Starting point is 00:00:00 This is a VoyEscape podcast. You can find all of our travel podcasts from around the world at voyescape.com. Welcome to Freak of Mylar's Coffee Break, where we focus on a single topic related to miles and points. And each coffee break is limited to 20 minutes or less for your money back. Welcome to a very special coffee break from Freak with Mylar. Today, Nick and I are flying together on the same jet, the Duncan plane. Sort of.
Starting point is 00:00:35 So summarize what the promo is that we're doing and then we'll talk about it. Duncan and JetBlue have this promo where they have a plane that's decked out and the Duncan sort of paint deliveries painted like, you know, Duncan style. And so if you fly on that plane on a Monday between now and September 1st, then you get three months of JetBlue Mosaic 1 status and also three months of Duncan Boosted status. And so we both booked this flight from LaGuardia to Orlando in order to get three months of JetBlue Mosaic 1 status now They release the destinations every Tuesday for the following Monday So you don't get a lot of lead time and knowing when those flights are going to be and there are two Mondays Between now and September 1st where the plane is going to be out for maintenance
Starting point is 00:01:21 So you do have to take a look at the JetBlue website for which routes are eligible on any particular weather. Okay, so that's how it's supposed to work. But we showed up today and there was an equipment swap. So our jet is not really the Duncan plane. There's no Duncan branding on the plane. It's supposed to be completely covered with donuts and coffee, I guess. But all we have is a little symbolic Dunkin cup.
Starting point is 00:01:49 There we are. There we have it. So it's official. We're on the non-Duncan Duncan flight. At least we hope, right. We hope we're going to get our lead status supposed to be this flight. So I assume that the flight is going to count, even though they had to swap out. Right. Right. I'm pretty confident that Nick will get a status. And the reason for that is the instructions for the promo said to fill out a survey
Starting point is 00:02:16 after your flight that that was sent to you before the flight. Nick got that. I did not. We'll see. I don't know. So you also had to be opted in to JetBlue marketing emails. And so I was sure to do that. And I did get the email. I don't know where you opted in. I was opted everywhere and I could find to opt in. So if there's some secret hidden opt in location, maybe maybe that's the problem.
Starting point is 00:02:41 We'll see. Yeah, I did get the email. But I think actually the email, the thing I thought is more so for the Duncan boosted status, my guess is that it'll be automatic. Several readers commented to say that they took the Duncan flight previous to this and that they had status within just a few days. So I would assume in a week or two, we'll know whether either of us or both of us have mosaics once status for a while. Yeah. Well, you know what, for me, the main reason I'm flying this is not really to get JetBlue status or even Duncan boosted status. It's actually just to stalk this guy.
Starting point is 00:03:15 That's all, that's all. I mean, it wouldn't be a party without both of us. Yeah. I love that Nick and his family are planning to do the big challenge. That's where if you go to 25 different JetBlue destinations before the end of this year, you earn 350,000 points and 25 years of JetBlue elite status. 25 years. So if JetBlue survives that long, that's incredible. And he's doing with the whole family. So that means what? One point four million points, right? Which can be pulled together.
Starting point is 00:03:49 And and it means his kids might have their own kids by the time their status runs out, which is just incredible to think about. It is. It's pretty amazing. That's why I felt like we kind of had to do it. I don't know that JetBlue will last for another 25 years, but if they did, it would be pretty wild for my grandkids to end up enjoying some of these benefits. So we'll see how that works out. We'll get the 1.4 million points. And then one of the benefits of Mosaic 1, not from the promo Dunkin' Flate, but if you earn
Starting point is 00:04:17 it through this 25 destination promotion, is that you get an annual perk you can pick. And one of those perks is 15,000 points. And so if all four of my family members choose the 15,000 points, that's another 60,000 points every year we would get for as long as Jeff Lou asks. So do the math. How much is that altogether? Well, that'll be 1.46 million for this year. But then, you know, if you do 25 years, yeah, then that's I don't even know. It's a lot more. It's a lot more guys.
Starting point is 00:04:44 25 times 60,000. If you're quick math. Go ahead and it's figure that out. It's a lot of a lot of points a lot so All right. I want to talk to you now about how are you gonna do this? You're talking about 25 destinations with children and The promo set up so you could fly like through a city to an ultimate destination and that through city will count but the way JetBlue's network network is there's only a handful of through cities. It's true most
Starting point is 00:05:19 flights go through either New York JFK or Boston so I think anybody doing this is gonna end up passing through those two airports a number of times. And then, you know, once you've done that once, you're not picking up an additional airport. So it's kind of like, yeah, you're just picking up one at a time wherever you're going for the most part, but it's not entirely like that.
