01:08Guys, I want to get back out on the lake.Well, you do live right on Lake Ontario.Okay, fair point. But I'm thinking I'd like to plan a trip to Colonain British Columbia.Oh, yeah, solid choice. We found a great place on Airbnb near Lakeshore Road.Going to check out the restaurants, the coffee shops,
01:27definitely got to visit the winery. It sounds like the whole trip's built around snacks and drinks. As it should be.But it got me thinking, while we're out there, our place back home is just sitting empty. So you're going to list your space on Airbnb while you're gone? Why not? They can come to my neighborhood and live like a local. My favorite Mexican places close by, we've got some amazing parks and waterfront to explore.
01:53There's even drop in wreck hockey just down the street.Plus a little extra cash in your pocket for the next trip.Exactly. It just makes sense.Your home might be worth more than you think.Find out how much at Airbnb.ca slash host.Spank Eddie.S. D.P.
02:11The Steve Dangle podcast with your host, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake.Let's go!You know, I heard a story from a friend of mine oncethat is not going to make sense until I finish the story. But this is how I want to start the show today.Okay?First off, this one.part actually will.
02:29CJ's show today.Watch it.It's out.And it's really good. And it has a few elements of what we're going to talk about in this show as well.It is really good. But the shame of it is it's only six minutes and 36 seconds long.So I had a friend and he attended a concert with two notable bands in the 80s.
02:48Got it.One of them, it was in Toronto. One of them was a band called Kiss.Okay.Another band in that was White Snake.White Snake, you know, here I go again.Again on my own, Kiss, obviously, Detroit, Rock City, whatever. So it was here in Toronto at Exhibition Stadium, and White, basically, Kiss had to open.
03:09And so towards the end of the set, as the sun is going down because this is outside,Gene Simmons said, Toronto, we wanted to bring you the lights. We wanted to bring you the fireworks. And the fans are just going crazy because Kiss is known for their live shows.I don't know if you've ever seen.I'm surprised they opened.Well, you've hit on it, Steve.Oh.
03:33Because Kiss is known for starting a live show coming down from the top of the stage on three different pieces as they all kind of run.Like it's just, it's incredible, right? That's what they're known for. They were always a big live show. They said, we wanted to bring you the lights. We wanted to bring you the fireworks. We wanted to bring you the energy. But White Snake wouldn't let us.
03:54What?Because what happens is when you're the act that's close, and you've got all the big hits, which they were the big band at the time.White Snake, you know, Kiss was a legacy band at that point. They'd been out for 15 years.White Snake was like top of the charts. They said that on stage. They said that on stage.
04:11And White Snake came out and they got pelted with beer bottles and booed. And, you know, I think it's because people were like, well, it's Kiss. This is an opportunity to see Kiss at their best. And you wouldn't let them put the fireworks and the lights out and everything. And they got booed. That happens all the time or happened all the time.Typical Toronto toxic audience, by the.100%.
04:32Driving the artist out. Now, you have to wonder if White Snake will stop signing in Toronto.Today, we wanted to bring you the lights.Austin Matthews leaping grab at the blue line.Yes.Grabbing a puck, keeping it in, creating a goal.Six goals and six games.Every part of that was impressive.
04:52We wanted to bring you the fireworks,Carrill Marchenko, the day after saying, you know I could be betterskating backwards into the netfiring a shot through his legsbackwards, top cheddaron UPL, one of the better goalies in the league.Nasty as goal.
05:09Okay.We could even have talked about smaller stuff. We could have talked about Tavares.Injury.That's scary. It is.We could have talked about the factthat the savers had two wins
05:19in their last 18without Dahlene. The fact that it waswithout.Without Dahlene. We could have talked about Miles Wood going on IR.That's strange. We thought he was injured.
05:33Then he practiced in Utah. Now he's on IR again. That is interesting.Do we have another Robidot participant? This is a good question.Well, maybe it would make sense if there was another move.Like a trade that the Leafs made immediately prior to the game?Yeah.
05:48We could have talked about that too. We'll get a little bit into that. But unfortunately, instead of all that,we got to talk about the head coach. Now, eight games.Gavin McKenna played six minutes and 30 seconds last night. And Jim Hiller's response was, I forgot to play him.Jesse, we're going to have more from your press conference on him.
06:07Steve, we're going to have more from your LFR on him.But let's jump off of something Steve brought to his LFR last night.Songs that are longer than what Gavin McKenna played last night. You said Bohemian Rhapsody somewhere in the 550s.Bohemian Rhapsody is a little shorter.Freebird is significantly longer.Freebird is nine minutes long.Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley, also longer than what everybody knows, Hallelujah.
06:31Us and Them by Pink Floyd, one of the biggest hits of the 70s.Stairway to Heaven is longer.November rain from Guns and Roses is longer. And Hey Jude from the Beatles is longer than what Gavin McKenna played last night.Hey Jude.Ah, that's a good one.I was trying to think of long to medium length songs.Well, Sandstorm 27 minutes.
06:51That's roughly what Matthew Schaefer plays in the night. Is Sandstorm 27?The extended version, I think, is like, 25 to 27.It's not long enough.No. Let me check one here. What do you got? What do you got, Jesse?Ah, yeah, eight minutes and 42 seconds. Purple Rain. That's a good one.
07:08That's a good one, Jesse Blake. There you go.That is a good one. These are all the songs that will be playing in my head if Gavin McKenna ever plays double digits ever again.David Bowie, Let's Dance the Dance Club version, which is the one from the album. That's over seven minutes as well.It the, so the joke off the top of the LFR is wrong because of how absurd Jim Hiller is.So I was looking through my notes and I'm like nine minutes for Gavin McKenna.
07:36That's insane.It's actually nine shifts.Nine shifts.Six minutes, 30 seconds.The nine shifts is worse, I think.I agree with you.They're both equally as bad.They're both horrible.
07:51Because they're both what?Roughly that puts him at 40 seconds of shift?You're both terrible.Is that 40 seconds a shift?I don't know.Not enough a shift.Yeah.Okay.
08:01Not enough for anything. You played Gavin McKenna like he's Zach McKeown. While he's on a four-game point streak and you're at home, what are you doing?Let's give you some background.Let's give me some background.Hit me.Jim Hiller and L.A. took some serious criticism. One of those people was Jesse Blake here on this show.
08:21Yes.It was well documented that Jesse with the lead,he is a play not to lose coachthat likes to park the busafter two periods when his team is up.Now, in L.A., he had certain names.Adrian Kempay, Onzei Kopitar, Drew Doudi,Mikey Anderson, other players, whatever.
08:39Philip Dino.Philip Dino. That's that type of player. In Toronto, he has Nick Blankenberg,Morgan Riley, and Troy Statcher, among others.Statcher.And we were unaware.I think as Maple Leaf fans to this point about this coach and this style because the
08:59Leafs hadn't had a lead coming out of the second period. They were a league worse minus seven going into last night's second period or 30th in theleague.Excuse me.They couldn't be worse than the Flyers. Not just getting outscored but getting outshot too oblivion as well.So this is the first time the Leafs carry a lead out of the second period. Now, it's also worth noting that Hillers, Kings teams also struggled in the second period.
09:21That's a notable thing from his time there.Jesse, what happened in the playoffs a couple years ago against Edmonton?Where he decided to challenge a play and then it went terribly and then they lost the series.Right.But what game was that in and what score was it in the series? It was 2-0 in the series and he had an opportunity to go up 3-0 in the series against Edmonton. And they were leading. And they were leading in the game.
09:44Challenge the goal.He challenged the goal.Edmonton ends up winning the game. And in that game as well, that he has a lead and they lose it.And they never win another game. And they never win another gameand Edmonton goes to the Stanley Cup final.
09:56And Jim gets fired midway through last season. And that's it.He was there for a season and a half, I think,as the head coach.I'm pretty sure. He's not there anymore. Now, check that for you. When he was hired,
10:11I'll just be honest with you.And this is where people go,ah, the Toronto media.Actually.No one is going to the Toronto media this morning. The Toronto mediahave been quite John Shika they were very hard on her.Yes, yes, yes, yes.
10:24Jim Hiller, next to nothing. But I'll tell you that, and I know this happened to youbecause it happened to me,we were bombarded by our contacts around the leaguesaying Jim Hiller is not a head coach in the NHL.Oh, yeah.Bombarded.And also bombarded with he's an incredible guy.
10:40Yes.Love like I genuinely think Jim Hiller is a wicked person. That almost makes it worse.Like they're like he's a great guy.Brad.What's he doing?Seems like a nice guy.Brad for living the best.
10:53Yeah.No.Now, totally. But no, Jim Hiller, all the messages I got were lovely fella. Also, what are they doing?I would just like to say no one in the Toronto media was more critical of Jim Hiller's hiring than I was. That is true.I don't want to hide from that.
11:08I think I called him the worst hiring in Leaves History at the moment. You did. When it happened. So that's my feelings at the time.I'm giving him a chance.I gave him a chance all summer when games weren't played an hour eight games in.we're here.Well, it's also worth noting, by the way.
11:21Nice guy.Also worth noting.Very lovely to deal with.We have loved some of what he's done so far.Some, they're scoring.Yeah.They're scoring.They're scoring.
11:30That's five straight games of three goals or more. Most of them, four goals or more.I think only one of those was three. They're scoring.Well, Jesse and Steve, here's the question I have for you.If this person, widely around the NHL,was known for all of these traits.
11:50Okay?Why were they hired? Now, if you know anything about traits.Traits, excuse me, like had these traits, and we'll get into them a little bit,has these traits. And the traits are, he's like a stale cookie under pressure.Just, anytime he's got to make a decision,
12:05under pressure, he makes the wrong one.And that is something that L.A. fans were like, guys, just be prepared, because this is how it's going to be.And we saw it last night. It was widely speculated that the reason he was hiredand not someone like Bruce Cassidy, who the Leafs apparently had permission to speak to,
12:21but just never even called. If you know anything about Rogers, they will spend on athletes. You've seen it with Vlad Guerrero Jr.,seen it with Marchenko and Matthews, and everybody, they'll spend.Well, Adam, Adam, they spent on what Vlad was,not what he's going to be.That's right.
12:34They will not usually spend the same on management. And I'll give you an example. So John Chica, independently wealthy, had not had a job in the league for half a decade.John Chica's salary is not reported to be that high.Matt Sundeen, independently wealthy, took the job because he wants to instill pridein the Maple Leafs logo,
12:50and from the reports I've heard, and I know they're good ones,he was extraordinarily pissedabout the direction of the team, not just the last two years, the last five.Sure.Furious with how soft they were in the playoffs. Why would you be happy about it?
13:04Like, yeah. And so he wants to come hereand this is a legacy play for him.Matt has the money. He's fine.Neither are supposed to be making big money,as I say. Now, that brings us to Bruce Cassidy.
13:14I'm just using him as a,an example, he's the biggest free agent out there.Coach with his pedigree is going to make slightly under what maybe the best coach in the leaguemakes, which is John Cooper, likely in the $6 to $8 million range, I think, on the higher end.I think he's close to $8 million, but I can't verify it.Cassidy would be in the $5 to $6 million range, right? It's a Stanley Cup winning coach with Vegas just a few years ago, and so he's going to bemaking a lot of money.
13:39Jim Hiller, probably in the $2 to $2.2 million range. And if you look at another Rogers ownedthe Toronto Blue JaysAnd you ask yourself,How is John Schneider still the manager thereWhen he's clearly been out of his depth often,Even when things were going well in the playoffs, there was a lot of John Snyder moves
13:57That you're like, this guy's lost his fucking marbles. Is he a good manager or is Louis Varland just nails?Let's go back to Louis. And let's go back to this.Well, putting Brandon Little in on any of those situations.Oh my God, I know. You know, and before that, their big hire was Charlie Montoya, who is apparently a really great guy,
14:16hired out of the minor leagues, has never worked as a major league manager again. Not even got a sniff.Which sucks because he was the best thing that a baseball manager could be.Funny.These guys are cheap. They're cheap to hire. And that's where Rogers operates. They will spend on players.
14:33They reportedly do not like to spend the same on coaches. That's the report. And it is widely speculated that that's how the Leafs ended up with Hiller. Now, not only does he fit the philosophy of what they wanted to do,because they wanted him.But they also believed that in hiring him, hey, here's a guy that's probably not going to get a head coach job anywhere else. We'll tell him what to do and he'll do it.
