What Bobbleheads Say About Lakers Culture Going Forward... Plus, Expectations for Walker Kessler!

September 11, 20260 comments♥ 0
00:00bubbleheads and also are the expectations on Walker Kessler Fair, but mostlyBobbleheads. That's next. You are Locked on Lakers.Your daily Los Angeles Lakers podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your teamevery day. Thanks to everybody for stopping by.Locked on Lakers, Brian Keminicki, Andy Kaminzki.
00:31Andy, what am I?Bobblehead.I'm a bobblehead. That's right. We're going to talk a lot about bobbleheads today because the Dodgerification, however long it lasts,we're seeing one element of it that certainly was intended to be part of the Lakers' future promotions that start to look a lot like what the Dodgers are doing. We'll talk about that. We'll talk about some absolutely hideous new uniforms that Nike has issued on behalf of the Lakers and seven other teams.
01:03Plus, reaction to our show about Walker Kessler and some interesting comments and thoughts from listeners and viewers about what the expectations for Walker Kessler ought to be.But we'll start, Andy, the Lakers released their promotional schedule for this year, and it is thick with bobbleheads. Not the Lakers have never done a bobblehead before, but like it's the season of bobbleheads in 2026, 27.Honestly, I'd have to look back to see when is the last time the Lakers have done bobbleheadsbecause I can tell you this, the season that just wrapped, they did not do a single bobblehead.I think they've done it on, I'm pretty sure there's like a Kareembobblehead. They've done it for like. It's rare.
01:50Commemorative kind of things.Like somebody gets a statue or whatever, but like it is not something that happens a lot. It's rare and it has not, at least according to what I found looking up the 25, 27.season giveaways. It included no bobbleheads. This coming season, November 1st,Luca Donchitzsch scoring champion bobblehead, presented by Toyota. November 14th,League of Stars, presented by Bimo honors Norm Nixon with a Nixon bobblehead. Shout outNorm Nixon, very cool guy on the few occasions that I met him.Norm Nixon bobblehead, not a Richard Nixon bobbled. And shout out to Norm
02:29Nixon's son, who did a great job playing him.on the HBO show about the showtime era.The name is escaping me right now.December 27th, Austin Reeves Bobblehead Night.January 14th, League of Stars, presented by BMO honors Paul Westhead, with the Westhead Bobblehead, then March 17th.The League of Stars, they're at it again,
02:52with a Kurt Rambus Bobelhead. That's going to be.It's very important that they commemorate, and plastered a size Kurt Rambus in his playing form, not his executive form.Oh, my God, they went in a suit.Yes.What did they, how about this? What if they didn't do Kurt Rambus player or Kurt Rambus executive,
03:24but couldn't they go with Kurt Rambus interim head coach?Oh, yeah, the 99th season.Right.That would be, that would be a deep cut. It's very nichey.I remember Kobe one time talking about that season because that was also the season. It was a chaotic season. They fired Del Harris and Kurt Rambas took over that team.
03:47That was the last season before Phil Jackson took over. That seat was a lockout season. There was so much chaos going on with that team. But that was also the year that they brought in Dennis Rodman for like 15 games, which was an absolute disaster. If memory serves, he did not fit.finished the season with the team. And Kobe, I remember one time, I don't remember how this came up in some postgame scrum,
04:09but someone brought up his time as a teammate with Dennis Rodman. And Kobe said, he's like, I don't remember any of that. And he said, like, I think I've blocked that out, like like a PTSD type reaction to trauma. And he didn't sound like he was kidding. He didn't sound like he was being facetious. And then finally, April 9th, and this makes sense, Phil Jackson Statue,So Bill Jackson bobbleheads. So one, two, three, four, five, six bobbleheads this coming season last year, zero.
04:44So if nothing else, we've learned that Mark Walter clearly had a bobblehead guy,and hopefully that guy's not getting investigated as well.Well, I mean, look, the Dodgers. They do a lot of bobbled heads.Yes, they do.I mean, a lot of bobbleheads. And, I mean, it's interesting.I'll be honest with you.
05:04Eyes wide, heads high, askson the YouTube, live YouTube chat, who wants a Kurt Rambeusbobblehead? If you werea fan of Showtime, you actually want one of those.Like, Kurt Rambuswas popular. They should have done his bobblehead
05:20like 1993.That would have been a better move.Yeah.But, yeah, I mean, he is ashowtime favorite. But like,I, um,the man got, clothes lined for you people.
