Does a tent beat an RV? Are Saskatchewanians the toughest Canadians?
00:00Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Georgetown invites you to a quiet and compassionate free seminar on supporting those who struggle with substance use.On Saturday, September 12 at 10 in the morning, we will gather to listen, to learn, and to offer hope.Robin Griller of St. Michael's Holmes and Reverend Robert Crestick Lutheran Church, Canada will share gentle guidance on medical, practical, and spiritual care.If you are someone you love is seeking understanding, please call to register 437-297-0056.This is a CBC podcast.Hey, Canada, do comedies into house. From Regina Saskatchewan, home of government house. It's the dip.
00:44It's the winner. Now here's a man whose government meant to make you laugh. We are coming to you for the first time in a long watch.Just Saskatchewan.Regina is a city with its own unique style. In fact, you have a kind of pizza here called Regina-style pizza, which I thought meant you could see the delivery driver coming from several.kilometers away.
01:33It turns out that you make a unique pizza pie.You cover a doughy crust in sauce and then add layerupon layer of cheese and toppings so it's thick like alasagna and then you bake it and slice it intofour inch squares. And then afterwards, if you eat that, you're so full, you roll home like a prairie tumbleweed. It is time now to meet two debaters who we think
01:58are a real slice. This comic wasterrified of sitting on Santa's lap growing up because he was claustrophobic. It's Vancouver's Gavin Clarkson.Gavin Clarkson striding to cross the stage purposely to my left, wearing an adventuroushat.Hi, Gavin.Hello, Steve. Welcome back, my friend.Thank you.
02:22And this comic's successful strategy to join a community garden was the result of a well-thought-outplot. It's Vancouver'sYumi Nagashima.Hi, Yumi. How you doing?Debaters, your topic is one thathas two camps. Tents. Are they superior toRVs? I'm happy
02:51we're debating this because one timeon the show we debated the awesomeness ofHawkins' cheesies. And they were so thrilled. They were so thrilled. They sent our wholestaff a bunch of Cheezys for free.So let me.me be very clear here, regardless of how this debate plays out, I love Winnebago's. I love them,
03:15especially top of the line, Winnebago's, silver with red trim. But I'm more likely to get a previouslyenjoyed tent. Those are nice, too. So now it's time for a debate that will be campgrounds for concern.Whereas it provides a more authentic experience of the great outdoors, be it resolved when it comes tocamping, a tent is superior to an RV. Gavin, you are arguing for this, please. You have two minutes.Starting now, Gavin Clarkson. Thank you, Steve. Let's drop the pretense and go full pro-tents.RVs suck. They are expensive, limiting, and wasteful. My tent costs $150, and I've had it for years. I can take it anywherethat I want to go.Is it comfortable?
04:11Good Lord, no.But is an RV$150,000 morecomfortable? Also no.And you think, surely, spending that kind of moneywould get you of something
04:27quality, right?Wrong.Because even the most expensivepremier RV is somehowbuilt with a kind ofsawdust-to-glue ratiothat would embarrassIKEA. But not to worry, because you're not going to be in there much anyway. It's only an RV
04:45for maybe 2% of the year. For the other 98% of the year, it's just a driveway algae farm.Building up that fine green patina of mold and mildew for you to breathe in on your nextfresh air outing. Honestly, RV might as well stand for respiratory virus. And sure, you get to bring the comforts of home with you,but you also bring the problems of home. You know what I've never needed to do when camping with my tent?Call a plumber. But again, you'll never need a plumber either,
05:36because anyone who's been in an RVknows that the sinks and bathrooms are purely ornamental. There are two things you hear when you first enter someone's RV.Please take off your shoes, and, oh, we don't use that. But tents, ah,they're cheap and they're simple. The thinnest possible barrier
06:01between you and Mother Nature. And baby, it just feels better that way.And tents are just way more fun than RVs.RVs require this huge commitment of time and money. They're so needy and expensive.Tents are the complete opposite. They're a low-commitment flingthat just says,
06:30sip down my fly and come inside.Look, I'm just saying,if you need a full kitchen,king-sized bed,couch, plumbing, and Wi-Fito enjoy nature,here's a little secret.You don't enjoy nature.
07:00And that's okay.Just do something you,and everyone with you will enjoy more.Stay home.Thank you.Yeah! It's pro tense with no freeThank you, Gavin.
