Brewers ONE WIN AWAY From SAVING MLB From Dodgers Three-Peat
00:00The Brewers are just one win away from doing the unthinkable, beating the Dodgers and potentially saving baseball. Can they get the job done tonight? We brought in the big guns.Jacob Franklin to talk about it.Let's get into it.It's the PHNX DBAQ show going live right now.Dback's podcast coming to you live from Studio K, presented by our friends over at Circle.K.
00:38It is I, your host, for today at least.Damon Farrell, aka Damon Dog, coming to you live right here fromP HNXHQ 3 in downtown Phoenix. And of course, this is the PHNX D-BAC show presented by the fine folks over at GameTime.Head on over to the GameTime app or go to GameTime.com.Download the GameTime app, create an account and use code PHNX and get $20 off your first purchase.Again, that's with code PHNX.It's the only place to be getting your tickets these days.
01:10Terms do apply. As I said, the Dodgers are on.on the brink of elimination. There is one more loss that they can sustain before they are done for this season. And the Brewers have an opportunity to get that done tonight with their game.First pitch happening at 8 p.m. Eastern. And then you got the Ray's Guardians going live right now, but we don't really care about that. We're all about the Brewers.
01:35We're all about the brew crew crew. And I believe we've all been Brewers fan since day one.And no one is a bigger Brewers fan right now than the aforementioned.Jacob Franklin, who is back on the show here at his old home, PHNX Sports, but from his new home in Oregon.Jacob, how are you doing? And how are you experiencing this Dodgers downfall that we're currently in the midst of witnessing?Yeah, I mean, I'm living the dream, right?
02:02Like, any day that the Dodgers leaves a good day,I'm sure their fans would probably look at me and wave their fingers or whateverbecause they've got more rings or whatever.I got a finger right back for them. They lose. If they lose, you know, the next game, Damon,I think that the total number of rings that they've won this year is the same asas their own time of back. So, you know, everything must come to an end at some point. That is certainly the case. And, you know, although I think the last two playoffs,
02:30postseason runs by the Dodgers have been kind of tough to watch, especially from ahater perspective with our hater hats on. But, you know, this is probably the best opportunitythat any team has had of eliminating them. I know the Padres took.them to the brink last year, but we're unable to get the job done despite being big-timefavorites to do so.But this feels pretty insurmountable. There's been one team that's ever come back from 3-0 in the history of Major LeagueBaseball in the playoffs, Jacob.
03:00Do you know who that team is?Was it recent? It's semi-recent.It's modern baseball history. So let me rephrase the question. Is it within the last decade? No.So it's the Red Sox in 2004 then.
03:16Yeah, it is absolutely the Red Sox in 04, beating the Babe Ruth curse and beating the Yankees and the ALCS.So it can be done, but it feels very unlikely. And this Brewer's team feels like they have a pretty special makeup.Do they not?Yeah.I mean, it's, it's good lunch pail baseball.Like they just come in, they get their business done.Like, they've obviously got a little bit of star power here and there.
03:42But, like, you know, you're getting contributions from a guy named Sal Freelic.Like it's, you know, top to bottom, this organization is really well run.You know, I think that Pat Murphy does a phenomenal job as well with day in, day out and getting this team ready to play. It's definitely a much different. You got to, like, the Pat Murphy thing, like has to send you up a wall, right?Like, every time I see Pat Murphy and his team's overperforming based off of expectations and probably what their rosters look like, I, I just think to myself, what happens.happened at Arizona State University where this was not translatable because the guy winseverywhere he goes, it seems.
04:22Yeah, it was tough. It's tough to tell. You know, because I think when he was at ASU, it was slightly before my time of watchingcollegiate baseball. You know, I've watched more recently and over the last few, you know, 10, 15 years. But it's definitely one of those, like, you always want to be proud of a former Sunnivel.and like a former son-double leader, you want them to do well anywhere they go,
04:48but at the same time, I'm like, man, why couldn't we just keep a guy like that in the fold? And or, like, you know, I love Tori LaValle. You know I love Tori more than anybody, but like Pat Murphy back in Arizona, like I'd be all for it at some point in time. You know, but you always wish for the best for guys like that,so it's easy to cheer for, especially against the Dodgers.
05:10And, you know, the brew crew is not the Ryan Bronze of the Pat.that used to be the bane of my existence. But, you know, they're a much easier team to cheer for, I would say.No doubt about it.You know, I think that we've made some comments on this show as well,me and Derek talking about how, like, the Brewers have been our former enemy. And that is the case.Like, you hold on to a little bit of disdain about 2011 and how that went down
05:34and, you know, feeling like you had a team that truly could make a run in the postseason. But you lose to a guy who has, you know, steroids sweating out of his gills.out there on the base paths and Ryan Brunney hits like 500 in that series and it's like almost thesole reason that you don't advance to the next round and that kind of thing sticks with you rightespecially when you're a franchise that is not consistently in the postseason like we rememberour postseason births vividly because I don't want to say they're few and far between butthey're certainly not in abundance right so every seven years yeah it's I guess that's that technicallyis the case, isn't it?
06:15Yeah, because it was what it was, it was, maybe it's every six years. What's the number? It was so it's 2007 and then four years later was 2011, but then it was 2017 and then2023.So it's every six years. So pencil us in for 2029, David.Man, please do not wish that upon me.If we don't make the playoffs until 2029, I have a feeling that this fan base is going
06:39to get pretty up in arms. And certainly there would be big changes in terms of.leadership of this organization, you would think, by that time. But, yeah, I mean, getting back on topic here with the MOB,like you can see the, that we have the bracket here, you know,as these two series, the ALCS, the NLCS are well underway. The Ray's Claw won back with Freddie Peralta pitching probably his best game as a Rayand beating the Guardians.
07:05And now that series is 1-1.And then the Brewers, like we said, have an opportunity to eliminate the Dodgers tonight.and it would definitely be something that I think the masses are looking forward to and want to see Jacob.I've seen some, you know, rumors, some things on Twitter that have maybe kind of described a,I want to say a take up in viewership with this NLCS.Like it's one of the, shoot, I left my guy off screen there. It's one of the most viewed playoff series in MLB history.Yeah, most watched LCS game one in 21 years because people are tired of the Dodgers.
07:53People are ready for this Dodgers downfall, I think. And we're witnessing it in real time, like the galvanization of all baseball fans across the world being like,we're kind of sick of these guys in the way that they've been operating.Yeah, because you know what's funny is when you flash that the, the, the, bracket up on the screen there, like my first reaction, and you're going to kill me when I saythis, but like, my first reaction was like, man, there's just nothing sexy about this bracketright now. Like, there's just nothing pretty about, about watching rays and guardians baseball.Like, it's gritty baseball. It's fun baseball. But, like, man, that is just a, like, there is not,
08:34you know, and I'm not a Dodgers guy. I'm not a Braves guy, but, like, could we, like, the socks gettingthrough would have been fun. But outside of that, man, there's just not a lot that's fun about this.Like, it's fun when you see the Diamondbacks in a bracket because you're like, man, that's cool. But like the rays are there almost every year, which is hilarious. The guardians are the same way.Like, you know, it feels like in the last decade or so, the guardians have been in this positioncountless number of times. And it's just, like, it's just that that's not pretty. Like, that'sjust not a fun like that's not a fun bracket so it's funny to like for you for you to say hey likethe viewership's up because i like i can't point to one thing that says like wow everybody's rallying
09:16behind this team because like correct me if i'm wrong here but when the snakes were in likepeople talked about it like it felt like there and maybe it was just because we were in arizonaand like the buzz was there but like it felt like the debacks kind of took the internet by storm andlike uh hey this devx team is super funAnd like the brewers are for better, for lack of better terms, like they're handing the Dodgers their ass right now.And like, I just don't see it anywhere.Like I'm like it's not just, it's not making the rounds other than just like people clowning the Dodgers. And it's just funny to watch because it's like, man, I wanted some fun.
