things are getting intense... | special forces episode 4
00:00Special Forces, episode four.Let's go.We're doing it, baby.We are doing it.This one felt intense. We had some vomit, some tears, some drama. My goodness, I love it all.A lot of tears.
00:14But I would say, as a viewer, I'm noticing we're hitting the point in the seasonwhere the DS have weeded out like the initial drop-offs, right? The initial VWs.Now you've kind of got a crew that's really trying to stick it up.out. That's right. And now they're poking. They're pushing. They're like, let me find each person's,I don't want to say weak spot, but weak spot, you'll hear the DS start talking about,oh, this guy might have a temper. Let's poke and see if we can provoke it. And this one looksa little scared or timid. Let's see if she can be brought to the leadership front. And how does she
00:53handle that? Do you think that's cruel or inspirational? I think it could be cruel. I think that. I thinkthey use it in a beneficial way.You think their intentions are to be inspirational?Yes.Okay.I agree.I think the whole point of the show is how far can we push you? What can we find?
01:14And are you going to quit because of what we find?Or are you going to listen to what we have to say, make it better, and go on to be a betterperson? Not to be too philosophical at the top of this episode.but people have this saying,we're going to find out who you really are.Yes.And through exhaustion or fatigue,
01:36like, are you going to be irritable? Are you going to be worn out?Are you going to tap out?And I think you could interpret that sayingas find out who you really areand pretty much bring the worst out in you. It's like what's the ugly side of you?But I think there's another way you could go about it
01:55and say, okay, yeah, every human gets, exhausted and and fatigued and irritable and at the end of their rope, as they say. But are you able toseparate yourself from that? And are you really the person who's able to deal with exhaustion in arespectful way, to deal with conflict and relationships in a respectful way as opposed to areactionary way? And so I don't think it's always like the cruel interpretation. And to the show'scredit, I feel like they're more trying to find out who you really are in.you that there's another way to do it than just the base, you know, animalistic, oh my gosh,
02:35I'm done, get me out of here kind of way.I also think they do such a beautiful job.And this is what they do for a living. They profile people. They're training people to become the elite of the elite, right? But I think they do such a beautiful job at finding whatever this is.You know, so for me, a big one was not knowing how to like have any type of emotion or human.I was just a robot.
03:03But then you pair that with the interviews that they do and they want to find out why.Why are you like this?Where did this start and how can we move on from here? And I think they want to help you find out why.For sure.If you haven't had the awareness about that yourself. They also, if you start watching the cadence of the show, I think they're doing a really, really, really good job at character development this season, probably better than they've ever done.
03:28But each episode, they pretty much choose two characters or cast members or recruits to showinterviews and storylines, like give the background. So this one was about Candice Cameron Burey and ColinGosselin. And you could tell from the beginning of the episode, it's like this is one of theirbig character development moments where they're going to show their interview and their story andlike what the DS are really working on from them. That's right. So, diving into the episode. We start, they all wake up, and I thought it was fascinating.
04:00At the very beginning, you see a conversation between Maracio and David.Yeah.And they're like, we're four nights in.You know what that means? We got four nights to go.I was like, these suckers.Eight days.Got eight days.
04:14I mean, they are in the jungle, so it looks way worse. But I was like eight days. That's right.Well, that's less than.I would be curious to know.how many days each season was.I know. I mean, they're alleight to...
04:30Eight to twelve? I think the very first seasonthey did two weeks. I wonder what causesthe difference. Maybeit's just the attrition thathappens, you know? Yeah.We kind of find out quickly it's going to bethe Candace episode. You can kind of startseeing who are they including for the
04:46narration of the episode. We found out thatCandace and Oliver did a movie together.Yeah. So there'ssome previous relationships there. Wehad not romanticsorry yeah sorry we hadwe had previous friendships yeah with thedeckers
05:00Cobb kind ofkind of which I would sayis helpful it isit's helpful you have someone to lean onthat's rightand then we found out that Colinwas with the Marines for about11 weeks yep
05:16and he said he might have a small edgebecause of that and then it cuts to theDS saying that today's about leadershipyeah and how are youyou under different types of pressure.Do you perform and shine, or do you collapse?I actually thought this one was fascinating.I thought there was a really good storyline.
05:34It made a lot of sense. You start seeing Candace at the beginning, say something about how she's 50 years old.I think she's now a grandma. And she said her entire life, she's just stayed in her comfort zone. And so this is like a whole, I guess, like new chapter of her life, wanting to push outside of her comfort zone and find her things. Is she a grandma?Yeah.
05:57No way.She is a grandma. That's crazy. And then Colin's whole side of like the marine life is this story of he was searchingfor a family, just like someone to feel really bonded with because he said he felt veryalienated by his family. So they kind of like developed that story. And they did their first water bottle check in Bergen Jack.