14:51The problem is, in game, John Chika can't jump on a cell phoneand tell Jim Hiller what to do.And again, we like the systems he's put in an offense, but it's clear the defense is a mess. And underperforming, I think, it's talent, what little talent is there. And then guys, decision making, Gavin McKenna, that's where we'll start.terrible. Jesse, the press conference last night, I don't ever see you right. This is an odd answer.I think it was. I think I just described what happened. But you are always very, I find your tweets very
15:26objective. It's like, well, here's what they said. But you said, very odd answer from Jim Hillerpost game on McKenna's benching. We wanted to get him out there. And I just didn't get him out there. And now I've sat him for so long. So I probably should have got him out there early in the third. And I didn't. All right. So that's Adam doing his gym.Jim Hiller, here's Jim Hiller.Oh, you got it?Okay, get them both.Get them both.
15:46There, there's no question. Why did Gavin sit the second half of the game? You know what? That was my decision. We went for a stretch.I think we had those penalties.I wanted to get him out there. He sat through those penalties,
15:59and then I didn't get him out there, you know, through that stretch. And then, in the last few minutes of the period,we're just trying to, you know, get out of the period, I guess you would say.And then now he's, I've sat him for so long, and he sits in the intermission. So I probably should have got him out.
16:13there early in the 30th.Everyone sits during intermission. What?Talk to him about that.Did you meet with them one-on-one yet? No.As a coach, do you want to talk to him about this?Yeah, yeah, I'll talk to him for sure.
16:24Yeah, but I haven't talked to him yet.And then let me play the second answer he had, because there was a follow-up later on after those two. Here's the last one.Me.With McKenna, is there a concern that, you know, when you sat him for 30 minutes,I know the reasoning behind it,
16:41but still talking about an 18-year-old, too,you know, just getting his feet wet.Like, is there a concern, like, what that's doing to his psyche?Well, I'll talk to him.Yeah, you're always worried. But I think, you know, you guys have talked to him.I've said this before.I've talked to Gavin.
16:56Very, very mature, very, you know, that stuff roll off.And it doesn't take anything too, too personally. That's what I've got from him. He's usually ready to go.There's been other times I haven't played him as muchand put him in there and double-shifted himand those kinds of things. And, you know, he's responded.
17:12So, yeah, I'll talk to him.but I don't have a big concern about that. The answer is nonsensical. He did something that everyone's like, okay, so McKenna got benched from the second period, middle of the second to the end of the game until they had the final buzzer and they lostthe game.Everyone's like, okay.So after the game, we're going to find out why he got benched.
17:32And Jim Hiller didn't have an answer as to why.And I would have been very satisfied if he said, you know what, we're not going to get intothat something happened, we're not going to get into that. Then it's okay. You've deflected like every coach does. And we move on, we write our stories and we go about our day.I hate when coaches do that, but I have to respect it.I understand why you would do that.
17:57Sure.You don't have to get into it with the media. You are not under oath. This isn't a jury trial. You can just move on with your day.It is better that people think you don't know what you're doing than no.Exactly.So instead of doing this,
18:13that or providing a good reason. He didn't deny the reasons. He didn't provide a good reason. He decided to give an answer that still doesn't make sense.No.I wanted to put him out there and I just didn't get him out there.Even though he is the man in charge of putting that player on the ice.You know what?
18:34That was the thing Jim Hiller had most in common with Lee fans last night.I wanted to get him out there.I couldn't get him out there.I try as I put him out there.Oh, he's still not doing it.Oh, shoot. What do I do?So I just, I'm just so lost at reasoning with trying to find the reasons for his explanation because it doesn't make any sense.
18:59It's so bad. It's so bad that it almost makes me, like, I'm sitting there, like, getting ready for the LFR and I'm sitting there.Like, like, right now on your screen.it's Sergei Bobrotsky's post game.Sure, yeah.He was horrible. It didn't have the best game.I hated his game last night.
19:18And to me it was his first bad game.None of us are talking about that.No.Like, I thought Jake McCabe had a horrible game.Troy Stetcher did not have a very good game.Blankenberg was if he.Blankenberg, you got the good and you got the bad.Yeah.
19:35I didn't like his first half.I liked the second half.Marchenko had a hat trick.Marchenko had a hat trick. No one care. There are so many things we could be talking about today. The lights!By the way, by the way, what is something I've said about Austin Matthews before,
19:49and you all need to start keeping track of this? The sexiest, the most beautiful goals of his career, the Leafs will find a way to lose that game. That's kind of true, actually. They will think of all his most memorable moments.Remember the Patrick Kane?So they blew that lead, they didn't lose that game.Oh, but the point won.
20:07The point they lost. The four goal game.game they lost, go back and think to, like, outside of overtime winners, all of his best goalsthey lose.Damn it.We should be talking about, but, but, but, but, but, but, like, you, you, you, you,you mentioned a couple positives, like Matthews Marchenko. There are so many negative things to talk about from last night and we're all talking about,
20:31Adam, your daughter watched the wiggles, right?Yeah.Word salad, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.Word salad, do, do, do, do.Yummy, yummy.Great bass line in that song.I am scared, Jesse.Okay.
20:48Because we all have our axes to grind and our players we like and our players we don't.And sometimes that extends to coaches.Whenever Morgan Riley makes a mistake, I naturally get a bunch of tweets and they go,oh, don't let Adam see that. And Jim Hiller has that game last night. And I'm like, well, Jesse's, Jesse's going to be on one.But I didn't, after eight games, expect to have my faith shaken that way.And last night in the, in the LFR video, I was talking about process.
21:26Like, trust the process.Like, for the first seven games of the season, I'm like, guys, they're winning, they're losing. They have a mediocre record.Trust the process.because these things are going well, these things aren't going well, they're competitive in all these games,it's okay, trust the process.
21:45Last night, there was a demonstration that actually there is no process. This guy's free balling it.Like,I was going out there.Like, what's that, like,
21:56drunken kung and kung fu?Like, how are you supposed to knowwhat attack is coming?I don't even know what attack I'm about to do.When he was line-blower,blending. I thought there was a method to the madness. And now I'm like, oh, I think he's just doingshit. There's a moment in the office, there's an episode where Kevin's talking about cookies
22:15to Robert California. And Robert California thinks he's talking about like some big economics plan. And by the end of the episode, Robert California is like, oh, you were actually talking about actualcookie. Yes. And we took Jim Hillers going 11 and 7 line matching, trying to do all this stuff for like,oh, he knows what he's doing. This is sick. And then we got to game eight and it found out like, no, he's talking about cookies. He doesn't know what he's doing and he's just messing with shit. And these are the complaints people had in L.A.One of the biggest things is how he treated young players and Brent Clark specifically.
22:52It seems like he couldn't find a place to play Brant Clark, which is such a shame because you have a nice young talent and you're wasting him.And I'm shocked that eight games in, we've seen the worst.worst of Jim Hiller, which is a very passive system. So he's not doing the one-two, but he's hasthem in their one-three-one in the, sorry, backwards, I just said it. He's not doing the one-three-one,but he has them in the one-two where he has them sitting back and turtling. In the same way, like they would be in the one-three-one. I hate watching the first three minutes of the thirdperiod in which the team I'm cheering for is winning by two goals, watching and going, they're losingthis game. Yeah, because they need to put up five right now because their defense is so bad.
23:38And if they don't put up five goals, they can't win. And Jim Hiller decides with a team withpoor defense, all we're going to do is play defense for this entire rest of the game. Andlo and behold, it didn't work. It was England in the World Cup. There's an enormous difference. They sat against Spain. There's an enormous difference between playing defense and gettingcaved. My beer league team, we are not in our own end because we're playing defense. We're in our own end because we're getting outmatched. And say like we're,sometimes you got to recognize that we're not doing it on purpose.
24:10You got to recognize when you don't have the horses.Yeah.No.And the reality of this Maple Leafs team is they have one guy who's a first pair guy in Darren Radish.I really liked him. You've got one guy who's a second pair guy who's healthy in Jake McCabe. And it's pretty fair to say that everybody else who's playing defense for them is a third pair at best.at third pair at best
24:34and I listenI include Mo in thatbecause Mo is alwaysgoing to be goodon the offensive side of the puckbut evenlike I thinkthe stats on every
24:43every levelthis guy can't play defense anymoreand he never really couldbut now it's really badI think Mo is a goodoffensive player once the puckis already on the opponent'sside of the blue line
24:56yeahin terms of moving the puck up the iceno I think heI think they ought to honestlymove him to forward. I'm not kidding. I know people have talked about there for years. I think he'sa power forward in the making. He's built like a brick shit house. Put him on the making. It's a littletoo late. Listen. 30. Put us. Yeah. Listen, Brett Burns did it. He did it in his 20s. But still, they will never do that. And I know they'll never do that, which is why I don't bring it up for
25:22two or three years now. I've thought that. And I don't think I don't think it's ever been moreobvious. I think Morgan Riley could be like a half a point of game forward. Yes. I think he could be able toput it. I'm not doing a bit. Put him with Cowan and Cizons. See what happens. I'm not doing it.It's never going to happen. They really should try. They're not going to. Um, I mean, maybe he hatesit enough that he's like, yeah, I'll wave. But, or it works or like, like, I'm, now that I'm goingthrough the reasons to try it. Why don't we try it? But here, let's not get bogged down. The head coachfailed the team last night. Hugely. And it becomes, you can't play park the bus when you don't have abus. Yeah, when you've got a bicycle, you can't park it in front of it. The Leafs have had Luke
26:13Fox brought this up last night and I think it just screams, hey, this is the problem. The Leafs havehad five losses so far this year. Yes, only one three. They've had a lead in every single one. That's crazy, man. That's crazy.Every single loss, they've led that game.So there's a reason why we've really enjoyed watching them. They're the 16-17 leaves without the excuses.Yeah.They really are.
26:40That team was horrible the first month.Yeah, it was.But we were all like, wee.But it's fun. It's sure better than last year.Yes.Yes.And they had no pressure to make the playoffs.
26:49New big money goalie that we're all sort of not sure about. He has a couple good performances, a few real bad ones.Yeah, October, Freddie was bad.Fred Tober wasFred ToberBut this is the thingSo let's talkYou know what
27:02You don't have to take our word forHow about Justin BourneWho played in the A and the EAnd also wasWork for the Maple Leafs as a video coachHe saidI'll write more on itI think
27:11But Hiller's quotes on McKennaSeem like a coachTrying to bothSet the standardWith the kidAnd wear the heatIn publicRather than McKenna
27:19Having to answer for itQuestion markOtherwise yeahIt's all extremely oddFollows it upWith KayI rewatchedall of 92 shifts.
27:27How many were there?Nine.Nine shifts.Oh.So it didn't take him very long.Yeah.I thought you said 92 shifts.I'm like there weren't that many.
27:34No,92's shifts.Right? That's how many shifts. That's how many shifts.Leno or Linot or whatever in Anaheimid play before he got his six million bucks.Blue now.Lou now.
27:44That's it.Tristan.Okay,I rewatched 92's shifts. If play related could only be neutral zone.A few times you saw Alfie talked to him.A few times Buffalo flew right through his side with speed.Still, he was good.
27:57Few touches led to direct chances. No reason to be benched, which if coaching,if coach's answers are legit, this is concerning.Like, and like, you can't then be like,uh, what, like let's say Gavin McKenna goes out and has a great game on Saturday.Which I think he will.I think he will too.You can't go, aha, coaching masterclass by Jim Hitt.
28:19No, you blew a point. And you handed your opponent too. You're up to in the third period.don't have a Norris nominee. You have to win that game 10 times out of nine. You have to.I know it's early. You blew it.
28:38And you know the way to do that? You have to play high octane hockey all the way through.Yes.They can't do.Babcock used to do this shit. And that's why I'm not surprised.Every coach does this shit.Where it's like, oh, we're going to, we're going to play defense.
28:49Actually, you can't, though. The Leafs cannot play defense. We've known that every game this season that you've watched. If you watch the Leafs game this year, you know they can't play defense. So why would you try?You need better personnel back there.John Chike has got to solve that.God bless him, it's not going to be easy.
29:04And so when you are up to, when you have four two after two periods, what have you done to get there? You've played high octane offense. What are you doing the third? You play high octane offense. Why did you go away from the thing that got you a four to lead? And even if you don't add to the score, at least you're spending some time in the offensive zone.pressuring so that the other team doesn't have the puck.If you're only trying to play defense,
29:30then the other team is just going to take that opportunity and press. What do you think of Colton Sissons as an ad from this?I think he's been great. He's been really good.I really like him.Great three on three player.Three on three overtime. What the fuck was that?
