Back to one-on-one with DP, presented by Beatrice Makeray on 93-7 the ticket and the ticketfm.com.
Welcome back, one-on-one, 93-7, the ticket 4-2-464-5685, Sartor-a-hamey-Mand-tax line, Honda-Lincoln hotline if you want to call in.
We're talking Nebraska.
We're talking Creighton.
We're talking families, loyalties, communities, et cetera.
Who wants to, Roger?
Roger's on the Honda Lincoln Hotline.
Roger, what's up this morning?
Well, I'm calling about Creighton, and I'm a big Hester basketball fan and have been for a long time, but more than that, I'm just a fan of good basketball.
And Creighton is fun to watch because they're a good team, they're a well-coached team, and they are in Nebraska, even though they're in Omaha.
It's still part of Nebraska.
So I like to watch them and follow them, and except for when they play Nebraska, I like to see them win.
but I really like their coach.
I think he's a pretty good guy, pretty classy guy.
He had to slip up last year with the stupidity where he made the stupid comment.
But, you know, he's a pretty decent person and a damn good coach.
And they got a lot of good players.
And really, Creighton's been relevant.
I was a kid growing up in Northeast Nebraska, got the Omaha World Herald.
So I used to read about Creighton a lot in the World Herald.
and going way back.
I mean, they were relevant back in the 60s in college basketball.
They played St. Bonaventure and beat Bob Lanier one year.
And Paul Silas used to play for him.
I mean, they've had some great coaches over the years.
But, you know, I hate to be non-controversial, whatever.
I just like to watch good basketball.
And so I cheer for Creighton at this time of year
because they're usually still playing, you know.
you're not wrong roger this is and thanks for calling thank you roger yeah it's not so folks you get to
understand i'm not saying you're wrong if you root for crayton i'm not saying you're right if you
root for crayton what i'm saying is again i'm walking into this space with a clean palette
so i'd like for things to make sense nothing makes sense
and that's what makes sense
I'm finding that out
The only thing that makes sense
is that nothing makes sense
Well I guess
I could go through with blinders on
And not care
About why people feel the way they do
But I'm not wired that way
I'm wired to find out
Why you care about the thing you care about
Or why you don't care about the thing you don't care about
I don't think you're ever going to find that one
Like as a whole
You're going to find you know
People are going to have their reasons
But I don't think you're going to find
a reason as to why
some Husker fans
despise Creighton and some Husker fans
like Roger are just like, yeah, I mean,
I won't root for them when they play Nebraska,
but other than that, yeah, sure, they can go ahead and be good.
I don't care.
I am wired
to understand.
Like, I find comfort
and grace
and connection.
So if I'm disconnected from it,
which means that I don't care
and become indifferent about it.
In this space, I don't want to do that
to people who love Creighton or like Creighton
or are curious about Creighton.
Me personally, I don't find them to be interesting.
But that's just me.
Now, there may be a thing that happens
that makes them interesting to me.
But to this point that hasn't happened
in 59 plus years.
Did Doug McDermen not do a fourth?
for you? No. National player of the year?
No. No. Not at all.
Dougie McBuckets. No, no.
Sixth, all time in scoring in NCAA history?
Or was it eighth? These are the top ten?
Stop. That didn't do it for you? No, really didn't.
Okay.
Really didn't. Well, if that's not going to do it for you. I don't know what will.
No, it'd be interesting.
That's about as interesting as they've been.
Be interesting. Like, I mean, what? I don't get it.
Pushing, pushing whoever, I don't even remember who they face.
Kansas to the limit with missing two of their best players?
That didn't do it for you?
No.
No.
Paul Silas didn't do it for me.
Benoit Benjamin didn't do it.
Kyle Corver didn't do it for me.
Gregory Ekinike.
No, did not do it for me.
Did not do it for me.
And that's okay too.
The transfer from wreckers.
I'll say that.
Alex O'Connell?
No.
AOC doesn't do it for you.
No, I, I, look, look.
I became a Kyle fan when he was at Creighton.
I became a bigger fan when he was with Utah
because I understood what he was doing there
and how important he was there.
But I think there is a bit of hypocrisy.
Well, Ryan says this.
