Starting point is 00:00:01 Hello and welcome to Talking Baseball. America's front office. Me and Trev are starting to look at the upcoming trade deadline. Let's see what we find. Let's talk ball. Nick Pavetta. Ricky Weeks. Double.
Starting point is 00:00:24 Right center. Pettta out of the bullpen. Hello and welcome to talking baseball. I'm presenting you by Fanatics Markets. Go check out Fanatic. markets today. I am Jake Storelli. That is Trevor Ploof, Bob Seraco produced and Dalton Feeley, assembling some information for us as we dive into what becomes the talk of baseball this time every year. It's the trade deadline. We got a little bit to go. And, you know, we'll give you
Starting point is 00:00:57 some warnings about we're going to say, you know, well, this team could, could this team sell? Could this team? What if they get hot? There's a lot of this that we can't chew through, especially with the new the new wild card man the whole american league is alive um but we're going to see what we find we've already stumbled into a few things talk some potential best players available we're not doing prospects if you want that go listen to some geeky podcast or something we don't have that we we like our pro ball players speaking of Trevor ploof eight years of service time not quite unfortunately i don't have a gold card it's fine way to throw that out there at the any of the episode embarrass me like that.
Starting point is 00:01:38 My bad. I thought it was eight. Parts of nine years. That's what people like to say. Okay. Listen, I wouldn't call it go to a geeky podcast. It's just not what we do here. I don't have the minor league system up
Starting point is 00:01:52 and understanding what is going on. And to be honest with you, I don't think anybody really does. I made this, or we were talking before, here's a thing about like trade packages and putting them together with minor leaguers. Nobody knows how each team values. use these prospects. They all have their own way of determining value. I promise you that. They do. So any sort of top 100 rankings, yeah, it's a good guideline. But a certain team may have their
Starting point is 00:02:19 eye on a guy for a certain reason that we have no idea about. That's just how it is nowadays. It's okay. It's fine. We're not going to do that. We're going to talk ball like we usually do, Jake. I feel like that's what's going to happen this episode. And it's, it is early to talk trades, but it's fun. it's fun to do it and particularly now when you can kind of say whatever you want and there's a chance
Starting point is 00:02:44 like everyone's kind of got a chance to be a buyer and everyone's kind of got a chance to be a seller. I know you said in this new age of the wild card that everyone's still in it I don't know.
Starting point is 00:02:55 I don't know if that's true. Yeah and I just got a giggle we were talking before the show about how we want to do this episode and we were like you know should we throw out you know, the craziest trades that could happen. Should we each dig one up? There might have been, Tatis to the Yankees might have been mentioned. I won't say who said it.
Starting point is 00:03:14 And yeah, man, that's, it's beautiful sports fodder and it can also be also be awful sports fodder. So we're going to try our best to toe the line. I do think where the conversation is going to start this year is with Scoobel. Scuba was one of the biggest names spoke about this off season that people thought a trade was going to get done because Detroit was going to, Detroit basically came out and said, we're not going to be able to pay what scubel wants in free agency. So with one year left, 32 mill, they didn't know that at the time those quotes came out. And then from there, they go on, they signed Framber Valdez.
Starting point is 00:03:50 It looks like they're going to waltz into the playoffs. And it's been the exact opposite of that. They've been the second worst team in the American League. And scubel's just, he's on a special run right now. like I know I throw out de Grom sometimes. Sandy, who's going to be mentioned in this episode? Like, scoble just, maybe it's something with the lefty pitcher as we talk about. He is on a special run right now.
Starting point is 00:04:15 He just had his first rehab start where he mowed everyone down over five innings. So his name is going to be the most discussed name. And the other, I don't know, tradeism that we probably need to get ahead of is like, the pitchers are going to be tough because literally every team could need them. So I'm sorry, if you on your team are talking about scoobel, Sandy, whoever it is, yeah, because every team can use those guys. Sandy is such an interesting product as well. I think those are the two main names. Joe Ryan's probably going to be thrown in there as well.
Starting point is 00:04:51 I mean, you could talk about a Nate dog, Yovaldi on the block. I was trying to see. I forgot what Sandy's contract is left. and it's a team option for next year. So, like, I don't know if that makes him more valuable or less valuable for the Marlins. I guess, like, if you're a team, you're like, hey, cool, we're on the hook for basically nothing.
Starting point is 00:05:15 It's a $2 million buyout. You're pro-rating half of 17.3 this year for Sandy. So I think that makes him more valuable, like, for the Marlins. I think you can get more because you have the option. to, like, you can see how it goes. Trev, but I'll answer this question for you. Because I, you know, you and I have gotten very good at manipulating each other's brains, especially if it's late night in the city and maybe we need something to enjoy the night.
Starting point is 00:05:47 If Sandy Alcantara was a free agent, is he getting more than one year, $20 million? But I'm saying, like, so, if he's a pure rental, you're, you're, you're, you know what you're going to give up for him, it's going to be less of a package, right? If you're the Marlins, like, all right, you're giving away for a half of a season. So it's not as much the package back to you. If he's got a year and a half, yeah, you can expect to get more. But another team's like, hey, look at some of these numbers from Sandy this year. They're not exactly blowing you away.
Starting point is 00:06:21 I mean, his last, like, five starts. I mean, you could look at against the brave, six innings, six runs. Toronto's following won five and two thirds eight runs. Like it's not like it's great right now. So you can dream because we've seen Sandy ball in this league and you know, hey, our organization can fix anyone. Great. So I'm just saying like the option to be like
Starting point is 00:06:43 actually we're good and here's two million bucks. I think that means a lot to teams. I see what you're saying. It gives you if you really want the exit, it's there. Choose your own adventure with Sandy, baby. We've seen what pitchers get. And we know how front offices and how much they taste themselves. If they bring in Sandy,
Starting point is 00:07:03 they think they're going to get the best Sandy ever. And they think one year, 20 million is going to be a deal. Yes, this seems like the Sandy year. Do you think Scoobel's getting traded? Because I guess where are you at with the Tigers and where are you at with that in general?
