Thanks for joining us today. Make sure that you stick around for the end of today's show for some pretty big news here from The Daily Signal's Top News in 10.
A historic heated exchange between President Trump and President Zelenskyy played out in front of the world in the Oval Office today.
I'm Virginia Allen and this is the Daily Signal's Top News in 10 for Friday, February 28th.
Ukrainian President Volonimir Zelensky was at the White House today. He was there to meet with President Trump and sign up.
a mineral deal between the two countries. But things did not go as planned. It didn't take long
for the discussion between the two leaders to grow very tense. Of course, the source of that
tension was discussion over the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. President Trump urged
Zelensky to negotiate and warned him that failure to strike a deal with Russia could lead to
further escalation. You're not in a good position. You don't have the cards right now. With us,
start having cars. Right now you're playing cars. I'm very serious. You're playing cards. You're
gambling with the lives of millions of people. You're gambling with World War III. You're gambling with
World War III. And what you're doing is very disrespectful to the country, this country.
It's back to you. Far more than a lot of people said.
Vice President J.D. Vance was also in the Oval Office for the meeting and also challenged Zelensky,
even bringing up Zelensky's support of President Joe Biden.
You went to Pennsylvania and campaign for the opposition in October,
offer some words of appreciation for the United States of America,
and the president who's trying to save your country.
Please, you think that if you will speak very lonely about the more intense?
He's not speaking loud.
He's not speaking in loud.
Things then grew even more tense.
As Trump reminded Zelensky of the support,
the U.S. has already provided to Ukraine.
You're not winning.
You're not winning this.
You have a damn good chance of coming out okay because of us.
Mr. President, we are staying in our country, staying strong from the very beginning of the war.
We've been alone.
And we are thankful.
I said thanks.
You haven't been allowed.
You haven't been allowed.
We gave you, the stupid president, $350 billion.
You voted for your president.
We gave you military equipment.
You voted for your president.
And you've made a brave, but they have to use our military.
What about your president?
If you didn't have our military equipment, if you didn't have our military equipment, this war would have been over in doing it.
Trump told Zelensky he does not have the cards to negotiate.
The public and tourist exchange between the world leaders could indicate a coming end to the war,
but an end that does not include every provision that Ukraine is seeking.
After that tense meeting in the Oval Office, the White House announced that the joint press conference
that was supposed to take place between the two leaders had been canceled.
They also said that the signing of the mineral deal was off,
and Zelensky left the White House earlier than was originally scheduled.
Trump wrote on true social after the meeting,
President Zelensky is not ready for peace if America is involved,
because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations.
I don't want advantage. I want peace.
He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office.
He can come back when he is ready for peace.
Stay tuned.
Before that tense meeting at the White House, Vice President Vance spoke at the 20th National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C.
In his speech, Vant said Catholics might not agree with everything that President Trump does,
but said that Trump has been a great president for Catholics in America.
While you're certainly not always going to agree with everything that we do in President Trump's administration,
I feel very confident in saying that between protecting the rights of pro-life protesters,
between ensuring that we have an opportunity to protect the rights of the inborn and the first place,
and importantly, protecting the religious liberty of all people, but in particular Catholics,
I think that we can say that President Trump, though not a Catholic himself,
has been an incredibly good president for Catholics in the United States of America.
Vance also addressed the recent criticism from Pope Francis regarding Trump's immigration policies.
Vance expressed his respect for the Pope's perspective, stating, I was surprised by the Holy Father's remarks,
but I deeply respect his care for Christians worldwide.
Addressing the administration's stance on immigration, Vance defended the policies of the Trump administration
by referencing Catholic teachings on the order of love.
Vance said our approach prioritizes love for our own families and communities as guided by our faith.
Vance concluded by highlighting the administration's commitment to protecting religious liberties and supporting global Christian communities.
The Religious Liberty Legal Defense Organization Alliance Defending Freedom has launched an investigation into censorship of America's free speech within the United.
the government's science agency. That's according to reporting from the Daily
Sickle's own Elizabeth Mitchell. Specifically, Alliance Defending Freedom is investigating if the
National Science Foundation violated free speech. The legal group has sent two letters to the
National Science Foundation to disclose information related to its funding of tools that may
have been used to censor American speech and to provide information regarding its
cooperation with organizations to moderate online speech.
