Welcome to our summer dissect series. We're doing a, we're testing out a little new item today. So if it sounds like there's a lot of beach locale in the background, a lot of wind, Random men screaming. Random kids screaming because they're playing that game where you bounce the ball off the net on the whatever that is. It's all good. That's because we are live from Hermosa Beach, California today. We're doing a little test run.

We like the idea of maybe one day doing a little travel show with it. You know, taking out different locations. Maybe see if we could set this thing up on locale. And that's what we're doing here today. That's what we're doing, guys. And I got to be honest with you, this is mesmerizing. Steve. This is different.

It's a different experience. I got this thing called a jackery. Not sure if you guys know, but whatever. It's a battery that's able to play anything we need for about six straight hours. And we connect everything to it. And we literally have, we're in the middle of the beach with power cameras. Loud kids screaming. They just scored a point in Smashball.

It's really just one of them. It's one of them. He gets way too hyped every time he scores. So hopefully he sucks the rest of the time that we're out here because he's a lot. But what are we doing today, Steve? What are we? our summer series, I came up with a new concept that is going to take us to the past and send us right back to a year that maybe we all loved, but I'm sure we all remember.

And so today, what we're going to do is the top five songs from the year 2000. Sorry, I dropped shit. We're at the beach. He's going to have dust that off. It's probably ruined forever. It's going to have sand in it. Sand doesn't go away quickly. Let's be real.

So you said 2000s? The year 2000. The year 2000. Picture this. Zero 2000. The internet is starting to really come along. We're downloading music on our parents' computer, giving it aids unknowingly every time we go on a Kazah. Guess what?

You can download every single one of these songs that we're listening today. And that was a new thing at the time, and we were psyched on it. I loved it. Pop music is all the range. Boy bands have been really taken over the music industry for the past few years, but it's just around the point that we're like, You know what? I think we're kind of tired of that bullshit.

Let's move on us something else. Maybe some dance, hip hop. And man, did it come with a fury from about 2000 and 2003? Yeah. The year previous, everybody was worried that the computers were all going to explode. And that technology was just going to not exist. That, of course, didn't happen because that was a ridiculous concept. And now we're chilling in the year 2000 summer.

And we're jamming a country grammar, which was our number five top five. song of 2000 that you heard us open up with by Nelly. And this was actually where Nelly actually like first kicked up. Oh, yeah. I don't remember that. And it's screams 2000. That's why we picked it. That's why I wanted it.

We went to a list of about 30 songs and we're like, you know, country grabbers got to be on there because it screams 2000. I remember walking as a sophomore junior in high school and just do too, too, hot shit. Hot shit. And you would walk down and walk down on the lunch line. Oh, man. Dude, can we just give credit to that first line? Like that literally.

This motherfucker right here? Yeah, do it again. Yeah, you're right. Just that hot first five seconds of this song, really, it's all it needs. It sets it up and then the rest of the song is literally he just keeps rapping at that same flow, that beat stays the same, but the first five seconds immediately gets everybody hype that three-beat drop, do three-beat drop again. Do it one more time.

Hold up, you ready for it? Here it comes. That's all you need, just right there. And then it just sets the whole. rest of the song off and he just keeps rapping that same flow. The music video is just him in St. Louis and he's just like doing a bunch of this. Everybody's in the

background. He gets to put his city on. And he's shimmy, shimmy, cocoa, what? I didn't even know what he was talking about. Light it up and take a puff. This is before I even thought about smoking. I was like, I don't know what he's talking about, but I like it. You know what else in 2000s came in? We had some awesome rock music that

hit us, and this one was one of those that everybody remembers. Hit it. Are we going to number four? Yes. Number four. drums I took a walk around the world to ease my trouble mine I left my body but I watch the world

Let's get to the main part real quick Let's get to it I kind of wanted some ice cream Fuck yeah! Here we go! Yeah I was just honestly kind of disappointed We were playing the song where the ice cream guy walked by. We had the guy wheel his ice cream.

Because don't forget, we're at the beach. Yeah, yeah. And I thought it would have been cool if we got some ice cream like on the show. But we were listening to Kryptonite. And I don't have any money. Justin was really into it. Well, I have a phone. And you, if you can't take a phone as payment these days,

you're not doing your business right. I guarantee the ice cream guy on the beach knows how to take phone payment. Let's call him over. Yeah. So you know it. If he makes his way back out here, he does, if he does it, I won't end up with that Ninja Turtles Pop. But, uh, dude, I'm going to challenge.

as these fucking kids of this game I've never played and I bet I whoop their fucking ass I did play it once no no no don't do it I don't even want to they're gonna like want to get on and like talk and I don't want to talk to any of these kids you're right I hate talking so this time of year living here at Hermosa beach it gets inundated with high school kids and it happens like immediately as soon as like mid-June happens like suddenly anywhere you go on the beach there's like high school kids everywhere it's a lot sometime you know how it is when you're in high school they just kind of like take over when you're like 15 to like 18 year old you just feel like

wherever you're at is like the, this is the only thing that really matters in this place. I'm like, you own the spot. So that's what happens to the beach around this time of year. But you know what else happens? Summer and dope music, at least back in 2000 you did. So Krypton Night, what are your memories of this song? Because, you saw that on the list and you're immediately like, Superman, got to get in the top five. It's just, I got to be honest, I thought it was a different song.