29:43Matthews, you've bumped your head. You have one of the best players in the world, which I think it's safe to say that's how Matthews has started the season. He's been spectacular. One of the best players.in the world with a mid-30s Oliver Ekman-Larsen and Colton Sissons? What? And you're worried about it.
30:01This is not what I paid $3,600 for as a Leaves fan.And you're worried about an 18-year-old being cold coming off the bench? What?By the way, that's your fault, too.And when Tavares goes down, and I'm so glad you made this point.Okay, fine, you want to bench McKenna send a message, fine.Tavaris goes down and you shorten, you're already shortening the bench for noreason. Yes. You don't play McHugh in the entire third. You don't play McKinney the entire third.
30:30Okay. And then on top of that, you've played William Nealander eight minutes in the third period.Matt Matthews and Rosavick and I think count are all up around seven. Mike Johnson goes, oh, they looktired. And I screamed at the TV. Did you see William O.T. who never likes to get off for a ship? He's like, get me off. After 20 seconds. I can't contribute. You could only to take a 20 second shift. And that man is an incredible shape. He's known for being in incredible shape. This coach burned his best players losing the leadand then couldn't get them rested enough for the, for the, what do you do?
31:03And where did Tivar's?In the game eight of the season,he went down to nine forward. What are you shortening the bench for?Nine forwards for no reason. After a Western road trip where they only played 11 forwards,so all the guys had to play more ice time. And where did Tavaris play most of last night before he got hurt?
31:18Second line?Left wing!Yeah, yeah, yeah.Where McKenna plays! Why?So when I talk about my faith being shaken in the process, right?Yeah, this is Jim Hiller. This is Jim Hiller.
31:34This is Jim Hiller.Adam got right to the heart of the issue off the top of the show, and we got lost in the sauce.I went for a run in the field. That's fine.I generally like the things John Chica has done and continues to do.Yep.This is your first coaching hire.
31:53and there's questions about him after eight games. There was questions when he got hired, but everybody wants to give this guy a chance. And by the way,I still do.But I hope John Chica marched down there last night and said,Jim,you know how you like to look over tape with players?
32:08We're going to look over your tape. That's what needed to happen last night. You can't do this again.I think it'd be great if John Chica did that.I think it'd be better if Matt's did it.Okay, fine. But, you know, the one thing I am excited aboutwith this Leafs organization so far under this group,
32:23and I talked about it on the stream last night, guys, where John Cheika,I'm calling him Robo Cheika, because he is not,I remember the Alex Behrer Banoff saga with the Leafs, the Leafs sign this Russian guy, Alex Bearer Banoff,Sheldon Keefe doesn't really like playing him.So what does Kyle Dubus do?
32:40I liked every game of his.I was mad.And then he does right by the player, and he trades him to the Sharks for Anci Swamala, who never plays a game for the Leafs. And what's crazy about that is thatthe Leafs could have used, him later in the year because they had injuries. Yeah, and
32:55Barabanov went on to bestraight up good for San Jose. He was goodfor San Jose. Adequate. Yeah.Michael Amadio, same thing. And still playing in the league, by theway. That's one where I was like, okay, my eyescan shut up forever because I watchedhim on the Leafs and I was like, that's
33:11the worst skater I've ever seen. Mason Marchman too.And then he immediately went onto be great. My pointin this is that the Leafs have gotten awayfrom that. There is, I don'tlook at John Chikek and go, there's asentimental guy. Right. No, my God. Maybe with his kids. Yesterday he traded a guy who the Leafsjust signed. Brandon Burr in March, I think they signed him. They signed him. I don't know if he ever
33:34played a game for the organization. Like, did he play for the Marley's? The old guy signed him though, right? They did. Yeah. So, and he goes, well, see ya. Best of luck. And he's a Vancouver kid, so it kind of makes sense. Jacob Quillet. Like,we should have seen this Jacob Quillan trade coming because like that guy got likea real long stretch with last year's teamdoes not come close to making this year's roster. And like, of course he's gone.I think Chica's like sweet.
34:04So like, yeah, I could have claimed this guy off waivers, but I also got rid of two guys I don't want. One thing CJ said in the CJ show is that he doesn't see this happening again. And that would be a Chica thing and a Sundeen thing. You go down and you tell him, hey, this is inexcusable. We can't have this media storm that is an unforced area.you created this yourself. Why are we doing this?
34:25So hopefully from here on out,if this had to happen in game eight,so it doesn't happen in game 80,then good. Then we've all learned and we move forwardand McKenna's going to play 15 minutes a night. Can we pause for a brief moment on media storm? It's a media storm and it's a fan storm.
34:44Sometimes media can be ridiculous.Sometimes fans can be ridiculous. Is this outrage not justified? No, no, it's a media storm because they made it one.Yes.Yeah.So the Leafs are upset.Like they've created this situation.
34:56Jim Hiller has made this media storm. And what made it worse was his comments post game guys.Yeah.Oh my gosh.He had four, he had points in four straight.Mm-hmm.Three of which were on the road.I'm paying like, NHL teams, and I assume we're going to get to this, are struggling.
35:16Good NHL teams are struggling to put butts in seats to start the season. It's an awful sign.I pay 800 bucks or whatever it is for a family of three to go to a Leafs game where Gavin McKenna is on the roster. And you play them nine shifts.Give me my money back. And you're right about that.Give me my money back.Yep.
35:45Which they're not going to do because that's not how this business works. So I'm not coming back.are what i didn't come to see colton citizens in overtime yeah most people just like brunardtused to complain about camp in overtime yes like most people don't buy flex packs most people are notseasoned seat holders most people go to one or two games a year because they either saved upfor the tickets or magically got them from someone some dropped through a corporate or somethingor you got them for someone as a gift or you won them uh from rachelRaiders.
36:23Like, people don't want to donate now. They don't want to get the Leafs tickets.Oh my God.That was funny. That was very, very funny.I've gotten like probably 75 emails since last night, like just for donation. So thank you very much. But if I'm going to one or two Leaf Games a year and that's the one I go to, I'm never
36:43coming back. Are you just, I'll still cheer.I'll get, I'll get merch, I'll watch on TV, I'll go to the bar.I am not spending. You think I'm exaggerating when I say $800, some of you.No, no, no.The last game I went to with my wife and son,it was $800 for us.
37:06One of us was falling asleep by the end of the gamebecause he was five or six. It's cool that they let you use the helipad, though. It was very cool that they let me land on top of the building. That's very cool.$800?No, no, no, no.The coach benches the kid and he's justified in doing it.
37:25Fine.There was no reason to do it.And the reason to get a Maple Leaf's ticket this year wasn't based on last year'steam's performance.Hell no.I want to see the kid.I want to see him play.Faults and all.
37:46Yeah.I want to see him make mistakes and grow.Yes.That's how you get invested in somebody. Now, luckily, Matthews has been great, and I get to see that, you know, I probably don't feel cheated because I got to see that.Marchenko hat-rick.He scored, the Marchenko-Hattrick.Are you walking out of there feeling good about it?
38:03No.No.You're pissed. You're pissed.Well, what was your impression of Gavin McKenna?Oh, he's got great posture.Like what? All he did was sit.
38:11Can chew on that mouth guard. What the best of them. And, by the way, they showed a clip of them late in the game.It was either late in the third or.heading into overtime. He's talking to Eastern Cowan on the bench. He's laughing. Because I don'tthink he understands why he was sitting there for so long. Because the coach didn't even know why hewas sitting there for so long because Jim Hiller tried to get him out there and just got to,I'm Gavin McKenna. Okay. I believe in myself and I should. I'm Gavin McKenna. I went to
38:41the W.HL. I murdered. I went to college. I murdered. I'm starting my NHL. I'm probably a frontrunner for the Calder. My coach bench me. Let's see how this goes. Final horn goes, hey, you look like an asshole. This is why you don't bench me. What lesson did he learn? There was no lesson to be learned. That if I get benched, you're going to blow a multi-gole leadand fuck it up in overtime? McKenna didn't do anything to get bench. That's the thing. There's nolesson to learn. And then when they need scoring, they're like, no, still not you. And this is thething. How many times is Jim Hiller, and this has happened before, going to say, yeah, I calledhim, we just couldn't get him out there. That's, he said it in a quarter of Gavin McKenna's
39:28career games. Do you realize? So it wasn't just last night. It was over time, a couple of times. It was overtime. I want to say the first overtime of the season, which I think was the thirdgame. Because they've played quite a few. Yeah. Vegas one. There was, uh, no, it was after,it was after a couple of overtime. Oh, maybe he was Vegas. He still hasn't hit. You know, GavinMcKed has not taken a shift in overtime?Yeah, he's never played three on three over time.Never once.Yeah.
39:53The child? With the great hands? The child. We talked about this last episode because that was another game where he didn't get into O.T.And it's starting to look stupid. It's very stupid. And you can justify anything if you have a reason for it.Yes.
40:10But this man can't provide a reason.Yeah.And he doesn't even know himself why he's doing this.Baroube would do stuff we disagree.agreed with all the time, but I'm like, well, that's how he views hockey.Baroube would be like, here's my fist talking to you as to why I'm doing it.Yeah.I'm going to provide a reason.
40:27You're going to think it's nonsensical. You don't like it.But at least you're a reason.Yes.Jim Hiller doesn't have anything to back this up with.I can handle you being wrong if you have the right reason.I don't have patience with you if you were just out there making it up, which is what it seemslike.
40:46Yeah.And it, again, maybe it's a media masterclass because so many guys had poor performances last night and all we're doing is talking about Hiller and gassing up Gavin, by the way.I mean, that's, but the way we got here is he just didn't play the fuck.We were not blaming Gavin for last night no matter what.Nobody was.It was all.It was all.Steve is talking about him playing a next level of 3D chess.
41:13We're not talking about the D being bad and everything. We're just talking about Jim Hiller being bad.We can talk about it though.Which is incredible.Like, I don't, I don't, you went, you went back to 12 and 6 and proceeded to use.Nine and six.I mean, not.Like, after Tavares got hurt, though, it was like eight.
41:35Even then, like, keep chopping guys. And no Zach McEwen, too, who I thought was.So I was taking out McHuwen Tavar as McKenna, and that's how I get down.Okay, tell you what, Islanders tomorrow.Nine and nine.Because nothing matters and you're just trying shit. And you have no reasons behind anything and you have no process.Tomorrow night have nine forwards and nine defensemen.
42:01Because we're just guessing. What about Matthews, Nealander, Marchenko play the whole game. And D.D.Pair is Riley Radish.Okay.And it goes to overtime. And then it's OEL.
42:13Sizzins.And maybe we put out Teddy Blugers.Sizzins.and OEL last night, each had minute long shifts in overtime. That is over time is five minutes long.Outrageous, Jesse. They both shared a single minute on the ice.Give me my money back.
42:32Sizzins and OEL.Two sweets.I take card.I take cash.Give me my money back. What's that Justin Timberlake movie where you get to put time in yourwatch and that's what keeps you alive? Oh yeah. The leaf stole from our watch last night. I don't know that movie.
42:51It's stupid. It's stupid. Is it limitless? Like most Justin Timberlake movies, it will disappointyou. Kind of like limit. Yeah. It's a little bit. A little bit. Yeah. It's yeah, but the premiseis like hard limit. Like the second year watches up, you die. Right. And I, my watch got so muchcloser to zero last night watching not Gavin McKenna play and watching Owee Allen Sissons andWhat are we doing? You think I'm joking.Tomorrow night.I want Matthews being winged by
43:23friggin' Brandon DuAim and Nick Blankenberg. And I want the second line to be,hopefully Tavares is ready to go.If he's not, I want it to be Nick Paul in the middle.Marshall Rify is now left winged.Yeah, let's go.And Arder Actimov is on the right, because nothing matters.
43:42I want Jim Hiller to come out in a kilk and a top hat.I want Daniel Offerson to come out in a Sends jersey.I want John Chica to friggin.Get the Kachina out. Let's go.Yeah, yeah.Wear a coyote's jersey as he plays right D with a left-handed stick.Nothing matters. With a new Jersey devil's hat because he almost got hired there.
44:01Yes.The social network was pretty good.Justin Timberlake's a big part of that.I hated his character. So the movie was called. You were supposed to.Yeah, sure. That's the Sean Parker's.