07:20Now, here to get things rolling in favor of RVs.It's the one and only, Yumi Nagashiba.Hello, beautiful people in Regina. In Japan, camping isn't very common. If you lie down outside, someone thinks you're waiting for a train.Too dark? Then I moved to Canada. And my husband introduced me to camping.
08:04It blew my mind.I was like, wow, this is what happens when a country has land.Fresh air, open skies, endless stars. These are rare in Tokyo. But the excitement lasted one day because I slept in a tent.Apparently, every rock in Canada was directly under my body.So next time, we rented an RV.And suddenly, I understood why people love camping.
08:56Human evolution spent hundreds of thousands of yearstrying to get us off the ground.Arvies are the pinnacle of human achievement.I introduced tent camping to my Japanese friends recently.I thought we would bond around the campfire, but instead we spent two hours setting up tentsand having separate emotional breakdowns. With an RV, you spent more time enjoying people and nature
09:47and less time small wrestling fabric.Because RV stands for a lot of people.for recreational vehicle.Happiness is our birthright.Thank you.Yeah.Yumi Nagoshima, on behalf of RVs.We've got ourselves a debate.
10:15It is time now for what we call the bare-knuckle round. We're debating tents versus RVs.So let's go at this with intent.Go ahead and a-frame your argument.Think on the fly.And things should go off without a hitch, provided you don't use any propane language.Don't bear spray it, starting now.
10:49Yumi, I struggle to understand how you had so much troublesetting up a tent and taking it down and putting it back together. You're from Japan, the world champions of neatly folding things.Oh, Gavin.I did my best, but it kept turning into a crane. You love tents, but have you ever been to a circus tent? There are so many clowns.Of course, I've been to a circus.
11:38Circuses are fun.I would much rather be at the circus in a tent than at the trailer park. What are you talking?Look, I'm sorry you had a bad camping experience.I think you and your husband just need to communicate. You know what I mean?Like, he certainly wouldn't be the first manwho went out to get an expensive vehicle
12:04after struggling to pitch a tent.Okay, we're going to stop it there. That's the bare-knuckle round. It is time now for the firing line.In my hand, I have a list of questionson tents versus RVs, brought to you bythe preferred cocktail of people who don't camp in tents.RV wallbangers.
12:29Thank you.Diamond Lure Campground says that compared to RVs,tent camping is simpler, less expensive, and also what?Yumi. The leading cause of insomnia.Good point.Good point for that. Gavin?More intense.
12:53See?See?Many shows might frown on that, but that's three points.Three points for you like that.Diamond Lure Campground says, compared to RVs,tent camping is simpler, less expensive, and closer to nature. We would also have accepted easier to fold.K-O-A campgrounds says for optimum RV trips follow the 33-3 rule.
13:22Drive no more than 300 miles, arrive by 3 p.m., and what else?Yumi.Spend no more than three minutes setting up camp.Good. That's three points for you.Gavin Clarkson.Three beers before backing her up.Pretty good, buddy.Three points.
13:49The 3-33 rule isdrive no more than 300 miles, arrive by 3 p.m.And stay at least three nights.Or have at least three childrento do all the camp chores.Regina's Buffalo Lookout Campgroundand RV parks
14:07as it features clean bathrooms, free showers, and Wi-Fi,and is located just, four minutes from what? You mean? The good part of Regina. For the radiolisteners, she did air quotes there.
14:28The actual answer,it's located just four minutes fromCostco. What? A greatcampground that would be.IslandrV Guide.comsays RVs are known bydifferent names around the world, including
14:48camper or caravan in Italyand the Netherlands, and inIt's called what?Gavin?A dirty American invention. Was that your French accent? Was that the French accent?Best I could do.
15:09Two points for trying, I guess.Yumi?A wine cellar on wheels.A wine cellar on wheels. And again, she sold it with hand gestures.I will give you a point. In France, it's called a camping car.Or if you took in elementary school French of the 80s,
15:34LaVauture de la camp. What does RVShare.com suggest is one good wayto help pay for the cost of your RV.Gavin?Cook meth in it.What the heck?Four and a half points, Gavin. The actual answer,
16:02one good way to help pay for the cost of your RV,is rented out to otherswhen you're not using it.it.That sounds fun.And that is the firing line, everybody. We are debatingcamping intents
16:20versus RVs, and it's almosttime for our Regina Performing ArtsCenter audience to place their votes. But first, here with a hard-drivingargument in support of RVs,let's hear again from YumiNagashima.RVs
16:39gave us the RobinWilliams movie RV.Tents gave us the movie, Deliverance. An RV, you don't have to hang your food in a tree at night.Animals can't open RV doors. To wildlife, a person sleeping in a tent is basically a wrapped salami sandwich.Be honest, we are in Regina. In this Saskatchewan wind, a tent isn't shelter.