Starting point is 00:05:36 There are some other connecting airports. So they have a few flights out of DCA, a couple of destinations out of White Plains. And so there's a couple of spots like that. And then out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, they hit a couple of destinations out of White Plains. And so there's a couple of spots like that. And then out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, they hit a couple of Caribbean islands. So there'll be a couple of opportunities, I think, to pick up two destinations in one flight. But it's not going to be easy. There's no doubt about it. It's gonna be a lot of fun. How are you going to do this practically? Because to do that many destinations means unless you're gonna spread it out over a long period of time
Starting point is 00:06:06 and you're not, you said you're gonna try to do most of it in August, how are you gonna get your kids to get up each morning, get on another jet or two? Right? Every day. Every couple of days, hopefully. Every couple of days. So our hope is to space these out
Starting point is 00:06:23 so there's one day in between each flight for the most part. There'll be a couple of times maybe So our hope is to space these out. So there's one day in between each each flight for the most part, there'll be a couple of times maybe we'll have to do back to back days. But my goal is to not do too many back to back days. We'll see. I my fingers crossed on that we still haven't filled out or figured out our entire itinerary for this. So we'll see. But we did talk to the kids in advance. So they agreed to this. And we know that when I remind them later on that they agreed to this that they're going to just understand. Yeah. Yeah. We all
Starting point is 00:06:50 know when a kid's having a fit, reminding them that they agreed to whatever it is, is a totally effective parenting strategy. So I'm glad you have that handle. I do. I do. But the truth is my kids are pretty good at flights and hotels. They enjoy traveling. I don't know that they will forever, but at this stage they get excited about it. They enjoy the chance to sit on the plane and either look out the window or plan a tablet for a little bit because they don't get to do that at all a lot. So that'll be good and we'll build in some homework time. So I actually typically find the flight experience to be among the easiest times and the airport experience to be among the easiest times.
Starting point is 00:07:26 You know, day to day, obviously, kids are kids. So they're not always easy, but on planes and, you know, in the airports, it's normally fairly good. So I'm hopeful anyway, that it'll go smooth. Now check in with me midway through August and see if I'm still as hopeful. Yeah, I don't know. Well, I'm looking forward to following along,
Starting point is 00:07:39 but I might not stalk you on those flights the way I did on this one, but stay tuned. I don't know Yeah, Gary is today folks, right? So so you talked about how you're gonna get your kids to you along with it What about your wife? So do you think you'll be so married at the end of this? Oh, I hope so, you know The funny thing is and we're talking about this actually separately from this my wife loves to travel but she hates to fly I've mentioned that a number of times before.
Starting point is 00:08:05 So typically she wants to go somewhere for a week or two weeks or a longer period of time. So I didn't think she would have any interest in this promotion, but lo and behold, I explained it to her and she got really interested. And next thing I knew she was looking up flight connections and telling me routes that we could take to do this. So she's kind of gotten into it, into the planning part of it. So I actually am really surprised. She's totally on board at this point. She definitely thinks it's a little crazy
Starting point is 00:08:31 and I think she'll be more intimidated as we get closer to taking off. But at this point, we don't even have anything booked yet. So there's nothing to be intimidated about yet. But you're committed because you've posted on the blog that you're definitely doing it. We've talked about it on the podcast that you're definitely doing it. You know talked about on the podcast that you're definitely doing it.
Starting point is 00:08:46 You know, for me, I have the same experience and my wife was actually excited about it. And she was all in until we plotted out a whole recap and she saw what it would really mean. And that she's like, I'm having second thoughts about this. Well, that might happen. But the thing is, we're kind of locked in now, like you said. So I've said that we're going to do it and we publish that. So I think, you know, I think we'll find a way to make it work. Knock on wood. Hopefully nobody gets sick because that could throw a wrench
Starting point is 00:09:14 in things. And if it happened at the beginning of the trip, then maybe it would affect whether or not we're able to complete it. If it happens later in the trip, I think we'll probably just drop back 10 yards and punch and maybe try to plan a couple of weekend trips because we do have until the end of the year. I anticipate getting 20 airports done by the end of August or first couple of days, September anyway, because the kids are off of school and not in summer camp. So we should be able to make that work. And then we already have planned trips that will take us through five JetBlue airports later this year. So as long as we get to 20 or pretty close to 20 by the end of August, we should be good to go. And by the time you get to 20, you got the 350,000 points per person. Right. That's awesome. Which we might need. Well, I can't wait to see what happens. Stay tuned.
