I stand by. I know you stand by it. This guy wants to argue that Emil Heineman and it was a good trade. I'm not saying it was a good trade. I just remember what you said at the time. So if I say now, I'm an idiot, but if I say then, I was a sooth. Like I was brilliant.
Starting point is 00:26:44 Oh, I think what happens is that we're trying to make sense of something that happened a long time. I just think somebody likes to argue a lot. Yeah. He's picking both sides of this one, to be fair. I am. I said,
Starting point is 00:26:58 I did sit. And I've also said, shame on me and shame on the idiots that get paid millions to know better. There is also a different. There's a, I would think there's a gulf between, you know, Bennett's going to go somewhere else.
Starting point is 00:27:12 and he'll be a better player. Oh, yeah, he didn't have to do with a con smith. He's going to be a slam-dunk con-smife winner. That'd be the best power forward in the game. Oh, I'm going to make $10 million a year. 100%. There's a bit of a divide between those two. We all thought it would be better at the next stop for Sam.
Starting point is 00:27:28 I don't think anyone saw the limit would be this sky high. Now, he was always a good playoff perform, but this is just next level shit. And he's not doing this here or maybe anywhere else. It's hard just with everyone applauding how the Panthers play. it just feels like this is another right place, right guy, right fit, right time. He fits their DNA. The whole thing. Just like Marshan, like when you brought him in, you're like, this is the exact type of guy to fit the way this team plays.
Starting point is 00:27:55 I don't disagree with those comments, but I think it's the brilliance of a guy like Zito. Zito knows exactly how to build his teams. Like he saw the top scoring. Reinhardt, Linger, like Bennett, Red and got Kachuk. Forestling off waivers might be the best of them all because he's a one. Forreling off waivers. It's wild. And Carolina doesn't usually make mistakes.
Starting point is 00:28:14 Where are the misses? Not many. So then we should pass along our advice or our, you know, a lot of times it's hot take a to it, but this is not so much hot take a tud, but really invest in your front office stuff. Yeah, I'd be poaching this, who's second in command of Florida if I was running an NHL team. They got a really strong data department. They have for years. They've got a great coaching staff.
Starting point is 00:28:39 The GM knows exactly what he's doing in terms of how to win playoff game. the data staff anymore. There's AI for that shit. Okay. You can employ AI. That's fine. Yeah. Yeah. All I'm saying is like, yeah, like they're good at everything. They don't make mistakes with the cap. They don't misinterpret where guys are at and what's real and what's not.
Starting point is 00:28:57 They know exactly what kind of guys perform well in the spring. There's no mistakes. And you look at the oilers and it's like, you look at the Oils roster. You're like, yeah, there's actually a lot of mistakes in there. They're not really good with the cap. They don't really draft well. Ooh, they really overpaid that guy. but you're also not on a beach
Starting point is 00:29:13 you're a tax for your estate. It is tough because if you listen to any of the podcast, TV, the talking heads, whatever, it's like Sam Bennett's been so great. Matthew Kachuk, when he came in, it really just changed the whole culture. He and Bennett have really done such a great job. Ed Marshand of that group.
Starting point is 00:29:34 But not some, again, I'm kind of referring to. Yeah, yeah. Both guys that came directly from this town. So, yes. And was there mismanagement here? Yeah, there was. Did Sam Bennett get outperformed by some pretty bad bottom six forwards over his time here? Yeah, he also did that too.
Starting point is 00:29:49 Were the shit coaches that were running things doing good or do bad or just kind of random people that all of a sudden showed up to like. Yeah, there's some of that. The one guy that had some pedigree to his name to coach actually got run out of here because the players were scared of them. We got to chat with Connie dropping later today. And he said the guy that really like Sam the most was actually Hartley. And I don't care what Hartley like because he's a. I'm just providing what the GM told us that little tease for this afternoon.
Starting point is 00:30:17 What is what? Give us the full tease. Uh, 1 p.m. this afternoon, Jack, Flames Nation YouTube channel. We have a sit down with Flames general manager,
Starting point is 00:30:25 Craig Conroy that we recorded on Friday. A random 1 p.m. We have a show going on right now. And we will have a show tomorrow morning that will be focused on game six. And this afternoon will be a chat that, uh, timing wise, always a lot. happening the week and a half before the draft.
Starting point is 00:30:44 And obviously free agency immediately follows that. Also your chance to extend players in the final year of their contract comes up beyond July 1. That would be your Dustin Wolfs. Or depending, when you're watching it, it may already be out. I mean, if you're listening to this to this podcast this afternoon. Oh, that's a good point. Oh, geez. One o'clock.
Starting point is 00:31:03 This is already. Yeah. 1 p.m. Mountain on June 17th, maybe has. We're going to release it at the puck. Same as puck drop to see how we do. just head to head. Yeah, head to head. We're going to steal some viewership.
Starting point is 00:31:16 Yeah. Who's watching that shit? You know, when they can watch me and Pinder talk about Sam Hansick. Did you give us to him a little bit? Nope. We did ask about Sam Hansick. I mean, look, he's the GM. He knows more than we do about it.
Starting point is 00:31:31 Tell us what you're seeing. It seems pretty good. You know, Connie. He's kind of. Happy go lucky. Even keel. I'm sure there's some bad days there, but you don't really see it on the outside. I wish she would.
Starting point is 00:31:47 I wish she punched some people behind closed doors. Who would you start with, Rhett? I'm not behind close doors. Yeah, if you were going to start punching on doesn't work there anymore because he was a total asset. Okay, next to me you guys there. Jack, how you doing? I'm doing well. You mad at me?
Starting point is 00:32:10 Why would it be mad at you? I forgot to bring your shirt. I expected that. He hasn't got your pizzas yet. That was part of the deal. Oh, yeah, weird. Four pizzas. Hey, Red, can you get me a concert shirt?
Starting point is 00:32:23 Hey, Jack, can you get me four pizzas? I don't want you being picky. You got to be by your phone. It's not Rhett's Fashion Week. The Shoveler took care of Jack. She was all concerned. Really? Shewler's Fashion Week.
Starting point is 00:32:35 That is nice. That is nice. You know what the flip? Here's, it's very simple. What Craig and whoever else, I mean, what they need to do. do get Sam Bennett. Go and get Sam Bennett. Oh, no, listen.
Starting point is 00:32:47 Get the failed first rounder that's worn is welcome that needs a fresh start. Go find who is it. Who is who's four years removed from being a first rounder that needs a fresh. Shane, right? Come on down. He needs a new start. Let's go. I think we're effed.
Starting point is 00:33:05 I keep saying this because like, and I'm being, I'm serious. Like, if the owner came into Connie's office and said, Listen, you. Listen, you. We don't have an owner, owner hat, unfortunately. Yeah, flat and owner. Yeah. You down there, below me there, little guy.
Starting point is 00:33:24 Go make something happen this off season. I want to be in this cup final stuff. I love watching these games. It's so exciting. Boy, I love the playoffs. Free agents in Florida. They're hell of a player. Act glad.
Starting point is 00:33:35 Man, boy, we need a center. We need a center, right? You know what I just? We need a defenseman, right? And we got millions. in caps space. And I was just, I was just reading the CBA,
Starting point is 00:33:45 we don't even pay the players during playoffs and we get to keep all that money from the tickets. We love making money. This is brilliant. We got to get in the playoffs. That's not part of it. But if you,
Starting point is 00:33:56 if your owner had a mandate, you know what? I've been watching this two years, three years in a row, this Bennett and who else is a free agent? It's Eckhart. March and, Eckblown. Okay.
Starting point is 00:34:06 Marner. Boy, they're good. Eilers. Not Marner. Okay. Talk in Florida. Yep. Just stop.
Starting point is 00:34:11 Go get him. He's on a. roll. Go get, go get these three. I want them all. We've got lots of cap space. And if we don't have enough space, we're going to do something to get one of these other dusters out of here. Because these guys, guess what they're called, Ryan? Winners. That's right. You know what we need here? Winners. You're goddamn right. We do. So what? Let's go do it. So look at you. Yes. So we're going to make so. So it's July 1st now, Dean. Uh-huh. Oh, yeah. GM had on now. Yeah. Call Sam. And, make him an offer and Ekblad and Marchette's.
Starting point is 00:34:46 They fellas, you're all coming to Calgary. This is where it gets hard. We got a new rink. It's going to be awesome. You guys want to come up, Calgary? Come on. Stampede. Here.
Starting point is 00:34:58 You fill out the contracts, what you need in there. Open. Just blank. Do you like steak sandwiches and Alberta beef? Caesars. Caesar drinks. Ginger beef is invented here. Little known fact.
Starting point is 00:35:13 Do you like the, But seriously, you couldn't even do it. It's probably for the better that you don't do that. July 1 is where GMs make mistakes, not where they build champions nine times out of 10. You're down playing the point. No, but I think the point makes a great one that if you're the owner and you're like, I'm sick and tired of watching this damn tournament,
Starting point is 00:35:35 let's A, put some butts in seats to make some money, and B, actually try to win this tournament. These are exactly the types of things you'd be saying. We have this cap space. We can use it. this owner's allowed them to go to the cap whenever they've wanted to and needed to and basically they've lived at the cap until last year but this is where and part of this is coming up because i started ranting about it two weeks ago and then i was in buffalo and they're kind of the shitty spot where you can't get anyone to come you're not a destination in buffalo at least you got the new july first is not maybe the time to do it but guess what else needs to happen on july first you got to be able to keep your guys because there's another problem that if guys,
Starting point is 00:36:20 I mean Johnny left, Matthew left, Bennett Fed all up. He would have left or, yeah. We got rid of Monaghan, which was an absolutely terrible decision. Like, we're losing people as opposed to being able to keep them.
