ASOIAF Episode 287 — ACOK Tyrion VI
00:16 Hello and welcome to Girls Gone Cannon reads A Song of Ice and Fire. Episode 287, Tyrion 6 in A Clash of Kings. I'm one of your hosts, Chloe. And I am another one of your hosts, Eliana. We are here holding court with Tyrion and there's a lot to talk about this week. Before we get into all that. There's some shenanigans. There's a lot of shenanigans going on in this chapter.
00:45 But also, in real life, in regards to... In real life. You guys, we saved our discussions about sports for all of you. Yeah, just like in A-Swaff, the Eagles are down bad. Right? They are down bad in a clash of kings due to John Aaron being dead. Oh. I was like, what is...
01:09 Get it. What is she talking about? I was like, who are the Eagles? Who do we mean? But also like, much like in A-Swaff, the lions right now are up. They are up. They are up hard. They are slaughtering their opponents.
01:23 They are up. Stalks are up. Diva up. Yeah, diva up. Yeah, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye. No, for real. That's what this chapter feels like, especially for Tyrion right now. There's no peak.
01:34 Yeah, there's no peak. Tyrion's peaking. Lions are doing so bad. It's right now. People who are doing bad. Okay, but what about your issues? Mine, okay, the Dodgers are doing bad. It was sad.
01:43 Our little lion cub, Yoshinogu Yamamoto. Oh. He was crying because he did, and it's so sad. Okay, baby boy, as other people were saying, no, not my Shayla. I'm guarding him in the dugout. Things are sad. Things are bad. But hopefully.
02:03 I really feel bad for you because my team failed already. That's true. Things could turn around. Both of them. Like, it's only, you know, the week's not over. By the time that you all listen to this, I could be like, a different girl. I could be elated, but I could also be even sad or anything could be happening by the time this comes out for the public. Like any moment all the time. Isn't that exhilarating?
02:23 God, it's so exhilarating. Things change so fast around here. Well, we will catch up with you on our sports, but not next week. No. Maybe question mark, you will be hosting either a solo episode or skipping a week. Anything could happen. Uh, anything could happen. Start putting your best. of Thrones. Call she or the Sydney Sweeney booby app. Oh my God. What is sports betting app?
02:50 Yo, girls gone canon betting app. No, that's, that'd be so men gone canon though of us, you know? I'm in, I'm in. Yeah, you know what? I work is driving me
03:03 insane right now. Like actually insane. So the good news is I took some time off for literally a week to go see some dear friends of ours, Game of Ombuds. Not Baratians.
03:16 And not Barathears. But kind of, maybe there's is the fury. I'm going to go hang out with Game of Oans for a week. So I'll be back. Who knows? You might hear something out of it. You never know with them.
03:29 There could be, knowing Zach, yeah, it could be a little podcast. You just never know. He likes to get his mic out. He likes to be like, you want to just record right here? I was like, I don't know, I guess. You know what? That's what you've been missing, Ellie.
03:43 You haven't been able to do the TikTok, you know, tell me how you feel about Tira and answer to people. No, but I think Zach could do it. Zach from Game of Oans could do it. He would. I think we could do it, like, I guess, but I'm just not brave. We'll try it. We'll try it.
04:00 All that said, we will be putting out a episode for you at the end of month. It will not be A-Swaff. It will be an episode on a short story by George R. Martin called Remembering Melody. This was our 79th Patreon episode. And just to fill you in, if you don't know, patrons that are in the stranger tier and above get bonus episodes. Every single month we put out a bonus episode. Sometimes it's patron led. Sometimes it's us led or wherever our heart leads us.
04:31 It just really depends. Lately, we've been doing the hunger games and we just finished the main trilogy. So. I want to do it again. We are putting... We are putting out this month for public An old episode Remembering Melody A Story by George R. Martin
04:49 in Dream Songs Part 1 But patrons will get a new episode too Only Death can pay for life Yeah Oh my God, literally only death can pay for life And that episode is going to be the glass flower And I would like to apologize for my sinning Because last episode I said it was in Dream Songs
05:07 Part 1, I'm pretty sure. It's not. That was a bullshit lie. that I told you. It is in Dream Songs Part 2. I learned as I was reading it this week on the train. Oh, okay. So now because of Big George, you must buy two stories. Dream Songs Part 1 and Dream Songs Part 2, but it's worth it. It's so worth it. There's lots to read in both. We're going to do the glass flower. You've got to listen at the end of the month. You can sign up to be a patron in any tier at patreon.com slash
05:38 girls gone canon. C-A-N-O-N. And if you're listening to this, you do have time to get on our Patreon for our brunch slash happy hour, which is on October 25th. October 25th,
05:55 this month, where I guess anything could really happen. We've been having some really good ones. I don't know. It's just been like a really good time. The right people the right time. It's been like just right and you could be one of those people
06:10 having the right time. You could. You literally could. Yeah. And that's available for patrons in the thunder tier and above. And that's going to be, hold on, let me get for all of you the actual time because we move it up and down. One p.m. ET. And yeah, okay, wait. I know this for it. I will be on a train during this time. Maybe something I can talk about during then if you want to catch up on that is I've actually finally started playing
06:36 Pokemon Scarlet. I tried to a long time ago. Okay, I actually keep up with most of the I need to restart it. I have the same issue. I need to restart. I couldn't get into it the first time. It's because I could come off of playing Tears of the Kingdom. I was like, I can't, I can't with these graphics. I can't with whatever is happening in this
06:52 open world. This open world is not as open as a world could be. It was too jarring. And like, I love Pokemon. And I have even played, you know, like I said, I've played. laid up until most of the gens
07:08 except for this one and except for the ones on the DS because I didn't have a DS during that time because money. Mm-hmm. So. That's real. That's real. It's real. So anyway, I'm now
07:21 finally making it through Pokemon Scarlet. That's my life development for all of you. Fun. I love that and I am so close to finishing dressmaker. Oh yeah. I do. Yeah, because that's what I have. I do have. My partner was like Dude, what the fuck is this game Chloe's playing?
07:39 What do you mean that in these stats it says flowers and flower? And pulled up one of the screenshots of something. He's like, what is this? Yeah, dude, you don't even know. You don't want to know, quite frankly. It is so good. Dressmaker is the shit. It is out of control.
07:55 More people are playing it than ever. You know what? The person that made it did not expect it to get this big. That's true. It is pretty big. You can be making dresses. I'm even doing like a swaffy. dresses. I'm having a blast. I'm making
08:07 a swap inspired dresses all the time. In fact, like, when the stress of life is getting to me, I'm like, what if I made a quick dress? I react. You know, what if I just go make a quick dress? So, it's good. It's like having a quick cigarette, but you're just making a quick dress and dressmaker. Highly wreck.
08:23 Okay. Okay. Yeah. It's... Same exact thing. The little Marlboro red dress. That's what you can do. Or Dajaram, the little Dejaroam black drugs? I don't know enough about cigarettes. I know marlboros and I know American spirits. Okay. And I know what else exists? Man, never mind. We don't have to advertise for them.
08:48 We've got emails. No, we've got to stop. Big, big, big tobacco doesn't eat this. No, speaking of how the time passes, I loved this opening. No, this, I was so excited. Oh my God, this email is so good. This made my day. I was having a terrible day when I read this email and it made my day. I think I was like, Chloe, we got the cutest email yesterday. And it says, hello Chloe from drunk assoff history and Eliana from Maester Monthly. Who are they? Who are they? I love them. I do.
09:20 I do love them. Those girls. I just started a read-through of Aswaf with my boyfriend who follows all the shows but has never read the books. I've been POV-pilled for so long that it's weird to read the books normally again. But I thought this would be a good time for me to finally listen to your Eddard episodes. I thought we should start back. IDKY, but I've kept him as like an emergency GGCPOV if I ever need one. Sobbing emoji.
09:54 I started listening during the Barriston chapters and just never went back because if I look back, I am lost. I've only listened to the first one so far, but I just had to write in and tell you how adorable this episode is. Like you guys are just so excited. It's obvious how much fun you're having and how well you two click. Banger of a first episode two. I never caught the Hades and Persephone parallel with Robert bringing Ned a bunch of tasty fruit and be like, come join me in the snake pit.
10:28 It's so nice, I promise. Side note, I guess I never caught that. too, that sounds like an incredible insight. Girl who hasn't listened to her own episodes in a while. I'm like, wow. Good for them. Low key. Every time I hear something about what we once said, I'm like, good for them.
10:48 I'm like, damn. I love Chloe from period. Wait, this last part. This last part. Yeah, this last paragraph says, I also love the continuity of Eliana going, oh, look, it's my friend Ned in this episode and him still being called your friend Ned in the Tyrion A Clash of Kings chapters. I'm using up my emergency GGCPOV though. Your move, George. Much love Tyler.
11:17 This one, I didn't realize that. I'm going to cry. This should be framed. It's a whole inside friend dead. Even back then. I love this. It's so, it's so funny. This is like, frame it. Frame it. Put it in the books. Thank you, Tyler. I needed that last week when it was sent. It very much. It moved me. Agreed. And I would never cry during this podcast, but a tear might have just welled up in my eye.
11:42 So do with that what you will. I am fascinated that. So as you all know, we love hearing like, where did you start? Did you ever go back, et cetera? So I love hearing from Tyler that Tyler started during the Barriston chapters and just like never went back. because I feel like people didn't like our barrister coverage. And I always don't go wanting to redo it, which I guess, you know, the time might be soon. I don't know.
