It's a good day for it as well.
I want to thank you for the fine folks from Mary Ellen's Food for the Soul.
We're going to make that connection to get them.
tied into the Salt Dogs as well.
Charles just needs a date to go down.
He's going to change their world.
When he comes down there and delivers and feeds this team,
they're going to lose their mind.
I want to thank the folks from Canopy Street Market
who dropped off cards so each player could come through
and get a meal, get one of those perfect meals,
or they can go through shopping, get a beverage or two as well.
So we appreciate Dan Swanson and the folks from Canopy Street Market
for doing what they do.
Let's bring them in.
Let's bring in the head coach of the Salt Dogs.
Brett Jody joins us this morning.
morning coach what's happening what's cooling on guys how are y'all doing we're good we're good you know it's
always good because you bring a little of the southern drawl and you give it you you deliver it so
subtly that folks don't realize and you go wait a minute i bet when coach was a young man he used that
southern drawl in a bar or two every now and then just to get to try to lure the ladies
to get him to lean in and they just went oh coach we we hear you we hear you coach what's
happening with this team. Where do you guys stand and what's going on with it?
Man, we're fighting, man. We're fighting. It's crazy because we're, it seems like we're in every
ball game and have a chance to win and close to getting it done and just not not coming out
on the right side of things in a lot of different circumstances. And, you know, it's a little
stretch where we weren't scoring a lot of runs and we're pitching well. And then you start not
pitching well and you're scoring some runs. And then, you know, just vice versa. So just trying
to battle that right now and had an extremely tough one last night.
night, just a crazy game.
I think it took almost five hours, and now we're back here at the ballpark today
and have a noon kickoff today.
So I feel like Nebraska football right now, I guess.
It's a quick turnaround, which is a good thing after a tough loss sometimes to get back
out here and get back after it quick, but it's also going to be quite warm today, I hear,
so we'll see how they handle it.
How do you do that in prep?
Like, how do you deal with that and understanding trying to get guys not only to hydrate,
eat a good meal, do all those things in preparation,
so that when you get out there, you don't have cramping issues,
you don't have the nonsense.
You're exactly right.
Yeah, that's something, you know,
you could feel sorry for yourself after last night's loss
and not take care of yourself and then come out here today
and think you're going to be okay.
But the fact is, man, we've all been there.
When that heat jumps on you and, you know, it's tough to basically get hydrated then.
So you have to do it.
You have to prep the night before and really get after it.
and, you know, make sure you are extremely hydrated with, you know,
electrolytes water and all those things before you come out here.
Because if you don't prep beforehand and take care of yourself, you're not going to make it through.
So it's going to be a grass to be tough.
And it's an extra inning game yesterday.
Like I said, it took almost five hours.
So that's grueling on your body anyway.
And you're losing a lot of that necessary, you know, water and hydration from the night before.
So it's very tough to recoup.
And I don't, you know, we've expressed that to the,
guys and hopefully they're smart about it and and uh they're rolling in you know now as we speak and
getting ready for the game but it's uh it's a tough turnaround like I said but both teams have to do
it and we'll we'll make the best of it and just make sure we're watching out for these guys
hopefully we don't have any too long of innings out there on defense they get in some shade in the
dugout and then uh you know hopefully have a little quicker one today so dog skipper
bret jody joins us it is again as you said it's going to be extremely hot um and it's tough with
with young guys who feel invincible and you try to explain that,
but also nutrition is important.
Like what you,
you know,
you try to get them food in their system that's good for them.
What resources do you have in making sure that,
hey,
when they show up today,
you know,
there's fruit,
there's,
there's stuff,
healthy stuff in the building
so they can put something good in their bodies
because you can't always trust that they'll do it at night.
No,
you're exactly right.
Yeah.
And you're eating so late.
