You're listening to one-on-one with D.P.
Brought to you by Beatrice Bakery on 937 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com.
I'm going to send Rico's diving in the deep pool to figure out if Nebraska could host a regional, super regional.
I'm not sure they can.
The way it was described that, it's not, I don't think it's possible.
So even if they were to win and two number one or three number ones got knocked off.
So they, so the Stillwater Regional matches up with.
the Clemson Regional.
So Clemson is the 10-seat.
Oklahoma State is the 7-SEed.
So I'm just trying to see if Clemson doesn't make it out of their own regional,
if it's UNC Wilmington or Louisiana, Nebraska would host.
But if it's Auburn, I don't know because I have to find out what seed Auburn is.
Yeah, I just remember Sunday's conversation was that Nebraska could not host a Super Regional.
I don't know that that would be true.
Texan, let me know whether you guys.
And they would need some things to go right for them.
Well, I mean, Paramount, they have to win and Clemson has to lose.
I think Clemson and the A.C.
But I'm still not sure that they could host the Super Region.
I'm not sure.
I don't have that acumen on it.
I do want to jump into the Big Ten conference.
And some of the conversation that's going on in the offseason about financial deals and media rights.
And there were several outlets that had the conversation.
yesterday about what's happening in the Big Ten from a monetary standpoint for each of the programs,
the member organizations or schools in the Big Ten,
that currently has a deal that sits in about 50 million plus,
that a new deal that is being discussed for streaming, et cetera,
would almost double the amount of money that the Big Ten conference would provide to each of its member institutions.
double.
And there's several players involved in this thing.
This goes all the way from Apple TV to TNT.
Streaming of all sorts are all around the country.
So Kevin Warren said this.
I think from where we sit,
it's important for the Big Ten to stay on cutting edge
from media landscape standpoint.
We have so many passionate alumni who live all across our country,
who literally live all across the world.
And what makes this interesting now,
And that's why it's been important for us.
We have met every major player in the media landscape business.
He goes on to say that there will still be issues to be sorted out but hopes to get things finalized
and be in a position to make the appropriate announcement.
The Big Ten current deals with ESPN and Fox run through the academic year 22, 23.
Delaney Bet on the current boom and media rights on negotiating those deals,
which were signed for a shorter period of time, than usual, six years.
and have put the conference in a position to capitalize on the current medium market.
Now, there's talk of that number doubling from 54 million in annual distribution per school.
Of course, Iowa Athletics, Dr. Gary Barton said that's wishful thinking.
He says, there's talk of doubling.
I mean, I wish that were true, he said.
There's nowhere near that possibility.
There could be some potential upside, but nothing near the double.
So what do you know, Gary?
Left hand, right hand.
Big Ten reportedly had to help Fox consult on its behalf during this round of media rights negotiations.
But there are a number of different networks in play.
We have Fox, he said.
Obviously, a great relationship with ESPN, ABC CBS for Basketball.
That's our current group.
What I'm excited about is I watch and hear updates from our commissioner.
You've got NBC interested.
You've got maybe Amazon or some sort of streaming.
service, TNT.
So as good as it has been, it looks
like the interest is still there
to make it even better. So we'll see,
but I feel really good about it.
Now,
I know that there are people
who really don't like the Big Ten.
I know that people
don't really like commission.
Is it fair to say that everybody likes
money? Yeah.
Yeah.
The Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellor
is scheduled to meet on the league's headquarters on June 5th.
That group would have to prove any deal.
Warren says the media landscape has changed
and you think the interplay between linear television and streaming,
we just have to really think through what's best for the Big Ten
and what it stands for.
What's in the best interest of our fans?
What's in the best interest of our student athletes?
And what's in the best interest of our member instance?
So on all these complex deals that we're working on, you have to start honing in the time.
You have to be thoughtful.
You have to ask a lot of questions and determine what makes the most sense.
And, of course, you know, really take the time to get what you need.
