You're listening to one-on-one with DP.
Brought to you by Beatrice Bakery.
On 937 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com.
That's so funny.
I'm wearing a NFL Combine kit.
And the jacket, so on it, it has, you know, DL and the number 24.
So Ruka goes, what's that?
I never understood what the numbers were for.
So the numbers are just to help agents and coaches.
is identify the player from a distance from tracking.
This one is from Jarvis Jenkins from Clemson.
Okay.
So when he came to D.C., I was like,
give me.
Give me a jack.
You don't need it.
You don't need it. You're done with it.
Combines over.
Give me.
I'm bringing out another one tomorrow.
I would like a jacket.
I'm wearing one tomorrow.
I'm trying to think it's a day.
I have one.
It'll be too big for you.
It's two acts.
I'm waiting for something.
Hold on.
It's 2X.
I'm thinking of somebody that's...
It's too.
Well, I know somebody that's around my size, but it won't happen.
No, no, no, no, it won't be...
No, no.
This is what...
Like, you could wear the jacket.
You could wear the jacket.
But you couldn't wear the pants.
You couldn't wear it.
I don't need the pants.
But I like wearing the suit and then the under...
So all the underarmor stuff, underarmor stuff under it was like...
You think Tavon Austin still has his?
Most players still keep theirs.
And then some just reach a point where, you know,
they're done with it.
I'll reach out to Tavon Austin
and see if I'm going to have his.
All right, somebody your size?
I mean, he's bigger.
I mean, there's one person
that I know is right around my size.
But that person,
you know, had connections here.
No longer does.
Kind of does.
So let's avoid that one.
There's some, there's some,
there's some people.
Some want to keep them.
Some don't.
So there's that.
It's got to find the biggest dude there
and asking for his job.
Well, that's what this was.
This is like a 4X, bro.
It's like huge.
Vita Vevei.
Yeah.
I gotta see.
It was, this is huge.
It was huge.
This is 2011.
Wow.
2011, 2011.
A little throwback.
I think the one I'll wear tomorrow is like 2018.
2018?
A little more frequent.
Okay.
Don't tell me.
I'm going to not get it right.
I'm going to try and guess.
Gus says Frank Solich.
I don't think they had combines when Frank was going through.
They scouted by train.
They said, they met at a coffee shop.
They said scouting reports by carrier pigeon.
Yeah, you know, Western Union telegraphs, dot, dot, dot.
Pony Express.
Yeah, he's fast.
Yeah, that was pretty much it.
I'll read this before we go.
What's up, D.P.
You talk about being held accountable in practical terms,
What does that being held accountable mean?
Does it mean that one fails to meet a standard he or she is subjected to punishment?
If so, what's the punishment?
Is it the denial or lost of a right or benefit,
or merely an admonishment to do better next time?
No, it's a standard.
Accountability requires a standard,
and that is the level of work, the level of production,
the level of attention to detail,
the level of preparation, the level of execution.
And being held accountable means that, first of all, you acknowledge what you should be doing, how you should do it, when you should do it.
And then when that does not happen, you have to deal with why wasn't it done?
What's the problem?
Where's the disconnect?
Those things.
Sometimes the accountability is from peer.
And most of my teams, it was from a captain.
Somebody shows up late consecutively.
Captains, what do we want to do?
Now, if I've picked the right captains, their accountability meter goes off
and then how they want to deal with it is a team issue.
It's not a coaching issue.
It's a team issue.
In some cases, it's a coach-to-player issue where you are hurting the team in a way
because the standard has been said about whether it's academics or otherwise.
Punishment is the wrong word for it.
Redirection is actually the better word for it.
re-teaching.
Like if I'm asking you,
this is what the conversation
I was having with Jay.
If I'm coaching you every day to do a thing
and you're not getting the message,
I'm coaching it wrong.
Like it's not the player's fault,
it's my fault.
Then I'm not reaching you,
so I figure out how to reach you.
And then I need to teach you in a way.
Some people are visual learners,
some people are verbal learners,
some are linear,
some are creative.
I have to know my players
and know what's going to reach them.
Right?
That's accountability.
is not punishment and I don't need to bench you to make you accountable.
I'm not teaching you anything but putting you on the bench.
Yeah.
I'm not.
I have to teach you to do things and keeps you off the bench.
Like if you're on the floor, there's a reason why you're on the floor.
You're talented enough.
You're good enough.
But something is missing.
Either you're having a bad day, right?
I'm just a coach.
I know what to do.
I'm just not doing it.
Okay.
Then let's sit here,
recalibrate and figure it out.
But I'm not going to put you at the end of the bench and then cast you like,
you know, Tom Hanks.
I'm not going to do that to you.
Sit next to me.
The first thing a player does when they come off the bench or field or to the sideline
is come to me and we talk about what's going on,
what you see, what you know, and what we're going to do next.
You don't want to bench the players because they're not doing something.
You want them to be out there, so you're trying to figure out a way to get it around,
get it into their minds.
Like you can do this.
We've worked on this.
You need to do this.
And, you know, if, you know, you're having a day like that where it just isn't working,
sometimes it just isn't working.
I don't want to bench you for the thing that you did.
I want to bench you because the next player deserves an opportunity
to do the things you haven't done
or because, quite frankly, that's just our rotation.
I need to fix the problem.
I need to fix the problem.
Like that, to me, is coaching.
I don't need to punish you.
I need to coach you.
That's the difference.
That's accountability.
We're out.
We're going to get out of here.
Captain show up next.
Don't go anywhere for Sean Jackson here.
