For just six pounds a month, binge ad-free adventures in full and have access to so much more over at patreon.com forward slash Sherlock & Co. Previously on Sherlock and Co.
00:49 Did a case without me, and that is the very last case you have done without me. It was a cab driver, wasn't it? Is that what you said? In Brixton, yes. I'm Laurie, Detective Chelsea Lorrester. But everyone calls you Laurie. Yeah, that's the part I missed out. People call me Lori. I just wanted to check if everything was...
01:10 Obviously, I don't know what the rules are with investigations in London, half the time, let alone. Utah, is it? Utah, that's right. Scarlet County, Utah. What happened? He said it's a murder. That's correct.
01:25 We... So we got an emergency call from Enoch Drebber. Discover Drebber to be deceased. Clawhammer. Both blunt and... and claw end. Drebber was a local guy. Been here a few years, janitor at the local high school, not a great deal of friends and admirers. A message carved into his chest. Raha. Revenge? Our Utah victim is Enoch Drebber. My Brixton victim was his brother, Redmond Drebber.
01:58 My taxi driver was an extremely disturbed man. Who the hell are you? I am a man that solved a murder. And now I wish to solve the case. The meds they were given to him in these tablet containers? No, no. What? Where did you find that? This box, this pill.
02:17 They are not from this unit. Not from this facility, no. John, call our detective in Scarlett, Utah. Detective Lorriston. Laurie, it's John Watson. I'm guessing you got my message regarding Davis Car, Michael. We found an empty pill box. We suspect it was on his point.
02:34 person or in his bed. Shit. What? What is it? We have that here too. At the crime scene. That's right. Sherlock, what do we do?
02:46 What do we do now? We go to Scarlet County, Utah. Archie, look at me. Look at me. I've told Wiggins that you get the special beef twisty things once a day. Once. Once.
03:15 I know what you do when you're with him. You manipulate him. He's here to look after you, not as some Archie vending machine that just dispenses treats at your every whim. There you go, Archie boy. Oh, wig! For God's sake. Ah, he looked hungry. How did you even get in here? Ah, you really let me up.
03:32 Heading to the US area now. Yeah. Yeah, got a case. Ah, having a bit of success stateside. No, it's just, it's a transatlantic situation. He must be fed three times a day, not twice, Not just morning and evening, he adores lunch, keep this window and this window ever so slightly open for ventilation and his respiratory well-being is paramount to his broader health.
03:56 His hind legs can get stiff, so massage them on Wednesday and again at the weekend. Mate, I've told him all the archie stuff, it's sorted. I'm not talking about Archie, I'm talking about Graham. Oh, of course. Ah, Wiggins, you will know, won't you? How to look after rats? Not really. He's not a rat, he's a mouse. And no, not that.
04:15 you will know a person. Who are we talking? Three years ago, Brixton. Oh, course, the abandoned house. Well, but for the carps that was occupying the first floor. Did you get it wrong? No, I did not get it wrong. Then why are you flying across the wall to fix it?
04:34 Because it is unresolved. So, you was wrong. I was not wrong. I just wasn't as right as I would have liked to have been, but in my defence I was very busy with a house move and our peoples like that can be very taxing. Sounds like you got it wrong. I did not get it wrong.
05:18 Welcome everybody to Heathrow Airport. We have just checked our bags and got to the other side of security. I can see Sherlock over in one of the stores drying out neck pillows and John of course is looking at the alcohol. It's just after lunchtime And I am having a peppermint tea
05:39 I like to kind of settle my stomach before I fly Not a big fan of takeoff Aw Oh, Wiggins has just sent an update in the group Or pop date, as he calls them Archie in the park Oh, cute boy
05:56 And yeah, that's kind of us really For those that are into the whole travel thing Scarlet, Scarlet is in Scarlet County which is basically east Utah. The flight will take us direct into Salt Lake City and we then have to hire a car and drive for about four hours along the 191, route 191, until we get to Scarlet.
06:22 We are staying at the Whiteheart Inn, which is in like the old town of that place. It seems pretty. It seems small. A bit of a rural. kind of outpost. Mountains in the background. But, yeah, kind of quiet from the photos.