54 million as the current.
Oh, boy.
That's a lot of money.
And you're talking about adding to that.
Streaming versus television.
and here's here's an interesting that we miss sometimes that the scheduling is for the money
most money for everybody involved those coaching interviews that people hate and dislike so much
part of the media contracts they agree in advance to participate they're all paid for it
You're going to do this.
You're going to do this because you said you were going to do this.
Yep.
Because there's enough money involved.
And once you learn that there is a number that makes everything move, then this falls in play.
Can't skip out on it.
Can't skip out on it.
You've got to be available.
Even if you don't like doing the pressers, you've got to do it.
Right?
Those are Big Ten and media-friendly situations and scenarios.
You have to do it.
You have to do it.
But if somebody said to me for $75 million,
and broadcast revenue.
That checks a lot of boxes.
That covers a lot of the annual expenses, right?
Like that covers everything.
Pretty nice.
Now, would you mind if the Husker game against Northwestern
was available only on Amazon?
Would that bother you?
I mean, it would bother me to the fact that then I would have to,
well, I think I have Amazon, whatever that is anyways.
Are there fans that aren't streaming now?
Probably.
People that are still stuck to...
To TV?
Yeah.
Well, yeah, there definitely is.
Does that mean that that...
That's why people are going to bars, is that?
I mean, that's why some people go to bars, but other people just go to bars so they can be around more people that don't have to host at their house.
Right.
Do you care if Husker games are on TNT versus...
No, I don't care what...
I don't care what television network it's on as long as it's on.
As long as it's on.
at the streaming service
I mean
it would suck if it was on
like Apple TV
because I would have to get Apple TV
but like that's the only thing
is if it's on a streaming service
that I don't have
then I have to get it
but other than that
like I don't
if I have it I don't care
if it's on Hulu
they start streaming on Netflix
whatever
like I'm trying to understand
for the fan base
because there's some of the fan base
that's just not technically savvy
they're not
they don't want to add another
the thing. They don't want to watch it on their laptop. They don't want to have to figure
out, call their son and daughter to have them come over and, you know, Bluetooth and get it
over on from the laptop to the TV. I mean, it is kind of annoying sometimes where you're
watching the game and you'll get an alert on your phone like three plays in advance because
the streaming is so far behind. Even if you, even if you hit live TV, like it's just so far
behind. And ESPN's like, Nebraska scored touchdown pass from someone.
and so to so and so extra point missed and you're sitting there and they're on like the 10.
But you control that though.
If you're multitasking and you've got this thing on your laptop and you're looking at stats.
No, if you're not like your phone just goes off.
Then take off the notice.
Bro, you're watching a game.
Keep it on for other games.
What other games are you getting updates, scoring updates on?
So if there's a good game, I'll put the, I'll put the notification.
So I get it.
Then you did that.
It's not my fault.
You did that in your response before.
It's very annoying.
And also,
and also,
stop doing it.
Also,
the canons are too loud because
stop doing it,
Rico.
Because we'll be watching the game
at our place
in Northwest Lincoln
and the canons will go off
and Rachel will be sitting by the window.
She goes,
I think I just heard the cannons.
And I'm like,
no, whatever,
you're imagining things.
Sure enough,
next play, they score.
But then stop.
Lower the canons.
No.
No.
What is wrong?
Tell Rachel to stop telling you the cannon went off.
She's just sitting by the witness.
She's because I think I just heard some cannons.
No, but why?
Why would she do that to you?
She knows it bothers me.
Okay.
Like most of the things that agitate people are things that you have control over.
No.
In your space.
Maybe I thought I got a text message.
I look at it.
It says Nebraska score.
No, stop getting.
If you're watching the game, why do you have notifications on your phone?
I just have them on.
Rico.
Turn them off.
What is wrong with people?
It's very annoying.
It's too slow.
It's annoying to you.
I need faster stream.
Go to Allo, bro.