Starting point is 00:36:39 Look, I think. So you go draft all these guys and you think about it with McDavid up north. It's like, oh, when's he leaving? Maybe he won't. Maybe he won't. but I think you saw a good sign when Matt Coronado is a long-term deal here
Starting point is 00:36:52 that's a guy that's been around it for a few years and it's like pay. But he's a drafted guy he didn't have to buy all those UFA he was less than that right? From a July 1 getting people to come here. It's not just that though. It's not just that. Sorry, Dean, jump on it.
Starting point is 00:37:07 That's guaranteed money and he can get out of here anytime he wants and he knows it. So it's easy to say, oh, he's committed to Cal. F that he's committed to. You know what he's committed to? the millions and millions he's going to make. And I do think he likes it here.
Starting point is 00:37:21 And I think this is a group that enjoys being here. But to your point, that does not make this a destination and free agency. And you shouldn't try to be a free agency destination. It's not a debt. Yeah. And it's less about the free agency destination, because you're never going to be that.
Starting point is 00:37:34 It's about the, I'm not staying any longer because I'm sick of it here. If you have a contending team, a brand new rink and your taxes compared to some other places, this could be a destination. It has been at times. They've gone and gotten top guys in the position. in free agency.
Starting point is 00:37:49 And they've done it quite often for a team that we say can't attract guys. A bigger, I don't know where I'm trying to use. But instead of free agency, trade deadline, that's the list you want to be on. Because Brad Marchand this year says, I'm going somewhere. Guess where? It's going to Florida. I'm going to Florida. Last year, what did Tarasenko do?
Starting point is 00:38:09 Go to Florida. Hey, guess what? You're going to trade me, but I'm going to Florida. That's the list that we have to be good enough to be to get. too because yeah and so it all starts and ends with being a contender so how do you get there because none of this happens for florida everyone talks about the state taxes that's nice no everyone talks about the owner sure that's nice they've had the same fucking tax advantage their whole existence and they've been a pile of steam and fecal matter for more than half their existence
Starting point is 00:38:37 in this league they were a laughing stock it's being a well-run contending organization and people thinking i can go there and win a cup that is the biggest thing for players jack can you do some AI in for me? Sure. When did the new, when did the latest ownership group come into Florida? The Vinnie Viola. And was he criticized for quite a while?
Starting point is 00:39:00 I think a little bit at the outset. I don't know when the decision was made that they moved to sunrise from Miami, but that would have been an interesting inflection point. No, no, that's 1990. Yeah, I was well after that. I was there. You were there when they moved. Okay.
Starting point is 00:39:12 And then Viola takes over. He's got an interesting background. I Zinga had the team for a longer than that. And then there was someone in the middle, I want to say. It's kind of the same thing as the Tampa Bay Lightning. They went through those ownership, Len Berry and those guys. All of a sudden, is it Jeff Winnecker, whoever billionaire buys it. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:39:29 Now we've got a good coach and we're drafting well. And what I'm getting at is that when does the track record, when are you willing to accept the Florida Panthers track record? 2013, right. So, okay, so 2013 new guy. When did they're Bill Zito? Well, they brought in Talon, right? And then Zito.
Starting point is 00:39:47 And Talon did a lot of the work there too, didn't he? He also made some big blunders, but yeah. He signed Bobrovsky, which was a blunder. He drafted Spencer Knight four days before. It's like you realize both of these guys projectors. I don't agree with you in that. Who they've now turned into some assets. That's my point, though.
Starting point is 00:40:03 I was just going to argue with you. I don't. If you have the two best goaltenders in the world, guess what? You're in good shape. Somebody wants it. Yeah, but they didn't. That was my point. Like when you take a goalie at 12 and then you go to free agency,
Starting point is 00:40:15 it's like, well, who's going to be the one? Well, you let it play out. When you draft a kid at 12, it's going to take a few years. Spencer Knight might be a number one, 10 years down the road with a different organization. That's kind of how. So what? 10 years? No, one is the draft.
Starting point is 00:40:28 13? I'm trying to remember. I don't think. No, I laid in that. I mean, that's a different discussion. You're being cheeky about it. I'm just saying that if you have the two best centermen and they both,
Starting point is 00:40:39 they don't want to be, you can trade assets if it was all I'm getting at is, like, you did okay with Spencer night. They eventually did, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like he never really put together a season. They did better with Spencer fucking night than we did with Sam Bennett. Yeah, they did. So I don't know if you can criticize them too much.
Starting point is 00:40:57 I'm not criticizing the trade of Spencer night. I'm criticizing. Damn, but I swore. You go and sign a guy to a seven-year max interview. Well, you're just trying to argue. And all I'm trying to is get across the point that at some point there's a track record that starts. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:11 Ours goes back to the 80s. I think when you're asking when it changed in Florida, Bill Zito. that was 2020. I don't think. I think it was before that. I mean, you'd have to go back and see what the talent. The talent moves were.
Starting point is 00:41:29 But Bovrovsky was a big one in, in hindsight. Are they better because Tampa was good? Big time. And they've also poached a lot of pieces from there. Cuddera Ver Hagg he was a Tampa find. There's a lot of, they've done a lot of watching the neighbors.
Starting point is 00:41:45 And how do we do this? And the thing, it's, it's more than just Zito, right? It's having that staff of hockey people. Big data department that know what they're doing. That's... Forzling. A big data department's great, but it's not making the decisions. Like, Zito
Starting point is 00:42:03 and those guys make the decisions. No, all I'm saying is... I don't know how hard it is to import a big data. Like, you can go pay a freaking data company. Sure, you can't, but are they good. My point is that they're good at every sense. Well, hire the same one that they do you. It's just like saying, oh, well, scouting's a hard. You just go hire some scouts. No, you need the good ones.
Starting point is 00:42:18 That's what they have. They have good data people. That's what I'm saying. I feel like the data change. Isn't data data data? Yeah. So who's interpreting it and what are you passing along? Like you can,
Starting point is 00:42:31 there's so much information out there. Like who's the best meteorologist? They all have the data of like what's happening at weather centers. Who's the best of predicting the weather? That's the best data guy I want to hire. Who's got the best hit rates, you know, projecting draft classes? Who's got the best rate of finding guys there. on waivers that turn into players.
Starting point is 00:42:50 Like, that isn't just data. You can't go hire a data guy off the street because, oh, it's like, he's good at math. He'll help us build a winner. I think you're completely out to lunch on this. I think that the data stuff, you can do this now as a parent for your five-year-old. You can go hire a company, pay them, and they, and send a video in of your kid's game, and it will mark your child, and it will give you all the data of that child in that game. Time on ice, puck touches, turn over.
Starting point is 00:43:18 is this, that, this, it's just, it's all AI-driven stuff. So I don't understand what Florida could possibly be doing different that somebody else can't just go and go, I want their dad. I'm not saying the data is different. I'm saying they're better at interpreting it. That's all I'm saying. The weather analogy I like. Everyone has access to all these weather centers. What's the wind doing?
Starting point is 00:43:40 What's the humidity? What's the parametric pressure? Some people are better protecting the weather. I love arguing with you. So that's fine. Some people are better, but how much better? Five percent? Like are a third of the weather people out there dead wrong?
Starting point is 00:43:53 No, no. I think every team has a data department, but clearly some teams know how to make their team better with it, and others haven't figured it out yet. And so what would be the determining factor in the weather department as to what success is, the amount, the 100% amount of rain that you predict or like when it starts? Like, what do you mean?
Starting point is 00:44:09 Well, who's the best of predicting the future weather? Who's the best of predict? I'm not sure it's the best analogy. I know what you're saying. But look, like, this is more my space in the sense that like, I talked to a lot of people that have worked in these departments, that do work in these departments. We just don't know.
Starting point is 00:44:22 No, but I don't think you don't understand. But in data, can you name the guys that work in the flames data department? The difference doesn't make. I don't care. But that, so again,
Starting point is 00:44:32 if we're just saying data's data, there's no difference. There is no edge any team's ever had because they're all the same. You could say that there's a different interpretation of data, and I could maybe go, okay, but that should be easy to replicate at some point, because that's the point of,
Starting point is 00:44:47 having the data. I'll say this. I feel. Jack, data or data? I feel like what they've been able to do is whatever. Data, the hockey, but they've been able to identify this is what is going to make a good Florida Panthers.
Starting point is 00:45:05 He may not be a good Tampa Bay Lightning or a Columbus Blue Jacket or Calgary Flame, but for us, Jonah Gajovich or Losterinan who is a high, he's going to be a good fit for what they got marshan no marshan i want to go there let's not not over survive i guess i'm not trying to say florida's good because data what i'm saying is every single facet of their organization is world class they draft well they don't fuck up the cap by giving guys way too much money like pan darnall nurse to be a one see i think that's more important than you're the i think all i'm saying is that everywhere you look it's savvy decisions and there aren't mistakes and they're playing
Starting point is 00:45:45 a team that's made a lot of mistakes in the last 10 years. And when we're talking about, oh, what is it, a 1 or 2% chance? Well, that's going to be the difference between these two teams over the last time. Right. Like they've got, like Rick Dudley has been a GM and has been in hockey, his whole life. He is there. Paul Fenton is a former AGM and GM. He is also there.