09:52It's great that viewerships out for baseball. But like it just, are you going to watch a Brewers, Guardians World Series, Damon?I mean, I'll watch it certainly, but I host a D-BACs podcast, a major baseball podcast. So I guess I'm kind of the bad guy to ask. It's more about what the casual viewer wants. And I'll tell you what, Major League Baseball, they look at a Guardians raise ALCS,and they scream in horror at the things that that is done to the marketability and the viewership of that ALCS in particular.I think as long as the Dodgers are in a series,
10:31they'll be fine on viewership. And I actually, I disagree with you on the standpoint of the,I think the AL looks very, very vanilla and unsexy.I think the NL actually is, I mean, you got the Dodgers versus the best team all yeargoing up against each other in the NLCS.And then the other teams that have been in the playoffs that got eliminated. And I know that we are the one team that didn't make it that was pretty good out of this crop.but like it's you know the Phillies and Padres
11:02were playing some of the best baseballand across the league going into the seasonor the postseason I should saythe Cubs were really fun all yearthey have the MVP on their teamlike I think the Braves have a lot of star powerI think the NL playoffs was was pretty muchalmost a dream scenario
11:19from a major league baseball standpoint of likethey would rather have all those teams in over the DiamondbacksI'll tell you that for a factyeah I would agree with thatI just like as a fanLike, it's always fun when a team like, like, you know, give it a couple years and maybe the pirates sneak in or like, you know, like a, yeah, give me like.God, there's just so much. What about the raising the guardians?
11:46Maybe you're right.Maybe you're right. There's just not a bunch.Like, I'm looking at the National League standings right now.And it's like, do I really want to watch the Reds play baseball or, you know, like, schemes would be fun.Like getting skeins in the postseason would be fun.You know, it would be kind of funny if the Rockies eventually made the postseason in like 10 years or whatever because I would cheer for that more than likely.Yeah, no, I think from their viewership perspective, I give it.
12:14I think Major League Baseball would only, like in a dream scenario, would really only want the Mets in over one of those teams.Maybe the not that this could happen, but like the Mets over the Brewers or I guess it could, the Cubs could win the division. That might be the ideal scenario.but other than that, I feel like they got pretty much what they wanted. Now, if it's Brewers, Guardians, Brewers, Reyes, now that is a nightmare. And you know what? That's a nightmare for the people that maybe make money upstairs,
12:43but for the people on this fine podcast, that is a dream come true. And we'll be definitely rooting for that to happen tonightwhere the Brewers can hopefully eliminate the Dodgersand all of our greatest fears of a,the three-peat becoming inevitable. And, you know, I think that this is maybe added a little bit of, you know, maybe some ability for these teams.
13:12Like if teams like the Brewers can go out there and perform well and win in thepostseason, do you think that this could have any impact on an MLB lockdown, Jacob?I know that that's been kind of a discussion at hand for a lot of folks of, you know, this is, you know, this proves.essentially that the Dodgers, you know, can go out there and spend the way that they doand still are beatable, are in fact, you know, they do have chinks in their armor that can be,you know, tested. But I don't necessarily view that as the case.
13:43I think that we're still headed towards a inevitable collapse in lockdown that preventsmajor league baseball from starting up at least at the, you know, intended start date.Yeah, I know, I think we're toast.I think it's going to be fun.watch the Dodgers lose and it might shut up some of the critics because there are peoplethat are banging the table just exclusively based off of what the Dodgers did. But like, the avalanche has been started and it's not just the Dodgers, right? Almost every team has a guythat's making probably 40 to $60 million a year at the top end of their payroll. And I just don't
14:20see a world where the Bryce Harper's or the Aaron Judges or the Show Hey Otis look atyou know, an MLB proposal that says, hey, by the way, you're going to cap it like 25 mil a yearand think that that is something that they're going to sign willingly. You know, I just don't see that happening.I think that, you know, the disparity there is too high.I think the MLBs, if they're going to get anything signed, they're going to have to caveand they're going to have to come up pretty substantially on the upper end of that. You know, I think the guys at the bottom, as long as there's a salary floor, like your rookies or your
14:58you know like not a guy like brandon fought but like you know think of a guy like uh vargas like if yeahlike an elder bar bar bargis said like hey now you're making a minimum of five million a yearinstead of round point five yeah that's that's always been my argument on this show is that you knowi think major league baseball the players association i should say because that's certainlynot major league baseball those two are at odds but the mlbPA in my opinionand all player associations across all sports, NFL and NBA alike. They do too much in terms of trying to protect the salaries of the big dogs in the league.Like they overrepresent the superstar players.
15:43So the Bryce Harper's of the world, his money's protected.Their mega contracts are protected. And that's why they don't want a salary cap is because, you know, mega contracts will be capped. And you can't sign these 10-year, $700 million deals like a,Tawny did with the Dodgers, right?Like, that's not going to be a thing anymore. But at the same time...
16:02It's only making two mill, Damon.Sure, sure.At the same time, you know, I do think that, you know, this is a situation where the floor is supposed to kind of mitigate that gap a littlebit. And the guys who are in the bottom 50% of the player pool, they will make way more money in the process by adding a floorand a cap just because all of the salaries are going to find a little bit more of a happy medium,
16:33a little bit more of a middle ground. And I think that benefits the masses.I think that the only people you're protecting by not allowing a floor to be implemented in a capare those superstar, all-star type of players and those guys obviously have more power than your run-of-the-millaverage Joe that's spending a cup of coffee in the league. But that's not the, for me, that's not the.role of the MLPPA. It's not to cater to only All-Stars and All-Stars only. It's to ensure that theentirety of the Players Association is all being treated at the best possible level for all parties.
17:13And I feel like that that for me is adding both a floor and a cap in this space. Here's the argument, though, and this is what they're going to say. They're going to say,who pays for the salaries at the bottom? Where does the money stem from?you pay a guy big money because he's the reason that people come and watch. And if people don't come and watch, you don't have the money to pay the Il-DemaraMargus of the world. And so there's a reason they cater to these guys, at least in my opinion, like obviously, you know, do I think that there's a massive substantial difference between a guy that makes
17:47$25 to $30 million a year versus $60 million a year?I think that's a whole different conversation we could be having when it comes to this.is like, does it really impact your lifestyle to like go down from making 70 million a year to$30 million a year?Because like, I'll certainly, you know, I could, I'll step into your place.I'll take that money. But no, it's like they're going to say we're the reason that the eyeballs are on this game. We're the reason that the, you know, that the money is even there to begin with.
