Starting point is 00:00:00 Back to one-on-one with DP. Presented by Beatrice Bakeray. On 93-7 The Ticket and The Ticket FM.com. Welcome back. Final segment, Old School, the captain's show with Vashon Jackson. Up next week. Do we know who was on with Vichon today? He's being very secretive with his guest lately. Yeah, like you don't want to be stole, but dude, like, we're just trying to help you promote.
Starting point is 00:00:29 He puts it on Facebook, and if you're not, you know, if I miss the, the stream. I miss it. But stay tuned for that. I would be bouncing around town. Of course, the Big Red Invitational is there. I've got to cover the Big Ten track event. Men's basketball against Iowa tonight at PBA, senior night. So that's that.
Starting point is 00:00:48 The women's gymnastics team faces number one in Michigan tomorrow at the Vanity Center. Women's basketball with their next effort, a chance to finish at 22 wins, 22 and 7. if they can get this win this weekend. So they can move on. Look at Nick, going in the bag. Look at this guy. He's just straight into the bag. Straight into the bag.
Starting point is 00:01:14 Just straight into the bag. Nick, that's mine. Yeah. Straight to the bag. He walks in and goes straight into the bag. Who do we need to thank? Who do we need to thank for the, for the, not chicken Eric?
Starting point is 00:01:25 Not chicken Eric. Thank you. Big that of chili. That's a that of chili, right? It looks delicious. I guess. So we're going to have some of that. Let's go back to Ever Gray, UNLV running reb.
Starting point is 00:01:38 And you've coached men, you've coached women, you've been all over this place, right? This space. I know with your moral foundation, it's important. Like you've kind of moved into a space where you're, because you've seen the other thing, you know what to look for if somebody's stepping wrong or moving in a different kind of,
Starting point is 00:02:02 vibe. Is that a fair statement of affairs? That's true. Right? We're old heads. We've been in those dark corners so we know what it looks like. And then when we see it, we try to help people out. As a coach, athletic director around high school students, how do you maintain or set the standard for engagement, morality, doing the right thing, integrity, character?
Starting point is 00:02:30 How do you move those things forward within your programs and within your school? Well, let me just give you a backstory. So when I first got into coach and I retired, I coached girls. And the reason why I coached girls is because I have girls, my two daughters. And I wanted to learn how to basically talk to them as a parent, but coaching them at the same time. So I do everything. I'm calculated for whatever I do. I do everything for a reason.
Starting point is 00:03:04 And that's why I was just like, let me see if because I'd need to learn how to separate their dad from being a coach. And I should be like, don't ever call me dad. Just call me coach during the games. The windows hole is over. Hey, dad, I'm fine with that. Because the other girls will look at it that way.
Starting point is 00:03:21 The other thing is when it comes to relationships with kids, if they come to me with some problems. If it's over my pay grade, I'm going to the principal. Like you need to talk to your parents, your principal or your parents. I can't give you advice on that. That's not my area. I mean, sometimes, you know, I joke with my kids and all that. We say stupid stuff to each other.
Starting point is 00:03:47 But it's to a point where I know where I can go to this point and leave it along. When you coach, when I coach my girls, like the girls I coach, they're 30 now. DP. They're 30 years old. They're married families and kids, and I love them to death. But when you see that, when I see them out, DP, they steal to me 15
Starting point is 00:04:09 and 16. You know, and that's the way I look at them. And, you know, they still call, like, you know, I have a son now. He's which is crazy. You know, you know Utah, D.P. They get married quick. I'm going to let you say it.
Starting point is 00:04:25 right they get married but you know when you when you're coaching women you've got to look at them like it's your own daughter and you want to protect them and that's the way I still look at
Starting point is 00:04:42 Mariah Durant and Sarah Barron I still know their names because I know all of it you know Lindy Wendy Williams you know it's just they're still
Starting point is 00:04:53 my little girls even though they're grown with families and multiple kids. But when you send your daughter off to wherever you're going to go to school, that's where you want them to kind of be like a trusting parent because you're not there all the time. And D.P., you have a daughter. You know, I love my girls. And I sent my girls.