12:10 Oh, my God. Okay. All right. All right. You're getting out of control. I do love that the idea of like a safety, you know, like a break in case of emergency, like a GGC POV hit. Wow.
12:23 And now his watch has ended. Like that's what's crazy. Now he doesn't have that. Because, you know, our. friend died. Ned? Yeah. Yeah.
12:32 That's true. Died. But we talk about how much he's dead all the time. Yeah, wait. Okay, our next email. Thank you, Tyler. That was an incredible email. Our next email was from a friend, Jason H.
12:45 Which, this is crazy. Jason's doxing himself. Revealed that he is Coach Pierre on Spotify. They are the same person. Whoa. Yeah. This is like... Did you know that?
12:58 I feel like I didn't. Elaine Stone Sonsa Stark. I don't know that I did. This is like Elaine and Sonsa, like, IRL. Really incredible. If someone leaves, like, they uses the username Coach Pierre, same as how I'm always asking people, are you sure, like, that's the name y'all want to use on Spotify right now when you comment?
13:14 Like, I'm just going to assume your name's Pierre. Yeah, I thought it was Pierre, but it's actually Jason H, so. Mind is blown. I've been in with the same person all over. All over. Wow. Sneaky, honestly. kind of sneaky. Jason
13:30 Coach Pierre, fucked up, says, long time listener, occasional emailer, LMAO. I know I am about a week early on this, but this week's episode got me thinking about the beard conversation. Dada-da-da-da. A beard is a man's makeup is exactly right. We were
13:46 early too. I know the feeling firsthand. When I shave mine, I suddenly have a weak chin. When it grows back, I do not. Same chin. Nailed it. As aside, I dictated most of this email. Voice of text is not built for fantasy. My phone heard Tyrion as Terry and Picelles is Pikeville. So if anything below reads strangely, now you know why.
14:05 It doesn't help him from Appalachia. It also made me realize just how much Martin loves body part senecteke and Paisal's beard is just the latest entry on a long list. Yeah, okay. The biblical version is Samson and his hair, the strength in the follicles. Westeros has its own collection. Corrin halfhand, Jamie and his hand. John Snow's burned hand, Davos and his shortened fingers.
14:28 Blood Raven is missing eye And of course all the figurative hands The Hands of the King Ah, who stand in for the whole person And power they carry Paisal's beard belongs on that list Oh, that's great especially with the end of this chapter He's been meaning to write the full essay version of this
14:45 Oh, since the Tumblr days. Ooh, I hope we inspired you. You could do it. You could do it. So consider this the short version. I guess Theon or Rique is the ship of Theseus. How many pieces can Ramsey take before he stopped? being Theon.
15:00 Whoa, banger. What do you two make of it all? I have something like a thousand theories in one, so I'll spare you the list and just ask. Ooh. I do love that because, you know, George R. Martin is a man. True. And he does have knowledge of these manly feelings. And beards.
15:16 That seem to be embodied in text. Yeah. And, you know, just like George, I've actually always considered men to be, you know, full beings that can, you know, have emotions. Be it. Censor bleep. Beep. Anyways. I do think that, you know, he's playing with that, like, these insecurities, right? It's crazy because you think about Cercy on her walk of shame and all the things being stripped from her and her power being stripped from her.
15:46 And, like, Paisal right here suffers that in a way, too, right? Not quite is disparaging and misogynistic and terrible. But like, I get it. That is what a man has. That's a man's armor. Courtesy is a woman's armor. A beard is a man's armor. So it's funny you say that.
16:04 And I was going to bring it up then, but we might as well talk about it now. First of all, hold on. Flowers for Jason. Like, you cooked this email. Coach Pierre. Yeah. This email was fire. Like, this was very good.
16:15 Whoa, we were the ones getting coached by Pierre. Yeah. Pierre, Jason. Pierre, no. No. Anyways, so when you talked about Keep it going. Ceresi, like, that actually was what I was thinking,
16:27 because, like, you kind of feel a little upset about Paisel, this chapter, as you're getting into the part where they start shaving him, and you're kind of like, yeah, fuck him, get him for all that. And then you, like, realize, same as, like, with Cercy, the reason why they're, like, doing this to him and shaving his beard and making him do all this stuff has nothing to do with actually that bad thing that he did. Right, same as with Circe.
16:52 Like, they humiliate her and, like, you know, shame her for her body, take that away and, like, all these, this humiliation. For a thing that actually isn't really the bad thing. The problem. That she did. Right? And like... Just like Theon? Just like with Theon.
17:08 But also even when, you know, this is kind of different, but I also was also thinking about it in the context of our friend Rowan really hates that the character Roan's hair was cut off in the story. sworn sword and like how kind of invasive that is and seeing how forceful it is with Paisal here that they even like nick his skin and are threatening his life during the shaving process. I actually was like, wait, no, I stop feeling bad and then I felt, I don't know. We'll get into it in this episode, but like there's a snapshot. That's basically, I guess, all the feelings that I had on it. But I don't know. As you said, like with seriously, I really like, there's a lot to think about.
17:49 It really makes you think. Jason, thank you so much for your emails and your comments. We do love them. We actually got a ton of comments over on Spotify. We're going to come back to some of them next week or not next week. Sorry, next episode. Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. But we will come back to some more of them. We do have a little bit of an episode to go before us. So let's jump into that. Still, wow, we're approaching the Blackwater bit by bit. We're trudging forward. We're not there yet, but we will be. We've got many, many chapters to go because we love that about T. period. We actually do. Many, many checkers. So that is good because I think, you know, gives George more time that any moment now. TikTok, TikTok, TikTok. Too well on the clock. On the clock. Stop, you've got to be stopped. You literally have you stopped. I don't know. That wasn't my best version. Yeah. I'm going to stop you. We're going to go into the lightning round where you can TikTok all day long. We're going to start with Brand 3 at the harvest feast. Brand meets his new two. best friends. At night they visit his wolf in his dreams. Catlin too. Catlin hopes to broker a peace between brothers but is interrupted when Stanis begins to lay siege. Brothers! John 3. At Crassers' Keep, John learns a bit of lore on the keep and the Lord within, and Manse Rader has continued to gather folks at the Frost Fangs. Theon 2. This is actually the
19:20 second time I've heard this, Chloe's saying it to me as she typed it, which honestly, we should have recorded it. That was a, that was a banger tune she came up with as she typed all this out. Thank you. Thank you. Beyond two, Dionne flirts with his sister unknowingly, and gets hard anyway, before his dad berates him, and maybe he gets him hard then, too. Well? Well? I mean, well. Of course, speaking of men who get hard about their father, we're at Tyrion 6 in a clash of kings Where not just do men get hard at their father Anyone into poisoning them sisters
19:58 Anyone up? Who up? There's a lot of sister stuff going on I didn't mean it like that But I mean it works first beyond I guess I don't know Anyways We start off in Tyrion 6 Where Tyrion enters his sister's chamber
20:19 where Lansel, his cousin, is entertaining Sersie, with music and singing, and immediately Tyrion clocks just how insufferable Lansel has become since he's been made a night. He's 16 years old now, insufferable, insufferable age, Tyrion thinks, which is so real, that's true. But also, like, not to make it a Circe chapter, but so interesting that this is what she wants. Like, she wants to lay around, like, half a dress, right, listening to him sing Fleet Foxes. for her, right? Like, he's, like, do you think Lansel was singing the Decembrists?
20:53 What do you think was being played in this room? What do I think Lansel plays? Um, yeah, honestly, like, that could make sense. I just, like, don't know if I see him having that kind of taste, I guess. I'm an engine driver. No? Um, I think I see him as, like, a... See, the thing is, I was going to say, like, I don't know.
21:19 Dave Matthews or like when it was, but at the same time, they are like arguably, like, arguably, like, talented in terms of instruments, even though they're not, like, my thing. Does that make sense? Yes. So, he's a musician. Also, they all, they're also all talented. Also, like, very, it also did, like, all talk of side. It made me think of, like, Blue Wat later. And, like, Circe and also Tyrion and the Bard later. What? Tyrion and Simeon Silverton to kind of make me think of them. And like all of these artists who are sacrificed by the hand of the Lannisters. And also interesting that like Tyrion is so consumed with being like, I've won dear sister and now I must poison you.
22:08 That it's very clear that Circe and Lansel have some intimacy going on here. whatever the level of intimacy, like she is reclining on her cushions, her feet are bare, her dress is all tousled, her hair is all tousled, Lancel's singing for her and entertaining her. Turing comments on like how her eyes are all like a light and everything and she looks so engrossed with it and that Lancel is now handsome and arrogant at the age of 16 and cursed with the Lannister good looks. Like cursed with Circe. Really? It's just funny that Tyrion is so once more obsessed with his endeavor of winning against his sister that he doesn't stop there. Later he puts it together, right?
22:56 We get to see that when it goes down. But here, he doesn't even blink. He just is like, yeah, yeah, yeah, our cousin is singing for her. But this is what Circe craved, right? Somebody familial and that can shower her with attention and affection. in her time of desire. Like, of course, this is literally, oh, my God, Lansel is like Hunter from the Office.