05:34Yeah, I know.Was that even called a foul?I remember.It was called a foul.It was not a flagrant.Okay.That's what it was.They didn't even blow the whistle.
05:43No,even then that was a foul.I just,I mean, the way that story gets told now,it's almost this like, and they called the foul on Kurt.Yeah,
05:51no.It has been memory hold now to where it was likethe game was being officiated in prison. And nothing was being called at all. They called a foul. So, but like I look at this and there, I have, I have actually have a bunch of thoughts about this, because like I, I am very interested in beyond all the, the sort of basketball stuff, you know, who's going to be the assistant, the GM and are they going to hire scouts and what's going to
06:23happen with this, you know, power forwards, but like the stuff that we talk about all the time. There are elements of like, what's going to happen.to the culture of the Lakers going forward that I think are worth exploring. And, you know, this is kind of a, a silly avenue into it, but it's sort of related.Like, what I don't remember the Lakers being big on giveaways, period. You know, there's the occasional T-shirt draped over a seat and, you know, stuff like, but it's not like every, there's a theme and a promotion and a giveaway and stuff like that every night. And, you know, I see stuff like this as an increase in fan service or a change in how fan service is going to be delivered.
07:12I also see it, Andy, for a team that is notoriously difficult to get any kind of honorarium from, like you can't get your jersey retired unless you're in the Hall of Fame.So guys like Derek Fisher, who would absolutely have their jersey retired by,like every other team in the league can't get his jersey retired by the Lakers. So, you know, you know, so he can't get a Jersey retirement, can't get a statue.Derek Fisher could get a bobblehead.Like I do wonder if this is going to become like a way that the Lakers try to acknowledge players from the past in like the only way they can.I mean, possibly.
07:55It depends honestly on how much of this really is a Mark Walton.and specifically, I mean, you could even maybe say a Lon Rosen thing.Because like the Lakers have had plenty of opportunities to land on the idea of this is how we celebrate like the ring of honor type guys.Because the Laker standard is you have to be a Hall of Famer to have your jersey retired. And they've retired so many jerseys that a ring of honor almost feels anticlimactic, even though, again, it would be a hell of an honor for people like fish and Ori and Byron.and Scott and, you know, like guys who really mattered for this organization, but just they're notHall of Famers, but they would, you know, Lamar Odom, they would be like instant no-brainer ringof honor types. Coming up with a bobblehead ain't that creative or difficult. I just wonder if this,
08:50again, this feels very much like a Mark Walter Lon Rosen type of fact. And it, but the reasonI bring that up is how much staying power this has.has really is going to be a reflection of how much do Bob Eiger and Josh Kushner valuebobbleheads as a giveaway or commemoration. But it's it's not just that and we can carry a little bit of this over and we'll getinto the Kessler stuff and and a few other things before we're done, including by the way,the feds now looking into the clippers. That escalated quickly.
09:23And yeah, but one of the things that I think Jeannie does really well,is, and obviously she's got tremendous context, is understand and respect franchise history. And more importantly, really understand and respect how fans view Lakers history and Lakers'greats and all of this kind of stuff.Like, she really gets it in that regard. And look, I keep talking.about this stuff as if Jeannie's time with the team is short because I think even if she winsthis suit, she's not long for leadership in the franchise. I just don't see it being a winning
10:15proposition for her. Similar to Steve Balmer and the battle that he seems to want to engage in,she ought to stand down. I think so. I think for her own reputation, I think she ought to.But next, I kind of want to get into how this stuff goes forward.Like, you know, I'll give you an example of what I think would be a monumentally popular guy to honor in the way that Paul Westhead and Norm Nixon are being honored. And we'll get into it next. The problem of finding clothes that you can live in all day, be comfortable and do whatever you need to do.Whether it's just chilling, going to meetings, playing golf, being on the move. That problem has been solved by Cozy Earth.
11:07The everyday polo is the answer. It's lightweight, built to move with you, just easy to wherever.I've got it on right now, and it's fabulous.Plus, the Cozy Earth Essential Sox, they're exactly what the name suggests.Soft, supportive, comfortable enough that you stop thinking about them halfway through the day.Plus, Cozy Earth backs everything with a 10-year warranty and hassle-free returns. So if something isn't quite right, you're covered. That makes trying them for yourself an easy decision.

