You're listening to One-on-One with DP, brought you by Mary Ellen's Food for the Soul,
on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticket FM.com.
Welcome back to one-on-one, four, two, four, six, eight-five,
started having to text on Honda Lincoln Hotline.
I have to thank you, because the moment we started talking about that,
we had a couple of listeners text me about making donations for NIL for the student athletes.
Just do it, yeah.
Just text me.
That's the easiest way to do it.
And then what we do is we collect it,
and then we put it in a stipends for the student athletes,
what you guys donate.
100% of what you donate goes to them.
And so you can designate and you can say,
hey, I want to do this to the volleyball shows,
the football shows, you know, gymnastics, whatever.
We can match that and put that in and get them in the system.
Or you could just do what we had a listener just ask
if they could sponsor the gymnastics show.
Yes, yes, you can.
Yes, you can.
As a matter of fact,
You only have to have your company.
They asked her, do I have to have a company to do it?
No, you can do it yourself.
And then as a part of this, what we do within those, you designate that they thank you during the course of their shows, if that's what you want.
The two folks just said they just want to donate.
They don't want it, want acknowledgement for it.
They just want to do it.
And we had, just had a textor in, you ready for this?
You ready for this?
In Carney.
In Carney, who wants to.
support Sunday morning pancakes.
So we just worked that out.
Shout out, Carney.
Yep, yep, yep, greatly appreciate it.
Speaking of Carney as well,
August 20th, Salt Lake City,
I will be in front of your guy,
Kamarayuzman, as he defends his title
in Salt Lake City, UFC 279.
Throw your lobes.
Yeah, yep, I'll throw your lobes in Utah.
Yeah, I'll throw that up.
Simple, right? Simple business.
So you guys can be a part of
what we do, that's easy, just reach out.
I have a loper, like, cut out head.
Please do.
I'll give it to you so you can take it.
Please do.
Like, anything loper.
Yeah.
Like, get a hat, get something that.
Yeah, God, for you, I would do that.
Mattie's dad says this,
a logo light, you shine on people,
the possibility that you spread,
positivity that you spread through the community,
DP, keep being you.
That's, I mean, what's what we're trying to do.
Thank you for, I mean, that's you being good in the community
and adding that sort of stuff.
Kevin says, that girl has real,
and major talent. Wow. Yeah, like, that's next level. That's not the average person walking around.
Like, she was here. We were asking her to do karaoke, and she was like, I'm a little nervous, a little nervous.
You know, I thought, I don't sing. Yeah, I don't really sing, right? This is really a thing. And then, wow, right?
Doris Kevin says, yeah, super talented. Yeah, I just, it's amazing. It's amazing along the way.
We found a 20-second clip of Nicol and Hames talking on Adidas.
Rico, if you would, kind sir.
My favorite takeaway, Kelsey Robinson actually said it,
is learning to separate who you are, your identity, from your sport.
That's been huge for me and the mental health side of it all,
and learning to love myself no matter what happens on the court.
There it is.
like a big part of the initiative to, one, to create more sports talkers in the space,
people that actually do the thing that we talk about or that we watch or that we care about
and having them be able to just put down the facade that they have to have it all together
and have to be perfect.
No, that's not what, that's not what we're doing.
Like, that's not what we're, that's not, the personification and humanization of student athletes.
like that's the whole point
like there's no point to be a jerk to somebody
because you don't know them
okay well if I can get you to engage
because you know them then that we want
and a big part of the change in the station
is having actual Huskers in the space
who can talk about the stuff like it's much easier
for us to have some understanding
of what goes on the football program
because we have five to ten football players
who are in here on a weekly basis telling us
what's going up.
Like, we can follow volleyball now because, oh, my goodness gracious, they know us and we know them.
Like, we know what they go through.
Same thing for baseball.
Same thing for bowling to find out what these young ladies go through.
And with volleyball, we pick, I mean, pick Nicklin and Kenzie.
It was purposeful because if you spend 30 seconds around Nicol and Hamid, you know she's special.
Like, you know, she's just, she's special.
The stuff that shows up on the field is,
nothing compared to who she is off of it.
Like that volleyball thing that she does, top level, all-American level.
But that personal thing, like her fire and her energy and her goodness.
The intensity carries over.
Right?
That Kenzie, you think Kenzie's this elegant queen who walks in the room and then she gives you the laugh.
That laugh and you go, okay.
Like, that's what it is.
And it shows how much it means, right?
Right?
It shows how much it means.
I can only imagine, like, I've been in the room with both of them
and their hilarious, kind-hearted, good souls.
Right?
I can only imagine being in the room with the volleyball team
because I can't imagine them surrounding themselves
with anyone that is less than.
we did the event for March Madness, right,
where we were down at Tanners.