Starting point is 00:46:04 This is my whole point. They are good at every single thing. But that's, I mean, that's not data. Those are, it's just they have hot people. No, they have a great dad department. They have a great cap department. They have great scouts. We don't have to ask.
Starting point is 00:46:14 They're good at everything is all I'm saying. Stop. So we don't actually have to disagree with you. Then fine, copy it. Go do it. Go hire their guys. Honestly. When it's the best of the best so that we can.
Starting point is 00:46:24 That, when Craig Conroy got hired here, that was my only complaint. But you're still a high. You had a chance to go peel someone out of a really, really smart front office. And Craig understands this organization, I think is going to do a fine job. But they didn't go explore the opportunity to go find someone working in a very, very savvy, cutting edge organization, in my opinion. They got someone that was watching. here was it dysfunctional here when when craig was a gm you just talked about all these blunders
Starting point is 00:46:50 i think it's i think it's been and maybe dysfunctional is wrong but i'm sure it's been dysfunctional forever so that was the environment he watched and learned to be a gem in that you missed an opportunity you'll pull some out of florida for the living had it doesn't have to be that guy you can hire other people and these guys if there's new like you couldn't go get rick dudley are you saying go get Rick Dudley he's highly sought after I'm saying go audit your team go interview all these guys
Starting point is 00:47:19 yeah but you're putting it this is you and your draft pick stuff so I don't want to argue with you about it but this is your take we got to get draft pick draft pick yeah but it doesn't matter because there's only a 10% chance of the draft picks draft oh yeah but it doesn't matter and data well it's what you're interpreting
Starting point is 00:47:38 with the data with I'm babbling and now I'm lost. Well, no, it's, no, go copy what they're doing and make it work. And if I'm the Florida Panthers, you know what I'm doing? I'm making sure we're really hard to copy. Lock my guys in. Cone of silence.
Starting point is 00:47:57 Don't even put their names on the website. This stuff is, uh, and if you have the best scouts in the league, like, you're not just going to let a lot of walk. You can treat them well. That's part of being a world-class organization. If you've got a team that continues to get home runs in the draft, don't let your amateur scouts go. don't let any of the data people that help with the draft go.
Starting point is 00:48:15 People that build your lists for the like keep everyone if you're good at it. Like the Vancouver Canucks had a really good run of drafting and they let Judd Brackett, a really high profile amateur scout walk to Minnesota and now Minnesota is really good at the draft. They're probably only arguing over a couple hundred grand. He's an amateur scout. But the Canucks let him walk and now all of a sudden it's boldy and rosy and all these mid round hits.
Starting point is 00:48:38 He's very good. He's just, he's not really leaving. I thought there's all kinds of rumors he's leaving. Do you know many points the other year? He's a good player. They're not rumors that they're getting rid of this guy. He's due for a contractor, so he's a potential offer sheet candidate,
Starting point is 00:48:53 so there's talk about people calling them. They like him a lot. But my point being, good teams don't let that type of talent go away. If you're the best goalie coach, if you're the best amateur scouts, if you're the best dad a guy, if you're the best AGM, keep these guys, collect these guys. Because that would be the group that drafted Spencer Knight of those. That was talent.
Starting point is 00:49:12 But yeah. It would be interesting and I'm not going to do it because I don't give a shit to go back and see who Talon got in there. No, he had a big, there's his fingerprints are all over this. Right. Like, because you pass off like Talons are absolute clown. No, he screwed up the office seats in Chicago, which was a tough look. And I didn't get the goal of thing that summer. But generally speaking, he's built some good teams.
Starting point is 00:49:35 Well, and if we don't, if Brian doesn't see it, then it's probably not. Anyway, Triliving did a job for a while when the team was struggling. we got Bennett and Kachuk. There was. That's the one time I think there has been a group of players that have come in that we're supposed to build with and it completely fell apart. Didn't work. Didn't because Bennett wasn't. What could we have done different with Bennett?
Starting point is 00:50:01 Let's look back and we can use, let's use 2020 hindsight. What would we have done? Because we all sat here and said, no, it looks like he's got to go and it's not going to work out. We all said it. Pull up his numbers because I think it's important to remember the context of how ugly it had gotten there. And we asked Craig about this in the layer this afternoon. Trying at the end. And we asked him this sort of question.
Starting point is 00:50:21 And I think there's two sides to the coin and we can get into it. One is just like the player was not performing no matter what spot you put him in. And the second is why didn't you airlift him higher up the lineup? But he clearly hadn't earned that by merit. It was a weird spot. It's tough because. And also there's points in that, but we also forget. He was, he's not a.
Starting point is 00:50:42 He was like a young stallion just throw. the gate opening. I mean, he was wrong position and the wrong side of the puck and taking penalties all over the, like he, he is so focused and right, like north, south. He is so dialed in right now. He was nowhere close to this version of Sam Bennett when he was here. He's now 28. He's been in Florida for five friggin years already. So you're talking back to back 12 point seasons, not goals, points. Like, it was ugly. here. All right. That's what people forget.
Starting point is 00:51:17 12 and 38 before the trade. Sure. But point being like 15 and 10 afterwards. Yeah. I'm That's the one that stands out. It's not okay. He was struggling in Calgary. So if we go chronologically. Let's not forget it was COVID and the world
Starting point is 00:51:32 sucked. Totally. Like that. And I think at the end of it, there's going to be a lot of factors. There's going to be one smoking gun of why it didn't work here. There's a lot of different coaches. COVID bleeping sucked. The team happened to be deep at the position. played or wanted to play. But he has a great rookie season 18 on Backland's wing in 77 games.
Starting point is 00:51:50 That might have been the worst thing ever to happen to Sam Bennett because you know what that did? He was never going to the American League. Yeah. And if this guy went to the American League and played number one center minutes in all situations, it looks different here. But can I jump in front of you there for a second? How come, so where'd Sam Bennett get drafted?
Starting point is 00:52:10 The highest draft pick ever in franchise history. In franchise history. I think since they moved to Calgary. So in other franchises or situations, when you're drafted that high, guess what you get? Opportunity. Opportunity. And put in the response. So we draft the highest pick we've ever picked.
Starting point is 00:52:29 And then we decide to throw him on the wing. Okay, fine. But we. And I was part of it. He wasn't earning it. I'm not, I don't get to make any decisions, but I'm not resolving my past comments. But he was. never got we could go
Starting point is 00:52:46 Rossi you just brought up. Is he center? Yes. Where was he playing? Center? Yeah, he's been good. Yeah. Like he's he's he's double. He got to play center and got put in a spot to succeed. If we want to compare the numbers, it's not close. Like he's been what we're supposed to be. Sam couldn't deliver on that first season ever again. He never had 30 points again. You know, and again, it's, we can look back on it. I think it was because he was taken at four. there was no, we don't, there's no growing pains.
Starting point is 00:53:18 You were the fourth overall pick. But are we developing what? You're the highest pick we've ever had. You're a center. Be a center. And when he wasn't a very good center, it was, well, shit. It's not we're going to put you in the wing. We can't have you fail.
Starting point is 00:53:29 So now we'll put you over here as opposed to just saying, you know, you're going to make mistakes. Center in the NHL is a very tough spot. That was what I wanted to go to try and pull up too, is that what was the record of this team? And what were they trying to accomplish? So they made the playoffs, 1450. Just, I don't know. I'm just saying, were we out to lunch on our expectations as to what this team was?
Starting point is 00:53:48 You know what I mean? It was weird because this this core that we talk about with the Cachuk, Bennett, Godrow, Monaghan, Lindholm, when we look back at it, you're like, boy, that team was good. And you're like, yeah, but they also missed the playoffs and they were supposed to be good a lot. They never made the playoffs two years in a row that core, which is wild. The one time they did was the COVID playing thing. And they weren't the top eight in points percentage, but they beat Winnipeg. Chuck Slice, Jay, please leg, if you remember.
Starting point is 00:54:15 They didn't even get to the playoffs in back-to-back years. It wasn't like there was this dynastic team that got torn apart as some people are trying to remember it. No, but it was a flawed group for whatever reason. Bennett, not developing was a big part of that. That's what I was just going to say. If you have Sam Bennett playing the way he's playing with that group and growing and they've continued to go together, it might be a different story.
Starting point is 00:54:35 Totally. And so I think a part of the issue was for a lot of his time here, who are the three centers playing above him? Pouty Lindholm. Lindelho was very good, Monaghan, who was good when he was healthy, and Michael Backland, who is an excellent defensive centerman. If you were going to play him at center, you were literally hurting your team's ability to win
Starting point is 00:54:55 with these coaches that needed to win, or you're playing them at fourth line center. And it's like, okay, well, maybe try them up the lineup, and you'd see when someone was out with a bump in a bruise, like Monahan, it would be, okay, Bennett's going to go up top with Lynn Holm and Goddrow tonight, and it would be one-on-twos through them rather than dumping it in. Ozone penalties.
Starting point is 00:55:14 This was not a great player that got away from the flames. He hadn't figured out how to be a great player yet. Maybe that's on the five coaches he had here. That's what I was. Or maybe it was once he left Calgary and the weight and the pressure of supposed to being a star went away that he finally flourished. I don't buy that. I think it's all apart. I don't.
Starting point is 00:55:33 I don't think any of the, how's pressure in the Stanley Cup finals? I don't think he's pressured at all. Okay. Well, then why would he be pressured about being the high pick? Well, I think he was in a different headspace here. I think the guys go into this. I'm number four overall. What I would say is this though.
