You're listening to one-on-one with D.P.
Brought you by Canopy Street Market on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com.
Rinal segment with Peter Cobalt, Husker, Men's Tennis.
Five weeks in downtime in season.
Coach, what is your philosophy on how this should be handled, at least in your mind?
Is it about recovery, is about fine-tuning?
is it enhancing, is it enabling, what, maybe building up a player, maybe resetting a player's place,
location level, et cetera. What's a buy week in season about? Yeah, I think it gives you a chance
to, you know, really look at everything. First, you got to get healthy. The guys that need to
get healthy, get healthy. But as a coaching staff, it gives you a chance. I think obviously you can
recruit. I don't know how much longer there is to recruit, but you're
You're always recruiting on off weeks.
You're always, you know, evaluating the staff.
If there's anything that you might want to look at changing,
you probably look at or not changing, pull out,
but like adjusting it or tinkering with it or building on, you know,
I think this by week's coming at a really good time for the guys.
But, you know, it's also, you know, like you're trying to,
I say it in tennis, you're trying to turn 75 cents into a dollar.
You got you banged up.
You got to get healthy.
You got to stretch your money a little bit here with the,
with the team and see what you know can you get it to 85 cents can you get to 90
95 cents how healthy can you be I think that's the name in the game these days
because you got to win you know if you make the playoffs you got to win three four
games in the playoffs to win championship so you got to stay healthy so that's probably
priority number one if I were to guess and then start to look at Penn State
I think Penn State plays this weekend so they'll get a they'll get to watch another
live game of Penn State so they'll be doing that and and you kind of
make sure they have everything buttoned up
when they head out to State College.
It is fascinating in the space to think that,
especially in the Big Ten,
where there's a bunch of cathedrals.
There's some real museums that you play in
and you try not to get caught up in
where you're playing or who you're playing.
As a coach,
how would you address going to the tennis version of Penn State,
Happy Valley, Beaver Stadium,
and try to get people to calm
down you want them to appreciate it sure but you also don't want to make it bigger than it is
i think that's you you go there and you you appreciate it you're like hey man this is why i came
to nebraska to playing games like this on the road at penn state is it is it a night game do we know
we don't know yet they it's on the schedule to be determined it's on the six day hold
well we'll we'll see it could be a night game could be a wide out who knows um that would be
unbelievable but it just goes back to if you just treat every day the same way if you actually go
through the process and do it the right way every single day, then it doesn't really
matter. The game environment kind of just elevates the hype, I guess. But if you're, if you,
if you go in there thinking you got to do something different or play a different way or do this or do
that, then you're, I think you're, you're not seeing it the right way. You just do the stuff
that, you know, you're trained to do every single day and you go from there. We were talking about
Emmett Johnson just released that Emmett Johnson was named to the Maxwell Award semifinalist.
let's go for the best running backs in the country is one of 13 semifinalists in the country
uh the the the the the the reed as he looks to join mike rosier in 1983 as uh as nebraska's
second maxwell winner they've only had one all the great running backs they've only had one
it's amazing um of the 13 semifinalists um it's uh johnson and uh love from notre dame are the running backs
on the list. So
the Maxwell Ward
is the collegiate player of the year. The fact that
there are two running backs on the list tells
you Emmett is in very elite
space.
He's second nationally in rushing
yards while he tops the nation with
1,131 yards from scrimmage
entering
next week's game against Penn State.
His 1,100 yards
is division
for all FBS players, his
tops. So when people talk about
and his 36 receptions is second nationally amongst running backs.
So Emmett is putting up the number.
He was named the Maxwell Club player of the week for last week,
first performance to UCLA and rightfully so.
And it's got to mean a lot when those sorts of things happen,
not only to the young man,
because the young man deserves it.
He's gone through some stuff to get everything that he's getting now.
And to fight through the doubt and the people who doubted him,
who said, well, who do you think you are?
Well, he was right.
And kudos to the program, to the coaching staff, to the program,
and then to the fan base, because it's been a minute since you have somebody on that national level.
I mean, if you say you're one of two running backs,
you're saying you're one of the two best running backs in the country.
That's all American status, coach.
That sounds like Nebraska football, baby.
I'm stunned.
I would have got that wrong if you said how many,
Maxwell Award winners.
Yeah.
To say the rosiers are your only one.
Bach, am I?
Is that stunning to you?
Yeah, quite a bit.
I mean, Eric Crouch, Tommy Fraser,
some of the offensive names that have come through
since then.
Yeah.
Only one.
Well, I guarantee that's not what they're focused on in that locker room.
They're worried about the next game,
Penn State.
But, you know, obviously well deserved,
incredible achievement.
If that's the only thing he achieves, that's amazing.
Yeah.
It's good stuff.
Coach,
thank you for breaking it down for us,
give us insight on the mind of a coach,
especially the University of Nebraska Huster coach.
Thank you for what you do.
Tomorrow's National Signing Day.
We got two guys signing.

We're just going to have you walk down here and tell us yourself.
Sounds good.
There we go.
You just come in and announce it yourself.
Let's go.
Once the signatures,
once the ink's on paper,
come tell us about it.
Let's go.
Thank you, coach.
Bach and Adam.
character and then bach in the black shirt
