Starting point is 00:00:00 This BBC podcast is supported by ads outside the UK. Ever feel like car shopping is designed to make you second guess yourself? Is this a good price? Am I making the right choice? With CarGurus, you don't have to wonder. They have hundreds of thousands of cars from top-rated dealers and advanced search tools, deal ratings and price history. So you know a great deal when you see one. That's cargurus.ca.
Starting point is 00:00:27 cargurus.ca. BBC Sounds. Music, radio, podcasts. If you had to become a kitchen utensil, which one would you pick? It's an air fryer. Because I'd be an air fryer. You're an air fryer.
Starting point is 00:00:44 Yeah, but then you use too much. People take advantage of you. And they don't clean you sometimes. Well, hello. Welcome to the Toonie and Rousseau Show with me, Vic Hope. I am here with two of football's most famous friends. It's Ella Toon and Alessia Rusa. There's nothing off limits.
Starting point is 00:01:11 It's all on the table. So get ready to discuss everything and anything with Ella and Les. Hiya. Morning. Woohoo. We have had such a huge reaction to this pod. Thank you all so much for listening. Like, it really does mean the world.
Starting point is 00:01:27 I'm so glad that you've been enjoying it. And we've always tried to include in each episode one or two questions from our listeners. But for today, we're going to do something a little bit different. So we're going to dedicate this entire pod to listener questions. There have been so many, and we just want to get through them. Like there's lots of people want to know about you. Nosy parkers. Well, yes.
Starting point is 00:01:51 Well, yes. Some of them are slightly bizarre. We'll get to them a little bit later on. My inbox has been full. Everyone wants to get hold of you. They're like, can you pass this on to them? Can you pass this on to them? So I've thrown a few in as well, if that's okay.
Starting point is 00:02:04 No worries. That is okay. And we will start with this one from Abs, who says, if you could release any piece of Toonie and Russo pod merch, what would you pick? Oh, maybe a cap. Would we like a cap? I was going to say cap.
Starting point is 00:02:20 I thought you were going to say cap. Yeah, a cap would be nice. We like a cap, don't we? Well, I mean, I never wear them. Yeah, but you do like them. I We like a cap don't we Well I mean I never wear them Yeah but you do like them I like them but I just never wear them I should wear them more Yeah why not let's release a cap
Starting point is 00:02:31 A cap over a bucket hat Maybe let's just do hats A hat range Berets, woolly hats Beanie Cowboy hats A whole range So range so here for this why discriminate let's get every hat yeah perfect thank you abs that's your answer is hats and this one came up a few times you are
Starting point is 00:02:57 only allowed to eat one meal for the rest of your lives what are you choosing we always play this game we do like to play this game, yeah. Can I try and say yours and you try and say mine? Go on then. Okay. I reckon you could get mine. You're going to have a steak.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Yeah. Chips. Yeah. An egg. Yeah. Well done. And a bit of Diane sauce. And a bit of Diane sauce on the side.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Yeah. What's Diane sauce? Like mushroomy. Oh yeah, nice. Yeah, that's a good one. That's well done. I'm going to go for you on the side. Yeah. What's Diane sauce? Like mushroomy. Oh, yeah, nice. Yeah, that's a good one. That's well done. I'm going to go for you. Sunday dinner.
Starting point is 00:03:29 Yeah. What meat? What meat? Chicken. I don't mind chicken. Beef? Yeah, beef. Okay, and your dessert is going to be?
Starting point is 00:03:43 Oh, this is hard. Yeah, this is hard because it depends what mood i'm in half the time you like a cookie dough i do but i weren't thinking of that i know cheesecake yeah cheesecake with a bit of a pouring cream do you like the baked cheesecake or do you like the other kind you know the one that's biscuit and then it's more fluffy. Yeah, that one. Biscuit and fluffy, yeah. No, me too. I had a lovely Terry's chocolate orange one not long ago.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Oh. Yeah, it was gorgeous. Oh, it's nice when you've got the richness along with the tang. Yeah, it was. All right, this is like not, I'm not going to get this from a restaurant, but this is like my favourite dessert, but I never really have it, but I do love it. You might not get it.