12:09Like, Norm Nixon is, you know, he would be sort of ring of honor.Oh, yeah.Well, guy.Absolutely.I mean, Paul Westhead, people forget the influence he have. But they're not the, these aren't the first people think of when, you know, when you get into Lakers' grades, but they're really important guys. And like, it's cool.
12:27Winning time. That's the name of the HBO show, winning time.I was trying to remember earlier.I thought you were trying to think of the person. No, no, no, no.No, winning time HBO based off the book by Jeff Perlman, who's been a friend of the show beforecontinue.I fell behind on that.
12:42I never caught up.Season two was really good.I actually thought season two was better than season one.Okay.I was disappointed that it got canceled.Yeah, I know a lot of people were. But like, you know, so like Westhead and, you know, Nixon, Kurt Rambas obviously falls intothis category, jokes aside.
13:01like it's these are like true fan service type things to give away like your older fans guyshave been around or whatever like how incredibly popular Andy would an Eddie Jones bobblehead bemassively I mean like massively you could if you could expand crypto.com arena to like 40,000 seatsinstead of 20,000, you know, 35,000, something like that and give people and like give awaythat many bobbleheads.I guarantee you you could get 30,000 people to show up who would want an Eddie Jonesbobblehead. And the point I make of this is, it's like one of the, I am not, I'm not trying to advocate
13:50for Jeannie to stick around, but one of the things that I do worry about with all of thesepeople leaving the building is not so much.you know, the basketball acumen that the Lakers might be losing. But there is a little bit of sort of historical institutional knowledge that goes. And like you want somebody who works for the organization who will suggest I see J.P. Cantrell1, like an AC green.Like, you know, you want somebody in the building who can suggest, hey, guys, what about Eddie Jones?Hey, you know, what about, you know, this player here was a couple good season or like this play, this moment, this whatever it is.
14:38And it's not because those like the new guys, Kushner, Iger, whatever, are against honoring moments like that or players like that. They just may not think of them because they don't have the background.Well, I would say this.If we're talking about one of the most well documented franchises in the history.of sports. So, I mean, I know I've read at least five books on the Lakers, probably more. You know, I have actually thought about like an angle that I could write a book on the Lakers.Like the point being, this is an extremely well documented. There's plenty of history that is veryreadily. Well, and the reason I'm saying this is assuming they are aware of
15:29of the organization that they are purchasing because one of the things that I think evencasuals know about the Lakers is it's a franchise that really revels in its history.I mean, occasionally, quite frankly, it errs on the side of too much deference to thehistory and obsessing too much over it to the point where I think at times it's becomeprisoner to its own history, but nonetheless, this is an organization that,If you are aware and care about that sort of stuff, it ain't going to be hard to do.It just won't.It's not that it's hard to do, but a lot of things that aren't actually that hard to do
16:11in terms of like acknowledging the history might be hard to do well.Like, you know, to just get some of the nuances in history, like get like the thing thatmight not on the surface seem like it would be that popular, but it really would be.But like, but even beyond that, it's not that it's not.necessarily hard to do. It's that it's that you have to remember to do it. And a lot of things thataren't necessarily that hard to do or seem obvious in running a business or whatever don'thappen just because it's not made a priority because of the, and I don't know, I, like I said,I think I said this earlier in the week. Like the first thing that the Cushner group should do,
16:53assuming it hasn't been done already when they take over the franchise is announced a statutefor Dr. Boss, or get a power forward. But in one of those, those should be the first two things that they do.And I mean, I think that would be a really smart and a good way to kind of, you know,to approach this transition.I just, my point is I hope that new ownership either, you know, there's still some people around or they just take the time to,make sure that this is something that is cultivated and curated and done in as close to the same
17:38way as it has been over the course of time because it's one thing the Lakers have beenconsistently good at that really serves fans well and pays off dedicated long-termfanship. Yeah. I mean, like I said, if this is something they're interested in doing,And hopefully, again, if you are purchasing this organization, you bother to learn about the thing that you're paying $12.5 billion for, this is not a difficult thing to land on as something that fans would enjoy, as something that would ingratiate yourself to this new base.Do you want to do it or not?I mean, that's really what it comes down to.If they want to do it, it will not be very difficult to do it.It won't be very difficult to find people that can speak to the history.
