Leafs Gold Nights tonight.
Marner spoke with the media this morning,
and I was surprised,
but I credit him and the Golden Nights for doing that.
I think that was the right play.
I do wonder if it opens
the door for him not speaking after the game.
They'll say, well,
I spoke earlier. He doesn't need to speak after.
Dude, he's going to have to speak
after the game. Like...
Really? I don't know. I think if they win, he will.
If they win, he should. If I'm him, I'm like,
yeah, I'll go out and talk. Absolutely.
But if it's crazy and the Leafs win,
You think he'll still talk?
I do.
Who do you think the people are going to ask for, man?
You know how many media members are going to be down there?
You can ask all they want, though, dude.
It's up to the team.
If he spoke, yeah, if he spoke today already,
he could say I spoke already.
But you know what?
It is up to him at that point.
He doesn't have an obligation to speak again after the game.
You know, he did his media.
He's done some sit-downs.
He's done some one-on-ones and stuff.
I think the natural thing, oh, is, yeah, to probably speak after the game.
But you see how it goes.
I think it'll be, you know, Hayes, you started the show.
I think it'll be an emotional night tonight for him, for his teammates, for the Leafs players, for the fans, certainly.
So there's going to be an electricity around it.
Like, again, I'm not a booer or cheerer or whatever, but I can certainly understand.
I've been talking to people.
This game has been circled on people's calendars for how long?
Oh, six months.
Since the schedule came out, right?
Since the day it came out.
It came out.
The schedule came out.
We've talked about it.
You know, a small dose, 10%, 20% was nine days ago, whatever that was.
You're going to see the full Monty tonight.
I don't know what that means as far as how much, you know, again, I've had people that have reached out to me and said,
I'm going to cheer during this and I'm going to boo the hell out of them during that.
And they're people like you and I.
We'll see.
Yeah, we'll see what happens.
And I think ultimately if you're the Leafs, though, as I pointed out last hour,
you know, like the guys who are still here, Matthews, Tavaris, Riley,
Willie's not playing tonight.
I doubt they look at it this way.
They're all playing the role like it's any other game.
We just got to go out and get two points.
And you're going to put in an effort every night.
They are desperate.
They've got to win.
They've got to get points.
But if there was ever a time for them to look in the mirror and say,
we really got to win one tonight, it's tonight.
You know, like this is the game.
Your fans, if your fans leave the building with their tails between their legs,
because you know what it'll stop the booing?
5-1 Vegas.
That stops it.
You know, Vegas so quickly.
If Vegas is up 3-0 after the first period, it'll be dead in there.
Dead.
And what kept the Tavares thing going was the Islanders won.
and one big.
When Tavares went back, I want to say it was 6-1, but they smoked them.
Scored early, through hits, and it just kept building and building,
and it became a party where if Vegas comes up flying and scores two, three minutes into the game,
it'll get quiet.
It'll get quiet.
And then if they're up two or three-nothing after the first, Lee fans will say,
why am I so engaged?
Why do I get a bother hating somebody or cheering somebody now?
Yeah, when the players aren't even feeling it.
know what I mean? So I would hope
they take that into consideration and they
owe it, they owe their fans a lot
in big moments. They really owe them
one tonight and I'd like
to see it. I hope it happens. I'm curious
with Stollars making his
return, like it's a big
game for the return noodles.
It really is, guys. That's
all I thought about. But again
there's no perfect
situation. You've got to go and play.
Now I thought this.
Aiden Hill, I thought
was one goal away from getting the hook 10 days ago.
Against the Leaves.
Against the Leaves.
That was his first game back after a lengthy injury.
And, you know, the Leafs started quick, and he didn't look sharp.
And Vegas didn't look sharp.
They looked lethargic.
And that game was one goal away from getting away from the Vegas Golden Knights.
Yeah, when's the right time to put him in?
Colorado's here Sunday.
You've got to play.
It's got to play.
It never stops.
And the Colorado one is a weird one, too, because isn't it a 130 start or something?
Yeah, it is an afternoon game, you're right.
Which I look today.
So Colorado plays tonight.
They fly all the way here tomorrow, and then they play an afternoon game on Sunday.
But, again, that's not a perfect start.
I think if Snow Lars is available to go, you're starting him.
And, you know, I don't know if he's your one.
I think what he is is one of your three.
and you need him to play well, but there might be some rest on his game.
That's the thing.
The team's not play well in front of him.
Lees-P.R. just tweeted out that Hilderby has been assigned to the Marleys.
So they're not sticking with three guys for now.
It doesn't mean they can't call up Hilderby, you know, at some point or that they won't.
I would think probably when they go out west, they might want to bring three goalies.
Sure.
Definitely possible.
But they need Stollars, you know, they need them to be hot.
They need them to play really well.
They need great goaltending down the stretch.
They got, what, 32 games?
They need great goal-tending.
The other thing, too, is this Oliver Ackman-Larsin, he doesn't miss games, which is crazy.
I know.