23:22 Crazy. Anyways. I don't know. Don't worry about it. So, A, first of all, I kind of forgot that Lansel was such a good singer until this chapter. He was talented before her. Yeah. No, for real, before her.
23:35 Because, like, I think what you're saying here, like, I'm going to start this chapter off with some, like, really hot takes, I guess. but Tyrion coming in finding this scene is the equivalent of finding the naked serving girl in Paisal's bed. Mm-hmm. Because, I mean, Lansel is just a 16-year-old boy being taken advantage of by his cousin, his much older cousin, in her 30s. Right? Like, so, and we do see, like, how it does fuck up, Lansel, right? Like, it really does fuck him up emotionally.
24:14 in a feast for crows. Yeah, absolutely. No, actually. And then not just that, but there's more in this chapter where the children are clearly the subplot, the line of the chapter, right? Everything is revolving around children being traded, their skin, their flesh being traded for political wheelings and dealings. We'll come into more of that because there's so much of that in this entire chapter. Yeah. But really good call.
24:44 And Circe, of course, thinks nothing of all this. She just assumes Tyrion's there to complain about her arresting street preachers because she arrested some of them, including one of them claiming that the gods are punishing them because Jamie murdered the rightful king. Fascinating. Tyrion lets it go. He's like, I have way better news than that. And he's like, Stannis has sailed from Dragonstone, which of course is a. initially sending Circe into a panic, except he hasn't sailed for King's Landing. No.
25:19 He is besieging Storm's End, and Renly is riding to meet him in battle. Dun, dun, dun, dun, that's exciting, exhilarating, right? And there's a little heiress propaganda here, and we start to see that rising in the aria chapters. We start to see that rising here with Jamie murdered the rightful king. Hmm Interesting And there's an undercurrent of that In this chapter specifically
25:45 We'll talk a little more about some of the political stuff Going on in the Crown lands, right? With the Rikers But I don't know about that It's kind of crazy like Robert didn't murder Ares obviously But Robert murdered Rhaegar
25:59 So the people don't even believe about Rhaegar Like they believe Ares was the rightful king And who's another blonde little fuck to put on that throne To be fair I mean they've accepted the current one right, but different blonde and everything. But they remember Aries. Yeah, they were like, didn't we have such a good time under Aries?
26:18 And it's like, no. They had no clue he was going to barbecue their asses. It's like everyone's memories are so short regarding all this. And you know what? After living in the real world, maybe that's true. I think that's true. I mean, I think that's a thing is like every giant politician is probably ready to be able to press the button to barbecue.
26:39 at any moment. Isn't that crazy? It's just like the video I watched where people are pretending to barbecue pom-pom pour in on the iPad screen that looks like a barbecue. Toasted. Toasty. Toasted. Cereo-Rio characters. Yeah.
26:57 Well, Tyrion and Circee, though, lose it laughing because, as you said, Robert's brothers are about to fight each other instead of them. And Circe even says, well, maybe a Robert really. was the clever brother. That's crazy. That's crazy talk. It's actually such kind of like a joyful moment. Yeah.
27:18 You know, don't get your hopes up. We're going to crush those hopes in a minute. But a joyful moment, Tyrion threw back his head and roared. They laughed together. Cersie pulled him off the bed and whirled him around and even hugged him. For a moment as giddy as a girl. By the time she let go of him, Tyrion was breathless and dizzy. He staggered to her sideboard and put out a hand to steady.
27:39 himself. They're just it's a mix of so many things. You're so relieved. They're like, that's fucking crazy. I can't believe that that's what's happening. And it's beautiful. And also like, so obviously, yes, there are many ways that Circe and Jamie are quite alike in demeanor.
27:55 But also, I think there are a lot of ways in which Tyrion and Circy are also kind of like emotional twins too, right? That the way that the physical twins aren't as well. Like, we're going to talk about this a lot of like what it means to be like, hungry, but it means to be ambitious.
28:12 And both of them know what it is to hunger, to always be fighting. And also, both of them know what it feels like to fear, right? In a way that I think Jamie doesn't necessarily, maybe he did like for a split second there when he was like, dang, I think this guy's like about to blow up the whole city. But he's about to push the barbecue button as Chloe was saying. But, you know, the... He doesn't know it in the way that Tyrion and Circe do. And I think both of them have shared a fear of what happens if Stanis turns his sights on Kings Landing for a while
28:49 and also the impending march of the Barathean Tyrell, like other side of that alliance. And then you see them like holding each other kind of like enjoy here, whereas last chapter, Circe wouldn't even like let Tyrion touch her while she was experiencing that. emotional pain while she was like sobbing but she will show physical affection and share joy with him like she will touch him when she's really happy and even this is the side she doesn't show other people right like she's seen as the ice queen by everyone else that's how she's described like all of book one and i think she actually is quite like tyrian in that way right like they both don't let people see their weaknesses they don't want to and we get a glimpse of that later this chapter and it's because
29:36 he can't afford to she can't afford to either and i think there's this really beautiful piece of irony with that these siblings, they're brought together in this moment because two other siblings were torn apart with the war that they're waging against each other. And also, I like the way that Tyrion describes like Stannis and Renly and why they're not going to be able to get along. Because I think what he says is exactly a description of him in Circe as well, right? He goes, they are too different yet too much alike, and neither could ever.
30:09 stomach the other. Yeah, you talk about how they're kind of emotional mirrors, but it's also like they hold the mirrors up to one another, right? Like when they look at one another, they see the parts of themselves that are rotten, the parts of the apple that are rotten to the core. For my 365 party girls. For the brat, Lannister Alonsters. I mean, hoomstative.
30:35 It's green for their eyes. The album. I mean the apples run straight. I'm bad the lyrics But yeah You see that because here Just for a moment in the very middle of the chaos And the very middle of all of it
30:53 They're like I see you You see me I almost love you Like something so funny has just happened to us But then it's back to war Right? Like immediately And it's fair to know
31:04 Through all of this And this very What are you getting? Lannister in the spirit of the lanisters I've just gotten the wine delivery holly fucking luya everyone say thank you partner
31:20 wow love is real so you just get you have of course something very fair to note here which is that you know Tyrion is actively manipulating her
31:35 so like on a normal day this wouldn't happen because he is doing everything in his power to oppose her. True. All the time. Like all of the time. So you do have to remember like this is only happening because he's pretending to get along with her so he can poison her.
31:54 So back to our original note about these siblings, obviously, right? But, you know, we'll see later he's like, oh, to Stannis, they drink to Stannis. And he's like, harmless when I'm alone, am I about handing her the wine? So once more, he is obsessed with trying to prove himself to his father, to his siblings, his sister, who's never loved him. And the sad part is he's sacrificing a moment where she actually probably could have loved him because she's so vulnerable. He is literally praying on her vulnerability at this time. He knows she is vulnerable. He's using it.
32:29 He's taking everything away from her while she's declawed. Ooh, yes. That's true, right? He's doing that and like, despite how nice everything is here, he kind of does bucker over in the next few paragraphs throughout this chapter. Her everything. Her guard. Yeah.
32:49 I mean, okay, like, I am, when we talk about it like that, I am kind of like, wow. Okay, it would be fucking crazy, though, if he were the Valacar. Stop it. No, it's like. Only if Tyrion Targaryen's also true, though. I'm just saying. Yeah. I don't know. I'm just saying it would be like...
33:08 Can you have both? Is that Abel? I mean... Maybe. I'm just saying that like... That as we've already established, the craziest thing that we could predict, like, is Ceres being right? And like, what if she is? Yeah. I also think, like, there's going to be enough ambiguity. Like, a lot of people seem to feel the Valancar is very strongly, like, of one very obvious thing. And I feel like knowing George, he might make it a little more ambiguous than that, right? Like, is Tyrion leading armies against his sister who he has weakened politically,
33:44 strategically for a year? Like, is that not killing her in some aspects? Is him bringing about the circumstances which have wrought her like into this position? Is that not him killing her too? Right? I don't know. I don't know what's going to happen. So you're not wrong. He could be There's that and like, I mean, it definitely could be, it definitely could be Jamie, right? Like, as the blindsiding her and also since had these books not had this long of a gap between them, maybe many of us would not have remembered that Jamie is technically the younger brother of Circe, right, in terms of their twinship. But, and like there is like a parallel there of, you know, what are they exploring in regards to violence against women, et cetera? That could be
34:34 happening in the series of it is like Jamie or like domestic violence I guess if it is Jamie but if it is Tyrion I think there's something interesting there too like a lot of the way that tragedy works and the way that prophecy functions within tragedy is that there is an irony right where someone the more that they try to run away from it the more they kind of bring the tragedy they bring the prophecy about and like seriously being like wow I really hate Tyrion I think he's going to kill my family, so I'm going to be, like, heinous to him is kind of what makes him want to kill her. I'm just making shit up right now. We're, like, spitballing in this moment, by the way, everyone. But I'm, like, kind of convinced by you. It's kind of disgusting the way that you are.
35:19 I just am just playing devil's advocate here for seriously being right. I mean, honestly, it's anyone's game of Thrones. Oh, my God. I actually said that earlier today. I was like, what? I was like, you have no idea how many times I've said that over the years. Countless, countless. So, fast-forwarding, Circe and Tyrion don't think that the brothers, the Barathean brothers, will be reconciling anytime soon because they are very different and also very alike, as Eliana pointed out. And also, Circe drops the tea that Stannis has spent years resenting Robert for giving Storm's end to, Brenley. And apparently, she kind of says it's an intentional slight. Yeah, Tyrion's all, like, he took that a slight and seriously, like, it definitely was. And it's worth noting that George R.