18:28Hell, call me.I mean, like, really, I can come up with a lot of this stuff. And there's, you know, hundreds of other people that you could go to.That's such a fun gig.Oh, my God.I mean, I'm being serious.Call me.I'll do this.
18:43Like, really, and I actually think I'd be pretty good at it.But nonetheless, like, just this won't be a difficult project, assuming it's a project they want to undertake. And I agree with you, it's one they should.Let's turn our attention a little bit to some, I thought the reaction to the Kessler podcast that we did earlier this week, talked about expectations where we, you know, we brought up some comments Robert Ory made to you guys at the Lakers Golf Tournament last week when you were working on 710 ESPN.He's very bullish on Kessler.I am very bullish on Kessler.Going through the comments on the YouTube page, Andy, I thought, was really interesting. There was a big gap,
19:26like, not gap, but likea wide variance between people who were like, yes, this guy's really going toperform and other people who were like, you know, everybody's expectingway too much. The guy has never put up numbersand you do this and that and whatever.I went back, one person, I think, made a mistake
19:42and, you know, pointed out like his careernumbers and the under 10rebounds, under 10 points and all thisstuff. It's like, okay, butthat includes like his rookie season.I think if you look at Kessler'sSecond season, you know, his, I'm sorry, last, if you look at his last full season, I should say, in Utah, the one before last year when he was hurt, started 58 games. That's the best one to look at because he's going to be a starter here.
20:10It was like basically 12 points or 11 points, 12 rebounds and a couple blocks a game with enormous defensive metrics.I know I said it's certainly possible.I think he could push between 15 and 20 at night in terms of points.I think the rebounds are still in that, you know, 12 a game and, you know, a couple blocksa game and whatever. The reaction from some people, like the idea that Kessler could get an extra five or sixpoints a game as a more featured player being fed by Luca Donchich, it doesn't seem at all crazyto me.
20:48I guess all I'm talking about are really just raising expectations of the amount ofpoints he scores on a given night.I mean, we can talk about that coming up next.Like there are, I think, good signs of what Kessler can do.I think really just comes down to what is realistic. So we can talk about that coming up next.Locked on Lakers is brought to you by Odu.Running a business shouldn't feel like you're trying to connect a bunch of systems that were
21:16never designed to work together. One app for accounting, another for inventory, another for sales.and somehow none of them talk to each other. And that's where Odu comes in.Odo is an all-in-one business management softwarethat brings every part of your business togetherin one powerful platform, from sales and accounting to inventory and marketing.
21:32Everything works in one place.Odu is one platform to manage, grow, and scale your business. The best organizations know that success is not just about talent,by having everyone working towards the same goal. And that's true in sports, just like it is in business.Like this off-season began with a radical, changed roster by multiple accounts and reports, a lot of conjunction and teamwork between Synergy,Raupilinka and Luca Donchich. And now we're going to be eventually transforming to this new
22:05ownership group. The Lakers just hired a second assistant general manager to go along withRohan Rommodas, the former rocket scientist. And all of these people need to get on the samepage working together. And that's really going to be the key to getting the true LucidantDantich era off to the strongest start possible. Great organizations win because operationsmatter. And that's why you should get Odu. Odu is one platform to manage, grow, and scale yourbusiness. Try for free today at Odu.com slash locked on. That's ODO.O.com slash locked on.A couple other suggestions, Andy, people make, are making in the chat in terms of bobbleheads,a Diane Cannon bobblehead, a flea bobblehead,
22:56Lawrence Tanter microphone pin. They'll do something to honor L.T.There's no question about that.As well, they should.I mean, beyond the career, one hell of a nice guy.Oh, wonderful, wonderful guy.I just, you know, when I think of my expectations of Kessler, offensively, I don't think they're that crazy at all.
23:19And then I think that, you know,Obviously, the big thing is defensively, all I'm thinking is if he has the same relative impact as he did in Utah on this team, you know, his defensive statistics and metrics jump off the page in the same way here as they did there, you know, the results will be better and the impact will be more important because he's doing it on a team that's actually trying to win games. So that for me is my biggest expectation that he have the same impact.I'm not expecting anything to be better just the same. But I'm curious, though, I'm curious though what your expectation is.Like, you know, do you expect him to be, do you think it's fair to expect him to be significantly better on that side than he was in Utah, things like that?
