INDIANAPOLIS COLTS TRADE DEFOREST BUCKNER | THE FIRE SALE CONTINUES
00:00 The Indianapolis Colts have shipped off another cornerstone player, sending to Forrest Buckner back to the San Francisco 49ers for a fourth round pick. Let's get to it. You are Locked on Colts, your daily Indianapolis Colts podcast. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome back to Locked on Colts. I'm Zach Hicks. That's Jake Arthur, and we're with you guys for a second time today because the Colts have made yet another move this time sending DeForest Buckner back to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2027 fourth round
00:43 pick. The Colts, I believe, are up to like 10 picks now in the 27 draft, and that's without having their first round selection. And I expect that to be even more draft selections here by the end of the day even. So before we have another breaking news thing come, we're going to dive into this episode. We're going to talk about what comes next for the Indianapolis Colts. who else could be shipped out later today, even, or maybe in the next couple of weeks. We're going to talk about how it's officially Tommy Time in Indianapolis, hopefully for the future, like next couple years, but at least for the rest of this season. But first, we're going to react to the DeForest Buckner trade.
01:19 So, Jake, I'll give you the floor because I already talked earlier about Quentin Nelson, so I'll give you the floor to talk about DeForest Buckner. But definitely an expected move by the Colts, and I think it was one that absolutely needed to happen after what we've done. after what we saw on Sunday where not only was Buckner outperformed by his backup, but also kind of out hustled by his backup in that game. And I think this opens a door for a player that the Colts really need an extended look at to get more playing time.
01:47 So while it is a bit sad to see that Buckner is on the move, it is a trade that needed to happen today because it is time for Tommy to get his snaps on Sunday. Yeah. As you guys may have seen me tweet earlier, that is now two of the four players with banners outside Lucasoil Stadium that have been dealt today. But no, this, you know, you feel for Buckner that it didn't work out here. And the fact that they did have both Quentin Nelson and DeForest Buckner at the same time and really never got anything for it is just insane. But yeah, I, it is a bittersweet day because, I mean,
02:26 I think a lot of people watch this show because they are very much like us where we're very invested in the offseason roster team building process. So for the fact that you get another draft pick to add to that, that's very intriguing. But this is a player where, you know, he was just wasting here. You know, like he's playing some of the best ball of his career right now. He's going to be almost 33 when the season's up. So, I mean, let him go. somewhere where he can really compete. Same thing with Quentin Nelson. Obviously, those two guys are probably going to be wind up playing each other in the NFC championship, you know.
03:04 So we'll see with the Seahawks. I'm not fully bought in there. No one thought that last year either, but I thought it last year. This year, I'm a little not bought in there. But not to interrupt you here, but I will say this with, with Quentin Nelson, that you could have gone either way with that one, unless Nelson said I'm not resigning here, which potentially that could have been an issue there. We don't know the behind the scenes, but unless Quentin Nelson said that, I do think it was kind of, you know, back and forth when it came to potentially bringing him back. I don't think there was really anything that was going to come into bringing Buckner back. One, again, they have a younger player behind him that needs the time. But also with Buckner, his age is just not
03:47 aligning where the Colts are going. And he's been very checked out since that Titans loss as well. So I do think that this was the right move. for the Colts and to move on from him, especially where the Colts are going. So I think you can kind of disagree with the Nelson one if you want, but you absolutely have to make this move from DeForest Buckner. I think this is the right move from ownership, the right move from everybody, and exactly where the Colts need to be going forward. It's unfortunate because he's a very good player,
04:15 but it's the move you need to make if you don't want to be what Chris Ballard has made the Colts the last 10 years. Yeah, and if we're just going off the Compick thing, you know, the Colts couldn't have gotten a really good one for his exit anyways because of his tenure in the league. So getting this fourth round pick. Yeah, that was something I missed. Yeah, that was something I misspoke on last week. I didn't realize that there was an exception for players with 10 plus years in the NFL. I didn't either until today. Yeah, so I didn't learn about that until recently. So I thought with the contract he would demand because I still think he's going to get
04:47 close to $20 million per year, it would have gotten into that third or fourth round range. But because I guess he's 10 plus years in the NFL, the most the Colts could have gotten. was a fifth. So they get ahead of that by getting this fourth round. So I do apologize for misleading you guys on that last week. I had no, I thought I read all the rules on comp picks, but there was a lot more that I guess on the second page of compic. None of us can ever know at all. Right. So I do apologize for misleading you guys with that last week. But yeah, since the floor of actually was a fifth round pick for Buckner, getting a fourth for him, I think is good business. So I think this is perfectly fine getting that for Buckner. Yeah, and this is a guy, mind you, I've been around him for six
05:28 years now in person. I've never seen him so low. And I don't want to say checked out, but like, you almost, you almost, you've never around him before had to feel like you were walking on eggshells. And not that he would ever lash out at like media or anything, but you just, you don't want to even have to put the guy through questions anymore. You know what I mean? And it was absolutely. time you got to free this guy and chris ballard you know multiple times i think has said you know i've had to convince buckner you know trust me believe in what we're doing here ballard's gone buckner's now gone like there's what else is there to believe in you can't convince guys like
06:09 buchner and nelson to sign new contracts during rebuilds you can't bring guys expensive aging guys back like that either yeah and you know again i think it's a different conversation for nelson entirely but for Buckner, like, I guess part of the thing is like, oh, yeah, free him. And I feel like that kind of paints him like a victim in a way where he was part of this. You know, he's been a part of this. You know, he's been to one playoff game with the Colts, and he's been a captain for the entire time he's been here. So if you really want change in this organization, if you really want to turn a corner, you do have to make these tough decisions.