06:43 And yeah, once again, we're off on an adventure. I hope that we can bring closure on something that began, wow, three years ago. I will, well, I'll turn this off now, but I'll make sure that Sherlock tells you all about the original case on the flight, okay? Okay. Bye. Hello. This is Sherlock Holmes speaking.
07:23 I am currently wedged between John on one side and Mariana on the other. Her head is on my shoulder, which I have put up with for a little over two hours now. She did not purchase a neck pillow at Heathrow, and now I see why. She has one. Me. To my left is John, who is watching his third action film of the flight. This one seems a little more grounded in realism, although, I did just see a man die through the air fire a Colt 45 with one of the two safety captures still on, by the way, and shoot an oil barrel, which of course exploded in a clean burning blast, not one rich with hydrocarbons like oil should be.
08:01 Get him, get him, shoot him, yes. And this is where you find us on our way to the murder scene of a Mr. Enoch Drebber. I am told that it is my responsibility to inform you of that case you missed all those years ago. when I first spoke into this very mic. Gwen Lestrade had me investigate the murder of Redmond Drebber, an American, very little known of his personal life back home. As part of a fairly lengthy itinerary that would eventually take him through Western Europe, down to Italy, across to Greece,
08:35 he found himself at his initial port of call, London. The first night he stayed at a hostel in the centre of London. The second night, I believe, after recovering from his jet lag, He ventured out to supple on London nightlife. He visited four central London pubs and one nightclub on Longacre before getting into a cab. He never made it back to the hostel. A PC, by the name of John Grants, meanwhile, spotted a light on him what we knew to be an empty property. In Brixton, he expected to find squatters, students, vandals, that sort of thing.
09:09 The person he found, however, was Redmond Drebber. Stabbed to death with a kitchen knife. I'm glad. That wasn't the very first you heard of the Sherlock and Coe podcast, as the crime scene was particularly gruesome. The doggedness and tenacity of the attack was evident from the very moment of stepping inside the house. It was a frenzy that could have only been powered by the most potent of fuels.
09:35 Rage. Who are you talking to? The listeners. Oh, good for you. What about? A horrific murder. Oh. You can return to your film.
09:46 Thanks. At the sea, scratched into the broken plaster in one of the first-story bedrooms was a word, R-A-C-H-E. Lestrade and Gregson suspected it could have been a call for someone, Rachel, perhaps. The nature of the attack, however, would have warranted no such time for the victim to do such a thing. It was not a message from the murdered, rather the murderer. R-A-C-H-E. Raha.
10:21 German meaning revenge. As we inspected the scene that night, I caught sight out the front window of an officer shooing away a family of foxes who are gathering at the front gate of this abandoned Brixton home. Foxes, like many animals, are highly attuned to the metallic taste of blood. An irresistible drive, courtesy of the evolutionary preserved molecule
10:44 E2D, for those of you that have interested in such things, blood. For an apex predator means food. For a fox, it could mean the freshly dead. It could mean an injured bird or rodent. We humans do not carry E2D. We are repelled by blood, not drawn to it. It sends us no signal. And the foxes, yes, the foxes, they sent one to me just in their presence.
11:12 I headed down to where they had gathered. Blood had started to congeal on and in the roadside drain. We popped open the nearby manhole cover and there were clothes and the weapon. The police sent for the lab, me for the cab. We found footage of it driving up Brookston Road and I sent for the irregulars upon learning the license plate. Except the driver did more than just drop Redmond Drebber off. He escorted him inside.
11:41 To his death. Wiggins spoke to his network and they reported seeing the cab driving not competently in central London like a typical cab driver would. Not erratically either, but nervously. Even scraping parked cars along its near side. So someone not used to our side of the road. Revenge. And our victim was an American. It proved likely that our killer was too.
12:09 Within an hour we determined the taxi. was merely a black Ford purchased from an independent dealer in Tottenham. And he told us of an American man that had purchased in cash. Fortunately, our Tottenham car dealer was the paranoid sort and had multiple security cameras. I looked at the footage and spotted that our cab driver had a tag on his jeans as well as a sticker on his jacket. A new outfit.