06:17Bro.Do you remember this?Oh my gosh.Okay.So they say orientation, like the first couple hours you're there, have your water, have yourcanteen filled to the very top at all times. And when they mean top, they mean like there's a bubble on top. It's got to be like bubbling over the edge.
06:35We got checked a couple times over our course.I'll never forget the first one though. So I was sitting there and like I was, I think I was a second or third person in line. And I think the first person next to me had a very full canteen, but it's maybe a centimeteroff the lip. Literally. And so I gave mine a quick squeeze just to have the water look like itstopped and I'm trying to hold it as steady as possible. I did the same thing. And they're going by there. And if you don't have it to the top, they poured over your head. We had to get a beasting.Yeah, we did beastings. They just got yelled at, but maybe that's because it's a first check.
07:07Or we didn't see a beasting. You never know. That's right. You never know. And then you kind ofsee Colin beating himself up about it. But yeah, Q says day four and we're already slipping back.It is, we've said this before, but like the hypervigilance, the psychological stress that you go through to, they tell you, I don't know, 20 different things that you have to have.Your burgundy has to weigh this much.Your water boss, be this full.Make sure you have your shirt tucked in.You have to have X, Y, Z in your pockets at all time. You got to make sure you have a buddy system.
07:39Make sure you have your forks and all the things. And it's like, it's so simple, but you don't want to mess it up.So in my mind, I'm just constantly circling, like, even as I'm laying in bed, I'm like, do I have this?Do I have that?Do I have this? And you just never get the mental relaxation of, yeah, we're good. It's like, frick, just lay down, but I got to go fill up my water bottle or whatever. For speaking like this, I got so frustrated with you on our season because your hypervigilance was like,
08:07you would never tuck in your freaking shirt or wear your belt or lace your boots.because I was wreckedand I'm likebut I'm stressed about itand I'd be like babetie your shoesyou're like it's fineI'm like it's not freaking fine
08:23we're all gonna get a beebecause of your freaking booI never made the team paybecause of thatI was always dialed inwhat I needed to bejust because my stylegave me stress
08:32so they go back inyou can kind ofthey're painting this picturelike ColinColin is rubbing peoplethe wrong wayyeah because they saidOliver said
08:43snapit's it's hard when someone's snapping you all the time for the little things which when he startsgoing into the story you wonder if that's just like his upbringing his he has like you could tell he haslike this perfectionist mentality of yeah he's always got to be perfect and he really like beats himselfup when he's not um but he was he was always constantly they show like many clips of Colin beinglike make sure you do this make sure you do that and yeah he seems like he's coming across on screenanyways. It looks like he's trying to be helpful, but it does sometimes come across as likemicromanaging controlling. So what is it? That in some ways probably different style, but Cody
09:24was similar on our season. Yeah. It's like you're trying to be helpful, but it's in a, it's notthe right context or it's not necessary. Overbearing. So what's the line? I don't know. We've talked about this as we've parented through the young ages of kids. It's like, I, yeah, what's the line of being, hey, I'm here to help you.Yeah.Versus this is too much and stop, you know?I truly don't know the answer to that. And I feel like my first reaction is just like the vibe.
10:00Like noticing having a social awareness to understand when someone needs help versus when someone is doing something differently. And how do you address it and vocalize it in a way that meets a person where they're at?Is it like make sure that the feedback is two-way and it's balanced?Like, hey, if I'm the one who's always talking about snapping at the little thingsand no one else is doing it, maybe I should stop and wait for there to be a little morebalanced.Even Colin going around and like aggressively making sure everyone's water bottle is filled. It's helpful and it's good.
10:35It's like needed. It is, but maybe doing like a, hey, I'm filling my water bowl up.Anybody want theirs filled up?know, like a, I don't want to say passive-aggressive, but. It's like a gentle reminder.Yeah.That's fascinating.I want to kind of dig into what does it mean to be helpful versus over-bary?
10:53Also, I would love to know that answer from the DS, like, within a military unit. What is considered overbearing? Is it just like the rapport that you're able to have?So you could be, because who would, who would you say was like commanding, but everyoneand respected it and it wasn't too much in our season. On our season? This episode is sponsored by Skims.I have a very specific test for clothes now.
11:22Can I sit cross-legged on the floor with kids? Can I stand up when the doorbell ringsand can I still feel like I'm wearing an actual outfit? That's a much tougher test than it sounds. Our house can go from cozy morning to school drop-offto somebody arriving at the front door all in about 30 seconds.Exactly.That is why I love the Skims' Cotton Jersey Strait.