18:14So why are we going to cap for the benefit of the guy that might be cut in two months if he doesn'tplay well?Like, I think that that's their argument that they're going to make there. And, you know, unfortunately, I just don't think that there's anybody at this point in time that's in the top 10% of payrolls in baseball that's stepped up and said like, hey, you know what?Like, yeah, like, it's fine. We're going to be fine.Like, nobody said that.Everybody's like, no, I'm not signing, you know, something that says I can't make more than X amount of money.
18:42And so, like, for the viewer, I think it's phenomenal because I think it creates a bunch of parity.Like, you know, if you say that nobody can pay, you know, more than 25 million a year for a guy.like all of a sudden the debaaks are in contention for a guy like to Eric scubble like you know it's not like now you're talking I think that there's a lot more movement that happens but it's just hard to think that guys like that are just going to quickly adhere or agree at least in the context of you know let's get baseball done next year I think that they're going to say you know what we made $70 million last year I'm happy to sit out if it means that mycap is going to go from 25 to 35 or 40 or whatever it is that they feel is more fair in terms oflike a guy like Bryce Harper that's going to make at the top of the you know the money pool yeah noi you know i i certainly agree with with a lot of that sentiment and i feel like um you know when it comesto the the salary cap um it's not as if it's a uh it's it's it'sIt's not as if, you know, it's, you have to add in a max player salary to add in a cap.
19:59The NFL, for example, you know, they obviously have a much larger roster size than MLB.And they, you know, they don't have max contracts. So quarterbacks can make, you know, 50% of the cap if the guy's good enough, right? And that's what they, they agree upon from a price standpoint. But, yeah, I do think that that's probably the way that I would go.I probably wouldn't cap it at maxmax salaries just to kind of avoid the,you know, the, the,
20:28superstar players being like that's,and try to appease them a little bit more so.But you never know.I mean, this is this, this entire situation is just,I feel like going to get extremely messy. And, yeah,I definitely don't think that the Brewers beating the Dodgers is all
20:42of a sudden going to, you know, fix baseball and everybody is going to be,uh,sunshine and rainbows and happy.Like the Dodgers aren't,I've seen some stuff too.Like the Dodgers are going to try to,sell the
20:53the NLCS this year so thatthere's no lockouts and then they're going to gojust go beast mode againonce there's a new collective bargaining agreementin place. I don't feel that that's going tobe the case either. I thinkthat truthfully the Dodgerssaw the writing on the wall
21:10and saw thatthere was going to be all these loopholesclosed and said we're going tounload the clip then.Yeah. Sure. And try to winas many championships as we can win while we stillhave this stark advantage before they take it away because I do think that this was alwaysinevitable. But in response to your thing about, you know, what, what are you going to, like,
21:33what's going to get the, the superstars to, like, adhere to this? I don't know that reallyanything is truthfully. Like, I don't know that you're ever going to be able to truly getthrough to these guys and convince them because the, the answer to that, the truth to that, Jacob,is it's, it's not self-serving to them. It's, it serves majorlybaseball.Yeah.It serves the game. And it's,
21:55and it's about like, are,do you,are you guys prepared to make a sack,a slight sacrifice in the short term for the good of major leaguebaseball in the long term? And for their perspective, and I kind of understand it,
22:09these players would say,no,because I'm here to make my money now.And I don't care about people making more money later because majorlybaseball is uber popular all of a sudden, like it's the 90s again.Like,I care about.
22:22out my money right now in my personal bank account. So it's going to be hard to get those guys convinced. But the truth to the answer of why they should do it is that it's going to save the gameof Major League Baseball as we know it.And if you continue along this path, you lose interest.People don't care.No one wants to see, you know, be a fan of a team where every time they have a goodplayer, a superstar player, he's off the team in five years.
22:50And he plays for the Dodgers now. That's not a system that makes anyone happen. So I do think that it's like you're almost asking guys to not be self-centered and not be self-serving.And that's a tough, that's a tough ask in this. You're going to have to cater to their competitive edge.Like that's, you're going to have to sell them on the fact that like, hey, we're doing this so you can go win championships.Like you've made your money. You're going to make money.
23:18You're going to make $25 to $30 million year.Like you're going to make money.and that doesn't even include the endorsements that you sign with Nike, Adidas, you know, new balance, whatever you sign.Like, you're going to make money off of those deals as well, probably actually even close to the amount that you're making just to play the game. You know, if you're going to like Otani, in that case, you're probably actually making more off of endorsements. But it's, you're going to have to say like, hey, this is about winning baseball games. You're going to make good money.
23:48This is to make it so that you can go out there and you can compete every.single year. And for a franchise, like the debacks, who they're, you know, their highest payrollplayers, Corbyn Burns, I want to say at this point in time. Like, and his contracts, you know,it's, I think it's like 35 year, 35 or 40 a year, whatever it is. Like, you're looking at thisteam and you're saying like, hey, like, we're going to go compete every single year and we can payyou just as much as the Dodgers can. Like, that's what we're in it for. So, yeah, it's aninteresting situation. I think the problem is there is pressure on the other side on the MLB side that says like, hey, we're going to lose a bunch of revenue if we don't get this done.Slash Manfred, I think, looks at it and says like, this is my legacy. Right. He says, like, whatever happens next year is probably what defines my entire tenure as Major League Baseball Commissioner. And you can tell that he's like, you know, he's got all these other things that he's implemented.
24:47that he'd like you know i think the pitch clock probably saved baseball i think that certain thingsthat he's implemented to make the game faster more watchable honestly all in all i think manfred'sdone a pretty dang good job um over the course of his tenure as commissioner but i think he looks at thisand says like everything that i've done for the good of the game i could go lose all of these teamshundreds of millions of dollars next year if i don't sign something yeah like if i don't getsomething signed. And like he's already, that's why I think he's already throwing the carrot out of like,I will end my tenure by doing an expansion because he says, I think we're going to lose a couplehundred million dollars per team next year. And so let's go expand and get those expansion fees
25:34to basically make the money that we lost back. I love it. And so that's, you know, I think that'swhy he's dangling that carrot. You know, I think there's a whole rabbit hole that you could go down here oflike, you know, I think a lot of these people don't expect to play baseball next year. And maybe that's not actually the case, but from the outside looking in, you know, and trying to read the room. And you and I have been in a lot of those rooms before of like you hear things from one side or another side. And it's just like eventually something's got a cave. And I think that they're just not going to come close to an agreement this offseason.
26:10And it's, you know, I think we're missing some baseball next year.I, you know, I think that the Brewers beating the Dodgers is a great storyline.I think it puts Shohei Otani in his place, which his place should probably be, you know.Prison.I wasn't going to go there, but, you know, you can go there if you'd like.A jail cell, Jacob. But yeah, I mean, it's definitely, you know, his place is certainly not playing in the World Series because taking two million years so that your team can go spend another $400 million.is just a non-competitive move.
26:46It's just anti-competitive, if you ask me.Certainly is.And, you know, if you're gambling on the sport, I think it makes it all that much more bad of a situation. But, Jacob, we do have a bit of breaking news.Saw that.Saw that.Yeah.That there is a new play-by-play voice for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
27:07And it will make fans happy for the most part, I believe. So we will get into that. That, that breaking news on the other side of our first break here on the PHNXD Back show.So please stick around, leave a like on this one, and do not go anywhere. We'll be right back.Let me tell you guys about our friends over at Sanderson Ford, where it is the Branktober sales event from now until the end of October, guys. That's right.Bronctober is here.