Starting point is 00:07:20 It's interesting. I mean, they just have not played well at all. That's no secret there. They do have, it's not only scobs who is a free agent to be it's kC myes as well who you know when he's pitched this year has actually pitched really really well so he's on his way back so they actually have these two guys who they can imagine imagine a package of those two guys going somewhere what
Starting point is 00:07:44 is that bringing back i do think they're in this interesting spot where they they can they can they can give up on this this year and still be a team that can compete next year in the AL in the AL in the AL central so unless there's a there's a drastic turnaround because right now Jake as they sit and we're talking uh well we're filming this late Tuesday June 9th for people they're five and a half games out of a wild card spot right now but there is one two three four five six teams in front of them. So again, we're a little early to really be definitive on that answer, but I do think it ends up happening. I do think Scott Harris, in his own little world, is probably being like, you know what, this might be best case scenario. Like, we were going to go for it. We got Framber. It just didn't
Starting point is 00:08:40 work out. Now, I don't think he, I believe the fan base won't be upset with them if he trades Terrick Schoon. Whereas if they were in the hunt, obviously you can't do it. They kind of put themselves in this position. Now, because of the injury, loose bodies, he's. he's already back, which is crazy. I think he could do it. It's probably the best thing for the organization in the long run, not for this year, obviously, but for the long run,
Starting point is 00:09:02 I think he ends up pulling the trigger. I think school does end up going. I do think it's the safe bet. I just, it is funny. I mean, the Detroit Tigers may be coming off their best week of the season, five and one.
Starting point is 00:09:14 They're about to play your twins. Like, are we going to look up and, you know, the six teams ahead of them turns into three teams ahead of them and they're chasing five, and you have scoble, you got Mize back. Like, they have been hit by the injury bug this year.
Starting point is 00:09:30 That I do think it is a really, it's going to be an interesting dance because, A, they need to turn it around, which they have it. So that would have to happen. They're going to get other people back. And then there's just an interesting, the tigers have to look at themselves and be like, it's what are we getting back? Are we? Because like some of the rumored packages are that they could get,
Starting point is 00:09:53 I don't know. I talked to an MLB executive. How do you like that? Oh, gosh. And they were like, I think it's going to be the Dodgers. Because, again, think of the math here. Like, okay, scuba still gets paid. You know, by the trade deadline, scuba's still going to be owed $15 million.
Starting point is 00:10:13 Some teams that matters. Dodgers couldn't care less. Scoobel, there might be injury risk. Dodgers couldn't care less. They're going to see who's there at the end of the line and figure it out. And it's just who they've been as an organization that they are the safest bet. And if that happens, oh, my God, get ready for a labor pot at the deadline. And that person I talked to throughout, like, you know, would they do, would the Dodgers do an Emmett?
Starting point is 00:10:42 Or name young Dodger pitcher, Roblesky, Sheehan, whoever it is. River Ryan. River Ryan, why not? Where's our guy, where's Gavin Stone at? Could they throw, could they throw a young pitcher who if they click, you might get a young pitcher for three, four years? Then they throw in another prospect. They've got a ton of outfielders.
Starting point is 00:11:04 The other thing that's going in my head right now is if you're the Tigers and maybe the Central does come back in play or an AL Wildcard, if you trade scoble and you get another MLB starting pitcher in and you get a prospect, Like I go back to Otani a couple years ago Where I was affirmed don't trade Otani Because if you're the Angels I don't know Just hold on to that man as long as you can
Starting point is 00:11:29 I believe it came out that they got a junior Caminero trade offer That I'll tell you what The Halos would love to have junior Caminero right now That I think if you're the Tigers You do have to have a little realism But it's also weird This AL like are my Yankees the favorite right now
Starting point is 00:11:45 Because Yankee fans don't even really like The Yankees right now There's no favorite in the ALEs They're truly, truly... Ooh, I like that. I mean, there really isn't. I mean, you can go to the Mariners. Make social team.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Make that a poster. Ask Mariners fans what they think of their team. My gosh, every time I try to compliment them, I get yelled out either way with Mariners fans. I compliment them. Like, you don't watch ball. Okay. They stink.
Starting point is 00:12:06 You don't watch ball. All right. Josh Naylor shouldn't be running into people. You don't watch ball. I'm like, all right, dude. I love Seattle. I'll be there in a couple weeks. I'll be there for a couple weeks.
Starting point is 00:12:17 And people are so nice to be in person online. my goodness. I do look at this Dodgers outfield prospect depth. I know, so we're going to do prospects, but they're all like, or at least two of them, at the AAA level raking. And they do have a ton of young pitching. It does make sense for Detroit specifically to target that.
Starting point is 00:12:39 So I definitely can see that happening. On the tiger's front, I just feel like if you trade scoobes, you got to trade Mize as well, right? Maybe it again, this is where we start walking all over yourself. I don't know if you don't get offered the right thing. And Casey Mize does look good. You offer him the qualifying offer, who knows?
Starting point is 00:13:01 I'm curious if Mize is qualifying offer, a qualifying offer guy. I mean, dude, that's the thing. Probably. If you're a starting pitcher that gets, if you're a starting pitcher that gets to the finish line with an ERA four and under. But every, every year. Nick Martinez got the qualifying offer. Like, no effect. And by the way, he was awesome.
Starting point is 00:13:25 Sorry Nick Martinez. I didn't mean it with that Vim and Vigor, but like. I guess, I guess Casey Myes all star last year. Former 1-1, right? War Dam? First, I mean, last two years, he's been pretty good. Last year, ERA Plus 106, FIPP 389, WIPP 126. It's real.
Starting point is 00:13:51 And then he had one year in 2020. Okay. So yeah, he's, he's, to me, he's a fringe qualifying offer guy. I guess if you're,
Starting point is 00:13:57 if you're a Detroit and he accepts the qualifying offer, you're like, all right, cool. One year, 23 million, wherever the hell it will be.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Like, I think that works. Okay. I could see that. In my mind, they're both, if one goes, they both go.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Interesting, man. One other team, the other fun team that everyone's throwing out there is the Brewers because there is like a C. C.C. Sabatia situation and you can envision them, uh,
Starting point is 00:14:19 being like, Ms. Scoobes, Kyle Harrison, nasty bullpen. But Chris Rose asked that question and I reminded him of, because he's like, well, they have to get past the Dodgers. I'm like, that wasn't the problem last year
Starting point is 00:14:32 against the Dodgers. Yeah. They scored one run per game against the Dodgers and they only gave up. I think it was the scores were two, five, four, two or something like that. Dodgers run the scores. The run prevention wasn't necessarily the problem.