11:42leg pant. The fabric is soft and stretchy, but the straight leg fit feels polished enough that I do notneed to change before leaving the house. So these are not pants that only work while no one can see you.Exactly. I can wear them while playing with the kids, recording the podcast, running errands, or traveling.Skims also has cotton jersey, cotton rib, lightweight cotton and everyday cotton pieces so you canfind the fabric and fit that feels best on you. Please shop Skims, Cotton, and all of my favorite piecesat skims.com.And after you place your order, please select podcast in the survey
12:16and choose our showfrom the drop-down menuso they know that we sent you.Was it kind of a balanced?Cobb?Yeah, Randall.Randall always came acrossvery assertive,
12:29like, yo, everybody, let's not mess up this water bottle thing, but everybody,he was just so kind and gentlein how he did it,even though it was,I don't know.So he didn't come.
12:43from like a hey I'm telling you this because I'm in an elevated position than you it's moreof a hey let's all make sure we do this but I don't know the semantics there like how you actuallydo that and why did he get away with it but Cody didn't on our season good food for thoughtyeah for thought but then we move into the hostage rescue hostage rescue you guys even on our seasonthat was by far the hardest because it's it's the most like vague yeah which understandably rightIf you're in a real hostage rescue, they said that's like the worst case scenario to ever be in.You're looking for something you don't know where it is and how to, like, for sure.My notes for this were exactly the same.
13:23It's like, we know it's a hostage rescue, but we don't really know the mission. And honestly, I think that what we saw on TV was probably all of the information that the recruits got.For sure.I bet Rudy or somebody told an actual story about when they had to rescue a hostage, which is always awesome. And for some reason, those don't usually make the final cut.But then it's not like they tell you how many hostages. You don't know. You don't know which buildings.
13:49You hear all the people talking about, hey, this is an order we're going to go in.I'm going to be in the front, middle back. That doesn't really matter at the end of the day.Like it's fun to game playing, but you don't know what situation you walk into. You see, you also don't know the route. You see one team coming out of a creek. You see another team walking around a field. And you don't get to see the lead up to like being in the building.
14:09It's just like overwhelmed. It's like sweet hostage rescue.Well, there's a big.Aillion things that could go into that.I also remember thinking in my head in every challenge that we are put in,that they're truly trying to test us.So everything that they told me, I would be like,I bet there was something else.
14:29You know, I would overthink it so much that instead of following a very direct course line, like they said, because you would always get reamed like, could you not see the other stuff going on?I would try to go into like complete wrong building. And he's like, I told you that one.I'm like, did you actually mean it?But that's super helpful in certain missions.
14:50Uncertain missions. In other missions, it's like, no, it's pretty simple. This is all you have to do, you know? But in my head, I'd be like, but are you telling you the truth?Yeah. And also, you know, they show Billy being involved in kind of the usher for the firstcouple groups. And it just brought me back to like, it's crazy.
15:09You're sitting there. You don't know when you're going to go.the Billy comes and grabs you from the carand you're jumping right into it.He's like, hey, stay quiet, stay low, come with me.And then all of a sudden, you walk up to a buildingand he's yelling at you and there's bombs and explosives. It's like, what is going on?
15:23It is so funny because you watch the showand you're like, I know they're not in a real hostage situation, right? But it feels so real. The way Billy and Foxy and Rudy and Q are all like, there are masters at this because as they're yelling at you and hyping the situation up,your adrenaline is at like 5,000.And you're like, I'm actually trying to find a freaking hostage.Yeah.
15:56And also I don't know what the mission is.Like how are we doing this? What do we do?So they separate this hostage rescue into three leaders. And this is the first task of, you know, can someone step up?Can they direct a group? Can they, you know, organize a mission? Can they keep a brave together, keep the mission front of mind?
16:15And so the first one to go up is Hannah, I think. We find out that she doesn't really like being a leader. She kind of loses her team on the front end.Yeah.And I would also just like to say that searching rooms is way harder than it seems. It's so hard. It's like there's blankets and paraphernalia and beds and closets. And you're like, it looked like they're in this whole kind of apartment complex hotel.
16:36And there's 80 doors. And you're like, well, which one do we go?We have five minutes. You're trying to just rifle through it all quick. But I remember for me, this is the one that I completely failed at.And I was paired with Cody because I got locked in on this idea like I have to find them, the thing, whatever it was we're looking for.And Cody was locked in on, we only have so much time.So even as the time's leaving, Cody left me.
17:06But I was like so locked in.I didn't even hear that there was something happening. You guys got ripped.I've never seen that or felt that. And you were pissed. That was about as piss as I've seen you be.That was so pissed. That was a tent situation there.
17:21So Hannah goes in.She has a hard time with the leadership role. You can see her kind of getting frazzled.Oliver is taking over.At one point, Hannah takes her teamand two hostages that they found and just leavesbecause the time is out, while Oliver and Maricio are actually still searching for a third hostage and they find them.
17:45But they're left in the building as the rest of the team goes. And this is just one of those situations where you see Billy at the end be like, that was atrocious. It's the worst of her scene. But it is worth noting. And this was really clarifying for me where so Hannah did it that way.She left the building with some of the hostages.Later on, another.
