Starting point is 00:00:00 It's time to go one-on-one with D.P. Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket. It is a Thursday, which requires a boo. No Lionheart today. Fowl on Derek Pierce. I dropped the ball on that one. My bad. My bad.
Starting point is 00:00:36 It happens. My humanity shows up. Sartrehamer, check sign 4024-6-4-6-85. He'll be back to. To pay attention to it, the royals are on the terrestrial. So are you guys on the stream?
Starting point is 00:00:57 That's if they're playing and weather permitting. But I think they are. So those that are seeking out some local coverage and conversation, certainly come on through and hang out with us. Um, the lead question of the day and, and there's several headlines in the, in the part of the day and the things that we will talk about over the course the next two hours. But first question of the day, as always is, Bach, Kyncerr, how the heck are you?
Starting point is 00:01:25 Hey, not too bad. Feeling pretty good today. Uh, obviously getting closer to the weekend. And my favorite, uh, headline today is that Caleb Williams attempt to trademark Iceman has been initially refused, uh, of course, because that's not his dick name. Yeah, like, you know. here's the thing i okay i'm i'm i'm old i fully understand i'm old and so some of these things generally generationally having reached all the people that that it should and not everybody
Starting point is 00:02:00 that proclaims to be an expert in anything or that would claim ownership of something doesn't know the history right and we aspire on a daily basis to have conversations that remind people that sports is cyclical, life is cyclical, our humanity is cyclical, our citizenship. Like we understand that history repeats itself. And often there are people who speak of history without knowing the history. But if you are from Chicago and you feel like you are Iceman, get better friends. Get better friends.
Starting point is 00:02:46 Get you some leadership in your life, right? Get you some people who can tell you... Hey, bro. You probably... You probably shouldn't do it. You probably shouldn't. Do you know? Okay, so I'm going to go through the history.
Starting point is 00:03:08 And I think the simple part is to talk about so there's an athlete that most renowned for playing in San Antonio right please don't miss the fact that he played in Virginia that George Gervyn was originally in the ABA
Starting point is 00:03:38 next to Julius Irving for the Virginia Squires reminder, right? Hey, folks. Like, we'll take you back. We'll take you back in time. Several seasons moved from shooting guard to small forward, back to shooting guard after Julius was traded to the nets. So versatility, a six foot, let's call him six foot seven. Right? Some said six, eight, whatever it was. still one of the top I'll say top 10 scores in NBA history
Starting point is 00:04:23 and by that I don't just mean points I mean the ability to score a bucket authentically that George Gervin was the machine I put George Gervin in the conversation with Bernard King and elite scores Alex English, elite score.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Maybe not the best player all around. But when it comes to getting a bucket, getting a bucket, like I think Anthony Edwards falls in that category more than he does MVP candidate. I think he gets a bucket. Brunson, Jaylon Brunson, now firmly in that conversation of guys who get a bucket.
Starting point is 00:05:07 Earl Monroe, Earl Monroe, point guard by theory, and presence, but one of the greatest bucket getters of all time. And he takes his career into San Antonio. He finished in the top 10 MVP balloting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 times. 9 times. Rookie the year in the NBA, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,000,
Starting point is 00:05:43 four, five, 14 time All-Star. Now, Bach, do you know where he finished his last, where he finished his career the last year? I do not. He averaged 16 points a game for the Chicago Bulls.
Starting point is 00:06:01 There you go. And nobody told the young quarterback for the Chicago Bears that you weren't even the first ice man in Chicago. Nobody told them. Nobody, Nobody just pulled them to the side and whispered, hey, bro. Chill.
Starting point is 00:06:21 Chill. Not cool. Not cool. Not cool. Like if somebody, let's say Jalen Brunson decided all of a sudden now that, you know what? I've earned my stripes. I'm now going to call myself Dr. J. The J is for J.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Dr. J. Bach, what would, what if, as a friend, of his, what would you say to him? You can't look up your history, just like you said. I mean, it's a different sport. So maybe there's a word, but you say, but it goes across sports.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Now, the only other thing argument would be Chuck Liddell, who's also had to make name. He's not the ice man. Listen. That's what I would say, too. Right. Listen, and I've said this in UFC, sir. Now, mind you, I don't know that that all UFC fans are George Gervyn basketball fans. I don't know that they are in the same pocket.
Starting point is 00:07:30 He may have been the first Iceman to them. And quite frankly, some people have said to him, hey, bro, you're still the other iceman. Like, you're the other iceman. Would you say it to him? That's the only thing. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:46 He might not like that. Oh, that's okay. And he could fight. That's okay. He wouldn't be the first person who could fight that I, I said something to you. I, hey, hey, Bach, little as it's known,
Starting point is 00:07:59 DP can fight too. Well, you might be able to fight, but can you fight Chuck Liddell? I will fight whoever I need to fight. You might not win. Right. Listen, I, Anthony Smith to fight. Do I want to fight Anthony Smith?