Starting point is 00:14:48 It was it was the bets. Yeah, the brewers don't register for me. I mean, they've literally turned Kyle Harrison into a form of scubel. So, like, they, they've, they've, they've, they've, they've, they've, they've, except when he plays in Vegas. Okay. Did you see that? The ERA jumped a full point.
Starting point is 00:15:06 That's tough. Okay. I got to catch up. I was, I was at the Knicks game watching what was going to be my favorite game in my life become not my favorite game in my life. Jake, last year, just to make sure I got it right. Dodgers, it was two to one, five to one, three to one, five to one, to one.
Starting point is 00:15:23 Yes, and that's where, I don't know. For me, the scoble teams turn into, and I don't, I guess you guys let me know if these are your teams or if you guys disagree, whatever. I think it's the Dodgers. I think it's the Braves. Like, hey, man, right, the Braves, we've been talking about their starting pitching. We've been talking about them looking for an all-in move.
Starting point is 00:15:46 in the NL it's an absolute like it's it's what's what was I going to say a war uh what's it called when you load up for war like an ammo war arms race nice dude NL complete arms race a lot of shows would edit that out you better not Rob don't you dare the the Braves and what they've been this season and what could put them over the
Starting point is 00:16:16 obviously scoble. I think the Dodgers are back in play. And then, like, you want me to fire up the Mighty Brewer machine a little bit. If these cubbies can figure things out again, I think they'd be a great scoble team. Like, if this was supposed to be a Chipsall in year, they've just had one of the worst months of baseball I've seen. And in the AL, the ironic, okay, which teams stand out? The Yankees, the Mariners, kind of, you know, the rays are raising their hand, and they've been looking. for kind of a trade deadline move like this, so I wouldn't rule them out.
Starting point is 00:16:50 The Yankees have pitching. The Mariners have pitching that everyone's looking for hitting that, obviously you can use scoble, but I think the supply and demand of the trade deadline has him going to the National League. Or staying with Detroit. I think there's a, I have it as like 40%. He doesn't get traded. The tigers get hot, and they try to survive the American League.
Starting point is 00:17:15 It's obviously depends on what they do as a team over the next three weeks. Like that's really the discussion here. Today's episode is sponsored by Xfinity. Imagine everything that can change in five years. Jobs, kids, new memes. But what if you had reliable, intelligent Wi-Fi? And the price didn't change. That's what's great about Xfinity.
Starting point is 00:17:38 Five-year price guarantee. You lock in reliable high-speed Wi-Fi for five years. No annual contracts. No hidden fees. Xfinity's best equipment is included, and it's not just fast, it's smart. Xfinity Wi-Fi helps boost speeds to the devices that need the most. Detect and fix issues before you even notice keeps you protected from online threats. So even though kids will grow up, you still won't understand what 6-7 means your internet is going to stay sharp, reliable, and most importantly, the price will stay put.
Starting point is 00:18:09 Plus, get online in minutes the same day, Wi-Fi, all with Xfinity's five-year price guarantee. Locking your price, unlock the possibilities. Exfinity, imagine that. Restrictions apply, select plan's own. What about like a bat? I know we talk a lot about pitchers, and I'm not trying to put you on the spot here because I'm also searching myself.
Starting point is 00:18:28 Like, the only bat that we really have seen mentioned that could be moving is like Taylor Ward. We've seen rumors there. There's just not a lot of, there's just, it's hard to find hitters nowadays, Jake. So, like, guys that could be on the move, like there's jock peterson and taylor ward like that's not kudos to those guys taylor ward's been great jock peterson we used to call him the mercenary um is that that's kind
Starting point is 00:18:57 of is that the market right now like who else am i missing i guess it could be some young guys if you're trying to really uh you know go get a front line starter or something like that but a guy that's just available mercenary end of the contract free agent there's not a lot out there. Right, the traditional trade deadline piece. I'll, I'll give the people kind of a jakey daydream for a little bit. And I did some of this on Wake and Jake, but with with the expanded wildcard format, uh, and we've talked about this. That was one of the things that could hurt the deadline. I was wondering because, okay, if you're a team that thinks you can get in, but you still have needs, you're still going to try to address these needs. So what's, what's the move? I'm wondering if a
Starting point is 00:19:39 team like the Rockies, who they have a new front office now, like, they still need a full rebuild plan. Like, I'm not sure who Mickey Moniac is. I know you love him. I know he's got an OPS in the nine's right now. I know he's hurt. Like, would a team be willing to pay more in prospect capital? Like, what if the Rocky said Hunter Goodman's available? I'll tell you what, my Yankees would empty the farm for Hunter Goodman. Like a quality controlled catcher. So that's what I'm wondering if the trade deadline could start to go that way. If you're a team that is 100% selling, like are you willing to do that?
Starting point is 00:20:23 For the Rockies, there's not a two year plan, Treb. Like the Dodgers are here. There's other very good teams in the division. if you could really, when have we ever said, like, you know the Rockies have a top three farm system? Like, they still need to do that part that I'm wondering if we're going to hear stuff like that. All right.
Starting point is 00:20:45 So Mickey Moniac has this year and next before he's a free agent. You're talking about pillaging. That's what you're talking about. You're going after the bottom dudes and taking their players, which I actually, now that you're bringing it up, the Rockies make a ton of sense just because of their front office turnover and hey I want to put my stamp
Starting point is 00:21:06 and I want to make my first trade and we're not going to pay this guy anyway unless they do and make him the new Charlie Blackman like there's a possibility there right? Yeah. Yes. I don't know what type of money you would take to sign Mickey Moniac long term right now
Starting point is 00:21:22 but I bet you could do it. This guy struggled a lot. Finally finds his footing in Colorado. I think if you put a number in front of them, he'd sign it. That's just my take on. I know I would if I was in his position. So there's, there's that aspect to it too. But I could definitely see that happening without a doubt. You're totally right about that. Hunter Goodman, I think, is a little, in a little bit different category than, than Mickey Moniac would be. He's got more years of control,
Starting point is 00:21:48 plays a premium position. It's 26. And they do have some young hitters on that team that I think they'd want to form a core around. So I don't know if Hunter Gibman is not a free until 20, 30. That's, I don't know if that happens. I do like the Mickey Moni. I didn't think about that. And then I also forgot to talk about Louisa Rise when I was mentioning guys because I think that's also going to be someone that ends up getting traded. We'll talk about a segue, Trevin. This is why we're the best in the biz. Everyone subscribe, comment and all of that. Louisa Rise is the number one guy I have circled as an impact player at this deadline. And it's for everything you mentioned. It's the most secure. Like, if we're going to start doing it.