Starting point is 00:55:48 When I saw Sam around Calgary, he did not exude confidence like you see him in Florida. Because he was playing like shit. That's my point. It had nothing to do with it because he was drafted. I was playing terrible. Right. And there was an expectation that he'd be a star.
Starting point is 00:56:01 Everywhere he went in the city, it was like, this guy's going to be our star. And he gives 12 points in back to back years. And it's like, what's happened? Am I not going to be a star? Like, what is going on?
Starting point is 00:56:11 I need to get the bleep out of here. And guess what he's, not running into in Florida. Anyone who knows who the hell he is. He shaves his head, turns into a man and plays straight line hockey, and his career explodes with Hubert Owen, Duclair on his wings. They were the top line in the league that year. It's wild. But I think all these little things add up to why there isn't one reason it didn't work here. It's five different ones. I'll screw it up, I guess. Partly for one year. Galletson for two. Peters for two. Jeff Ward.
Starting point is 00:56:46 Jeff Ward for one. And Daryl for a spring. And I think everyone goes back and says, oh, Daryl would have done this. Daryl would have done that? Maybe. Daryl's a real good coach. But we can go back and look at the ice town.
Starting point is 00:56:57 I bet you Daryl wasn't playing the shit out of Sam Bennett down the stretch. He wasn't playing them all. And Sam wasn't earning it. I remember they were in Montreal. And I'm like, he's not even trying. So if he doesn't want to try, then get him out of here. And so you can talk about, well, when you draft a guy, you got to put him in the spot where he's going to succeed.
Starting point is 00:57:12 Like, no, this is still a merit business. If you can't take minutes. away from nine forwards on this flames team you're a fourth liner and darrell would i believe in that yeah if you're not out working the nine guys above you how you moving up that was too late by that i agree you have and then you get into the when do you get like okay he's not celebrine sure great he's not celebrating but you know what macklin celebrini was going to be a number one center on the shark like yeah my i think there was a miss what's the word i should use I think there was, it was disjointed between what the team really was.
Starting point is 00:57:51 Yeah. And how to get Sam Bennett at the ice time. I think the team ownership management thought we're, we're closer than we're really close. So we have to win hockey games. And what they should have been thinking about is, let's worry about two years down the road. Let's make sure that Bennett and all these kids that we've got coming along turn into superstars
Starting point is 00:58:13 and they're going to carry us for the next. I agree entirely. It was the balance of short-term success versus long-term development of Utah prospect. That's where there was a gap. Which is what this team often runs into issues with. I don't worry about that with Connor, I thank God, but there was a lot of thinking they were closer than they were in the last regime.
Starting point is 00:58:33 And I don't know how to parse that between if that's the owner pushing or the GM thinking they're better than they are. I don't know. Probably a combination of both. But like the Travis Hammack deals a perfect example. You gave up a first that turns out. to Noah Dobson. I think that.
Starting point is 00:58:48 And two seconds for like a number four or five defenseman who's making, who's on a sweetheart deal. Like that's just an awful deal. And you weren't close. Well, that and I was just going to say it again. I think that's a final piece move. Thinking that they're closer than they actually.
Starting point is 00:59:03 Yeah, like they clearly weren't close. The pick turned out to be number 15 or 12 or whatever. They missed the playoffs day with Amonik. That's an awful trade. Awful. And it's like Troy Brower. Good player. We're in a Brower away.
Starting point is 00:59:16 James Neal. Boy, there's some issues around this guy. Is it the right bet to make was not disaster before they got back from China? Had to trade him from Milan Luch, which is a bad deal just to get rid of him and a change of scenery. There was just too many deals where we were one guy away we think we are. And it's like, you weren't. You weren't one guy away. You never got through game five of the second round.
Starting point is 00:59:40 Yeah, like 1819. Derek Ryan had more points. you were getting outperformed by guys in the bottom six if you're Sam Bennett. It was ugly. But okay, I don't disagree. And I don't think Bennett was playing well. But that's 18, 19. When was he drafted?
Starting point is 00:59:57 13. 14. 14. So that's five years in between. How is he used? And why wasn't he in? And it might not. It absolutely might.
Starting point is 01:00:06 And it's hard to remember, was he used enough at center? Could he play at center? Are you actually going to bump back Lin, Monaghan or Linholm? Lindholm, well, maybe not, but then the roster was construed stupidly or constructive. He couldn't give them third line center minutes, or I think he would have had a lot of time there. For whatever reason, there was no success with that. 1718, Monaghan, 31 goals, 64 points, backland, 14 goals, 45 points. Sam Bennett was the third highest center in terms of scoring, 11 goals, 26 points in 82 games.
Starting point is 01:00:41 What year's that? 1718. Yeah, no wonder. Gulletson the second year. Stajun is here. Lazar plays 65 games. I remember playing a lot of wing that year. Again, we talked about every camp.
Starting point is 01:00:56 And then the next year, the Lindholm trade. So now it's Monaghan, Lindholm, backland. Told you. But again, by all means, like, go be better than the top six. He never was. It was his first year. That's it.
Starting point is 01:01:12 There was also the expansion draft happening then too as well as you're going to lose Bennett in the expansion draft what do you do? Do you get something for him? That's the one that stands out to me. It was Gio.
Starting point is 01:01:28 No one was worried about losing Bennett. He was a 12 point player. Gio was coming off a Norris a couple of years before. You're saying we didn't talk about Bennett being taken. It was all Gio is what I remember. I'm sure there was some conversation about potentially because Gio was available and they didn't trade him to somewhere where he might have a chance to win
Starting point is 01:01:45 and got a first round pick. I'm aware of those conversations. Yeah, we had a lot of those. I do seem to recall being a, do you let Bennett go on the expand, like just lose him for nothing? Or do you trade him? Because he,
Starting point is 01:01:59 he, there's a good chance. He gets selected in an expansion draft face. So then you get a, uh, a second rounder and yeah. Yeah. The other part of this that I think,
Starting point is 01:02:10 I talk about a lot with people about, when you lost Marty San Luis for nothing. It wasn't your fault. I'm not believing it. Nor the old gym. Every team had a chance to get Marty San Luis for free on waivers. One team gets it in the teeth for not getting them. And it's Calgary Flames, right?
Starting point is 01:02:32 It's the same thing with Sam Bennett. Like, all you had to do was offer a first rounder, and he was yours. Nobody outside of Bill Zito was willing to give the equivalent of two seconds. Heiman, who was the second or the year before, in a second round pick. That's how low his stock was around the league. But that's why you have to look internally and go.
Starting point is 01:02:50 And it's fine. It's not even. And it's a, it's an example of extremes. Like you said, like I don't think that we're, you could have seen him going somewhere and having success, but maybe not to this level. This is. Yes.
Starting point is 01:03:04 Pretty impressive. But you still have to do an internal audit and learn from a mistake like that and go, okay. Yeah. How did we, this doesn't look good on us. what did we do? What was our thinking? And should we have thought about it differently?
Starting point is 01:03:21 And should we have approached it differently? My takeaway from our chat with Craig is that this has been talked about a lot. And this cannot happen again. I don't know if you got the same vibes. I don't really recall that, but I'm sure it happened. Yeah. I mean, what do you remember does answer about Bennett? Not a lot.
Starting point is 01:03:43 I didn't like them. I'll tune in at one. clock. Yeah, I'll tune in at one. Yeah, the difference between going somewhere else and being a good player and being one of the highest paid free agents in the summer and winning a cons might.
Starting point is 01:04:00 This is all potential, but. Yeah, it's St. Louis all over again. The guy was winning trophies. It has been. It's been great for Florida. It's been great for Sam. It's been great for Emil Heinemann. He's found a home in Montreal.
Starting point is 01:04:14 Yeah, he loves Montreal. Great city. what about David go yet no huh figure skater oh Daniel no less more what's the soccer yeah well I was just thinking this the second round pick that they uh hmm don't recall that pick are this well I guess it's how we should move on because today's a very today this could be a great day I was telling it's a huge day for Calgary it doesn't feel like you could be yeah yeah why were you going to say wow it's kind of a long it's a bigger conversation my it's in my mind because i was just in buffalo
Starting point is 01:04:55 and the people in buffalo feel like they're never going to get out from underneath and i think there's some of that here you're hopeful because the team had a good year but then you look at the roster and you go all these guys are only going to get older which direction are we going are we ever going to have a piece that can match up against those superstars do we have superstars i don't know you're squinting how many years in buffalo no 14 or 16 14 years 14 years of missing the plate 14 and here's the thing if we're being honest with ourselves the rebuild retool or re whatever verb you want had didn't start here until feb one last year you're your year and a half in yeah and then even last year was anyway an operating rebuilding team they added no assets the conversations that we're having in buffalo were is it going to turn into baseball
Starting point is 01:05:44 where you've got the it's kind of the the provincial the haves and the have nots Yeah, I don't know. The cap's never allowed that. Like the big markets haven't had a great year. You're Chicago. The thing of it is here is, it's not that this is an owner that's not willing to spend and is just frittering away dough.
Starting point is 01:06:02 They've been a cap team up until recently. I don't think that they've... They'd be a cap team if they weren't rebuilding. They've gone to free agency in July 1 and have paid big money for players. I'm not asking for right or for wrong. I just think that's some of what it is with baseball is just the owners. I agree.