12:35 What we found in the drain were also new items. Why would you buy multiple new clothes it wasn't required for the murder? But it may be if you have recently landed and have failed to be reunited with your luggage. An irregular at Heathrow provided me with a list of single male American travellers that had reported missing luggage. I matched the picture of the passenger, Mr. Davis J. Carmichael, with the man on the footage in Tottenham. We contacted Mr. Carmichael and told him his luggage was found. We met him at Heathrow and tackled him to the ground. Well, I didn't.
13:08 I watched the moment with a cup of tea and a packet of biscuits. Davis was far from mentally sound. He could only speak of his victim Redmond Drebber as a monster. He spoke of psychological torture. Redmond was 20 years his senior, so it could have been possible that great emotional pain was inflicted on our murderer, somewhere in the storm of his past. The British courts certainly saw it that way. The Americans, not so much.
13:36 All sorted by yours truly in one night, beating the lab results to even. their initial findings. And now it would appear Enoch, his brother, has suffered the same fate, the same Raha. And that, for now, is where the story takes us. Lots of love, Sherlock Holmes. You don't need to say that. Just take the mic. Yep.
14:05 Can you believe this? I can't. I really can't, you know? Me neither. Believe what? That, that we are. We are driving across the US right now for work, for our tiny little detective agency. But that is what we're doing.
14:22 No, I know, but can you, God, can you believe it? Yes. She's saying how much we've grown, Sherlock, you know, how far we've come. From all those cases over the years, to this, to being out here in bloody Utah. I mean, look at that landscape. Unbelievable. The landscape, you find hard to believe. The journey, mate, the journey, our journey.
14:46 No journey has been made to bring us to this case. Oh, come off, dozens and dozens and dozens of cases later. Actually, this case precedes every single one of those. I... Yeah, shit. I was going to do like a whole uplifting montage that kind of illustrated our growth as people and, you know, our connection to each other against the backdrop of this road trip across the Midwest.
15:11 It's not the Midwest. It's not the Midwest? No. Oh, for God's sake. What is it then? It's the Mountain West. Oh, bullocks. You can still do your montage,
15:24 but just know that it's inaccurate. Yeah. Are you gonna do it? Nah, I don't know. I mean, this is a serious crime. You know, people are dead. For God's sake, it doesn't need me putting in some... Hi, I'm Mariana from Hudson.
15:43 Oh, thank God for that. Hi, Mariana, I'm John. Sorry, I'm late. The tubes today are terrible. Piccadilly, man. Yes, such a nightmare. Okay, are we ready? Don't tilt your head back.
15:58 I'm reversing the flow of blood. You're sending the blood down your throat. Better than on the carpet, isn't that right, Ms. Hudson? It's Mariana. I just work. Get enough blood down your throat. Is she okay? She is. And Kitty?
16:11 She's very okay. The baron, not so much. Um, oh, somebody posted this through the door. What is it? Well, it feels like, um, more money. Ah, great. So... Oh, you're leaving?
16:36 Yeah, shame. Downstairs is available. We'll take care of the rent. Oh, wow. I mean, I could run it. That... Yes, this is brilliant. What do you want to call the company?
16:52 Sherlock and Co. What about that? The foods are so big over here. Everything is big over here. Like this. Oh my God, what is that? It is a large gold. No, no, no, a big gold.
17:08 Goodness. Look at the mountains of life. I love you something. A long way from home, my friends. A long way from home. I spy with my little eyes. Something beginning with deep. This is going to be some sort of like
17:23 arachnid thing that's only in the Utah desert and literally no one else would have heard of it. Desert. Correct. Ha ha ha. Oh, what? I never thought I'd be in the vast plains of Utah, I are eating a hot dog under the gaze of some long-haul truckers.
17:50 But I am. And I'm glad I am. And I'm glad of the company. Me too. Holding the Russians accountable is World War III. They took down a British passenger jet containing 350 people. Man in the Kremlin is playing, Alex. Got to ask yourself.
18:50 You want to play or not? You're the Prime Minister. You've done nothing! We would need to understand the policy context. All the relevant context will be structured as a framework today, disseminated into an operation order, or Fraggo. A Fraggo that says to kill the president of Russia. Yes.
19:17 New from Gullhanger. Who is going to be able to pull this off? A Duff, Duffy! An audio drama journey like no other. Men like Duffy, they are our most valuable weapons. Devised as a technically rigorous, geopolitical action thriller. We have two-tenth-friendly key-a-eat. Where Britain plays its strongest hand.