Starting point is 00:22:30 other trades and we could get lost in these giants for 20 minutes because we could start doing the Devers retrade. We could start doing Willie Adomis to the Bronx. Like you can daydream about the giants and get crazy, but all of those are crazy except one thing. Louisa Rice, who had one, or I shouldn't say he had one flaw. He was good on one side of the ball. It was, it was a, you know, obviously contact hitting only, really, but also, that was winning batting titles. Like it's a special ability that only he has. Somehow he's figured out defense, thanks to Ron Washington. And he's on a one-year deal that he is the definition of if you go through right now, guys that could be traded, someone who's going to bat one through four in your lineup.
Starting point is 00:23:20 And I said one through four trep because I do think there's something with modern baseball. I think we did figure it out. Like your best hiter should hit first or second. I think we got that part right. I think we're going to see more contact bats in the middle, because if you walk that Soto, if you walk that judge, you walk Nick Kurt, then you have a guy who the pitcher is going to make you throw it in the zone, have a guy who puts it out there, that Louisa Rise, and depends whatever team he could be dealt to, I think he's going to be an impact bat. You want him in the top of your lineup. You want him getting four at bats a game. If you have a hole at second base, which, besides the National League Central, everyone does.
Starting point is 00:24:03 Like, you can find a spot and change your whole team dynamic with Louisa Rice. That I think we got too nerdy on him, and this is maybe me giving myself a pat on the back, because I've been a, hey, when Louisa Rise and Pete Alonzo were free agents, I was like, get those guys in my building. I know what they do to baseballs. And think about the speech you just gave. We're looking for guys that can hit baseballs that I think Louisa Rise is going to, to be like, and maybe this is comma sad for the deadline, but he might be the best hitter
Starting point is 00:24:36 trade. He's turned it around defensively. He's going to only be owed around $6 million. Yeah, I mean, he's an interest to one. And I do, I'll push back on the putting this guy in the middle of the order. The only thing I'll say is I have a team that go station to station a lot. And man, there is nothing worse than that. watching station to station baseball is some sort of cruelty you need guys running around the bases that's what we've been trying to do manfred's done a good job of that like guys flying around the bases it's such a better product than station to station every time i see a guy get a base hit and a runner only move one base i'm like gosh because pitchers are too good oh okay oh anyways uh yeah okay um louisa rice potential landing spots
Starting point is 00:25:26 So this is going to make you and everyone laugh. Give me something. Then I want to go back to the Giants. Don't forget to go back to the Giants. It was in Passon's article and it literally sparked if I called him. I called him live on Wake and Jake because I hadn't talked to him in a while too. And I was like, you know what Jeff Passon likes? A little compliment. Jeff Passon had Luis Arise to my Texas Rangers who I think are going to be a part of this season. We got to have me.
Starting point is 00:25:56 we got to talk about them too. They're so interesting, man. Dude, what if the Texas, you're a righty on the mound and the Texas Rangers open up with some Louisa Rise, some Corey Seeger, Langford,
Starting point is 00:26:08 Langford's back, Jock Peterson. Like, you can do something there. I know. And that I really like that because I think if you're a team in the ale that's on the fringe, if you can turn from a seven to an eight,
Starting point is 00:26:26 you're a contender in the American. I like that a lot. Yeah, they're such an interesting team because they could go. I think they're, I mean, they're obviously in a better spot than the Tigers are at, but the same goes with them. And most of these teams were talking about in the Yale. It's like, okay, what are you going to do the next two weeks? I mean, they could have some real impact players traded if they wanted.
Starting point is 00:26:49 Nathan Evaldi has this year and next, I believe at 25 per year. He's like one of my favorite pitchers in baseball. hasn't been as good this year, but you know he's a dog. But I do think they end up holding on to everyone. The Jock Peterson, Jock Peterson could be a guy that could they do both? Could they trade four or I and get rid of Peterson? Does that make sense at all? I don't think it does, right?
Starting point is 00:27:19 I don't think it does. I think you got to go one way or the other. Well, Peterson D-Hing. That's the thing. It's like D.Hs to me. Unless you're freaking bawling, it's tough to have a DH only because it doesn't allow for a Corey Seeger to get a freaking day off and still hit. Like, you know what I mean? Like flexibility in the DH role, I think means a lot to organizations.
Starting point is 00:27:43 Again, unless you have a Yordon Alvarez or somebody like that. And is Jock Peterson hitting like that? It's hitting pretty well. But I do think with like the guys they have in their team, they like some of that versatility. So there's a world, right? There's a world. Unfortunately, there's a world for a lot of stuff, right? I'm just down loud.
Starting point is 00:28:04 I'm just thinking out loud, bro. That's what we're doing. We're just talking ball. The Rangers could be the best team from now until the trade deadline. They could also be the worst team from now to the trade deadline. Was baseball always that way? Or is there something with analytics there? We don't need to say the A word today.
Starting point is 00:28:22 People use that word wrong, Jake. I know. So much. We're going to get it. You're right. I got one other team and one other fit, and it is from Brother Jeff's article. And it's a team that I think it's going to make you perk up a little bit.
Starting point is 00:28:37 Another one, Brother Jeff, throughout there was Taylor Ward, who is a free agent after the season, right-handed hitting corner outfield. There's a team that loves to make moves that's been itching for a right-handed hitting corner outfielder for years, the Philadelphia Phillies, that the Orioles who, dude, we could give the Orioles the same speech. They get hot for a week. They're back in the AL again. Taylor Ward, who's a true rental, we know the Phillies are going to be active.
Starting point is 00:29:04 They almost signed Boba Shett before the season. I almost laughed. Imagine if they came out of the clouds for scoops or Sandy. Like, would that, it wouldn't shock us at all. And that's kind of the fun part. But when I saw that Taylor, when I saw a rise to Texas and I saw Taylor Ward to Philadelphia, I unironically said Jeff Passon Cook.
