Starting point is 00:00:00 one-on-one with D.P. Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket. We're on one-on-one on 93-7. The ticket DP again out today. But myself, Jake Buckman, in with Nick Sainert, as we have been celebrating Nebraska basketball. Of course, a lot going on this weekend in this past weekend. Dylan Ryola committing now to Oregon.
Starting point is 00:00:35 There will be plenty of that to be talked about throughout the day. Nick, I know. you already gave your initial thoughts on that. The one thing I do kind of think, too, is crazy. We're talking about it during the break is if Dante Moore comes back to Oregon, and I know it's kind of being floated out there. Not great advice from his camp, in my opinion. Well, no, but it would be one of like the biggest wins in college football history.
Starting point is 00:00:58 I just don't, I don't see the number two picking the draft. No. Or up there as in a two quarterback draft. And you can have your own arguments there, too. I mean, I do not absolutely love either Fernando Mendoza or Don. more as my top, you know, as a pick. I'm not out on Mendoza. I think he's a cornball.
Starting point is 00:01:16 I don't know if, you know, LinkedIn page, man. Yeah, his LinkedIn page is great. He's got to get, you know, put the husband on there. But, you know, and so, I mean, he might be great. I'm not, I'm not saying he's not one way or the other. But I'm just saying at the top of that draft, it's no, it's kind of a two quarterback draft, right?
Starting point is 00:01:34 And I'm just saying for myself, as we look back over the years of, okay, you know, when we say that, usually there's a quarterback. down the line that's better than one of the top guys that we say. So I'd say look out for that. But the final point is that Dante Moore would be passing up a lot of money. I know Oregon's got a lot of money, but a lot more money to come back there and for what, right? I mean, Oregon's got their own problems too. You know, this is the second year in a row.
Starting point is 00:02:01 They've been blown out in the playoffs. So kind of question, you know, a lot of questions there as well. Of course, they did win the Big Ten last year. so, you know, they're not too far off, but in these games they are. So, I mean, there's a potential that Dylan Riala goes there in red shirts, but I would say that that is a very small potential that that happens. And so I'm a little bit disappointed. One thing that I will say that I heard from you that I would say is up in the air is,
Starting point is 00:02:28 will Dylan Raleigh, return to Lincoln, the return trip 2027, as many known, next year, Nebraska will play Oregon, but it will be in Austin Stadium, which would be an incredible trip. Yeah, hopefully with Dylan Ryola started and Nebraska fans would like to make their way out there. But, you know, there's always the chance that Dylan blows up at Oregon. Oregon's been developing quarterback's well. So I'm just not completely sure that he'll be there as a senior.
Starting point is 00:02:52 But yeah, I mean, meteoric rise from Dylan is a potential. Definitely in the Oregon uniform. I just think, I don't know, Buck, I told you, I know there's a lot of rumors and things like that about not wanting to go to the jets and stuff. I understand that to a certain extent, but also in addition to the money, these guys' goals are to make the league. This is an opportunity for Dante Moore to make the league. And it's almost a surefire, right?
Starting point is 00:03:24 And could he make it next year? Yeah, right? But what if knock on wood, God forbid, he terrorist ACL? Like what happens? You just, you don't. There's nothing 100% certain in sports. And this is as close as you can, I think, get to saying,
Starting point is 00:03:42 hey, you're going to be a top five pick in the draft. Yeah. You just don't turn that down. Number one. The face of a franchise, all that. Number two is you add the money into it. And the signing bonuses continue to get larger and larger. Number two. Number three, I think you look at Dante Moore and you say,
Starting point is 00:04:00 all right, even if you are, excuse me, drafted by the Jets, is there some is there a little bit of of arrogance in you that says I'll be okay like I can I can help change this thing I can help turn the one yeah yeah I can be the one if there's not should you really be the quarterback of an NFL franchise like should you really like maybe sometimes that's what you need is a little bit of ego to turn around a franchise and this is not the Jets under Rex Ryan Glenn it's a different there's different GM there's a it's it I get it the Jets are bad. And there's organizational issues all over the league.