You know he's not 100 percent, but he's a warrior.
Good for him.
He's playing, and I think Carlos going tonight, too.
Here's Mike Johnson, our Tiesin hockey analyst, joining us here on the Maple Toto Hotline.
Was that a surprise to you that Stollars is back and he's playing, and what do you expect out of him?
A little bit, boys.
I mean, we knew he was around.
We knew that it was maybe we'll play before the Olympics.
The Olympics break is a couple two and a half weeks away.
And I mean, does this mean, is this, listen, you guys said it.
If he's able to play, you play him, right?
If he's healthy, he's good to go.
He's one year or two.
He's your starter coming into the season.
You play him.
But also, like, does this somehow tell the team we're not going to load up for the
Mariner game?
Like, we're just going business as usual.
If Solar is our guy, we're not going to play wool because he's ready, he's sharper because he gives him a better chance against Mitch Marner's return.
I wonder if there's just sort of like, we're going to have business as usual.
The fact that it's Vegas, the fact that it's Marna returning, means nothing to our team because all we're worried about is trying to get points and trying to get closer in the standing.
So a little bit of surprise sort of snuck up on us, but if he's good to go, it's good to go.
And they were clear that they were not going to carry three.
They're only going to carry two.
So here we go.
One of the strengths of the lease coming into this season was goaltending depth.
And so we'll see if now was finding the first game where both their goalies are actually going to play together,
can they start stringing some games as a duo together that give the least an advantage in that more?
And I said not. Has it been the case all year?
Needs to start for the last 30, given where the least are the standards.
Johnny, what kind of response do you think you're going to get?
I basically have an understanding what I think the fans are going to get up to when Marner hits the ice.
You were in the building in Vegas.
Like, Brian was just mentioning these players kind of, oh, the fans, like a response in a big game.
Do you even think that they think like that, or they had that mentality entering this game?
I don't think the players are considering how the fans will react to any outcome.
No, I think there's zero of that in their mindset.
Now, I would imagine the competitor in the players, the pride, the ego, for the guys that were closest to the market.
and that's, you know, for Matthews and for Nealander without playing, but for Riley, for the guys who are he's supposed to do.
Those guys specifically, like, yeah, we really want to beat him tonight because, you know, he chose to leave us.
He chose to go somewhere else for a variety of reasons.
So for those players, they might have a little bit of personal sort of motivation.
For the rest of the team, they don't need Mitch Marter for motivation.
There are plenty of motivation sitting right in front of him in the stand is where they're sitting and what's going on with them right now.
So I don't think so.
I don't think they're particularly inspired to be great to help the fans enjoy a game or Marrers back.
I think they're trying to be as good as they can be because they have to do that to get points.
I was on a plane this morning.
Did anybody dare ask Austin Matthews about Mitch Marner?
I didn't see it.
Didn't see it happen.
The guy would have loved Mark Masters.
Masters will do it tonight.
Masters would have gone right up to him and said, hey, I know you've said this 10 days ago,
but what do you think of makes you feel like that?
Any chance you want to talk about it today?
Well, I mean, go ahead.
Did anyone see off and talk at all this morning?
No, I'm not sure he did.
So I don't think, I always thought Craig Barouba in his, oh, my God, guys.
Like, as an aside, that is a gnarly gash on his head.
I was trying to guess, like, what kind of gym accident could have that happen?
Like, that looks like a 45-pound metal plate.
spell on your head from a story above you.
It's not here or here. It's right here.
Richard, do I have a mark on the side of my face?
Not so much there.
It is huge.
So anyways, glad he's okay, but that is a, that is, I saw him talk because I saw the, the, the stitches all over his head.
Yeah, those stitches are extreme, man.
Like that, that's like concussion protocol you think.
That's dangerous stuff, fractured skull stuff.
Yeah.
That is wild.
But, okay, so Johnny, what do you want to see him wear on his head tonight to draw attention away from, you know, that gash on his forehead?
Oh, my God.
He can wear, I mean, he can wear a baseball cap out there.
No, he said he's got, the reason he spoke about it this morning, because you guys are going to see it tonight.
So he's going with nothing.
But if you put on, like, a rug would be the greatest thing of all time.
As though, no one would, like, that'd be something that you know.
And NHL coach would never do, but maybe having fun of you're rolling along.
things are going great, but it's got to be business as usual for the Toronto made police.
The game, it doesn't feel normal.
Like, you know, noodles, you've been traveling around the league, I've been traveling around the league.
Even non-Torona-Marcus have a mild to significant curiosity in watching this unfold.
I think everyone expects booing.
I think everyone sort of anticipates, you know, a more balanced, mostly cheers and maybe some boos
during the video tribute.
maybe Mitch gets the middle a little bit emotional there.
Clearly, the least players are not going to go out of their way
to embrace the day or Mitch or anything like that.
They made that clear last week.
But around the league, guys, this is perceived as an interesting game to watch.
So the Leafs cannot get away from that.
