since it is that time of year. Jake Bachman, man. How's it going the day after Labor Day? Hey, it's going pretty well. Nebraska 1 and 0. So all across the country, everybody can celebrate their team. That's not lost yet. There's a few exceptions where people aren't too happy.

But, you know, it's just so awesome to be back into football season, go through a college football weekend. One of my favorites is Labor Day weekend. Of course, you get football Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Now, if you like the NFL, you know, we don't have to wait too much longer, right? We take a break here Tuesday after the Monday Labor Day game. and already get NFL going here Wednesday. So it is,

it is, it is that time of the year. Football is in the air and our team's undefeated. So who could ask for more than that? Yeah, I mean, like, right,

just take the dang win. You know, I always say that much, whether you want to like say, hey, we're going to go win a national championship. I tell you to pump the brakes, but like,

I'm not going to tell you how to feel. But at the same time, yeah, there's things to complain about in that first football game, but, you know, look around. It could be Oregon,

who was in a nail bite or two. You know, you can our good Boise team. could be Rutgers, losing to the minute men after they lost 16 straight, did not win a single game last year and lost their four last games two years ago, which built up to a 16 game losing streak. And we didn't have to have any like sad fireworks at Memorial Stadium. I know that was a bit problematic for Rutgers there.

But you know, want to know, you'll take that. I also want to get into the volleyball side of things as well, but you did mention it. NFL on Wednesday, how you feel about those midweek NFL games? Because that used to be like the one day the NFL wouldn't touch. And then there was the Christmas game on a Wednesday. And then it felt like ever since they did that, it's like, all right, well, we know we can dominate any day of the week.

Why don't we just put some of these in here on a Wednesday? But it's interesting because I guess I was thinking all along, okay, they're doing that for the Australia game. But that's not the case. Australia games going Thursday. So it's not necessarily, it's just odd. I mean, it seems like the NFL needs to be on every day. And you know what?

For most of us, we're not going to complain about it. It gives you kind of something to talk about. again, you know, college football is, is my personal favorite, but the NFL is obviously the bigger league and, you know, the storylines and everybody kind of knows the quarterbacks and through fantasy football and all that sort of stuff. People are all excited for it. So, you know, it's, it's a little bit of adjustment, but this week is just kind of whack, right? I mean, that's what this is. We're all kind of feeling is this is this Monday? And then there's going to be NFL football tomorrow and be like, I just don't know what's going on here. So it is, it's just one of those weeks you have to adjust to. I would say that I don't. love it on but it's not like anybody else was taking that day right i mean if you're a baseball fan it's like one of the few days you got left without any football on so maybe there's that but that's okay yeah my whole point is like i like a movie every now and then when it's my job to watch

sports every single now don't get me wrong out of all the jobs in the world this is by far one of the easier ones but i don't mind a little bit of break i'm also old school and it's like the friday saturday sunday reset and of course monday football um then it was Thursday night football and i was like all right it gets if it's open we'll just take a Wednesday too while we're at it. So am I going to watch the game? Of course, I will. But it is a little bit strange that some of these weeks when you look at like the full slate of things, not to mention volleyball this week, you got Friday, Saturday or excuse me, I believe it's Thursday, Friday, Saturday this week as well as they get ready to take on New Mexico,

Baylor. And then the third one is Georgia Tech. So you have all that going on as well. You have college football. You got volleyball and college football on the same day. A lot to take in. So if you're sports fan, the great news is you're going to have some options. If you're trying to consume all of it. You have to pick and choose or at least do the multi-casts there. With that being said, we do got Kupsker on the text line. He says, I'll still tune into whatever Maction is on over the NFL. So we do got some action fans out there. Bacch, are you a guy that's going to drop everything to watch some action?

Maybe now that they're competing with the Big Ten. There's a lot of pretty good Mac schools out there. You know, I like to. And I've said this before. I mean, if you're a college football fan, that's like, you know, it's awesome, right? to get that extra day in there. And I go back to when Aaron Judge was going to break the Yankees. Oh, don't get me started. Home runs.

