00:43Daniels!A call there by Guy Haberman and Tim Ryanon KSAN.That was the 49ers radio, breathing a huge sigh of reliefas the undefeated San Francisco 49ershold on to be the Washingtoncommanders 23-10.
01:25to 17, which looked like a game that we weren't going to have a lot to talk about in terms oftension. We were just going to talk about how the 49ers are the best team on the planet right now.And through 40 minutes of this game, that's what it was Jordan Rodriguez. And yet the commanders somehow got the ball back two different times and in position to potentiallywin this game. There's a lot to talk about now.but how about the way that the commanders finish this game and the way that the 49ers defense in the end did hold up two different times?Yeah, pretty incredible watching. You know, we were gushing about this defensive line sort of off broadcast earlier, Greg.
02:07Just the way that they were getting off the line of scrimmage, you know, of the pressure they got tonight, seven quick pressures. You know, Ruello Haight is at the end in the mix with Obo Occo, you know, combining to split the sack.he's got a club on his hand. He's showing the club off too.And it just, there's so much juice with this young defense. And they really stepped in and showed that they're beyond their yearscollectively as a group to finish the game the way that they did in such a high leverage, high pressure situation.
02:39Yeah.And there was a couple of moments late.Like I mentioned, you felt like maybe the game winning play was going to be on the drive previous to that.the commanders get the ball back. They drive it deep. They have a touchdown turned back by penalty. And it was a good call.
02:58It was a face mask, but it looked like the commanders had briefly taken the lead.Instead,a penalty knocked them back all the way to the 46-yard line. Then a that drive looked over, but a penalty by the 49ers kept it alive. And we got to a fourth-down situationwhere Traylon Burks and eventually goes up for the ball.
03:16And Malik Mustafa, who has been a sneaky, important player this entire season makes the play of the night for the 49ers.I think we got that.Inside receiver three to the right.Shotgun snap to Daniels. He drops back.He steps up.
03:31He throws far to the end zone. And it.What a play by mouth.Justifying slash using the laws of physics and gravity and mass and force andacceleration and everything to knock that ball loose.Every universal tool at his disposal.tried to put to use in that moment. It was an incredible attempt by Trelon Burks. It would have been anamazing contested catch. It was an even better play by Malik Mustafa and again, Gravity and the
04:14ground helping him out a little bit too because that was so hard to hang on to. The third and threeright before that was also a play that was stuffed by Malik Mustafa. And so that's what I'm saying. We have said over and over again, Greg, that these days.dudes are reading and reacting so fast and they are flying to the ball with force and rage and joy.And like, it is fun to watch. Almost got away from them for a minute there. But it was so fun towatch that group play. Yeah, through, like I said, the first 40 minutes or so of this game beforethe commander's drive in the middle of the third quarter that they ended up scoring on. It was 51place to 21. It was great complimentary football by the 49ers offense.
05:00holding on to the ball. But late in the game, and it was quick. The commanders started to come up withanswers. And that's one thing. I see someone in the comments. You know, everyone joining us live onYouTube, we appreciate you. Hello. I'm saying no more moral victories for this team. And it was tough. They're playing without Terry McLaurin at the end of the game. But they also have all thesemental mistakes. And I have seen with this young coaching staff, it's like parts of games, you see it.It's like they had no answer for the blitz for the Giants for too long last week. And then they kind of figured it out in overtime. And similarly, that happened tonight where they made some plays late.
05:40And I think similarly, their defense figured out some things late. But you have to give Rahim Morris some credit because, man, no Nick Posa and Mustafa, you know, week after week, he is in the mix.And you know, I'm an all pro voter this year. It's just like, I'm making these lists of just like watch lists.Like he's been a guy who is popping week after week in addition to his buddy, Fred Warner. But what about what do you think about when you watch other than just like the physicality?Or maybe that's it.