Starting point is 00:04:22 You go on, tell me. Jam roly-poly. Oh, nice, with custard? Yeah. Have you me jam roly-poly oh nice with costa yeah have you had jam roly-poly you know what maybe like at school yeah i used to like years ago yeah doesn't harry redknapp have a have a line of jam roly-poly does he that's a real niche in the market i have a feeling that he mentioned remember when he was on i'm a celeb get me out of here i have a feeling he mentioned jam roly-poly's quite a lot and then it was his you know they have their heaven meal or whatever yeah towards the end and then some genius marketer went let's put his face on jam roly-poly's very clever yeah that's impressive maybe you should try it compete in that market now that
Starting point is 00:05:00 you've mentioned it on this illustrious podcast yeah you've got competition harry redknapp what's your meal oh start main dessert thing is right when you ask this question i'm always thinking i'm on death row well that's what we do yeah yeah so if i am last meal before yeah if that is the case then i'm going for my mom's home cooking yeah i think oh that's a great my mom's a great cook too so it'd be um we have this nigerian dish um okra soup which is like a stew with loads of meat it's like a stockfish kind of base and then okra, spinach, vegetables, lots of spice. Luckily, we're not on death row. So that's okay.
Starting point is 00:05:51 This is from Fran. What is your favorite gift that you've been given by a fan? Hey, I'll tell you what yours was. It was like molten brown. And Jo Malone. And Jo Malone, like hand gel and shower gel and all that yeah I had a fan that gave me that every single time I went to Brighton away yeah he must have been a local Brighton fan and he used to give me like body lotion body cream wow I wonder why he felt you
Starting point is 00:06:19 needed the air he must have thought I didn't stink. Maybe he's thinking, you know, I watch her, she's working hard, she's, you know, obviously sweating because it's very physical.
Starting point is 00:06:29 She deserves a nice shower. Yeah. That'd be nice. Yeah. Someone got given a phone once. A brand new iPhone. That's too far. Are we sure it's new
Starting point is 00:06:40 and not tapped? Well, tapped. Probably. I've been given a lot of chocolate and stuff yeah i can get given crisps after a game and i enjoy that yeah that's nice it's great yeah a lot of chocolates got a lot of dime bars um a lot of dairy milk caramels yeah a lot of it yeah i enjoy it because after a game you can have a little treat can't you yeah and when you walk onto the bus and someone's got like a bag of crisps for you it's just
Starting point is 00:07:10 really nice it's the little things isn't it just go over and collect all your presents thank you yeah so if you're listening they appreciate the chocolate yeah go for it uh what is your biggest footballing ick that has been asked by aims there's a few for me it's when people pull the shorts really really high bothers me bothers me how high is too i mean like bum cheeks coming out out the bottom yeah so it's not about it's not about them being high. It's about the bottoms being. Yeah. There's just no need. You're playing footy.
Starting point is 00:07:48 Pull them down. There's loads of football. Yeah, there is. When people tuck their shirt in. Oh, do you not like that? Not really. That always reminds me of the olden days, though. Yeah, they used to do that.
Starting point is 00:07:59 Olden days. Yeah, the olden days of football when players had longer shorts and tucked in shirts yeah it was a time maybe when people like pretend to be injured and they're not injured yeah i don't like that yeah when they're rolling around for ages and or if they like go down and then they scream just to get a foul yeah and then they just hop up and they're fine. Yeah. But you see that it's really been impact to the leg but you're holding your face.
Starting point is 00:08:28 Stop pretending. I can imagine it's frustrating when you're like I didn't touch you. Yeah. Yeah. And they just like
Starting point is 00:08:37 try and get a foul out of you. And then when they do that annoys me even more. Yeah. It's not what the game's about any off the pitch icks when people get into the dressing rooms
Starting point is 00:08:50 or when people don't shower oh yeah that's a good one but I have got one when like people go up to the fans and go like that oh yeah yeah yeah that's a bit icky that when people don't shower and when people don't
Starting point is 00:09:05 wear sliders in the shower that bothers me that's veruca central when people don't bring their own shampoo and conditioner and body wash and use all mine yeah good one yeah i know i know i know that's an issue and that a little should go a long way with your shower gel and yet here we are everyone taking big dollops and yet you literally have someone sitting over here who has an endless supply. I know. From the fans. True.