They know this is going to be one with a lot of eyeballs on it.
But Mike Johnson, our buddy Dave McCarthy,
saying that Matthews did not speak this morning.
So there you go.
Matthews didn't even speak.
I'm joking about it.
I know, of course.
I know.
But listen, he's going to speak on it at some point.
You know, this is why last week was, I thought, somewhat ridiculous.
It's like, hey, it's coming for you again.
And tonight there's going to be interns and radio stations that are never there.
You know, there's going to be a ton more people that will be hovering around.
All the media is going to be there.
Press box stacked.
Yes.
Like usually there's like, you know, empty seats here and there in the press box.
It will be standing room only up there today.
It'll be stacked.
And there was, you know, the report that came out yesterday that we've referenced and talked
about that, you know, insinuated, or I guess reported, that Marner was like overly sensitive
to the market, which I don't think is a surprise.
I think most people have stood that by the end.
But you were around the team pretty closely, you know, not in the room, not on the planes
or the hotels and all that, but you had more access than the average person.
Did you pick up on that, Johnny?
Like what and what kind of indicators maybe were you witnessing that made you realize,
Okay, Marner, pre and post contract negotiation six and a half years ago was a different person.
I mean, when you talk about the contract negotiations, it's sort of tied into when, you know, he was 22, right?
Like some of that is just sort of maturing in his life.
And so some of the changes in his behavior, maybe or his mood or his sensitivities might have just sort of been happening as he became more famous and more well-known or whatever it might be.
But the way I looked at it, Hazy, was that
the more
that Mitch would talk about
how little it matters what people said about him,
the more you knew what was being said about him was bothering them.
And I'm not trying to be funny.
No, that's true.
I think that's fair.
A lot of people would be that way, you know what I mean?
And the more he denounced the coverage
and dismiss its impact or even knowledge of it,
the more you knew that he was getting it.
And there's lots of reports about whether it's him consuming it
or whether people in his camp consuming it and giving it to him, whatever.
You know, he rode the highs really high,
and I think he rode the lows of it lower than most.
And I think that's sort of when you could tell.
When he acted like he didn't care,
is when you knew that he was caring the most.
So, again, we'll put that game aside
because there's so much else going on.
But, you know, the importance of getting to the Olympic break
they have seven games left.
And, you know, another thing coming tonight is Ross was Anderson's making his debut for the Golden Knights.
So Vegas will be even better than they were last night in terms of their roster.
So Anderson making his debut.
But, you know, the least are three points out now with Boston winning last night,
Buffalo winning again.
They're three points back at Boston, four back of Buffalo.
And look good, too.
Like, they –
Yeah, those teams are –
Johnny, you saw them last night.
Buffalo looks like – they look legit, man.
They're fast.
fast and they get the puck off the wall and attack off the rush and they get after you.
I mean, Toronto plays them in two games.
Tuesday.
I guess for now Tuesday it is.
We have that game and it'll be curious to see how fast they look against Toronto.
But yes, I think Hayes, the point is a very salient one.
Is that they can't go, whatever, seven games left, they can't go two and five, right?
And fall seven behind the playoff picture and have three more teams.
jump over top of them.
And it's got to be a challenge.
They have, what?
The game of the night, Vegas is a good team and all the rest of it.
Colorado, Buffalo, they go out west.
Like, this is a really tough run when they're not healthy.
Guys are out.
And let's be honest, the guys who are playing are not anywhere near healthy either.
Like, they need to get to the All-Star break.
They need a couple weeks.
Now, Willie won't get that if he's going to the Olympics.
But, like, Matthew Nye is desperate for a break.
He needs like two weeks of hip flexor rehab because I stand there between the benches and I've talked about it sort of off camera trying to find incidents of it.
He leaves the ice not because he's a guy milking attention, but because he's in pain and discomfort.
He leaves the ice three times a game wincing and sort of grabbing at his leg.
And no one's hit him.
He just stopped funny and it just hurts him.
You can tell he's been dragging him a leg around for flight some time here.
So, yeah, it's huge, Hayes.
They tread water at least until the Olympic break.
Get everyone away.
I think Tavares could use the break to get his legs underneath them again.
Both goalies, healthy and sharp coming out of it.
They don't, as far as the league-wide, don't have many players in Olympics, right?
They only have a few, compared to some teams who have 10, 11, 12.
So they should have an advantage of rest and getting better there.
Yeah, it's a significant time here.
You can't have to sort of look to the break and dismiss the impact of the game is leading up to it.
Yeah, and it's, yeah, I mean, it's a huge effect on what I think Brad Treelvin could do.
If you can go five and two, you might be in a playoff spot or you're certainly on the door of it.
You know, four and three, you'll be close enough.
You go two and five, like you said, one in six, oh and seven, your season's over.
Like, it's probably over at that point.
And, you know, they're fighting with the teams.
the Atlantic and you look at the Metro.
We talked about it yesterday. Carolina's in a really good
spot, obviously.