44:10But it was go away heat.Like it wasn't you're a good heel. That's Sean Parker.Sean Parker's annoying.By the way, the movie we're talking about stars Amanda Seafreed,Killian Murphy, Olivia Wilde, Johnny Galecky, and Justin Timberlake.Good cast. That's a big movie.
44:2535% of Rotten Tomatoes, but IMDB listeners gave it a 6.7 in a future where time is moneyand the wealthy can live forever. Will Salis, Justin Timberlake, is a poor man who rarely has more than a day's worthof life left on his clock. What's it called? In time.Okay.When he saves Henry Hamilton, Matt Boomer.
44:43From thieves, he receives.he receives the gift of a century. However, such a large transactionattracts the attention to the authorities. And when Will is falsely accused of murder,he must go on the run, taking the daughter, Amanda Safreed,of an incredibly wealthy man with him.
44:56I don't know if this is too inside baseball, but 95% of the time, the Leafs practice today. And after the game yesterday,we got the notice that today's a day off.And I thought that was interesting. Can I just say...They do that so often.
45:13Can I say something?Oh, no.I think this is...What?Call sit right now.Oh my God, we got to call shit right now.Oh, no!Sit!
45:23Go do it, Sid!No!He's going to be right. He's going to be like, you guys made fun of me now.I told you. He's got to defend Gavin today. No, he's going to, he's going to come.
45:32He rightly should be like, you guys were wrong.I was right.Bit it's longer than you. Now, here's the thing. This is the type of shit. Now, we talked about Rick Bonus.on Monday or Wednesday on his
45:45I'm Rick Bonison I'm mad at the teamI want people who want to be hereAnd every other outletLike you can look at us and goNone of you played in the leagueAnd none of you coached in the leagueAnd the league in the leagueStick it up your ass
45:56But I will also say thisEvery other outletIncluding TSNWe're like heySo that's probably bad rightAnd they were all likeYeah they've probably tuned him outAnd I actually asked around the league
46:09And somebody told meA couple of people actually saidif Rick Bonas is talking like that, they've already tuned him out.And there are moments in a coach's career. We look at Bruce Cassidy at the end of the 24-25 season. They lose in five games to the Edmonton Oilers. It's a shit series.
46:24They were terrible, terrible. And he tears a strip off that team. And he's still there in training camp last year at the beginning. But when he was fired with like 10 games to go,and Vegas were in the playoff picture, but they didn't look that good. And Torts replaced him,one of the things that was cited was the players were super pissed about how he tore a strip off them after the season was over they thought it was unfair and that that moment started a huge wedge which i think already kind of existed bruce cassidy wears out his welcome where he goes many coaches do this is one of those things where the vibes were high austin matthews was talking about how the vibes were high even pre training camp jonas seagull had that in his article uh you could see there was a puck back
47:10battle drill between McKenna and Matthews yesterday. And he's really motivated by McKenon trying to teach him and bring him on and being a great leader.Great leadership.Great to see him out there with the fourth liners.I'm sorry. You mean the HL tweener, Gavin McKenna?Well, I mean, that's how he was played. And Jim Hiller just created what I think could be the first time, because anytime you step into a situation, everybody wants to give you the benefit of the doubt, everybody wants to trust you.
47:36You want to be proven right or wrong.I want to be proven.I want everybody around the league to be wrong.I want Jim Hiller to win this Daily Cup because I'm a league fan. That's what I want. But this is the first time we've seen and it's eight games into the seasonwhere veteran players are going to look at that coach and go, okay.So that was bad if it continues happening.
47:56I just straight up won't trust this guy and I'm going to just do my own thing. Now, that's what happens.Here's.This is bad. This is really bad. It's rare that you see a head coach blow a game like this guys.It is.I know we're the Toronto media.
48:11I know that we're an intense group.Oh, I don't know how any head coach would want to coach here. But I have to be honest with you. This is really, really bad.And it's not even the worst coaching performance last night because Rick Talkett, he's next. But we are, this is a blown game 100% on the coach.Everybody in the media room knew it.Every average fan who was watching the game knew it.
48:37In the building and at home.Everybody knows it.Leafs management knows it.And that's why hopefully this happens eight games in and we all live and learn and it neverhappens again.Otherwise, this man does not deserve the job.The one bit of silver lining, like one of the words I heard, you know, over the summer usedto describe Jim Hiller, again, most of the words were complimentary of him as a person.
49:02Absolutely.As a coach, one of the words used was pushover.andCraig Baroubewas not a pushover.Complete opposite. But like, let'syou couldn't tell Craig anything.
49:16No.Which you can't have that either.Like I don't think,I don't think that's good either.You got to work with people.Let's meet somewhere in the middle.Malleable?I like that.
49:28Malleable.Open to new ideas.Open to new ideas.Like you, okay, you make a really silly mistakelast night and you, blow a game and we're all mad about it.If you learn from it and no one's ever too old to learn,
49:43Jim Hillers, you know, he's not Kevin McKenna. He's probably three times his age, maybe more.If you learn from it and this is a blipand this is something we laugh about later.Great.Great.That's what everybody's hoping for. We're begging for it.
50:01Well, last year, we would see this and we'd be like, oh, we're doomed. We're doomed until he's fired. That's because the friend office also were like,we back him 100%.So we weren't,like I know the friend office with Sundeen and Chicaknows that last night was blown by the coach.I know they know that.
50:20I didn't know that last year with Leaves Management. There is a reputation thing. You know, coaches with rings like that matters.Barubey's got a ring as a Stanley Cup head coach.Rick Tockeets got a ring as a Stanley Cup assistant coach.and, you know, he's, I'm talk, right? He's got this manner about him.If Jim Hiller keeps churning out games like this,
50:44I don't think the Leafs will have any qualmsabout kicking him to the curb.So he probably knows that.I've never heard that he's a stupid person. So let's figure it out.Because that I don't,I'm not interested in watching the Leafs lose like that.Like, that was,
51:05So last year we went from, I don't want to watch a single minute of this movie to that was a great movie.Ending was stupid. You know?I don't want to come away with that feeling anymore.I agree with you.Really?I don't get it.I don't get why he did that.
51:25I don't think he gets why he did that, which is more frustrating.Don't do it again. Now, here's the, here's some.He tried and just couldn't do it.Yeah.Here's some good things.Austin Matthews, this is from Luke Fox,games needed for Austin Matthews to hit six goals.
51:3824 to 25, it took 16 games.25, 26, it took 12 games.Okay.This year it's taken eight.Love that. That's six goals and six games for Austin Matthews, by the way. That goal gets more impressive every time I watch it.It's incredible.
51:54The keep at the blue line. He's going backward while jumping up and grabbing it.And then to come down, dig, put the puck, put the puckdown on his stick and like actually kind of loki win a puck battle in the middle of all thatshit that was awesome i wish i could remember it fondly caril marchenko nine points in eight games i knowthree of them happened last night nine points in eight games so what the guy who was strugglingi mean i know again i know it's a hat trick but brady kuchuk was struggling he now has six goalsyes right things changed quickly marchenko was struggling to score but he still put up points
52:30And he looked good every time.He always looked good.I don't know. It's a wasted dominant performance.Oh, yeah.Or you could look at it like, oh, he stole them a point.Like the only reason, the main reason, the primary reason they got a point last night is Carol Marchenko.Yes.
52:47Yeah.And it should be mentioned that before he went down with an injury, John Tavares with another power play point.Oh, yeah. And Austin.Austin had a really good game.Yes.I thought Willie had a decent game too.Yeah.
52:56He's not going to get four or five points every night.Exactly.But I think he was effective.in areas. This, a lot of other stuff. He's toned down the Willie, what are you doings per 60?Yes.
53:09Yep.Let me correct Luke Fox, too. That stat I said about the five games, losses, five leads.Utah was a tie.So you did tweet that out.True.Utah, they only tied the lead.
53:22Tied the game.I felt like in Utah, I know they lost.Four or five. But they went down swinging.I can watch a team that goes down swinging.Oh, yeah. That was my problem with the least.dollar's game. Last night they went down swing and it hit themselves in the dick.
53:34That's what I'm talking about, man. Like that's the kind of swing and I don't like. The Utah game, I didn't mind. When you look at like, remember when they lost games five and seven,Florida and they got canned six one at home both times, I said to you at the time, this teamloses like losers. The team I see this year, they've lost games, but they don't, I haven'tseen them lose like losers. I saw their coach lose like a loser last night. This is the most Toronto thing ever.Clip it, but you're, Adam's right.I'll cope. They're losing better.
54:06Listen.No, you're right, though. You're right. But also, you know how it's.But the bar's low here.Okay, what are you new?You see how this looks.I know, but this is how the bar has been.
54:18Concerning thing about dropping that point last night, the Lightning Panthers, Sabres in that game,Sends and Red Wings, five Atlantic Division teams all picked up two points.Yep. You can't drop that game. No, you have to win that one in regulation. Two points in October means the same as two points in April.Yep. You can't lose that game. You got to close out that game. Can't lose that damn game.
54:43You're streaming on Saturday. That'll be fun.I am and I saw that out of town scoreboard sends win to one over the islanders. That team cannot score.No.Please, please don't allow them to score tomorrow. You need those two points.Matthias Machelli is on a hot streak. This is Matthias Micheli's last five games.Adam Wilde, what do you think?
55:07Good.I'm happy for him.He has a goal against Ottawa, a goal and an assist against Vancouver, an assist againstTampa, an assist against, why is their AI thing popping up?An assist against Chicago.I'd like to help you buy tickets. And assist against the Rangers. That is a five-game point streak.
55:23Adam, point out the lack of ice time and point out the fact that he's a minus in two of those games. Are you regretting the Miteas Micelli leaving Toronto? He could score 80 points and I would not be.All right.I don't get.No, no.All right.Honest to God.
55:36This guy, you guys think, you guys think it was just about the points. If you guys think that Micelli is just about the points, ask why Utah gave him up and Toronto gave him up so quickly. It ain't, it ain't about just that.Matea's attitude with this too.Matias.You don't get scratched.Listen, Baroubae treated people weirdly.Yes.
55:55You get scratched for nine fucking games in a row.You think that's his skill? You think it's what he brings to a lineup?Or is it something else? No, he doesn't.He doesn't give a shit, guys. No, the worst thing that Matthias Machelli could do is dress in a TSN game.Oh.
56:11Because at intermission, Mike Johnson's tearing you apart.Because he knows what he's talking about. What if you have a guy who doesn't give a shit and puts up 80 points?Yeah, Adam, 80?Why'd you have to throw at 80?I was with here.I don't want to my team.I don't want on my team.
56:27I don't want to want to my team. All six points have come in the last five games. We got enough Maple Leafs fever here.We don't need another one.Let's tie it.Thank you.Let's tie it with a bow.No, thank you.
56:36Let's tie it with a bow.Matias Micelli played 22 shifts last night.Gavin McKenna played nine. There should be arrests.I want warrants on my desk today. That's the true story. That's the true story.Bet MGM is an official sports betting partner of the National Hockey League and ready for puck drop.

Oh, that's an easy over.Okay.Stepping on that with both.Yeah, yeah.
57:11The Adam Wild Sportsbook needs to set a better number. All right.Adam Wild Sportsbook asks you this.If BetMGM had it at 15 and a half minutes.Well, there we go.Is that what it is?No, no.I said if.
57:22It's not a.If is underlined.If.Under.You'd say under.I see I think they're going to play him like 18 now to make no I think JimHiller is going to be a little bit of a stick in the mud to like 13 come on I'm going toAdam he's an NHL coach of course that's what he's doing I'm going over download the betmgm

58:41I don't know.I have to go find out, but be 19 plus for that.Screamers is probably not recommended for children under 10, so, you know, just play it by ear. Also not recommended for Jesse Blakes who have scary screams in and of themselves.I'm not sure what would be scarier.Screamers or Jesse scream at screamers?Oh.Your scream is way scarier than that.
59:00No.Screamers is open from 7 to 11,Sundays and weekdays and 7 to midnight for a little late night scare.Fridays and Saturdays.Tickets available at screamers.Dotsea.Costumes encouraged, but no masks or weapons, please, obviously.Yeah.
59:14Now, the Leafs did make a trade yesterday, too.Yeah.I was told that it is pronounced atu, raw, too.Yes.And it was raw. That's how it was pronounced.Atu Ratu to the Torontobelieves in exchange for Brandon Byrne and Jake Quillan.