I mean,
people applauded probably ate after midnight,
night last night, which is not the best thing to do, but you know, you have to eat something after
refuel after such a long game. So, but I think this morning is the important part. I think it's
more small meals, you know, like you said, fruit and little, you know, granola bars or things like
that that can kind of get you through and just, and maybe even eat during the game, just little, little,
little, little, you know, bits of food here and there instead of eating a big meal this
morning, I don't think that's a great idea to, you know, or come out here and play on a full
stomach. So just, just little things and things that kind of provide some, some fuel and, you know,
kind of low and fat and, uh, and, and, uh, and, and, uh, just, you know, just, just, just good
quality foods for you. I mean, that's, that's, that's, that's what's smart. And Hunter does a
great job. Our clubhouse manager putting out fruits and, and, uh, you know, cliff bars and
different things like that, just to, uh, to get the guys through. And, like I said, just the
hydration is extremely important as well. So, um, so, uh, I never liked to eat big meals before
I played. I like to eat little things and stuff like that.
and maybe you are a little hungry going to the game,
but you know you have enough in your system to get through and survive.
And like I said,
it's more about hydration and doing that and staying on top of those things
and just being careful and not letting your body overheat.
Matt Honerman, our trainer, too, will have ice towels on the bench,
which you just need to come down there and cool down.
You're the catcher.
Catcher and pitcher are the most vital guys that you worry about
because of just they're doing something every play.
And the catcher's obviously wearing that gear too,
and the umpire back there.
So it'll be strenuous on those guys.
And hopefully the outfit aren't having to run into the gaps too often and stuff like that.
But, yeah, we've got to be smart with it.
Just keep an eye out and make sure we're being diligent and kind of being proactive.
So it doesn't become a problem.
The other thing is, you know, it's hard to get used to something like this
or get ready or get prepared because it hadn't been this hot, really.
I mean, you get a day or two at a time, but it's not like we're used to this type of weather.
and I remember other occasions in the past,
where it's just, you get some spells of heat,
and it just kind of comes out of nowhere,
and it's tough to prepare for that.
Like I said, it could be in the mid-80s
or even low 90s or whatever,
then all of a sudden, it's 105,
and it's something that you can't adapt to you right away.
So this definitely came out.
It was hot yesterday, too,
and like I said, these guys lost a lot of fluids yesterday.
So need to be smart and go out there
and push themselves when they need to,
and then be smart and back off and make sure they're hydrating
and getting cooled down when they need to.
Coach, does it change the way you manage on a day like today?
I mean, your preparation going, okay, my starter,
I can't necessarily expect him or assume that he's going to be able to go seven or eight,
you know, maybe it's four or five instead,
and then I got to figure out who I used last night in the heat,
short return, short turnover, not much reset.
Does it change the way you game prep when you know that you've got a 12-noon day
around 100 degrees?
Absolutely. You're right on point. You're exactly right with everything you just said.
And that's something like most of the guys that pitched yesterday are not going to be able to pitch today.
It's just too quick of a turnaround for them.
And I used a lot of guys yesterday.
So we're very thin in the bullpen today.
Our starter is also not built up yet.
It's only a second start with us.
So he's not built up to go a full allotment of pitches.
But even if he was, you're also correct.
I wouldn't try to get that much out of him.
I'd probably get him out of there, you know, an inning earlier or, you know, 15, 20 pitches earlier than I normally would.
And you watch that too and just see how they're handle it and see how they're bouncing back in between innings.
But, yeah, it's going to be a little quicker outing for him.
And then we've got a couple guys in the bullpen that we're going to have to go to.
And that's just what we're going to have for today.
So we're going to have to make the best of it.
And that's what affects your decisions yesterday, too, during the game.
You know, we were leading that game or tied in that game.
And so you're going after it and you're putting some of your better guys out there.
It just still didn't work out.
And that's when it really just, it really hurts you.
And it sets you back a little bit because you're using your guys that you're
think you're going to use to potentially win the game,
and then you still don't win the game,
and you end up using them a lot more than you want to,
and you've got a quick turnaround.
So it's a tough battle.
It really is,
and that's something that, you know,
like I said,
you're right on point and very smart
and educated with the game,
obviously,
and know those are the things you think about.