Yeah. And they would break into all these college football games. And I'm just going, in the modern age, if we want to, we can go and watch baseball and find that moment. But of course, they try to make that that more historic. The bigger thing is I'm a Red Sox fan, so I don't care about any Yankees stats or anything like that. But I remember saying back then, you know, I'd pretty much rather watch third and four in the middle of the second quarter between Miami of Ohio and, you know, bowling green or throwing anybody out there. And, uh, you know, but, uh, that's, that wasn't so received well by everybody.

But, you know, for me, it's, it's football. It's college football. And if you, if you, if you crave for it, if you love it. And that's what I love was the kind of the stories about it when it wasn't so national championship based. Yeah. And I was kind of intrigued over the weekend, too. Like there's certain teams that win. And I wonder what like at what level that takes that next step, because I was hearing at the end of like the North Carolina game their first week. You know, and then I think it was, uh, might have been the Minnesota game this week where it's like,

you know, this would be a really good year to make a bowl game to win it. And, but most, most games, most like teams you listen to. It's like, all right,

the playoffs. You got to make the playoffs. Everything's a playoff base because you win at championships and, and, and, and what's a chance to win and play for a championship. And again, I'm not here to say one system is right or wrong.

But I do just kind of, along for the days when there was more than just, is this affecting the championship picture? Because there was like more context. Like, hey, you can make a big, a big bowl game or set like your own single season records, you know, do something that the school is never done. And now it's all kind of just,

hey, are you going to win the national championship? And there's only a handful of schools, really, where that should apply. And kind of be the main focus. But, you know, it is what it is. But I really do wonder at what point, you know, how long into the season do you have to win before you're given that the, the kind of beyond the preseason expectation of, hey, this is a good start to just make it

a bowl game as opposed to this should be, you know, a playoff game because I'll always, um, be astounded or kind of thinking through the lens of, remember Nebraska USC was kind of talked about as a playoff eliminator game. Yeah. And I don't think either team was ranked. You know what I mean? It was like late in the scene. It's just like, I don't know if that should be the focus of this game. I don't think these are playoff teams. I think there's, but there can, for my old school college football bind, there's more that can be out there than just making the playoffs or not. Yeah, I'm wondering if sometimes, too, it's just like the context around college football, like, as cost have gone up, like, even if you're not one of those

premier schools, like, you know, you're looking at your head coach, you're looking at your staff, and you're like, okay, it's $25 million roster. Coach is making, you know, a good $40, emailing whatever through the course of years and it's like is it fair and like not every fan always equates what everybody else is making but it's like you just see outrageous numbers and it's like okay there's no way we're paying all this money and our expectation is seven wins you know and like i think unfortunately because it's become uh in my mind unfortunately a little bit of like amateur professional football that like you're like hey we're paying guys we're paying coaches we got you know freaking 80 extra staff on the team there think we should swing high right like

And, you know, I think that frustration, not just here, but like you go any fan base, you feel that pressure a lot. And there is one game, I want to use an example. But before we get there, we'll get to a couple more. We got Kupsker talking about some action. So let's go golden flashes. So he'll be tuning in on Wednesday for that, I imagine, as opposed to the NFL. We got unknown textures 1627. I just hate that all the Thursday NFL games are on Amazon.

Those are good. And those games are good matchups. Yeah, I mean, that's just my parents would agree. like even myself like I'm young I should be able to do it but like the constant streaming is a little bit annoying and trying to figure out you know who's getting the the rights this year and you always got you know bounce around you know HBO max or if they got TNT of course and then you got your peacock that basketball Nebraska basketball never really ends on a couple times a year that can definitely be a big time annoyance all right bach one game on talk about now

we get to Nebraska football LSU clemson speaking about expectations and money now dabo Sweeney has not always dove into the point. He's actually been one of the guys to resist it and has now kind of just started dipping his toes in the water. But then you have Lane Kiffin, who's fully embraced what is the modern era of college football. And someone say to his benefit, because if it's changing, you might as well get with the program or fall behind. And Lynn Kiffin, certainly on the former of the two, but 51 to 10. I mean, the game wasn't close. And unfortunately for me, I was really rooting for Davos sweet name because I appreciated the old school college football of we're trying to do things.

the right way, but then you just go watch that game, you're like, man, like it wasn't, I'll say this much, I didn't know, it didn't seem like a great coaching job on Davosweeney's part, or at least the players didn't show up motivated. Like, I agree with Jay, they talked about it this morning where they look slow. They didn't look very violent out there.