Starting point is 00:09:29 That got used in about a week. Yeah. I just left it in the changing room for everyone to use. Didn't really want to take it home. You just mentioned about like geeing up the fans, getting them going. How do you choose what your celebration is going to be? People are always like, oh, you should have a celebration that you always do. But when I'm in the moment, getting them going. How do you choose what your celebration's going to be? People are always like,
Starting point is 00:09:45 oh, you should have a celebration that you always do. But when I'm in the moment, I just do whatever. Like, I can't think. I'm just happy that I've scored. That I'm just like, oh. And I most of the time just go straight to my teammates. Yeah. I would like a celebration that people can remember me by.
Starting point is 00:10:02 I think that would be cool. But there's just none that would suit me right now, so I'm not rushing anything. I want to be perfect and relate to me. What about woohoo? I might do a Harland and run past the mic and go woohoo!
Starting point is 00:10:16 If it's good enough for Harland. We're going to do a bit of a quick fire round now, change up the pace a little bit. We've got a few questions. I want you to get yourself into a different headspace don't think too long about it just first thing that pops into your head are you ready ready jess asks mini eggs or cream eggs mini eggs great lily says red grapes or green red non-seeded yeah are you a green grape no no the crucial thing for me is the seeds. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:46 I don't like seeds. But I associate red grapes with seeds, but the red grapes are more delicious. Yeah. So I'm so with you. Red grapes without seeds. But I do think green grapes are crunchier than red grapes. So when I...
Starting point is 00:10:58 I like to buy the Panit that has, like, green and red. You know? Yeah, and I would always pick the red and leave the green. But I like the green if they're really crunchy i ate them then proper soggy grapes yeah horrible yeah someone called toonie and listen sorry someone called toonie and leslie on tiktok it wasn't you i think um us dogs or cats dogs wow yeah unanimous anda says, favourite colour when you get your nails done? Red.
Starting point is 00:11:27 Light pink. And you are exhibiting rocking your favourite shades today. That's the end of the quickfire round. You did really well. I like that one. You were pretty much in unison with everything. Ciara, or Chiara, says, if you could relive one moment in your life
Starting point is 00:11:42 and do it differently, what would you pick and what would you change now i know a lot of people are like no regrets this is my journey these this is how it's worked out and i wouldn't be here otherwise but where do you stand on it i stand on no regrets and everything happens for a reason the one thing i do regret in life is not wearing my retainer to bed right yeah because you. Because you see the difference, yeah. I went through the whole of high school with braces. Teeth were lovely at the end of it,
Starting point is 00:12:11 and then didn't wear my retainer, and they went straight back to how they were before. So then I had to get a whole nother set of braces. So that is my one regret in life. Apart from that, I've done everything for a reason, and it's got me to where I am today. So I would never probably change anything that's happened. There's probably a reason as well you didn't wear your retainer.
Starting point is 00:12:28 I could not find the good in that. Will you stop wearing it now? Is it too late? I'm wearing it every night now. Good. Simmers asks, if you had to go on either Dancing on Ice or Strictly, which would it be? What do you think you would be best at? I'd be terrible at both.
Starting point is 00:12:44 You'd be terrible on the ice, though. Yeah, I would have to stay strictly because I'd break my ankle or something. I would stay strictly as well because I can't ice skate and I can't dance, so that's really hard. So if it's just strictly, I can't dance. Yeah, it's one thing instead of two.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Dancing on ice is dancing on ice. Yeah. So yeah, I'd probably go strictly. Watch this space. Watch this space. Hey, Alex Scott did dancing on ice. Yeah. So yeah, I'd probably go strictly. Watch this space. Watch this space. Hey, Alex Scott did well on it. Is that the bar? That music gives me PTSD.