17:31It is a very expensive kite. That's why I am Team RV.Thank you.Yumi Nagoshima, with a fantastic closing argumenton behalf of RVs versus tent. Now, before things get two tents, here with a tent-pull argumentthat supports his side of the debate.
18:09Let's hear one more time from Gavin Clarkson. If you have an RV,I understand what you're trying to capture. It seems not long ago everyone had a family member with a cottage or a cabin where you would all gather and have all the comforts of home in a still rustic natural space where you made some of your favorite memories. It's a sad and hard reality that for most of us, that kind of property is just no longer attainable. And you're trying to recapture that childhood memory with RVs, but we know deep down it's a poor alternative. And honestly, with the way things are going for Canada's middle class, the faster you learn to be comfortable in a tent, the better.
18:58Thank you.Gavin Clarkson, on behalf of tents, some sobering thoughts, but still funny. All right, thanks, Gavin. All right, audience, it is up to you to decide who wins. It's time to vote.By applause, who thinks Gavin deserves his own.own tent talk. Gavin Clarkson. Support here in Regina for Gavin. And how many people thought
19:36Yumi kept her foot on the gas the whole way with their pro RV. It's almost too close tocall, but I'm calling it. Yumi Nagashima, RVs over tent. Big hand for Yumi Nagashima and the greatGavin Clarkson, everybody. Hey, debaters, listeners. Well, there's no debating it. We'd love it if youcould hit the follow button on our podcast. That way, you won't.won't miss an episode. And if you already follow us, thank you.Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Georgetown invites you to a quiet and compassionate free seminaron supporting those who struggle with substance use. On Saturday, September 12th at 10in the morning, we will gather to listen, to learn, and to offer hope. Robin Griller of St. Michael's
20:27Holmes and Reverend Robert Crestick Lutheran Church, Canada will share gentle guidance on medical, practical, and spiritual care. If you are someone you love is seeking understanding, please call to register 437-297-0056.Hey Regina, are you ready to meet your next pair of debaters?Crowd Canada! This comic writes his reviews of romantic dramas in The Notebook he carries with him. It's Vancouver's Miles Anderson.Come on out, Miles Anderson, looking ready and festive.
21:07As always.Hello.Hello, my friend. And this comic calmly pulls the tape out of old video cassettes to relax and unwind. It's Prince Albert, Saskatchewan's Kelly Taylor.Writing across the stage in a magnificent shirt.Your topic is one that if you don't like it, well, tough. Are the toughest Canadians from right here in Saskatchewan?
21:42Listen to that, Canada.I'll tell you this, those who are listening. This is one tough look at.public radio-supporting crowd here tonightat the Regina Performing Arts Center. Some people have their reading glasses on steel chainsaround their tattooed necks. This crowd might think they're tougher
22:05than listeners in other provinces, but let me tell you, tough reginans. Our listeners all over Canada are not afraid. All right? They are tough. They will handwrite a letter. So watch yourself.Time now for a debate that we're determined to tough out.So, whereas its residents navigate challenges such as extreme temperatures, isolation, and hard labor,
22:32be it resolved that toughest Canadians come from Saskatchewan.Kelly, you are arguing for this, please, my friend. You have two minutes, starting now.Kelly Taylor!Miles, I know you're from Vancouver, where roughing it means the oat milk ran out of your coffee shop.Vancouver, you play football in a dome.We play outside in minus 30 weather, and we use a wet watermelon to keep us warm.
23:08You guys everywhere else in Canada, they wear hoodies.Sounds gangster. You know how tough you have to beto tell everyone you wear a bunny hug?Last call everywhere else in this countrymeans you can get your last drink. In Saskatchewan, last call means
23:35let's start fighting. We come from farmers. You ever shake a farmer's hand? It's like putting your hand in a vice grip.My grandpa has 26 grit sandpaper hands.Farmers come from big families. We have 12.My wife, 12 on that side.
