There's going to be lots of stuff that we go over the course of two hours.

You're allowed and I am actually asking you to do so. So give yourself some credit for being flexible and Floyd. Greatly appreciate that. Bach, if you're ready and you can, kind sir, pay the bills, pay the bills.

Visit Hamilton tell.com for more info today. Thank you, thank you, kind sir. Appreciate you. Appreciate you. Of course, I've been on the road. I went to Maryland, D.C., Virginia.
Starting point is 00:03:11 The DMV. The DMV. Its own vibe, it's own the, it was good to see a lot of folks who are ticket listeners and fans and family. We saw them there at the game. Saw a couple more Monday night. at Northwest Field for bears and commanders, sitting in the rain for a bit,
Starting point is 00:03:34 spent a lot of time with some alumni, some commanders alumni, the Brian Mitchell's of the world, who need to be in the Hall of Fame. Let me just say that. Simple, that the greatest, ready for this,
Starting point is 00:03:51 the greatest returner, all around with Turner in the NFL history. We're total yards. that anybody's ever done it. So before anybody wants to get all crazy. Pretty simple. I am, the thing that happens in the space,
Starting point is 00:04:12 Bach, is that a lot of the conversation is driven. It takes one match to start the fire, right? And ultimately, sometimes you forget about why the thing burned down without realizing it has to be an accumulation of acts, right? And so the whole Penn State James Franklin thing is intriguing to me. It's intriguing in a way that they are, that the fire at Penn State caused solely by Penn State then sets a chain of fires through no real doing of the people that it will affect. and Penn State, you know, we talk about no island unto itself, that programs have to understand that this is a collection of member groups
Starting point is 00:05:14 who decide to do business together. That's what college sports is. They're, and they're different groups. There's an overseer, but there's a group who agree to do business together at the highest interest of everybody. not just themselves, but everybody. So when Nebraska makes the decision, they make a decision that, quite frankly, is good and fair to everybody else, right?
Starting point is 00:05:39 Don't throw the whole thing out because you want to do bad business or you want to do a bad deal, right? And so often shoe dealers, shoe dealings, endorsement deals, now NIL, now broadcast partners, now it's all of this thing, and it's money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money. It's all about money. And it kept saying college sports has always been about money. It's just that now transfer portal, internet, podcasts, and regular conversation has just opened the door. We now get to, they pull back the curtain to the Wizard of Oz, and now we get to see the old man working feverishly behind the curtain to make more money. to really give value to themselves.
Starting point is 00:06:31 Now, because Penn State didn't do their job and didn't handle the business, they then create a firestorm. Okay, we're gonna forget the fact that we were one of the four highlighted programs in all of college football last year. They introduced the entire world to James Franklin in full. Now, he had been known to some degree,
Starting point is 00:06:56 But, Bob, we knew, we learned more about James Franklin the last three years because of the winning that he did at Penn State. And then we were sold that Penn State was this great grand thing, right? We were sold that. But then six weeks into your season, you say forget all of that. Forget about all that. You got to go. You got to go. And then in doing so, you shake up the foundation of college football
Starting point is 00:07:31 and the foundation of college football business. See, we forget about the, like the football side of it is one thing, that Penn State, again, one of the four most prominent programs in the country, three months ago, three months ago, they were the feature, they were the cover item for every college football magazine. They went in depth about the way business was being done, how they were handling the transfer portal, what their leadership base was,
Starting point is 00:08:01 the best fan base in all college football, and all the, you know, yada, yada, yada, yada. And they sold all this bill of goods all the while. Wow, there was trouble in River City. This is why I keep saying it's more important to be right than to be first. and everybody rushed to just crown Penn State the best new thing in college football
Starting point is 00:08:31 and the business was being done. A $700 million renovation to Beaver Stadium in the works. A fantastic profit-driven budget. And in bragging about the fact that they were one of the few programs in the country that were working at a profit surplus, they exposed the budget.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Now, Bach, if I tell you that, you're making $5 million, that's your bottom line. Hey, then how are you going to pay $50 million? How are you so free to pay $50 million? Who? Where's the money coming from? And why? Why are you doing this?
Starting point is 00:09:20 And then here's the other thing, Bach. Do you know that Penn State had to shut down a satellite university because they didn't have the money. They were at a $12 million deficit. Hey, Bach, you just found $50 million. With the snap of a finger, it's a miracle. The Penn State boosters and fans and business partners came up with $50 million to change the football situation to its core.