Starting point is 00:13:15 This one is anonymous. How do I get over an ex-boyfriend? Oh. So this is a bit of advice, I think. Oh, I feel like an agony aunt. Yeah. Keep yourself busy. Yeah yeah see your friends go go out do things that makes you happy yeah yeah hit the nail on the head there enjoy your own company learning to be um happy on your own and know that your company is enough it's great it's the best
Starting point is 00:13:43 and most powerful thing you can do. Because then when you come home to yourself, like you've got nothing to worry about. You know you've got that down. And also know that it ended for a reason. You're better off single than you were in a relationship that wasn't the right one. Like it's a step forwards.
Starting point is 00:14:00 Rosa's asked, what is your favorite type of potato? Oh, you know what? This is a great question. this is a great question. This is a great question. There's so many good potatoes now. I love roasties. Really hard. Like, you know, really crunchy roasties.
Starting point is 00:14:13 Really crunchy on the outside but very soft on the inside. Yeah. Hard boiled, ideally, and then shaken up. Hey, potatoes is the best carb ever. Ooh, what's your favourite carb? Potatoes. I love pasta. It's between pasta, potatoes, rice, bread. Bread.
Starting point is 00:14:29 Because bread includes pizza. Yeah. I'm still sticking with potatoes, you know, because look how many different varieties you can get with a potato. But if you take out bread, you can't have a sandwich. I know, I do love bread. I love a bread roll. That's such a tough question.
Starting point is 00:14:42 But anyway, going back to the actual question, I'm going to go chips. I love jacket potato. Yeah, you do. Topping? Beans or tuna. Oh. You're not happy with that? I hate tuna so much, don't I? Yeah, I love tuna. Right, chips, jacket potato. Okay. Yours? Sorted. Mash, I think there's like less room for error yeah although sometimes it's really too creamy for me oh I like it creamy
Starting point is 00:15:10 you do too oh yeah that's proper yeah I don't really like no lumps in it do you like lumps? that's the way you look to me like I'm so acute
Starting point is 00:15:19 no no lumps in it as if you're making this up I know and now I know if I do. Yeah. No lumps. Back when I used to do dating,
Starting point is 00:15:28 it used to be my favourite date in question on a first date was your favourite car because you could talk about it for hours because there's pros and cons of all of them. Yeah, you're right. What would you go with? I don't know. I still to this day don't know.
Starting point is 00:15:40 You have to pick one. Ah! You have to. I feel really under pressure from you both today. Is it bread? No. Is it potato? Or is it pasta?
Starting point is 00:15:56 It's definitely not rice. No, mine's rice. Rice is bottom of my list. Rice is bottom of mine too. Rice is good though. Yeah, but it's not like the others. No, it isn't. I could take or leave it.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Usually anything that I'm having with rice, I like the other thing. More. More that's on my plate. Yeah. Whether it's a curry or chili con carne or... Yeah. You know, whatever it is.
Starting point is 00:16:17 Rice is just a filler. It's, yeah, it goes with it. It's not the dish. Yeah. Pasta, however, you're not going to just have the sauce. True. Mine's definitely pasta. Yeah however you're not going to just have the sauce true mine's definitely pasta yeah you're a italiano very thorough answer um rosa i hope you're happy i don't know why i said that like i was accusing you as well i hope you're happy yeah thanks a lot thank you uh grace
Starting point is 00:16:38 has asked these have got so silly grace has, if you had to become a kitchen utensil, which one would you pick? I've actually spoke about this before with Martha Thomas. Well, she said that I would be a sieve. Why would you be a sieve? I can't remember what her thing was. Oh, I think it was a bit nasty, actually, that I would, like,
Starting point is 00:17:02 all the information that I get falls out of the sieve. I am the sieve. Or you're just like separating the good from the bad. Yeah. Do you know what? That's what I mean about less, yeah. Finds the positive in everything. That was beautiful.