06:10This 49ers defense in what Rahim Morris has been able to do this season and really hold them down for the first big portion of this game. They're faster than I think teams anticipate.Like their play speed is faster than I think they even sometimes look when you're watching like condensed film after game. They look fast. But their defensive backfield is.playing really, really well. They're getting more than what these guys look like on paper. And schematically, it's interesting. And I, you know, I covered the Rams when Rahim Morris wasthe DC there. And one of the biggest things that Rams fans would just go crazy over and sometimes
06:46rightfully so was when they couldn't see their corners on the screen because they were playingin such a deep shell. And it was the style of play that the Rams were wanting to play to limit thoseexplosives, they sort of are playing a little bit more freely, in a sense, with Rahim Morris inSan Francisco, because they, they don't give a F about the explosives, it seems like, because they'replaying tighter. That's my point is they obviously care still about that. But like they're playingtighter. They're playing a tighter match down to the ball, which again, it only happens with a lot ofreally important communication. The reedition to Fred Warner in the middle of this defense, gettingall of that communication aligned, that to me is such a game changer in the 49ers being able to play
07:32this aggressive style of defense that they want. You know, like he is able to set up their entireoperation in such a way where they're not thinking. They're just reacting and playing and it shows. You think about like some defenses are front to back. Some are back to front and they're likemiddle, Fred Warner and then to back and then maybe a little bit of front. And it starts there. And we have a great comment from our friend Will Gavin at Talksport, who's a 49ers fanand must have gotten up early or stayed up late in the UK for this one.But he's saying pay Rahim Morris like a head coach and make him Mike Shanahan's Steve Spagnolo.
08:12And Rahim Morris had a great clip last week that went viral about enjoying the job that he had, being asked about whether he wanted to be a head coach ever again.answer it directly, but he essentially said, sometimes you got to appreciate what you do have, because we are very lucky to have these jobs that we do have. And I bet he is having a lot of fun tonight. Will, by the way, doing 49ers radio.I should have known they got a deal over there in the UK.
08:43So he's coming down after the game as a big time fan.And look, they almost flew this one.And this is not a game where I'm going to point too many fingers, because it all happened fast and I think the commanders are better than the record indicatesand I'm glad even though they did blow some things poise wise late which reminded you a little bitof last week for them to be in the similar situation end of game we'll get into that but II did want to mention the 49ers kind of let the commanders back in this game in a way becauseof the two three and outs now it wasn't a game with a lot of possessions but in those
09:22those two, three and outs in the fourth quarterin which the commander startedmaking their comebacks. Can you guess how many design runsthat Christian McCaffrey hadin those two series? Why don't you just tell me, you know?I'm trying to set you up. You're going to get better at these quizzes
09:40because zero.Zero Christian McCaffrey runs. And I know Brock Purdy was playing incredible, but he takes a sack on one of them. There's a negative play on another and suddenlythey get into these third long situations.and Durante Jones starts cooking him up.And at that point in the game, Jordan, Christian McCaffrey and Kaelin Black had a 75% design
10:02success rate. They were killing the commanders. So I know it's just a couple plays, small sample size.Brock Purdy was cooking too.But going away from McCaffrey there did feel like a bit of a mistake. And I do want to give Durante Jones some credit for being able to mix things up and geta little more creative in the second half than he was in the first. It was interesting.
10:22he adjusted really well, in my opinion, because Kyle Shanahan came out with a game planwhere they were going to try to take the teeth out of that blitzby going no huddle a lotand sprinkling that in where they couldto make sure that the 49ers,or excuse me, that the commander's blitz packagesmaybe couldn't manifest as fully as he would have liked.
10:44And it wasn't working. They were carving them up.Brock Purdy in the first half, the 49ers in the first half,17 first downs and over 300 yards of offense.Rock Purdy was 17 for 22 for 214 yards in a touchdown in that first half and played incredible. But then, you know, Mike Evans goes out, right? And that changes their plan in a big way.
11:06And you can't always do the non-communicative stuff when one of your best players leaves the game. And so now you're starting to say, okay, got to adjust, got to figure things out,see what voids and what areas we can attack in the passing games still are.And they start to struggle. And the three and outs,it was to watch them move the ball the way that they did.And then on the reverse to struggle like that,it could have truly tilted it if the commanders were able to fully capitalize.
11:34They did, you know, they did once. But if they were able to fully capitalize, the 49ers would have maybe been down to the actual wire on this one in the end.Because in that second half,Brock Purdy is just, you know, not a lot of plays, obviously.four for seven for 50 yards. And so that to me.Three straight, three and outs.