Starting point is 01:06:16 I don't think we're going to bother spending. No, but it's different too when you're trying to sign guys. So take Connor for, okay, he's going to make 20 of his next contracts. Again, it does matter. The tax. Winnipeg won the West this year. It's not easy. And why did they pay those guys so much money?
Starting point is 01:06:34 Because they know they can't go get anyone else to take their spots. They have to overpay. Who's overpaid there? Well, hell of buck. I mean, maybe he's just won the heart and the Vesda. Yeah, like that's not a problem. Make it eight in a court. Yeah, maybe I'm wrong.
Starting point is 01:06:48 I'm just saying I could see it going that way where you've got teams that have a real hard. Tell me how Buffalo is going to come out of this. I have to keep stuff. I think about Buffalo is too that the flames like old power first overall. Rass was Dahlia first overall. The flames have never had a top three and pick. Never. How is that even possible when you think about it?
Starting point is 01:07:10 Yeah. Not a number one. If you do have a first overall or a top three, you best pray that that class class. Class of age group is good because Nail Yakopov ain't Connor McDavid. And the Sabres could have had McDavid. Which is why it's probably good context because that's what it was. Finally the flames in Sam Bennett. Highest pick ever.
Starting point is 01:07:35 And this guy, he's a dog and a bone. He's a setter. He's an animal. Number one by Central Scouting. This winner. This is tremendous. Right? 18 goals.
Starting point is 01:07:47 He's the guy. That's coming off injury. Franchise player, here he is. And then when there's setbacks and struggles, so I'm, well, this is not except you're, you're the guy.
Starting point is 01:07:58 You're the highest pick ever. You can't need you. Yeah. You can't be a support piece. You need to be the one driving the bus here. And he couldn't. And he wasn't, couldn't or wasn't ready or both.
Starting point is 01:08:10 And again, if it was, I mean, he's kind of driving the bus right now, but I think in Florida, he's not had to been. There's been plenty of, very good players around them there.
Starting point is 01:08:22 But to your point, this team here, how do you, how do you, what do you? I was struck by that on Friday that it's like when you listen to the GM talk, you could see how a part of them is like,
Starting point is 01:08:35 look how close we are. And a part of them is like, man, we really got to find some young play. Like there's, most of those things can be true. And they were this year. That's why it was such a weird year.
Starting point is 01:08:45 It was interesting, much longer than we thought. But when, You step back and say what was really accomplished. It's like, well, okay, you found Wolf, but you were going to figure that out in a winning season or not. You added zero young assets to the system. You got two guys in the mid-20s already getting paid in Frost and Fairby.
Starting point is 01:09:00 Maybe there's good players there. But like, they didn't sell Joel Hanley for an extra couple picks. They didn't move Rasmus Anderson with two playoff deadlines to sell. They were, they probably got too excited about thinking this is a playoff team. And yeah, they lost by a tie break. But were they really going to punch the jets in the mouth? both can be true and i think that is because when we when we we watch these two teams in the cup final we we want to be that we're we want to build towards that and then in the next breath it's
Starting point is 01:09:31 we were a tie break away from getting in and once you get in chipping the chair you never know what happens yeah and that is that can also and that was florida's team two years ago they they were they needed pittsburgh to lose to chicago in game 82 just to get in the flames had more points and missed in the west florida gets in bob gets hot after alice Alex Lyon starts the playoffs for them. And next thing you know, they're in the Stanley Cup final, first of three years in a row.
Starting point is 01:09:53 Chip at a chair. I like their talent better, though. I wonder how he ever goes feeling. Jubey? Yeah. Oh, big off season, lots to work on. He's been drafted by Florida,
Starting point is 01:10:05 there for a long time. He's sick to his stomach. I'll tell you. He gets sick to his stomach. He's absolutely sick to his stomach. This team is coming around. We've got a good team here. We trade you away and then become
Starting point is 01:10:16 one of the most talked-about teams in the last 30 years. Yeah, we can talk about tomorrow if the right team wins, but three years in a row in the final. They really, uh, seemed to cope without me okay. And by cope without me, I mean really, really, come on strong.
Starting point is 01:10:36 Weger, too, good player, but he's got to be thinking about that too, doesn't he? Damn it. They love it here, though. Saw that car, Weiger bought. Mountain. Mustang. Shit you. none of that humidity that gets annoying so hot down there right now no swath driving that stang down
Starting point is 01:10:56 it's a way drier in calgary know what it does the cars down there oh man rusts similar them all rust don't like that no rust here yeah let's get cracked windshield probably doesn't have AC in it right it's an older vehicle maybe you got an aftermarket put in but if it's got no AC and you're driving a late 60s mustang down there swass no good leather seats oh lucky break for weeks nice here in hindsight Yeah. Viena Nova. Speaking of rings.
Starting point is 01:11:28 Yeah, you're probably just no get your own. I wonder if the Pantera's called them about the rings for last year. Did Justin work on that file? I'm not sure. Okay. He'd be, he'd keep it very quiet if that was. Well, that's true.
Starting point is 01:11:40 I'm sure. Calgary's lab grown diamond specialist. The only store here in Calgary that specializes exclusively in lab grown diamonds. What are lab grown diamonds? Where are not digging them? I don't even like, who's doing it? Some hobos out there. Some prospector with some out there with those, one of those things.
Starting point is 01:11:57 That's gold. Yeah, he's out there swishing around some dish looking for. You don't swish for diamonds. He's out there swishing. You know who's not swishing is Justin from Vina Nova. He's great. He's great. Lab coat.
Starting point is 01:12:11 Fabricate. Clean, pristine, perfect diamonds. And the savings for lab grown up to 80% in a lot of cases. VenaNova.com is the website or you can check out there. education. They're brick and mortar, as they call it, in the biz. He was chatting with him the other day. Were you?
Starting point is 01:12:29 Very happy with the move. I bet. Market Mall? Good living at Market Mall. Good little food court there. High ceilings. I might. Yeah, he brought up something that was alarming to him.
Starting point is 01:12:43 Here in Calgary, at one of the educational institutions, children were encouraged to wear orange and blue. We talked about, you know, people met we're yelling about society back in our day, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, he's a good one. Orange and blue? Well, I think you could connect the dots.
Starting point is 01:13:07 A lab grown diamond has the same chemical composition and crystal structure as an earth mine diamond. Same hardness, light refraction as a natural diamond. Let's say you've got a budget. I've got X amount of dollars. I'm going to get an engagement ring or by the, you're going to get so much more diamond for your dollar. Tons more.
Starting point is 01:13:25 Yeah, your diamond dollars. stretched so far with Vina Nova, Venova.com, and yes, in Market Mall, still their brand spanking new location. And don't you worry about parking? So if you're thinking, I would love to go, but, you know, I've got my big duly pickup. You get there. Such a bitch to park. It'd really be tough downtown.
Starting point is 01:13:53 You fuel that some bitch up and you head over there. You parking however you want. Angle, parallel. show park as they call it. You know, to kind of do whatever you want. Vienernova.com. Oh, Jack.
Starting point is 01:14:15 Jack. Big exhale there. Is that a lot? That was a lot today. Did we just do like a week with the shows? How's your snooter? He was leaking. Yeah,
Starting point is 01:14:24 it was leaking last night. Jack, they did this show last night. Look like somebody had open heart surgery in the bathroom. God, bloody gauze and shit all over. The bio class.
Starting point is 01:14:35 We're going to come. Oh, my God, yeah. I hope that we have rubber glove and have hazmat suits in here. What happened? Cover up a crime scene here, Jack. Just a nose bleed. Just a nose bleed. Not good.
Starting point is 01:14:47 A lot didn't want to stop. Doctor says, stop having nosebleeds. I keep my finger out of there. That's the hard part. So delicious, hey, Josh. Starved. What is this dry? Those just so crunchy and crusty.
Starting point is 01:15:00 Yeah, see, Weeks loves that too. A lot of soft boogs down in Florida. Oh, way too drippy. Gross. Hey, when you haul them out, there's that drip. Not here. That melted cheeseburger. I got nothing to stay.
Starting point is 01:15:18 I just make things out. Time for the Pitter Report. It's presentation of Village Hodge. Located in the Northwest Automol, oh, village. Top secret. I know. There may or may not be a. There may be a swoosh tonight.
Starting point is 01:15:34 An unveil of some sort tonight of Village Honda. Or is it a Fump. both a fump and a swoosh. Swoosh. Yeah. Fump's the door and the swoosh is the. That's right. Unveal.
Starting point is 01:15:46 That's right. They present the Pinder report. It's a presentation of Village on it. All right. Pind, Rhyme.com. All right, Fells, Flames Nation.com. What are the writers writing about? Well, this one's going to sting a little on this day, especially. Top 10, 20 draft picks in franchise history.
Starting point is 01:16:04 Number 10. Have a night, son. Have a night. Matthew Kuch. Number 10, I could have been an oiler, but they really wanted that Poliarvi guy, eh? Olli, your levy went at five to make a couple.
Starting point is 01:16:17 Let's keep moving. A lot of UFAs, RFAs, FAs for the Niagara Flames. Bikes got them broken down. You can check it out there. Some organizational news yesterday as Peter Handlin, the longtime head of communications,
Starting point is 01:16:31 who was vice president, has moved to AGM. Hey, out of boy, Peter Hamlin. That's Pete. No, from those from afar saying, well, what the heck, a guy in communications, why is he going to hockeyups? It's happened before in the organization. It'll be Mike Burke did it. And also Al Coates back in the day, he started on the communications.