Are you shitting me? But it's still. Which song did you think it was? It was corn. What? You know what? Completely different sounds. Yeah, but you know, yeah, I thought it was a little more.

But still, Yeah, those are around this time, too. Yeah, right, this time. So, anyway, it's just pure rock. That's all I was going for. You wanted to get a little variety. I wanted to get a little variety. I wanted to.

Yeah, you called it. Well, that's another. But then 2000s had smoothness to it, too. Yeah, yeah. It had grooviness. It had romanticism. A little bit. Should we get into that one, number three?

no matter what you do. to it but next is a group that's going to be like we see your beat and say hold my beer watch what we do with it and uh that's the kind of song like if you have a wifie there's no more romantic yet sick hip hop groove beat that you can put on to that yeah and the great thing about next is they can't they have two jams two that we all know but they slay for life they came back to back on the radio they were back the next level love both of them songs i don't even know that group next is they still played this stuff concerts where you can go see next.

All you need, if you're like a throwback act, is to have two to three songs that everybody loves, and you could ride that out in the sunset. And then you just do copies of other people's songs. For years. We just did a, or I guess it was a couple years ago now, we did Neil Diamond. He's got a couple, like, songs that people like,

but really, Sweet Caroline, this full still selling out stadiums 60 years after he made that song. If you have a song that everybody loves, they're going to want to go to at least hear those songs. like those two songs. If they got two songs that they love, and then the rest of it, if it sounds somewhat similar to it,

they'll vibe, they'll party to it. And they clearly got it with this and too close, and it lasted forever. So as previously discussed, we talked about that being number one, but Justin threw it at number three, so that'll work. I thought that was number three

because I thought we had different one, because number two was supposed to be this bad boy and this smooth jam that I still played to this day at dinner shows for weddings. What's number two? For events. Carlos, bring it.

Actually, when that song was being played all through the summer of 2000, I always saw it at MTV, and they would always say the artist was Carlos Santana featuring Wycliffe. And White Clef's the one singing that shit.

And that's it. No, he's not. Who's singing that shit? His name is like, it's finally like years later. I found out his name is like the Project G&B or some shit. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That guy sings all the words of the song, and he was just left. You know how at the end of a music video would say artist Carlos Satana featuring Wyclef?

Just because they were the two big names. I'm like, okay, and the guy that sang the whole song, he just, he doesn't get brought up. White Clef has like two, he just goes, so sad with sad. That's all he brings to it. That's all he does. And they'd be like, yeah, that was featured. You hear Y Clef? You hear Y' clap on that?

That was cool. This fool just got shirked on the whole thing. Check this out, though. I got a remix of this house remix. How could you house remix this song? We'll see you right now. Let's see you later. Five, six, let's go, come on.

It's a little hard. With, like, hits hard, but it doesn't soft. At the same time, I don't get it. It doesn't make sense to me that remix, but it used to be requested last summer, so I played it, you know? I played what the people want. I play what the people want.

That's how you keep songs fresh in, like, modern culture. It's like they want to hear, oh, yeah, you remember the song that was popular? Now, 26 years ago, he haven't even said that yet. These songs were popular 26 years ago, which is crazy. Because I remember it.

when we were growing up, dude. It's kind of crazy. I actually don't remember it like yesterday. I remember it being a long time ago. It was a good year. 2000 is cool. But if you want to keep it fresh now, you just throw a beat on it and be like, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.

Barria, Maria, Maria. Marriya, Maria, Maria. All right. All right, so that's the top four or the five through two. But as you know, the Diasic DJ, sometimes we got to throw a little OLIs in there, a little outside-looking. number one we're not doing one yet no before we get to number one okay we got to do the oh lies I'm ready for it you ready you want to end on like number one but like here are the

songs that didn't make the cut but they were close first one gee gee gee gee gee gee gee gee gee gee gee gee gee you know why fuck them love them leave him whoa whoa jzy comes aggressive with this verbiage but fantastic beats you didn't even want to get to the part where he says big pimping no no I have to be you got out of the that like five seconds. I don't fucking fucking fucking, because I fucking put it in their butt. What is he saying?

I don't know. He sounds like he says it. Justin heard that like your grandpa heard this back in 2000. Whoa! Hey. I don't like all that sailor talk. What did he say about putting what into your woman? What is this? I don't think I like this character.

The Jigga Man? Is that what he calls himself? Or like the don't. What else about this? This O-L-I, why did you put Big Pimpin? What is the thing? All right, so Big Pimpin is just the sound of summer of 2000. I, for one, have actually never been a big fan of this song. I always felt like it was overrated then.