18:08team brought the hostages from room to room to room and they got ripped for it.Yep.And so my note on the leadership front was like, is there a right way to do this? No.Is there a wrong way to do it?Yeah.I don't know, actually. It's like it's all about knowing you're non-negotiable.
18:28So like in this situation, let's try to keep everybody safe.Right? That would probably be the non-negotiable.And then making decisions with reasoning and having high conviction that you,you can stand behind and bear the yelling of why did you do this? I can't believe that. And if you'reable to, if you're able to sit in that and know with conviction in your heart that like, this iswhy I made the decision and I'm standing by it, that's almost, it seems like what they're lookingfor where it's like they're going to yell at you no matter what. For sure. I think they're truly trying
19:03to test the leadership role and like, do you lead? Do you have a plan? Can you execute the plan? Can you execute theplan. Can you stand by it? Can you answer the questions? Because like I said at the beginning of this,we're in this phase of the season where they want to rattle you. Like they genuinely are now pickingspecific people to put at the front and test them and rattle them and get in their face.Go ahead. Well, because they want to see can you come back from it? Yeah. And what does it mean toget rattled? It's like, well, you're questioning yourself. Now you're doubting yourself. Now you feelinsecure. Oh my gosh, I did this wrong. But it's like, that's why it's really an internal thingwhere you're like, no, I'm not rattled because I feel now there's a line. Like you don't want to be
19:52above reproach or not be able to take feedback. For sure. Like you need to listen. But in the heat ofthe fire, it's like stand by your choices. But you also have to be able to digest, reflect, analyze, move on. Yeah. So Hannah goes, next one up is.David Charvet. That's right.Well, they showed a couple scenes here.Question that I think was in a previous episode, comment.Do they really blow up the buildings?
20:20If you have more than one child, you know that getting everyone to agree on what to watchcan become a full family negotiation. That's one reason we love Minow. There is enough variety for different ages, personalities, and moods, but everything still lives inside the same faith-filled world. One child might want veggie tales or Bibleman.Another might choose young David or God's greenhouse.
20:44And there are hundreds of shows and devotionals to explore. The kids feel like they have real choices and we are comfortable with every choice they are choosing between.Minow also has more than 100 hours of audio including Bible stories, kids podcasts, faith-filled adventures, and music. So if one kid wants to watch and another would rather listen or we simply want a screen break, we have both options in the same app.The audio works with screen off listening, car play, and Android audio, which has been especially helpful in the car or during quiet time.Minno helps turn an ordinary moment into a shared faith experience without making it feel forced.Find something the whole family can agree on.
21:22Go to gomino.com and start your free seven-day trial today. That's G-O-M-I-N-O.com to start your free seven-day trial today.Because it shows the overhead shot. They don't actually destroy the video. They don't destroy the building, but they do explosives.Yeah, it's pretty crazy to see, which is fun.But also, they showed the scene of Billy throwing David off during the boxing.Yeah.
21:47The whole thing is just so absurd that you would be able to, like, whoever does that in any situation with the, you know, this guy's a celebrity or whatever. It's like, they're just manhandling you out there. They have to, though. It is, it is such a wild experience because they are taking you to your, like, red line limit where, like, you have never felt that a great.progression before. You've never felt that adrenaline before. You've never been in the redmist, as Billy would say, where you're so blinded by rage or excitability or whateverthat you can't see straight. And then the DS being in such high coaching positions, they're so aware of this in such a real form that they can probably see very quickly,
22:30oh, he's getting out of control. It's crazy. And they might put you to the limit though. On purpose. Yeah. But they were.want to see if you can control it. And to see, we alreadytalked about this, to see Billy manhandle a manlike that, I was like, that dude's a beast.Just tossed him like a sack of potatoes.Without even trying. So David Charvey goes up. They talk about him.
22:48They're curious if he has a short temper. And I think that's something they're going to likefocus on and try pushing. So he goes in.And I thought it was interesting. They show a line wherehe ended up finding two hostagesand then leaving and they made it in time. But they were like,
23:05where's the third hostage? And he's like, I really thought you said too.No, they never said any number. We don't know this.We weren't shown that they were to hold three.But.Do you remember when we did the hostage carry through the freaking village where we weregetting wrecked and there was an explosiveness?
23:22And we had to carry this guy who weighed 270 pounds with a sharp edge sled. That was hot as balls. We had one hostage and they didn't tell us there was another one.You know what I'm saying?Yeah. And then everyone got ripped. For sure. But I do think it was interesting that in this scenario,
23:42the best case scenario is to be like, I messed up.I didn't see a third, right? It's not to say, I thought you only said two. That's like defensive to a DS.And it points a finger back at them, you're saying?Yes.Interesting.And I think that's something that they'll probably push on later,
24:01which brings us to the third leader.I've also never, with David's team, they walked back through room to room to find the third hostage.I've never seen them walk back in.Billy was pissed. They never do that. They never like you get one chance at seeing the chorus and then you're done. It's like American Ninja Warrior in that sense where it's like you don't see it going in.