24:09I think he needs to be better overall, period.Like, I don't know if you're going to limit it to the offensive side or the defensive side or both, whatever.I'm just saying for $30 million per season and four-year commitment and the picks that they gave up,he has to, I realize with Utah there was a lot of intentional tanking and, you know, the injury that he had that, you know,he only played five games last year and then had that surgery. It was real surgery and something that had been lingering for quite literally his entire professional career.but if the jazz had been incentivized to actually win games,he could have, I think, been back earlier.
24:50And Colin Sexton talked to me during the Lakers Youth Foundation Golf Tournamentabout, you know, he and Walker are really close because they played together in Utahfor a few years, that Kessler spent time during his injury, you know,or injury recovery, working a lot on his game in ways that suggested that he could havepotentially gotten back on the court if there was.an incentive or desire to have him there. But, you know, I've talked about before, even as somebody who likes this signing
25:21and understands why people see the potential effectthat he can have, he's never done it on a team with stakes. And in order to play at the level that matches those stakes,he's going to have to be better.I think on both sides of the ball than he was. What you mean is to reach the same level of impact,to reach to, you know, sort of replicate, it's going to be harder for him to do that. It's going to be, you know, because of stakes because of pressures and things like that.
25:52Yeah, absolutely.I mean, get to the same place. That makes sense, for sure.Yeah.I mean, I think even defensively, there's going to have to be ways where he becomes an even betterversion of himself, if nothing else.Like, looking over some, like, you know, I broke down some of his stats during the last fullseason that he played in Utah versus Wembe's last season when he won defensive player of the
26:15year. And as I noted, a lot of Kessler's stats were comparable to Wembe's. But one area whereWembe was, you know, a few rebounds better was defensive rebound. And that's an area where I thinkWalker Kessler can improve. He's not bad, but he could be better. And then offensively, I thinkthere's going to be, I think he's going to find more opportunities because he's playingwith, forget just Luca, like Austin is probably a better playmaker than he's ever had in Utah.Like, he's going to be set up better with better playmakers than he had in Utah, which shouldoffer him more opportunities beyond just the offensive rebounds where that dude is a beast andthe second chance points where he's really effective. But yeah, he's got to be better.
27:06Let me, let me, I think you're right. And I think the, you know, when you do it with stakes, doing something where there is pressure, where there is scrutiny, all this, it makes it harder.I don't think there's any question. But the distinction I'm sort of trying to make here is Kessler has never done it on a team that mattered defensively, I'm talking about, like in terms of just looking at those numbers, which have been basically elite since he came into the league.Even as a rookie in Minnesota, like, you know, he didn't play.play a ton. But when he did, it was like, damn, you know, those defensive metrics are reallyeye-popping. It's why Utah wanted him, you know, when they- Well, it's also why, as Tony Jonesexplained to me when I had him on for a scouting report on Kessler, during his rookie year,
27:52they stopped playing him because that was one of the seasons where they were trying to lose. And he was a little too helpful. Exactly. Like, and that's happened a couple times. I agree withyou. He could have played last year. And I think he absolutely would have played last year,Utah was actually trying to win games. So this is a skill that he has established that he has. You're not wishcasting Walker Kessler, potentially elite defensive player because he'salready shown that that's kind of the category he can be in.I compare that to Jonathan Kaminga, where people talked about Kaminga as because
28:32he's athletic as, you know, bleep. And, you know, it has the physical tools, but has never actually translated that into consistent production as a defensive player. There was much more wishcasting as like the idea of what, can be the perfect person to plug in because he can defend at all these positions or whatever. It's like, we haven't seen it.It's possible, but we haven't seen it.Not on a regular basis.
28:59Not on a regular basis. We've seen flashes of it.And so that's kind of the distinction that I'm making here.Like when I say, I don't feel like.the expectations for Kessler, particularly on that end, are really out of line.Beyond, I think, the very important distinction that you're making, Andy, that you're making,do it when it matters, do it when people are watching and paying attention.I mean, I think basically from a purely a number standpoint, the only stuff that really
29:31needs to go up. You know, you can make a little argument that there's enough room in therefor another rebound or two. And the scoring average, 11 points a game is not going to cut it.Like, it needs to be higher than that. But it's not, doesn't even be 26. And I just find it veryeasy to picture him getting three easy buckets a game on average. It wasn't getting beforebecause Luca makes, has made far less talented centerslook better than they areand help boost their statistical production.