36:13 Martin has actually said in a So Spake Martin that Robert had a careless generosity and that this wasn't entirely meant as a slight. Could it be interpreted as one? Could it be? Maybe. But Robert might have actually done it in earnest, according to that So Spake Martin. And it reveals to us, I think how the Lannisters, especially Sirce, approach gifts and actions, because she interprets it as a slight, right? Like, no good deed is done without it meaning something else from the Lannisters, which I only am putting together now because, Chloe, as you pointed out, Tyrion's only really being nicer so we can poison her right now. So literally. Very much, you know, all of Uron's gifts are poisoned. Robert saw giving Stannis the ancestral seat as as truly a gift, right?
36:59 this was the ancestral seat of the heir to the throne of Dragonstone. He was like, well, that means you're the heir, all right? Which, like, I guess Robert wasn't thinking about the fact that he's supposed to have kids, but Robert was never thinking ahead. We all know this. I mean, he was thinking with Ahead. That's true. Ahead, just not forward thinking, you know?
37:21 Up and down thinking, up and down, inside out, whatever prepositional phrase you want to go with. Sorry. Oh, my God. Yeah. But, yeah, it was meant for him. But also it's like, I mean, like even from the Navy, right? Yeah. All of that was meant for Stannis, like, idiot.
37:42 And I don't know, there was also something interesting that you said in that that reminds me that the rebellion might have said they were all for, like, destroying the reign of terror of the Targaryans. But Robert rewarded his brother with the honors that the Targaryans honored each other with. So again, pointing to like, okay, you still have to rely on your Targaryen side for your blood that lets you sit on this throne. And also, like, for all I dislike Stannis, he seems more suited to the idea of abolishing Targaryan politics, right? Like, I don't know. Maybe that's just me, but he doesn't seem to practice all of the queer Targaryen customs or honor those things. So it's kind of interesting to see it, like, played backwards that Robert was still honoring this custom, even though they're trying to get as far away. from the Targs now as you can.
38:31 That's true. Like that was the whole point. The whole point of that entire, like, campaign is like, you know, he is not a Targaryen. Part Targaryen, but not a Targaryen. He brings them up, like, sometimes, but they don't, like, live rent-free in his head, like they did for Robert, you know?
38:48 Yeah, yeah. Because Roberts, I guess, living Rent-Free and Stennis's head. Never mind. Yeah, exactly, exactly. There's no room for the Targaryans because of Roberts. And the murder The murder and his brother's peach I will say when you said reign of terror
39:07 I was like oh yes yes The war on terror that Robert has never like a true true They toast to brotherly love Aw They toast to Philadelphia Wow Yeah And hope that the Baratheans battle long and hard
39:23 While pouring the wine I should check if my wine's got like some powder, like the kind that Tyrion has slipped. No, I don't think like, it would be really inconvenient. We only have one bathroom. It would be so inconvenient if I had diarrhea tomorrow. Anyways, Tyrion quietly slips powder into Circe's cup. For a moment, laughing and beautiful. She almost looks like the Circee that Jamie probably sees. And then Tyrion's like, dang, I almost feel bad about poisoning her. Almost. Almost. Yeah. And I'm like, he gave her a juice cleanse. Yeah
39:57 That's what they're like Is my understanding I don't know if this is what they're like I think I hear it's like a lot of pooping And peeing or something Yeah I don't know Yeah
40:10 He does poison His sister Yeah And I'm aware That I have defended the actions of Tyrion in the past So some of those at home Maybe looking for an explanation, an apology, or understanding in this moment, and I just can't give it to you.
40:32 I still support him. And Circe, it's very polarizing. I understand. I feel like, I don't know, do siblings, like, sneak weird shit into each other's food? Is this, like, the time that... I can't tell if this is a real story that happened or not. Someone telling that, like, their sibling, hey, this is toothpaste, but it's, like, hemorrhoid cream. I feel like someone told me they did that
40:57 Who told you? I don't know, it's not me though because I don't have a sibling really that could happen with so it wasn't me Yeah So I'm an innocent Um Innocente
41:09 Yeah But maybe it's like the same Except worse So I'm not trying to defend anyone I'm just trying to understand siblings Anyways I mean like The point is Tyrion's not a good person
41:21 Right? Like Tyrion poison's a lot of people. I think like Sircy's one of them. Okay. He also poisons nurse. He's like, I don't know. Nurse was going to die anyway. And I'm like, okay, but like, I don't know. And this is with the mushrooms. But why is it your call?
41:36 Right. But Jumbo's just like, oh, mushroom. Speaking of fire and blood a little. Uh, mushroom. Anyways, I guess, like, it doesn't really help his case in terms of everyone to be like, so you poisoned Joffrey, right? Because, like, maybe if you, like, didn't go around, you know, just like, poisoning. spiking drinks, right?
41:56 He loves to poison. Yeah. He just loves to poison, but also he's not the only one. And interestingly, as often as it's called a woman's weapon, sometimes like the woman might be like the vehicle or the medium, but the person really wielding poison for their ends
42:14 is never really a woman, I think, in this series. Well, the exception of Aria, but whatever. Right. She's a girl. Well, I think Liza is doing it on behalf of Littlefinger, right? So I don't see it as her necessarily. Does that make sense? And the marital rate.
42:32 Brought against John Aaron, you mean? Yeah, I mean, like, you know. I guess I see her- In the decades of having coercive sex because she had to. A lot of women apparently did that. I don't know. I don't know, like, back then they'd be like, I'm going to the apothecary to go, like, poison my husband.
42:50 I'm like, okay. I probably didn't really consider it. I don't know why I'm saying, okay, like, chill. Yeah, poison. Definitely not pro-poisoning men is what we're loudly trying to repeat for anyone listening. So I'm glad that we've covered that. Yeah, there's also something going on, like that intersection of like disability and women, something, something, something, right? Tyrion kind of meeting at that intersection, albeit he's not a woman.
43:25 woman, not a girl, not yet a woman, but he is, you know, disabled and seem kind of on that similar similar crossroads in some aspect. So something to think on, something to think on. Well, I think that's the thing that like stands out to me, right? Because again, like, Liza's kind of doing this on behalf of Little Finger's plot. The people who use poison in ways that I think stand out in the storyline, it's often people who, like, they're those gender outcasts. because of that arguably because they don't fit the mold of masculinity. It's usually men who don't fit or aren't able to quite grasp it in that way. Yeah.
44:06 Yeah. Interesting. Fascinating. Interesting. Fascinating. Or I guess even the next morning. The locusts, you know, probably man poisoned those locusts if you think about it. Maybe.
44:18 Maybe. Or it was, you know, there could have been someone. The green grace. I don't know. know. Could have been her. Could have been her. True. Will we ever find anyway? No. So the next morning, predictably
44:34 Circe is indisposed, allowing Tyrion to handle Sir Cleos and Rob Stark's peace terms all on his own. Tyrion holds court from the Iron Throne, and he does enjoy the height and the authority, maybe a little much, maybe a little much. Pride goeth, they say,
44:50 before the fall. I don't know if you've heard this. It's autumn. It's autumn. Men on the Iron Throne fall faster than most is how I feel reading this. When I'm rereading this, I'm like, ooh, Tyrion, you're climbing those steps to that barbed, terrible throne, which we get this great description of it. The Iron Throne of Egan the Conqueror was a tangle of nasty barbs and jagged metal teeth waiting for any fool who tried to sit too comfortably. And the steps made his stunted legs cramp as he climbed up to it. all too aware of what an absurd spectacle he must be. Yet there was one thing to be said for it.
45:30 It was high. Sick. So sick. Love that. Also a certain poetry to like the Erie chapters, where when you're in there with Tyrion, you feel like you're somewhere where it was designed by gods, right? A bowling alley for gods.
45:43 It's just so large, so empty, giant ceilings. Must be how, like, Rome feels. I have not gone to Rome. I know many listeners have, et cetera, etsua. just, you know, it feels like, I feel like a place that was just a mess that's made by the gods that you look around and you're like, we don't belong here. It does, it sounds like that. And I'm curious, I don't know.
46:06 It's cool that they kind of brought that aspect of it back in the shows too. And this language of looked down on them all, right, really stands out to me. Like, I think that this is one of them all like Circe. You know, Turin is one of the very few. POVs, especially at this point in the book, so we get, who sits on the iron throne itself and look down on them all, like,
46:30 you can see that it's not just about the height. Like, he does, whether or not he's on the iron throne. You can see in the way he treats people. He does pretty much look down on them. It's how the Lannisters are raised to be. And I do think, interestingly, he's like, wow, I really wish She could have seen all this, because
46:46 turns out she asked to, we haven't seen She in a while. But she wanted to come here and that's probably because she also was like, please let me out of the house because she's a glorified prisoner right now. Many such cases in King's Landing. That's true. She's not the only one.
47:05 Sons is here too, also a glorified prisoner. But everyone knows. Everyone knows she's a prisoner. They're pretty open about it, I think. It's not... Things are bad. Things are very bad. It's people...