Starting point is 00:08:15 No. If I had to fight Anthony Smith, hey man, that's just an L. I'm going to have a cake, but guess what? That's just a thing. Like, I've, I spent too much time fighting for everything, right? And you say to, to fighters,
Starting point is 00:08:37 and again, I tell you that most mixed martial artists, they're barely human. So we understand what we're walking into. Like, it's like going to the dentist. You know it's going to hurt and it's going to leave Mark, but it's just some things you just have to do. You just have, like, sir, listen, we, we're going to do that.
Starting point is 00:08:53 Like, you wouldn't let Chuck Dadell disrespect your wife. Yeah. Right. Right. You would, okay, listen, this is just one that I got to take. But again, I, I, I was a WWE fan. I know I need an equalizer, so I'm not fighting fair. I think most people, I think most people in that space, you have a line that is drawn.
Starting point is 00:09:16 I am pretty ethical when it comes to that sort of thing, and I'm pretty well balanced. because, I mean, again, I ran nightclubs and bars, and, you know, I had a team of bouncers, but I also, there were things that I had to do for myself in order to have that. Like, who, it's kind of the, who, who's going to bounce the bouncer? So I always figured in that, you know, okay, this is what it is. So Caleb Williams wanted to be called the Iceman.
Starting point is 00:09:44 Somebody should have told them no. They just should tell them no. And so finally, the patent of trade monarch was, like, nah. Nah, not going to let that happen. It was apparently a, it wasn't Gervyn or Chuck Liddell that got in the way. It was apparently a 1988 trademark filed by lacrosse footwear for insulated boots that got in the way. Well, again, we know more business now than we did then.
Starting point is 00:10:12 And not all basketball players were into the trademark business. They, you weren't doing business that way. But one of the great posters ever is George. Gerva's ice back. Look, that was in, that was in bedrock. I guarantee you that's been in more American homes than those boots at their time. Yeah. Right? Like, I don't think, I don't think it's close. I don't, I don't think it's close at all. I mean, there's certain, I mean, are there, there's certain iconic nicknames that they're repeated, right? They're repeated, like, because it's a cool name. Um, magic has been taken. And I, and I would think that, um, um,
Starting point is 00:10:53 magic would be trademark, but can you? Like, I don't even know if he can trademark it in the lead. Because I don't know, there's a whole team named the magic. And mind you, Magic Johnson was first. He was first, right? Like, you go, wait a minute. He was there before the Orlando Magic. So quite frankly, the Lakers could have, and what do you do?
Starting point is 00:11:20 Do you trademark showtime? do you I don't know if hook shot is trademark I don't know that Ali Upp is trademark so there's certain things in sports I'm trying to think what would be the most iconic nicknames that have been shared by athletes
Starting point is 00:11:46 right I mean what comes to mind what am I yeah I'm trying to think there's a lot of the nicknames I mean, like you said before, everybody was just kind of trademarking. Either way, you want to come up with something that's yourself, but I guess in different sports. Well, big unit is there.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Fridge, they've kind of identified and locked it down. The bus, kind of iconic sweetness. I don't know that there's another sweetness. The great one, unless you talk to the Rock, it's the Gretzky. Like the great one is, you know, one on one with a great one. Who are you talking about? You're talking about Gretzky. Rock will tell you otherwise.
Starting point is 00:12:32 Megatron, unique, right? I don't know that there's big poppy, right? Air Jordan, Air is not trademark. Air Jordan should be. The logo. The logo. Jerry West is the logo. Now, I don't know that when he was playing, he wasn't called the logo.
Starting point is 00:12:59 When he was playing, when he was actually live in the game, prime time. It's Theo, right? Yeah. So some of those. But like an LT, like Lidian, LaDalenian, Thomas Taylor. Yeah, but it's Lawrence Taylor.
Starting point is 00:13:18 When Jerry West played, he was Mr. Clutch. On the East Coast, he was Zeke from Cabin Creek. Yeah. Cabin Creek, West Virginia. He was Mr. Outside. So it was a lot. lot of things that, you know, you kind of call to yourself, but I don't know what other ones
Starting point is 00:13:41 would you, would you lock down and go, okay, quite frankly, just not. Starting point is 00:15:03 Like, you know who they are, black mama you know who they are right nobody should ever come behind that and go black mama right just yeah yeah save yourself how about a rod and erotic Alex Rodriguez it's it's roderyghus right it's your own preference thing right where where you stand in it yeah uh juice yeah that that's ornthal the answer is AI yeah captain contrary to not you believe it's Derek Jeter. White chocolate. There's been several white chocolates. The playmakers, Michael Irvin, Greek freak, Janus. Honey Badger was a good one. Yeah. It was a good one. Paul Pierce was the truth. The dream. I think an underrated nickname, Slim Reaper. Not bad. Yeah, that's not bad. Half
Starting point is 00:16:04 Half man, half amazing. A friend of ours, the big ticket. Pistol. Pistol Pete. Well, I saw that too, because I was reading into that, apparently Pete Marevich is, well, obviously, Pete Marevich, Pete Sampras also had a pistol nickname. No. But again, it could be a takeover pistol piece. He wasn't half as interesting as P.