59:30Now Atu Ratu at one pointwas considered like a top five can't miss prospect. He is a face-off,great face-off winner. He did clear waivers on Thursday. He was like one of the principal piecesof the Bohrothat trade.Yes, he was.And it's never really panned out for him,
59:45but he does win a lot of face-offs.He's 23.He's played NHL games, including this year. He's just slow.Yeah.He's really slow.I'll live.I mean, ultimately...
59:56If Tavares is out, you might have to call him up.Quillen's fast.Yeah, he is.And he put up like, what is it, three points in 25 games last season or something.Yep.Jacob Quillan called a cup champion.I'll always love him for that.He was a soldier during last year's awful, awful, awful run.
01:00:16He fell out of favor with this administration.I think it's because he was associated with the last administration.Probably.It seemed...Fairly obvious. He was never really...He wasn't considered an NHL option by this team.Atu-Ratu, I imagine, is.
01:00:32Yeah.Brandon Burr being involved in that after they just signed them is odd, but...Different administration. For both teams.Ah.Because I'm pretty sure Ryan Johnson's been hired since.John Chica was hired since. And Burr is a B.C. guy.
01:00:48Yep.So in most scenarios, I'd be like, oh, that's poor form. But in this scenario, I'm like, oh, he might actually be cool with that.Yeah.I don't know. But that's my still instilled dubous due right by the guy brain.I don't care.Did you make a trade video?
01:01:10I think they should try.No.Why?I was being a dad.You got to make a trade video.Well, you got to do that today.No.I'm not doing a day late.
01:01:18Guys, Atu Ratu trade video.Do you deserve an Ratu Ratu trade video? This is the Atu Ratu Ratu Trade video.video. I think you can still do it.People will be interested.People will be until kiss my ass.Hey, Simon Benoit got you 100,000 views. You're telling me Atu Ratu wouldn't do well?
01:01:33Come on now.Yeah, but they change the, people will be interested here. You're talking about like the prospects and Quillin and all that stuff. You can still do it.It's not too late.Thank you, Jesse. The Ratu stuff is interesting because like I get that he's good on the face-offs.
01:01:45If he's so slow, like some of the numbers I was looking on NHL Edge, they don't show you if somebody's like really bad. They just say they're in the body.Which sucks.50th percentile. They don't want to embarrass you, right? They negotiated with the NHLPA.It's like, okay, we're going to release these numbers, but we're not going to put
01:02:01anybody at the bottom of anything. You're just going to be in the group of bottom. In all of his skating metrics, he's in the bottom 50th percentile.Adults, by the way.Adults.Come on.Anyways.I get that he's good at faceoffs.
01:02:15Why not try him on the wing if he's so slow? You could. You have to have some speed to play a full 200-foot game.and be a center and up and down the ice.Maybe he's a better winger with the Marleys.Like I would like to see that.Well, Jesse, I mean, I think you're really bearing to leave. This is actually a blockbuster HL deal.
01:02:32Oh, yeah.It wasn't even worth a video. It's called it.Wow.All right. You know, I'll shoot one before we go.It wasn't even worth it.You know how mad Drew's going to be when he gets that email?
01:02:43What the,no.He's not going to be happy about it.You should do it.I'll do it and deal with the, anger. Butthis is a Calder Cup champion beingtraded for a Calder Cup champion because Outer Outu
01:02:58won with the Abbotsford Canucksa couple years ago and hisHAL numbers offensively aredynamite but weknow that doesn't matter if youcan't do it at the NHL level. So I'd be interested to seehow he does on the wing
01:03:13but like I don't knowTavares is not an overlyfast center. That's true. Like ifyou canwell they might have acquired a center not a moment too soon.I just think Tavares you kind of knew what he was at the age of 23and that was the first overall picking kind of good.Yes.
01:03:31This is a guy who's struggled to find his footing in the league,so I don't want to compare him to John Tavares. And it's not like he didn't have an opportunity in Vancouver.Yeah.Who was awful. He did play 66 games last year.Honestly, him and Quillan are kind of a perfect matchbecause they both played probably way too many games on a team that was awful.
01:03:52Quillan's like eight?Like Brubay didn't play him that much. No, he played a lot more than that.He played him like eight games worth of minutes.Right, right. But I know Barubei didn't love throwing Quillan out there. No, I think if he could have killed him with a gun, he would have.23 games.
01:04:10Oh, 23?Okay, that's a lot more than I thought. He had three points in 23 games.I watched Jacob Quillen play 23 games.Thank you for the context.I need you to understand. And Jesse is a credentialed Toronto Maple Leafs reporter and was in that room more than once a day, pretty much every game day.Yeah.
01:04:28You don't remember this person.I remember Jacob Quillan.I don't remember him 23 times.23.If you had to guess last year who played more games, Marshall Rify or Jacob Quillan, would you have...Oh, I know Marshall Ruffai didn't get into enough time.Yes.That's absolutely true.
01:04:46But no, three points in 23 games.but in the AHL, he was dynamite. He had 36 points in 40 games.I worry that Vancouver had such an extended look at this player, the 60 games last year, and they're like, eh, let's move on,especially because the HAL head coach, Mani Mulholtra,is the head coach now, and he doesn't like...
01:05:08And he won with him.And he's not like, I need this to keep this guy. That does concern me.It's like when Tampa moves off of a guy,and you're like, why is Tampa moving off?Not just Mani Malhotro.Ryan Johnson was his...GM.
01:05:21Yeah.So, yeah, that's concerning.Maybe they're just really like Quillan.Yeah.And maybe they'd like two prospects instead of one.But I think that's always going to sit in the back of my head.Nobody knows Ratu better than the Canucks and the two guys in charge with shipping him across the country. And I think.
01:05:37No one knows Jacob Quillan better than.I also want to say that I think the Leafs, more importantly, they ended up with the better player in this trade.Probably.And they ended up with an extra contract slot.Because I think, surprise, surprise, the Toronto Maple Leafs want to make a trade or two here during the season.I don't see Burr on their hockey DB.I don't think this player has played for them. No, he hasn't.
01:06:05He's a NCAA guy.Yeah, they sign him out of the NCAA to play for them.Yeah.And he has not played for them.Right.That, yeah, you know what?I think he was probably pretty down with the trade.Yeah, I think the contracts a lot is.
01:06:20something that's underrated here.Yes.Oh, yeah.I mean, what are you looking at?I'm just trying to figure out how to make a 10-minute video out of this bullshit. Now, so that was the game for the Leafs last night. We hope that's a one-off, but L.A. King's fans are like,I didn't think so.

01:08:48I'm not sure what would be scarier.Screamers or Jesse scream at screamers?Oh.Your scream is way scarier than that.No.Screamers is open from 7 to 11,Sundays and weekdays and 7 to midnightfor a little late night scare.

01:09:39Kevin Kurz. Also, weighing in, as you would expect, he's the athletic reporter, and he had a few good ones. The Flyers have 11 goals and nine games.Oh! No!The Flyers are 06 and 3 to start. He said, just a top to bottom organizational catastrophe at this point.Getting three points in the standings out of 11 goals and nine games, I'm going to say is impressive.
01:10:05Miracle.I'm going to say that's over a chance.Poor Joseph Wall. Now, longest winless streaks to start the season, if they lose one more game, they do not, sorry, not lose.lose, lose an overtime or lose.So a Gary point or clear loss. They will be tied with the thrashers of 0203,the flames of 95, 96,
01:10:29the Red Wings of 7576 for 10thin the longest winless streaks to start a season.Technically third.Technically, oh yeah, I guess technically third.Because you're right, the Pittsburgh Pirates of 2728.The hockey team. The North Stars 73, 77.The Sharks 95-96, the Coyote's 17-18, the Coyotes 21-22, and the Sharks 23-24 all had 11-game winless streaks.
01:10:57And the Rangers of 1943-44 pre-D day had a 15-game start to the season with no wins. But that is the, that's the company they're playing in here. And I have to say, like I know a week ago or three days ago or four days ago, everybody's like, no, no, organizations right behind Rick Tocket. You can't tell me they are anymore. You have, at some point, you got to be cutthroat about this. You got to move.I always laugh when we have this conversation.Because it happens probably not every year, but almost every year.
01:11:30Where we're like, no.It's so early.No.It takes, I think, three games to flip it.Especially this early because it's the percentage of,games.Yeah.So three games ago, their records, what?
01:11:52Oh, well, three.Well, they've lost six games. They have not won.I don't know exactly what it'd be, but it.Oh, you mean three games ago.Yeah.They're still winless is what it is.They win the next three.
01:12:03We drop the story immediately and we're like, yeah, rough start. We'll see how they get it back on track. You lose the next three? No, I'm sorry. You're not sitting here saying namaste the way you were for six.nine.We're starting to talk about records. We brought up the Pittsburgh Pirates.
01:12:23Hockey team.The hockey team?McCutcheon might be a better head coach.He might be.Yeah, that's 10% of your season.Yard sale.It's just gone.Like, you, so, okay, 18 points.
01:12:38You've left 15 of them on the table.I'm going to go out in a limb and say they don't recover from this.Oh, crazy.take. Like, let's say, okay, okay, let's do some math. How many points do the flyers have last year?92, I want to say 93-ish. I can look it up. So, but I can tell you automatically they're not makingthe playoffs then. Like, if you take last year's pace, 98. Okay, if they played it at 98's much better. If they played at 98 point pace, the rest of the season, they probably do not come close.Like, I'm talking the rest of their games.
01:13:25I'm not talking they finished with 98 points. If they finished with 98 points, I finish them.I don't think anybody's watched these nine games or any of them thinks the Flyers are going to be a playoff team.Yeah, they're screwed.Yeah.This thing's over. No, no, it's over. And it's hard over.
01:13:40and like Rick Tock, it's not even helping himself in any waywith the way he's managing his bench. There's so many complaints out of Flyers fansjust who's on the ice at what time. The game winning goal last night, his bottom two pair on his D are out there.Sorry, David Eurecheck, but you got kind of outbeat on that back play
01:14:00to the other side of the net.It was disgusting. And then the fours on the iceare two guys from the fourth lineand then one guy from the third line. And it was four minutes to goin the game and he's got his bottom lines out there and his bottom pairing.Everyone's like, what are we doing here?
01:14:16And then on top of that, he's trusting Michael Bunting in the most high leverage situation. That is not where Michael Bunting is receiving primo power play time on this team.Michael Bunting didn't have a job two weeks ago.And all of a sudden, he's one of the most dependable guys in Rick Tocke's eyes for the power play. And this is not Bunting's fault to be clear.No.No.No.
01:14:38This isn't anything on the players. This is the coach and his deployment of the players. So not only is Rick Tocket playing a system where his teams don't generate shots. They get just outshot in every single game. They're last in the league and shots on goal. And then now they're last in league and that. And then now his system where he's supposed to be really good at shot suppression, they're last in league and shots against as well.
01:15:04I think it's 20 goals, 20 shots on goal.they average a game and they're allowing like 31 or 32.If I'm not mistaken, Mitchcove is still the only flyer with multiple goals. So his system is more and he's playing the wrong guys at the wrong time.So he's bad at them. They are allowing, we talked about this last episode, but we'll do it again. He's bad at this.33.7 shots a game.
01:15:26Oh, so 33.3. Sorry.33.7 shots a game. And also goals against per game. Here's fun because I told you 11, they have 11 goals in nine games.1.22 goals four per game.3.56 goals.per game. You're not going to win a lot when that happens. And here's the fun part too. Oh,we love this. How is their penalty kill? Actually, it's a penalty kill is about mid. Their power playbecause they don't score any goals is last in the league. It's and you know who's got a worse power play
01:15:51percentage than them? Name the team. Those are there, Chicago. It'll blow your mind. It is notChicago, Jesse. Chicago 7th. It's going to be someone good based on what it is. It is somebody good. Dallas. No, somebody, somebody, somebody. Avalanche. Right in that era, but one more. Not the avalanche. Minnesota. One of the teams that Dylan Larkin would accept a trade to.Florida.Close.Vegas.Tampa.
01:16:11Tampa.7.4%.We did.You named all the Dylan Larkin.Philly's second last in Power Play?Philly's second last.7.4% to 7.7.Philly's 7.7.
01:16:22Dude, like I'm looking at their ice time from last night and I'm like, these numbers don't add up to,like, did they just, did they play shorthanded a lot?Their leader in Ice Time amongst Fores was Christian Dvorak with 1821.No one.else played 18 or more.Three forwards, this doesn't seem real.Three forwards played 17 minutes or more.Who was on the ice?