Starting point is 00:09:55 What is your focus? When you say we are Penn State, what are you saying exactly? This week, we are troublemakers. We are wrong. Because your neighbor in the Big Ten, the Nebraska Huskers, minding their business, having one of the best starts that they've had in a decade, sitting at 5 and 1 with a big prominent win on the road in the Big 10,
Starting point is 00:10:25 sitting at 5 and 1 with an opportunity to showcase your new program, your new team, the new Huskers on national television, Friday night in Minneapolis. Showcase this quarterback. Showcase the new running game. Showcase the new offense. Showcase new way of playing defense under a new coordinator. Showcase a new special team's fever and passion having success along the way.
Starting point is 00:10:52 Showcase this remarkable fan base that will travel around the country at a level matched, unmatched by many. Huskers travel. They show up and show out. I saw that Maryland. I've seen it on the road. Now, hey, Bach, your neighbor, if your neighbor doesn't take care of his yard and it starts to grow over into yours,
Starting point is 00:11:20 don't you say something to the neighbor? Yes, you usually do. Right, right. Hey, man, there's a little bit too much noise. Hey, this can start a fire. Fire at your crib starts to fire at my crib. That's just how it works. That's why we're considering each other.
Starting point is 00:11:36 And here's Nebraska. Having a time of, they're having a good old time. Beat Maryland, celebrating, dancing in the streets, dancing in the rain, doing, doing calls,
Starting point is 00:11:46 you know, coming out of the locker room and high-fiving fan base on the road. And that can't even have a good time because your neighbor, the Nittany Lions from Penn State, decide to light a match. Now,
Starting point is 00:12:03 mind you, Matt Rule was minded his own business. Huskers minding their own business. Husker fans minding our own business. And here comes this nonsense of Penn State. To set a fire or two and set it off. Now, Matt Rule didn't ask to be mentioned. He didn't ask to be included in this stuff. When they talked about catching straights,
Starting point is 00:12:34 Matt Rule was five. He was sitting five and one. And with the biggest smile on his face, mine in his business. James Franklin didn't do this. The Nitty line players didn't do this. Hey, Bach, I'm not even sure Penn State did this. You know who did this?
Starting point is 00:13:00 We don't know. We don't know. Somebody got on line and goes, Hey, man, you know who'd be a great pick to, put out that fire at Penn State, and we knew the words. Yeah, you can get somebody who's known, famous, and locally connected. You know who that fits? You know what boxes?
Starting point is 00:13:29 If you check those boxes and you put it in, check GPT, who comes up the dude in Lincoln, Nebraska, mine, in his own business. And then Husker Nation, at maybe the highest level Saturday night that it's been in a while, right? I mean, can we think is there, like, that's a pretty high moment in the last six years, right, Saturday night, five and one, everything looks doable. Minnesota looks beatable, right?
Starting point is 00:14:06 One, you're just a matter of six days away from having the chance to make yourself bowl eligible. year three, Matt rule? Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Throw confetti. Raise a glass. Raise a glass.
Starting point is 00:14:22 And here comes the internet. Here comes Penn State. And he's just go, what is wrong with you? Now, that's just the symptom to the problem. Bach, right?
Starting point is 00:14:44 Symptom to the problem. So then the question becomes, why did this happen? And then how do you fix it or how do you make sure it doesn't happen again? Now, Bot, are you a member, do you enjoy college football, the coaching carousel? Do you enjoy it? Absolutely. I love everything about college football. It's just about.
Starting point is 00:15:06 And that's a, that's, I mean, it's fun. I think, you know, there's a lot of money in this. There's a lot of people that get a. affected all that, but at some point, we also have to remember this is sports, this is entertainment, this is fun. And so I enjoy, yeah, a big part of it. What about the, what about the families that are involved? What about the 105 student athletes at Penn State and Maryland who committed to the idea that James Franklin and Penn State that Matt Rule at Nebraska was going to be an actual thing,
Starting point is 00:15:35 a contracted thing, an agreement in place for us to make decisions for the well-being of our young people and our families based on the agreement that these things are rock solid concrete, that James Franklin is going to be the head coach at Penn State, that Matt Rule is going to be the head coach at Nebraska. What about those families? What about the families of the assistant coaches? What about the kids of the assistant coaches? What about the consultants and the analysts who pick up, move town?
Starting point is 00:16:04 You create this environment of gypsies rather than a community of loyalists. what about that i'd say the same thing if they if they believed all that there is sold the bill of goods they're being naive this is again part of this is uh is i mean if he followed college football he called any sport or you know professional sports especially college sports at this level you've known it's been a long time since you can you could say okay this is the coach i'm signing with that means this is the coach it'll be here years from now in fact it's really never been that way um though it's changed, obviously, to the degree that it has now. So there's a crack in the armor of this thing called college sports, right?
