hit your 2019 New Year's resolutions, send me an email rob at robdial.com. Okay, you ready? Here we go.
We have been raised to be sheep, to follow the leader and listen.
And it all starts with our school system.
We take a child with this amazing desire to play and to have fun and to create
and use their imagination that they have, and we put them into a box.
And we tell them, you have to go to kindergarten and be a good kid in kindergarten.
And if you're a good kid, we'll put you into first grade.
And then when you get into first grade, make sure that you do really well so that you can get into second grade.
And then you're told to get good grades throughout grade school because then you'll get into high school.
And make sure that you get those good grades in high school so that you can be accepted to a good college.
Because you want can be accepted to a good college because you
want to be accepted. And if you don't have enough money to pay for college, no worries.
Borrow some money and spend the next 20 years paying it back and then get good grades in college
so that you can get a good job. And then what happens? You get that job, right? And you say,
ah, I've made it, right? No, of course not.
Now you have to make sure to hit that quota
and to work really hard
so that you can get that next promotion
and work your way up the corporate ladder
because it's coming.
It's coming, this great thing,
that success that you've been working
towards your entire life, it's coming.
And then you get to 40 years old
and you say, ah, I've made it, right?
No, damn, When will it come?
When will this success that we've been waiting for come? And that's why we have the phrase
midlife crisis because people wake up at 40 and think, what the F have I been doing with my entire
life? I've been following a system that was laid out for me. And it wasn't even a system that I,
following a system that was laid out for me.
And it wasn't even the system that I,
it wasn't what I wanted to do.
And that thought of wasting some of the best years of the one life that you get
could drive anybody to a nervous breakdown.
So we've been taught to shoot for this imaginary target
that's just like the horizon.
The closer that we get to it,
the further away it gets from us.
And you're supposed to save, save, save, save for retirement
because those will be the good old days.
And then one day we can retire at 65
with all the money that we've been saving.
And then by then we're too tired to do all of the traveling
and have all of the fun we've been wanting to do our entire lives.
So what do we do then?
Just hope that we can live as long as possible
and try to enjoy the last part of our
lives? Rot in some senior citizen community maybe? See, if we've done that, then we've cheated
ourselves throughout our entire lives. See, that's why it doesn't make sense when someone says the
point of life is to enjoy the journey. Because a journey means that you are going towards a
destination, an endpoint, that success, that thing that we are working towards that's supposed to have some serious purpose at the end.
But we miss the point all along the way.
Life is supposed to be like music, not like a journey.
The point of music is not to get to the end, to get to that final note.
The point of music is to enjoy each note as long as we can.
That's why if you're listening to your favorite song, I feel like you could just
melt into that favorite song when you listen to it because it pulls you
aggressively into the present moment. No one's ever been to a great concert and thought,
I can't wait for the last note. The point is to be present and to extend that present moment as long as we can
and to sing and to dance while the music is being played. So don't continue to live your life in
search of this end goal, in search of this success. That's not the point of life. The point is to enjoy
the present moment because right now you are the youngest
that you will ever be from here forward.
So enjoy the moment.
Enjoy the music.
And sing and dance along if you want to.
So that's it for today's episode.