47:21 Well, for us, too, if you think about it. Yeah. Shit. Tyrion formally rejects Rob's peace offer and sends back some intentionally impossible counterterms. Rob must surrender, swear fealty, return to Winterfell, release Jamie, and also put his army under Jamie's command against Runley and Stanis. Every northern bannerman must also provide a child as hostage. I feel like everyone's always just... That's just typical, I guess.
47:55 Yeah, it is kind of typical of like resolving something. I think it's also very clear. Like, these terms are very stern for people that haven't won. You know what I mean? I'm like, you guys haven't won. So it's very interesting. It's a little early to be making this kind of thing. But arguably, so like, I'm going to take a page out of Eliana's book and go a little devil's advocate.
48:21 Yes. Fuck the Lanister regime of the throne, Northern Independence. But there's also another mind of like something we see going very poorly is that there isn't any North presence at court. There's a small contingency that Ned has brought with him. And it's not very strong. You don't have other Northern Lords really with him. There's no power behind it. It's very easy to just kill the Lord of the North.
48:51 They find out for a minute. You know, like, yeah, the war. But, but. Yeah, the word. killed him. Whatever. Yeah, the war, but they did just, like, strike him down in front of gods and men. Like, it was nothing. Like, he was, like, a Plato toppling off of a stand, a Plato ball. So, like, all that said, with that at mind, I'm not saying, like, they should, by gunpoint, have these children of the North go there. That's not what I'm saying. Saying in other terms,
49:20 when, you know, we had a say and politicking was happening, it could be. behoove you to have strength at court behind you and have, you know, bringing that culture to court. I look at a lot of the times of, you know, it took a very long time for the Dornish to become accepted in the kingdoms in general. But over time, they were somewhat very much ingrained, though they still experienced a lot of xenophobia at court from, you know, their nation being conquered into it. So looking at the north, like, I don't know, yeah, not good. Look at the Rojars, right? Like, that was a shit show. Obviously, you know, they had different banking standards than Westeros.
50:01 We don't have to get into it. Some would call it fraud and embezzlement. Not me. I wouldn't call it fraud and embezzlement. I'm on their side. No, I'm just kidding. But all that said, like, yeah, that didn't turn out great. So, I don't know.
50:15 Very interesting, like, especially considering that right now, Tyrion is partnering with Dorn so heavily. right, he's like Doren, Dorn, Dorn putting his eggs in the Dorn basket, and Dorn's about to come to the table and not cause issues, but, you know, stir some shit up and not be the ally he thinks they're going to be, right? This could have been the North. You could have had that with the North before. Yeah, I mean, like, everything that you're saying, it's very much kind of like when Mary Queen of Scots came to the French court with a contingency of people named Lola and Greer, and I don't actually remember the names of the other characters,
50:56 even though they're pretty big characters. Kenna? And the girl who, Spoilers, dies. I don't remember her name because she dies. Really early. Wait, no, little blondie with the brain. Yeah, really early. She dies really early.
51:12 Why can't I think of her name? She's so dead. She's dead. So. That's Malara Heather Spoon. Wait, actually? Falls down a while, literally. Anyway, so it's just, it's the same.
51:25 Yeah, it is the same. Tyrion, as you said, there's going to be more of a Dornish presence soon because Dorenne Martel has accepted Marcella's betrothal to Tristan, which again, just like Mary Queen of Scott being patrothed to Prince Francis, publicly strengthening the Lancaster position. Tristan. I'm sick of it. I'm so sick of it with you. Do you regret getting into this show?
51:49 I don't know yet. I don't know yet. We've actually been lagging. We're still very much at the beginning of season two after like breezing through season one. Oh my God. Tyrion does offer some concessions. Heron Carstark
52:04 and Willis Mandurley for Willem, Lannister, Ann Kerwin, and Donald Locke for Ty and Frey. Because naturally two Lannisters are worth for Northmen. This is not what they're saying in the North. They're telling me the opposite in the North. Just FYI.
52:21 Yeah, booing and hissing. Rob can have Ned's bones as a gesture of good faith. Honestly, probably a good idea. Like, don't keep that with you. That's probably, like, going to curse you. And Ice and the Stark Girls, though, they're going to stay in Kings Landing until Jamie is safely returned. Rip Ice.
52:39 It's also pretty awkward considering that Tyrion is still hoping that Jasselin Bywater finds Aria before Rob weren't said. We actually have no idea where she is. We do not have her. Cannot trade Yep There's this line that really Start out to be on this reread
52:56 And especially like considering where we are in the book right now Tyrion glanced towards Sonsa And felt a stab of pity as he said Until such time as he frees my brother Jamie unharmed They Shall Remain Hero's Hostages How well they are treated depends on him Yikes So using the daughters as coin
53:18 once more, right? You have the Mercela as coin, Sonsa as coin, but also, the next Sonsa chapter is Sonsa 3, where she's beaten in court. And then he steps in and he's like, my lady, like, you know, I'm so sorry that this happened to you. This will never happen to you again. But like, he was the one who just publicly said it. He was the one who condemned her publicly. He literally, in this chapter says, how well they are treated depends. on him in this chapter and then Joffrey, just like with Robert framing like how Joffrey copies
53:54 Robert, Joffrey that in Sons of 3 is like, how dare you and your brother did this and now you're being beat. That's according to you and your class and who you are here. Yeah. So, Tyrion, that's the mess you fucking made. Yeah. I think Tyrion doesn't really think through
54:10 necessarily the weight of his words and actions sometimes like that, as many novels don't. Yeah. But I think when he said that, he's like, dude, I meant like maybe she wouldn't, you know, she wouldn't get like the best chicken, right? Or like, she would have like a slightly shittier room. Not that. Well, and that's why leadership needs to communicate more clearly.
54:33 Like, I'm sick of it. No, for real. But also, I guess they've just been like, how can we not? Lack of clarity, lack of direction. Like, how can we keep from communicating with Joffrey so that he just simply is not involved? Yeah, that's fair. It's absolutely fair. Just cut him out. You got to do that sometimes with leadership. CEOs are CEOs, man. Yep.
54:57 Well, Tyrion makes his move. Clios will have a proper Lannister escort back to River Run. So Tyrion orders Vilar, to take all 100 of Circe's red cloaks. Paisal immediately protest. He's like, whoa, it's time and send those men specifically to protect Sarah C and her children. And Toreans like, well, the Kingsguard and the city watch are enough. Goodbye. And... Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
55:28 He's like, fuck them kids. Yeah, no, for real. Honestly, at least one of them, I'm sure, yeah. I will say Tyrion making moves here. And I think it stands out that this is like similar to the chapter, right, where we see Ned also in the throne room, making decisions about like who to send out into the Riverlands. court, whatever. He's making different moves from both Ned and John, where both of them, they tend to send away men that they could trust because they're like, I actually do have an investment
55:58 in this like mission going well. And part of that also is it leaves them unguarded, whereas Tyrion is using this as a way to rid himself of the enemies in the immediate vicinity. And even like Littlefinger calls out, like, I would have made some different choices of who descend out into the Riverlands when he talks to Sonsa, which also is like, get the fuck away. Leave her alone, get a job. Yeah, there's definitely something about that. Like, of course, good leadership always gets fucked, right?
56:30 You send your strongest, you train your team up, you send your strongest managers, and then you get slaughtered for it. Terrible. Terrible. It's hard being a good leader. Before court ends, speaking of leadership, Sir Alasur Thorne finally forces himself, at Eterian's attention after having been ignored for a very long time.
56:52 Yeah. I guess I don't know how long it's been, but it is interesting to me that Eunuch is used by Alasur to insult Varies, considering that Thorne is forced into a position where he's like, he's forced to swear himself to a life of celibacy. but it shows that like regardless of it like there's something there around like what you were saying about manhood, masculinity, and the performance of it. Yes.
57:26 Yes. That stands out a lot and like I will say really fucking funny. Even Littlefinger is like, what the fuck? You can't just call him that. Like that's our eunuch. Like what the fuck? Yeah. That did make me laugh.
57:40 He says he specifically goes. He's like to his face we call him Lord Unic. This seems like a joke that like, you and I would make to people and be like, what the fuck was that? I mean, like, no, to his face. Like, how are you going to just say that? Yeah, it's like, you haven't earned the fucking right yet. Oh, for real.
57:56 Funny as a motherfucker did have me going, but it was interesting. That toxic masculinity. And, of course, again, he talks about how two Rangers were found dead and they brought them back to Castle Black and then got up and started murdering people, right? One of them killed Sir Jeremy Riker while the other tried to kill J.R. Mormont, and it stood out to me this time that, you know, House Riker is brought up trying to invoke some sort of care for a house of the crown lands in the crown. House Riker is of Duskendale, and to jog your memory, they hold the Dunfort where the defiance at Duskendale happened.
58:32 Dun, done, done. So more Aries coming up in this chapter. And, you know, later we do run into more Rikers in Randall and Breanne time on the road. And thinking that we might see. see Randall-Tarly, like, potentially support Agen, it does make me think about, like, the Crown lands being majorly ignored by the Crown right now. That's a huge deal. And that is a pretty strong contingency of folks to have. And also all the ties would tie in right into the defiance at Duskendale and that, you know, you would think House Riker would get a little nod from the Lannisters that sit the throne.
59:10 Yeah. I mean, Barthians. True. Oh my God. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You're great. We would slip.