24:20You see it once and you don't get to touch it again. But Billy walking back through.Just you in your mind reflecting. But I think Billy was so pissed because he's like, how did you miss this? It's right there.Right there.Third team.Third team.
24:31Candace was chosen as the team leader.they make a comment of can she step up?She seems scared. She seems quiet. And she seemed very disheveled in this. You see Bree take up and take over or like step up and take over where she's like commanding people.I think Candace was like locked in on the mission internally, not vocally. You know?
24:59She kind of reminds me of you in that sense.Yeah.Where I was like very locked in, but I was not good at saying,do this, do that, do this, you know. They end up coming out with all three.Oh, no.Oh, because they brought the hostages. They're the ones who brought the hostages back into each room.
25:19So they would find a hostage. And as they keep searching, they would bring the hostages with them. And you're supposed to keep them to the side and have someone stay with them and keep them safe. All of this is vague. You're supposed to assume this.but Candace gets ripped by DSQ,which again is like a testing. And I actually respected how she handled it.
25:40She wasn't like trying to fire back,or you could see that there was like an edge to her, right? He's like, what was the mission? And she could relay it.And at the end, he's like, do you think that was a pass? And she just fires back. She said my team passed.I failed.
25:55And I was like, I thought that was respectable.Yeah.You hear talking about how she's disappointed.in herself.Yeah.And again, back to the credit to the show, you really do dig deep and you do learnsomething about yourself. And she said she felt anger she never felt before like in her interview.
26:17And you're like, that's cool.Like it's obviously you don't want to encourage someone to be angry. But she talked about how she dealt with that. And it's like, that's actually a good practice to not.back away from hey I have these emotions and I got riled up in certain ways because I think shewanted to talk back to uh she did yeah which I liked yeah because it showed it they painted heras like meat at first but then you saw with DSQ that she like wanted to snap back yeah but she didn'twhich showed control oh yeah because she was like I don't know how to keep them safe yeah right
26:55but I just love how this puts you in context and situationsthat like you've never been in beforeand that can be terrifyingor it can be amazing growth.Okay, now I want to talk about Candace's interviewbecause I lost sleep last night thinking about this.Okay, you and I were talking about this. They bring her in and the summary of it is basically
27:21she's taken her direction her entire life. She's been a child actor since she was three?Five. And she's just like taking direction her whole lifeand she has actually had a wonderful experience with it.And she's like, I've just taken direction.I am not good at stepping up and leading. Then she goes on to talk about her husband because they're like,
27:44where does it come from? And what is it like at home? And she's like, my husband leads. He, like, is such a great leader. And he does everything for us.And I think she said for me.Everything for me.And it was interesting.
28:02Because hear me out, I have like a little rant here because I was thinking about this.If she's been a child actor since she was five, right? She's, yes, taken direction, but she has been working and having to like be an active worker.Yeah.For so long.Similar to you.Similar to you.Similar to me.
28:26Similar to me.And I remember on our season, they came after me.in our interviews about your demeanor over me.You're too protective.Me?You do too much for her.Like they would come at me like, how can you let him do that?
28:44Like you're so strong. Why would you let him? He's basically breathing down your neck. And I remember literally sitting there thinking,I think that's freaking endearing.Well, hold on.First of all, this is interestingbecause I think there has been some online dialogue
28:59about, oh, this feels like, like a out-of-wack relationship.Go ahead. No, no, no.Let me just finish this line because I want to, because you had a really interesting perspective. But I remember when they were coming after me about you, how you were too overbearing, too protective, too controlling, whatever. And in my head, I was like, are you kidding me?
29:19One, I can handle myself.Like, I've handled myself my whole life.I choose not to anymore because I don't want to.And I have found the greatest man that like helps and supports.supports and is like the greatest teammate and I know I am protected and I know I am sought after andwatched after and like I know that if I get hurt he's there watching and he's going to like helpme and I literally sensed it was like deja vu with Candice where she they're like ripping her thatshe's like not a good leader and maybe she needs to lead more and she's like well my husband leads
29:53and I actually think it's probably because one she actively chose a partner like thatshe's worked since she was five how wonderful would it be to find someone so supportive and amazing thatjust like can do that and so i i would just push back and say like i actually thought that was beautifulyou could tell she loves him so much so she said husband does everything for her because he'sbecause he's a good leader but she doesn't feel confident in her voice so let me tell you i think thatcomes from working since you're five so it's almost separateissues, you think? Yes. So I'll tell you this, because it's different styles, different approaches,at least my intentions as we did the show together and out of the show is very much as teammate,
30:45right? And I don't want to do everything for you, right? I don't want to step in in areas thatyou would be better taking the roll in. You know what I'm saying? You would be better taking the reins on.Today's episode is brought to you by Kachava.I've realized that one of the best things I can do for tomorrow morning is make one decision tonight. Please tell me that decision is laying out your clothes instead of asking me where your shoes are. That would help too, honestly. But I mean setting out my shaker and deciding what I'm having before the morning gets loud and crazy. When breakfast is already planned, I am much less likely to grab something random or skipping entirely and wonder why I'm so incredibly hungry at 10 o'clock.