01:16:46He doesn't know what he's doing, Steve.Who was on the ice for your hockey team?He doesn't know what he's doing.Other than Travis Sandheim for like half an hour, just dying out there. You know what does, has moved from Toronto to Philly, not just Joseph Wall.Michael Bunting in the end of the, near the end of the end of the,the second period. There was about to be a penalty called.
01:17:09And the refs like, hold on a second.I'm calling embellishment on Michael Bunting. And the flyers were about to go on a power play to like get back in this game and maybethey're going to have a chance and they're like, no, bunting embellishment.I'll try and pull up the video for you. This is why I hammer the Stootula thing so hard.Because for most players, once a ref, because they're a cabal,Once a ref makes his mind up about you, the rest of them know and you're fucked forever.
01:17:45Maybe that's part of the reason why he wasn't signed for so long. His teams are like, okay.We don't want this guy.He scores at a half a point of game pace.He objectively knows how to do this. There's a lengthy track record of him knowing how to do this. The refs hate him. They hate his guts.
01:18:06Now it might be a dive because I watch Michael Bunting play hockey, and it might be.But it should be a dive on other guys.We don't have a Tic Tac, Tomar for the Flyers. So I don't have a video from it on Twitter.I'd have to go to the sports net app. That's a recession indicator.Go back to the game.We don't have a clip from a Flyers Red Wings game.
01:18:25Yeah.Well, that should. The embellishment penalty.Yeah, I can't really.Well, one thing I think we should bring up to the Canucks fans who have been just weighing in on this, the way Kings fans have been weighing in on Hiller. And Canucks fans have a lot of experience with this.A guy that I picked up in Fantasy Off Waivers,
01:18:41which I am not regretting at all,is Vassili Putkoulson. And Pods is a guy that was a high round draft pickand was thrown in the trash by the Canucks organization, mostly at the behest of their head coach,Rick Tockeet, who refused to resign there. And he is now playing top line minutes with McDavid and Dryside. And here, let me go, Vasili.
01:19:03There's no way to look at that as a victory.Oh, no.I've seen some cope.Like, well, guys, he's playing with McDavid.Seven goals. They don't put any asshole on McDavid's wing.Seven goals and seven games.Seven goals and seven games.
01:19:18Is he any asshole? They don't just put, call some guy up and throw him with McDavid. They did actually do that once.Yeah.Yeah.For like five seconds. They have done that a couple times. It didn't work.
01:19:29Right.Notably, it's very much working with him.And it's been working with him in dry saddle.a couple of years too.Yes.Not just McDavid.Guys.Seven games.
01:19:42As an experience,Coper,I know Cope when I see it.Here's the thing, but Colson in the first round last year, six points in six games. He had 10 points in their Stanley Cup runin 24, 25 in 22 games.
01:19:56He was good.He was good. This guy is a player, and he was drafted 10th overall in 2019,not all that long ago, although it is a lot longer than you'd think.I was at that draft and it was in Vancouver.Oh.
01:20:10And the whole building, like, because when you draft a guy in your building, everyone's supposed to go, yeah. And everyone kind of went, wonderful.Yeah, well, it turned out to be okay. And fun fact, Matt Bay Mitchcoff appears to be on the same track. And I think Bob Stauffer made that connection and I think he's right.I don't think this guy knows how to handle young players. He might not know how to handle any players. And if you look at young, old, who cares?
01:20:43Middle age. Can't handle them. And I do want to say that because, listen, I gave Rick talk at his flowersand ate a lot of crow when they went to the second round, seventh game against the Oilers. But when they hired him, you can go back and look at the tape.I was like, why?Look at his record.
01:20:58It's awful. And I know those coyotes guys, they all stick together.Like they're all, there's like a coyotes cabal of people that are like, you're in on, oh, you're in on the cabote. Here's the thing, though, not a lot of success follows a lot of those guys. And, and Rick obviously had that run.And Quinn Hughes, I think, loved him.But beyond that, it's, it's been pretty sparse this success.
01:21:20It really has. And, you know, yeah, he did get to the second real nice. You got to.But more than one player needs to like you.Actually, in Vancouver, that's not true if you want to keep Quinn.Oh, right.I thought the Flyers run last year was really cool.It was exciting.
01:21:34Because I thought it was all system-based.Like, I thought what he had, the way he had them playing was, was a really great way to get a team that didn't have the best roster.I don't think on paper we look at those Flyers teams and are like, oh, my gosh, this is one of the best teams in the East on paper. But the way he had them playing such hard-nosed defense got them to the second round.I'm very surprised they're worse.I'm surprised they're this bad.Yeah.And maybe that was a bit of a mirage.
01:22:03Listen, we did 32 team previews, and there was something I said in almost all of them. And like to the point where I was like, I'm starting to feel silly saying this over and over again. But I wanted to emphasize it because it's true. The teams at the top of the standings are not just good. They have everything go right for them. The teams at the bottom of the standings are not just bad. They have everything go bad for them. And so much of that is between the ears and behind the eyes.
01:22:32And you can't tell me these guys enjoy showing up to the rink right now.No.Like at all.Who would?Who would like going to work every day and knowing it's about to suck today? It's probably. And everybody's going to be on my ass because it's Philly and the people care about hockey. You know where it's probably fun showing up to the rink?
01:22:50Winnipeg.Look at everyone thought we were going to suck.We don't have Halibach and look, we're winning without them.Ah. You know where it'sWatch out nowwhere it's getting more and more funto show up to the rink?Detroit.
01:23:06Yep.Winning hockey.Detroit.It's watch out.They're interesting.They're not nearlyListen, it's still a catastrophe up there.But on the ice,
01:23:20they aren't this. They had the potential to be this.We all thought they were going to be this. They're not this.Wait till look.pointing at the stinking flyers.Hey, they won.I pulled up the ESPN feed on the Sportsnet app so I can show you the Michael Bunting flop.
01:23:37Anton Johansen cross checks him in front of the net.He also scored his first NHL goal last night. So congrats to him.Oh, good for Anton. That's amazing.Let me know. She's just going to show it.We obviously.
01:23:47Stephen Adam, what you think about this Michael Bunting embellishment should it have been called. Here, wait, let me look for him.Oh, the only 58 on the ice ever. What did you think?Sorry.Hold on.Do you want it again?Let me see it again.
01:24:00You want it again?Right in front here. There's gonna be a cross check right here, right here.Oh yeah. That takes to the level. He's going to tell like he got shot.So that is...Yeah, that's bad.
01:24:12Clearly a flop.That's so bad.It's a flop.That's so bad.This, my issue is not with the fact that it's not a dive.And that's obviously a dive.You know, Superman, man.It's a dive.
01:24:24He's Superman that ho.It's a dir.For sure.We see that every single Sends game.Oh, Steve.We do. No, I'm hammering the point.He's not wrong.Steven.
01:24:39No, I'm with you, Steve.Steven, followed by you're correct?No, you're right.Or like, you're asking for it.I'm asking for people to see the truth.From Sends fans.Yeah, you're right.Just like what am I doing?
01:24:53No, no, no, it's clearly a dive. That's a dive.I want to just to get a freeze frame on the flying partSoaringFlyingI'm Michael BuntingAnd I'm going through the airYeah what are we doing
01:25:10He could have just gone and got the puckRight in front of the net is where you're lookingBy the way here take the box and box down HaydenJust so everybody can see itThat's where we're looking yeahFlyingThat's there itYeah
01:25:20Oh my GodTim's doing so.This was 912 remaining in the second period. It's 1-1.You have a chance to go up on the power playbecause there's a cross-checkand you don't get that opportunitybecause bunting decided to go for a little trip.
01:25:38It is a dive.The refs made the correct call,but I'm just saying,usually reputation plays into it.That's all.Okay.And he's earned his.He's earned his.
01:25:51Very funny.Screamers is back at Assembly Park and Vaughnfrom October 9th to 31st,located at 80 interchangeway in Vaughan this year.Features seven haunted attractions,120 plus live actors who are not going to feel like actors are going to feel like real goo.And rides and entertainment too now new this year at Disassembly Park.Oh my goodness,
01:26:13they're going to take my limbs. An outdoor scare zone where the scares continue between the haunted housesand you do not have to be 19 plus to enter screamers. There is 19 plus licensed vampire lounges, you know. Are they going to serve blood?I don't know.I don't know.I have to go find out, but B-19 plus for that.
01:26:30Screamers is probably not recommended for children under 10, so, you know, just play it by ear. Also not recommended for Jesse Blakes who have scary screams in and of themselves.I'm not sure what would be scarier.Screamers or Jesse scream at screamers.Oh.Your scream is way scarier than that.No.Screamers is open from 7 to 11, Sundays and weekdays and 7 to midnight for a little late night scare.

01:27:15Okay, so I got, I've got, we've got a lot to get through in the last little bit of this show.but I want to talk about Jesse specifically requested this since the Detroit Red Wings have come up.Chris Illich spoke to the athletic.Oh.And, you know, when they said sell the team, what did Chris Illich have to say about that? So, okay. The first team.I've found a buyer.
01:27:39Fans absolutely have the right to tell us how they feel.I found a buyer. That's what I was like. This is their team.So I understand.I was like, I thought it was funny. This is their team.So I understand the fan frustration and I share it to be frank.
01:27:50My thoughts are that the fans want to see.a team win on the ice and I do too.And as a person that's accountable for the franchise, it's why I made the change in thegeneral manager's chair and it's why I'm so deliberate in our search. The thinking is always that the search is going to be quick. So you don't know how these things are going to go, Illage said.So you miscalculated, got it.And I would say to you sitting here today, this search could end soon during the season.
01:28:14It could be the end of the season. As I said before, I'll make the hire when I find the right person. It's just too important for the organization. We've got to find the right leader.Shut up ChristopherWhatCome onYou know what
01:28:29The team's winning games nowYou don't need to say anythingNoBut it's fun when he doesI hateWhen he keeps going back to this wellIt can happen tomorrowIt could happen 10 years from now
01:28:41That's literally a guyThat doesn't want to propose to youOh my goshThat's what it isThat's straight up what it isIt can happen at any timeSo can everythingHe sounds like AI.
01:28:54He sounds like AI.So when's the hockey team going to be good?Ah, it could be good today. It could be good tomorrow. What are you talking about, Chris? What are you talking about? And so there's a couple other, I think, major points. What do you think you could have done differently
01:29:13over the last six months?Girl.Girl?Let's see her.By the way, big shout out to Max Boltman from The Athletic for this.Who's been a fantastic reporter for Detroit.I think what is happening, the direction I'm taking the franchise is the right direction.Illich said, it's one of the most important things I can do.
01:29:30And one of the biggest contributions I can have to this franchise is to go out and find an innovative difference making leader who's going to be able to help us build that championship team again.I'm determined to find the right leadership and I'm not really looking backwards to say, should this have happened or could this have happened?I'm looking forward and very focused on finding our next leader. So he does not answer the question. What do you think you could have done differently?Nothing.I'm going to be, can I be an honest friend?Be an honest friend.
01:29:58I didn't hear a word you just said.Oh, okay. That's how boring that was.I was sitting here the whole time.I was staring there and not a single word penetrated my consciousness. He said, I'm, he did say, I'm looking for it.Sorry, I'm not really interested in looking backwards is what he said. That's the key part of that answer.
01:30:16Anytime you get a big answer like that. That's not true.Highlight the sentence that matters the most. The last time we heard from you, Chris, you brought up a line from the 40s.So yes, you are interested in looking backwards when it suits you.Bro, your team's winning game.Shut up.I also get better at this.
01:30:35When he talks about this is the direction I'm taking the franchise, it just screams to me that he wants to have his hands on everything. He's still so involved in this thing. And that's not where he should be at all.You should hire hockey leaders, which he hasn't done because they don't have anybody in charge. And he needs to move out of the way.But the way he's answering these questions is like, I'm going to be the leader here and get everything straight and narrow for this Detroit Red Wings team. But everything that he's done since he's been in charge has proven that like he doesn't know how to do that.Yeah.
01:31:07Sean Horkoff finally did something. So it's time for me to do another interview to soak up some of that shine.Go away.Hey, I wish he wouldn't have such a prominent role in the day-to-day operations of the Red Wings for the sake of Red Wings fans.So does absolutely everybody.Last one.Rebuild?I'm accountable for the direction of the franchise and also for finding the right folks to lead it, Illich said.