I have Allo, and it's great.
It's great.
It's not Allo's fault.
It's the streaming service.
It's too slow.
It's your notification.
That's the fault.
ESPN's too quick with it.
Be slower.
No, said nobody.
Said no Husker football fan.
As I'm telling the streaming service to be faster.
Said no.
This is the problem.
Like people are thinking on an advanced level and then people are just going,
nope,
don't want to do it.
Nope.
It would take a small inconvenient for me to not have the Husker app rolling actively.
Do you?
I love the streaming.
So of 10 people,
how many people are listening to the call and watching the game on TV?
Listening to the call like on the radio?
So listening to the Sharp and then.
And watching?
and watching, but watching the game.
So say it's a road game.
Uh-huh. Right? It's on TV.
But are people listening to local broadcasts and watching the game?
Or are they?
Well, a decent amount of people do that because a lot of people don't like the TV announcers, no matter who it is.
And they'd rather listen to the local guys.
So they try to sync it up, but I'm not sure how well it sinks up.
How many people do you think that is?
Out of 10 people?
Out of 10 people?
Probably like four.
Who are just sitting holding on to Husker Network in spite of...
Maybe less.
Maybe two out of ten.
Which is still a really large amount of people.
So if you went to 10 houses in your neighborhood,
two of them have on the Huskers broadcast.
The radio broadcast.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I know my father-in-law sometimes listens to it on the radio because during football season, it's also like later in football season.
It's harvest season, so he's out and about in the tractor doing stuff.
So Markell makes an interesting point, and this is the thing I want to ask, right?
he says that I resorted to only being able to check Twitter during commercials.
For that very reason, the distraction of multitasking engagement makes you miss things.
But then there are people who have Twitter up instead of stats.
So what are you more interested in?
Twitter or the game stats?
So the games on TV, do you have Twitter on your...
I have Twitter on my phone.
Do you have it open?
just to see what people are saying?
Not all the time.
Usually commercials or if they're like if something happens and the announcers are saying
something or.
Do you keep track up.
Like if something happens that I can't see on like the TV, I'll look on there.
Do you get caught up in stats?
Uh,
do you have the, because I'll, because for basketball and baseball, like I'll have the, the,
the, the, the stats stream up.
Oh, I'll check.
I'll check the stats from time to time, but it's not like a constant thing for me.
Like, there are times like during a drive, like, during a drive where all,
just think, you know, how many yards did this person have currently up to this point in the game?
And I'll just check that.
Yeah, Corbett says that my dad used to do it for every game, watch it on mute while listening to it on the radio now that he's got to do that with volleyball.
Yeah, there's a ton of people who engage that way.
I'm always intrigued about how sports fans, like sometimes it'll go, like if you're a Tanner's getting ready for a post game, just watching people who have their phones out and they have their laptops out.
and I don't know if they're tracking whether for fantasy.
I don't know if they're doing it.
Like I don't know why they're doing it.
There's a ton of betters who have.
Robert Duck says,
why can't our radio announcers be our TV announcers for every game
instead of rotating terrible announcers?
Because they don't have rights.
No.
And also, I don't, they're not all terrible.
And also, even if you think they're terrible,
they're still really good at their job.
Well, Big Ten Network versus Fox versus Fox Sports.
one versus
like there's a full range of
good and bad.
And even then on those
broadcasts like networks
you have people have their favorites
people, those networks have their number
ones.
Texan, let me know who your favorite
people to hear calling
not Husker Network guys.
But who are your favorite
who are your favorite people?
Big Ten, Fox,
who are your favorite people to hear
call Nebraska games?
Like if it, so let's wrap your brain around this.
It's Nebraska Northwestern or Nebraska, Oklahoma,
next year.
Who do you want on the call?
Oh, I want Gus and Joel.
Well, I'm just going to, I'm just going to lay that out.
We'll throw it to break.
We'll close out one-on-one when we'll come back.
Give me those answers.
