Back to one-on-one with D.P.
Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 The Ticket.
To several Hustker coaches, Mark Maining, Lance Harvel,
Hermann DeMaggio, Peter Colbert,
Ronda Mabel.
Who love the ticket?
And we love that.
And here's my thing, and I want to be clear in saying this.
We've got three minutes.
And I want to say this.
Just to be clear.
I'm a coach at heart.
I'm still in my head.
I'm an athlete,
and I'm still a coach.
Again,
just offered two D1 programs to say,
hey, DP, come be a part of a coaching staff.
And I said, I couldn't do it just from time.
They said, well, at least promise us that you'll come talk to the team.
Okay, fine.
I get asked to talk to more teams around the country than I do Nebraska.
And that's fine.
That's fine.
And they pay me big bucks to do it.
And I speak around here for free
because I'm part of the community and I care.
Shout out to the folks for Fitting Futures.
Great event last week before I took off.
Bill Bush as the MC.
They had me as a guest speaker.
And what they do is fitting futures.
Listen, putting clothes on new clothes.
new clothes on kids that are fitted for them.
They do a fitting.
They get to pick.
They get to pick colors and combinations.
Tag still on them.
And these are quality brands.
It's not that they go and just get wholesale whatever, nothingness.
They're letting the kids feel good about themselves.
And that matters.
And they've got a full warehouse down there and they do it off donations.
I want to say that the event last week raised over $100,000.
And I think, I mean, that's 2,000 kids that are going to get clothes.
right?
Yeah.
To do that sort of thing.
I don't get paid to speak to that thing.
I think it's, no, that's not what we do it.
You're supposed to add to your community
and you're supposed to make Lincoln better.
You're supposed to make the University of Nebraska better.
You're supposed to make state of Nebraska better.
That's what it's for.
And when it gets into the stupid stuff
of contracts and agreements,
listen, that's not a fight they want to have with me.
I don't have to come here and do this.
The stories and the athletes in these athletic programs and these coaches.
And the coaches that I mentioned are amongst the best in the country at what they do.
Jaylon Reyes, they're the best of the country.
Here's the thing about this thing that I do.
Because I was an athlete, I understand what it takes.
Because I'm a coach, I understand what it takes.
And I have mad respect for anybody that's an athlete or coach.
Why?
Because you have to make sacrifices.
It's tough.
and to be great, to be great at it,
and all the names I gave you,
those are people who coach and live in greatness.
I'm going to shout their name and their goodness from the rooftop,
and I don't care about the money.
I don't care.
Listen, you can tell me, ask me what a Husker is,
and I'm immediately going to talk about Ridge Loving and Caleb Smith.
I'm going to talk about Kyle Perry.
I'm going to talk about Sam Hoyberg.
I'm going to talk about the boulders,
the long list of boulders that are gone,
Jillian Martin, Crystal Elliott.
The full group of folks, Amara Smith, Spate Smith,
we can go up and up and up and up and up and talk about how good it is
for them to come and make time and share themselves.
Mark Manning's busy.
He's got stuff to do.
You think he's got time to hang out of the ticket,
but if he wants to, the door's open.
Well, both doors open.
You don't need to owe me nothing.
And here's the thing about I'm also a journalist.
I'm media, fully credential, top of the game.
and the rule of it is
I don't make the news but I get the reported
and if you want me to say something good about you
then be good
do good stuff and I'll talk about you
if you don't like what I'm saying about you
get better at what we're talking about
because I've never told a lie on any of them
nobody in the state of Nebraska
nobody in Lincoln at the university
gets me to lie for you for that
but the beauty of it is
the people that I make
and the programs that we mentioned, we talk about Nebraska volleyball,
talk about basketball, talk about wrestling, talk about those baseball.
I don't have to lie for them.
They're that good.
They're that good of people.
They're that good a program.
They're that good in leading.
They live it.
So I get to tell the truth about that.
And for anybody that is proud of themselves and want their story told on the ticket,
I will tell it.
I will tell it.
and I'll throw hands for it because it's the right thing to do.
Husker fans deserve to know their athletes and their coaches.
And guess what?
There's one station in Lincoln, Nebraska.
One, that's 18 hours a day, seven days a week,
telling Husker stories, Wesleyan stories,
Lincoln High School sports stories,
Lincoln nonprofit stories,
all day, and it's all Lincoln, and it stays in Lincoln.
Our money doesn't leave the state.
Not some corporate schmo, it's right here at the ticket.
And anybody that don't like it, I challenge you.
The microphones open.
This seat right here is open next to me.
Come have that conversation.
Lincoln first.
No lie, no cat.
Love y'all.
Because.
Sports season's here. Woohoo! So many football and volleyball games to watch.
And tons of fall projects to complete.
Gotta get the deck done. Clean the gutters. Airate the lawn.
Somebody help me!