And the original idea was that we were going to have the McGowan's brothers,
but of course life took them in a different space that they had to prepare for.
And so we invited football players, right?
So we call our guys.
We call Norie.
We call Banks and we say, hey, listen, we need you guys to show up.
Tell us what's required.
They say, we got you.
We got you, coach.
they showed up with 20 football players to sit there and just engage with the crowd and hang out and share themselves.
And you went, oh, I get it.
Okay, I get it.
Like they actually like each other.
Now, they're trying to figure out how to work together, but the fact that they care matter.
Well, at the same time, you know, I reached out to Nicklin and Kenzie.
I'm like, hey, listen, we got this event.
We want to put some people in a space where Husker fans can come and meet you and hang out.
are you guys open for that?
And they said, yeah.
Yeah, we're in.
We got you.
Like, yeah.
Sure.
So they show up, they call and they said, hey, listen, how many people can we bring?
And I'm like, bring everybody.
Like, just jokingly thinking, you know, if you get five people.
You have like three other people with you.
Yeah, it's a pretty, like, well, no, if you're going to feed us, we're there.
Like, that's going to be what we're going to do.
And they said, well, can you arrange that?
So we got to go to in a space and talk to Brett and say, hey, listen, there may be some
additional people.
like the more the more than Mary fine perfect we got the entire volleyball team the entire volleyball
team showed up took pictures signed autographs just had conversation with people across the board
like whoever was in the room and for the listeners that were there that night they can tell you
the football players and the volleyball players simply just the same thing happened with baseball
brice matthew showed up cam chick showed up like those guys and they just engaged the community
was special.
But what we wanted people to get and understand it,
these are the best of the best people.
Like I'll say it again,
the best of the best people.
That these young people go to class,
all achieving in that superior scholar athlete realm,
all of them put in the 20 to 40 hours of athletes,
of athletic training, research, repair, rejuvenation, recover.
They all make themselves available for the young people in the state of Nebraska
to come and look at and see that they can be and it can achieve.
They do that.
They sign autographs, take pictures.
They make your kids, your daughters, your son smile.
They come out and hang out with the Husker fans who pay to see them play.
but then they say, listen, come and meet me as a person.
Meet me where I'm at.
And I'll introduce you to the real me.
And to remember the first time we did Nicklin, we did talking trash.
And somebody said, yeah, but they're not broadcasters.
I'm like, no, they're not.
They're people.
They're really good people.
They're really good people.
I mean, think about this.
Most of us sit at home and watch them and judge.
while they're actually efforting blood, sweat, tears, bruises, broken bones, soft tissue injury,
as Kenzie Knuckles may aware, look, they go through their anxieties too,
and they go through them on a large stage with bright lights and large microphones.
And their anxieties are open.
And she said, listen, it's a struggle sometimes.
So this is why I say
When you sit in your space and you decide
that you're just going to rattle off
how awful some student athlete is,
don't do it.
Don't do it.
These are the best of us.
Look, it's a joy to be around them.
And this is our point is to bring them to you
so you get to know them.
Like you get to sit with Priscilla Joseph.
Listen, the idea of who Priscilla is
versus the reality.
I don't think there's anybody in the program who cares more about it
about the young people in that space than Priscilla.
She's emotionally invested in it, right?
And doesn't have to do it.
She got enough money.
She don't have to come here for the nickels and times.
We pay her, right, to come in and share and say,
hey, listen, this is kind of the stuff that I know.
And remember, this is a college athlete and a former Division I softball coach.
she knows the game she knows what happens behind the game and she's willing to share herself with
husker nation for a greater connection and greater experience i just i want you like go and find
the nicklin haames uh go find her on social media uh and go check out the adida stuff that was
happening again they chose 15 of the best people the best young ladies and all of athletics
all of it the best people the best spokespeople the best faces the best hearts the best minds they picked them and they came straight to link in Nebraska and got nickel and hams and if you don't if you aren't proud of that and you don't get how big that is in the first grand sweeping nililil deal by adidas they picked nickel and haines and Nebraska kind of a massive deal just just kind of right it's a huge and she's in
that space, like she's there on the
shoot with Billy Jean King.
Right? Like this is
huge.
And we spend our time dealing
with minutia, but the reality is
for the things that are wrong with the athletic department
or the things that we want better for in the
athletic department, you also
have to be fair and say,
listen, whether it's
softball and the number of
all Big Ten scholar
academics, softball and all
all the Big Ten performers, if it's gymnastics and all the All-Americans, Scholastic All-Americans,
and the folks who are traveling, if it's track and field and the folks who are going to
World Championships, right?
Lou, we know you got Husker, you got a Husker freshman who's going to compete.
She's one of the top 15 shot putters in the entire world, in the entire world as a freshman
at the University of Nebraska.