Once LSU kind of got those first few punches in, it felt like they laid over. But I think the bigger question is, is like, is LSU just that good, or is this the downfall of Davo Sweeney and Clemson? Well, think it's probably a combination of both right but ls you did have a wild uh level of success in the transfer portal and then you know picking off NFL rosters which they didn't use those guys but um yeah

i mean it's ls you that they didn't take a huge drop off last year remember that was kind of you know obviously got rid of brian kelly and but they weren't it's not like they finished the season three and nine or something you know it was just their expectations are high there and and then you you bring in link kiffin who I think you've got to give credit, too, is, you know, because I think you're just expected to win at LSU one way or the other. But he's been a really good coach. I mean, what he did at Ole Miss, you know, his rise coming back from, you know, starting at Alabama as their offensive coordinator and kind of changing the way that they did offense before him. Remember, Nick Saban was usually kind of a ground and pound big running backs guy. Link if it kind of went in there and modernized it maybe if you want to put it that way.

But, you know, I so I think LSU is a big part of it. The other thing is Clemson. And I just think that it is, it's kind of the slow decay of take Clemson Tigers football because a couple of years ago, you know, and they haven't been that Clemson Tigers they were in the 2010s, right? When they were winning championships and competing for championships. But in the last couple of years, they have been, you know, in the ACC championship, we've been won at a couple years ago,

still 9, 10 win type of team. And then last year they were 7 and 6. and that's a huge drop-off and continue to kind of try to fight the modern NIL and transfer portal stuff embrace it a little but now you're you're kind of far behind and so I just think we're seeing the slow decay of Davoswini there and it's unfortunate perhaps you know their schedule I looked at it earlier they've got one right team as of now left on it so maybe it'll open up for him but to your point this was this is what you expect when you turn on like a LSU, you know, nickel state game or something like that.

This was just not competitive. Again, some of the numbers beyond it, Clemson was one of 13 on third downs, had 145 total yards in the game and 40 yards rushing. LSU on the other side, 644 yards of all together and 309 yards rushing. I mean, this was, this is a complete mismatch. But, you know, I don't care how bad it gets.

It shouldn't get that bad. And so Clemson fans are going to be upset. they have the right to be upset. But that's, and that's, and everybody will say, and it's true and it's, it's frustrating, but it's also kind of opened your eyes a little bit is you can kind of fight a moral battle and in credit for yourself for doing, for doing that. And he was in a position where he could, right? I mean, he's won championships, consider one of the best coaches in the modern era.

So it's not like he was, you know, had an eight-win season, then all of a sudden decided to go, you know, against the grain with everybody else. He had some slack, if you will. But I just keep kind of going back when I see this is back to when Austin and myself were talking to Troy Danin over the summer. And Austin kind of asked him, it's like, isn't there somebody out there that wants to take kind of a moral stand and maybe do what's right by, you know, what everybody can kind of see.

College football's got its problems. Maybe what's right morally compared to just reaching for money. and Troy didn't basically said, well, yeah, but you mean, you'll be replaced by the next guy that's, that's competing. And so again, in college football, you don't have a commissioner. You don't have one kind of standard goal moving forward. We're seeing LSU now. It was being threatened to kick down to the SEC. It's all these competing interests.

And if you have, if, you know, morality just doesn't generally win in business or in nature. It's my whole religion there, Bob. I've worked out in the long run, but in that different time, you know, tough one. Yeah, it's tough. And yeah, we're still talking of football here. But it's just going to be tough. It's going to be tough unless they adapt to the current age. It's one of those things where I couldn't help.