Starting point is 00:05:17 I didn't. That's where they wanted to go. So they both went to BYU and had successful careers. but when I talked to the coaches when they went there, I'm like, you know, take care of my baby. Hoof. Treat them like you're like it's one of your kids. Right. And they did.
Starting point is 00:05:34 And Sean Oldman at the volleyball coach and the Polynesian. I can't remember the Polynesian rugby coach at BYU, but he's a really good dude. And he took care of my daughters. And that's the main, that's what you get. That's what you want as a parent, knowing that you've got the trust of your coaches to take care of your kids. and because you're not there because coaches are like parents. Coach Tark was like a father figure to me.
Starting point is 00:05:59 And I want someone to be a father figure or a mother figure to my daughter's playing sports. Ever, it's a good hour. I'll text you tomorrow. We'll settle on a day where we can just be consistent in having you on at 10 o'clock
Starting point is 00:06:16 same day each week. So folks can come in and get these stories and get some of the humor and the joy behind how much you love sports. It's always good, my friend. You are your family. Yeah, I appreciate you, D.P. A quick shout out to Ukraine.
Starting point is 00:06:32 I think it's some bull, but, you know, hopefully we can all figure this out, people that's smarter than us. Yep, that's what we're here for. Sharing, I like to get together in the same space. Brother, have a great weekend. Good luck tonight. I'll talk to you next week after you advancing the tournament.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Thank you. I appreciate it. Evergrey, UNLV, NBA, coach, AU ball, mentor, dad to two Olympic-level athletes. Just had a park named after him. We didn't even get to talk about that. He's lived a pretty boring life, apparently. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. And, oh, yeah, he was a major league baseball draft picks as well.
Starting point is 00:07:17 And probably would have been an all-state tight-end receiver. So at six. Not successful. At six, seven and whatever he was not at a lot. Yeah, no. That was trying to tell me. No, not at all. So there's that stuff.
Starting point is 00:07:31 Jeez. He's, he and I got together because we did a Saturday morning show in Salt Lake. And then he became whenever, so my show was with Ron Boone. And but Ron Boone would travel with the Utah Jazz. And so when Ron was on the road, Everick would fill in. And then when I, my husband. I was when I first got there, I was traveling with the Utah Stars WMBA team. So when I was gone, he would step in for me.
Starting point is 00:07:59 And then it would just, he and I ran the street together and did our thing. He played on the CBA and ABA teams that we had there in Salt Lake City. So he was, I had another coach on the bench no matter what it was. You know, traveling, getting insight in Intel, learning how to watch film at a high level. understanding basketball schemes. Everick wasn't as exceptional at it. We'll have him do some film study as we go forward because he knows these sports in a way that is unique and authentic.
Starting point is 00:08:34 So we'll include that in. I know folks want it to be basically all Nebraska, but he can break down Nebraska athletics too. Break down a little bit. Speaking of the Utah stars who became the San Antonio stars, who became the Las Vegas Aces, they lost their big girl. Elizabeth Cambage,
Starting point is 00:08:50 with the Los Angeles Sparks. She's her own level now. She's leveled up. She's leveled up. Sad. My team lost the big star, but it's all right. They still have Asia Wilson and they still have Kelsey Plum. People forget about Kelsey Plum.
Starting point is 00:09:04 Yeah, but she's easy to watch. She's easy to follow. She makes it there. And realize I keep forgetting she's six and nine. Yeah. She can go. Up next. for Sean Jackson, Captain's show.
Starting point is 00:09:22 You guys have a great weekend. I will talk to you all Sunday. How many events are you going to this weekend? So Sunday up bowling in the morning. Okay. back here for Sunday morning pancakes with Norrie and Brand Banks. so that makes a difference. I hope you guys love what we do,
Starting point is 00:09:53 or at least don't mind hanging out with us while we do it. Captain's show up next. Y'all have a great weekend. Three words. Go. Big red.