Starting point is 01:16:50 He's been there for eons. So good luck in the new role. Christ, he was there with Clark Wilming. Yeah, we'll keep moving. You want to talk prospects? We were doing a bunch of it last night. Byron Bader of Hockey prospecting. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:17:06 Ryan Pike in the middle and the loquacious one. The ever confident, my good. Great screen grab, Brian. Thank you. Looking good, Mike. I was waiting for the video to start. No, no. It's just that.
Starting point is 01:17:20 Keep moving. Next, next, next. Next. Now what this is. Today, 1 p.m. Craig Conroy. We don't get to hear their. Flames Nation. No, you don't know.
Starting point is 01:17:28 What? There is. It's coming up. He looks. Look at that screen grab is really stressed to me. It's like, boy, open and say too much there. guys, geez, my trouble, Pete, what's going on? You're good.
Starting point is 01:17:40 1 p.m., good chat. Tonight we got a hockey game, Red. You're GD. Right, we do, Ryan. Yeah, again, that fellow on the right. God bless them. Please, hockey gods, let that upstanding, lovable chap on the right, have a great night. Please, please, please, please, please.
Starting point is 01:18:00 Coach has had things to say about the game tonight. Start with the former Yankees. second baseman Chuck Knoblock. Our guys are resilient. That's been a term that's been used to describe these guys for a long period of time. Thanks, Chuck. It's got a palmerice. Good word.
Starting point is 01:18:18 I'm sure he's got to have to plan for his handshake routine tonight. That's the most dangerous team in the National Hockey League. When the risk profile changes, when they're down a goal or two, they are incredibly hard to handle, end quote. The data supports that team. Yeah. The data would back that up. That's what the data tells. Risk profile.
Starting point is 01:18:39 Odds tonight. Hey, little tail, let me latch, and like us. I'm on my heart and now. Pass around. Panthers minus 160. I love the black. Oilers plus 135.
Starting point is 01:18:49 You like that song? Yeah. Over has hit all five games. If I'm correct. Black Betty. Lamam a lamb. Oh, about better.
Starting point is 01:18:59 I'm a ram. It's like cotton. Joe. We showed you the cons my thoughts. What about the series itself, Jack? Those are the ones we have. Come on, Sam, do something tonight. Series could have been over if you didn't miss the net.
Starting point is 01:19:12 Panthers minus 360 to win the cup. Oilers plus 280. That is not tonight. That is the series. Let's hope it's tonight. Okay. Olympic teams, we walked you through a few of them yesterday. Oh, are they slow releasing the names of all the Olympians?
Starting point is 01:19:27 No, they're done the six names. They did do that two days. Yesterday. Yeah, really excited. Congrats. Congrats, Ketucks. Because then you can see it. That's right.
Starting point is 01:19:36 Overtime. No, here's the thing. This tournament's going to get off to a hectic pace. First, it's Czechia, then Switzerland and France for Canada. Talk about your big guns. This is so far away. I know. It's not fake to be interesting.
Starting point is 01:19:49 20, 10 months? Nine months. What are we dead by then? Jeez. We'll be dead by then. And the Americas can start with Latvia, Denmark, and Germany. Those powerhouses. So the chucks can just get more.
Starting point is 01:20:01 Whining? There's a lot of teams in the tournaments. It's the Olympics. Tonight, Canada, Honduras, the Gold Cup. It's in Vancouver. The next two games come up in Houston. What's Honduras known for, Ryan? Incredibly stiflingly sweaty, hot, humid weather,
Starting point is 01:20:17 and them turning the lights out on Canada when they played like eight years ago and they beat them six nothing. And bananas. Bananas, right? I didn't report on that. I like bananas. Where's Honduras? Honduras?
Starting point is 01:20:29 Oh, God. It's a couple Doris down from here. Oh, no, Jack. It's by the... Central America. Christ. it's by the dumpling place. Jack, do you know where Central America is?
Starting point is 01:20:39 What's not? Honduras. What's south of Mexico, Jack? That's when we're in the neighborhood, okay? That's your clue. Let's get some dumb shit. We just did. We just did.
Starting point is 01:20:51 It gets dumb. Don't worry. These doorbell camps sure catch a lot of interesting video. You shouldn't have these things on. Now, this is a guy. He's letting his dog out for a piss in the morning. Here we go. You've got to be fucking kidding.
Starting point is 01:21:07 Oh, God. Seriously? Come on, shit, brick. Come on, man. Come inside. Come on. I don't know. Dad did it again.
Starting point is 01:21:22 I sneezed. I did. Blue the brakes right off of that fucking pair. Oh, God. Blasted. The old sneeze shit, Dean. Hashtag. You got to be fucking kidding me.
Starting point is 01:21:42 I think he's fake. A lot of muscles being cleansed there. Yeah, it's a shuffle check. Either way, whatever, you know, the idea of the bid is good. We've been talking about getting some of that free money, some of that paid leave. Oh, God, this isn't quite it,
Starting point is 01:22:02 but how do we get in on this? A $75 million lawsuit from Marta Loop against the city of Calgary. We're here. What kind of losses and damages can we claim? Call me. Get Peter Clyde. Peter. We would like to be part of this.
Starting point is 01:22:16 Well, this is weird because I was told if you come from the East, you don't even know anything's happening. Must be a lot. Big a deal, could it be? Must be a lot of people. Yeah, because it's. There's no.
Starting point is 01:22:28 Is that what it was? Like, there's really no disruption at all. If you come from the one, come in on the one way. Take 33rd. Yeah, there's nothing. No problems at all. 75, eh?
Starting point is 01:22:38 Just a smooth 75 mil. I wonder what they would be. whining about or complaining or not enough pylons I'm hearing. They want to just safety. Yeah, we needed more
Starting point is 01:22:50 because you look at this photo. It's a good point. I mean, I spy something that is orange. It's going to be tough. Or not. We'll keep moving. Someone believes they can train
Starting point is 01:23:00 sharks to be pets. Let's see how that goes. Shark week's coming. Who's a good boy? It's not like this. What? You are. Yes, you are.
Starting point is 01:23:14 That's fake. I hope that's fake, Jack. Who's a good boy? Don't like that. Fake. You are. Yes, you are. Finally, it's a big game tonight.
Starting point is 01:23:29 So, is this also fake? This is real. Okay. Because the bigger the game, the bigger the tilts, apparently. This was game four in Edmonton. Gee.
Starting point is 01:23:39 Let him have it. I gave five in Empton. Excuse me. Yikes. I missed the beginning. Something must have been happening here. Banner came with the blonde hair. Oh,
Starting point is 01:23:49 I know. Jeez, pulling the hair. Sir. Sir, a boy headlock. Pulling hair choke. What's going on?
Starting point is 01:23:56 What's going on? You, bud. He's got a cinched in there, Dan. Yeah, he's got it on. It's locked under the chin. The chin.
Starting point is 01:24:05 It's locked in. Boy, that's weird, because they're all wearing the same color jersey. I thought they were sure. The security guys right there. Really. Well,
Starting point is 01:24:12 they were spread thin at this point, because it looks like the end of the end of the the game a lot of fights happening that's why we need another one can we see the wait to get up there can we see the grown man pulling the blonde lady's hair do we what are we doing here i assume it's a lady but you don't pull anyone's hair it's a richard move look at this it's over she's already hurt she's dropped to a knee we're trying to get out of here yank calmly walks over there what is going on yeah geez hippotech settle down they you know what i made a decision They don't deserve another home game this year.
Starting point is 01:24:49 Yeah, safety first, Ryan. I'm with you. I'm tired of seeing people get injured. I can't be seeing Karen's tapping out every intermission here because the oilers down a couple of goals. Come on. Smarting up, Edmonton.
Starting point is 01:25:00 You're better than this. The health care system is already strained. Strained. We can't, no. You know, some people get the tattoo of their, uh, so and so Stanley Cup champions. Yeah, I want this one. These people have like scars.
Starting point is 01:25:13 It's like, hey, what did that happen? Oh, yeah, that's my, uh, game five. to my game five. Jack, we make t-shirts of this potentially as soon as tomorrow. 2025. Now he doesn't have, so he's got it under the chin, but that hand needs to be on top there, I would say. He's got to lock it in right now, I think. Yeah. So, and he, it's interesting because Mr. Cardigan, Lance Armstrong is going at the hair puller. Yeah, Lance Armstrong's going at the hair puller, which I'm actually on his side, a bit here. Kind of not exactly live strong. If this guy passes out, everyone in the section is better off after his hair pulling pull.
Starting point is 01:25:46 shit yeah stop doing that you guys no no just stop it keep paddling never say die battle that one where you know it's just so positive and everyone's so friendly and you know it's just it's a cultural and it's just a great big family when that kid stuck his chin out and then let the guy sucker him it's not even a sucker because he was like yeah go ahead hit me you got listening for trains i missed that wasn't the guy for trains there's so many there is that like I think maybe at the end of the week, you could compile. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Because I know with the Moss Pit, they had the ladies tag team belts up the other night.
Starting point is 01:26:25 Is the two on two? There was that, yeah. Do you have to pay extra to go to the Moss Pit to see that? No, do you remember the guy was kind of standing there and he got poked and he went back and clunk his head? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, that's right. Anyway, hard on his back of his head. A little less pain and suffering.
Starting point is 01:26:40 Maybe we wrap this thing tonight. Come on, guys. That's a pin report on the game day. Villotronda. they still want to buy that pre-owned vehicle of yours. Damn right they do, Dean. You're maybe not even thinking about it. Well, you know what? Think about it.