19:39 He's the best. Against its strongest foe. Available now, wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome, everyone, to Scarlett, Utah. We've parked at the hotel, the inn, and just popped out for a little walk. stretch the legs and such and we are on Main Street or downtown Scarlet or whatever they call it. I can see various little shops and stuff. Distant mountains. It's a lovely clear afternoon.
20:27 And I have to say, it is very nice. It is nice. Hi there. Hi. Hello there. Oh, it is nice. And everybody is also super nice. Yeah, I know. Well, we know that not all.
20:42 the residents of Scarlet's nice. Do we? One of them murdered Enoch Drebber. Uh, yeah, that's not very nice in the grand scheme of things. So this is Old Town Scarlett, right? Hey, you're the map lady. I'm the content guy. Oh, wait, you're not the map lady.
21:00 I thought you, I thought you weren't being the map lady. Oh, you bought the data on your phone. Oh, that's right. Okay, um, ma-ma-ma-ma, yeah. This is Old Town. Its oldest building is from 1931. Yes, all right, thank you. The delightful people of Scarlet do not need your European snag.
21:19 Hello there! Hi! Hi! Here we are. Here you are indeed. Welcome to the Whitehearted. Thank you very much. We have a reservation.
21:35 Oh, exciting. Are you guys from England? We are. Whoa. No, yeah, that's right. This one is Spanish. Ola. Ola, sweetie.
21:45 I love those glasses. Oh, well, thank you. Thank you so much. But yes, we all flew from London. Ah, okay, I've got you here business booking. Sherlock and Co. Who's Sherlock and who's Co? I'm Sherlock. That's a great name. Thank you, Mr. Just Arty. Arthur Sharpentier, according to my mother, but she was always very formal. Very nice to meet you, Artie. And you? Well, let's get you to your rooms. Mr. Hunter, we have some bags that need moving to rooms 112, 113 and 114. Hey.
22:24 Oh, hi, mate. We can take them, honestly. Yeah, that's cool. Whatever. You've got the bill for it and the age. Where do these go? I told you, 112, 113 and 114. Uh-huh.
22:39 Listening, Hunter. Yeah. I'm going to get some signatures, please. I'm also going to ask for the card you used for the booking. Oh, sure. Yeah, I have that. Yes, I'll get to work on the check-in form. Well, as they say, teamwork makes the dream work. That's right. Here.
23:04 Thanks so much. And you're here on business? We are. And what kind of business brings you London folk to Scarlet? Murder, Mr. Charpentier. Sherlock? He asked. Enoch. Enoch Drebber That's exactly right
23:22 You knew him Yeah, well I know everybody in Scarlet Was he not born Several hundred miles from here I knew he was from out of town Sure, sure Sounds like you knew him too
23:35 Only from a report And a driver's license I see Yeah Well, um It's a difficult judgment Yes sir Yes sir
23:45 One I'm sure we are all fearful of, but it is a judgment nonetheless. This would be the judgment of the Lord. Yes, that's right. What was his transgression, exactly? I'm done with the form, so we can just... They were numerous. Numerous?
24:04 Mm-hmm. The flowers, they're very... Go ask the Board of Elders at Risen Life Church about Enoch Drebber. And they will tell you, sir. That's the chapel on this street? It is. beautiful place full of beautiful people
24:22 and I mean full I recommend you swing by they'd be honored to see you let's get you to your rooms just notice they don't do like a kettle with teas and stuff no shall I ask
24:47 he's a nice bloke reckon they have a kettle in here somewhere unlikely unlikely what that he's a nice bloke or that they have a kettle both What are you on about? What you call a kettle, they will likely call an electric tea kettle. A British kettle draws around 3,000 watts.
25:04 A US one, if you can find one, and I doubt you can, draws a maximum of 1800, and that is if very little else is drawing on the circuit. Therefore, boiling water, for their guests in each room, is not only a costly venture, but a time-consuming one. A bent about the nice bloke thing. Come on. What, that's a good question, that's a better question than how many watts does a kettle use? Where is Mariana? We need to go about our business.