Years later, it felt like it was a beat that, like, DJs would throw on and make you be like, you're supposed to be like, oh, like when they play it, and you're all supposed to be like, at best I'll give it this. It has, like, a beach sound, and like, you can, like, kind of do this to it. You know, you're like, uh-huh, do-da-da-da-da. But I was never, honestly, his rap always kind of annoyed me in it. I don't think it's a great rap. The beat gets played out.

It never changes. Once you hear it a lot, I just never got, it lives in the same vein for me as 50 cents P-I-M-P. They both kind of have that sound. It's a good like summer sound, but both beats are just kind of like,

I don't know, it's just, I don't really my sound. They're just there. The happy beach sound vibe for a hip-hop beat, it doesn't always play with the little, like the whistles and a bling, bling,

it works in short doses, like you just played. That was all we needed. Now this, all I agree with. This song is actually, I don't know, I don't want to say it's underground because it was popular at the time, but you just haven't heard it in a while.

There's one of those songs you're like, oh, I haven't heard that song in a while. Yeah, I have. What's up? I take it back. I just said in the last one, when you have that sort of beachy beat, it doesn't necessarily work in hip-hop.

Thank you DeBrette and Tyrese for immediately proving me wrong. There's definitely ways you could do that. Like within seconds they proved you wrong. They were like, hold of it. Do do, do do do, do, do, do, do, did it. Yeah, I love that beat. That one got me hyped.

I remember watching that one. First seeing it come to life when MTV used to do, making it a video, remember when they used to do that? You ever watched that? Vaguely. I feel like you probably didn't watch MTV back in the day. I didn't. I was more of a Gilligan's Island and...

On the dissect DJs going away back to 2000, this song we did a full dissect of one of the very first songs we ever dissected. And it was banging in the summer of 2000. So, of course, we've got to run it back. Throw it up right now. R&B in 2000. Take a headache. Come on. Okay.

And we did that song, as I recall, because it was smack in the middle of the pandemic. and that song made sense. No more shopping sprees, no more late night. We weren't doing shit.

Although I was driving out late under 40 minutes. We can't even kick it no more. Those are the rules of COVID. That's what COVID did to all of us. And you know what? I'm glad that we're able to do all those things. I'm glad we're out of that shit. And now we can play that song again and dissect it beach side.

I have like chat rooms and shit. We would literally do that because it would entertain ourselves because you're 2000. It was just close enough to the perfect balance of like the internet is here for our availability. But too slow for us to stay on it for too long.

Yeah, and we could download music, but it would also fuck up your computer. Everything's in balance. We're always trying to find balance and how far we've come. Similarly to how far we've come on this list, where I think we finally got to our number one song of the summer of 2000. I feel like I'm on MTV's spring break right now. Does I not give you that vibe? It is. This song is that vibes.

And this song really takes me back because I remember this song being so popular. And as I think about it now, it sounds kind of funny and goofy. It's like, ah, it's just a goofy song. No. It has. It had its moment of like, no, this was a shit. Everybody loved it. But that's, that's 2000.

That's like 90s, 2000. Songs that were a little goofy, but, like, had a vibe to them. Like, they would play all summer. And then, of course, this one got to go into it. I feel like it was always a thing. But now all you need to hear is hear Cisco say it. And you're like, you know what? We should do that. Yeah, my mom got one awkwardly. I was like, mom, what are you? It was a crazy summer in 2000, guys. That's why Justin blacked out most of the summer at 2000.

And all I remember is every single time Drew Hill. But he was always, like, sang all the songs of Drew Hill. So you would see that guy and be like, oh, that's True Hill. The guy with the bleach hair and, like, always wearing the vest. He would always have a vest with, like, his abs out and be doing, like, carwheels and shit. And you just thought he was Drew Hill. And then suddenly, smartly, he was like, I got this idea for a new song called Thong Song, but I'm going to drop the whole Drew Hill group because.

I'm gonna let him know who I am, and you just call me Cisco. Still probably not his real name, but at least that was an identity. That was not, just gonna be making up names in 2000. Like we said, they had good hip-hop and R&D, but we were still, like, a little inundated,

like I mentioned in the beginning with, like, the pop music stuff. I feel like the next couple of years we started like really getting like it started cooking a little bit better. 2000 as far as life goes, I was still very young. I was still like just sort of, I think I was, I was entering high school that year maybe? I don't think it was a while ago. You weren't even wrestling yet, huh? No, that was when I started. That was probably exactly when I started.

Yeah, that's exactly what the summer of 2000 was. That was me going a wrestling summer program and that was the first time I ever started. So that's what I was doing in 2000. and then I would come home from that I would play with the basketball team and then I would go to the wrestling team still trying to figure out which way I wanted to go with that. Then I would come home and I would put on MTV at the beach

playing their top 10 jams of the song and every single song we just played here was probably on those list. And now 26 years later I am emulating that thought because MTV is dead but we're still here so I wanted to like recapture that magic come to the beach of Hermosa sit here, look at the ocean, and play some jams that throw us back in a time machine,

back to when the century turned. And part of me wishes you could just go back there. If we could just take all of us right now and just go back there and just live a week, I'm about it. To that, I give five steps.