30:40that it was going to be, Chris Gersiola will be taking overfrom radio broadcast over to the television play-by-play.Jacob, your first thoughts on this decision being made official by the Arizona Diamondbacks?I love it.You know, I think that Bert's been around for a lot of time, you know, a lot of, a long time in the eyes of D. Bex fans.I think it was a hard spot for Bert to fill. You know, he came in right at the end of the run of Sutton Gracie.I'm sure you can remember being a kid, Damon, and watching Sutton Gracie talk about Snake's games.
31:18and I think it was just a really hard duo to come in and replace.Like that, you know, those people, they were beloved.Like, it just was a hard, like, saw it was great.Gracie was hilarious.Like, it was just a really, really good setup for a long time. And so it was, you know, I think that Bert did a really good job.My issue was that it wasn't a homer, obviously.Like, you know, for a local broadcast, you were bringing.
31:48and a guy that wasn't particularly involved with the organization at a substantial level. He was coming in from a national news outlet. He did a really good job.You know, he was polished. He was clean.I just think, like all good things, sometimes towards the end, they can taper off.And I think that over the last couple years, his calls got a little stagnant. And it just was, you know, it was, it got to the point where it was like, okay, I think we're ready for a fresh voice in the booth here.
32:17And I think by the end of the run on the MLB TV set up,and this is nothing against the team that they had in place, like I think Bert did a really good job for his whole tenure. He wouldn't have been there for, you know, 10 plus yearsif he wasn't at least very good at his job.I think a lot of people had actually turned on Garzola on the radiowhen they were watching on TV.I think, you know, how MLBTV gives you the opportunity
32:45to select which audio feed that you're listening to,And I think a lot of people had actually turned on Garajola there. And I think that he does a phenomenal job.I think that his excitement about this baseball team is more ingrained and in the line of what you want to hear in a local broadcast. He's extremely knowledgeable. But he also just has that twist of fun. There's a fun element to it.And like, for better or for worse, I think these leagues are in a spot where they can't continue to carry.
33:17to the 65 to 70-year-old people that are watching on their couch anymore. It's just not the direction you want to go.And so I think that Chris Gerejol is going to bring in a life that, you know,a 30-year-old or a 35-year-old guy or gal is going to want to sit there and listen to for two,two and a half to three hours every single night.Like I think that that energy is there. He's got the enthusiasm for this team. You can tell when you listen to him that he truly does love.
33:47watching Corbyn Carroll play baseball every single night. And like for my broadcaster, I need that, right?Like I want my broadcaster to really sit and be like, hey, like, I love this team.I love these guys.I want to watch them play every single day.And so I think that he was a shoe in here.Like I think that this is the perfect choice. You know, as somebody in the, I think Katie said, I love his chemistry with Bob too here.
34:15you know, I'm actually curious to see what they do with Bob at this point.Like, I'm curious if they'll just fully change the broadcast feel. You know, I'm not opposed to listening to Bob Brenley again.I think he does a good job.You know, he's very knowledgeable about the game.I wouldn't mind a fresh perspective in there either with Chris.Give him a blank slate to, you know, to kind of give an idea.If he wants him on the broadcast or if you would like to work with somebody else in that regard, you know,
34:44I think that this actually probably makes room for Mike Farron to come in on the radio side and do the radio broadcasts. And I think that that between Garajola and Farron, I think that the Debex broadcasters would be in really, really good hands at that point. But yeah, curious to see where they go with the rest of the booth there.Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to maybe see Josh Colemanter potentially be someone that could be involved there if they're trying to make the booth maybe a little bit more of a young, you know, push.or they want to go.Tuffy goes which.Yeah.Yeah.
35:17Tuffy goes which, yeah.Yeah, for sure.Tuffy's pretty good as well. You know, I do think that if Steve is out the door, I find it that they'll probably let Bobright off into the sunset as well. This is a guy that takes a lot of away trips off anyways. And I think that you could tell that it's getting a little bit more strenuous on him,the schedule of it of everything.
35:41I'm sure he'll be in and around the organization forever.but yeah, I would imagine that they'll probably wean him off of the out of the booth as well. But I agree with you completely, Jacob.I think, you know, Steve did a good job.He was not while he was not maybe my favorite play-by-play guy in the league, you know,he is a very professional, like, you know, polished play-by-play guy was on SportsCenter,as Derek talks about a lot.And like, you know, he was a name when he got brought over.
36:10I do think that his biggest con, his biggest flaw, was the lack of connection with the fan base.It really didn't feel like there was much of a relationship therebetween Steve and DeBak's fans. And I do think that part of that is his play calling style of,you know, almost like it felt very, and you know, it's almost fun a little bit to have it to complain about, like at least from my perspective,
36:38that's the type of guy I am.But like when Steve does like the whole like, and this guy hasn't his,a home run in three months when he's walking up to the plate and then he hits a home run and you'relike, could have seen that one coming. You're sitting there and you're like, are you? And then he'llbe like, go figure, huh? Like that's like, that's a big Steve is I'm like, uh, go figure, huh? Yeah. What do you? Oh, yeah, this is funny to you? Like, you're the one that's begging for it to happen. And then it happens and you're like, talk about coincidence. You know, and I felt like it was that kind of
37:13stuff that like almost rubbed us the wrong way but at the end of the day like i said that that kindof thing is fun to kind of complain about and have as like a a thing to like be mad at yourbroadcaster for but i do think that chris brings that connection completely and that's that's hisbiggest pro here in comparison to steve is that he is a debax fan he is one of us he grew up aroundthis organization it's all he's ever known his dad was the former gm when the team won the worldseries and like it means everything and so you you feel that you sense that when corbin carroll likeyou said puts a ball over the fence you can you can hear the like excitement in in chris grosiola'svoice that he gets fired up because he loves this baseball team and i think that that is maybe
38:01kind of the the new wave of sports media i mean hello we do this right here right where wein a way like we try to be professional i know it's rich coming from mespecifically, but like we try to be professional and cover the team with with respect and dignity, but we're also fans and we don't hide that.We root for the Diamondbacks. We want to see the Diamondbacks succeed and win games. And I do think that like while maybe the old school, the old wave was get a guy who's veryremoved and is going to give you as, you know, unbiased of a take as possible.
38:39And that was kind of the Steve Berthew model and method.I do think that maybe the new wave method of let's get someone who cares about the team as much as we do in the booth there. And I think that that's going to be a welcome change for Diamondbacks fans.So it's great news for Chris and it's exciting stuff. Can I just from my distribution lens here in my new role, obviously.Of course.Yeah.I like to look at things.
39:07Because a lot of what I do for those people that don't actually know what I moved over to do isI run our linear channels for All-City.And like a lot of my job is figuring out how to get people tuned into our content at, you know, 24 hours a day. When are people watching? How are they watching? What do they want to watch? You know, that's because like what I do is very different than YouTube. You know, in all of our markets, you guys are running YouTube pages extremely well.