Starting point is 00:29:26 they don't have a strong farm system. And again, that's not my, that's not my area of expertise, but when you're ranked down the bottom, 25, 24, what did you just eat right there, big dog? I just took a gummy. Okay, good, good for you, because we're getting to that point.
Starting point is 00:29:44 I need to sleep, man. That Knicks game killed me. I was wired, sad. You were. There was a lot of energy. I just, yeah, I'm curious, like, and he does make sense for them because he's a true rental,
Starting point is 00:29:55 it won't cost a ton. so they'll be like, hey, man, here's five prospects, pick, pick one out or pick two out, depending on who they are. And that is a way that they do it, which is so funny. Right. Like, organizations will literally be like, okay, here's one tier of prospects and here's the other tier of prospects. Take one from this tier and two from this tier and let us know. And it's like, oh, this is crazy how they do this. And that goes back to what I was saying before, like teams value different players differently.
Starting point is 00:30:24 I like the move for them. You get Adelaise Garcia out of right field. Now all of a sudden, Brandon Marsh and Taylor Ward in the corners, that's fun. Justin Crawford got to like step it up a little bit and center. I don't know if there's a lot of centerfield help out there. But yeah, the Phillies have to make a move. They just have to. They're just too far down this rabbit hole.
Starting point is 00:30:48 They're too far gone. They can't go the other way. Like they're making moves and need to win with this core. That's the only thing we can say. And maybe, no, never mind. Okay. I was just thinking, well, there's a Bome situation, but no one's taking that on anyway. So he's also a free agent at the end of the year.
Starting point is 00:31:06 I don't know where I was going with that. But they have to make a move. I like the Taylor Ward thing there. I do want to go back to the Giants. And this is a fun discussion to me. And again, here's the disclaimer. I know this isn't going to happen because I just don't think it can. Perfect.
Starting point is 00:31:22 but you could they could blow the whole thing up and they would have to do it for it to make sense they'd have to try to pay down with Domus's contract that have to try to pay down with Chapman's contract
Starting point is 00:31:36 who's playing a lot better as of now there's like a Logan Webb argument to be had I just ruled against that earlier talking to Chris Rose because it's like you can't just find that guy growing on trees like he's a true workhorse
Starting point is 00:31:51 in an era where that doesn't have happen anymore, but like, where does Buster Posey go if he doesn't blow it up? It's, and he's just going to end up doing the same thing. I don't see them like going out into free agency and making some sort of impact sign. So it's like either you push forward with what you got and that hasn't worked out for them in how many years since Gabe Kapler was there. Maybe that's your, what you need to do. Um, but like, right, like the only other option is to like get everyone out of there and it's going to be very difficult for them because of the contract situations
Starting point is 00:32:25 and the level of play from these guys. Yeah, last year I feel like I said the phrase contender for contender trade a lot and it didn't happen because it's just impossible. Although maybe that Red Sox Brewers trade this off season
Starting point is 00:32:41 kind of was supposed to be but it hasn't been. I think as I'm looking at these teams now because a team in the, I mean we haven't talked the Red So and the Royals at all who have been bad and they could have potential impact trade pieces. When I was looking at the National League,
Starting point is 00:32:59 what are the Giants and the Mets going to do? Two teams next to each other in the standings, only the Rockies below them right now, that like, how are they going to attack this? Are the Mets going to sell, sell? Are the Giants going to, if there's not a lot of sellers available, like how many teams could use Matt Chapman right now?
Starting point is 00:33:20 If the Giants are like, hey, you essentially got to pick up the tab, maybe throw something in. Like, think about those Phillies we just talked about. Think about my Yankees. I mean, Matt Chat on the Phillies just, it keeps going. Like, that's their ammo. Oh, my God. Do they just start selling boner pills at the stadium? Like the testosterone in Philadelphia.
Starting point is 00:33:42 Chapman, Trey Turner, Bryce, and Stott, Bryce Harper in the infield. You might have to join the team as like an assistant. I would get. I would, if they said, well, pay you nothing, but you can be on the coaching staff. I'd say, yes. Sorry, Liz, I gotta go. You would have one of those, know how we have those like BS front office positions that popped up that were like, what are these? What does Jace Tingler do?
Starting point is 00:34:01 You would be, you would be like the lead testosterone management guy. Like, hey, make sure these guys don't rip each other's faces off. Or sometimes I'd like, hey, let's pump it up a little bit here. Let's go. But really, I mean, that is an interesting thought process right there. God. They were going to sign Bichette, right? Let me just get it up
Starting point is 00:34:22 because I don't know it off the top of my head. I know it's a lot. Matt Chapman contract six years 151. So he still has, Jake, four years after this and it's all 25. Anyways, it's a fever dream essentially. I honestly don't know which way the giants end up going over the next year or so.
Starting point is 00:34:50 Again, I think that you just have to push forward of what you got. I think they're actually in a similar position as the Phillies, except I think Dave Dunbrouse, he's just a nut. And maybe the Phillies are just better because they have a better overall roster and they perform better. And they have you on Durand too. This episode is sponsored by Samuel Adams. This summer, America turns 250 and nobody's more ready to raise a glass than the beer named after a founding father himself, Samuel Adams,
Starting point is 00:35:19 from the man who helps spark a revolution to the brand that's been brewing independence since 19, For Sam Adams is leading the celebration all summer long. Crack open a summer ale. Yes, Sam Summer, yes. Chris, citrus, wheat ale with a bright lemon finish. Tastes like the 4th of July and a glass. Or grab the limited edition Star Spangled Variety Pack. Summer ale, porch rocker, American light, and fan favorite blueberry logger.
Starting point is 00:35:47 Look for their retro-inspired packaging at a store near you because this isn't just another summer. it's America's 250th. Join the rally and raise a Sam for the founders, for the flavor. For 250 years of independence, cheers to 250. America, this Sam's for you. Samuel Adams, the Boston Beer Company,
Starting point is 00:36:05 Boston, Massachusetts, Samuel Adams.com, savor the flavor response. The other team we have to talk about, which I'll let you, I'll answer your questions. My twins have trade pieces. Okay, here we go, people.