Starting point is 00:04:39 But what happens next year if the Jets are in the very same position? Like, are you going to draft Dante Moore after he outwardly said, hey, I'm not going to go to the draft because the Jets would choose me? Like, I just, it's almost a surefire of a thing that you can get drafted. And also, Bach, I said at the beginning, we expected the start of the season, Arch Manning to be in this conversation. Claytonick to be in this conversation, other quarterbacks as well to be in this conversation of,
Starting point is 00:05:07 of, okay, who's the top three draft picks off the board at the quarterback position? Dante Moore now, you look around and go, okay, Archmanning had a bad year. He's coming back to college. Kate Klubnick. No, Archmanning had a good year at the end, but yeah. Yes, but he's coming back to college.
Starting point is 00:05:20 Not where they expected him to be. And now, so it's like, okay, so now what? Like, I got to take advantage of timing. And I'm put myself in a position to where I can go to the league while these guys all kind of just took themselves out of the equation. I need to take advantage of this. Yeah. I just,
Starting point is 00:05:38 I find it tough to believe. I do. And I think that's a good point is that, you know, this is kind of a weaker quarterback draft and you never know what comes out next year. Yeah. And it's also fascinating, though,
Starting point is 00:05:48 with Dante Moore is that he did, you know, he did sit out one season with Oregon. So a lot of people think, well, maybe Dylan Ryla could do the same. And that certainly is a possibility. And maybe part of the reason you commit at this point.
Starting point is 00:05:59 But I think all of it is with the experience. expectation that he's going to leave. Dante Morris' time at UCLA sometimes gets framed as, you know, he didn't play there. He actually started the first half of the season and was replaced by Ethan Garbers, if you remember that, and that worked out for UCLA against Nebraska in the very least. But, you know, had 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Then goes to Oregon and look what he's been able to do in just one year. And that's why I think you look at, that's why I say with Dylan Ryola,
Starting point is 00:06:27 I mean, he's coming in to Oregon with a lot more playing time under his. belt. Obviously, all the advantages of, you know, what Oregon has built there within the Big Ten, he's going to be more, his team is going to be more talented than 80, 95% of the teams that he's going to play. I think there's also something to be said, like, maybe Dylan and the Ryola family have learned a little bit too. Like, okay, what, what is the, the, the, the most important things right now? And I think that they looked at it through two years at Nebraska. And they, they, they, they, they, probably they made their money, right?
Starting point is 00:07:04 We know that on a multitude of fronts. And for the most part, Dylan was beloved here. Like, he was, he was loved here at Nebraska. And everybody had his back and everybody wanted him to succeed. And everything was given to him, provided for him to win here at Nebraska. I think that maybe they looked at themselves in the mirror and said, okay, you know, what? What is priorities now? Like, we did this thing.
Starting point is 00:07:29 but now let's figure out how can we get Dylan on a trajectory to the league. Right. And you look at the schools that were in conversations with Dylan, whether that was Louisville or now Oregon, what do those two places have in common? And yes, they've won more than Nebraska on the football field, but Jeff Brom is as good of a quarterback's coach as you might find in college football. And then number two is you have Oregon who has developed quarterbacks over the last decade.
Starting point is 00:07:56 I think that there's priorities here. I do not think that this was a money situation. It's not like Oregon outbid Nebraska or Oregon outbid somebody else. I'm confident in saying that this is probably a pay cut for Dylan. And that's okay. Like I think it shows, number one, maybe it's an indication on where Nebraska is viewed development-wise for recruits and transfers and in college football. But then on top of that, it was maybe the Raiolas have learned a little bit here to go, all right, this is the priority. is we got to figure out what is the next best thing for Dylan's development.
Starting point is 00:08:32 Because money's not an issue for the Ritalists. We can't sit here and be like, yeah, they need the money. Yeah. But again, and again, I don't know, especially when Nebraska plays Oregon, obviously, the feelings are going to come up. He can kind of be, you know, we can kind of make an enemy out of him as much as we want. Yeah. But I agree with you as I look back on it, even in a short time.
Starting point is 00:08:52 And again, people might disagree. I tend to like Treve Alberts a little bit more than the next fan, right? Yeah. So I get it. But when I look at the situation, that's exactly how I evaluated. He, one, is that I don't think Dylan Riala failed Nebraska. He came in here and got Nebraska to back-to-back bowl games, which you can scoff ads like, oh, seven wins, this, and this and that.