39:33You know, it's on-demand viewing.People want to watch us.They're going to watch us because they're going to search us or they're going to, you know, their algorithm is going to serve that content up.and a lot of what I do is like from an average viewer perspective that kind of surfs through channelsand looks at things in a different lens, like how do I get somebody to engage in our content? And like if you're on paper looking at the two guys, right, you're looking at Stephen, you're looking at Chris over here and you say like which one is going to move the needle forsomebody that flips onto the channel and or like somebody that tunes in for two minutes,
40:07like how are you going to capture their attention? And I think that Chris is going to do a phenomenal job of that because you can feel it when he call when he's calling something.Even in the slow moments in a game, you can see how invested in this product he actually is.And that in and of itself should lend itself to to bringing in more eyeballs. And all of these teams that are wading through, you know, I talk about this a lot because I'm, you know, I'm talking to these platforms and like half the time.you know, the conversation comes up about RSNs and it's like, hey, no, we don't, we do something very different than an RSM, right? We're shoulder programming, we're coverage. We're, you know, like, but what they, what the RSNs are doing and what these teams are doing, like they're chasing eyeballs right now.Because the RSN model collapsed. It has for all the RISNs that haven't collapsed at this point, which I don't think there's any of them still remaining.
41:03Like maybe yes network and MSN network, MSG networks in New York or like,And like obviously in LA, you've got, you know, Time Warner and that whole deal that's going on.But like outside of that, almost everybody's out of.If that's what I call it, Jacob.I call it a criminal enterprise, but you call it a TV deal.Yeah, yeah. But it's, you know, I think that these people are searching, right? You've got the Marlins, the Debacks, the Reds, the Brewers, like all of these teams are searching for how do we replicate the most eyeballs,
41:38possible on our stuff. And so I think a move like this is exactly what they're looking for.I think this is this says like, hey, now we know if people find us that we have the rightperson in the seat that gets the most airtime, you know, it's like somebody tunes in.They're going to hear Chris Garjola at some point in time within, you know, if you can getsomebody to tune in for an average watch time of like six to ten minutes or whatever it is.I mean, a baseball game, you're hoping that people are tuned in for probably over an hour or an average watch time. You're probably looking at like 50 minutes to an hour.
42:14But they want somebody that's going to be like, hey, you turn on this channel for three minutes. And now you're in.Like, you've heard Chris speak. If you're a D-BACs fan, you're bought in when you hear Chris speak about the D-Backs.Like, you're all in on these broadcasts. And so I think this is the right move for them, not even just from like I'm a fan perspective, but just from like,a casual viewer. How do we get people in the door here? I think this is the type of person you need in that seat.Well, there it is. That's your breaking news for today in D-Backsland. And you know we got you
42:49cover on the PHNX debacks show. Let's hit our second ad break. We'll be right back after this. And we'retalking about some potential targets that Mike Hazen could have in the off season when it comes toleft-handed hitters as he told Steve Gilbert of MLB.com that that is going to be the main focus from anoffensive perspective. 46:14We're back here on the PHNX D-BAC show. And of course, you know, there's, you know, been a lot of talk over the offseasonor as we get into the Diamondbacks off season at least about what direction the D-Backshould truly be going in when it comes to free agency. And, you know, I do believe that we've been kind of,you know, on the radar of just saying that, you know, this is a team that obviously needs afirst baseman, obviously needs power hitters, obviously needs a DH situation to kind of helpthis team and, you know, just bring a power spark that they did not have last season with
46:52Nolan Aronado being the team's leader in home runs last year with, I believe, 30 on the dot,if I'm not mistaken, Jacob. So, you know, not exactly. Yeah, he was fantastic. But he was fantastic. Butyou want that to be probably more like your what your third most home runs on your team probably not first30 30 I mean like for sure not first but like I would take if you told me my second guy on the team had 30 home runs I would take that yeah yeah no I I think that's fair as well um but I you know I this it definitely isn't enough for your your team leader and uh and so you're gonna have to find someone to kind of help change that right hopefully I think you know theThe hope at least is that Catelle and Corby will have better seasons next yearwhere they put the ball over the fence a little bit more themselves. And maybe Gabby can maybe put the ball over the fence a little bit more.He hit with a lot of power and average this year,
47:51but not really a home run guy at this point of his career still. But it seemed like kind of in that latter portion of the season,he started to find something a little bit more. But Mike Hazen did have this to say to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com,but it was a great job covering the Diamondbacks. He said the offseason priorities from an addition standpointare certainly going to be a little bit more left-handed.We struggled versus right-handed pitching this year.
48:16So that's a clear and obvious one.I think DH first base is a clear area of need.Timmy did an unbelievable job down the stretchafter going down to AAA making some adjustments.Pavin Smith was good when he came back for the last week to two weeks.Vargy did a lot of really good things for us this year.I think that's a clear area no matter what that we need to improve upon.Jacob, you hear that quote.
48:39What's going through your mind there? You can't do it again, Damon. Can't do what?I don't even know what you're talking about. No, you're not being very specific.I just, how many times, Damon and how many times can you quote it for me?What's the quote? He says, page and no, no, no, no, no, no.
49:00What's Tori's quote? What's Tori's quote?Flushing.Pavan can hit.We know he can hit.Oh, yeah, we know he can hit.Yeah, he does love a good we know he can hit.Yeah, Pavan can hit.
49:12We know he can hit.And I just, nope, I love, look, I don't like bagging on guys.Like, it's just not what I like to do.But man, I've done eight years of Pave and Smith's experience at this point. And I can definitively say Pave and Smith can hit for a week at a time. And he can't hit for three months at a time.and unfortunately in this day and age he also kind of pulls a boat anchor when he runsand i just like you got to have speed and he just doesn't and so uh like i don't know man
49:46i you know i wanted to believe like anytime he does this where he goes for a week or twoweeks where he starts to hit it's like hey man is this the guy that we picked seventh overalllike is that him is he coming out are we going to see him like is he is he starting to figureit out because like all you heard about coming out of college is like dude never strikes outhe takes a ton of walks he has a great eye and like he does have a really good eye like if you watchhim take plate appearances like you know he has some pretty abysmal ones as well but like you knowhe takes a decent amount of pitches and like you know his eyes not bad like you know but it justi think if you've given a guy seven to eight years at this point it's probably time it's probably
50:28just time to say like, you know what? You've had your moments. You looked really good at times. You want us a few games.A few games that I can think of off the top of my head that's like, hey, like in Miami whenhe hit two homers in that game.Like we won that game because he had like, I get it.And there are drops in the pan where you're like, man, that's payment Smith.
50:47Like that's payment Smith we've been waiting for.But for too many long periods of time, he does not impact the baseball at a consistentlevel. He's a black hole for the better part of 75% of every season. And it's just like, it's not that he's striking out.You can't have that big fifth in your lineup at the first base spot and have a goodoffense. It's not a thing that is really possible to happen. You need to have productionout of your first baseman or else your team is going to lack firepower. And even though, you know, as he mentions there, and I disagree with him more so, I mean, I guess,
51:28his sample size was very short. One to two weeks of the last one to two weeks of the season,he said Pavin was good. But, you know, if you're,I think Tim Tawa and Ildemarovarovarvigas were objectively good this season.I liked what I saw both those guys. But I can't have those guys being your starting first baseman. No, that's my bench guys.