When somebody's yelled me out of the stands saying,
hey,
get this pitcher out of there.
I'd love to,
but we only got two guys in the bullfin today.
So it's going to be,
it's going to be tough.
But hopefully not.
Hopefully we just get some good outings here.
some good things out of our guys, and it's smooth sailing, but it very rarely works that way.
We sent you some folks down from BP last week. Any talent that you could use for a day?
Is there anybody? Maybe we send you Strick back down there to give you another left-handed bat.
We've got a bullpen catcher for you if you need. He's not very good with the stick.
He's not very fast, but he'll at least block pitches for you.
I got strict. Shirk was looking pretty good.
Now he almost left the yard twice.
And he was close, man.
But it was a lot of fun.
Had a good group out there.
We missed you, man.
We missed you coming out.
You might still be recovering from the last time.
I don't know.
But it was a great time with those guys.
And it's always fun.
We'll be back again.
We'll be back next month.
I'll be here for that one to get us all in.
And it is appreciated that.
Even in your routine, your pregame routine, you make time.
for our staff and our listeners to be a part of what you guys do.
It's a great memory for them to be able to get out on the field and shag fly balls.
And you had young kids that you just stay in there in awe.
And that's a reminder of your place in this thing,
that you guys have impact in this community.
And we appreciate the fact that you let us in the door to show.
I appreciate his word.
That's what's all about.
You know that, man.
It's all about that tight-knit community and everybody enjoying things.
And if we can just share a little piece of that with somebody and make their
day that's what's all about.
We're happy to be able to do that.
Well, later in the show, we're going to give away another one of those spots for batting
practice.
We'll do that later in the show.
But coach, I know you're getting ready for ballgame.
I'll be down to later.
I'll come down and pat you on the back a little bit and we can reconnect.
But I appreciate you going on a game day taking time to talk to us.
Go handle your business and get a win.
We'll do it, guys.
Appreciate it as always.
There it is.
Thank you very much.
That's Brett Jody.
Head skipper.
He's the skipper.
for the salt dogs.
And again, on a game day, 12 o'clock first pitch.
So we have vouchers.
So if you're sitting around and you're looking for something to do,
swing by the station, we'll get your vouchers.
You can go down and check out some day baseball.
It's a little hot, but I think it's before it gets at its hottest.
I don't know what's happening.
I don't want to send anybody down there.
I don't know if we're, yeah.
I'm going to go.
So I'm at least going to stop in and go catch a couple of things so we can do that.
Well, okay, so he said it's at noon, right?
Uh-huh.
92.
Okay, and then?
95.
And then?
98.
Win.
One, at two.
100 at 3.
100 at 4, 105.
And then we start going down, 99 and 6.
Okay.
So what you can do is go for lunch, catch the first five innings.
Hopefully, they're head.
Hopefully, the first five innings don't take an hour.
Right, right.
And you can chill before it gets too much.
Although, there is shade.
There is.
There is shade.
Like, you have more shade than the players have.
Right.
Yeah.
How about that?
You not have to make pictures or run around.
So, after so, so sunsets at 8.41.
At 9 o'clock, it'll be 92.
Listen, having coached in Texas.
The coolest it'll get tonight is, all right.
So, okay, so at 8 a.m., it'll be 79 because it's supposed to storm.
Okay.
But at 6 a.m., it'll be 82.
and that's as cold as it gets during the night.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Which even then, the sun rises 25 minutes after six.
Well, somebody asked me, he said, well, even in Nebraska, they're like, it's 100 degrees and you're wearing a pullover.
I'm like, yeah, but this is dry fit.
It breeds.
I said, plus, for the last 24 years, I've coached in hot weather.
So in my mind, I have to figure out how to get through it anyway.
I don't really trip.
You're crazy person.
Well, we know that.
That's been made it very important.
That is true.
You know, so there's that.
We're going to go to an early break because we have a guest in studio.
There's so much to talk to them about, shared story, lots of information.
We'll bring a Dr. Adam Gensler when we come back to one-on-one.