One of the pieces of information that Alliance Defending Freedom is seeking to learn is whether there was communication between personnel at the National Science Foundation and personnel at major social media platforms with respect to censor or suppress speech on those platforms.
Alliance Defending Freedom attorney Phil Satchler told the Daily Signal that the American people have a right to know if their tax dollars were used to create censorship tools to suppress.
certain voices and how involved state actors were and are in social media and online censorship.
You can read more of Elizabeth's reporting on this story by following the link in today's show notes.
Up next is today's newsflash.
Ella McKay, coming to theaters December 12th.
Your father's here. Why?
A heartwarming new comedy from James L. Brooks.
I'm a different person. I have never been my life felt this way about any other woman.
Jesus! I wasn't counting your mother!
It's a perfect holiday comedy about an imperfect family.
You can use a screen, Ella.
Starring Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, Camel Nanjani, Iowa Debrie with Albert Brooks and Woody Harrelson.
You should do that every afternoon.
Ella McKay.
President Trump signed an executive order today declaring English as the official language of the United States.
The president said the action unifies our nation under one language.
The order rescinds a man.
from former President Bill Clinton, they required federal agencies to provide language assistance
to non-English speakers.
You may recall that back in July of 2023, there was a bag of cocaine found in the White House.
President Trump said that he believes the cocaine belonged to either President Biden or his
son Hunter.
The president said he wants to find out the real story of who brought that cocaine into the White
House.
Finally today, we have a big announcement from Top News in 10.
If you joined the show yesterday, you heard part of that announcement that the Daily Signals,
Top News in 10 is transitioning, first off, to a morning news podcast, and it will have a video component,
and the new host is Tony Kennett, host of the Tony Kennett cast.
Tony joins me now.
Tony, thanks for being here.
Always a pleasure, Virginia, and a little bittersweet, knowing that,
I'm going to be the one shouldering this pack while you save the world with all of the articles you're going to be putting out.
We're all just saving the world one podcast and one article at a time here at the day of school.
Very humble doing it.
Indeed.
Well, share a little bit, Tony, if you would briefly just about your vision for Top News and Ten going forward.
Well, first of all, I want to make sure that those that are getting up in the morning, especially who aren't steeped in the bathwater of politics, are given just the headlines that they need with no fluff.
with no nonsense. They just get it all in top 10 minutes without all of the comfortable,
smooth NPR voice that is your alternative. And then they can take that. They can not worry
about being out of the loop. They can go do this stuff to keep this country moving, knowing that
we've got their back here in the nation's capital. I love it. Well, Tony, thank you. You have been
in the news game for quite a few years now. You have a very interesting journey into that
news game. You started as a teacher and then through a series of events, whether you kind of chose
it or not. You wound up in the crazy and wild world of reporting on the news and policy and
politics. You are based out in Indiana, which I think gives you a really great perspective,
not only as someone who follows everything that happens in Washington, D.C., but just as an American
who is constantly connecting with American people across the country on, hey, what do they
actually care about. So we are so excited to have you jumping in as the new host of Top News
in 10 for myself, Elizabeth Mitchell, Rob Lewy. It has just been the honor of our lives
to get to host this show. And it has been so fun, you might still occasionally, for all of our
listeners, be hearing us, join occasionally. If Tony will let us on, we'll see, we'll find out.
But maybe we'll sneak on once in a while. But you are not getting rid of us. You can still catch
all of our reporting at daily signal.com. But with that, Tony, we'll see you back here on Monday morning,
right? You know it bright and early. For those who are sludging through that morning drive
are going to be bringing you, God knows, no shortage of news over the weekend from the Hoosier
Heartland in Washington, D.C. for all of those out there who, you know, constitutionally carry.
I love it. I love it. Well, with that, that's going to do it for today's episode of the Daily
Signal's Top News in 10. Don't forget to hit that subscribe button. So you
never miss out on our brand new shows that will now be coming out in the AM. And of course,
Victor Davis Hansen's edition will still be coming out every afternoon. And if you have a second,
take a minute to let us know what you think about the show. Today's episode was produced by
John Pop. Have a wonderful weekend. See you right back here on Sunday for our interview edition.