Because I despise Creighton fans because one part of the day
they were against Nebraska and four Creighton in one sport
and then turn around a roof for Nebraska football or volleyball.
That's not right.
Pick one.
There's some validity to that.
Like there's some real juice to that.
that yeah oh you kind of love me
like you like
and we all know what kind of love
part time love
I love I love all of you
except for this one little thing about you
I love it that you know
that's all they're saying is I love everything
about you except for this one little bit
it makes it it always makes me
Larry David
well
love everything about you
except the way that you chew with your mouth open
when we eat at fancy restaurants
that's the only thing other than that you're perfect
That's what they're saying.
I just...
I love everything about you.
I just can't take you to this one restaurant.
I just, as I said, I want to understand.
Roger thinks of all.
And just hate the way you eat wings.
Yeah.
That's all that is.
Yeah, you know, pull it from the end.
What are you doing?
What are you doing?
You just lost half of people because they don't know how to eat wings.
They really don't know how to eat wings.
I'll ask you, RICO, because I went into this space this weekend in a good space.
I went into the sports, the hustle.
sports base in a good place.
Because I thought at the end of this weekend,
I thought Nebraska baseball will be 500
or headed to 500 with a win on Tuesday.
That will not be the case.
I felt really good about women's softball.
And look, to say that they're 19 and 9,
and not only are they playing well,
but they're playing and they're having fun while they do it.
It looks like this team has connected
and they're bonded and they're doing.
in their thing. It's a blast.
I also
as wrestling went to the
nationals, went to the NCAA nationals.
And we talked on
Friday and I said you can count on
four national all Americans.
There was eight, right? They took eight.
They took eight, eight qualified
five made all Americans.
Which means you're in the top eight. You have to
finish in the top eight in the finals. And
that's no easy task, especially
the way you have to go through it. Because I mean,
there's a ton of matches that they've got to go
through. And if you lose early, it becomes
even more complicated and more difficult.
Yeah. But I listened to some folks
talked about Mark Manning
last week and saying, well, geez, you know, he hasn't
won a national
title. He hasn't been a big
10 champion since Jordan Burrow, et cetera,
et cetera. But to me,
that's not the measurement of how
well he's doing with this program. And you're
talking about recruiting, development,
and then
the amount of work being put
in for these folks, the improvement of
of the wrestlers. So let's talk about Ridge Lovett who struggled, had his moments of struggle this
season. And then, oh, by the way, I'm going to compete. I'm going to go ahead and win my way
through and compete in the finals. I'm going to beat the number two wrestler in my weight class.
Right? Like it was pretty exceptional to watch. And then, of course, there are people,
there are even folks online and folks online need to grow up. But there are folks who, yeah,
really, did he get lucky? No, he didn't get lucky.
Wrestling is not a luck sport.
No.
It's not a luck sport.
And then the four other All-Americans who, again, who battle,
there could have been a sixth in CJ Red.
There could have been others who could have stepped up.
But I wanted to give the wrestling team credit.
They finished fifth in the country.
I think they finished fifth in the Big Ten.
Right.
We understand how deep the Big Ten is.
Folks understand how deep this is.
Oh, yeah.
And true, what Penn State is doing is just incredible.
Wild.
And then to have, like, they went through a run where they went through a streak all up until, you know, the heavyweights.
Where they were just dominating every weight class.
Penn State, Penn State, Penn State.
So Bravo to that.
And then, look, Gabe Steven is just different.
It's just different.
And I still think I love it.
I still think it's wild and not in a bad way.
I think it's wild that you can have an Olympic gold medalist come back to college.
And that's just like so cool.
Well, there were people who were really upset about that though.
Why?
Well, he's an Olympian and he's like he's under contract with the WWE.
Yeah, but that's not, but that's not this.
Well, that part, right?
Like it is that.
That's, WWE is not this.
He's under professional contract for wrestling.
but it's not this.
It really is not this, right?
He's being paid.
They're like, well, we don't want him there if he's under contract and obligation.
You're just mad because he's helping out the sport.
Why would you be mad that he's helping your sport?
And doing it at 263 pounds against 285 pound dudes.
Crazy.
Like, to watch him, like, and I loved that he actually paid tribute.
At the finals.
So it's a thing that gladiators do.