You can spend your time talking about the negative stuff, but you also deserve the right
to celebrate and embrace these.
There's a freshman who's one of the top 15 shot putters in the world.
That's everybody.
We're not talking collegiate.
We're talking about the best shot putters in the world.
That's every woman that shot puts.
She is top 15.
She's top 15 as a freshman.
Big 10 freshman in the year.
Again, kind of a big deal.
Kind of a big deal.
Excellent.
Eoh Hanson.
Go check it out.
Go follow her and say, what's up?
Thank you.
Congratulations.
Like they deserve it.
Emily Spence, who just,
just represented Canada and won a bronze medal.
And then Madison Ronquilio,
who just,
they just won a gold medal in their offseason challenges.
These folks are out there.
We're not even getting to the wrestlers
and the men's gymnast.
And the track and field guys.
The freshman volleyball players.
Right.
The best there is.
I just wanted to spend a day celebrating our young people.
because these are some really cool kids.
These are some really cool young people.
I mean, Kenzie's just in the program, and guess what?
She's killing the game.
She is killing the game.
Women's basketball.
Look, Jess Shelley has the future of all futures.
Alexis Markowski has, I just want to give you a heads up.
She's changed herself.
She is going to be a problem.
She has changed her.
She has got, look, she's been working.
Exciting.
She's been working.
And if you haven't paid attention,
Kathleen Horde is a part of the Husker Nation.
Oh, my goodness gracious,
lock yourself in and go find out who this young lady is
because she is exceptional.
She's exceptional.
You've got young freshman volleyball players
who are just on top of it.
And you're going to return a softball roster
that could actually win the dang thing.
You're returning five starters in basketball,
women's basketball.
that's a tournament team.
You got off all starters back.
You're missing one, but that's another story for another time.
But five starters, bat.
Tournament team.
A team that knocked off the three big teams in the Big Ten conference last year.
Look, you're going to have a whole new roster of baseball guys.
But listen, if you aren't paying attention to what Bryce Matthews is doing in his summer league, you probably should.
It's being rude to one of his teammates.
Emmett Olson, who was in here last night with Kyle Perry.
Yep.
If you didn't catch Kyle Perry's show last night, go jump on the podcast.
It was pure fire.
It was absolute fire.
Emmett Olson talked about his time with Team USA.
Right.
I mean, listen.
I'm sorry.
Did you hear me?
I said Evan Olson was talking about his time with Team USA.
Team USA.
Team USA that there's a Husker who was returning who was one of the elite players in the country.
Man, oh man.
And oh, yeah, it's football season.
It's football season.
It's only football season.
we're just about to start school.
And all of the programming, the ticket weeknight programs,
we'll be back in full.
Monday through Thursday, 6 to 11 at night.
Go and find these stuff, subscribe to them.
Follow them.
Again, you can follow the,
you can subscribe to the YouTube feed for those shows.
You probably should because that's a representative.
And I'll say this.
Let me say this.
Okay.
So a big part of Husker Nation is this,
that when something Husker good is there,
that people will run to it and support it.
That's what they say.
Right, that any time a recruit that's going to,
that possibly is going to get an offer from Nebraska,
and they'll say, okay, the Husker Nation,
show me what's up.
And there'll be 10,000 Husker fans that will come running to it.
They'll go from 100 followers to 20,000 followers.
Well, here's the thing.
How about you do that for the people who are actually here representing you
on a local, statewide, regional, national, and worldwide scale.
How about you do that?
How about you support them that way?
Support their shows, support their programs, support their work,
support their efforts, and be prideful of them as you do it.
The ones that are currently here.
They're here representing Husker Nation at its best.
If you subscribe to the YouTube, you can put the alerts on
so that it pops up on your phone when the show starts.
And if you're not catching the Kyle Perry stuff,
Listen, I hate.
Sam Hoyberg's coming on Tuesday nights.
Teammates will be back tonight at 6 o'clock.
I'm just saying to you, there's stuff to celebrate.
Teammates, look, it'll be a recruiting drive.
We're going to ask for more mentors.
We're going to tell the stories of all the good things that are being done.
I'm going to meet a special young man who wants to do this as a part of his career,
and he's wide open to it.
So, you know, I was going to take the night off, but they ask, can you be here?
I'm going to be here for that young man.
Because he may be the next somebody.
And we're going to support, and that's what we're going to do from it.
Toward the break.
We'll talk a little bit more about that young lady from Carolina.
Kenzie Davis.
Kenzie J. Davis.
Kenzie J. Davis.
Go follow her, go find her, go support her.
But we'll talk about her next.
Watch live on Facebook, YouTube, or Twitch.
You're listening to One-on-One-on-1 with DP on 937, the Ticket, and the Ticketfm.com.
Thank you.