31:26That is why Kachava has become such an easy ritual for us.Two scoops give you 25 grams of plant-based protein, 6 grams of fiber, and more than 85 superfoods, nutrients, and plant-based ingredients in one shake.Kachava supports energy, digestion, strength, cognition, metabolism, and immunity, and it actually tastes good.Chocolate with peanut butter is one of my faves.I love that it takes less time than everybody deciding what song to play in the car. There's also no artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners.
31:56It's just a simple option that helps fill nutritional gaps.Make tomorrow easier on yourself.Go to cachava.com and use code EastFam for 15% off your order. That's Kachava, K-A-V-A-V-A-V-A-D-C-A-V-A-C-A-V-A-V-A-V-A-V-O.And in the show, I think the only time that they ripped me for being too overbearingwas when you got a concussion playing murder ball. And it was like, yeah, I'm going to check on you.But other than that, we talked about this in our C-E-R-E-R-E-R-E-R-E-R-R-R-E.
32:26season debrief podcast. It's like, no, I was watching you from afarbecause I freaking knew you could handle yourself. And I knew you could do it by yourself. And I could see people looking at our dynamic, looking at that intention and being like, well, that's harsh. And he should be more involved.
32:50He should protect her more. He's, you know, stronger.physically and this is his role and whatever your definition of that is.But I feel like no one else can judge the health of that besides me and besides you andbesides us collectively. And back to the leader, the more we talk about this episode, the more interesting it gets.I actually think it's beautiful.Because back to the leadership thing, it's like, are we going to get rattled about commentary
33:21about our relationship?Yeah.No.because I feel like the Sean that I know wants to step into the fire herself and not haveAndrew there shielding her all the time. You know what I'm saying? And maybe as Candace and Val catch commentary about their relationship where maybe he isa little more protective, I don't think there's a right and a wrong way.
33:46I think it's do they know and do they think, is this their arrangement that they havehigh conviction about that they can justifythat they can feel good about. The one partthat did concern me was just likeshe doesn't feel confident in hervoice. So that's the question mark in mymind where it's like... But I don't think that'sin the relationship. I think that has to be
34:05givenyou alsohave to know that like within theseinterviews, these interviews are like an hour longand they're cropping in, you know, really beneficial andimportant things. But weas viewers might be connecting two separate
34:21comments that aren't under the same context of each other.I would assume just hearing that because I related so much to it.She's been a child actor since she was five. And she openly says, like, I've been directed my entire life.So similar to me, she's had a coach making her decisions for her, her whole life.Okay.That would naturally bring you up through adolescence and through teenage years and youngwith this, am I capable of making choices, right?
34:55When you aren't forced to be the decision maker, the director of your entire life, and you've found people, I do think that would play into the comment of her saying,I don't feel confident in my voice, which I think she'll probably work on for however longshe stays, or that's what they'll work on.but in context to her relationship,I think, psychoanalyzing a two-minute thing that we saw on TV,I think for her to say so confidently,
35:31because you could see her demeanor changewhen she talked about her husband.Yeah.It was not meekiness. It was not insecurity. It was confidence.Right.That if she,
35:41if her comfort zone in Laneis to be directed her whole life, right? Then she essentially went in fact.the greatest director of her life and her partner.Which is good for her.Which is good for her.For her.Yeah.
35:55If that is, it wouldn't make sense for her to go find a spouse or a partner where she has to lead when that's not a role that she's comfortable ever being in.Yeah.So it's like she went and found a leader to spend the rest of her life with who she trusts so wholeheartedly and fully to make all of the leading decisions.So.We paused the episode.and Sean was like, what did you think of that interview? And I was like, my biggest takeaway is that she loves her husband very much.To her credit.
36:24Same.Yeah.And we've had dinner with them.Yeah.We know.That was incredible.That was incredible.What?
36:29Yeah.Yeah.A lot of giggles. He's incredible. Also, you will never, similar to like you, you will never meet a man that loves his wife more.Right.It is interesting. So behind the scenes, you know, we know several of the cast members.
