Starting point is 00:00:00 One-on-one with D.P. Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket. One-on-one on a Saturday, 1133 in the city. We'll post game on the second stream for volleyball. We'll cover its Huskers in Georgia Tech, the rambling wreck of Georgia Tech. It's not just a yellow jacket. It's the rambling wreck of Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech. And if you want to go down a rabbit hole, go down and figure out where the
Starting point is 00:00:43 rambling wreck comes from. Yeah. Yeah, it's one of those things. Tristan, if I asked you, what is the mascot of Auburn University? Tigers. Then why do they yell War Eagle? I have no clue. See, right? Like it's the same thing as that Cal State Fullerton, where the Titans are mascot is an elephant. Don't know it. Don't understand it. Yeah, there's certain pockets of college lore that just is wonderfully entertaining. Yeah, we're on bug eaters. From the text line, Phil says this. I say, I think by your own admission, though, nothing else as far as an athletic program.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Nebraska is even close to the same level as volleyball. I think that's the difference. Those other teams are contenders in their respect to sports, but Nebraska is by far, at least roster-wise, the best team in volleyball. I think it's awesome. Wrestling is a contender for the championship, but let's be honest, Penn State and that sport is the equivalent of Husker volleyball team. There's just a different expectation when you have the talent that those two programs get.
Starting point is 00:01:45 Most people would say that if you went, if you look at Nebraska Wrestling's roster, it does not have the pop and zeal of Penn State, Oklahoma State, Iowa, who else am I missing here? now Virginia Tech. I mean, the Bassett boys go to Virginia Tech. James Green goes to Virginia Tech, so Tech is now in the conversation. There are programs. I mean, are they more tech, is there more talent here under Mark Manning and that staff? Absolutely. Right. And development of that and that people come here and commit to the idea and the concept that they will do everything that Mark Manning and this staff
Starting point is 00:02:30 says, suggest shows for the highest level of, success. But if you're talking about talent and money, Penn State spends exponentially more money on wrestling than Nebraska does. Not even close. Penn State Wrestling is a part of their revenue share. I, it's not the same. Not the same. Oklahoma State, go down to Stillwater. They will tell you, we went down there last year. Go down there and listen to them. Go into Vegas, Vegas International. the invitation and listen to the other programs, talk about their programs, and then the athletes and what they're getting
Starting point is 00:03:14 and what's expected. You're not, it's, people think it's apples, apples. It's not. It's not. But also, in the same token, Nebraska volleyball was spending a great deal more money because it had more resource obtained and set aside. So there is a thing,
Starting point is 00:03:35 but then you have to allow, the programs to make that money. Nebraska baseball and Nebraska softball. You have to create situations where they can make that money. Like I asked the question, well, man, it was really curious. It would have been interesting with the Jordi Ball softball team. Why would you not play at Memorial Stadium play a game like you did with the Savannah bananas? Right?
Starting point is 00:03:55 Because you've shown you can transform the stadium and to give people a chance. And that would be like you could set the record and beat the standard bearer for women's college softball for the amount of people in a stadium, all sorts of things. But that's just me, the idea, I just think it's okay to say that the, the, the offensive explosion in my mind, to my mind, and Texan, let me know, is that the greatest offense to ever exist in Nebraska? What's the best offense? Oh, gosh.
Starting point is 00:04:32 What's the best offense? And there are folks who put it at the most points, or the, the most yards. But position for position and win for win, what's the best offense in Nebraska history? Because I would, I think it's fair to say that Tommy Fraser and Kendall are, that Turner Gill are in that Mount Rushmore of Husker quarterbacks. Some would say Crouch and Frost or some, any other, right?
Starting point is 00:05:04 You're not, you're not wrong in. whoever your Mount Rushmore is, but whatever that is. But that clearly, clearly, Mike Rozier is as good as there ever was at running back. There are those in the roll call, but there aren't that, the list ain't that long. And then absolutely, that pipeline had dudes. That offensive line, dudes. and then the most elite wide receiver to ever flanker,
Starting point is 00:05:45 whatever you want to call them, to play it. I mean, you can go back to the 70s and have the same conversation about Taggy, Rogers, Kenny, that crew and that offensive line, again, elite. But what's the best offense? And again, that group of the triplets, may have been as good as anybody. They just didn't win a title or the title.
