Free chicken.
Free chicken.
You just got to go see him.
Chicken.
You got to get down there.
I like chicken.
Yeah.
Get down there.
If you are a sports fan or a Husker sports fan,
you may have noticed some of the student athletes quoting and mentioning Lauren Burnett.
And there is a reason why some of the conversation is that the student and the athlete need care.
They need attention.
They need support.
It has happened far too many times in recent space and along the lines.
Lauren Burnett is a standout player from James Madison.
University. She helped the school to their to their world women's college world series run
last year, passed away at the age of 20. Sophomar catcher, third and team at home run, second
an RBI. A team leader from McDonnell, Pennsylvania started all their games, went through.
The reasons why and the how don't matter. But when student athletes,
tell you out loud that the pressure is getting to them, then we need to pay attention to the
students and the athletes, be there for them, support them. I asked this question in the previous
segment, I'll ask again, what is the priority and focus for a coach at a Division I school
or any school in general? And I will tell you this emphatically. I don't care.
what people tell you the focus should be.
Money and winning will happen
because and only if
you take care of the student athlete first.
Rule in coaching for me is simple.
I am never, ever going to choose the person
after the player.
I can never, ever make a decision
choosing the player over the person.
The human being comes first.
I have to coach and make decisions from that.
I cannot choose the player over the person.
And as we make decisions and we engage student athletes,
let's be specific.
Parents, remember as you go to games
and watch your student athletes,
remember the young person first the things you yell the things you say the things you wish for
choose your child first the player is second choose the person first it's the same engagement
that we do professionally choose the person over the employee the person matters
matters as you engage on social media remember it's the person first then the thing that you
are approaching or dealing with or consuming as a coach at Nebraska Alabama USC Virginia Tech
James Madison UCLA Houston whatever whatever as the leader of that program it is your
responsibility it is your duty to take care of
of the people under your watch.
You have assistance and all those other things,
but guess what?
As the charge of the program
and the charge of a business,
the charge of a department,
or the charge of a family,
you have to take care of the people first.
The titles will go away
and what you will leave is a residue
of what you thought of the person.
Take care of our young people,
coaches, community,
social media, and other.
We have to do better for our future.
These are our young people.
They will take care of us when we get old.
Your words have permanent value.
Take note of your personal value.
Take note of your words.
Be kind to people simply because
because we spend too much time being vindictive,
venomous, poisonous, and it's just time to stop.
Support those that you can support simply because that person deserves it.
As would you.
As would you.
We are getting in the weeds with this stuff, and I'm just going to say to folks, James
Madison, to any parents out there of student athletes, any bosses out there, any coaches,
as you engage and go through your day today,
take a moment and remember person over player.
Just remember that.
To the James Madison folks, we send our regards.
Our well wishes, prayers for health, goodness, kindness.
The family of Warren Burnett will all stand with you today.
Going forward, we'll do better.
We'll look out for your people.
Husker Nation, look out for your young Huskers.
Look out for them.
They deserve it.
And more importantly, they need it.
I'll send it out to the captain Wingstop.
Y'all have an amazing Wednesday afternoon.
Y'all be good.
