The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for the following traffic
restrictions from 9 p.m. Tuesday, January 20th to 5 a.m. Wednesday, January 21st,
as part of the Phase 2 interchange improvements in the surprise area.
Southbound 163 Avenue to eastbound U.S. 60 will be reduced to two left turn lanes.
The westbound US 60 left turn lane to southbound 163rd Avenue will be closed, however, flaggers will be on site to allow left turns.
Westbound U.S. 60 to northbound 163rd Avenue will be reduced to one right turn lane.
The eastbound U.S. 60 left turn lane to northbound 163rd Avenue will be closed, however, flaggers will be on site to allow left turns.
These restrictions are to allow for work to prepare for a second eastbound U.S. 60 left turn lane to north
1 163rd Avenue with a dedicated left-turn traffic signal arrow. The protected left-turn signal
will be in operation on Wednesday, January 21st. The new turn lane is expected to be open by early
February. Drivers should slow down, stay alert, and be prepared to merge with caution when
approaching and traveling through all work zones. Visit the project website at ozdot.gov