Starting point is 00:16:47 It's a parent, right? Because as a dad, if you came to my crib, if you came to my house, sat in my living room and asked me to give my young person to you and this program with the belief and promise that you're going to be there. Right? the freedom in this is that Penn State should be held accountable. Right? It's not James Franklin because James Franklin didn't quit. He didn't quit.
Starting point is 00:17:17 He was fired. So he didn't break the code, but he also was working under a contract that said, I'm going to be here. There's every belief that he's going to be there. But if you came to my house and promised and asked me for me to have my child commit to you for four or five years at state college Pennsylvania or Lincoln, Nebraska, with the promising commitment that it's going to, we're going to stand as we are.
Starting point is 00:17:48 We're going to, it's only going to get better, right? Because that's the sell to the 17 and 18 year old. Is that not a problem we should probably address? Sir? Again, I just don't know where, I mean, it could be, you might believe that from the one coach, but it's, this is the business. This is the model that college football has operated under a long time. And it's mostly translates to real life as well.
Starting point is 00:18:17 We always talk about teaching lessons through college and all that stuff. If it did, if you, if you're as a father and you commit your son to that university, and with that belief, again, you know, I think just about every coach that that goes in your living room might say that, but you've got to be understanding of what the business is and what the possibilities are ahead. Bach, the only professionals in that room, in that living room, are the coaches in the administration. They're the only ones doing business.
Starting point is 00:18:50 The parents don't know college football business. They don't know college basketball or business. They don't know it. 87% of the athletes, this is the first generation of that family. they got recruited. This is not the norm. It's normal for the universities, and the coaches and the recruiters.
Starting point is 00:19:09 It's not the norm. The first, you got to understand, my mother didn't know anything about recruiting. Knew nothing about it. When people call the house, she's like, well, I don't know what to tell these people. When people come to visit the house, don't know. There's a movie, North Dallas 40.
Starting point is 00:19:28 You familiar with it? Uh-uh. Okay, put that immediately, put that on your list of things. things to watch. Immediately put that at top of the list. North Dallas 40, it is a movie, I want to say the 70s or 80s, starring Nick Nolte and Mack Davis, former country music singer Matt Davis, who plays quarterback for a made-up franchise that closely resembled the Dallas Cowboys. With a with a coach. the GM that closely
Starting point is 00:20:05 resembled the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Landry, and etc. Right? Based on the premise of, I want to say Peter Jet was a receiver for the Dallas Cowboys back of the day, just telling some stories about the life that is in pro sports. And there's a line. Also in this movie is John Matusat. John Matusay, Big John Matusay, former Oakland Raider, you know, NFL, star. and there's a line in it where the coach is is berating him
Starting point is 00:20:37 and berating the team about the way they're going about business. And he said, it's one of my favorite lines from a movie. And he says, that's just it, coach. When we call it a game, you call it a business. And when you call it business, we call it a game. We want to play football. We didn't want to do business. And all of the stuff that happens is it's not balanced.
Starting point is 00:21:13 Bach, would, let's say your son tomorrow, 17 years old, and he's a three-star athlete, four-star athlete, and people start calling. That would be the very first time you went through the recruiting process, correct? That would be the first time that you would be asked to sign an agreement, a legally binding agreement when it comes to college athletics, correct? Correct. Do you have the same balance and knowledge as the people recruiting yourself? Of course not. That's the problem. That's the problem.
Starting point is 00:21:50 Is that this thing gets committed. Now, here's the thing. That's the flint that you play. That something needs to be fixed. Now, a lot of what we talk about in NIL and transfer portal is the money and the change, right? The money and the change. People are just going to get up. John Calpari said yesterday, he was in a holding the pressure.
Starting point is 00:22:11 He goes, yeah, I'm going to do this as long as this is transformational. The moment coaching at this level becomes transactional. I'm out. I'm here to change lives, one family at a time. All the while, coach, you've taken a lot of contracts in your day, bro. You made a lot of money. Seems pretty transactant. for me for the coaches and for the universities.
Starting point is 00:22:43 And now that it's transactional for players, people have problems. The pros are mad that now they're creating more pros. And the new pros, you know how they learn to be professional bot? The professionals closest to them. And if the pros around these athletes are teaching them how to do business, business, dirty business, guess what they're going to do? They ain't going to be loyal either. If the programs aren't loyal and the coaches aren't loyal,
Starting point is 00:23:21 we are building a whole system of athletes and young people and families who are not loyal either. From the top to the bottom, as they say, from the Rudy to the Tootie. You got to fix it. And there might be a way, Bach. There might be a way to fix this. You ready for this? Okay. We're going to go to break.
Starting point is 00:23:45 Park, when we come back, there may be a way to fix this thing. If folks are interested, again, we don't have to have all the answers, but we'll sure as heck try to get to the right question.
