Starting point is 00:00:00 Tim Walls is the Democrats' vice presidential nominee. I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Tuesday, August 6th. Vice President Kamala Harris chose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday morning. Harris said in a statement on X, as a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he's delivered for working families like his. Before he was elected governor in 2018, Wals served in the Army National Guard in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is popular with far-left Democrats like Nancy Pelosi, Bernie Sanders, and Pramila Jayapal, who came under fire in mid-July for calling Israel a racist state. Walls signed a bill last year, allowing illegal immigrants to receive Minnesota driver's licenses.
Starting point is 00:00:56 My colleague, Virginia Allen, covered that story. Virginia, can you tell us about this law? Yeah, great to be with you, Elizabeth. So, yes, back in March, 2023, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, he signed legislation that allows Minnesota residents to apply for a traditional driver's license regardless of their immigration status. So if someone was in the process of receiving a green card or they had some form of papers that under the Biden-Harris administration said they were allowed to be in this country, whether or not they were a U.S. citizen, they could apply for and receive a driver's license. And I did reach out to the Minnesota Department
Starting point is 00:01:32 of Public Safety and ask them, hey, is there anywhere on that driver's license that would denote whether someone is actually a legal U.S. citizen or not. And they said, no, all the driver's licenses will appear the same. And Walls has been very, very open about where he stands on the border during a recent interview with CNN in discussing Trump's border wall. He said, if it's 25 feet referring to the border wall, then all invest in the 30-foot ladder factory. So someone who's open about wanting immigration, but even further open to illegal immigration.
Starting point is 00:02:06 And then you also look at his background in regards to other policies that he's passed in this state. He has backed legislation to allow illegal aliens to receive free college tuition from state schools within Minnesota. And he has also supported legislation allowing illegal immigrants to enroll in Minnesota care, which is the state subsidized health care program. So someone who is very, very pro illegal immigration at the end of the day. Wow. And in January 2023, while it's also signed in time, law, a bill that includes no limitations on abortion. That's right. So Waltz issued an executive order ensuring that Minnesota children may be allowed to obtain irreversible transgender surgeries and sterilizing hormone treatments, which proponents call gender affirming care. Now, supporters said that
Starting point is 00:02:56 the measure made Minnesota a trans refuge state. Back in 2020, when rioters burned and looted the Minnesota cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul following the death of George Floyd, Walls waited days to act and express sympathy for anti-police rioters. The riots resulted in more than $500 million in damages to the Twin Cities area. Make sure you keep following the Daily Signal for more coverage on Walls. Thanks so much for joining us, Virginia. Great to be with you, Elizabeth. Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, said he thinks Kamala Harris chose Tim Walls over Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro because Shapiro is Jewish. Johnson said in an interview with the Hill, sadly, for Josh Shapiro, because of his heritage, I think that is the reason he was overlooked.
Starting point is 00:03:42 The Republican Speaker continued, I think that clearly was a major factor is that she was reluctant to put a vice presidential nominee on the ticket with Jewish heritage because they're having a split in the Democratic Party. They have a pro-Palestinian and in some cases pro-Hamas wing of the Democratic Party. Shapiro responded to Harris choosing walls by saying, Harris and her exceptionally strong VP pick had his enthusiastic support. Shapiro added that his work is far from finished in Pennsylvania. Senator Josh Hawley is urging the Secret Service to suspend the agent in charge of the Butler-Pensilvania rally where former President Donald Trump was shot. A whistleblower told the Missouri Republican lawmaker, the agent was inexperienced, ineffective,
Starting point is 00:04:26 and not up to the job. The whistleblower said that though the Secret Service agent had failed to implement basic security protocols, the end. individual has not been fired. Holly sent a letter to acting Secret Service Director Ronald Roe Jr. on Tuesday calling for the agent's suspension during the investigation. The agent in charge of the July 13th rally was new and had relatively little experience, the whistleblower told Holly. Elon Musk's social media platform X filed a lawsuit against advertisers for allegedly
Starting point is 00:04:58 violating antitrust laws and costing the company billions. X, which was formerly known as Twitter, sued the World Federation of Advertisors and Member Companies, Unilever, Mars, and CVS on Tuesday in a federal court in Texas. The lawsuit accuses the advertising group's initiative, the Global Alliance for Responsible Media, of coordinating a pause in advertising following Musk's purchase of X at the end of 2022. Ex-Chief Executive Linda Yakorino issued a statement on X. People are hurt when the marketplace of ideas is constricted. No small group of people should be able to monopolize what gets monetized.
Starting point is 00:05:39 The social media platform accused the Global Alliance for Responsible Media of a massive advertiser boycott.