51:46You lack firepower when that's the case. Both of those guys should be on the team next year as your primary two utility players, maybe along with the Tommy Troy as well, where you feel comfortable putting them in the outfield, the infield, playing them, starting them if you need to with injuries and whatnot. But going into the season, the on paper best lineup for the team needs to have a new firstbasement etched in in the middle of the order for this franchise. And it can't be just the same old, same old of we're going to trust in Paving and hope that
52:17we find a couple peripheral guys that can, you know, make up the ground in the meantime.Like that that's not good enough for me anymore. And I feel like Mike Hazen, like he's trying not to come out.and specifically be like, this is all we care aboutbecause that would completely take awayall of his leverage. But if he's coming out and immediately saying,
52:37yeah,we're going to focus on lefties a little bit.You know that the focus is on lefties a big bit. It's not just a little bit.Yeah.Well, you know,Hayeson,he doesn't like to play his deck of cards
52:48so that he doesn't get,you know, like teams are like,oh,I know what you need.So now I'm going to withhold it.Like he doesn't want to give outhis full deck of cards,
52:56obviously.But I'm taking a peek at the top 30 prospect list. And there is just, for the first base spot, there is just not,um, there's just not a whole lot.For our organization?Yeah, there's not a whole lot that excites me here.Well, the debacks are, I mean, listen, we don't draft anything well except for secondbaseman and outfielders.
53:19And everybody knows that.We don't draft pitchers well.We don't draft any power hitting positions well.We might. You could maybe throw catcher into the.that mix based off of how some of these these young catchers maybe keep performing in the minorsbut you know when it comes to the power hitting positions and and pitchers no one does itworse than the diamond backs no it's yeah because i'm looking i'm looking at this list right now and
53:43like we're really deep at shortstop and second base because apparently we're just a lead at shortstopand second base i got right middle infill and outfield i mean yeah you've got like even in the top10, you've got Dermitio Ocasantes, second baseman,Casey Cunningham, shortstop,Carson, shortstop, Jody Dix, second baseman,Johnson Luis, shortstop. I mean, like, that's all in the top 10.And then it's just a slew of pitchers and a couplecatchers that are in the top five.
54:11Yeah.As Mighty Schumann says, though, Manuel Pena is, I think, underrated on these prospect lists and had himself an unbelievable season. And he could potentially be a third base, first baseman, maybe corner infield their type that they could do something for this franchise. But that's probably the one guy I look at right now that I think has maybe the juice that could potentially be needed to man that spot for a while. He hit.Well, he did.I mean, like, it's just so hard with guys to be like, what does Amarillo and Reno really mean to you?
54:48Yeah.You know, like from a hitter perspective, it's so hard to judge people. They are good. But like, I'm all for giving a guy a shot.Like, that's not my issue. But, like, you know, a guy that's, if you're looking at his page, he's 6 foot 170.So the frame is not necessarily, like, conducive to supporting a nearly 515 slugging percentage in the big leagues.if you're six foot 170.
55:19You know what I mean? He's like, yeah, yes,he's listed at six foot 170.I feel like maybe he's a little bit thicker than that these days.Just eyeball in it.But I could be wrong there.
55:33He looks to me like he's more filled out than 170.Like I have this picture here that I might try to throw up on screen if I can where he,and he looks pretty thick in this photo. And this is from like spring training. But, uh, yeah, I'll continue, Jacob.I think, you know, Manuel Pena is probably the one guy, but you're right.Like he's not like a typical first baseman type, you know, he's, he's someone that you'realmost trying to find it a spot for over there because maybe his spot is taken at his
56:08typical natural position already on this roster. So I don't, I don't, I don't know exactly how to.how to take that. But if you were to look at this photo here, Jacob, and I'm throwing it on screen now, that looks bigger than 170, right? But look at the one I just sent you from his sod poodles uniform. And like, that's a different, like, like this,
56:31the sod poodles one would have been taken midseason, right?Um, I'm looking now.Yeah, yeah, that was at a certain point that that was during the season, yeah. But I think that that's bigger than 170 personally.I mean, I'm, I'm, I'm not too far off from 170.myself. I've been 170 at times in my life for sure, not at this exact moment, but I wouldn'tsay that, I don't know, he looks, he looks like bigger than a typical 170 pounder. I feel likemaybe those weight and measurements were taken when he was, you know, maybe first brought over the
57:07organization, but I don't know. Did you think when you brought me on today that we would be reallygetting into the nitty gritty of how much manual pain, um, pain a ways? Like, I mean, it's a, it's a, it's arap shoot with me sometimes of the routes that we can go down when it comes to the minor leagues. But like, look, I'm all for giving a guy a shot. But like at the end of the day, if we're going to go compete, that leash is going to beprobably too short for like what you would want to give a guy.Yeah.I agree.
57:37Yeah.You have to be undeniable. If you're a guy like Manuel O'Pena joining a team like the Arizona Diamondbacks, it has tobe like a Christian Walker.situation almost, where you're not exactly the plan, but you became the plan because youforced your way into the future long-term plan of the organization. No one thought Christian Walker was going to be the first basement of the future becauseno one thought Christian Walker was an MLB player for 10 years.
58:07But he proved everybody wrong and, you know, has built himself off of that.So I think that that's kind of the play here when you look at in-house.options. They should go obviously out of house, but if you're going to look at guys that are in-house,that is the hope is that someone just kind of takes the reins and doesn't let go of that position.Even Jose Fernandez could maybe be thrown into that conversation a little bit.You know, Mighty Schumann puts Tyler Locklear in the conversation organizationally. So there are a few in-house options, but not very good ones for my money. So here's
58:46I'm going to throw this to the wolves question.Does Kattelshift to first to give Krasantes a shot at second? That would be my long-term plan. That or D-8 for Ketan.Yeah, I should say personally, that is how I would treat Ketel at this point.Like, I think Ketel likes to play second base,
59:08and I think he's a good second baseman. But like, we've got a lot of youth at that position. And like with the way that everything, went last year, you know, could you get into shift to a D.H spot or a first base spotthat would open up a position for Cresontes? Because for better, for worse, the young guys that aregoing to get run next year are Waldy, Troy, Groover, Groover, Loller. And I don't know, I wouldn't even, here's my problem. It's like I wouldn't even consider Loller one of the young guys anymore.Like he's still the same age as Wally. He's played like half a season of Major League Baseball still
59:41somewhere. Right. Yeah, but he's been around since the World Series here and next year. That's going on four years, Damon. That's going on four years. And he still played half a season ofMajor League Baseball. I know. And so it's like, like those are the guys that are going to get run. And theonly person in the minors that I could see getting a look outside of that is probablyChrisantes. And like from the pitching side of things, nobody at this point, Brat and Cole. You know, like you're not going to get and and I think they might have even moved Cole off of the listhere of top 30 which is crazy but yeah Mitch Brown will get a look and Hagenet I think is probablytwo years out would be my guess. Yeah. Yeah and he looks to be a guy but it looks like a little
01:00:30bit more down the road. We're going to look at some of these top free agent options but we gotone more ad break to hit here on the PHNXD back show so please do not go anywhere. 01:04:01We are back here on the PHNX D-BAC show with my guide,Jacob Franklin making his long-weighted debut probably hasn't been on the show since last time Derek Monta was out of office and I had to take it.I don't know what it is. Derek just really doesn't like me.He doesn't want you on the show. He's told me specifically I want nothing to do with Jacob after he left us and turned his back on us.I didn't turn my back on you. That's not how Derek sees it.Conversations are active, but I guess I can specifically leave off page and XD back.