I was trying to find the audio of it, too. In the case with Davo Sweeney, where, you know, Paul Feinbaum went off on him. So you're just not relevant anymore. And then sure enough, in this game for Elsie, was a tough look. and that's where I always find myself against the wall of like, man, like, you could want to be the better team, like, morally. And one part that Wayne Kiffin does deserve, not respect for, but he deserves less blame for us.

He is not the only coach out there that was trying to bring NFL guys. In fact, there wasn't any out there for Clemson and he took that extra shot. He's fully embraced being the heel, which, you know what, if you're going to go one way about it, just embrace it. But he is not certainly the only guy trying to adjust with the times. And, you know, there's a lot of players you can go, look at a lot of universities where they're trying to bring some of these pro guys back and like, Mike Giffin's kind of the face of it, but he kind of openly accepts being the heel.

It feels like at this point in time, it's where you'll make those comments, you know, midgame, he'll take some shots, you know, on the basketball hoop in the middle of the series there. Like, he's, when you're dominating, your team's that good, you can kind of get away with some of those things. So I just thought that was an incredibly interesting, you know, how those two coaches handled the current era of college football. And I was, you could probably argue that a lot more people were rooting for Dabo Sweeney and what he stood for. And then ultimately, who's the one to win 51 to 10, the guy who adjusted with the times. So, you know, maybe it's a lesson that we'll continue to see throughout the college football year,

but a really tough start for Clemson. I did lie one more thing before we get to the Husker football. I was an emotional crybaby about this on Sunday, not going to lie, the Western Michigan, Michigan gave, you know, whether it was one second, not one second, what were your thoughts on that where they did add inevitably? another second at the end of that to give Michigan a second chance for a hell, Mary. It's funny. It's kind of one of those humbling experiences, right, that we all kind of have to.

And you go back to Nebraska, Texas game where it's like, you think you can explain everything in football if somebody asked you, then all of a sudden you're sitting there going, I guess I don't know what I was talking about because they've got some other camera, right, that nobody has an idea of where it's at or what it looks like that that's going to give you one second left back on there. it's tough you know i think every coach across america would also kind of tell you you know you can't control what the refs do you know that sort of stuff and so they kind of got a win uh around them in western michigan had the chance i mean that you still had one play they had they put one second

on the clock the whole idea that this is some big conspiracy and the big tens protecting that didn't give them that much more chance to win the game now they did win it right but it was still you were still they called a hell merry for a reason it's a prayer you're throwing up a prayer um j jpki and went up there and got that we've seen him uh when he was at utah i mean he's he's pretty darn good player i expected him to be a difference maker at at michigan um you know obviously whether michigan wins that or not they've got a lot of problems to fix they've got a tough schedule to do it so it's going to be interesting to follow that i know the eight people completely kicked michigan out so you know they pretty much took that as a lot

loss. It's just so unfortunate that we can't have the same. I mean, in the modern day and age that we can't say, okay, here is what the rest are looking at. This is, you're seeing what we're seeing. And we can make a determination after that because that's all they did. It's kept showing the replays. And anytime you'd look at it, you'd be like, well, yeah, this game's over. And so it's just been kind of a mess. And then Western Michigan was trying to be kind of respectful, at least enough about it in the post game. They had a lot of composure. Yeah. And now the Mac is going against that and they want the win.

So it is, it is a mess. It is an absolute mess. And we just need, of all the things again that go wrong with college football, this was not one of them that I, that I had thought about before. And now, you know, now I just want the television project to show me what the rest are looking at

so we can all be on the same page. That's the part. I don't ever understand on all of this. It's like we got our mega studios. Like you guys, we got sensors. We got cameras. us like we have all the technology to make sure we get this right.

Great. Can we see it? Well, no. You guys watch your normal broadcast. When we go to replay, we'll have the ref show you the replay a hundred times and talk about it. We won't show you what we're looking at. And that's the other part.

For me, if you wanted to go like full conspiracy, like it's not that one play. Like for me, it was like there was just bad calls. I thought kind of towards the end there where they had a face mask right in front of the rest's face. So that inevitably didn't get called.