Starting point is 00:36:21 We do. Uncle up. We do. I am not part of the front office. No. But I am around the team a lot. And I do think there is, if you follow the twins at all, new ownership, not new ownership, but a new part of a member of the family running things. It feels a little different.
Starting point is 00:36:42 My guy, Tom, I think it would take a lot for him to move people. Like, he's trying to win fans back in Minnesota. and because the AL is the way the AL is, I think it would take a lot for him to do it. But there is Joe Ryan, who's a free agent, not this year, but the end of next year. So I think he's going to be really hard to pry from the twins.
Starting point is 00:37:05 There is the Ryan Jeffers discussion, though, and catchers are at an absolute premium. I would say Joe Ryan's trade probability is less than, and it's so bad a percentage. I want this to come out as it's not likely. 30% or less. I think that's good, right?
Starting point is 00:37:31 Joe Ryan? If I think he's going to get traded, I do not think he's going to get traded. What's that? They almost traded him last year. Different ownership. Okay. I made a meme before.
Starting point is 00:37:48 I'm going to send it to Rob right now. Oh, no. you're going to love it that the problem with like Ryan Jeffers I think actually could be moved but the catching tandem has been really really tough
Starting point is 00:38:00 without him Victor Keratini and Alex Jackson that that would be interesting to go ahead move forward with those two guys as your catchers when you have Ryan Jeffers there so he's also a guy
Starting point is 00:38:13 that qualifying offer possibly for him if he finishes the year out well I want to okay let's do this do you think the twins should sell i do not okay because of what i said before they're trying to they're trying to win back to fan base bro and you don't you don't do that by trading your good players you just don't and you might have to bite the bullet and you might say oh shoot well we should have traded these guys and man that we we could have got some prospects out i don't I think that's their problem.
Starting point is 00:38:51 They got a lot of guys coming up. I mean, there's a chance they draft the catcher third overall in the draft this year. He's got Vaughn Lackey, who just won the Golden Spikes Award and is an absolute freaking stud. So I think they're doing okay as far as what do we got? That's my meme I made earlier. It's you and me talking to the new twins ownership group. Your little finger, I'm Lord Varies. Oh, I don't want to buy.
Starting point is 00:39:17 I don't want to buy. You got to sell, bro. if you're not selling you're buying no i don't think that's the kids doing buying buying is a relative term maybe you know maybe we make some moves for a bullpen piece or something like that but yeah i don't i don't know i just think it's the wrong time to do it in in the in where the franchise is that as far as fandom in minnesota man again we've talked and in this is not like inside information because tom paul has done interviews about this. Like he's trying. He wants the fans back. He wants
Starting point is 00:39:58 he wants people to like the twins and, you know, like his family again. You don't do that by trading away everyone after you just did basically had the red wedding last year with your bullpen and you're watching Louis Varland go and freaking be the best closer in all of baseball. You just don't do that again. You can't hit Joe Ryan's one of the only reasons to watch the twins right now. Go Ryan Buckson isn't going anywhere either He said he's said it a million times
Starting point is 00:40:26 He's got no trade clause So it ain't happening Let's get away from the Twins. Thank you That's my Twins take You're not I don't think we're ever great at rapid fire I think you and I like talking
Starting point is 00:40:41 But if we try doing a rapid fire Is this team gonna buy yourself? Okay Don't love it let it Let's do it Chicago White Sox I'm a buy Oh buy
Starting point is 00:40:52 Yeah Like easy buy, easy buy, nothing crazy. Yeah. I want them bringing in the purest of rentals. It either works or it doesn't, and that's it. I'm trying to think exactly where I would go with them. I think people think they need a starting pitcher to help, like, get through the seat. Depending on inning workload that they go through, which I think they might, yes.
Starting point is 00:41:19 I'm still high on these starting pitchers. I know that a couple of these guys have been getting beat up a little bit lately, but I think they have enough. Um, I'm, I'm a soft buy. Blue Jays. Bye. I think they're buying. I, I wouldn't, I've liked them for Sandy for a while now.
Starting point is 00:41:35 I, I, I think they're going to be in the mix. They're a game out of the wild card right now. Like, they still believe in what they're doing. Yeah. I think they're 100% at least try to buy. It doesn't always work out that way. It takes two to tango, but I would say buy and yes, I would say probably, um, everyone's going to be after starter.
Starting point is 00:41:53 So I don't think it's going to be easy to get these. guys, but it's going to be a pitcher, whether it is some guy in the bullpen as well, but it's going to be pitching, and I think they buy. Athletics? No. I think it's sell. Who do they sell? I think McNeil.
Starting point is 00:42:12 It could be a potential deadline guy. They just traded, you know who you need to be terrified of. Who do they just trade to the Brewers? What's his name? Gosh, he's with a K, like sidearm guy throws really hard. Oh, no. Yes, exactly. Numbers aren't great.
Starting point is 00:42:31 Yeah, exactly, dude. They just did it. I think it was for cash or a player to be named later, which is just, you're getting it up right now? Yeah, Coonel. Really? Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:42:48 Yeah, I saw him. He saved a game against the Yankees earlier this year. He's got some Brewers energy. He's got some Brewers energy, yeah. He looks like he's killed an animal before. Yeah, I think they're going to sell. I think you got Leo DeVries on the way. I think you're building up for Vegas.
Starting point is 00:43:05 I think their early season, energy is running out a little bit. Orioles Astros. Oriel's, I think, I'll give them a soft buy. Same speech I gave with the White Sox. And Astros, I think so. Ashtros actually could do both, but I think that sell is probably the more likely scenario.
Starting point is 00:43:36 And then Red Sox Royal. kind of rounds out the AL. I think the Royals are going to have to sell. And they're an interesting team we didn't really talk about. They're mentioned a lot in Passons article. If they sell their veterans starting pitchers, they might be able to get a nice little return for that. Or I know his value is not where it should be right now,
Starting point is 00:43:55 but Vinny P's got like that two years left range. Can you move Caglio to first? I know. I know. I don't like that one. I do think they end up soft selling some of the veteran pitcher Red Sox. Red Sox apparently are looking for a right-handed bat, but they can also move like a Jan Duran.