When they're done, they will leave their shoes,
their whatever thing, they'll leave it in the ring.
And he sat there and then he could get a good little bit.
Tied really tight.
Right?
Of course they are.
And then he just sat there in the middle of the ring on the mats.
And he just, for a moment, you could see him just kind of go,
wow.
And to hear Big Ten and National things.
fans give acknowledgement to the career that he's had in a sport that is not always highlighted.
No.
And he did it in a way that people can be respectful.
Now, every other headway to Big Ten is like, thank you.
Thank God, he's gone.
Like every year you show up at Big Ten meets going, oh, you're here again?
Oh, wait, Minnesota's here?
Dang it.
Are you here again, dude?
Don't you have something else?
Don't you have a contract to honor?
Shouldn't you be talking to like Stone Coastie Lawson or something?
Yeah, it's going to be.
So, of course, the speculation is how they're going to use him,
but it's going to be exceptional along the way.
And again, for the folks who pay attention,
for what baseball did Friday night and then what happened Sunday,
like they're both who this team is.
They're both.
Sorry, they're both.
They're a team that won't give us.
up and Gritty over pretty and they will grind and then there were days days and plays where
they would do things that make you scratch your head.
That's who Husker baseball is this year.
Can I go back to wrestling for like half a second?
I know you want to go into wrestling.
I love when you want to talk about it.
I just wanted to say, did you see the video of Rob for Nebraska and team or for Arizona
State after their, just both of them just lay in there?
And it was just everybody just giving them so much praise.
Jordan Burroughs retweeted it.
and he's like, this is what it should be all about.
And leave it all out there.
They were both laying there.
They kind of turn over to each other, like still on their backs, like shake hands,
and they're just done.
They emptied their tanks for that national meeting.
It was, it was beautiful.
It's, the only thing about nationals is I want every match to be seen.
That's the hard part.
There's so much going on.
There's so much going on. Formats at a time.
There's a lot to deal with.
Just give me a quad box.
Whoa.
So at the event, there is a feed at these, so, but most fans don't know to look for them.
But there's a feed, a production feed.
that gives you all, like it gives you the quad box.
It gives you scores and all the graphics and all that stuff.
But they don't share it.
You have to kind of know.
You got to find it.
You got to know to look for it.
Because they want you to go to the regular broadcast and watch what they think is going to be the best match of that time.
Well, they need the TV rating.
Yeah.
Which is, you know, picking the best of the best.
Because with the quad box, you can't really give commentary because there's four matches going on.
You need the commentary.
I just want to see what's going on.
Yeah, but they want to give their commentary.
They have the commentators there.
they want them to do whatever.
Each mat has its own commentary.
Yeah, see, you got four.
You can't have four commentaries.
No, they do.
They have four at each mat.
No, but I'm saying if you did the quad box,
like you would have to like choose a box and get that commentary.
It's the same thing you do on NFL.
NFL Red Zone.
Yeah, like you pick the game you want to hear.
Let's do it.
So we'll do better.
We'll do better.
I think they should do that with track meets as well.
I'd be a fan of that.
Because you never see the field events.
There's just whatever's going on on the track
and then they'll show you a highlight of something.
Yeah, yeah,
field event hate is real.
I need my long jump live.
I need to.
I actually like the throw events.
I was a jumper.
Hammer throw is.
I was a jumper.
So I always thought,
like the only reason I want to watch the jumps is to see how many different ways
jumpers run.
Like there's no universal way to,
some of them run terribly.
Like, it's like gymnast in the vault.
Like I.
But they're form.
is so impeccable that it doesn't matter.
No, it's perfect for them, but it's perfect
only for them.
To watch gymnasts on the vault
is the most dynamically confusing thing
I've ever...
They're karate chopping the air.
I don't understand what it is.
Have you ever tried to run like that?
It's not fun.
I can't do...
I can't run the way gymnast run
because none of them run the same way.
Or the straight arm.
Yeah, it's just weird.
Like, they haven't taught, like,
how are you trying to get mad at?
maximum speed. They haven't been taught. You do you.
It works, obviously.
They're much greater than I am. So look, run however way you can run.
It's true.
To get there. All right, we'll toward the break. We'll come back. We'll close out.