06:44 I think Buckner's a great player. He's going to be a hall of very good player. He's going to potentially be a ring of honor player for either the Colt, or for, you know, or for the 49ers or maybe for both, right? Very, very good player, arguably the best defensive tackle in Indianapolis Colts history. But it just like, what do you want here? Like, you have to make some moves. You have to make some changes or you're going to be in the same situation you were with the Colts since 2020 under Chris Ballard,
07:11 where you keep running this thing back with the exact same captains, the exact same players, and to get the exact same results. So maybe this could be worse for the Colts, but honestly, it wasn't getting anywhere with him. So I do think you'd have to start making these moves, especially with Buckner. Next year, we'll be going into his age 33 season. Players don't just magically get better at 33.
07:31 He's not going to be part of this thing long term. So it's a tough decision. It stinks. But I think with Buckner, you know, this is going to be good for both sides. I think it's good for him to go back to San Fran. He's a West Coast guy as well. Went to Oregon. So we will see some changes here across the board with the Colts.
07:48 But this is something that needed to be done, especially with Tommy outperforming Buckner, not only this past week, but for a good chunk of this season as well. You get an extended look at him, and maybe you can potentially see a place where he can be like that long-term replacement for him, which we're going to talk about here in this next segment. So I guess that's a perfect segue here, Jake. Coming up, we're going to talk all about how it's officially Tommy time in Indy. And I think Sunday's performance against the Minnesota Vikings showed us everything we needed in terms of just it was time to make this change. We're going to talk about it here in just a moment.

We are back talking about this busy day for the Indianapolis Colts so busy that I got off for my day job and I have not showered or eaten anything at all today. So I am exhausted. We'll see if the exhaustion really seeps through in this segment here. But we want to thank you guys for making. making locked on culture first listen, no matter the breaking news, no matter the moment, we are here for you. But if you guys want some World Series coverage, make sure you're checking out locked on rays and locked on Brewers for your second list. And Brewers look like they're
11:02 locking down that series, but we'll see if the race can make an historic comeback going forward. So Jake, again, I'm not as upset about this move as I guess as I would have been about quitting else. And I wasn't particularly upset about quitting Nelson because I understood it. But with Buckner, this one certainly had to happen because, again, you were not going to bring him back after this year under any circumstance with how this season was going. And you really needed this look at Atomio Atabore, because as we saw this past week, he had 28 snaps on defense. And I think that was good. We're seeing that his snaps trend up in him getting more and more snaps. He needs to be the guy the rest of the year.
11:40 Like, they need to see if he is capable of holding down full-time snaps because what we saw on Sunday was one of the, the best defensive tackle performances I've seen in an Indianapolis Colts uniform. He was incredible all game long, run defense and past defense, and he is an ascending player who has gotten better and better every single year. So I kind of viewed, like, again, seeing with Buckner's comments recently paired in with how Tommy performed, Buckner was kind of more of a roadblock to me than anything. And just being able to move off him and his contract, getting that fourth round pick, getting another, what, like $8 million that roll over till next year as well, and getting more
12:19 playing time for Tommy, I think this one's a net positive for the Colts. Because now you can see all the information you need on Tommy before. You can potentially give him an extension at the end of the season. And with the Colts potentially having upwards of $130 million in cap space, you want to have that information before you spend a decent chunk of it on Tommy. So I think this is a net positive for the Colts. And they're going to get 10 weeks here to really evaluate what Tommy can be going forward. Yeah, it's funny.