Starting point is 01:26:54 Should. Give it some thought. Payment within 24 hours. No obligation. They're not going to be calling you and pestering you. Putting in rear naked chokes. They're not going to do it. No hair pulling?
Starting point is 01:27:10 Nope. None of that. It's all very above board. Hey, La Chal. The rear naked. Do you know how? It's hard. You need a tag team partner to come in.
Starting point is 01:27:19 You tap out and say you get out of it. You tap out and then they let you out of it. If anyone's got more of those clips, please send them in. Jack's got a lot of archives. I feel like we could do an hour a day on that stuff. Do you think, you know, kind of in the summer when things are a little quieter, we could just take the day off and say this is our show. The Euler Fight Cam.
Starting point is 01:27:41 Maybe I can host the show, Rhett. That work? Yeah. Screw off for a while. It works for me. When's the last time you've been in a fight? I think we talked about this not long ago, and I actually thought about this morning.
Starting point is 01:27:53 I will never fight again in my life. Yeah. I think I actually thought about this because I was, dreamt I was in high school and about to get in a fight right in the... Yeah. The Dukes were up. I've really been in one. I got clocked in the face outside of bar,
Starting point is 01:28:08 but I feel like you'd be a different person if you had. Yeah, I agree. Not to say that you're a guy that should have been beating. eaten up a time or two, but I feel like your tone and tenor would be a little different if you did get punched in the mouth a few times. I think what we really are mistaking is my incredible ability to weasel out of spots where I should be getting punched. Because I know what happens when you just take regular pinder and then add fuel. Oh, yeah. Right.
Starting point is 01:28:36 Yeah, yeah. It becomes a lot more punchable. It's toxic. People are throwing fists at us in Edmonton outside of a hockey game at the old rectal center, whatever they called it. You don't want to do that. No. You should come up. I'm good.
Starting point is 01:28:50 No, I don't, I think could you survive a fight? My fighting career is over. I've given up rollerblading as I told you. Here's the question though. You've made your way to the hippo tank and you're part of the band living it up. You're in trouble if you're on blue. Those are the ones going to be fights. And this happens.
Starting point is 01:29:08 What is there's self-defense, right? If somebody, if you got to stand up for yourself. But I can't imagine being in a setting where. I'm so angry at you right now over something you've said. Me outside. Let's go. Where are we going? Was the hot dogs?
Starting point is 01:29:25 Hot dog cart? What are we going outside? 99 challenge. What? My round of yours? 999 challenge? What? Sports team that I cheer for.
Starting point is 01:29:34 What are you? What could? What did? Jack, if we could use AI and some people that know data or data, and we could. find those folks, I would love to get in touch with a few of the people that have been duking it out. Just to understand, okay, what was the...
Starting point is 01:29:54 I hope Karen the blondes okay. Where was the tipping point? Where was the tipping point? What? Who decided to Chuck first and why? Like that clip there, we need context. Yes. But it feels like that looked like a tame situation.
Starting point is 01:30:11 These aren't, and they're not kids. where blondeie did not need to get her hair pulled. I wish that video started sooner because I do feel like we're missing something important. None of that made sense when we saw it. Although none of it really ever does make sense. No, none of it does make sense. But it would be interesting because these are adults, aren't they? Oh, these are grown adults, yes.
Starting point is 01:30:30 If there's such a thing up there. Karen the blonde is trying to just recover from some sort of a blow. And then look at this vicious hair pull. What kind of a loser are you? Just slowly slid over there and was like, I am going to. This is my chance. Thank goodness Lance was there. I've always wanted to pull this lady's hair.
Starting point is 01:30:45 What are you doing? Cackie's on. I wonder if the guy in Cahikis is he works for the oilers or something. It's not dressed like the other ones. What's going on above? There's another take down there. That looked like a front. Jeez.
Starting point is 01:31:03 Yeah. Yeah, like in the roll up from Caki. The girl in the key. There's someone on hands and knees. What's going on there? Got him in the headlock there or something. Yeah, that could be, who knows. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:31:15 Well, they do say it's a blue jackets. Quite a vibe of the Hippo tank. What a spot. What a town. What a night. I want this tattoo. Is this included with the exorbitant price of the ticket, or do you have to go earn this? Is this how you get 20 bucks off if you promise to fight?
Starting point is 01:31:42 What's the deal? Well, I think that there's a greater likelihood of that happening. The more of those $20 beers that you have, that you have or whatever they got up there. Not sure how that works. If you are, hey, listen, there is a hockey game tonight. And maybe rather than watching it in the comfort of your own home, maybe you'd like to go out somewhere and check it out.
Starting point is 01:32:03 You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. Everybody's a Greta. They're doing it. It's not a 9-99 this time. Jack? You don't have to eat five hot dogs. You have to stop at five and a half, Jack?
Starting point is 01:32:14 You just have one. Whatever. Maybe a third of a dog, whatever dainty amount you like. There you go. Sound up. Game atmosphere, good buddies, no, just good, good people. Free hugs. Look at that Jersey.
Starting point is 01:32:27 You get a free hour of gaming. Look at that. Easy, red. What? Careful. This vision's slowly going away. Settle. So there you go, Greta.
Starting point is 01:32:39 Text the word. What is it, Greta? What are how Casey's doing? He will be a bag of nerves. Yeah, he will be. Just on edge. Jack and I ran into a few. Well, they're every.
Starting point is 01:32:50 On edge where there's fans. You know what? As a word of caution for our good pal here, who we truly care about. Yeah, kind of. You best shut up when you run it into those folk because they're taking it real serious, apparently. And I'm not convinced that you're. Yeah. You want now, Jack might have your back, but.
Starting point is 01:33:11 I don't want my teeth to get knocked at a show the Pinto report yesterday, the Blue J's, Jose Perrios. This is a pet shark. Is this AI or is this real, boys, rat? Back to you. She's a huge snake. So the kangaroos got these huge fangs. What a story that would be. So Jack and Pinder decided to go to Greta last night.
Starting point is 01:33:38 And yeah, there's a bit of some facial growth over here. Swelling, swallet, blue. A twist of the coloration. Not so much here. Or here, but we worked with a guy who oddly was an oiler fan back at the old barn. Really? And he came to work one day and did have the not so much here or here, but right here going. So what?
Starting point is 01:34:07 And the story was he was lying on his couch in the basement watching TV, got up to go wherever and tripped on his blanket and fell down and hit his head. Oh, right. It's like, weren't you out on Steve and Ave doing a bunch of booze and the game was on, weren't you? It's a convenient story. No, no. No, I was. No, I tripped on my blanket in my basement at home. It was my oilers blanket.
Starting point is 01:34:35 It got all tangled. Sure, you did. That happens a lot. I can't tell you how many times a day I trip over my blankets at home. Maybe next time takes some Manko with you. That's right. Anyway, good stuff. Now, we've got some Bet365.
Starting point is 01:34:53 We kind of showed the Bet365 earlier. Showed to some months. But we got a little bit more because there is. Cut a couple tonight. And I'll tell you what, I went to the app before the start of the show. They have got a ton of stuff on there for this game tonight. Wide range of markets. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:35:05 So they've got the whole your usual game action. But for it, special tonight. There's some specials. Some specials. Spashals in there. Get into the action for the Stanley Cup playoffs. If Bet 365, they got you. Still got the game props, player props, totals, money line.
Starting point is 01:35:18 even the Stanley Cup champ be a con smyth winner whatever your bet is it's never ordinary at bet three six five download the app get in in the game official partner of the Stanley Cup playoffs must be 19 or older now what's been working really well for the Florida panthers scored in the first period so we've got two bets on the right
Starting point is 01:35:35 panthers to be leading by one or more at the 10 minute mark that's happened a fair amount panthers to be leading after 20 minutes that's been happening all the time on the other side the rat parley could Chuck Bennett Marchand all brought in by Bill Zito all rats all dirt under their nails
Starting point is 01:35:53 all playoff performers all having a great series let's get the rat combo plus 300 there you go and that's for the game that's not period or just tonight points one point each is that you like the rat pack
Starting point is 01:36:07 red I love the rat there you go there you have it I'd love to see one of them get an empty better boy I love those are important to trigger that yeah honestly This spring's really taught me a lot about I'm two-nighters. Dean especially leading the charge, but my fondness and my love of them continues to grow. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:36:26 I love that one the other night. That's good one. Long distance too, eh? Good aim. Brad Marchand. What a guy. What a player. What a guy.
Starting point is 01:36:35 God, he's lovable. Yeah. I mean, we love Sam, right? Just that's natural. But something about that Marshan guy. Great guy. such a good guy you look like you want good things
Starting point is 01:36:50 to happen to good people can I do that yeah I'll do the uh just I'll do a little super chat throughout the course of the show if you made a donation
Starting point is 01:37:05 you put a comment in the YouTube thing we'll show it right now and then take that money that you donated generously and send it to the youth centers of Calgary nice thing about Marchandis he's loved everywhere
Starting point is 01:37:14 he yeah how don't you beloved yeah how don't you Tom the trucker fellas with egan's and coylers fans are so annoying. No, I'm not quitting meat and dairy.
Starting point is 01:37:29 And no, I'm not cheering for the G.D. Soilers, Fafas, go cats. You see how much money you put that? Nine, uh, it was nine dollars and, um, that's a hell of a comment. Appreciate you, Tom. Well done, Tommy. Vegans.