25:29 Go about our business. Right, yes. What does that mean? It means what it means. Helpful. Business. Our job. Our company. Is tasked with solving the murder of the Drebbers. Mate, you solved one. It doesn't count. It doesn't count. And we know it doesn't. I'm going to just casually bring something up nice and easy.
25:52 And there's no judgment. There's nothing to worry about when I say it. But I'm just going to put it on your emotional radar, okay? Okay. You're out of your normal surroundings? I am, yes. You're in a different time zone. There are ways over here that seem quirky, seem different.
26:10 Smell different, too. Maybe things smell different, yeah, yeah. And, yeah, you're going to meet a lot of people that have a strong faith. Hmm, yes. This is what concerns me. Nothing to be concerned about. No? No, not at all. It's just a matter.
26:27 to their life. It's just a guide, a little compass for them. They're not judging you for being someone without faith, okay? Okay. Okay. So I should tell them that I'm godless. Well, no, don't do that. Don't introduce yourself, hi, I'm Sherlock and I'm godless. Just, if you have to, then tell them, if you don't have to, then just keep it to yourself. I will try my best. I have always struggled with the concept of to religious belief and I'm sorry. I just asked if you were paying with cash or card, sir. Oh, um, card, please, yes.
27:08 CARD. I think next time... There's going to be a next time? Just keep it below the surface a little more. A little more, you say? Yeah, just... Whatever layout your mind has, just kind of store it away right in the back
27:27 in a dusty old box that says do not open. Hey, look, there it is. Written Life Chapel. Incredible building. Wow. Whoa. Yeah, amazing. The Vatican or something. Now that is a hell of, heck of an atmosphere they've got going on in there. Do we want to go in?
27:50 I mean, I mean, I feel like we should be meeting with residents, getting to know them. There is one resident. We must meet before any other. Who? Enoch Drebber. This is Enoch. Thanks for arranging this. Lorry, I appreciate it probably wasn't easy.
28:16 I got some pretty wild looks when I said some British investigators wanted to take a peek, but nobody told me I couldn't, so here we are. He looks like his brother. Was he ever a resident of Scarlett? His brother Redmond? No. Enoch was, I mean, I think he's only lived in Scarlet, maybe three years, four years, something like that.
28:47 And we have the same message. R-A-C-H-E on his chest, here. Oh, and I've got scene photos, too. Here. This is the position we found him in. Hmm. A recent arrival to the community, but according to our tavern. at the White Hart Inn, Mr. Drebber here never truly assimilated.
29:14 He was... I mean, he was quiet, I'd say, but it's not like he was an outsider. People knew who he was. Perhaps more for his position than his person. Raha is German. It means revenge. Enoch moved from wherever he moved from. Was he being chased by the vengeful, perhaps?
29:38 We know he spoke with the vengeful He knew what they wanted with him When they turned up at his property Um, can we hear it again? Sure Look at his fingers, here Can he stay on the line? Door not
29:59 From a tight grip on something Being ripped away Layers of skin All taken off, see? Weird What, John? Oh, just get. Full on, isn't it?
30:14 No. What is it? Hmm? You're hovering. I... Am I not supposed to hover? You don't, usually. Don't I?
30:23 You've noticed something. I... The wound's on his face. Hammer. From a hammer, right. Right. John, what do you see? Come on, tell us.
30:40 Can I see the photos again, the crime scene ones? Sure. Right, so... I'll... I'll start with... this face, uh, so you've got these hollow
30:57 sort of divvets, right? That's from the blunt end of the hammer, and the killer has switched to the sharper end on occasion. The claw of the hammer. Yeah, yeah, that's these
31:08 lacerations, but well, unless these wounds have had substantial cleaning. No. Then there's very little sign of hemorrhage. Yeah? Do you follow?
31:23 Sort of? Kind of. Completely. The crime scene photos. There's no spatter either. Do you think he was moved? Zero evidence points to the body being moved. Well, where's the...
31:37 I mean, look at these impacts. These walls would be... Spattered. Spattered. Splashed, sprayed, you name it. But there isn't the... The... Pressure.
31:47 Exactly. The blood pressure is dropped. It's gone. It's nothing. He's... He was already dead before the attack. The hammer attack is a cover for another means of murder. To hear right up to the end of part five, go to patreon.com forward slash Sherlock and Cove.