01:31:33It's been very consistent what my role has been, which is to find great leaders to provide them with the resources and the authority to do their jobs and then support that. And that's what I've consistently done.I've done it with Steve.I do it with Sean.it with our next leader of hockey ops. I'm not going to sit here and act like a GM, he added. That's a question I think is a really good question for our next GM. Sean and I talk aboutthose types of things all the time. Oh, sorry, Sean and I talk about those types of things andall types of issues. He shares with me his thoughts, his strategy. I hear them. We have healthy
01:32:03discussions about them. I support him in the direction he wants to go on the whole host of hockeyoperation type issues. I'm not going to backseat drive, but me and the driver haveconversations all the time about taking that left turn. And I provide healthy feedback on what they should do when the car in front of them isbreaking. But I'm not driving. But I also pay for the car and the driver. And this is my car that my daddy gave to me because I inherited it as a child.
01:32:32And I'm not back to you driving though. But I do grab the wheel every now and again.Jesse.What the fuck? Here, I'm turning.I'm turning my back on them.I think Adam's tricking us.Oh, yeah?
01:32:44I think Adam's doing a bit.Wait, what is he doing?Adam's doing a bit.What's the bit?Here's the bit.Okay.Remember the last time we read a Chris Illidge interview?Yes.
01:32:53He's just reading quotes from that. There is no new article. He's just reading quotes from that.Nothing he's saying is new or has anything to do with anything.I wish he's just reading. That would have been great.Adam, do you understand you could have done that and no one would have noticed?Damn it.
01:33:10Including the audience. No one would have noticed.to God, I wish I had thought. I now do wish I had thought of that. The next time he does an interview.Which interview is it from? Who is?Honestly, Adam, you should just wait three weeks until I forget about this. There is no article and just tell me that there is.You should wait three weeks. I will forget about this and just be like, well, we got some new quotes from Chris Sillich.
01:33:31And spend five minutes just make me look like an idiot. The problem with that is there would be a significant portion of the audience who would think the interview is real, even if I say it's not.Because people have pay attention. They're vacuuming.Let's not spread disinformation. We don't want to be a miss.We listen,we try to get things right. There's four people in this room.
01:33:48That's it.That's it.People want to watch. We're just doing this for ourselves. We're just doing this for.You upload these? We just do this for, just to chill.
01:33:58I mean,we do.We did when we had no audience.Adam,I act like a fucking lunatic.I know.That's crazy.You wouldn't believe how many.
01:34:07You let people watch. You ever go on social media? No.You see the clips. What do people say about me?You know what?probably best you didn't know.Sometimes it's none of your business, you know.
01:34:17Remember that picture I did doublemasked in the car with a crown?Yeah. You didn't put that online, do you?I think you put that online.I think you voluntarily put that on the internet.I don't have Twitter.Oh, yeah.
01:34:29I have an intern that manages that shit.Is that out there? It's out there.I'm sorry.I'm sorry.Yeah, I know. The dam is broken, my friend. You've been outed.
01:34:40We got to stop this.Do you think Darren Farris has ever heard anything?you said about it because these are actuallyuploaded. I mean, I only saywhat I say about Darren Ferris because I knowhe's never going to hear. Yeah, you're not in thatI wouldn't justcheer for him to lose clients in
01:34:55millions of dollars in publicbecause he's awful. You would never say that into a microphone. I would neversay that. I'd upload it to the internet.No. No. You're allowedto have a difference of opinion and think somebody'snot good at their job and they're allowedto have somebody on staff who sends every
01:35:11clip to them that you post.about him.But why do we post them? That's true. You're right. We should just do this first. That is a good question. Now, all right.
01:35:21Now, are you confident with the direction of the Detroit Red Wings now that ChrisIllich has said that he's in charge? The DeBrin'Cat thing, I can't, I can't say that it doesn't make things better. It does.It does.It objectively does.Larkin playing well does.I think it comes down to two things.
01:35:39Edvinson and whatever that deal comes in at, just sign them. You guys have the money.Who cares?Oh, they're worried about literally they're probably like a million or two apart. And I'm telling you with the cap going to 150 million in the next few years, who cares?Just sign them.I got to, I got to say, Dylan Larkin looks a lot smarter than Connor Hullabuck.Oh, we'll talk about.
01:35:59That's easy. That's easy to do.By the way, CJ's show today, big piece about Connor Hullabuck.Did you hear that?No.Okay.Where he basically said like, and I'll let him explain it more on the show.I'll give you the one sentence headline.
01:36:12Scouts are not sure what kind of Connor Hullabuckthey'd even be getting traded for now at this point. This man's 33.Yeah, you got it.And he's a goalie. You got to play, dude.Start setting an alarm, Connor.Go to work.
01:36:24Screamers is back at Assembly Park in Vaughn from October 9th to 31st,located at 80 Interchange Way in Vaughn this year.Features seven haunted attractions,120 plus live actors who are not going to feel like actorsare going to feel like real ghoul. And rides and entertainment too now new this year at Disavis.assembly park. Oh my goodness. They're going to take my limbs. An outdoor scare zone where the scarescontinue between the haunted houses and you do not have to be 19 plus to enter screamers.
01:36:52There is 19 plus licensed vampire lounges, you know. Are they going to serve blood? I don't know.I don't know. I have to go find out, but be 19 plus for that. Screamers is probably not recommendedfor children under 10, so you know, just play it by ear. Also not recommended for Jesse Blake's whohave scary screams in and of themselves. I'm not sure what would be scarier. Screamers orJesse scream at screamers.Oh.Your scream is way scarier than that.No.
01:37:19Screamers is open from 7 to 11,Sundays and weekdays and 7 to midnightfor a little late night scare.Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets available atscreamers.comstions encouraged, but no masks or weapons, please, obviously.Yeah! Now, one of the things I dowant to talk about, last
01:37:34night and this week,we have seen a lot of storiesabout low ticket sales. And I want to startwith Vegas, which was the team.So it was notable mostly because it's always about the fucking Leaves. But Toronto and Vegas played the-It was shocking.
01:37:51It was the first time Vegas has not sold out a home game ever. And you look at Vegas home games. On the list of games, you would be like, well, slam dunks to be sold out would be theLeafs, purely based on tourism.Yes.I did not realize how small Vegas was.Well, Vegas is small, but it's-It's smaller than Winnipeg.
01:38:14Yes.Lots of money, though. The difference is the concentration of wealth is much higher.Lots of money.Like last time I was there,I couldn't believe how many trains were trains. How many planes were taken off and landing and taken off and landing?I would assume absolutely every Canadian game would be sold out.
01:38:33Yep.Now, so I'm just pulling something up on the internet while we're talking.Because here's the deal.So Jesse Granger wrote a great article about.this. Sinbin wrote one and and and and Jesse Granger goes into a much more in depth and I think a lot much more technical look at what happens here. Um, so they announced the attendance at last Thursday against Toronto and it was 15,977, which was 1390 short of capacity in the first not, first announced non sellout in regular season history after 37 27 consecutive sellouts. That's a lot of empty.seats. Now, what I was pointed to by somebody within the NHL, because I retweeted that article, the Sinbid one, is, hey, there's something you're missing here. And the something I was missing, and Jesse gets into it great in the, so I'm just read from Jesse. Not me. No, yeah, Jesse Granger
01:39:31from the Vegas Golden Knights of the Athletic. He said, obviously, it's certainly not the success onthe ice, but there are plenty of potential factors, starting with the economy as a whole, gas, groceries, other essentials. They're exploding. There's no way to say.it. Like you can you can make it political if you want to. Tariffs the war in Iran, the war with betweenUkraine and Russia. What's going on with Israel, Palestine, in the middle. It's all driving pricesup for everything. Mini eggs. Mini eggs are expensive. Yeah, offseason mini egg time. They're veryexpensive. And the city experience. Is that a thing? I was trying to buy them. I'm like 1399.In 2020. Just he's just telling me to stop eating. We have a big thing of mini eggs. I got to reload them.
01:40:12like there's no expense. He's right, though. In 2025, the city of Las Vegas experienced a 7.5% drop in visitors compared to 2024.To date in 2026, that number is roughly flat, 0.1% drop.So it's roughly flat. But imagine you run a business, any entrepreneurs here, if you see a 7.5% reduction in revenue, that is huge.Yeah.
01:40:36And so, and here's the thing with Vegas before I get to the other reason.there's been a lot of complaints on TikTok, not about the Golden Knights, but about Vegas, because most of these casinos are now owned by private equity. So not only, you know, Vegas used to be the normal person's thing. You would go, if you made like a normal, normal salary, you'd be able to stay at a pretty goodhotel, get free drinks all night, eat well, park for free, and you'd have a fun time for the weekend, and then you'd go home and tell everybody about it.I remember when I used to live in Calgary, I was doing radio out there.
01:41:06flights from Vegas to Calgary were like $100, super easy. You used to live in Calgary and I never went.I never went. He's going to stampede all the time.Big deal out there I was on my morning show in Calgary.I'm an idiot.Did you ever take advantage of the very cheap flights from Calgary to Vegas?I have never been to Vegas.Oh.
01:41:25At all?Wow.It's not the first time I've told you guys.Yeah, no, no.Yeah, I know. But like Adam, you should do the bit.I know.I will forget.
01:41:33You're right.I'm telling you.I don't know.That's the thing.But yes.Did you have friends?I've never been to Vegas.Right in town.
01:41:42It is one of my regrets.I don't even think he'll get to Vegas before 40.When you were out there, did you have friends and stuff that would go down?Absolutely.Especially from the rigs.So what you'd have, everybody from Northern Alberta is working the rigs,
01:41:54most of them are east coasters. They come down, they get into Edmonton or they get into Calgary, and they're flying right up to Vegas. That's why the flights were so cheap, because there's so many going back and forth. It was like 250 bucks or something.Yeah.
01:42:04You could literally like, that's just like,I could do that a week.Yes. That's what they did. It's not unreasonable. There are more expensive train tickets in this. Yeah. Those guys are working three or fourweeks in a row sometimes and they get a week off. So you take four or five days, you go to Vegas, blow off some steam and then you get back up to the rigs. Like that's what they do. And so,and I don't blame them. Those are fucking hard jobs. And so, um, you know, obviously there's been a
01:42:29reduction in Canadians going, but also in an American's going and international visitors going. So, and, and here's the thing. You go to Vegas.Like, talk to Tim Horanee about how expensive it is.And he can write this stuff off because it, but he can't because it's in the States.Um, he can write some of it off, but he, and he gets a per diem, I think, from TSN.But to go for breakfast during the F1 Grand Prix at a normal breakfast place or even in the hotel, he said to me last year, it was every, every morning between 60 and $75.Oh, wow.Breakfast?
01:43:00Breakfast.American.American.So like $100.And you're paying hotel and resort fees just.So you get your hotel, but then you're also paying a 20% fee on top of that just for existing. Then you're paying, if you rent a car, you're paying to park it.That's $50 or $60 a night if you're lucky.
01:43:17And so they nickel and dime you basically everywhere. So what it's become is, can my corporation afford to send us?Because there's a lot of trade shows and things that happen in Vegas too.Like that's a huge part of their economy. And it used to make a lot of sense because, well, hey, this is really cheap and this is fun and gives our employees a break.I had a guy that I knew that worked in concrete and he went to the concrete convention in Vegas.Yes, there is one every year. And so that is dipping into people's expendable income.
01:43:46The other thing, and this is interesting that I was completely unaware of, is they are changing how they sell their tickets. So before this season, a huge cut of the tickets that they sold went to brokers. And the way, and I had to like do a whole search.on how this works.Like scalpers? No.Resellers is what.Resellers.
01:44:10Jesse Granger calls them.Yeah.So what happens is...Call them what you want. And this happens in all major markets.I'm going to mention a major major team in a second here. That's not even NHL.That's much bigger.
01:44:21Sure.So basically what they do is they look at this as like it's a portfolio.Okay.So I know that for a Toronto Maple Leafs game, Montreal Canadiens game, Colorado game,Dallas game, you know, whatever's in the area.I know as a broker, if I buy a thousand season tickets, okay?I know that those games are my profitable games. And you also, if you're one of these people, make money on service fees.
01:44:51Because oftentimes they're a company or a brand with a front-facing thing directly to an audience. And so, you know, when you buy a Ticketmaster, for instance, you know, you have those dumb service fees that are there for no reason.Well, that's where most of the money is made. It's not just profitability on the tickets that are in high demand. It's also the service fees on top of it.It's garbage. It's garbage. But then the flip side of that is, okay, so let's say it's a Tuesday night game and team that nobody cares about and fans that don't travel for this team are in town.