11:52Yeah.It ended up that way.And they did have one long drive where I think they got what they wanted where they took a lot ofclock off. They end up settling for a field goal.Kyle Shanahan, who I've noticed, has definitely like most of the coaches,
12:05gotten fourth down religion in a way that I appreciate.Against Troy Aikman's protests.Right.He found fourth down religion.Praise be.Right.Troy Aikman, who never follows up after the points where he said,oh, yeah, analytics says to go for it.
12:23You know, analytics, that's one way to get you fired.Cut to easy, fourth, and three, scramble by Brock Purdy.Later in the game, I think it was just a straight-up push-bush-bush-type sneak by Brock Purdy, which our friend, Bram Weinstein, who I was listening to on the radio, because I had to drive into work last minute, because my internet crashed at my house.at the worst time.Like we're going to Paris tomorrow.I know.
12:48Yeah, I was going through it.But I was listening on the radio and he called it the gold rush, the Brock Purdy sneak. And I don't want to look past how good they were in the first halfs. At points, this offense just looks completely unstoppable. You mentioned Mike Evans. He had three catches for 96 yards. He just got open so easily, 94 yards rather.and he's playing through multiple injuries.
13:18He gets up gingerly after he gets up each time. And you just think, how is this guy playing week after week because of the ribs? But then Troy Aikman says it's really the Achilles that's bothering him.And you saw that is what he went out of the game with.He was trying to stretch it.They showed him afterwards. And it's incredible how effective Evans and this entire passing attack has been despite these injuries. And you hope, unlike Terry McLaurin, that this, you know, I hope both of them are not serious
13:48based on how the Terry McLaurin injury looked Jordan.I'm not a doctor. They put him in a little cast there. It did not look good.It looked like, unfortunately, a really serious injury.Hopefully for Mike Evans, because they really need him.As much as good as they are without him, they really need him.Hopefully this is something he can get back or maybe arrest him for a week or two.
14:08And then he's fine after that because he's,awesome in this offense and they're six to know and they could live without him for a week or two. It's more about trying to win a Super Bowl this year. Yeah. And forgive me, I was looking to see ifKyle Shanahan had addressed it yet and hasn't so far. So we'll stay tuned on on that. I'm sure he'llbe asked about that immediately post game. But yeah, it was interesting. I could tell something wasweird with Mike Evans early, not because he was playing any different. He looked amazing on some of thosecatches. But on that 54-yard or catch-and-run, which was a great ball, great catch. And then he ran afterthe catch and then was eventually pushed out in the first quarter, I believe, no, yeah, in the first
14:46half. Second quarter, yeah. Second quarter. And, and he sat for a moment on the sideline and right before thecamera cut away, you could see him sitting and he grabbed both of his toes and he sort of stretchedthem back and he flexed them back for both of his feet. And I was like, ooh, so either he's feelingsomething in his hamstring or his Achilles and I hope it's neither. But it was a little bit of a tellright then and there that maybe he was he was going to start feeling it a little sooner rather than later.I am going to award the player of the week in just a few minutes, but this is what's called theprofessional tease here, Jordan.Suspense.
15:21We do have to talk about the plot line of the commander season and how last season, last week ended with gamemanagement and how going into this week, ooh, Monday night football. And they're in prime time a couple times coming up.They have the Eagles also in prime.in a couple weeks. And you just thought, I don't think it makes any sense to fire Dan Quinn in the season.I think everyone knew this season is an audition.I think he has shown, including in Atlanta during one of their good seasons when they were
15:53really scuffling for a while and then went on a late streak, I think they have a betterchance of rebounding with him and seeing this thing through. But as it was 23 to 3, you know, you did start, I at least started to wonder of man,And this thing is like really starting to snowball. So I'm glad it turned around in a way.And yet I'm going to point out three different spots where it just wasn't on point.Number one, there was a fourth down sequence early in the game where there's an illegal motion. And they had a lot of penalties tonight.