Starting point is 00:09:10 Okay, and I pointed out now is that, yeah, it's not where you want to be. It's not heaven, but it's purgatory. It's not hell. Yeah. It's not what you've been of not getting to bowl games and all of that for seven years. And so that, I don't think that he failed Nebraska, but I do think Nebraska, to a degree, failed him. It's not to say, I would say the coaching staff, just the way that it had all played out.
Starting point is 00:09:33 I mean, listen, again, listen to what you're saying through a quarterback that has NFL hopes here. You had to switch offensive coordinators midway through his freshman year. You had to fire his offensive line coach. Forget the tie to the Raiola's. If I told you you're a quarterback looking for the right place to develop into the NFL, and I've already fired your offensive coordinator and I fired your offensive line coach, and then we're going into year three and everything. Now you've got it.
Starting point is 00:09:57 you know, as opposed to going to an established place like Oregon, like you said, that has a track and in a history, a track record of creating these, you know, these potential targets. And again, from what I just said as well, too, you come back to Nebraska, you're, you're 50, 50 on most your games with you got more talent on the field than everybody else. And he's a guy that we know, and part of it is that, you know, he's going to need a good offensive line to keep him upright. Yeah. As opposed to Oregon, you know, like we saw with DJ Lateef, when he gets to go against,
Starting point is 00:10:27 in some lesser competition, he can put up some numbers. I'm not saying that it's a direct correlation, but Oregon's going to be talented, more talented than 11 other 12 teams they play next year. So that's going to greatly help him in his numbers and his perception and all of that. But we got to get to break. We didn't get back to Nebraska. We'll do that in the final segment.
Starting point is 00:10:46 But it is an interesting day with, with RELIC-committing to Oregon. It's a great point. It's a, I just would find it fascinating. And this is, this is an indictment, I think, on Nebraska.
Starting point is 00:10:57 And frankly, on the coaching staff. And it all points back to Matt Rule is just, like, I look back at the 2023 coaching staff. And we're talking through three seasons. I would love it's tough because things get scraped off the internet quite a bit. When when coaches make moves and stuff, I would love to know the overall number of changes from the staff, from the initial staff. Like, and for a variety of reasons, right?
Starting point is 00:11:27 that's because they've taken a new job, i.e. Tony White, right? Rather they've followed that coach to a new job, i.e. Terrence Knighton, right? Whether it's been off the field issues like Bob Wager or Evan Cooper, if for whatever reason, right? So I think there's been a lot. Demoted. Is it? Yeah, or demoted. Yeah. Like, so like there's just been Ed Foley. Yeah. Still, still on staff, but not at special teams. Yeah. Right. So there's just been a lot, man. And, uh, that stuff is, it is a feather in the cap of other programs to negatively recruit against Nebraska. And programs are very good at negatively recruiting.
Starting point is 00:12:05 And when Nebraska, I don't want to say makes it easy, but there are a lot of things that you can point to for teams to negatively recruit against Nebraska. And it's interesting too. In a situation like Oregon, I don't know if you have to, right? I mean, you just turn on the tape, look at the records, all that sort of stuff.
Starting point is 00:12:21 But yeah, in likewise type competition, that could be out there. And for the people, and for like Nebraska, the schools that they're battling recruits for. The schools that they are battling recruits for, the organs of the world, right? It comes down a lot of times to the wins and losses, and it comes down to the,
Starting point is 00:12:40 because everybody's got great facilities. At that level between Oregon and Nebraska and A&M and Alabama and Miami, like all these guys got great facilities. And so it's, a lot of these guys have great and enough NIL as well to make it happen. If Nebraska truly wanted to make something
Starting point is 00:12:59 happen with a recruit and they felt so serious about this guy, they will find a way. There's loopholes. You can tie it into your multimedia partner. Nebraska can get Playfly included into some of the stuff like LSU was trying to do for Brennan Sorsby. There are ways to make it work if you want it bad enough. And I think Nebraska wants it bad enough. So then you look at the other things. Wins and Losses, development, getting guys to the league.
Starting point is 00:13:22 How is Nebraska fared in that the last decade? Hopefully it's turning in the right direction. Hopefully it is. We'll talk about more of it and wrap it up the show next year on one-on-one on 93-7 the ticket. Watch live on Facebook, YouTube, or Twitch. You're listening to One-on-One with DP on 937 the Tickets and the Ticketfm.com.