23:58You ever try to fight a brother 10 years older than you?Your mom just sends you downstairs?Hey, mom, I don't want to fight my brother who's 17.I'm six years old.You get hand-me-downs.They're not good. You ever go to school with your sister's halter top on?Gordie Howe from Floral, Saskatchewan.
24:26There's a term named after Gordy Howe hat trick.A goal, an assist, and a fight.A Vancouver hat trick is yoga, vaping, and wearing a helmet for everything you do.I'm a celiac living in a thing.in Saskatchewan. Do you know how tough that is?The land of wheat.Your choices for eating are not eating or crapping your pants.
25:09More young people leave this province than anywhere in Canada. That leaves our seniors to work. You know how tough it is to get your weight outside the drive-thrufor your 90-year-old to bring your chicken nuggets?Sorry, I was late. Just got my new hip.Thank you, Steve.Gally Taylor, Prince Albert's own, arguing that people from Saskatchewan
25:38are the toughest people in the country.I don't know what a bunny hug is, but they all got it.Oh, they got it.Don't worry, we'll have a Vico after and discuss it.I don't know.I don't know.I don't know, but as long as they like it.Yeah.
25:56Now, here to assure you that debating,Saskatchewanians as being the toughest Canadians is just the weakest argument. His words, not mine. It's Miles Anderson.Thank you very much.Kelly, you are very brave.I would never claim that the toughest Canadians come from Saskatchewan.I'm afraid that if I did, somebody from Manitoba would stab me.
26:33Saskatchewan does have extreme temperatures, but lately all the provinces do.for some reason nobody really knows for sure.Do your own research, I guess.Saskatchewan is not the most isolated province. That would be Newfoundland.Newfis are part of Canada, but they can't communicate with usbecause they speak an unknown dialect of English.
27:01You can probably tell from my accentthat I am from British Columbia.BC is far tougher than Saskatchewan. You think you work hard in Saskatchewan. My doctor delivers Uber Eats betweensurgeries to afford her two-bedroom condo in Vancouver. Some Albertans are so tough, they think they can form their own country.Imagine being so confident that you think you could just hang out next to America all alone,
27:39full of oil.Have fun with that.Northern Saskatchewan is rugged and tough people do live there. But the territories north of northern Saskatchewan would eat them from.for breakfast. French Canadians are tough because they're constantly getting into fightswith the English, the French and French Canadians. Ontarioians are tough. In Toronto, rush houris every hour, every day, forever. Thank you. Miles Anderson, arguing against Saskatchewanbeing the toughest Canadians. This, I just want to say, Kelly, before.
28:38before we start this next round, that it's named figuratively.Okay? It's time now for the bare-knuckle round. We're debating whether Saskatchewaniansare the toughest Canadians. So since you're both swift, current comics, outstanding in your field,
29:01it's time to weigh burn your opponent.Give them a verbal punch in the moose jaw.A kick right in the camsack. And a boot in the Brett Butt. But it's time to win this Battleford, starting now.You complain about your doctor.Well, guess what, Miles? We have the same doctor.
29:32There is no doctors here.My next appointment for MRI is in 11 years in Vancouver. You say Saskatchewan is tough because it has farms. There's actually also farms in BC,and you actually have to farm uphill there.Well, when I was a kid in Saskatchewan growing up,My parents made me walk to school barefoot in blizzards, dead flat both ways. You made fun of Vancouverites being gluten-free.
30:18That's a little bit of a dated reference. We actually cured celiac with macho lattes.Miles, if you think Saskatchewan is so weak, why don't you have a little Saskatchewan dessert? It's called Copenhagen.Miles, do you like to come over here for a little Saskatchewan dessert?I don't want your weird Danish poison.Okay, we're going to stop the bear and I'll go around right there.
30:44Kelly pulled out the chewing tobacco, and Miles recoiled. That's what you need to know. You wouldn't share. It's very expensive. It's time now for the firing line.In my hand, I have a list of questions on people from Saskatchewan being the toughest, brought to you by the provincial bird of Saskatchewan, the sharp-tailed grouse.Way tougher. Then the blunt-tailed grouse.