01:04:33if Derek really wants to play those cards.Okay, Derek actually didn't say that. Please don't do that because that's going to hurt my bottom line as well. But, yeah, Jacob, we do have a list of some of the top free agent,left-handed hitters that the Diamondbacks could target this offseason. And we can real quick kind of just roll through them. And we can, you know, kind of discuss if any of these guys are intriguing that you feelcould be big-time options that this franchise could use as an upgrade by way of maybe a
01:05:03or a first baseman. We can start at the top and kind of roll down. And if you,if there's anybody here that you like in particular, you can go ahead and call it out, Jacob. But we got Brandon Lowe at second base,Louisa Rice, who's played both second and first base.
01:05:19And let me tell you,Jacob,I know that you're not the biggest rise guy in the world, but he actually graded out really well defensivelyat the second base position this year, which is pretty shocking. You have Jake Bowers, who, you know,
01:05:32Derek and I were talking about on Yves.yesterday's D-back show, and then he goes on to have a 12 pitch AB where he puts the ball overthe fence and probably ends the Dodgers season in the process.I think we can go ahead and maybe scratch Jake Bowers off the list of potential options afterthat one.Jock Peterson is a D.H. option bringing him back.I could see that being a distinct possibility.Michael Conforto, Dalton Varsho, old friend here at Center Field, Trent Grisham, Nathaniel
01:06:02Lowe is an option, a guy they try to.to trade for it at the deadline. You know, you got old friend Josh Rojas. You have Max.Yeah, let's just take off anybody at the bottom of that list because there's a lot of,there's a lot of ugly at the bottom of that list right now.Big Josh Rojas fan.Any of these guys, Jacob, they suit your fancy?
01:06:24Yeah, I mean, like Nathaniel Lowe stands out there because we've got a hole at first base. And, you know, obviously we could take a shot on a guy, but I still think we're in a verycompetitive window right now.I think that we're going to be better than we were last year. And we were, you know, ironically, we still won 85 games or was it 86?I don't even know off the top of my, I think it was 86.86, yeah. And, you know, like, I think that the crazy thing is we're probably better next year than we were this year.
01:06:51With a three-headed monster in the bullpen, like, I think the focus on getting some bats in here that are going to come in and make an impact are big.You know, so that's why Nathaniel Lowe probably jumping.jumped out to me at first base there. You know, I'm not opposed to, gosh, I know you're in a rise guy.I just, I don't know if I could do it.Like, it's just, it's just not, it's not appealing to me.It's not aesthetically pleasing baseball. No, it's not pretty baseball.
01:07:27It's like, it's just so ugly.I actually, I disagree.I actually wish that there were more guys like Luis Arise in the game.Like guys that valued getting a single because they know that they can do it out of 320 clip over hitting 240 and striking out a million times all year because they're just trying to hit home runs.I'm not saying that I think that there's a few guys that that is conducive to helping your team win baseball games. And I feel like maybe a rise at different parts of his career has struggled.but last year was very good by all accounts. His OPS is higher than I thought.
01:08:07Yeah, he was good last year.Yeah, his OPS is higher than I.I mean, in Philly, he played 46 games and OPS of 680 and hit 280.Like, there's a lot of singles there, Damon.Like, that is a lot of singles.I mean, he had, what was it?He had 49 hits, 10 doubles and two homers. So he had, what, 37 singles?
01:08:29It's awesome.Oh, I don't know if I would.I would consider that awesome.I would have taken the 37 singles down the stretch last season. Here's the point I'm trying to make, Damon. You sat here and talked to me about how 30 homers couldn't be the top of your, like you said, that needs to be your third or fourth highest total. And then you're sitting here telling me that you want to bring in Louisa Rice who's going to hit five at most.
01:08:54I'll take, I'll take Luis Arise and his five home runs over Pavin Smith and his 15 home runs with the worst.baseball you've ever seen for three quarters of the year, you know?Like, I just think that this guy at the minimum, he's a floor raiser, Luisarize. He brings to the table something. Is he?Is he a floor? Is he a floor razor?I think so.
01:09:19In his career, let's take a look at this. You know what you're getting out of him. He's played with the twins. He's played with the Padres, the Giants, in the Phillies.and go ahead and tell me what the furthest he's made in the playoffs. That is so, so you think Louisa Rise, the second baseman, has that much impact on a winning baseball team.Like, Jacob, that's an unfair.
01:09:43No, no, no, no, no, no.I'm not saying that he's the reason they lost.I'm saying if you're telling me he's a floor razor, what's their record without him on those teams? They might be the worst team in MLB history. We don't know what that looks like. The Padres and the Phillies have made the playoffs multiple times without it.I'm speaking in the context of the diamond.
01:10:01I think he's a floor raiser for this team.Based off of what we currently have at first base,I think that he raises the floor for the offensive productionat the first base position in a large way.He said he doesn't run on first base, though. He said I'm not leaving second base.If he was to sign with us,the hypothetical would be that he's going to first base.
01:10:23Otherwise, he's not going to be here. Now we're just throwing qualifiers out there, Damon. But that seems like a fair, that seems like a fair, qualifier. If he plays here, he's not going to take Catele Marte's spot at second base. But he's, but like, didn't he not outwardly say last year? Like I'm not, yeah, he said I'm not goingsomewhere that wants me to play first base. He, I think that that is his preference, but at the endof the day, money talks. And if the dimebacks offer him, the best contract offer, that probably
01:10:51is something that changes as a conversation for him. Here's, so if they do end up signing himthis offseason, which I think is a moot point, because I think we're really talking about 2028 here. You have me back on this show and I'll raise my hand and I'll say I've never once said a badthing about Louisa Rice.I think he's a floor raiser.I think that he's a I think he's great for this team.I think that he is probably the best thing since sliced bread and I'll take all the singles
01:11:27that I can get, Damon.I just want, you know, he's going to be like that. He's going to be the you get a single, you get a single, you get a single. And then, you know, they're going to not hit any homers behind him because we could havehad a guy like Vinny Pascuettino. And you said, I want Luis Arise and his singles to come to my baseball team.Mighty Schuven says here, the single is only useful if it scores a runner allows the hitterto then steal a base and a rise is not so quick.
01:11:58My counter to that would be how many runners.in scoring position, atrocities, did we witness this year?Like, atrocities. You don't, you don't wish that there was a guywho could poke a singleinto the outfield grassand score a couple of those runs?
01:12:14We would have made the freaking playoffs. If we could have had a guy,a couple guys hit a singlewith runners in scoring position.I don't know if I've seen.We don't know if I've seen, and we could not get them in.It was a huge problem.