But you did have the Western Michigan coach. So he thought it was actually officiated. really well. So he wasn't taking any shortcuts saying like, yeah, they just cheated to get this win. But then it doesn't help that it's like Michigan who not that long ago had Conor Stallions. And someone say, do they really deserve that national championship? And then they had a lot of drama after, obviously, but there's a Romer situation. So it's just like one of the universities, that's the worst thing that could happen. If you want to like get into people connecting the dots themselves and where I land on it, you know, I'm kind of close to you. I don't think it was this big

rigged conspiracy, although I will say Ad Millis, seconds to the clocks as well. You know, and that's the part where they said, and they put out their announcement how like all the clocks are synced. And it's like, okay, if that's the case, you know, why are we seeing something different than what you guys are seeing? And just put the milliseconds on the clock. You know, when you have one or zero, you know,

maybe like we're seeing zero, but like they, on their replay view, they have, well, it's like it was actually 0.05, like just enough time to get that playoff. And to me, that would just solve so many issues. if you add that and also you got to sync it up. Like just show us what you're seeing. And the more you leave like in the dark, whether it's intentional or unintentional,

is just going to lead people to conjecture themselves and connect the dots. So just frustration when it comes to that. And football is certainly not the only one, but it is one where, boy, when you're going to stop a game and you're going to break things down, not only do you have to be right,

you have to prove why you're right. And that game in the real time right there, I think it was tough for any Western Michigan fans for, you know, how few or how many there were to sit there and feel really comfortable taking that loss. Like at least with the Texas game, I don't think there should have been a second added, but yeah, I can see it. Like, it's like there's a still frame. The clock on the stadiums read one second and it's a little bit blurry. It's up to you to decide if that ball was on the ground or not due to it not being total HD yet at that point in time. But at least there's like proof of like, hey, this is what we're

seeing. That's why we're calling it. I disagree. But I can I can live with it despite my rant. This was one where, hey, what you guys saw is not the real picture. Deal with it. And that's where you just saw like all the madness of meltdown for it. And, you know, it's probably not going to get easier for Michigan. To your point, the AP pulled kicked them out of the top 25. And I think they're right to do so. They just didn't look very impressive out there at all.

All right. We finally to Husker football. We'll get your quick thoughts. Husters get to win. Rough first half. Much better to second half. What was the biggest headline that stood out to you the most? And then now we'll throw out the break and talk more about it for the rest of

the hour. For me, I was just excited about some of the players that stood out. Jamal Rule and just hear Whittington specifically, if you want to kind of go on both sides of the ball. Certainly, the offense look better than the defense. I mean, you can kind of break all that together. But, you know, this was a performance, a score, you know, would have maybe found a different way if we kind of predicted it going into it to get to it. But that's kind of where you expected to be. But to me, it's just kind of exciting because it wasn't a ho-hum game in the fact that it's like, here's a couple guys, how's this going to relate to the Big Ten? You know, all that sort of stuff.

There were some newcomers that came in and impressed right away. And, you know, I think it's been a while since that's happened, where you can look at it and say, hey, these guys are going to be some of the better players on the team. And so for me, that was the biggest thing was just, I wanted to be able to see what Matt Rule said when he said that this is going to be his best team. And he said that a few times there's been asked about it and has said that's the case.

I don't need proof of it. There's no way you're going to prove it against Ohio. But I want to at least be able to see it. Right. And I can see it coming out of that Ohio game. Yeah, there's definitely some flashes. And you mentioned, you know, like to go on both sides of the ball. Jazeer was actually one of those guys to be on both sides of the ball.

He was in that tight formation, that short yard situation. And they brought that one back in there. You know, it was interesting. I believe Orge talked about it, how last year they just didn't feel like they had guys that could do it. This year, they felt like they had some dudes. You know, so they put that package back in. And obviously, versus Ohio.

how it worked out great. What does it look like versus other big 10 opponents is to be seen yet. We do got Eric. I knew this was going to open up some old ones talking about that Texas one second. He said, shut it, Harrison. There was definitely not one second left again, Texas. He says, you and Bach deserve each other. Are you bad news, Bach or what's that? I've also mentioned my beliefs that there maybe could have been a second. I said, maybe. I'm not going to go fully one way or the other. Don't go anywhere.