59:18 We would slip. Every day of my life. If we were in for it. We would get in so much trouble. I will say, first of all, when you called out about Littlefinger, it does make me wonder,
59:29 like, if he heard, like, Janoslin just going about calling Tyrion, like, the imp or, would Littlefinger make a joke also to kind of,
59:40 like, somebody would be like, dude, what the fuck? Probably not He'd be like, yeah, fuck that guy And I will say also like Yeah, it is interesting What's going here?
59:53 I do think It's going to be Randall It's going to be Randall And the show kind of tried to allude to that But they were like, I don't actually know what to do with this Because we cut out this whole character Yeah, it turns out if you cut out like three whole plots Makes it really hard
01:00:10 Makes, yeah, but I don't know, whatever. Themes were for eighth grade book reports, so. And girls gone can. And maybe not anymore, now that were men gone can't. I don't know. It's really, it really makes you think. Really? Well, the court thinks that this is hilarious. And Tyrion actually initially wonders, like, wait, what the fuck?
01:00:32 Am I being pranked? Like, why are you here, Alasor? Why is this the thing that you've come and said to me? and he's wondering if he's trying to be humiliated and although he remembers that strange dread he felt beyond the wall and he actually does believe that J.R. Mormont deserves some consideration. He's like, I don't know, J.R. Mormont wouldn't have sent Alasher all this way for fucking nothing. But unfortunately, Alistair's physical evidence, which was like a dead man's hand. Wait, a dead man's hand and a dead hand?
01:01:08 things are happening here there's a metaphor here for all of the hands and Tyrion you're the hand right now this is an omen pay attention Tyrion anyways you like ghost stories because you're living in one
01:01:23 you like ghost stories go listen to remembering melody later this month anyways that hand rotted away while everyone made him wait so that was very helpful and I am like part of what stands out to me here is Tyrion shows these same fears immediately.
01:01:42 Like, it's so subconscious that it rises to the surface right aware of, like, am I being laughed at, right? Like, I don't think that this is a fear that he always had. I think it's one that was passed down to him by Tywin. Yeah. And especially, like, part of his from Taiwan and also Taiwan didn't, like, really do much to, like, support his son's confidence and mental health, etc. and like...
01:02:05 Yeah, yeah. So Tyrion feels like he has to fight for every crumb of respect, probably because like his dad never did that for him. And it's also like... Because he made them fight for the respect. Yeah. And he was like, Tyrion, you're an embarrassment. I'm like, damn.
01:02:19 They literally put him in a dog cage, dude. No, he wanted that. He liked it. He actually liked it. You liked it. We're not actually talking about Tyrion here, you guys. We're talking about Roman Roy. Um, no, Tyrion Lister.
01:02:37 No, Tyrion is Kendall. He's both. Interesting. I think him and Jamie are a good mix of both. There's a lot to unpack here. Um, I will say, and like the way that Tyrion's afraid that everyone's laughing at him is in contrast, as you were saying, right? You fall hard. To like how he felt so on top of the world, like a second ago.
01:02:58 And I'm also like, bro, maybe you should have just like kept a better handle on your calendar, right? maybe you should have met Alasor in private. Like, you couldn't have been, you don't have email. No one's, like, texting you all the time to tell you, you have to meet this deadline now. Right. You had time. You had time to meet Alcer. If I can strive and, like, not hit all of my KPIs, but really strive for it, you can too, Tyrion.
01:03:23 And then also, part of what finally convinces him, like, okay, like, I should, I should probably take this a little seriously. He remembers John, and he's like, but that, like, didn't really mean. anything, right? But he's like, but maybe it did. Because John, he's like, actually saw Tyrion as a person and an equal, right? Because he couldn't buy John in the way that he's like bought all these other people, right? They're of a similar level in class in a lot of ways. And like, that thought grounds Tyrion. And he's like, can't mean nothing. And so again, it really stands out to me on this POV reread, this last POV reread. I'm like, what's a good? gonna be like when John and Tyrion reunite because I don't think we got it like I don't think we
01:04:09 really got a catharsis around that in the show we also didn't get the catharsis of them like caring for one another or why they would right like you just don't understand why they would be on similar footing there's a lack of that so I really do look forward to getting a little more gratification out of that also again that he like considers this as snarks and grumpkins and then he considers like there now that I've done this They can't just say I shrugged it off and that I don't believe in Snarks and Grumpkins. That's true.
01:04:38 Like he does think about it. He's like, I feel like John and J.R. wouldn't lie to me. And like, there's something in that. And also I'm like, I mean, Tyrion's about to see some crazy shit too in book five. And I'm like... Also, like, that Ned had similar, right? You think back to Ned in book one. And he executed the deserter.
01:04:59 But for just a moment, he wondered. He wondered, what if it's real? And Tyrion's having that moment. This does hold more weight for him. And I think also like, I don't know, it's sweet. You know, a 27-year-old man whose best friend is like 14. Yo, show up at work like, where's Mr. Tyrion today? My favorite meme.
01:05:21 So Tyrion publicly ends up turning this entire thing into a joke for the court. He orders Littlefinger to buy Alice or 100 spades, because if the Knights Watch Berries it's dead properly, maybe they'll stop watching. walking around. He also gives Alicer his pick of prisoners from the city dungeons or anyone desperate enough to join the watch for bread. Alicester is kind of furious at being mocked, but Tyrion points out he came asking for men and Tyrion gave him men.
01:05:49 Yeah, okay. So I will say like in a way everything Tyrion does here, it is pretty deftly done, which is exactly what varies says in a few lines, which in my opinion, side note, really speaks to George's ability as a writer to create very natural sounding dialogue. It was something that I've been thinking about recently. Like, I've always appreciated that about George,
01:06:15 and it probably also comes out of his background as a screenwriter. But I've been reading, like, some short stories. I'm not going to, like, put this person on a blast. Because I do like the stories, but reading that dialogue and thinking about what I'm used to from other authors, including George, I'm like... It really makes you appreciate George. No, it's hard.
01:06:34 It really is hard. Once you've had George, it's like, what else do you read? There is other great stuff. Like, don't get me wrong. Yeah. But sometimes you bite into a burger and you're like, man, I want my favorite burger. No, that's true. I do feel that way about real burgers.
01:06:48 Not that. Not the metaphor. Just like literally about burgers. No, there's no place like home, right? Yeah. In the metaphorical sense. I would say like humor, ironically, we've talked a lot about courtesy
01:07:04 being ladies' armor and Tyrion talking to John about like armor yourself and this despite Tyrion's fear about laughter etc like humor is his armor right like it's his way of kind of playing into people's expectations the way that Danny says I'm but a young girl who knows little of the ways of war this is Tyrion's way of doing that and I think he does a good job of making it so that people are laughing to an extent with him. Yes, at the expense of Alessor. And, like, he even
01:07:35 reminds us of that ability when he makes a callback to that crab fork joke from book one and how he, like, defuse the situation back then with Alicester. He's very good at diffusing the situation with it, but sometimes it does make him look like a dick. It's hard to calibrate sometimes as a person who's very funny myself. Yeah, and I don't know, especially at his age. Like, I will say 27. There's also, yep. And there's something kind of like cocky about it in a way that when you're 27, you also don't realize that you're an asshole. Like that it's, you don't need to just make jokes about everything all the time.
01:08:15 Sometimes things just are like you can just sit back and not react. You know, sometimes you don't need to be making a joke about everything. And like here he does kind of put himself in a corner. He does lose the plot a little bit, right? he thinks to at one point a dwarf enjoyed at best a tenuous hold on dignity once the court and kingdom started to laugh at him he was doomed and i think his like you mentioned his self-consciousness and his father's voice playing over and over in his head that is his downfall right like he is so obsessed and self-critical with those things yeah i do like that you called that out though because i don't think he's wrong in saying that and it has it has to do partially with this dwarfism
01:09:03 but in general when people are laughing at you at you and not in like a fun way you've lost it you've lost respect and it is hard to control people it is hard to hold onto power
01:09:17 if people do not respect you and I think like you can see the vectors of respect and how that works in Tyrion's chapter really well like clearly he doesn't fucking respect to you. I don't know that there are very few people. I think that Tyrion actually respects. And I kind of wonder if we would see that also if we had like a varies and little
01:09:37 finger POV. Like if you've had to fight and like really fucking fight and earn respect, it'd be hard to just give it away. Willy-nilly. Yeah. No, that makes sense. I mean, you think of why Tywin is the way he fucking is. He clawed, ha, clawed his way up with his father. You know, like... Snaps, saps. Thank you. I mean, you can see it. And speaking of, they mentioned that the king is busy playing with his mirish crossbow,
01:10:07 which shoots three quarrels at a time. It feels important because, I don't know, maybe it's not this crossbow specifically, but we do have a crossbow in Tyrion's plot that becomes semi-important, you know, in the next book. There's also something that Jamie says in a storm of swords that, I don't know, crossbows become, like, increasingly important. and Jamie in a storm of sword says the crossbow is a cowardly weapon and then fast forward and we have the red wedding
01:10:35 with all the crossbows and killing people we have Tyrion with the crossbow with his father and we have of course the crossbows at the wall against the free folk and just all sorts of shit with crossbows going on and I don't know again if it's Joffrey's crossbow it might just be a random one, but his father is found, right? His room has a lion-headed mace, a pole axe, and a crossbow hung on the walls. So there's something interesting to think, like, if it's Joffrey's crossbow and Tywin's been coveting it,
01:11:10 because the king kind of grows bored of it after he threatens Sonsa with it in Sonsa 3. So my little head canon is that that is the crossbow that Joffrey was killing people, animals, etc., with this free time. Oh, that's interesting. It actually might be. It's like my little head cannon. Like it makes sense because Tywin like, you know, Joffrey's bored of his toy. Tywin comes back, takes the king's toys away from him. They were always Tywin's toys anyway.