Starting point is 00:17:17 Is like a kettle a utensil or not? Let's say yes. Because this question is not. I don't want to be a kettle, but I'm just curious of how. It's an air fryer. Because I'd be an air curious of how it's an air fryer because i'd be an air fryer you're an air fryer you're just saying what's the best everyone loves the air fryer yeah but then you use too much people take advantage of you and don't clean you sometimes i'd rather be something that people wouldn't use often
Starting point is 00:17:44 so you're just chilling just chilling there yeah what about like a potato peeler I'd rather be something that people wouldn't use often. So you're just chilling? I'm just chilling there, yeah. What about like a potato peeler? Or like a cheese grater? Yeah, I'd like to be a cheese grater. Why's that? I like cheese. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:58 Okay, good. Yeah, great question to think about. Yeah, thanks, Grace. I'd be a ladle. Sophie says, have you ever lost confidence in your ability? And if so, how did you get it back? Yeah, I think football is a lot of a confidence sport.
Starting point is 00:18:12 Like, the more confident you are, the better you play. But it's hard sometimes to keep that confidence when you're going through rough patches, which you always go through. Football is a bit like a roller coaster but I think it's just believing in your abilities um sometimes just doing the simple things right builds back that confidence and yeah having good people around you who believe in you as well um always helps if you ever feel yourself slipping what do you do what do you turn to do you have
Starting point is 00:18:42 like a tool in your toolkit that you know will help get your confidence back sometimes I like to watch clips of myself like scoring a goal or doing something good and I think I can do it Ella and then yeah not I'm back straight away but it does help build that confidence back up yeah remembering where you've come from yeah how you got there restoring that faith in yourself that's great advice for anyone who's um who's struggling with confidence maybe it's not watching a clip back of yourself playing football but it could be just remembering like looking back at a piece of work you did at school or something you did well and remembering I did that that was
Starting point is 00:19:19 me I actually got a question someone sent me in um my DMs on Instagram. And this is, I can't even imagine how difficult it must be because your body is your job. But after injury, how difficult is it to get into that mindset and to find yourself again? Tough. I was out for about 11 months in total a couple of years ago. And I probably didn't feel like myself again until maybe a year after right um just because yeah your body goes through so much when you play consistently
Starting point is 00:19:51 and um yeah you have to find your rhythm again your brain's wanting to do stuff that your feet aren't quick enough to do yet yeah it's tough but just trust the process yeah trust your body as well listen to your body yes um oh that was from ims who asked have you got any tips for coming back from an injury and five weeks post-op and losing motivation don't lose motivation yeah you'll be fine just be patient you'll get there yeah um yeah sending lots of love to you ims yeah immy and tilly and libby all together have asked what is your skincare routine we're going on a journey here water yeah water man that's it mine's not actually that much i'll always wash my face with my favorite face washes and then i've got a really nice face cream, and that's it.
Starting point is 00:20:47 Yeah, I'm probably just a moisturiser after a shower. Sometimes I like to put a nice little eye patch on before bed. But, yeah, for me, it's just wash my face with water. Done. Bosh. www.cargurus.ca search tools, deal ratings and price history. So you know a great deal when you see one. That's cargurus.ca. cargurus.ca. It's time for another quickfire round. Come on then.
Starting point is 00:21:34 Up for it. Bring it on. After the success of the last round. Let's go. You know the score. First thing that pops into your head. Emma says, opinion on blue cheese. Stinks. Okay. okay so rotundally negative
Starting point is 00:21:48 emilia says would you rather play a match in the afternoon or the evening afternoon uh yeah afternoon i do like an evening that an evening game uh afternoon an says, everything you eat for the rest of your lives tastes like either, A, the most sour lemon ever, or B, green olives. Which do you prefer? Green olives. Oh, that's not fair. I love green olives.
Starting point is 00:22:14 Green olives are lovely. Yeah. Oh, well, I just get a bad pick then now, don't I? Tangy lemon, probably, or whatever it was. That's the weirdest question ever, Anna. Everything has to taste like a sour lemon or green olives yeah i love olives same i hate olives is it true that if you eat seven at once well one after the other then you then you uh like them oh shall we have
Starting point is 00:22:41 seven i couldn't even eat seven later one olive you could we'll get you seven olive mine to it unless you've made me try them before and i didn't like them but i've not made you try seven slap torture that we're gonna feed you seven olives and watch make me extremely rewritten yeah you do like them ella peas or beans oh both yeah both depends what you're having it with that's so true i like mushy peas i like yeah mushy peas and peas are probably up there with my favorite veg yeah i would say that definitely peas yeah but i love beans yeah beans is a very broad school baked beans yeah i have beans every morning with breakfast. So beans. Edamame beans. Oh, Georgia Producer has written in bold,
Starting point is 00:23:27 they've got to pick one. Oh, sorry. Sorry, sorry. Oh, wow. I'm going beans now
Starting point is 00:23:35 because I eat them more. I'm going baked beans. No other. If it's baked beans, I'm going beans. But if it's not, then I'm going peas.