12:46 Louana Rumo spoke earlier and he mentioned that they're going to get Tommy a lot more involved. Little did we know. That's because DeForest Buckner was getting traded. So yeah, that seems to be fully their intention is I imagine he'll be the starter next to Grover unless Grover gets dealt as well. And then your dream scenario, Tommy and Jerry Tillerie just batten down the hatches. And that's your starting pair right there. Any way you could get Jerry Tiller and more involved, I think, again, like you said, is a net. Tim Smith, get out of here, man.
13:16 Oh, no, I legit do that. Like, now that we see what this is becoming this year, I want all the young guys that we've been wanting to see. Like, wins and losses mean nothing at this point. But no, Tommy's been unbelievable. Obviously, you and I are going to look very smart for our preseason bold takes that he was going to end up with, like, seven or so sacks. He's already over halfway there.
13:38 So very good on us for that one. I saw you also posted a clip earlier today from, like, shattering him out. So this has been a guy we've been waiting to see more of for a while. And we never wanted it to be at the expense of de Force Buckner, but we also didn't expect Buckner to be as heavily involved this year as he was because he miraculously came back from the neck injury.
14:00 But now that he is elsewhere, it's all systems go for Tommy, man. The only thing is, I mean, I've got to imagine they ratchet down his special team snaps. They're not going to sacrifice defense so that he'd gets 25 snaps a game on special teams. So they'll have to do some moving around there, but I've got to imagine Tommy is about to be a guy that plays 50 snaps a game. He should be.
14:24 When we look at what Tommy's done this year, he is tied for second among all defensive tackles in sacks with 4.0. He ranks in the top 20 in pressure percentage and pass rush win rate, according to Sumer Sports. Also in the top 20 in run stuff rate as well among defensive tackles. Now, that's a big one for him. That's a huge one, right? So he is among the top 20 defensive tackles in every metric.
14:46 In terms of sacks, he's in the top two, tied with a ton of guys at number two, including DeForest Buckner and Dexter Lawrence. He's tied with those guys when it comes to sacks at defensive tackle. But then you also just factor in that he's only played 197 snaps on defense this year, where Zach Allen, who's the leading sack getter among defensive tackles this year, has played almost 400 snaps. Or I think it's like 350. It's like in the middle of 300 there.
15:10 So he's played almost double the snaps of Tommy, and he only has half a sack more, and that's leading the NFL among defensive tackles. So what is Tommy going to do with more snaps? Now, again, more snaps doesn't all of a sudden mean more production because there's more of the endurance that plays into it and see how he can really look. But from everything we've seen from Tommy this year, he is a flat, like a lightning rusher, right? A lightning rusher who can get up field in a hurry. He's getting better at throttling down and finishing sacks in the backfield.
15:40 and the Colts again, they just needed this extended look with him really getting that run as a starter to see if he's going to be worth starting next season. Maybe he is just a superstar, like, rotational guy, right? But you owe it to yourselves to really look at it and see. Like, the only time we really saw him as an extended starter was late last season, and it was pretty good. Like, it was pretty good as an extended starter late last season as well.
16:06 But now we get it with him already taking another step forward. So again, I think this is, is a good thing for the Colts when you're going to have so much cap space after the year to bring in a lot of players like the Raiders did before this year like the commanders did before 2025 I believe or 2024 whatever it was. Patriots last year got them to the Super Bowl. Yeah, but Drake May also did. They had a quarterback, yeah.
16:29 Yeah, it did help build that team back again. So yeah, they will have an opportunity to do a lot of that stuff. But just seeing what you have in Tommy, I think is going to be a big part of this. I think he is an ascending player. one of the better pass rushing defensive tackles in the league. Very young as well. This is a guy you want to get that look at as well. So again, I think this is what needed to happen this week.