16:23It's just a sloppy operation before, after the snap, but especially before. And Jaden Daniels is on fourth down. And he throws the ball like 15 yards out of bounds. And it wouldn't have mattered anyways because there was a penalty.on him but it's like oh man that that's on jaden that's on everyone but that can't happen i was listeningto the broadcast as i as i was telling you about the commanders and they were noting how so manytimes the players did not know the plays and that's something where they were really like keen in onthat chigo concoe was improvising trying to figure out what was happening diami brown at one point
16:58didn't really know what the play call was and is just running around and they're actually making itwork. Some of this is during the comeback, but there's confusion. And then the play is coming outlate and they have to burn a time out late in the game. And that was really costly. Look, that happens to good coaches too sometimes, but they just didn't get the play call in timefor their fourth down. So they had to burn a time out. And that really cost them the amount of timethat they could have had on their subsequent drive. When their defense, who was playing greatat that point, got another three and out. So it's just different parts of the team kind ofletting different parts of the team down.
17:36What was your take from all that and kind of the operation and how it looks here for Dan Quinn?Yeah, some of it for me would have been frustrating to watch if I were a commander's fanbecause some of those things happened after like big gains or in crucial moments where, again, high leverage situations.Like the first one that you pointed out, that really promising drive early in the game, you know, that big Chigoconquo gain, all the sudden the goal area, the fourth down, the throwaway, just sort of, you know, it's a womp, like to the end of like what was a really promising sequence, truly.
18:15There were plays where they're in the middle of these really intense and necessary situationswhere everybody has to stay calm and be composed. And, you know, the running back who's in because, you know, Bill Kroski Merritt's not in.And he, you know, he runs right into Jaden Daniels when he's.trying to figure out what side he's going to be on.And so it's these little things, the end, you know, throwing the ball, the intentional grounding, which caused the 10 second runoff and those types of things. They just can't, they just can't happen at the end of the game.
18:49And they can't happen at the beginning of the game in high leverage moments because it tookthe commanders a minute to try to, you know, regather themselves after that. And the 49ers were just a wagon on offense for the first half.So you can't afford to make mistakes like that. And the frustrating thing, and I'm not usually someone who pulls commanders, but I've enjoyed watching them this season, and they've been a frustration.I've almost felt like a fan because I think what you saw tonight was really typical of their season, that there were like 20 minutes per game where it really looked great.
19:24And Jaden Daniels is not a seasoned quarterback right now,and there were a couple inaccurate passes.but man, he also made a lot of great plays and led them on this comeback. And in the end, they get to 61 plays. And he ends up with 300 yards and a couple touchdowns.Like he has looked better this season without a doubt than he did last season in my mind.I just think he's looked closer to where he was as a rookie. And like you can see like it's not that far away from clicking in.
19:54And the defense, like I said, has had moments and some of the pickups that they had, especially on defense.Unfortunately, Javon Kinlaugh goes out tonight.have had moments. Oconco is back.Like Rashad White at a touchdown tonight,I think he's been okay in his spot. And it's like the commanders are going against Philly and the Giants coming up.And we have, you know, a viewer noting asking saying,
20:15is he crazy to think that it's not over? No, in this division, it's not over.Because I don't think the Giants are a good team.I don't think the Cowboys are really playing like a good team. And the Eagles are a total mess. And so if you're talking about not over in the sense of getting one of those old school commandersor, you know, eight and nine, but we win the NFC East that way,
20:34kind of like the Panthers won the NFC South.Like, I think that's on the table.I think that's possible.I am not giving up on this team.Hell, let's listen. Why not?Let's listen to part of the comebackbecause it was a nice moment.
20:46Before we transitioned to Christian McCaffreyand what we saw good out of the Brock Purdy experience today, let's hear that Rashad White touchdownbecause I love to hear a little Bram Weinstein.Actually, we'll be watching it,if you're on YouTube, the Rashad White touchdown, was I thought a really nice play by Jaden Daniels. And in general, during this comeback,
21:11I think he was making good and composed decisions. How let's just go to the Monday night football player of the week. It's too late.I've been here, I need to go home. You scooped yourself anyway. You kind of already revealed it.If the listeners are paying attention here, they know you already revealed it.