36:43And there's always this anxiety about, oh my gosh, this is the episode where they'regoing to air my interview. How are they going to position my story? Because like it's hard to,again, the show does not twist or manufacture any storyline. What it does is like distilland focus on one aspect of your story that you might not have had awareness on. So, but there wassome, there were some unnerving, uh, feelings about this episode and how it's going to be received. Butback to the credit to the producersbecause what I didn't realize last nightthat as we're talking, I'm realizing now
37:24they took two stories of child actorsor child entertainers if you willCandice on the one handColin on the otherput them in the same episodeand it was totally different mindsetstotally different feelings right Candace saidI had a wonderful experience
37:43yeah Colin which was much more of atraumatic. He talks about how he was exploited. And it's interesting, same situation, different takeaways.Sorry, not the same situation. Not the same situation. But similar storylines.Only same situation because they were in the public eye starting from a young age.
38:06That's the only through line there. But the perception and the filter for what that did to their life is drastically different, which I guess goes back to the power of like, framing and how you interpret things. It's not what happens to you. It's how you respond to what happens to you.In Collins' interview, he talks about basically what we said earlier, which is like he is looking for a family.
38:29He's looking for something to bond him and to feel he felt alienated by his familyand singled out and exploited. And I thought it was really interesting.I would love to ask Rudy and Q,since they were the interviewers, when he talked about the military and how that was taken from him, just that mutual respect of likeRudy I think even said
38:52a lot of people come from very hard backgroundsand they're looking for something.Yeah.I would just love to pick Rudy and Q's brainabout that camaraderie of what people go in seekingfrom the military.Yeah.One note I had was Oliver's feedback to column there
39:10towards the end of episode when he says, hey man.Yeah.It makes me feel like, it makes it feel like, you don't think,I think I know what I'm doing. And it's like, is that harsh? Is it the wrong context?
39:21Is it helpful?I think Oliver's intentions were to help Colin in a good way.And I think kind of more broadly, like the DS feedback is the same thing. It's like, man, it can come across harsh or it's like insightful.Like, oh, man, thank you for sharing that.Maybe I would have used different words or done it in a different context. As far as hard conversations in our life, like if it's an uncomfortable, hey this might make the other person feel some type of way.
39:50I like to sit someone down and say, hey, can we talk on Friday a couple days from nowabout some things and like give them a heads upso that they can prime themselves and prepare themselves? But I thought that was,I thought it was kind of Oliver, assuming that the issue was real like we were seeing it on TVfor him to bring it to Collins' attention.
40:14Fast forwarding a little bit, going to the next thing.they show up to their next challenge, which is chemical warfare, which we have a lot of thoughts about. And a really hard and beautiful scenewas seeing Mauricio,VW, because of a broken rib.I think his rib must have gotten cracked.
40:32Was it during the boxing?I think it was during boxing. And he talks about how he can't really do much.Yeah, he can't breathe. And so here they are walking into this, like they're about to get gassed, and they talk about how it's going to be hard to breathe. And so he VWs.
40:47Yeah.And Alexi is still there. And it's kind of a cool back and forth.Like eye contact.I believe in you.Keep going. And you also see her give like a, it's okay.Like little smile and nod.
41:00It's got to be hard to part ways that like that in such a vulnerable environment. But seeing like the daughter's perspective of like, it's okay, dad.You know?Because DSQ asks Maricio like, are you sure? And he quivers and he's basically, no, I'm not sure. And he looks at his daughter.like, oh my God.I know.
41:16We didn't get that moment. We were bags of our headand we didn't knowwhether the other personwas still there or not.Wait, going back to thatsince we made it to the last day, both of us,
41:26every time that they would pull meinto an interrogation, they would be like, how does it feelto know your husband left you?You know?I thought it was all a pull-up.I thought it was always like a tactic.
41:39I never thought you were actually gone.I thought they were doing this whole like, surprise. And I literally thought itthe very end. They were going to pull you out and be like, excuse me suckers.Yeah.Okay.
41:49So the recruits get pulled with this building. They say calm now, calm down. And they rip the mask off.And it's like everyone's crying and freaking it out.And like there's tears and vomit. It's crazy to see.I mean, I think the only notable one here was Colin. No, Matt Barnes team.
42:09Yeah.He was like Matt Barnes, David Charvey and Alicia Baum got it.Bomb Gardner. They said Matt had a calm voice.Yeah.And they fought it out. They're like calm walking through there.Yeah.
42:22Just vomiting.Still a lot of snot everywhere. And our season, we ever, we never actually got the real gas.We just got some smoke. But they told us it was gas.So we were all freaked out. We,which actually is kind of interesting.
42:35Maybe they did that on purpose to like see what, how much freak out wound.Yeah.We were freaking out.As I say.I will say, we both feel like we missed out.a little bit, not being...I kind of wish we got gas.