01:12:27I don't know if I have seen the most, this might be the most, bizarre baseball savant page that I've ever seen out of louisa rise yeah i said i just sent it to youin slack it's pretty a bit it's like it is about the most obscure it's awesome yeah i mean he's likehundreds percentile in five things and first percentile in like four of them yeah he's it's it'sit's very jerry-esque it's very perdomo ask but like here's like jerry's is likeJerry's is like low percent oh well at the bottom holy smokes juries is super funny too oh that's so goodyeah this is great yeah we could go down we could go down a rabbit hole here of baseball savon pages but
01:13:14yeah that is that is the most i think ugly like i get it like you know gilbert says whatwhatever happened to setting the table and i get it like throw them at the top of your orderget them on base that's cool who on our lineup can get them in becausebecause apparently nobody could do that last year, David. And so I'd rather go out and get a guy that I know is going to start driving people in.And that's not Luis Arais. It's not what he does.I just think that he's like,
01:13:41I just,I think that he brings something to the table that this team needs a little bit more of.And I'm not going to say that every team needs a little,a Luis Araze type, but I'm not all the way out on the guy just because he's a singles hitter.I think that last year,if we had a Luisarize,we make playoffs.
01:14:00That's the difference.I can go that far.You don't think we win two more games with Louisa Rice at first base next last season than if we.No, we needed people to drive runs in.He would have driven more runs in than Pavin Smith?Like, that's not the position he was put in.He was in like, who's to say that he would have done the same thing he did in that position?Like, I just, I don't know.
01:14:25Like, I need, like, if you can hand-select one guy in baseball that's like not a Bobby Witt or not.I mean, like, I'm talking about a guy that you can, like, pluck in that it's like a feasible, like one guy to come in and play baseball on my team that I know is going to come contributeto winning baseball. It's just, I don't know if it's, I don't know if I'm going to stay.I mean, I'm not taking Luis a rise in that hypothetical either. That's nuts. But I do think that he's like a 80, if we're doing like a Madden scale or like an MLB
01:14:55the show scale, he's like an 80 rated player. And we could use a couple more 80 rated players.on our team because I don't think,I think we're out there starting a lot of,a lot of 73s,a lot of 74s that are not really getting the job done. And I think that, you know, there's a place for a guy who, maybe he's not a big ceiling type of razor,
01:15:19but I do, I'm going to stand by.I think he's a floor, floor raising type of player.Would this be the 26 or the 27 free agency period?27, I believe.226, 26, free agents by position.I'm going to list off all the guys I'd rather have other than Louisa Rice.I mean, honestly, give me jazz.
01:15:43I'll take jazz.I'll take I'll take Glaber.I'll take Ozzy Albies.Heck, yeah, I'll take Ozzy Albies. What did Glabry do last year? That one I think we could maybe like, I mean, I'm with you on the other two, but I'm not exactly certain.I mean, he's more than a half.Eight bombs, 38 RBI?
01:16:05Like?260.Yeah.I mean, like, you know, there's more production.Who else?Who else do we have that's going to be a free agent that I would mean like, oh, wow. What? There's no way that this is real because I thought he was bad this year.
01:16:24Gina's war was still four.He had 30 bombs.Man, Gina's just never going to die.Hey, but hey, we can not, we should not use our, uh,our last roster spot to pick him up when this team needs a DH badly at the end of the yearbecause it would cost $3 million against the cap.I mean, you threw out a name before. Here's what I'm going to throw out at you.
01:16:48You threw out a name before we went live and I know that we've gone really long.Sorry, Damon. No, you're good.I'm having fun.For your DH spot, do you want Randy or Rosarena?I mean, I would, I think he's a good outfit.outfielder, is he not?I don't know.
01:17:09I mean, like, I, I, I'm thinking purely hitting here.I'll look up his baseball spot.I would certainly be interested and then see if, if you could maybe trade one of youryounger outfielder's for first baseman or something, you know, trade a fielding valuewas negative seven. So, yeah, let's throw him at the age.Yeah.No, that wouldn't be a bad.
01:17:31That wouldn't be a bad move. The only problem is he's a righty, which doesn't exactly help your right-handed hitting, hitting against right-handed pitcher situation. But, you know, I'm interested in adding good baseball players to this team thisoffseason because I think this team needs like one, two guys to add to its startinglineup until it's, it looks pretty damn good on paper. But it really is about who you're going to bring in there and who's going to bethose type of players.
01:17:58Yeah, it's, yeah. And like, look, I get it.A rise hits the baseball.Like, you want a guy that's going to come hit.the baseball but I think for this team's needslike you watched it last year they couldn't get guys inand I just don't think that that's the position likeI just you want a guy that's going to clear the bases
01:18:17right like youI think you lost did I lose youI think my wife I just cut you're thereI lost you for a second but I think you'reback now we may have lostJacob Franklin butI can see him on screenand uh
01:18:40that's funnyI'm back. I'm fully back. I completely just cut entirely. So my apologies there for the awkward transition. But I just think you want a guy like, I know you're talking about lefties, but like, you know, even I mentioned Vinnie Pespatino. You know, he hit 250, but he drove in 63 runs and hit 17 bumps. Like I want, like that's the type of floor razor.Like I don't need a guy to come hit 310. I need a guy that I know is going to give me some big hits in games that are going to drive in baseball players.I know like I know you guysgonna put runs on the boardlike if you're asking me if I want
01:19:14Pasquantino or Arise I'm gonna take Pasquantinobut I'm I guess my pushbackis that I just would want nothing to do with Arisebecause I think he's a valuable baseball playerthat maybe gets undervalued bypeople that are a little bit toolocked in on slugging percentagea little bit too locked in on
01:19:33sure and I don't mean slugactually pretty solid if we're beingcompletely honest with ourselvesbut he's to me like yeah he doesn't walk enough yes he's not fast those are big deterrencefor a guy that is a singles dominant player but he jumps in and he's i think i think a guythat does whatever it takes to get a hit is kind of snakes ball personally but i thinktory would love that myself but maybe not hazen but i do think that that's a tory type of guyand i think that it's tough i think that he's the
01:20:09I don't knowfifth best hitterwalking into this franchiselikeit's it's nothe's like comfortably like in thatgood mixGabby
01:20:21CorbinJerry Jerryand I knowI'll say Nolan was betterfor sure betterNolan hit 30 bombsand drivenyeah so I said
01:20:32so maybe sixthbut like that's a guythat's going to help you winyeah I just thinkthere are too many other holes to fill is more of the point I'm trying to make like like I get itbut like to bring a guy like that and I just don't think he's going to sit at first base like I justthink that's a pipe dream I I wouldn't mind to see like if you could find a way and this is this isaspirational and this is probably playing with more money than what we have but if he could somehow
01:21:00be the if you could go arise dh and get a first get a different first baseman like that's like aperfect dream world for me I would love that he's hitting top ofof the order with Catelle. You have a middle part of like, you know, Corbyn, whoever you bring in at first base,Nolan, maybe Jerry Sixth.Like I think that's a dream lineup for me.But that's wishful. That's wishful thinking.
01:21:26Yeah.Well, let's get a first base been in.Let's get a first base done in.We can talk.Yeah.Then we'll talk about the luxury of maybe signing a Luis de Rise after that. But if it is Luis de Rise, we will be talking about it.Of course, on the PhDs Dback show.
01:21:39and we'll bring back Jacob Franklin himself to discuss it further and debate it with, with your boy over here, of course.Jacob, they can give you a follow. What is that?Jacob underscore Franklin four.Yeah, Derek, as Derek would say, I'm the fourth best Jacob Franklin. The fourth best Jacob Franklin in existence. And of course, you can follow me at Damon Dogg.