21:29Yes, it is going to be Christian McCaffrey, who to me, I'm just giving it a little bit as an award here because of how composed, how much better he's run this season than I expected. And it's a pat on the back for Kyle Shanahan for actually executing the plan of giving him fewer touches and giving Kalon Black more carries. He ends up with nine catches for 53 yards and 16 carries for 64 yards. But it was really the efficiency early in the game.So let's listen to one of those Christian McCaffrey touchdowns.Caphrie, I formation behind Purdy. Here's the snap cue.Christian looking, pushing, pushing, pushing, and he's in.
22:07Touchdown 49ers.The drive's end in six.Number two on the night for CMC, and that was all about effort.I think he's pointing up to his parents. Both of them were in the stands and the broadcast kept cutting to them.Pro move by Ed McCaffrey there to cover both of those, his mouth.when he was clearly stressed about some situations. It's like Luke McCaffrey's on the other team
22:36and Christian McCaffrey's obviously on the leading the 49ers.I thought he had a great game. You know, it was kind of cool watching after he fumbled. It was a great punchout, right? But after that, it's like his first fumble in like over 500 touches. And the broadcast was sort of detailing like what he did.He went and apologized to everyone and then it was like steaming and stewing on the sideline. And then they go right back to him.
23:01in fact, they were so, the defense at that point was so nervous about some of theexplosive plays that they were giving a lot of cushion in the coverage, which theytightened down on a little bit later. But they were so nervous about it.And then there's like a two-back set in and Brock Purdy's like, why is ChristianMcCaffrey literally wide open on the left flat?Cool.I'm going to throw it to that guy.
23:23And just like big gain after big game, they go on something like a 14 play drive, theseries after, you know, after he had.he had fumbled their next offensive series. And he's the one that scores a touchdown. You know, for me, it's like really good teams do those like poetry moment things likethat and really good players know how to execute them.I love that shout out and that that context. And that's so true.
23:47This 49ers team is awesome.I do think they're the best team in the NFL.They led the NFL in DVOA, which is my favorite total efficiency stat by a lot.Like they are way ahead of number two.I think people, you know, nitpick here and there and schedule, like, it takes schedule into account, all that. They're just complete and they can find different ways to win.And one group I don't think has gotten enough credit, which I think stood out tonight.Like, their offensive line is playing really well.
24:15They've been healthy up front for the first time in a while. They have a lot of continuity there. They obviously coach it up well. You have a first ballot Hall of Famer in Trent Williams.I think they've been run blocking much better, but they've really been past protecting well. The four-man rush for the commanders in the first half, guess how many pressures they had, Jordan?Zero.Zero.
24:37See, you know.I was tracking that the whole game, damn it.And yes, they got more in the second half when they sent some pressures and that's good.I think it was two entertaining teams going back and forth. But yes, Christian McCaffrey gets the award here this week just because I really appreciated how hard he has run.I had my doubts coming off that heavy workload season.but he is just an absolute force. That was the player of the week presented by Nationwide
25:01for your insurance and financial needs.Nationwide is on your side.So is Brock Purdy quickly because we're going to get out of here. But Brock Purdy in the pocket is so calm against pressureand he makes it look so easy. And some of these throws are rather easy, but they're not all easy. And I'm just really appreciating how good he is.
25:24And sometimes you have to take a step backand realize like, man, we're really here. The Brock Purdy, Kyle Shanahan era is really strong together, Jordan. You've had a front row seat for it.And I always say the Eagles and the Rams are the defining teams of this decade. But man, the 49ers aren't that far off.And they have a real chance this year to go to their third Super Bowl under Kyle Shanahan. And it would be their second under Brock Purdy.
25:49And I think they're just at a higher level offensively than they've ever been. And he's found his quarterback, Kyle Shanahan.and these two guys, it's just great to see him improving.Don't you, like, I don't want to put words in your mouth, but to me he is a better player than he's ever been.Like, it's been a steady improvement, and he's still a young player. And I do like to take a step back and appreciate that sometime
26:11that this kid is awesome.I just think I was thinking about this earlier today.I think, you know, when I was a beatwriter, one of the coolest things that you could, like, be a witness towas watching young people, grow up and like watching people become who they are, right? But putting putting the work in to do it andhaving the right people around them to do that. And sometimes it doesn't happen that way. And sometimesit does. And with Brock Purdy, I agree. I think it's been a steady ascension year over year over
26:43year with him. He is sometimes we've had years where he's, we're like, okay, he's got this thing, but he's just still not really doing this thing. And then there was the perimeter throws that werecoming along, but then the yak stuff went away. And then, you know, now we're seeing theaccumulation of all of this experience and lived lessons that he's had. And also the play callerhas had, I think, as well in figuring out what is right for them both and what is right forBrock Purdy. And what is right for him is pretty much everything at this point, because thereis not really a throw that I think he can't make. And I think he's playing about as well as we seeweek over week from any quarterback in the NFL. And he's not making bad.