16:49 It's unfortunate seeing Buckner move because he's been very, very good this year. Well, he's been very good as a pass rusher this season. And I think the 49ers is going to be better about only really having him rush the passer because he really shouldn't be out there on rundowns anymore. But as a pass rusher, he's been excellent this season. And him and Tommy were like the only juice the Colts has. when it came to rushing the passer. So I do think that this is going to be a hurtful loss for winning games this year,
17:17 but I do think this was necessary going forward. And again, if you want to see just what it looked like on Sunday, Buckner was mostly isolated against Joe Huber. Again, the Wisconsin undrafted for aging guard, I believe, is what he was, right? Joe Huber, where Tommy was mostly matched up with Will Fries and even had a couple reps against Christian Darrasol, and Tommy was much more productive. in his matchup than than Buckner was against Huber.
17:42 So I think, again, this might be, I don't want to say addition by subtraction because Buckner's been very good. But again, just getting more of Tommy on the field, I think is going to be a very, very good thing for the Colts, especially when it comes to going into next season as well, seeing what you have in this young player. Yeah, without a doubt. I was actually going to say that brings us to another very good segue, because we do need to discuss what comes next, what might still happen on the trade block for the Colts,
18:12 and what will the fast rush in the defensive line look like? Yeah, we'll see if Jake and I are ever allowed to get some sleep tonight if the Colts make another trade here soon. I'm sure it will happen. But first, a big thank you to our friends over on Amazon for this limited break. The holidays have a way of showing up faster than you would expect. We are back for a final time, and hopefully it's not with new breaking news coming or anything like that. still good on that department? Are we good right now? There's no more breaking news or anything while
19:42 we're recording? Yeah, no, the Colts announced the Buckner trade while you were just talking, but no, we're good otherwise. All right, we'll see. We've had Jordan Schultz and a lot of other insiders allude to some potential other deals that could be in the works today. If you guys want to know why all of a sudden all these trades are coming in on Tuesday, Tuesday is the player's off day throughout the week, not just for the Colts, but for most teams around the league. So guys aren't in the facility, so it does make sense to make a few of your moves when, you know, you don't just have these guys out on practice right before that. You're actually doing it away from the practice field and all that stuff.
20:17 So, yeah, I think that this is a good day to do it. And we're seeing the Colts making the most of this opportunity to do all this as well. But, yeah, I like the Colts making these moves. Do we see more coming today potentially? We've seen a lot more of Josh Downs in the talk as well. and with Josh Downs, it makes sense because I don't think he's going to want to, I don't think he's really going to want to come back to this situation. He's had a lot of different quarterbacks as well,
20:49 and I don't think he's going to want to be here for another rebuild, right? Especially with like how frustrating it's probably been for him today, right? Like, or today, this year, it's been so frustrating with all the quarterback change and just the lack of spacing. So I think he's going to want to go. I don't think he's going to resign. And I think he ends up getting moved today. Now, I have no clue what that price is going to look like.
21:14 Your guess is good as mine because I could see anywhere when it comes to. Probably like a second maybe. See, I don't like you could tell me a third. You could tell me a sixth. Okay. Maybe a third and a fourth or something. Well, his production hasn't been great, right? So his production hasn't been great.
21:31 Like he's not going to warrant what other big time receivers have been traded because those have been like 1,000 yard guys, right? He's never got to 1,000 yards. He's also a limited player. He's a slot receiver, and I think this year has kind of shown that he's a slot guy, not really an outside guy. So what is the price tag on a rental guy who, you know, is more of a slot player? I don't know how other teams would value that,
21:56 because I think he could provide immense value for a passing game, but he's not going to come in and be your number one wide receiver. maybe like what Jacoby Myers got a couple years ago, but Myers was doing it for longer as well. So I don't know, man. It could be a third, as high as a third. I think it could be as low as a fifth or a sixth. I have no clue what Josh Downs could go for.
22:17 I just think that it's in the cold's best interest to probably move him because I don't think he's got to want to come back to this thing. Yeah, without a doubt. I mean, he wanted a bet on himself and do you kind of take the Alec Pierce route, right? you know, your price is a certain level before the season, but then you have a great year and you double it. That hasn't really happened, despite there being no Alec Pierce and Downs being the top receiver. No, no Tyler Warren either. Like, with him having to be moved around a bit, it just has kind of shown a light on the fact that he is not just to do it all receiver.
22:53 He very much, I don't want to say he's niche, but like you can't, you can't do everything with him. So that will kind of cap the, that will cap the price, but also likely cap the amount of suitors because, you know, not everyone is going to want him to be, you know, the zero. They're going to want him to come in and do slot specifically, I'm sure. It's very interesting because I didn't really think he would be moved because he's not being productive right now, well, basically, not just because of him, but how screwed are they going to be without Downs offensively? Well, they're going to be changing a lot of things after this year, James.