Starting point is 00:23:44 No, you've got to pick one less alright peas oh woah I wasn't expecting that twist what a turn
Starting point is 00:23:52 what's yours beans or peas you have to pick one I love peas it's hard actually I feel your pain now I love peas I love peas
Starting point is 00:24:02 yeah like mushy peas with fish and chips peas with a roast dinner. I'm going to go peas. Nice. At Wasso2000, that is the name it says here, has asked you, what is the most used app on your phones?
Starting point is 00:24:17 Oh, no. Probably WhatsApp. I'm going to have a WhatsApp. WhatsApp. Oh, WhatsApp, yeah. Two hours, ten minutes. Three hours hours four minutes but you know me i like a a voice note yeah mine goes whatsapp maps maps because i put my maps on
Starting point is 00:24:35 every single day even when i'm going to training even though i know where i'm going yeah i do that but mine's not far but maybe i'm quicker to get. Yeah. And then do you want to know what's after that? A new game that I've been really enjoying. Subway Surfers? No. You like that one, don't you? It's called Royal Match. Have you played it?
Starting point is 00:24:55 No. You'd love it. Well, mine's... Have you played it, Vic? No. It's kind of like Candy Crush, but not really. It's better. And then you build it.
Starting point is 00:25:03 It's really good. I might try it. I'll play it. It's better. And then you build it. It's really good. I might try it. I'll play it. Mine's WhatsApp, Instagram, and then Twitter. Podcast is getting up there, because I've been getting into my podcast recently. Sienna asks, who would win in an arm wrestle between you both?
Starting point is 00:25:17 Oh, we've never tried that. No, we haven't. We've tried Thumb War, haven't we? Yeah. Who won? I can't remember. Got quite long thumbs, me. Probably me.
Starting point is 00:25:28 No, I'm not sure on the arm. Yeah, I'm not sure either. Let's just say me. Yeah. And my biceps are massive. Got a question here from Emmy. He says, if you go back in time, what period would you like to go to and experience?
Starting point is 00:25:44 I think about this a lot oh 70s 80s great music good times flares before social media before that all took off yeah just dancing you had to knock on for your mates yeah and go round and ring the home phone that's the era yeah the music as well was unreal then yeah I got 80s Tiffis says if you could swap lives for a day
Starting point is 00:26:10 with anyone in the world who would you choose someone who lives in a really nice house I was gonna and someone who lives in a really nice country yeah
Starting point is 00:26:17 in the sun you can say just you know random person in Costa Rica someone on Tenerife a strip for you the strip someone on playa ingles um millie says if you could tell your 16 year old self something about
Starting point is 00:26:37 your future what advice would you give her make sure that you believe in yourself I think that's the main thing and just be confident and just embrace who you are that was lovely yeah that and enjoy yourself like have fun along the way lots of highs and lows but yeah it's just you just need to smile and have a laugh don't you yeah it's funny isn't it I feel like as you're growing up you get told that all the time just enjoy it just have fun and it's so much easier said than done. It's so wrapped up in worrying about the past, worrying about the future. And it's like, no, no, no. But we're just right here. Yeah. Right now. Just enjoy it, because as we've seen, it does all turn out OK.
Starting point is 00:27:21 You've survived everything you've been through until now. Good advice. Ali has asked, Toonie, we need to know what you do with your lashes. How can you run around for 90 minutes and they still look better than mine? Thanks, babes. No worries, babes. I've just got a good eyelash woman.
Starting point is 00:27:40 Shout out to my eyelash woman. Yeah, that's it. I don't really do anything. Like, yeah, get really sweaty, and they do fall out quicker than the normal person who doesn't run around every day sweating.
