Starting point is 00:00:00 Trump says he's already done two debates and won't participate in a third. I'm Virginia Allen and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Friday, September 13th. Former President Donald Trump says that he will not debate Vice President Kamala Harris a second time. After the first debate, Kamala Harris and her campaign called for a second. Another debate. But Trump disagrees. Last night, he wrote on true social, there will be no third debate. At a campaign stop in Tucson yesterday, Trump reiterated this.
Starting point is 00:00:49 He said there will be no third debate. Too late anyway, the voting has already begun. Speaking at a press conference earlier today, Trump defended his decision of not doing another debate with Harris. I have debates with everybody. But the first debate, we had two debates. We didn't have one. First, I had Biden.
Starting point is 00:01:07 And he was 19 to 21 down. And they went, that's when they went. And they said, you can't win. You're going to get out. Democratic Governor Tim Walls of Minnesota and GOP Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio will debate each other on October 1st. So fear not if you're living for these debates during campaign season, you still have that one to look forward to. That will be hosted by CBS News in New York City. A bomb threat in Springfield, Ohio yesterday triggered the evacuation of City Hall,
Starting point is 00:01:39 local schools, and multiple other city buildings. The threat comes the same week that Springfield was thrust right into the center of the news, as former President Donald Trump claimed that illegal aliens are eating pets in Springfield. While there's no proof of this, it is true that Springfield has experienced a very large influx specifically of Haitian illegal aliens. It's estimated that as many as 20,000 illegal aliens have arrived in the city of Springfield, which has a population of about 58,000. The mayor of Springfield, Rob Rue, spoke to the Washington Post about that bomb threat. He told the post that the bomb threat used hateful language towards immigrants and Haitians in our community. The Post reports of the Trump campaign in a statement from Trump spokesperson,
Starting point is 00:02:29 Caroline Leavitt, and Vance's spokesman, Luke Schroeder, condemned Thursday's threat. They said that they believe those responsible should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Police directed three schools in Springfield to close or be evacuated today. The Springfield driver's exam station was also closed. According to the city, low living costs and job opportunities are what has led to the influx of illegal aliens into Springfield. Crime levels are up in the U.S. The latest data out from Crime Prevention Research Center has found that violent crime is up significantly within the past several years. The research organization is headed by economist and gun and crime expert Dr. John Lott.
Starting point is 00:03:15 He has been a guest actually on this show in the past. The Crime Prevention Research Center has released data that compares crime numbers under, specifically the Trump administration, to numbers under what we've seen during Biden's time in the White House. So between 2016 and 2020, total violent crime was reported to fall about 15% of, Under the Biden administration, it has been reported to rise 55%. The report specifically looked at three categories of crime, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.
Starting point is 00:03:49 Rapes were up 9% under the Trump administration and up 42% under Biden. Robbery was down 6% under Trump, but up 62% under Biden. Aggravated assault was down 24% under Trump and up 55% percent. percent under Biden. If you want to dig into all the numbers, you can check out today's show notes for a link to the full findings of that crime report. The Daily Wires, Matt Walsh, is out with a new film. The movie is called, Am I Racist? It was released in theaters today. It's similar in style to Walsh's last film, What is a Woman? For the film, Walsh conducted an interview with self-proclaimed critical race and social justice
Starting point is 00:04:34 educator Robin DeAngelo. DeAngelo is the author of White Fragility, Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Race. DeAngelo was not told the true nature of the project before she agreed to doing the interview, nor was she given Matt Walsh's real name. She was told that she was doing an interview for a film called Shades of Justice about efforts to address racism in the United States. When DeAngelo found out that her interview was in fact for Matt Walsh's film, Am I racist? She issued a response. In a long post on her website, DeAngelo writes, their deception was carefully planned and well funded. The website they had sent me was fake,
Starting point is 00:05:21 as were their identities, the project title used in the legal waiver, their description of the project, and the last name they gave for Matt. The interviewer was in fact Matt Walsh, a far-right provocateur backed by Shapiro and Daily Wire Plus, and yes, wearing a wig, referring to Matt Walsh, wearing a wig when he sat down to do that interview with DeAngelo. Well, DeAngelo cites in this long response to the interview within this movie, Am I Racist? She cites the Southern Poverty Law Center's summary of Walsh. The SPLC calls Walsh someone who promotes racist and anti-transgender conspiracy theories. DeAngelo concludes that the experience has reinforced for me how critically important it is to do in-depth background research before making yourself vulnerable to people you don't know or believing and sharing what you see online.