But Pittsburgh now is six
points clear of
being on the outside looking in. Six
points clear of Philly, who's in fourth in that division.
Crosby for Hart?
Well, I mean, it's
yeah, I mean, he looked,
that tip goal he had last night
was a beauty, man.
There is no one.
In place, right? Yeah.
A chop tip, that is one of the 10thens.
God can eat chop.
tip of puck. Nobody five feet away from the net can chop it and put it under the bar like that guy.
Anything around the end.
Find the angle the ladder. Where the puck's like where the puck's coming from, whether it's
vertical or a result or whether he's on the flip of the crease or that one was like ash marks.
The chop tip is one of his one of his favorites. The bank job would be the other one, which a lot of
guys do around the league now, Zach Eiman and Tyler Bertuzzi, where they just sort of stacked
everything on the back door to try to give a guy a target. Yeah, he's got a few that he can
patent over the course of his.
River. That was nice and three goals
and 54 seconds.
None of them on the power play. How'd that
even happen? That is wild.
The other thing to, Johnny,
his backhand, I think it's the best in the league.
Him and Patrick Kane and Paul Korea
might be the three best ever
at the backhand.
Like it's just, Paul Korea used to have a backhand
kind of a slap shot, man. It was disgusting.
Mike Madano scored a backhand slap shot on me one time.
wall skated by and said, what the hell was that?
And I was like, I don't know.
It's in my net already.
It was outrageous.
Modano came from right to left and came across the slot and backhand slapped it.
It was like Reg Dunlop passed the puck.
Yeah.
It was under the bar.
That's exactly what Korea did in Anaheim one night.
He took like this backhand Reg Dunlop slap shot.
And I was like, what the hell?
I've never seen anything like that, man.
Outrageous.
Yeah.
outrageous.
Well, you guys see the sauce cane gave the other night?
Like the backhand sauce.
To brink it?
That was 10 feet in the air?
So gross.
Like so sick.
Patty Kane is feeling it, though.
I watched him live while it was the last Sunday.
Like, you know, he's, he's not just, it's not just, hey, I'm putting my time in.
Like, he looks, you know, coming off, what was it, hip resurfacing?
Resurfacing.
He was out for a long time, yeah.
Like, he looks comfortable out there.
Like really comfortable.
That Detroit team is, you're not sleeping on them.
As you talked about that goal turning?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like John Gibson today, noodles would, what, second in the Bezina?
I think Thoreau could still get it.
But Gibson probably comes second.
He's been 16 and 2 in his last 18 starts.
Yeah.
It's been unreal.
Crazy run he's on right now.
And I'm going to tell you, I didn't think he had that in him still.
I thought, you know, he might be an upgrade on the inconsistency
that had in years past, but he's not going to be elite.
I've been wrong.
He's been the lead.
He's been really good.
Yeah, he's been unbelievable.
I agree 100%.
I thought they shorted up.
When you have Talbot, you have Gibson,
okay, you've got two potential guys who can go on little runs here.
It's a nice tandem.
But they've been really good.
And it took, I think Gibson started 0 and 3,
and he didn't look at it.
And pulled into first start, and you're like, oh, this is a.
And then they settled in.
The other thing is that cider, like that,
He's mean and good.
Really good.
Even Edmond, his partner, the duo, like, find them up for the next 10 years for Detroit.
Right?
Guys, they're going to take a step, and you're paying the guys all that money sooner or later.
Stevie, everyone kept asking Stevie, why didn't you guys do it?
The guys that he paid the money to, the young guys, the first round picks,
like when they take that next step, that's when you make a move, and that's what Cider's done.
Obviously, they're getting some saves, but Cider taking a step.
Dylan Lark in the last couple years is playing a very different kind of edge.
Yeah, Lucas Raymond.
Those are the guys you invested in.
If they don't take a step, you're completely screwed, completely.
Agreed.
Agreed.
Yeah, they're doing it, man.
Like, they're doing it.
It's interesting what's going on in the league.
Like, you know, you look at the Bruins again last night, and last year, they did the
kind of retool.
They bottomed out, they retooled.
Pittsburgh, bottomed out, kind of retooled, and look where they are.
and I just wonder if that's a lesson for other teams.
You know, you've got to get it right.
You've got to keep the right people.
You've got to sign the right guys in the offseason.
You've got to bank on health.
Like, there's a lot of things that have to break your way.
But here's a good question, or here's a question for you guys.
Given where Pittsburgh was at the start of the season,
I thought they were the only team that was a seller.
What does Kyle Dubus do at the deadline now?
If he had plans, like, is everything changed now?
I mean, they're well in the playoffs, noodles.
I just said it.
They're way into the playoffs.
But he's got Stu Skinner that he could potentially flip because he's unrestricted.
You know, Kulak, the guys he traded Jari for, like you look at it.
Anthony Manta.
He's got some, exactly.
He's got some players there that are currency.
But, you know, he might have to go to Sid and go, what do you want me to do here?
Because, you know, my plan was this.