Starting point is 00:16:32 I mean, that was part of the deal was that Sampras was. Samperson Roddick had the just the the misfortune of coming along after McEnroe and right as Andre Agassi and his hair and fluorescent tie-dye denim. Like you came in at the wrong time. But Pete Sanfries is married to Veronica Vaughn. Well, but Andre, listen, Andre did okay. I don't know. I don't know. Living in a life with Steffie Graf wouldn't have been the most terrible of lives.
Starting point is 00:17:11 You know, yeah, the path that he went down. The franchise, Splash Brothers, Bash Brothers, Dames Time, Beast mode, right? You can't copy. Yeah, I just think in an Iron Mike. Now, here's what's funny, right? Because if this makes me a hypocrite to my own belief. because there was an Iron Mike before Iron Mike Tyson. But he was a jobber in the WW Iron Mike Sharp back in the 70s.
Starting point is 00:17:47 60s and 70s, Iron Mike Sharp. Well, let me ask you this one. Yeah. Diesel. Who's that? Diesel Shack. Not John Riggins. He's Shack.
Starting point is 00:17:57 Yeah. And I love, like in D.C., it's John Riggins. Yeah. That's why I wanted, I knew. I thought you might be biased there. But, but Shaq had others. Yeah. Like Shaq had other nickname.
Starting point is 00:18:11 Diesel was, again, Riggins was first and iconic. In DC, in the NFL, Diesel is in, is, is, is, is, is, is, I don't know that even in the NFL is that anybody's calling K. William Diceman. I don't think so. Right. Like, I don't know that. He's trying to make that happen.
Starting point is 00:18:31 Is he really? Yeah. I mean, he's, because he's got a logo. He's got a logo. with it too that it might have a better chance have you heard any player call him ice man is that ever happened
Starting point is 00:18:43 no this is his own thing right like oh there goes the Williams boy there there on the cover of Madden it's a good time to try it I guess
Starting point is 00:18:58 there goes the Williams boy over there name him giving himself nicknames like you have those friends that give themselves nickname yeah that's not something Yeah, you can't give yourself a nickname. That's so good.
Starting point is 00:19:18 If Harrison comes in and he goes, yeah, I'm the big age from now. Yeah, that would, that would be, listen, we need, well, that should be the thing is that we should like give all the host. Find everybody nicknames. Everybody, everybody, let's create a whole new, like, what would we call Austin? Oh, that's good, yeah. Like he would be the Tim Duncan of the ticket. He would be the big fundamental. Right?
Starting point is 00:19:49 Right? Like, right? We could call Austin the big fundamental. Yeah. Right? We could call him, we can call him Big Smooth. Look at it. Look at it.
Starting point is 00:20:01 Yes, Austin's in the back of Chris. Full of you agree. He is, he is the big fundamental. I think that would be appropriate. Um, Bach, I don't know. I think we would have to come up with something
Starting point is 00:20:13 W. W. W. Based. But heel from the heel side. It has to be something from the heel side. Yeah. Well,
Starting point is 00:20:24 I did. I mean, sometimes care. We did have a little bad news buck. Right. There's bad news. Yeah. Bad news.
Starting point is 00:20:31 You're going to stick to my gimmick though there. Yeah. Right. Turn around and look at Harrison and tell me what we would call Harrison. What would, what would Harrison's, his nickname me. He told me the other day, his friends called him Stitch.
Starting point is 00:20:44 Stitch? I think it's Stitch. Stitch or still? Stritch? It's like ostrich. Something like that. Ostrich. Yeah, but stretch.
Starting point is 00:20:55 Take out the Oster. No, I would, I would leave. I would, it would be ostrich. Just go with Austin. Like, it would just be ostrich 100%. Like that would 100%. Willie goes, Austin is Mr. Data. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:09 It would be pretty good. Eric says for Shaq, the big Aristotle. Yeah. He's got, you know, plus he's shack put. Like he should.
Starting point is 00:21:17 He probably got more nicknames than anybody, right? I think on purpose. Like, what would he call your tag team partner? So it's bad news and, I mean, he is the black shirt. Yeah, he is.