Starting point is 00:06:18 They will not prevail in their efforts to stop the work of racial justice, according to DeAngelo. While that film, once again, it is out today. Let's go ahead and roll a portion of the trailer. What is racism? Martin Luther King said not to judge people by the... Why was their king said a lot of stuff? Is America inherently racist? What the hell is that?
Starting point is 00:06:38 The word inherent is challenging there. America is racist to its bones. All of the... So inherently. Yeah. The entire system has to burn. And I'm not going to even use save this country. This country's not worth saving.
Starting point is 00:06:50 According to posts shared on Matt Walsh's X page today, at least one small theater in California has been pressured to cancel its showings of the film. If you want to find out where the movie movie is playing, and if it's playing in a theater near you, you can visit the website, miracist.com. This weekend is a good time to go to the theaters because not only is Am I Racist out in theaters right now, but also so is the Reagan movie. Dennis Quaid plays Reagan in this two-hour
Starting point is 00:07:21 and 15-minute film. The movie is rated PG-13, and it received 98% approval ratings by fans on Rotten Tomatoes, though it only got 18% approval rating from professional critics. So is this movie an accurate representation of Reagan's life and is it worth your time to go see? Well, The Daily Signal's copy editor Pete Perisi has seen the film. He joins us now to discuss. Pete, thanks for being with us on the show today. Well, thanks for having me. This being my podcast debut, I hope I pass the audition.
Starting point is 00:07:57 So far so good. We'll see how you do that one. Well, it's great to have you here. I know that you, Pete, are a huge fan of Reagan. So how exactly did Hollywood do? Did they portray him, do you think, accurately? Well, let me preface this by saying that I don't go to the movies much because, you know, 1450 a pop. So it has to be something I really want to see before I'll go, okay?
Starting point is 00:08:23 And so to answer your question, I like to law. It was really well done. Dennis Clay did a good job of maintaining the Reagan persona throughout. And, you know, not just his persona, but the voice pitch. And it must have required quite a good acting job to do that. Yeah. And I was very impressed. Did they tell a lot of Reagan's life as a whole, not just his time in the presidency?
Starting point is 00:08:50 Did they capture some of his early years? Oh, no. Yeah, absolutely. to his childhood, growing up in rural Illinois. So, yes, including getting into fights with bullies and such, not backing down. Yeah, a full picture. Now, Pete, I was really fascinated to see that this film has gotten some additional attention because while fans give it a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes,
Starting point is 00:09:19 the critics are only giving it 18% approval. Why do you think that is? Well, here's a thing. The people who would go to the movie, it's almost the case of self-selection. 98% rating, you're not going to go to something you're probably not going to like, okay? As far as the critics are concerned, that doesn't surprise me at all because, I mean, the critics obviously skewed of the left. I'm sure they were not as harshly critical of the Ruf Bader Ginsburg biography film as they were of this. I'm not sure why the right seated Hollywood to the left because it wasn't always so.
Starting point is 00:10:00 Yeah, that's true. I mean, gosh, Reagan himself was in Hollywood for a while. So interesting to see how things have indeed shifted and quite dramatically. But Pete, thank you for your time this Friday. And for anyone who's going to see either the Reagan film or am I racist this weekend, let us know what you think on social media. We'd love to hear your feedback. But Pete really appreciate it and well done on your podcast debut here this Friday on the Daily Signal Podcast.