31:14During the Great Depression,Saskatchewanians, who could no longer afford gasoline or car repairs, adapted by doing what?Miles?Anything but walk.I mean, you'll hear the answer, and it's not that far off.
31:34Kelly Taylor. That's how the city of Prince Albert came to be.The car's just broke, and they had no gas, and they started a city.He can say that. He's from Prince Albert.People adapted by removing the engineand having a horse pull their car,
31:55which came to be called a Bennett buggy.Oh, still doing that in Imperial, Saskatchewan.Gas prices now.I might get my dog at home to take one for the team.Saskatchewan's motto ismulticee gentibusviris, a Latin phrasethat translates to what?
32:20Kelly?Multiple gentle virus.Genital virus. Yeah, multiple genital virus.Yeah, that's it.I remember learning that.Yeah.Okay.All right.
32:31For sure.I enjoyed watching the thought process.No.From many people's strength. From many people'sstrength. We also would have acceptedwe also would have acceptedsuck it, blue bombers.
32:59Saskatchewan'sJackie O'Shebsky has wonWestern Canada's strongest womanthree times and done whatfour times? Been treatedfor multiple genital virus.Oh,you wouldn't say that to her face.
33:21He's not here, is she? It's all right.I'm going to find out.Miles?Skipped leg day. That's a good guess. She has won Western Canada's strongest woman three timesand placed second in strongest woman in the world four times.
33:44Amazing.According to Canadian Football History.C.A.,the origin of the team name Rough Riders likely refers to what?Miles?an uncomfortable riding experience. So stupid, so stupid, but delivered so brilliantly. And for those listening, yes, he looks exactly like that.Kelly Taylor.
34:27A rough rider comes from the term of a bad whiskey barrelbecause you're like, that's a rough rider.Three points each.Three points each on that one.Two real field goals on that one.The origin of the team name Rough Riders likely refers to breaking wild horses on the prairies. We also would have accepted flying around in the flatbed of your dad's truck. And that is the firing line, everybody.
35:05Well, we are cruising right along, and it's almost time for our Regina Performing Arts Center audience to vote. But first, here again to prove to us that when the going gets tough, the tough get going, far away from Saskatchewan.Let's hear from Miles Anderson. Some of you might question my ability to judge toughness. It's true.I am not very tough.I cover my ears when an ambulance drives by.Even when the sirens aren't on, I find the engine is too loud and aggressive.
35:57But I have read books about toughness.I have listened to radio plays about sturdy pioneers. And I've concluded that toughness is overrated. It is far better to be soft and soft.funny than tough and stoic.Tough people need to always prove their toughness. It's exhausting. If people accuse me of being soft, I just giggle,
36:30agree with them, and go back to my needlework. No, Saskatchewan doesn't produce the toughest Canadians.I think you guys are actually pretty cool.Thank you.Yeah.Miles Anderson.Miles Anderson with a great argument.Thank you, Miles.
37:04Now, expanding on how even resilientSaskatchewan kids will only sing abouttough the magic dragon.Let's hear from Kelly Taylor. You know what you get when you Googletoughest sports team ever? You get NHL Tough guys from SAS.Kelly Chase, Joey Kosher,
37:29Carrie Clark, Wendell Clark,Barry Melville.killer Kaminsky and two farmers and that was a Saskatchewan softball teamyou ever been to a sask pit party the only place you can get laid getting a fight burntby a fire eaten alive by mosquitoes frostbite with no clue how you're getting homein vancouver and toronto they think they're saving the environment byriding their bicycles all over the place.Adults on bicycles.
38:10If you see an adult on a bicycle in Saskatchew and you're like, hey, that guy got a DUI.Thank you.Kelly Taylor.Oh.The rest of Canada is laughing like you've made this up.But the audience here is nodding. That's a real softball team.
38:38I believe you.I believe you.All right, Saskatchew, it's time to vote by applause.Who agreed with Milesthat for Saskatchewanians to learn they're not that toughmight be a tough pill to swallow, Miles Anderson? That's what's known in the business as polite applause. And who agreed with Kelly's claim that Saskatchewanians are the toughest act to follow,
39:07Kelly Dallas, toughest Canadians.Big hand for Kelly.Well, that's all for this week.I'm Steve Patterson saying thanks to the good people of Saskatchewanfor not being too tough a crowd for us.I'll argue with you again soon, Canada.Good night. The Debaters is created by Richard Side.