30:11And so, you know,I don't feel like people are putting, with the expectation that Walker Kesslercould be very good with the Lakers. And if the Lakers win some games,Kessler could be in that DPOY conversation, all that.To me, that doesn't feel
30:26overstated for Kessler based on what he's already shown in the league, although I know people disagree.Well, I mean, look, I'll say this much.If it is overstated, the Lakers are in trouble.I mean, like, they...That's another good point.Yeah, I mean, they invested in Walker Kessler.I'm not saying that he has to start becoming Wembe's primary competition for defensive
30:53player of the year or beat him out every other year.and it becomes a traveling trophybetween the two of them passed back and forth.I mean, that may not be realistic.Wemby has got that trophy on lockdown for a while.Right.I mean, he is so effing goodthat assuming he plays enough games,
31:10the biggest obstacle for Wembe is just going to beaward voter boredomand just wanting to shake things up.But he needs to have a very significant impact.Like, he just has to.Otherwise, the Lakers pegged the wrong guy.And I just, because the, the, which guy was such a big conversation.Who do you go after?
31:35Who do you?And I know there were people who thought they overpaid for Kessler. But like, if you, if you had to pick, which guy has been more proven at the NBA level?Which guy has a better track or more established track record at something, at like an NBAskill between him and say, Peyton Watson? There's another name.I think Kessler's got a far more established track record as a top-end defender than anythingWatson has done.
32:04Despite that Watson's potential, I think he's a great player that's going to fit in reallywell with Cleveland.Kessler's a more established player in terms of demonstrating a skill set.I think we've seen, it's been more fully realized, if nothing else.Watson, you could argue, you know, has done it more in the playoffs in the sense thathe's been in the playoffs. He's been in them.Right.
32:23Which, you know, Jalen Duren is, I think, has shown a little more offensive pop thanJalen Duren is a more established NBA player than Walker Kessler purely. He's made an all-star team. He's made an all-N-A team.Right.That's what I meant is all-N-B-A.It's like, you know, so like that's a guy who's established himself in the league. He has not established himself defensively in the same way that Kessler has.
32:50But, you know, all NBA is pretty good.So I just, I think there's less wish casting here with Kessler than there is with other players. It's, it feels less speculative than they, then it was, which is why I think they paid the price that they paid. And I, I could in five months have tremendous amounts of egg on my face, um, about this. But I just, I'm, I'm pretty comfortable because I think there's enough.of a track record of doing the thing that he's going to be asked to do for the Lakers.I don't think he's going to turn him into a top five defense.I don't think anybody can do that, but not with the rest of the personnel.
33:36But I think his impact relative to everyone else on the team is going to look like what itdid in Utah.Yeah, I think the defensive impact that people are envisioning, we've definitely seenwhat he can do.Again, he's just never done it on a team that matters.and like that level, not just of pressure, but also everything has to be more precisewhen you're doing it for a team that is trying to win games
34:02and on top of it,he's going to have more offensive responsibilityand more offensive onus.Because again, everything matters more.Everything matters. And he'll have more help to do it well. But the pressure, look, I mean, there'll be plenty of,the vultures will be out.
34:20You know, and there'll be plenty of people looking for fail.if for another reason they want to get robbed fired. So, you know, I don't want to see Eric Ansler trash talking. That would be terrible. But, like, you know, there's just going to be a lot of people who are ready for the big change. They understand that if, you know, the Lakers win 54 games in a playoff series and take the spurs to six in the second round,Rob's not probably going anywherebut probably doesn't deserve to be fired at that point.
34:55There's no downside to winning games going further in the playoffs.Done.Yeah, don't overthink this.Yeah.Lockdown Lakers on YouTube is where you can hang out with over 39,000 subscribersto the channel.Do make sure you are subscribing to the audio version as well, whether that's through Spotify, Apple, however, get your podcasts.
35:14Hope everyone has a great weekend.a happy new year to those celebrating Russia Shana. We'll see everyone on Monday.