And all of a sudden, like, Gino turns the clock back last night.
night, you look at some players, like, it's almost like everything's kind of come together,
and I don't know if he meant for that, or it just kind of threw osmosis.
But he's got some big decisions here in about a month to, you know, where are we going,
type of thing, if you're Pittsburgh.
I think he can kick it down, kick the can down the road one more year noodles,
because the only UFA they have up front, Malkin, of course, so he's sort of unique,
they're not going to trade him.
But Kevin Hayes, you're not getting a big return.
Noel Chari not get a big return.
They just re-signed Blake Lazazzo.
So that should tell you something that they're keeping him
as defending UFA.
So the only guy up front really that's going to get you something
significant is Mantha.
And can you live without the
prospect or the second rounder? I don't know if he gets
the first round pick. So I don't know
what they have. And maybe they trade Kulak.
Maybe they trade Skinner. Those might be two guys,
but then they ride with Shilob's and whatever
defense them have and don't think it decimates
them. But he doesn't have to decide
on Rust or Raquel
or guys like that because there's still
a little bit term left on them, but
I can't see, he's done a good job of sort of
serving both masters of both
trying to be competitive for Sid and the guys,
but also, you know, they moved out some contracts
and have themselves in a better position going forward,
but that metro has been not good.
Like all those, like, Philly and Jersey and Washington,
I thought Jersey and Washington were going to be good this year.
And they have,
haven't been.
So, yeah, there's a real opportunity for them to get the playoffs.
And if they play in the playoffs right now in Pittsburgh, they get the Islander in the first round.
Exactly.
You're thinking you could win around.
In the second round in what?
Carolina is some unstoppable force in the playoffs?
No.
I mean, I don't think we'd say that.
So, yeah, I don't think he goes down that road if they're in the same spot on whatever,
March 6th in the deadline.
Yeah, there's a real opportunity for them to make a little bit of noise.
I mean, it's possible in the playoffs.
Maybe he adds at the deadline.
That's what I'm saying.
Like, I'm looking at that.
This has been a shift throughout the season where the team is dictated where the manager,
his thought process goes, right?
And then, you know, conversely, you're looking at Vancouver or teams like that where you're like,
oh, I didn't see, you know, maybe you saw it coming, but I thought they'd be better this year
and now they're not.
The Rangers was another team I thought was going to have.
Well, the Rangers are crazy.
They hire Sullivan and they are a disaster.
And as someone pointed out online, the head coach in Pitt was on the bench and you.
York a couple years ago.
So they've flipped, you know, they lose him, he goes to pit.
He's got them driving in the right direction.
And they go out and get Sullivan, who was a last piece higher.
You know, that's the guy.
It's like, well, he'll get us back.
Over the hump higher.
And they're dead last in the east and sending out letters to fans.
Yeah.
The letter again was so crazy, man.
And that's just a message to your players, too.
It's like, we're toast.
And they are anyway.
but, you know, like the Rangers are dead last in the East.
Yeah.
Usually the GM and the owner and the coach who bluff it that he still loves the team.
But then when you see the note, you're like, oh, we are actually garbage.
You're done.
You're finished.
What do you give for Archie Panarin, though?
Like, that's the thing, the dry hair floating around.
Now he gets points, but, you know, is he a guy that it, you know, puts your team over the top?
Is he another threat?
Like, I think he's ultimately, like, ultra-skilled.
don't get me wrong, but is he a guy that you view Johnny as, you know,
hey, he's going to put our team to that next stratosphere,
or is he, you know, a good addition to already a real quality team?
I think a pretty direct comparable to Panarin is Mitch Marner,
guys who are just, and probably better than Mitch Marner,
but like prolific regular season scores,
and then when they get to playoffs,
they're not they're still good but not as and i think for some of the same reasons because they're
past first guys they rely on time and space that they find in the regular season that's not
as available in the playoffs uh you know they're not super physical or physically you know strong
in the way that they play to create their offense like so he's a good player but he can't be
he's got to go in and be our lead dog he's got to be a support player second or third or fourth
down the death chart he'll make you better and you know i think washington's been pretty up
front that they want and influx of skill.
Well, that could be, he could be that.
If you don't have a good power play, Colorado's a good team with a bad power play.
Utah is a good team with a bad power play.
He would help in spots like that.
Like, I don't know if he wants to go to Utah, but for two months, Utah's a good team.
You put Panarin on there with what some of us they have.
That's where I think he maybe makes more sense, not as, you know, put him in here and
expect him to be our number one option right away.
Right.
All right, Johnny.
Well, enjoy it tonight.
Enjoy the weekend.
It's going to be a fun weekend.
one for the Leafs. Vegas tonight, Colorado on Sunday.
And this is going to be a make-or-break type of operation this weekend.
I don't think there's any disputing now. So enjoy it, and we'll do it again early next week.
All right, boys, enjoy the game tonight and bundle up this weekend because it is going to be
frosty. Crazy, crazy cold, polar vortex.
