Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm Virginia Allen. And I'm John Pop. And this is the Daily Weekly Top News for Monday, January 23rd. Here are today's headlines. It is January after an election, which means that the House is busy determining committee assignments. Over the weekend, the Democrat House Minority Leader, Hakeem Jeffries, asked that both Democrat representatives Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell of California be added to the Intelligence Committee. Both Schiff and Swalwell have previously served on the Intelligence Committee.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Jeffrey says they are qualified for the position and should continue their service. But Republicans don't want them on the committee. And because of special rules associated with the Intelligence Committee, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has the power to decline members' request to sit on that specific committee. Punch Bowl News reported that McCarthy says he intends to deny Shift and SWCC. Swalwell's seats on the Intelligence Committee. According to Fox News, McCarthy says he will deny the request because Swalwell can't get a security clearance in the private sector, adding that I'm not going to give him a government security clearance. And when it comes to Schiff, McCarthy says that he has
Starting point is 00:01:28 lied too many times to the American public. Schiff was heavily involved as the lead House manager in President Trump's first impeachment trial. It is also likely the Republicans will vote to remove Democrat Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Controversity over committee nominations are not new. In the last Congress, Democrats and some Republicans voted to remove Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Green and Arizona Representative Paul Gosar from their committees. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the state has decided against offering a high school advance placement course on African American studies.
Starting point is 00:02:10 We want education, not indoctrination. DeSantis gave his remarks earlier today at a press conference in Jacksonville, Florida. He also said that the state curriculum requires the teaching of black history to all students, but the governor said the AP class goes far beyond just teaching black history or even critical race theory. I figured, yeah, they may be doing serious. It's way more than that. This course on black history, what's one of the lessons about queer theory?
Starting point is 00:02:40 Now, who would say that an important part of black history is queer theory? That is somebody pushing an agenda on our kids. And so when you look to see they have stuff about intersectionality, abolishing prisons, that's a political agenda. Some disagree with DeSantis, however. Christopher Tinson is the chair of the African American Studies Department at St. Louis University. He told NPR that there's nothing particularly ideological about the course of the except that we value the experience of African people in the United States.
Starting point is 00:03:15 But DeSantis says Florida believes in teaching kids facts and how to think, but does not believe kids should have an agenda imposed on them. If you watch Newsmax and have DirecTV listen up because this story is going to be of particular interest to you. Direct TV is considering cutting ties with Newsmax, and now Republican lawmakers are asking the TV provider to reconsider. Texas Republican Representative Wesley Hunt sent a letter to DirecTV asking them not to cut off tens of millions of viewers who rely on Newsmax for their news and information. Hunt added in the letter that while DirecTV will likely claim that removing newsmax from their lineup of channels was purely a business decision, that it is hard to accept when liberal news channels like Vice Media continue to remain on the air. Last April, DirecTV dropped the pro-Trump channel OANN. We will keep you all informed on this as this story continues to unfold.
Starting point is 00:04:19 We now have a possible motive in the shooting that took place over the weekend in Monterey Park, California. A man opened fire at a dance hall during a lunar New Year celebration. He shot and killed 11 people and injured at least nine others. Monterey Park Mayor Henry Lowe told NBC News that the suspect may have believed his ex-wife was at the New Year's celebration and was targeting her. There's reportedly history of domestic violence between the two. The ex-wife is alive. CNN reports that the couple met at the dance hall two decades ago
Starting point is 00:04:51 were married but filed for divorce in 2005. The protests outside the homes of Supreme Court justices are still going on. On Sunday night, a group called R. Rights, D.C., organized a protest outside the Maryland home of Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The protesters carried rainbow umbrellas decorated with pro-abortion slogans, singing and chanting as they marched. They chanted, cut his time short, a rapist should not rule the court. Freedom of religion means freedom from yours and no privacy for us, no peace for you. The Daily Signals, Mary Margaret Olahan, was on the scene and filmed the protesters.
Starting point is 00:05:34 Take a listen. Cut his time short, a rapist should not rule the court. Cut his time short. A rapist should not rule the court. U.S. Marshals were present guarding Kavanaugh's home, and the Daily Signal asked the Marshals why they allowed the protesters to continue their demonstrations when federal law forbids picketing or parading in or near a building or residence occupied by a judge or justice. Several of the Marshals told the Daily Signal that the protesters were not breaking the law because they were on the sidewalk and not on Kavanaugh's property.
Starting point is 00:06:11 But the Daily Signal pointed out that the language of the Code specifically says in or near a justice's residence. But the marshals, they still said that the activists were within the law since they were on the sidewalk. You can catch more of Mary Margaret's coverage of this protest on the Daily Signal's website and we'll be sure to link her piece in today's show notes. And that'll do it for today's episode.