23:37 Oh, they absolutely are, but it's going to be almost unwatchable because like, downs is at least occupying the attention of multiple defensive backs right now. Oh, you mean the rest of this season. Yeah, the rest of the season is already unwatchable, on watchable buddy. I mean, look at what they're putting out there on offense. It's got to be brought the rest of the way. I don't think people are properly. evaluating what the run game's going to look like
23:59 the rest of the year without Quentin Nelson. Like Quentin Nelson was the cat. Yeah. I say this with a lot of love for Jonathan Taylor. Quentin Nelson is the most important part of the Colts run game the last couple years. Taylor was very good. Taylor's a very good running back.
24:15 Quentin Nelson's the star in the running game. And we're going to feel it on Sundays. And it's going to make a harder to trade Taylor if you don't trade him this week because you're going to start seeing the running game not be as productive and it'll be hard to sell it running back low you know well keep it like you're in jacksonville this week it can get worse bad things can happen in like five days time so anyone you need to get out of here go ahead and do it and save them now
24:45 yeah no for sure other than downs though so grover stewart's obviously when we've been paying attention to jr i've seen keenan allen's name a handful of times as well whatever someone wants to get whatever somebody wants to give us for if sauce gardener wasn't hurt that one would have made more sense mooney ward but at this point i'm wondering if teams almost would see him as an older like damage goods type of player as much as i hate to say that like it it was questionable whether he was even going to play this year so jonathan obviously jonathan taylor you're kind of running out of the guys that have a really good value like the colts just sold off two of their three highest value guys arguably. Yeah, no, for sure. But I think this makes a lot of sense again for the
25:29 Colts. Like they really need to make these moves and we'll see exactly where they're going from here. But yeah, I mean, I do think a downs trade probably happens later today. I think that they potentially, again, they'll try to call about Mooney. They'll try to call about Grover for sure. I don't think it makes sense to really trade anyone out who is going to be under contract after this year. But a lot of these expiring contracts that aren't going to resign, Like, I think you move those guys. And I think you can tell by watching the film from this past game. Again, I don't want to call out anyone in particular.
26:01 But you can tell from watching this past game who really wants to be here, right? Like, who wants to be here going forward? And there were certain veteran players where the effort wasn't there. And certain players on expiring contracts who the effort really was there. Like, again, like a guy that we're talking about in this video, Tommy, is on an expiring contract and his effort was among the best on the team. There's no reason for it. There's no reason why he should care that much, but he did. And that's the type of player you want to build around going forward where some of these other players were talking about in potential trades,
26:39 the effort wasn't great. And you can tell they're already kind of checked out and they really want to go. So I think those are the guys you prioritize moving. And I think the Colts are right to prioritize moving somebody. I'm not saying Nelson wasn't showing effort, by the way. I think that was just a different discussion. But some of these other guys, I do think that if they won out, I think it's fine. Like they're expiring contracts. They're going to have the choice to go. So I think it's time for the Colts to make this move.
27:06 And I think we'll see, again, a good number of these guys moved and we'll see the door open for some younger players. We had news earlier today, too, Jake, that C.J. Allen would have started if he wasn't hurt going into this past game. So I think get more of these younger players out there, see what you can get. and yeah, we'll see where the Colts go from here. We'll see if the next move is a trade still or maybe after this Sunday's game. We have a new head coach in Indy for the rest of the year.
27:31 I think that's the possibility. I think that's on the table, Jake, especially if they lose by like 30 in Jacksonville. It is, it is. But at the same time, like, what is Carly expecting with what's happening right now? Right. But, I mean, again, like, it could be more of a courtesy thing to Shane. like honestly that probably is what it would be is letting it like when you let a veteran go before for agency starts to let them get a head start like it would be a sign of like we were going to let
28:02 you go anyways right but yeah like they're clearly not going to be winning games this year they may not win another one at this point we'll see there's a couple i don't know man like they did not have a pass rush already and the run game was their strength jake i i implore you to watch miami a little bit and then we'll We'll talk Miami coming off their first win Again I implore you That might be the only one
28:27 But we have a lot of coverage here The rest of the year for the Indianapolis Colts We'll see some young players getting some spotlight And who knows Jake and I might be back here live again We were trying to go shorter on this episode But because it's breaking news We ended up going a full length episode We might have another one