42:47I know.It looks miserable.Thank you to David for sponsoring today's episode.I know most people don't turn their snacks into a math problem, but I absolutely do.He really does.He will hold up two nutrition labels like he's judging the final round of a competition.Because if I'm choosing a protein bar, I want to know how much protein I'm getting for thecalories.
43:06David Gold bars make that scoreboard pretty simple.28 grams of protein, 150 calories, and zero grams of sugar. And they do not.taste like somebody compressed a scoop of protein powder into a rectangle. They have a soft doughy center with crunchy pieces, the chocolate chip cookie dough, and the fudgebrownie flavors genuinely feel like dessert.David also makes bronze bars with this marshmallow-style sitter and chocolate coating. Those have 20 grams of protein, 150 calories, and zero sugar.
43:35The s'mores chocolate crunch is hard to beat. They are easy to keep in the car, your gym bag, or the pantry for the moment when youneed something filling before you accidentally eat half of the other kids snack.Go to Davidprotein.com slash EastFam, buy four cartons and get the fifth free. That's Davidprotein.com slash EastFam. You can also find David at Target, Walmart, Kroger,Wegmans, and the vitamin shop. Check it out. Let's get back to it.My closing thought on this episode was Collins' interview was the closing kind of sequence. And he says, my only shot at ever having a family was joining the Marines, literally.
44:09And back to perspective and framing, it's like, was that a great opportunity to have afamily? Yes. Is it the only? He's young. He's early 20s. It's like, is that his literal only opportunityof joining a family? No. Yeah. But I think if he keeps this mindset, then, you know, whether you thinkyou can or think you can't, you're right. Whether you think that's your only family opportunity or not, you're right. Yeah. We feel like family with the people that we're on the show with, you know what I'm saying? So it's like, that's an opportunity. And then whatever he gets into next is an opportunity. And it's like,it's never as good or bad as you think it is.And it's just rolling to the next thing
44:48and don't have these preconceptionsthat then are self-fulfilling prophecies, you know?Yeah. They forecast and foreshadowand give little sneak peeks of the next episodes. And it seems like, you know, they go through the shock wave of the first couple days. Then they go into this phase of like,
45:05let's really push limits, push boundaries and poke the bear.Yeah.And then we're going to see them ease into this phaseof just like, now let's break them in exhaustion.Yeah.And you can see that. The mud, the climbing, just absolute mental and physical exhaustion.
45:26And they do that in this little next wave so that by the time you get to interrogation, you're just like, I don't say broken, but like broken.About to get weird. It is.I'm so excited.I freaking love this show. It's a great episode.Let us know what you think.
45:39Oh, comments from previous episodes.K. Fotherberg.said, I live for these recaps. You guys are the best.Thank you.Let's see.Lindsay says, does Andrew have another freaking sty?And then there's comments about my hospital band I was wearing, too.
45:58People notice that?Yeah.Wait, did you have a sty?No, you don't have a stye. No, I did record that episode a couple hours after I ran a 459 mile, which sent me to the hospital.I'm really proud of you.Thank you.Really proud of you.
46:12We did it.I broke.I broke five minutes and I broke my body.Yeah.So my kidney shut down and it was a wild.Actually, I'm still recovering.I know. And my body's been wrecked ever since.
46:24So basically, just to give the long story here as the really proud and impressed, but also really annoyed wife.Yeah.So he wakes up the morning after we get home from Tijuana like a mission trip. We're both depleted.we wear aura rings. He wakes up in the morning.ORA's like major signs, which usually means like your body's fighting a virus
46:49or it's like completely depleted. And if you follow ORA well, you can recover well.Like on a major science day,you should basically like do nothingbut laying bed or drink water. And he's like, today's the perfect day.
47:01Look, was I right though?Because I would have just kept kicking the can down the road. It's like you got to pouncewhen you got the opportunity. So then not feeling well.He wakes up at like 6 a.m.He throws back 15 different supplements, a C4 energy drink.Had to.
47:17Coffee.Performance.No food goes and runs it.Puts his kidneys into acute kidney injury or basically rabdo.Goes to the ER.Has to get five bags of fluid.Comes back. His body's now just tanked.
47:30So then he gets like a man cold.Wasn't recovered filming the previous episode.Still not recovered now.But last comment, Pamela says it would be really interesting to interview one of the cameracrew because for the.the cliff repelling scene. She would love to hear how some of the behind the scenes of what they had to do to getcertain shots.
47:48The repel guy?Who?The,there's this one guy.The safety guy.Trevor,was that a name?He was awesome.
47:56I think it was Trevor.Good, good folder.Oh, the show wouldn't like if we got Trevor.Yeah, that's fun.We love the show.Let us know what you thought of this episode.Leave your comments. Thanks for watching this far.
48:06If you made it this far, please hit thumbs up.Subscribe.See you next time.I'm being, Drew.I'm shot.Out.