01:11:36 He's like, maybe you shouldn't keep this around. And he's like, if you were brave, Joffrey, you should have used a gun. Not the Valerian steel gun. A valerian steel gun. The revolver. Well, good. Varies immediately understands what Tyrion. just did. He returned Ned's
01:11:57 bones while making a show generosity. Should Circe of her personal guard, gave the the Knights watch, desperately needed recruits, and removed hungry mouths from Kings Landing. He also made the undead story look like a joke so nobody could accuse the dwarf of fearing
01:12:13 snarks and grumpkins. And honestly, you know, in the words of Chloe, efficient meeting, did it need to be an email? And I will say... Did it real quick, real good. Boom, boom, boom. Yeah, part of me is like, I do feel like it was very deftly done, but also I'm like, is very just glazing him and I'm blind because I'm in Terrance BV, but I'm also like,
01:12:36 it was good, right? I don't think it was, though, because he does really good in the short term, but these are not good long-term choices. Okay, but like he didn't have a gun. Like, what did you want from him? Like, he makes these peace terms and he's like, yeah, sure, whatever. and, you know, if Rob fucks up, they'll beat Sonsa, good luck. And then she's beat in the very next Sonsa chapter.
01:12:59 Like I'm just saying, like, there are direct correlations to, like, results from Tyrion's politicking. It's not all good. Some of it has a couple of good little, like, spicy bits where you're like, okay, nice, but to your points earlier, a lot of it is done out of spite. Yeah. Some of it's just, like, I'm trying to get back in my sister for sure. Yeah.
01:13:20 And that's probably why, I guess. Little fingers less impressed. He's like, so I heard that Marcell is having this Dornish marriage because you just announced it. And he's like, why would you lie to me
01:13:36 about her marrying Robert Aaron? And Teryna apologizes claiming like, you know, I didn't really even know that Dorn would accept. I just like was just sending DM seeing what would happen. See him what would stick? Yeah, a little. Finger warns him not to include him in the next deception.
01:13:56 And Teryan's like, okay, same, but he doesn't say it aloud. He's just thinking it as he looks at Littlefinger's dagger and is like, sure, if you extend me the same courtesy, because you know what? That's very valid. Taryn got a whole lot of kidnapped and almost died because of your lies, Littlefinger. But literally, though, like, interesting game being played. And also that Littlefinger almost has a modicom of respect for it. him now it seems, right?
01:14:24 Yeah, that's true. Oh, now we're playing on the same playing field is what it feels like. He's like, we call him Lord Imp to his face. Yeah. Kind of fun to consider, like, Tyrion has now poisoned
01:14:42 Varus's trophy, which is Egan for the throne, and also Little Figures trophy to the throne or to power of Sansa, so like there's also a path to Sansa in some aspects. So, like, he has holds against them. They just don't maybe see it yet. Yeah.
01:15:01 I think, George. I do want to see how those holds play out, because, again, I think, like, part of a lot of a song of vice and fire is, like, a pawn to player. Not that Tyrion's necessarily only a pawn, but, like, for him as well, being coming a various little finger, like, character. but for Danny and Tyrion then tells Varies like the real reason all 100 red cloaks need to go to River Run
01:15:32 and Braun is found four specialists for him for the Italian job a thief, a poisoner, a mummer and a murderer and he's going to address them as Lannister guards because it's Halloween and hide them among
01:15:46 100 real soldiers escorting Ned's bones four suspicious strangers would be watched but four men among a hundred can disappear and the plan is clearly an attempt to get agents inside Riveron to help re-janie me. This is actually kind of the Italian job-ish.
01:16:06 The title, the way that he describes it, it reminds me of this movie, The Cook, the Thief, his wife, his lover. It's a crime, drama, art film. It's really good. It's Peter Greenway and Richard Barringer and Michael Gambin are in it. It's amazing. It's 1989 though. So do you recommend, but it's just
01:16:23 the way you said it, it reminds me of that. Also, this is like very proto-faced man, right? Like, all of this is very reminding me of faceless men, reminds me of hot D a little bit with the Riverlands plot. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Interesting. I was thinking, like, it does remind me of, like, not quite fire in blood, but, like, I guess, kind of. But also, like, Egan said, me, like, I'm going to send this person. I'm going to send this person. I'm going to send it. one of the twins to Dragonstone. There you go. Brilliant.
01:17:00 I was thinking of Heron Hall with killing the Strongs. I try not to think about that. It was terrible. It was so sad. Fucking sad. I'm looking forward to that too. If they will, if the show will give us any sort of reveal on, like, Lary's motives around that. And I think that they will.
01:17:25 Hmm. I look forward to that I think they will And regarding the proto Faceless Man stuff This is like actually This is a Faceless Man thing But like someone who fits all four of those descriptions
01:17:38 The Poisoner, Mummer, Murderer Is Aria She's all of those Yes Arya spy master arc Arya spy master arc And like of course She's like, it's fun because like it's also very
01:17:54 Various so like that cross-section for Aria, that seems significant that she could be a Varus-esque character. Exactly. We've been saying this. We're always saying this. We are always saying this. So something that Vary's isn't always saying, but he does explain here is that Circe, sure. He'll explain it to her as she's losing her guards for Jamie's sake, but various things that seriously is still going to feel vulnerable without them, which like, you know, valid.
01:18:31 But Tyrion wants her to feel uneasy. Cleos departs that afternoon with Ned's bones, Rob's men, Vilar, 100 real red cloaks, and four fake ones hidden among them. That night, Tyrion tells timid and Shaga to stay relatively sober and keep their weapons ready. It is a black moon, which Tyrion calls a traitor's moon. Hold on, sorry, you guys. A baseball thing that I learned from, like, some commercial. Apparently, there are more home runs during a full moon than not.
01:19:08 Isn't that interesting? I guess. Hmm. I guess. I was reading something semi in that vein recently about horoscopes and Olympic medal winners that I found fascinating. of just like what signs are the highest Olympic medal winners. Okay. Like your Capricorns, your Virgos, your Ares.
01:19:35 All right. I guess for this one I was thinking, it was like, it makes sense because the moon's like gravitational pull pulls like the ball. I don't know, but I'm like, is that why we did so bad? My God. Because it was a waxing crescent moon.
01:19:53 Anyways. Should have been waxing on. Not waxing. Oh. Dude, I'm just like waxing. I'm just waiting away. Uh, Shaga boasts that his axe is so sharp. He once cut off a man's head.
01:20:09 And the man only noticed when he tried to brush his hair. Ha ha ha. Tyrion asks, does that explain your grooming choices, Shaga? Ha ha ha ha. Um, we're funny. We're laughing. We have all this dialogue. It's fun.
01:20:21 At midnight, Tyrion and the Klansmen break into Paisal's chambers and find him naked in bed with a serving girl. The girl gets sent away, despite Shagga briefly volunteering, to give her a strong child. Their actual target, of course, is Paisal. Yeah, so, I don't know. When I was reading this, I was like, oh, yeah, that's right. There's that. Because I was like, did I imagine Paisal doing stuff to people?
01:20:46 No, he's a creeper. No, this did happen. So I was like, fuck, this makes me, like, not feel bad for him anymore. But then, you know, again, going back to the conversation. should be at earlier, I guess. And he felt up Sonsa. It's a feature, not a bug. Yeah. Yeah. I do think that is real that he actually did do that. So I'm just like,
01:21:08 but he's not actually being punished for that. And I don't know. I do feel, as I said earlier, just go like... You try to make excuses for a man of another generation and this is what happens. I'm not like making excuses, but it's just like he should therefore be punished for that, you know? And he's not. which is why I'm kind of like, I guess, and especially when, again, we'd liken it to the Circee scene. The shooting scene does feel bad.
01:21:35 I don't know. Elder abuse, but also he's doing sexual abuse. So, dude, you guys, I got a call earlier today. Allegedly it was from Kaiser Permanente, but it was some, like, it was some robot asking me about, like, my contributions to Medicare and asking if I want to make more to my Medicare plan. And you guys, I'm not that fucking old. I don't have a Medicare plan. As old as you all might think I am, I don't have one. And I think that there's a special place in hell for people who scam seniors.