Starting point is 00:44:16 They do have a, they do have a ton of lefty hitters, especially in the outfield that I think they could probably do a little bit of both. Like Chapman, I actually hate to sell him, man. To be honest with you, maybe it's the right move. But like this guy is like he's one of the only reasons
Starting point is 00:44:33 you're winning baseball games because if you have the lead, he's going to close it out. Chapman back to the Cubbies. feeling like 2016 out here? Yeah, I think it's so interesting. I would say 100% sell for the Red Sox and just like, hey, like we had a really weird start to the year.
Starting point is 00:44:50 Like, let's just regroup for 2027. Like that's my initial take, but then you're hearing these rumors of their ownership looking for a right-handed bat, which, by the way, does not exist. They don't exist. So you're looking for something and good luck trying to find it,
Starting point is 00:45:05 but I actually would rather have them be in the cell category. I know. I know last episode we talked about ESOC Paredes a little bit if Houston decides to go that way. That guy would have a massive market right now. And yeah, I don't even to buy, sell you in the NL right now. I don't know. Nationals are going to be a funky team this year. You talk about a lot of change in that organization and like if a C.J. Abrams is actually available. I would, I'd much rather see the C.J. Abrams eight years
Starting point is 00:45:39 extension come out because I think that guy's amazing but they're going to be a weird one to talk about yeah CJ is an interesting one because we have we had like some of the off the field stuff that they probably didn't like last year but they bring in a new whole new coaching uh and hitting department in and they've really helped him out the bat speed is increased he's has career high numbers he's still very young I would I would be crazy for them to sell him right now unless there's stuff in the organization that I don't know about Right. Padres, Pirates and Diamondbacks are all in a weird party. Diamondbacks buy. I think, I truly think Diamondbacks buy.
Starting point is 00:46:16 You could tell Marte's stuff I'm not in on. Like, I think this team is pretty dang close to being like, I mean, easily a playoff team in the NL. They're in right now. They're in right now. Like, I don't want them to sell whatsoever. I think we could look for some bullpen stuff. I know there's, I know, I don't know if if Dalton put this in my head or I saw it somewhere else, like them trading for Chapman it would be amazing. I have them as a buy.
Starting point is 00:46:44 Who are the other teams you just mentioned right there? I mentioned the diamond, all next to each other in the standings right now. Diamondbacks, Padres, Pirates. Pirates are so interesting to me. Man, I mean, who do they have to sell? I don't really think they have anyone to sell. Unless you're saying like, hey,
Starting point is 00:47:06 we'll give up one of our young guys to go get scubel. no no you don't well that's interesting ain't it yeah it is uh i i have them more on the buy than sell for sure um maybe maybe a soft buy i kind of love that well that's what detroit would be majorly ready years of control pitchers and like it's like them the mariners have that um yeah The Pirates make the dance with skeins and scoble. Now that's what I was looking for, coach. Wow. Is that like a hot take or something?
Starting point is 00:47:51 I don't know. I don't think that's a hot take. I don't think they've been rumored for him. I mean, they had to move a young starter Maginsky to the bullpen because they have, they don't have room. And then Chandler's getting an opener now, so that's interesting. I would, it would be the most invested anyone's been in Pirates baseball since the early 90s.
Starting point is 00:48:19 100%. Like if you're looking at it just straight from like, hey, let's get eyeballs back on our team and like, hey, what we'd have to get Jared Jones to do it? I think you do it. That's tough. I did see that funny graphic of fastest, what was it, fastest 50 or 100 pitches by a starting pitcher this year. It's all Mizorowski. And then it's a handsome picture of Jared Jones. I know. He's such a stuff. I don't mean like I'd want to give them away flippantly, guys. I love it. Padres. Reds and Marlins, they're probably some. Honestly, I know we daydream this every episode.
Starting point is 00:48:59 Those two Marlins' middle infielderers, they've got, I think, two and a half years of control, and they just are ballplayers that if they somehow come available, I mean, like, they would technically be potentially the biggest player traded and people don't treat them that way. Position players, yes, they would be. Because of the years of control and yeah, and what they've been doing this year.
Starting point is 00:49:25 I mean, my goodness, at those two positions, it's very difficult to find offense at shortstop and second base. What else we got big? I mean, we just kind of ran the gambit there. Is there anything else you need to let out of your heart? I don't think we did a lot of Cubs talk. We didn't do a ton and it's scary, so you can.
Starting point is 00:49:46 I know, like, there also would love to get Terrick Scoobel. And what does that mean? Like, who would have to go back? Like, that's where I'm, like, just not good at when we're talking to trade scenarios. Like, okay, like, is Matt Shaw somebody that they can give up for him? And the Tigers, is that something they're interested in? But I think they would be looking for starting pitchers and impact this year starting pitchers. So there's that.
Starting point is 00:50:12 and then we didn't talk Freddie Peralta at all. We could talk Freddie Peralta. The Mets are still in an oddly weird place. They're playing decent ball. They're just about to get everyone back to. Like Francisco Alvarez just came back. Yeah. No, they're in a stretch.
Starting point is 00:50:34 It's a crazy amount of names like Lindor's lining up. I don't know. It's just tough to see. speak about them in any other way than what the Mets have been. Are they, I think they're losing right now, seven nothing to the card. There's also, there's also this aspect to, like we talked about a bunch of guys. There's also this aspect where teams are looking to capitalize on, like, a player's value. So you were talking about the Marlins, and we bring this guy up like a bunch just because he's
Starting point is 00:51:07 from Minnesota and it's fun. And he's had a really, really good year this year. What about a Max Meyer? if you're the Marlins, think about this. You know, he's got a ton of years of control. He's not afraid until 2030, but he's having a really, really good year this year. He's 27 years old.
Starting point is 00:51:24 I believe he's already had T.J. Yeah. So, when you take that, that's either good or bad depending on how you look at it. He already had it. So, okay. I feel like that's a guy, depending on the Marlins timeline,
Starting point is 00:51:37 you're like, I can see that happening. Like, I'm trying to capitalize on this guy's freaking highest market value, which I feel like that's what Peter Bendix probably thinks about. I haven't heard his name mentioned at all. Maybe for a good reason. Maybe I'm just stupid, but that's an interesting one for me. A guy with a ton of years of control. He's having a breakout year. Yeah, that's tricky because I don't know. I think Passon mentioned something like the Marlins think next year could be their year. So maybe... He had a 5, 6, 8 in 2024, a 4-7-3. in 2020 and
Starting point is 00:52:16 2025 and now he's broken out. The FIP doesn't help me either. It is if you're one of those people that just says we got to capitalize I see what you're saying. I mean it's on a very similar plane as kind of the Hunter Goodman stuff I gave before
Starting point is 00:52:33 like hey would if a team's willing to empty the chamber like hey you've got four legit prospects as a major league team and you're hoping one of them becomes good why don't you trade them for Hunter Goodman or Max Meyer, who's proven they can be good at the major league level. Again, this is a little bit of a daydream, but that's kind of what we do sometimes.