There he is Mike Johnson joining us here on the Maple Toyota Hotline. It's time to Toyota in the
20-25 Prius. Go up to 72 kilometers on battery alone, then seamlessly switch the hybrid mode.
check it out at Maple Toyota near Canada's
want to land on the Maple Auto Mall.
Yeah, I'm at the rink.
I was looking up on the weather app.
Like, you know, you can check the hours.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm at the rink.
7 a.m. on Sunday.
It is going to feel like minus, like, 41 or something like that.
So we're going to be getting into the car at around 635 a.m.
Dude, you've got to start that thing at 5.15.
You have to start the golf cart up.
Does the golf cart still a lot?
Now, I've got parked.
This guy's big pimping now, man.
It got shipped out.
It got shipped out.
It got shipped out.
It was a long time coming.
You went from the golf cart to the souped up golf car, man.
This guy's a real deal now.
Well, the golf cart, it was a great.
I miss that car, man.
It just zipped around.
Dude, no, you don't.
Like, you're a cool dude and you're a celebrity.
And when you wheeled in that golf cart, it's like, this isn't adding up, man.
It's not adding up.
Well, I see six foot four.
That's the problem.
him is how tall I was.
Like that thing, when I would push the seat back,
it would hit, it would lock, it would hit the
back, you know what I mean? Like it would get
so far back, it would like be hitting the chairs
in the back. It was like Mr. Bean
cruising around. You were like Mr. Bean with their
head through the side room. That's what I looked like.
I get my golf cubs in there
and, you know, motor up. People are like, what is
this guy doing, man? Dude, I don't know if I
told you this, but my dad
used to have a work van.
And one night he came back for my
brother's hockey games. This guy hit a
horse. Oh, no way.
Like a giant, if a horse, if you hit a horse in the go-cart, you're kaput.
Yeah. Oh, yeah, of course. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. You go right through the car. Yeah, a horse falls on a
go-cart. You're smushed. Yes. Yeah, 100%. You're in big trouble. That's a big part of it, too. Safety has to
be considered. And it has been, it has been. But yeah, that thing will be getting warmed up right
and early. So prepare yourself. Go time this weekend.
Hang on a sec before we go to break, Joe from the bridge,
can you just show my neighbor's dog Harvey watching Overdrive up in Collingwood?
I got to do it.
He's a big fan every day.
Look at him, little Harvey watching.
I love it.
Harvey.
MJ, Harvey Harvey.
Shout out to Harvey.
What a legend Harvey is.
I wanted the picture of Dana Carvey.
That's where I thought we were going on.
Dana Carvey, yes.
We'll get to Dana Carvey.
Head wound, massive head wound hairy, hairy or whatever.
Head wound, massive head wound hairy, or whatever.
That was the name of the character, massive head wound.
He'd go to parties and people would be like, oh, God.
I think there's a 45-second clip.
I've watched that show every Saturday night, night.
Don't remember.
You'll remember.
We'll play.
All right.
We've got to play it.

The MPHL playoff race tightens as the push begins February 13th.
In the north, the Iron Man and Blitz are fighting for positioning.
In the south, the killer bees, jets, Irish, and bluebirds battle through a crowded standing.
Every shift now carries playoff weight.
All right, Melon, Friday, brought you by Boston Pizza.
Canada's favorite sports brother this January at BP.

Every single day, enjoy the pastas you love at prices you can't miss.
Hustling your local BP tonight.
So at least go all nights tonight.
What a night it's going to be down there.
It is freezing.
Like, this is tough when you're waiting to get into the building.
This is move people in quick type of operation.
Better be.
But a Friday night, indoors.
You know, you've got nothing going on tomorrow for the most part.
This is generally...
There'll be a groove in there, man.
Yeah, this is a Florida type of evening, for sure.
Yes.
For a lot of people.
Do you remember the behavior when you were younger at this kind of night?
Like, guys would go outside with T-shirts on and blow a dart and feel no pain.
Yeah.
Well, you'll see that at football games, right?
Like on Sunday, like that Bears game last week, it was freezing.
No shirt guy.
Yeah.
Which, that is crazy.
Like, booing and cheering is.
one thing. What is going no shirt
to the game doing for anybody?
What is that proving? What is
that that that's going to boost your team's
morale? They're going to win the
ball game because you have hypothermia
by the end of it. That's crazy. It was an awkward
exchange last weekend is when
one of Brable's ex-teammates
basically
said that Mike Vrable always had
booze in his stall and if it was
really cold like he was always taking
a sip and the guys knew that if they wanted
to hammer it, it was in
his stall.
I was like,
the guy's a head coach in the NFL.
Like,
I don't know.
Do you know the exchange of talking about?
No, I don't.
I didn't see that.
No, I didn't see that either.
One of Vrabel's ex-teammates was claiming that this guy would have a flask in his stall,
Mike Vrable.
Okay.
I was like,
flask guy.
Well,
I mean,
listen,
I kind of get it,
you know,
and he played well.