01:45:26And it's an hour before game time. And I got all this inventory.I'm going to lose money on this game.but what I should do is at least try to make some of it back.So I'm going to make every seat that I have available for $6 or $7.And they just flood the market with it.And so there was a Red Wings game like that.Sure.
01:45:48Early in the season. So what these ticket brokers do is they'll flood the market. Now, I don't think the Red Wings thing is the same though.Okay.In this instance. And I'll tell you why.So they know they make profit on the big games. They know they're going to lose money on the non-big games.
01:46:00But the profit's so big on the big games.they're okay with taking a loss on the little gamesbecause they can just flood the marketand get some of their money back for these ticketsand what that does is it allows for Vegasor other teams in the past to have full sellout seasonsbecause hey we did sell these ticketsI don't know if any fans are in the seats for them
01:46:24but we sold the tickets. It's why Toronto was selling tickets to Costco last yeartowards the end of the season because...Which is crazy. You can buy Leafs tickets at Costco.since when? You can't do it now, I don't think.Yeah, you can.
01:46:36Oh, you can't?Yeah, many NHL teams have started doing that. They're still doing it.So Vegas was getting an enormous amount of complaints from their fans because the fans were saying, hey, A-holes, I'm the guy buying 41 or now 42 nights a year. And I'm trying to sell my tickets that, because I can't go to every game.Season ticket holders are a special breed. You've got to bend your whole life around that team.
01:46:59Very anecdotal story.Please.My father-in-law has to.go to Vegas for work. And this is, I think, in Vegas's second year in the NHL. His, like, cab driveris talking about how he's a season seat holder. And he sells tickets to, like, the Canadian games. And he's able to go to everything else basically for free. Yeah. He, like, Calgary comes to town,Edmonton comes to town, Toronto comes to town. He makes enough money off of those games that therest of his tickets for the rest of the season are free. It's a,
01:47:33It's something like 30, 25, 30 games. And Toronto used to be able to do that until we've capped that. You're not allowed to do that anymore. You're not allowed to sell them for face value. But like I'm saying, that's just a guy.Yeah, well, but this is the thing. It's just like a guy who does Uber. That guy, though, is pissed about that.
01:47:48Yeah.Because now I'm trying to drop my face value season tickets that I've already paid for.And I'm your best customer.I'm your best customer.I'm your biggest fan. These ticket agents don't give a shit.I'm your fan.And they've been complaining of the organization for the better part of
01:48:0210 years about this. And so the organization finally said, okay, you know what? We're not sellinganything to ticket brokers. So the Vegas Golden Knights actually, in my mind, deserve a littlebit of applause for saying we're not going to do that. The problem is, and we've seen this inmultiple markets, that when you make that switch, there's a rough adjustment period. And it's notnot anything. They've switched their reseller partner where they're doing a very small percentagenow to the ticket broker. Right. Now, a 10% of the ticket broker.Right. Now, a team that I think you'll find very interesting that also went through this are the New York Knicks. The New York Knicks used. So they have a long contentious history with ticket brokers. But they have gone, they basically, Dolan cracked down on reselling and blamed aggressive ticket brokers. And their ticket brokers in New York are no joke, dude. And automated buying rings for inflating prices and creating.
01:49:00artificial scarcity that then makes the Knicks look terrible. And he's like, I'm protecting my brand. And so there was also some internal scalping things. You can look all this up.But a lot of these brokers, when he stopped working with them, took him to court. And he fought every one of them. And from what I can dig up, he's won every single time.Because he's like, these guys are not serving my customer base.
01:49:26My specifically my best customer base, which is my season ticket holders.right? I wish the least would look at this. And we are, you know, we're screwing our own people here. And from what I heard from a source, the source told me when the Knicks did this, it tookthe Knicks in New York three years to get back to the levels they were doing with the brokers. So it is an adjustment. Now, I've reached out to a couple of other NHL organizations and I'm waitingto hear back. But the Oilers last night, and I don't know if I don't know what.what's going on with Edmonton. I don't know what the market factors here are.But Jason Greger said the attendance was 16,176. That's 2171 empty seats for the Oilers.
01:50:09That's absolutely terrifying. The Chicago. They are as close as they could possibly come tobe in the only show in town. Yes, they have a CFL team. Yeah, but they have Connor McDavid.Yeah. They're the only show in town, whatever town they're in. Like, yes. That's a box office team.Every single Oilers game should be sold out. The Blackhawks attendants. Now, I know they're not great, but this is the smallest crowd according to Bem Popeof the Badaard eratechnically the smallest sinceMarch 28th, 2023
01:50:3615,000 028.Now I don't know what their actualattendances but I would imagine it's 17 or 18,000like most arena.I think it's above.United Center is one of the larger capacityWell there you go.And here's the biggest one.
01:50:51This is the craziest one.Bob Nightingale.Attendance last night,49,104.This team has the biggest seating capacity in the MLBbut failed to sell out any of their four postseason home games.Who are they? The Dodgers?
01:51:07The Los Angeles Dodgers.Whoa.Now, I don't know if that comes down to a similar thing as the Vegas Golden Knights.I only know the Knights one because there's been articles written about it.But I think there's a couple of factors here. The reality is prices are through the roof now. They are.Not just for tickets, but for everything.
01:51:29grocery is everything. Okay. And they've done nothing but explode since the pandemic and specificallyin the last year and a half through the roof on everything. Okay. We know the reasons why we don'tneed to get into them. You guys get bombarded with that in the news every day. Okay. Beyond that, and Pablo Torreys mentioned this on his show. At some point, we are going to reach max capacitywith how much it costs to be a sports fan. The sports bubble. The sports bubble. When you thinkabout like the NFL, Jesse, how much does it cost to be?able to watch every NFL game. It's like...
01:52:01In Canada, it's pretty easybecause we have DeZoneand they have everything. But I mean, in the States,it's like...In the States is ridiculous. It's like $1,000 or whatever, yeah.Yeah.
01:52:08American.In Canada, you got to have Prime. You got to have TSN.And then you got to have SportsNet Plus premium.Right? That's roughly $600 a year. That's a Leafscape.A Leafscape.
01:52:23That's a Leafscape. And so...I'm not doing both.Yeah.And so that is...I might not do one. That is what is so interesting about this is that people are like it's so expensive already at home. And then I got to go to the arena.
01:52:38Like think about L.A.L.A. traffic. What a pain in the ass it is to get to Dodgers Stadium. And then you get there.Remember we did, we didn't do.It wasn't a fat guy corner, but we talked about in the new arena, Rogers Arena in Edmonton, how much the food cost from from, from, from, from Rexall place to we did do this. The Bobby Knicksburger.
01:52:58Well, I was after that. That was Rexall place.I'm insisting.I will forget. You should do this bit.But the Rogers, when it moved to Rogers Arena, the food prices and beer prices essentiallydoubled. So it's not just paying for parking.
01:53:11It's not just that hour to get there sometimes and the hour to get home. It's also when you get there, how insane everything costs. And this is where we will reach max capacity. We will. And, you know, people are going, well, that'll affect the salary cap.No, it won't.because TV rights are still going to be TV rights.TV rights drive the salary.
01:53:30More people are going to watch TV.You know what's going to really take off in the years to comeis conversations with the people you live with.I think can I invest stock in conversations with people?Because that's the only thing that's free.Yeah, I don't know how like the average person affords to go to multiple games a year. You probably get one of those because like Steve said, an $800 night. And that's a ridiculous amount to pay.
01:53:54Just go watch your sports team for three hours. Two and a half hours.Yeah, maybe it's a three-hour thing. And then you add an hour on each side for your commute. And it's not, it doesn't seem like it's going to be worth it with the way the prices are. What is the value proposition of that? And, hey, last night you went to the Leafs game. You spent $800 and you got to see six minutes of Gavin McKenna.
01:54:14Yeah, no, I'm not going. So this is the thing. They're going to have to deal with. This is a major problem. And the Vegas Golden Knights are trying to do right by their fans.I don't know about Chicago.I don't know about Edmonton.and I don't know about the Dodgers.
01:54:27Wasn't Montreal not a sell it?Montreal was not a salad as well.Montreal?The Bell Center.Yeah.The Bell Center.And it's a good team.Yep.
01:54:35Oilers and it's a good team.Vegas and obviously it's a good team. The NHL for many years, guys, has been what's considered a gate-driven league, right? So much of the money came from people going to the game. Now it's becoming more of a television league, which I think puts it in a healthier place. And what the owners need to consider with their dynamic pricing
01:54:55and their algorithms andall that is you now need to make a great entertaining product on the ice, which means you'regoing to have to bring the ticket prices down to a respectable level and the food and concessionsprices down to a respectable level. And the reason you need to do that is because you need tocreate an environment that somebody watching on TV wants to be at. And so you can gouge people, but you can't gouge them everywhere, rich people. Everywhere all of the time.Give them a break somewhere.right? And I think that's what the Knights are trying to do, at least with their season ticket holders.
01:55:31I don't know about the other teams yet.I'm excited for SportsNet Plus to cost more next season again. It'll double.Guys, I'm telling you it's going to double over three years. How many Canadian teams make the playoffs? Two, three? This year?Yeah. All of them.Edmonton.
01:55:43You know what? You're right.Ottawa, Montreal, I think, are locks. After that, I don't know.I was just going to say to Adam's point about when a team moves from an old arena to a new one.I was seeing people talk about reing up their flames tickets, their season tickets while they're moving into their new building.Someone was saying that it was like $14,500 for their tickets. When they moved to the new arena, it's going to more than double for their season season season.
01:56:11Yeah, that happened with Bill's fans as well when they moved to the new Highmark Stadium.I don't know how many.Mr. Pagula was just like, okay, I'm going to charge everybody millions of dollars to sit in my stadium.I don't know how many corporations they think there are.No, it's not enough.Like in Toronto, there's a lot of law firms. There's a lot of accounting firms. There's a lot.
01:56:33In Buffalo?Like New York, there is?Buffalo? There are not enough corporations to fill every seat of every building for every sporting event and every concert.Yes.And can we get a grip? The PWHL's here. The WNBA's here.
01:56:51The Hamilton Hammers.I told you guys.electric. Yeah, there's other options. There are options. You don't need to godo the $300 ticket for the Leafs so you cango do something else. That's a lot cheaper.I got the Jens. Even the Marleys.Yep. I'll go to the Jens. Yeah.
01:57:04The Marlies. 100%. Anyway, that just thought I'd let you know. That's kind of what the story is there. And we missed the Dallas thingabout how they're funding their arena with education funds. But we can ignore that part. I haven't readthat article yet. The Dallas thing of signingDavid Perron? Yeah, that's the thing we wantto say. Noted Alan Walsh client, David Perron
01:57:22playing his 20th season with the Dallas Star, so congratulations.More important than everything we've said today.Apologized to Brady Kachuk.I apologize and thank God I had himI had him dressed last night because I actually got the points for him.You missed the line.I was rooting for Brady Kachuk.I was mad at him for not producer.
01:57:39When he's pointless, it's a lot louder than when he's scoring back-to-back hatcher.I mentioned it earlier in the show.I will mention it again.Brady Kichuk, you have my full apologies and keep kicking assbecause I really need to start winning.I'm 0-2 to start the season. What do you think about his comments?about the Florida Panthers being the best fans in the NHL.
01:57:59Did you see that? You know what? The ones that stuck through them in their shitty years, those are great fans.So what I was going to say is so in his post-game.I actually donate that. After he has the hatcher,he's sitting on the bench and they're doing the in-orina interview.
01:58:13And he's like, they're thank you the best fans in the NHL.And I'm like, you know what? For how much they had to go through to get to this point where they have twoStanley Cups. They're pretty hardcore fans of Florida. To be clear, I'm not laughing at the idea that the Panthers fans are best fans of theNHL.I'm laughing at he's been there for a week and a half.
01:58:34Also.And he's just playing the hits. Please do not think that that's not a dig at the sense. He's trying to do it.Everything we think Brady is trying to do, he's doing it.When's his return to Ottawa? It's the 21st or 24th of November, isn't it?It's November.
01:58:52I'm watching.I don't know.Anyway.I'm watching unless it's blacked out, then I'm not.I think he's taking a dig there.Yep.Yeah.Having a laugh.
01:59:01Yep.I think Sends fans supported him mighty fine, by the way.I think he's just trying to get himself into a place where he can charge the same as his brother for an autograph signing.I think that's all. We'll leave it there. Now, CJ's show is out.Watch the CJ show.Steve Daigle.