Starting point is 00:52:54 Today's episode is sponsored by Best Western Hotels and Resorts. See bonus points, terms and conditions and sweep rules for detail. I think we pretty much hit on everything. every single team. There's a Cleveland Guardians factor here. I never understand that organization.
Starting point is 00:53:51 So we'll see how that goes. I know they have a shortstop prospect only because I'm a Brian Rocchio stand. I know that they'd be willing to give them up because they got their infield set. Wow. Yeah. They got their infield set. So there's that. I don't know what they're going to do. Kind of never know what they're going to do. They're going to win baseball games, people. They're always looking for bats. I'll tell you that much. Here's a scenario that that Chris, Rose said to me and Padres fans, Ryan Cohen, just your mouse for you guys. Is there any way we get a Mason Miller trade? Not to Cleveland.
Starting point is 00:54:32 No, not to Cleveland. I'm talking Padres now, bro. Oh, okay. That was the whole Cleveland thing. I thought that was, I thought that was building. I told you, I don't know what to do with Cleveland. What do you do in Cleveland? They're looking for bats.
Starting point is 00:54:44 I don't know if there's bats out there to help them. No, that's fine. Yeah, I'm with you sadly. It feels like they run the same thing every year. It's driving Christmas. And everyone's looking for relievers. Everyone. Could the Padres trade Mason Mill?
Starting point is 00:55:01 Yeah. Like in any scenario. Yes. I mean, if the A's could last year. You just gave up the number one prospect in baseball for him. You gave up a guy. You'd have to get a guy back. So you're, I mean, basically,
Starting point is 00:55:19 the reasoning that Chris Rose gave. And it's, it makes you think. It's like maybe you got, not buyer's remorse because he's been so good, but maybe you're like, shit, like maybe let's go restock our farm and get,
Starting point is 00:55:32 get somebody like that back. Yeah, I don't, I don't think it's crazy. I, the Padres are always a little bit of a wild card. I, we could see them being the team that adds the most people at the deadline.
Starting point is 00:55:49 So I, I don't think it's, I don't think it's realistic. but I don't know if things really tailspin out of control. The other thing, we don't know how this new Padres has new ownership. Like are they going to be like, hey, if there's, what if you can trade Mason Miller in a bad contract and we can, let's get it next year? I don't know. Oh, that's such a great call because, you know, when you're looking at this team, that's what jumps out to me first and foremost is the length of some of these extensions they were given out.
Starting point is 00:56:21 Zander Bogart's... They're big numbers. Zander Bogartz and Mani Machado both run into... 2033, Jake. There's seven more years, and they're both about to be making absolute... Like, starting next year is when... For Bogart's, 25.4 all the way through. He's been making that every single year.
Starting point is 00:56:43 My gosh, this guy's rich. Dude, Bogart's is going to end up making 350... million dollars in his career. Yeah, man. Holy my goodness. And then Machado jumps up a ton this year as well. I think he's making 33, the rest of the way.
Starting point is 00:57:06 And you're saying Mason Miller plus a bad contract. Well, dude, and that's, Trev, I mean, Mason Miller doesn't let you move those guys. Those are... Well, I think the Padres would eat, and then you'd have to give up a big prospect package.
Starting point is 00:57:28 It's a, it's a, maybe it's not a great thing to talk about. Just Chris Rose put it in my head. You know what I said to him? No, they're not going to trade Mason Miller. No. Yeah, I don't. For me, I think there's, they are a team that's proved as long as they're around it, they're going to stay around it that I don't see.
Starting point is 00:57:47 And the guardians are quite the opposite. Yeah. Does anyone else? Cardinals flying blind, to be completely honest. They're saying most articles that are written about the Cardinals and trade deadline, people may be asking around whispers of the front office is any rent, not rentals, any, you know, veteran guys close to free agency, they're on the block. They're obviously keeping all the young kids. Angels, Joe Adele, Oswald Parraza, Logan O'Hoppy.
Starting point is 00:58:25 Come on. Why not? Don't say the name. Don't say it. I'm not saying his name. I will keep his name out my mouth. Everyone's thinking it. I don't say that name anymore.
Starting point is 00:58:43 Okay. So, all right, people. That was kind of juicy, huh? And because it's Wednesday, you know, we're sending you out with some fanatics markets. Look at the future of baseball markets presented by Fanatics Markets. Trev, we got a couple coming up for the people. people. Mariners Orioles. Aesthetically pleasing.
Starting point is 00:59:05 George Kirby is, especially when he's pitching at Camden, going against Young young Brandon Young. Yes, aesthetically pleasing, actually. Yeah. I like the juxtaposition of those jerseys. A Mariners on a heater right now, 10 and 3 in the last 13 games. And Brandon Young's actually really good in his last six starts with a 3-1-2. Young Brandon Young out of, went to Howard Fowler. and then University of Louise and Lafayette.
Starting point is 00:59:33 If you like the birds, they're trading at the right number right now. The other game we are looking at is Dodgers, Pirates. Oh, it's like we planned it. Shohei Otani is pitching against Jared Jones, baby. Jared Jones and his second start back, five innings pitch, zero, earned runs. That's fun. Well, first start, you know who you face, baby. My twins touched him up a little.
Starting point is 01:00:00 They love you, Jared. This has a potential to be quite the pitching matchup between Otani and Jared. He's coming throwing heat. We know what Otani's been doing on the bump. This is actually a fun one. And yes, this is also aesthetically pleasing. Fanatics markets available now in the app stores. Event contracts carry risk of total loss in changing prices.

Starting point is 01:00:57 I like that. Like, Alec Baum? Good looking, dude. You ain't Matt Chapman, Donald.