01:22:06 That's all. Yeah, it's evil. It's literally evil. It's like the one thing you don't do. I was like, this is the devil's work. That's it. Tyrion reveals the purpose of his earlier three-way misinformation trap. and Vary's was told
01:22:25 Tyrion plan to send Tom into Dorn Littlefinger was told Marcella would marry Robert Aaron Only Paisal received a real proposal about Marcella marrying Tristan Martel Since that is what
01:22:38 Circe learned and Paisala's league And Paisal's like no no Beres leaked it and he's like no I just told it like he's like it's impossible Okay it couldn't have been varies And because lying under interrogation is not one of the citadals required courses as Chloe has pointed out
01:22:56 because she did a deep analysis on the chain links he doesn't have one of the required courses yeah Paisal immediately Lou was like it's Baris it's Baris no you're the leak motherfucker we caught you fair and square yeah I will say like this stood out to me now on a movie he keeps trying to pin it on Bears and he's like I could tell you things
01:23:18 that would chill your blood about him and I'm like wait do you think that he knew about the little birds, and that's why he was already dead when Kevin found him. Beres was like, fuck you. Fuck you for trying to like air all my shit out. Yeah, you should just let your ass get handed to you for during this and take it. Yeah, so I think like maybe Paisal did know like Berries's weird ass scheme. And I, knowing all that, I'm just like, Tari, and you are in over your head and you have no idea
01:23:48 how in over your head you are. At least he never trusted him, right? And there's definitely something about Vary's that, like, you wouldn't trust at first, right? If you're just like a guy on the small council, you can see why Varyce might come off as a little odd to you. He dresses differently, speaks differently, presents himself differently, keeps different company. Like, so of course he's a little off-putting. But also, because of that, it's very distracting, right? Like, you can do a lot underneath that surface.
01:24:18 So Teryn's definitely over his head. but here he is living Lovita Loka. He's peak life right now. He has Shaga shaving Paisel's beard with an axe while questioning him. And Paisal eventually admits he's been serving House Lannister and Circe for years, which is fun because, like, Tyrion's interrogating him to tell him the truth and the truth is like, I've served your family. I'm on your sister's side.
01:24:42 Like, what do you want from me? You're on the same team, you dipshits. Like the same team, Team Lannister, the team that you promote, Tyrion. the funniest part, going back to him and Circe, right? Like, fighting the whole time when, like, you guys are literally the same team. And on each other's teams. I'm kind of time. I'm doing a bad job with these lyrics.
01:25:06 Well, so Paisal gives us some history and lore himself. Turns out Paisel was the one who advised Ares to open Kings Landing's gates to Taiwan during the rebellion. Once Rhaegar died, Paisal believed the war was lost and hoped Tywin would become King, though Robert and Ned moved too quickly. Tyrion starts to wonder just how many rulers has Paisal betrayed in the name of House Lannister. Okay, there's this line that sent my ass. Tyrion thinks he had been no more than an ugly boy
01:25:36 at Castorley Rock when the city fell. Oh my God, his own image is so bad. So bad, he's so me for real, though. He didn't need to say an ugly boy. It could have just been like, I was no more than an ugly boy. I was no more than a boy, but he's like, no, an ugly boy. I'm like, what the fuck?
01:25:55 That's real. That's so real. I also love the bit that, like, Agin's highlighted in here, right? Prince Agan was a babe at the breast. The realm needed a king, though. Hmm. Egan. Egan.
01:26:10 Where is he? Yeah, an Agunner? Oh, no. I mean, like, if he were... Paisal, maybe. If he lived... If he lived and the age he would be, yeah, for sure. He would absolutely be in the egg of night.
01:26:23 God. Tyrion decides to keep interrogating and expanding his tactics, and next he pushes on Robert and John Aaron and the truth about them. And Paisal insists that Robert's wounds genuinely killed him, but he makes it really clear that he wouldn't have minded finishing the job, which that's real. Robert was considering setting Circe aside, and Remley was plotting to bring Marjorie to court.
01:26:46 As for John Aaron, Paisal admits that Aaron knew the truth about the twins, and he was preparing to act. He was sending Liza to the Erie and Robert Aaron to Dragonstone for protection. Tyrion accuses Paisal of poisoning John Aaron, especially since Paisal dismissed Aaron's own maister and took over his treatment. Okay, Hoth take, it is actually, in retrospect, a little interesting and surprising to me that Paisal knows all of this. Yeah, like, underestimated him, like very much. underestimated him. Yeah. He doesn't really do much as a player because he's so, like, Team Lanister, but I was like,
01:27:23 oh, I'm fascinated that you knew about Renley's plot. This wasn't, like, that well known. Mm-hmm. And even Renley was trying to be quite about it. He's like, hey, Ned, what do you think about, like, the picture in this locket? That's like, aw, he has the same taste as his brother. No. No, very much different.
01:27:44 Yeah. Ironically. Also, I will say, like, I don't know, I feel bad, because, like, everyone, I don't feel bad, but, like, everyone's catching strays about, like, John Aaron. Everyone's like, so seriously, you did it. Now they're like, Paisal, so you did this right. And, like, Paisal's like, look, I betrayed everyone, except for my one true love, Tywin, which again, Paiwin forever. But. Dead in the ground.
01:28:07 Dead in the ground. Yeah, they did a really good job of covering their tracks, though, but you're starting to get a little bit of the pieces together with the poison. etc. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. It's perfectly placed. And Paisal admits he sent Mastor Coleman away when Coleman was purging John Aaron
01:28:25 because he understood that Circe needed John Aaron dead. Everything he did, he did for Searcy, for House Lannister, wow. Yeah. First of all, it's giving Keith and V being like, I distinctly remember you saying, take care of it.
01:28:41 And I don't think Searcy knew John Aaron was like on them like that. No, she had no clue. Paisal was out there serial killing. Actually, wait, Paisel is kind of a Keith character. That's true.
01:29:01 A little bit, a little bit, yeah. Or something to think about. Paisal swears he did not administer the original poison and instead he blames John Aaron swear. Again, everyone catches strays. and insists like CRC or Varies can confirm it and disgusted. Tyrion has Bicell thrown into the black cells because Paisal just loves to point the finger.
01:29:24 And Baisal keeps insisting that everything he did was for the Lannisters. And Tyrion searches his rooms. Then I don't know, he's just like, I'm going to steal more drugs. Love that for him. Love that for him. And then Teryan is left with kind of an uncomfortable result from this loyalty test, which is like, Paisal was the one he actually kind of hoped he could trust. Verris and Littlefinger aren't really more loyal.
01:29:51 They're just subtler and maybe more dangerous, actually. So for a moment, Tyrion's like, I don't know, maybe I should have gone my dad's approach. Take all three heads and be done with it. I mean, yeah. It's a choice. Ironically, all three of them will die because you have one dead now. Little finger next maybe
01:30:15 And Veris last or vice versa Who knows? Yeah, I can see why he wished Like Paisal was on his side And like in a way he is just not exactly Not in the way he wants, yeah Yeah Like in the grand scheme maybe kind of
01:30:31 I don't know I do We've been talking about this Right Like how Tyrion's just like getting all caught up And varies his web And I think part of it has to do a lot with the fact that Tyrion does see a little bit of himself reflected in Furies, right?
01:30:48 Furies is kind of like him in a lot of ways and that they've both been physically exiled from the ability to grasp like the traditional form of masculinity and power respect through that typical path. And I think though what like actually does make them pretty different though is that Tyrion lacks the exact thing that make both fairies and Littlefinger so dangerous at this point in the story. And Tyrion isn't this at the beginning of the books. Like, fairies and Littlefinger don't have class and nobility, right? They don't have a name in the way that Tyrion does.
01:31:28 And because of that, they're hungry, right? Like, in a way that Tyrion... The ambition. Ambition. They have a chip on their shoulder for various reasons. and like for various, it's probably as to do with growing up in a slave like, he's not exactly a slave as far as we know, but adjacent and then Little Finger, you know, he's got a chip on his shoulder because he's like great Gatsby, reincarnated, and Tyrion. We watch. Well, we see Tyrion this whole chapter.
01:32:01 Like, he confuses love and hate. He confuses love and hate with one another. He does not understand love. he does not understand hatred. He does not understand the nuance. Well, to him, like, he's only seen them as the exact same sides of the coin, the exact same thing, right? Like, from his father, he's like, I mean, my dad loves me, right?
01:32:20 So, like, when he treats me with hate, this must be love. He, of course that would be confused for him. But also, like, I think a lot of it is. If love and hate can mate. Yeah. The first three books of a song of ice and fire are us seeing how that he gets that chip on his shoulder, how he becomes hungry. And I think, like, that's the contrast between, you know,
01:32:41 Little Finger varies in Paisal, because, like, I don't know who Paisel was before all this. Like, why are you such a Tawin Stan? Right? But also, like, Paisel existed within, like, in some ways outside the bounds of the usual system of power, because he is a maister, et cetera, kind of like Alicer. So it's cool that we get Alicester in this chapter.
01:33:03 You get a couple of different men with, like, different ways in which the system has emasculated them. Hell, uh, Lansel at the beginning. True, true, true, true. That's a good point. And like, Parcell's just, he's happy to continue propping it up,
01:33:20 right? Vary's, and I'm not going to say like, varies is like, I'm going to overthrow. He's not a revolutionary. He's got an investment in toppling the current regime just to put like the exact same kind of system up. But with like his candidate, little fingers got his own goals. and yeah, I think the entire series is about,
01:33:39 we're watching Tyrion's goals change over the whole series. Yeah, as he also, like, understands what love actually means in some ways, he's never gotten to. True, yeah. I guess the closest he's gotten is, like, this is going to sound sad with John. John, Tysha. Oh, that's right, Tisha. Yeah, that's sad.
01:34:03 Damn. Yeah. And Jamie. Playing at love. Jamie does, does both, yes. Love him. Yeah. In his own way.
01:34:16 Yeah. He's fucked up, too. Yeah. I mean, like, fucked up people can still love people, you know? I know, I do. It's crazy. It's crazy the shit that I do. I'm out here loving.