27:23mistakes with the football for the most part either. We have a chat that says all roads lead to chief speeding the 49ers into Super Bowl again.Man, I couldn't take that for Kyle Sagan. That would be too much.I would give the 49ers a chance here. But are those the two best teams in the NFL right now?I still, maybe I'm like a little bit of a doubt.I think so if I had to choose the second one.
27:49But I guess I feel stronger right now that for now, the 49,I'm taking over every team on a neutral field, including the Chiefs.I'd have to think about two, three.Right.It only matters so much, but here's the thing about Purdy. He's now elevating everyone else because for all the excuses, all these different teams have, rightfully so with different injuries and what they're missing, the 49ers have a lot of them too.And they're just getting it done.
28:15They are having a really special season now.I mentioned Terry McLaurin earlier.leaves with what appeared to be a serious injury didn't look good we'll have to find out what thatinjury is i am a jerk i guess because i think of like the downside of all this stuff and you know hehad 500 yards last year he was he was hurt this year i i'm just in the habit of quickly checkingthe contracts he has no guaranteed money on his contract he's that's actually a contract he signedyears and years ago and just one of those moments that's just one of those moments that's just one of thoseyou really hope like that wasn't the last snap for Terry McLaren
28:56because he really defines that Washington franchiseand it's something we can talk about in the distant futurebecause hopefully it's something where they can figure something out with this contract. But it's something that I'm sure people in the commanders organizationwere thinking when they saw that hopefully not as serious as all that.Heck, I don't like Indiana down night.Maybe let's go back to that Rashad White touchdown. Why not earlier?
29:17It's out of place now, but I love Bram Weinstein. And so let's hear during the commanders come back, which frankly gave us a much better show, Jordan, put a big smile on your face. You always have a smile on your face.To the right, White and Senate to the left.Empty backfield first and goal.Jane has to grab that with one hand,
29:36throws at the center of the field.Touchdown!Touchdown Washington.Rashad White.But there's a penalty flag down in the offensive backfield.Pick it up.There's no foul.Yes.
29:46Yes.This game is back on.Jane Dato's to Rashad White, nine-yard touchdown pass, and they're an extra point away from being down six. They both remind me of you so much.I'm on, I'm serious.Like, their enthusiasm, like the way back on, like, pick it up with the flag. The game is so back on.It is just, I just, I know why you love them so much.
30:13I love them.I think that they just remind me of what it feels like to watch football with you, which I'mlucky to do every weekend at this point. And you can't get away from me. I will continue tomutter and mumble in your general direction while you have seven sets of headphones on.Yeah, that's why I put my headphones on just to keep the Jordan news out. But yes, that wasLondon Fletcher on the call. And he is such a funny homer. They also have Logan Paulson, who's on that broadcast, who brings kind of the analytical X's and O's. And he pointed outhow Kyle Shanan's going to get aggressive late. He absolutely did. He's pointing out that like the
30:49Stefan Diggs choice route is absolutely the most effective play in this offense. They hit him on a big fourth down in this play. And Stefan Diggs is going to have to step up now.I mean, he's going to get open until he's 45 years old.But Lunded Fletcher really cracked me up because on the late penalty, which kept the drive alive, they were trying to figure out who the player was on, what the penalty was.And he just goes, I don't care who's it on or what it is, as long it's on them. And then that's just like, that's fandom.
31:17And that's why I was happy.I'm always rooting for a close game in the end.So we have a bigger show. It's a great question from our friend John Byrne, who I see makes these really fun. You're on with us,I think pretty much weekly, John, thank you for that.
31:32And you did say,you aptly pointed out,can you imagine commentating with me?A classic Greg Rosenthal twist.Yes,actually,I will be commentatingwith Greg Rosenthal