Starting point is 01:37:47 You what you want. Sure for who you want. Not quitting meat and dairy. R&B, 699.99, how great would Marchand look in a Flames jersey in the Battle of Alberta for eight and a half per year for three years? Let's go Panthers. Where the yellow and Boston, a bit of red in Florida. How would those two together look and can't? I mean, yeah. You'd look good anywhere, I'd be honest. I think in 10, I don't know. I don't like blue and him go along well. I think he likes the way he looks in Panther colors. Yeah, I'd agree that. That blue would give him a smurfy type of. Don't need too much. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:38:24 No good. It would be King Silver. Sure. It will be an interesting of all that you talk about Bennett's contract and what's the Marner thing going to be. What's this guy going to do? Well, his Eilers and Eagland and all of a sudden say, well, why aren't we talking about this
Starting point is 01:38:35 guy more? Kind of had a monster playoffs. Because he's horseshit in Boston. It's pretty good. He's hurt for a long time. Playoffs. It's really good. Playoffs.
Starting point is 01:38:46 R&B back in, 279. The oiler greaser stain ends tonight. Go Panthers. what that means. Oh, it's just, you know what it is? I just think it's, I got more shit to say. Okay.
Starting point is 01:39:01 Yeah. I'm here for it. Okay, go path. That's boy R&B. Mm. Do you send that? Jack Bauer, $2. Why is Rett's wife the shoveler?
Starting point is 01:39:10 Hell, she got to do with anything. I never heard about my wife. Jack. Bauer. Jack, you keep your hands off his wife. What's what? Hey, Jack, may you tell us about your wife? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:39:20 Send us a pick. Two bucks? That's, I mean, I can't say. I can't. What you say? No, two bucks. He doesn't get the answer.
Starting point is 01:39:29 Kids deserve better than that. Al Goss, 890. You have spoken of how Kipper's elite play covered warts and kept us mediocre for years. With that in mind, is the best path to trade Dustin Wolf.
Starting point is 01:39:45 Finally, we have the answer. Thank you, Al. I'm texting again. Because if you get rid of Wolf, then you'll be really bad. will be bad. I do agree with that part. We should have traded Keper. He's an absolute pain in the ass. Screwed us.
Starting point is 01:40:00 Yeah. Screwed everybody. Screw the flames. I'm tired. Did they really put his number in the rafters after all that shit he did for the tent? What did he do? Jerk. I know what you're saying, though, Al.
Starting point is 01:40:10 If you want to, if you want to top three pick, you've got to be bad. And if you want to be bad, you probably need some s. Bad goaltending. Bad goaltending is huge for that. I think you probably remind Al that Boston's picking seven, Nashville's picking five. Those are teams that we would have had real high in the old caliber of goaltending list at the start of the year. Crazy things happen. You can probably trade Dustin.
Starting point is 01:40:30 Elias Sorokin's team is picking one. Don't trade dust off. I'd hang on to him. Ballock racing. $50. Wow. Great show, as always. Haven't been able to bring myself to get hoofed in the pecker yet.
Starting point is 01:40:47 If there's a game seven, in-laws are doing a coiler watch party. Is it in good taste? to wear my flames Warner jersey I got when I was 12. Might be a tight fit. I don't know what game sevens. I want you comfortable. You wear what you want, but yeah. Hoofed in the pecker.
Starting point is 01:41:06 I don't know that you, we don't want you to get hoofed in the pecker. I thought he was talking about a vasectomy in the beginning. And beyond that, I don't want you to have to wear a jersey to a game seven or any of that. Focus on tonight. You do you. Get down tonight.
Starting point is 01:41:18 I mean, in-laws, I'll tell you what the oilers and the Panthers aren't doing. They're not looking past tonight. No, one of the time. Dial it in. Dial it in BR. Focus.
Starting point is 01:41:30 Thank you for that. Anytime you wear a Warner jersey. That donation, that's a big one. Now, we had a late one come in the other day, Jack. Yeah, a late one. You can send Super's after the show ends. So this guy did that. I think this was also the day that we couldn't end the show because the Russian bots got us.
Starting point is 01:41:46 Right. That's right. That was crazy. People got Super. It shows already over. 10 bucks. John Ten Bean. Hey, boys.
Starting point is 01:41:55 Always enjoy listening to your show as I'm working in the fields of good old Jim Alberta. My question today would be for Rhett as a former player. I have never gotten why these athletes with the best training and nutritional resources available have such a hard time putting in 15 to 20 minutes of their absolute best every three days. As a farmer, pretty used to putting in 18 hour days. Simply cannot wrap my head around why. When you're competing for a Stanley Cup, it's that difficult to just.
Starting point is 01:42:22 Just give it your absolute best. I simply don't believe fatigue should be a factor after three days rest. Thanks for the great show, boys. Almost every day. Go, uh, Fantters. Panthers. Big Phantars guy.
Starting point is 01:42:37 Yeah. Panthers? Fantors. Maybe, maybe I don't know. Panthers. Fantarros? Maybe that H is in the wrong spot. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:42:44 The Pharaohs? Some jack spelling there. Seriously. Major jack punctuation in there. And I appreciate the great show almost every day. Oh, weekends. We don't have shows on the weekend. You know that.
Starting point is 01:42:55 So what's the deal with you, freaking lazy out? Every three days, you can't. It's all that radiation, Dean, when you're going up and down, the plane and the flying. Because most people have like a nine to five.
Starting point is 01:43:06 They'd work like eight hours, a five days of week. You guys have like a one hour game, like three times a week and you can't work harder? Yeah, the Panthers had the Arkells or something playing of the Opsi or Praxon for the game one. It was in the Muffington.
Starting point is 01:43:19 Yeah. It's a lot to overcome. this, uh, you know the thing with that bad is they're not the arc, it's just Arkells. It's kind of annoying. And you know what? It's not the ice district. It's ice district. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:43:33 Good fit for those two. I guess so. It's like poop going right back into the. There's no excuses, John. They should be able to show. You're right. Also, I've been around farmers. Well, they may put it in an 18 hour day.
Starting point is 01:43:49 Yeah. A lot of sandwiches. A couple of beers here. A lot of lunches, coffees. Dranking your sports talk podcasts. I see you working in Jem, Alberta. 20 days off there in December. We go check on the fence poles today.
Starting point is 01:44:05 Yeah, you're doing a lot of frozen, all right. Soil testing in January out in gym. Know what you're doing out there? Yeah, still frozen. There's tests over. Yep, come back tomorrow, I guess. Still under the ice. Check it again.
Starting point is 01:44:16 We love you, John. Okay, so tomorrow, earlier show. What? Yeah. we talk about this uh we're talking about right now you got somewhere to be rent i got so much on the go check he's so busy giving away yeah it'll back you up to do uh earlier show but again i don't know that's going to impact anybody because if you just if you come in at your normal time and it's oh shit it's already started you just started it's not like it's the 80s it's like i'm
Starting point is 01:44:44 missing half of the dukes of hazard i wonder what happened no you just backed back it just just play at the beginning bag it up damn bad boo Back it up. It'll be there for you. Because we've got, my thinking is probably some insults to hurl at the origin golf tournament. Yeah, we're going to do some heckling there. I was going to get one of those loud things.
Starting point is 01:45:06 Oh, the megaphones. Yeah, I had one of those ones that people did not like that. Just kind of right in somebody's back swing. Let them know that they got some swass going. We'll be out doing that tomorrow. The dark new neck. So we'll be, and no noodles because he's flying somewhere. We get him Thursday.
Starting point is 01:45:25 It's perfect. I hope he gets to go home, eh? Yeah, that'd be nice. Boy, he traveled a lot this year. So much flying. A lot of miles. He doesn't need any more flights. He's got a lot of radiation red.
Starting point is 01:45:32 He gets to get back home so he can work harder. So no noodles, early show, but it will be game six reaction. And 1 p.m. today, Conroy, you, myself, debuts on Flames Nation. That's right. Here's a little taste of said conversation. See you, buddies. So I guess a lot of the conversations we've had is very, very big picture and this fan base is having. And it's like, okay, you're watching the Oilers and the Panthers play.
Starting point is 01:45:59 It's like, is this a team that's a few tweaks or free agent ads away from being in that level? Do you have to tear it down to the strips? Is there a healthy middle ground? And there might not be more of like an indicator of where this organization will go than with how you deal with Rasmus Anderson. What are the conversations been like? Because clearly on July 1, you can choose to extend them. He's got one year left on his deal. But you and Rasmus as parties have to be at least close on numbers.
Starting point is 01:46:28 So what are the conversations been and how do you sort of move forward? Because one path is keeping a veteran and the other is potentially moving him for younger assets. Yeah. I mean, and that's the biggest thing. I mean, even when at the end of the season, kind of when he left, he wanted to just take a mental break. not talk about any of this so yeah so now you know over the last week we've reached out to them and now we've started the dialogue so it's the beginning of the process we definitely have a term and number that we like and they have a term and number they like and and that's where it kind of you know it begins
Starting point is 01:47:04 but you know that's that's part of the process and it's uh it i think it'll kind of you know i think when you're looking how this this goes it will determine you know a little bit of what path we're going to go down you know so it's it's never easy and rasmus has been unbelievable i mean the way he played with the you know the broken leg and and to do what he did you know to try to get us in i mean he's been an ultimate team guy for us and we love him but again it's a business too and it has to work for both sides so you know we'll continue to see where we're at with the with the two of us and move from there