Starting point is 00:21:30 Like, he is the black shirt. But what, is there something else we would? Well, Keith Jackson in the intro called him a holy terror. Yeah. I think that's pretty good. He's the Holy Terror.
Starting point is 00:21:39 He's the Holy Terror. The Big Hurd is, yeah. That is a good pull. The glove, Gary Payton. There's several people that put that one in. Yeah. I just think the nickname aspect of it. I mean, I think I told somebody this the other day
Starting point is 00:22:00 for the first time on air here in Lincoln. but until I got to college, my nickname was Hollywood. Hmm. I was Hollywood. Hollywood Pearson. I was Hollywood. One, because we, again, our uniforms look like the cowboys. And I wore the white cleats, even when no one else wore the white cleats, right?
Starting point is 00:22:28 1978, 79, the trend, right? The cowboys were kind of classying up the way people dress in the league. and Thomas Henderson wore the towel, the towel, right, that flap in front of you. I wore 26 last name Pearson, so Cowboys, Preston Pearson. And my best friend at the time was a guy by them, Bill Knight. So he was number 25, that was number 26. And we were both the kick and punt return returners. So back there in the back, it would be Broadway and Hollywood.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Broadway Bill Broadway Bill and Hollywood Yeah And then I became I was Big D in college So all of my friends
Starting point is 00:23:17 Becky likes to laugh That She can tell The women that I dated Because like on social media They look like I post something Hey Big D So she knows it was
Starting point is 00:23:32 You know what air It kind of dates it, like it puts them in a pocket. She goes, okay. All right. I fully understand. And then DP happened in Utah. Utah. Where did that come from?
Starting point is 00:23:47 I mean, obviously your nickname, but why? It was the nickname because, well, the funny thing was that, okay, so this is pre-streaming, right? So it's radio. Right. And when I first, it was kind of like when I got to you, got to Lincoln. The people there didn't know me. And I would say my full name, and people would mess it up. And I was Darrell and Darren and, like, they couldn't get Derek.
Starting point is 00:24:19 They just couldn't get it, right? They couldn't get it right. And then Ron Boone, the legendary, the legend Ron Boone, of course, dad of Husker Ron Boone, Omaha, Nebraska's, own Ron Boone, the Iron Man, since we're talking about, well, he was the Iron Man in the NBA before A.C. Green, that street, that game streak was Ron Boone.
Starting point is 00:24:45 And he literally said, well, let's keep it simple. Because somebody called in and they kept talking about Darren. And Ryan was like, who are you talking about? And he goes, your host. And he goes, oh, Derek. Derek. It's Derek Pearson, DP. that it's that complicated.
Starting point is 00:25:04 And then people just went DP. Yeah. And that was... That's interesting. Yeah. It just, you know, they couldn't spell it. They couldn't spell it. And they wouldn't say it right.
Starting point is 00:25:14 So, I mean, to tell you the number of Darren's, uh, Ericks, I was everything but Derek. And they never, they spelled a D-R-E-K. Yeah. Which was another thing that's chapped my, my skin. That probably happens once a month. That it's, no, it's Derek, D-E-R-R-I-C-K. And then a funny thing happened, they interviewed two of my sisters. They brought them on the show.
Starting point is 00:25:47 It was for my birthday. They brought my sisters on. And they kept saying my name the way my sisters say my name. So in my house, growing up, If you talk to my sisters to this day, I'm Derry. I'm Derry. Dirk. And then my, like the girlfriends that I had in high school, like junior in high school,
Starting point is 00:26:19 shortened it to Dirk, like Dvitzky. I was Dirk. Well, because they call my house. Before there's a Dirk. They call my house and there's like, is, is, is Derek there? And he goes, and then they'd yell, Dirk, come to the phone. And, you know, if you have never heard anything other than Derek, and then you hear, Derek, and they would ask, like, what did she just call you?
Starting point is 00:26:45 And I was like, yeah, that's how my sister pronounced my name. And then they would go, well, I'm just calling me dirt. So when I called there, and that was kind of a code that it was somebody that was interested in me that if you called me Dirk, my sister's new, okay, like, this is somebody cool. So yeah, Dirk Pierce, Dirk, and then D.P., because it became much easier. I don't know that, I don't know that Becky calls me Derek. Like, by name?
Starting point is 00:27:22 She called you D.P.? I'm, like, she, when we first started dating 30 years ago, it was Big D. Like, because I saw, like, our dates were basically her coming to watch me play ball. And yeah. And so that's what people screamed and that's what people called out. I don't know. I need to ask her.
Starting point is 00:27:45 You don't know where she calls here. I don't. What? When she's mad. Yeah. Different things. A whole different thing. There's a whole list.
Starting point is 00:28:04 There's a whole list. none of our radio appropriate. So we'll go to our first break. We'll go to our first break. We'll come back.