He won.
He was a Super Bowl champ.
Like,
I guess if it's so cold,
like the idea that,
You're going out there to hit people and short sleeves and I guess.
Wasn't that the Red Sox that took a shot before the game?
Oh, yeah.
The bunch of idiots.
Johnny Damon and.
There's all kinds of stories about them.
Who knows what those guys get up to.
There's a bunch of athletes that are coming out 20 years after their career and be like,
I had to smoke weed before every game.
They're admitting it.
They're like, I couldn't play.
I was like, how could you play a professional?
professional sport after hammering wheat.
That I can't understand.
I can't either, dude.
Yeah, I can't.
I can't.
Well, who was the pitcher that said he was doing like acid or something?
Was it?
Well, there was the old, back in the day, there was, it was like oil can.
Oil can boyd.
Oil can boyd.
That's who it was.
Wasn't it?
Yeah, he was a mess.
Yeah.
Like, I mean, I, wasn't it?
It was for the Yankees, wasn't it?
Well, David Wells pitched that perfect game hungover.
Yeah.
Like, he was severely hungover.
Yeah, he said he was the most hungover any human being has ever been.
Yeah.
He was really hungover.
Yeah.
That means he crawled out of a garbage bag at an hour and hour before the game and made
his way to the Bronx.
But yeah, he was really into some heavy stuff.
He had some problems.
Yeah, he was doing like.
But there was someone that came out recently and said that, you know,
were drinking, I can't remember who it was,
but we're like pretty, pretty hammered playing games
and like we're successful in terms of playing,
which is absolutely crazy.
Like what sport?
I want to say basketball, but I have to look at it.
You can't play basketball.
I don't understand.
Like how you're running so much, how could you ever do that?
Isn't there a story about MJ, you know,
having a few drinks on the golf course and then going and drop it to 60 that?
hammering bud lights and cigars and he went and put up
Jerry Rohnick.
J.R. told that story.
And J.R. hammered the calves that night because he thought there's no way this guy can do anything.
And the Bulls not only won, but M.J. put up like 50 points or whatever.
Like, MJ's just not normal.
Like, that guy's wired different than everybody else.
We never showed the William Shatner eating cereal while driving picture.
What?
You didn't hear, you didn't see this.
I love that.
guy, Captain Kirk.
Yeah, Bill Shatner was driving around somewhere in L.A., I think, if you have it, Joe, posted.
You want to have a nuggy and dip it in sauce while driving is one thing, or a burg?
A bowl of cereal behind the wheel?
But is he have a Tesla like a self-driving Tesla?
This guy is hammering a bowl of, like, corn flakes at granola, whatever it is, grotola.
There's milk in there.
Like, this guy is on the road.
hammering cereal.
Well, listen, these self-driving
cars now, all you have to do is just sit there.
I did it the other day. I drove the Detroit and back
and my car drove me.
But I didn't sit there and eat a
bowl of cereal, which is
outrageous. That's the thing. You've got to be cognizant
to the other drivers who are worried about that.
What about the ice can conditions? Like, does the
stupid car know about
changing lanes? The car drives better than a human,
put it that way. It's outrageous.
Okay.
FSDs. I'm telling you. I'll send you
a video. I'll send you a video. I took a
video while I was driving.
I watched, on the way home after the game,
I think Evanton was playing.
I watched Evanton play, the whole thing.
Wow.
Like the whole game on my phone.
And I was paying attention.
So let me just get this straight.
You're not sitting in the passenger seat, right?
I'm sitting in the driver's seat.
There's a camera inside that watches you to make sure that you can be paying attention,
but it takes over.
It just drives for you.
It's outrageous.
I would never trust that, man.
Yeah, I'd be nervous, too.
Once you get used to it, it is a little bit weird, but it is, I had the self-driving cab in Phoenix this year.
I sat in the back.
The car came and picked me up.
I drove me back to my hotel from Best Buy.
Yeah, I remember you talking about that.
I guess you could have William Shatner did.
You could have brought some cereal or.
Some cereal.
I don't know.
Rob Ford did it, right?
Rob Ford just back when he was reading documents on the Gardner.
Yeah, the DVP was there with the DPP.
Yeah, it might have been the parkway, yeah.
Either way.
That's one of the all-time great picks.
Like, he's a busy guy, Bob Ford.
He had to be summer just driving and reading a massive city document of the utmost of importance.
Yeah, there are some things out there.
Yeah, you got to be careful.
It's a different world now, though.
It's a different world.
And maybe that's what he was doing.
William Shatner, he's like, hey, I'm not even driving.
I'm just hungry.
Serial?
What's wrong with that?
It is crazy, though.
We do have to get to the Dana Carb.
All right, let's play it here.
So this is massive head wound Harry.
back on SNL back in the day.
Dana Carvey, let's play it.
Hey, great party.
I'm sorry, I'm late.
I forgot where you lived.
That's okay, Harry.
I feel dizzy.