Starting point is 00:06:15 So do you devalue them? No. Do you say that's not one of the best offenses in, and figure about Nebraska history, college football history? Is there a better quarterback receiver running back tandem in college football history? I don't know. I mean, think about it. One A and one C, that that tag.
Starting point is 00:06:43 Aggie Rogers and Kenny are in the conversation. They're in the conversation, and most programs who have that level of success don't have the quarterback running back wire receiver tandem at the level of Gil, Rozier, Frack. And it's really hard to say. text line, I'm willing to go down that rabbit hole because Tristan, go ahead and Google greatest offense in Nebraska football history
Starting point is 00:07:19 and tell me what comes up because I think all of those are in play, right? It says 95. The 95 offense, give me the, so it's Tommy Fraser. Yeah, Tommy Frazier, Amon Green, Lawrence Phillips, And then you just look at the line. You had Aaron Graham on there.
Starting point is 00:07:44 Who's the wide receiver? Who's the lead wide receiver in that group? Lead wide receiver on that team was, you got Cluster Johnson. You had Reggie Ball, Vedrell, Gilman, a tight end. That's a solid group. Solid, but there's no Irving Friar in that group.
Starting point is 00:08:12 Love them all. Respect to the mall. Tip of the cat. Tip of the cap to them all. but is there a better group? And I don't know. Duane says the horseman group of the 80s. That's funny.
Starting point is 00:08:29 Yeah, I'm not sure. Yeah, I mean, just looking at that 71 group with taggy at quarterback, Rogers, and Kenny, it seems like they kind of taken away. I think taggy is so ridiculously underrated. And here's the thing. I'm old enough that I watched taggy play in some of the biggest games that ever were. I also think Rich Glover is underrated.
Starting point is 00:09:09 I think Glover's under, like I know in Dominic, and Grant Westram, Jason Peter, I understand. I understand. But in your era, how dominant you. you are and what you created and the chaos you created. That's a 20 tackle game in the game of the century. Tristan, I think you're bigger than Rich Glover. Might be.
Starting point is 00:09:41 I think you're bigger than Rich Glover. Pull up the stats on the height and weight of Rich Glover. And I guarantee you that he did not play at the full weight. He patted up. I want to say, I don't think he was six. one maybe six foot what's it say uh six one this is about two 30 six one two 30 tristan if i asked you to go to put on the pad today in the neck roll and go play nose tackle oh gosh no go absolutely no i'm not putting my body on the line no no he was the best
Starting point is 00:10:22 lineman in the country i mean bob devaney called him the best or the greatest defensive player saw. I'm a member of that club. I'm a member of that club. And that's in an era with the Selman brothers and Hugh Green. And I mean, there were some monsters in college football. Randy White from from Maryland. There were some dudes. And it just was unique to see Rich Glover in the middle of that defense, just hold it down. And the most, in the biggest game that ever was. And again, I've said this on air. we remember Johnny Rogers in that day, but we need to remember Jeff Kinney in that game. We need to remember Jerry Tagging that game,
Starting point is 00:11:06 and we better remember Rich Glover in that game because Rich Glover was a one-man wrecking crew, and it was pretty impressive. So I don't think the, Ted says the scoring explosion was the best offense, not necessarily the best team. I don't know that it wasn't the best team. It just, you just dropped a pass against Florida State.
Starting point is 00:11:26 And that Florida State, I mean, come on. They do. Come on. Come on. I mean, that fair to say that Florida State team is better than the Florida team, the Huskers face in the bowl game? Yeah. Like, all things have to line up for you to win a title. And they really have to line up for you for you to win three, three or four.
Starting point is 00:11:51 But truthfully, we could have said that team, this program could have won five or six. And it wouldn't have been a bit of reach. So we'll go to another break. One final segment, one-on-one before we hand it over. Watch live on Facebook, YouTube, or Twitch. You're listening to One-on-One with DP on 937, The Ticket, and The Ticket FM.com.