Would you like to lay down?
Maybe in the garage?
No, I just need some food to get my strength back.
I lost a lot of blood on the way.
here.
You gotta try some of these shrimp friends.
Oh, I'm sorry, let me help you with that.
I better go see if he's all right.
No, no, no, you stay here.
Oh, you know, yeah, I'm fine.
I just gotta rest for a second.
Yeah, you know, maybe I need to lie down.
How outrageous
I just
Why did you have to invite him?
I'm sorry, he overheard me talking
up Bill and Steve.
What was I going to do?
Oh, my gosh.
The dog's skinned out from
Massive head wound area.
But I don't understand how that skit could go any further than one episode.
Like, that went on for more than one?
I don't know if it did.
I just remember that one.
one in particular.
It's in the Dana Harvey best of.
Like there's some great best-ofs,
Dana Carvey and Chris Farley.
Like Farley's reaction, they're so great.
Spits the food out.
He just snaps.
I'm anticipating, obviously,
the reaction to Mitch Marner.
I'm excited for the game,
all of that.
But I'm not lying.
I want to say, the Craig Barubi's going to walk out there like nothing
happened.
Yeah.
And he's going to have a massive head wound.
Massive head wound.
And just be standing there behind the bench like nothing.
And I guarantee you.
you, it's like a ref will skate over and say, what's going on here?
Like the refs, you know, the refs might not be cognizant of what's happened.
Well, the people behind the bench, that's where it's like there's going to be someone sitting
right behind the bench with a bottle, like a glass of wine sitting down and they're going
to have a Farley reaction like, oh my God, look at that guy's head.
Exactly.
Like Barube's head is not far off Dana Carvey.
You get some filthy loaded people that kind of live like the,
foo-foo life and he turns around with 75 zips on his forehead and has a look at them,
that'll be a reaction.
Yeah.
I need to know more about what happened at Craig Barouba, because his head is, it's wild.
But not missing anything, not missing a pregame, like he could have missed the pregame
chat today, totally reasonable, right?
Totally reasonable.
Craig, he's dealing with some medical stuff.
He'll be at the game tonight.
No, he's out there with a hat on talking and laughing about it and tough his nails and
what a game it's going to be tonight.
It's going to be fun.
Again, I think the Stollars angle,
Johnny brings up an interesting point about
he is somewhat of a distraction from Marner.
If he's ready, you play him.
Whether it's the best team in the league,
worst team in the league,
Marner's here, he's not,
you're going to play him.
I don't know,
he's got to expect Rust.
You know, you build in Rust,
but he's the kind of guy that I feel like last year,
remember, he came back from the long-term injury,
and he was great.
Yeah.
I think, too, it's how the team plays in front of you.
If he has eight shots against in the first period,
and a lot of them are routine saves from the outside,
you can settle into the game.
But, you know, Aidan Hill's, like, first shot against was Willie, like, in tight, back-end,
you know, or something.
I can't remember the goal, but it was a pretty good goal that he gave up.
So, you know, again, it's the chances that you give up that you can help your
goaltender out to kind of, you know, bleed him into the game instead of, you know, breakway or a two-on-one
as his first shot against type of thing.
Well, we will find out soon.
The games on TSN Radio tonight.
It's going to be a fun one.
And then again, Colorado on Sunday, you got, you know, the football games, you get the Raptors
still out West doing their thing.
They've been great recently.
That trade deadline right around the corner.
LeBron and the bus family kind of going at it, that's getting spicy in L.A.
That's some weird reporting out of that scenario.
Yeah.
because there's a big, you know, infighting with the bus kids and all that,
and they've sold the team and stuff got public about, you know, LeBron.
And, you know, they've been really good this year, the Lakers.
And neither of those parties wanted any of that information going public.
I think that's 100% accurate.
Neither party.
Nobody wanted to deal with a LeBron versus the bus family in L.A.
No.
But it's out and it's not leaving.
That is for sure.

Dude, he's 12 under par.
I think there's this dude Blades Brown.
Isn't he, like, 17 years old or something?
Blades Brown.
Who's that?
Dude, I'm telling you, Blades Brown is going to be the real deal.
He's just a youngster.
He's 18.
He's in the lead.
He's 17 under.
Yeah.
He's 18 years old, man.
He was playing last year at 17.
Wow, he was born in 2007.
How gross is that?
That's crazy.
That's nasty.
That's younger than doogie, man.
Wow, that, like that is going to be the pairing tomorrow.
Sheffler Brown.
Sheffler's 17 under.
You imagine being 18 years old and having Scotty Schaeffler breathing down your neck at a gold tournament?
This kid probably doesn't think anything of him, man.
Yeah, he doesn't care.
He'd be like, oh, you go with that great.
That's interesting.
I'd probably try this.
Yeah.
Okay.
Number one player in the world.
Sheffler, 17 under.
Just so nails all the time.
All right, boys.
Well, it's been a fun one today.
Let's see where it comes.
But I'm telling you,
