Coming at you live from the heart of Lincoln America,
a 93-7-the-ticket and the Ticketfm.com,
sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation.
Here is your host, Derek Pearson.
Our number two, on just a pretty cool sports day,
if the weather plays along.
If the weather plays along,
there's a super regional game one at Bowling Stadium.
Ronald Revelle Field
Huskers
Cowboys
Game 1
Best of 3
could be special
We'll talk about last night
and then we'll talk about today
in Omaha
The weather was so interesting
that the state decided
that the tournament
The championship games will be moved
to Saturday
So
there'll be state championships
three tomorrow.
We will air them beginning at 12 noon.
And we'll go through the day Saturday.
Of course, we will have during the breaks in those games,
we will have post-game conversations about softball,
baseball, appropriately so, whenever that is.
We will have full coverage.
We'll have folks in Omaha.
Of course, Bach can tell you about that.
Here's shortly about what's going on in Omaha,
what the vibe is for big.
10s. Huskers
scheduled to take the field today
at 5 if the weather
permits. They're currently on a
weather delay, so the likelihood of it being
5 o'clock, pretty
limited. But we'll talk about it.
Bach, the vibe. The vibe.
What is the vibe at
Big 10, Omaha?
Well, right now you said it's rain,
unfortunately. They are
scheduled to get going here
in a couple minutes to resume
the first game of the day.
which is USC in Michigan State, USC up four to nothing over Michigan State.
There's kind of been the darling of the tournament so far.
So that's been kind of cool.
But USC looking to put them away now into single elimination portion of the tournament.
Nebraska, of course, earned their way past that,
which is interesting as about its whole.
I mean, they're changing the Big Ten tournament every year in the format that they're doing it in.
It's interesting because through the first games in the matchups,
you'll notice Nebraska is taking on a higher seed than,
than what Michigan State or Oregon are doing despite finishing higher in the standings than them.
Same thing with UCLA.
So they didn't recede after the double elimination portion.
Maybe they'll consider that in the future.
Maybe they won't.
But yeah, it's been very interesting.
It's just, it's awesome to have baseball back in Omaha.
They have to fight for that big 10 tournament at times.
But of course, you know, the College World Series being there, you can't help but start to kind of dream and think about that as well.
A lot of teams are.
But then on the other side of it, you know, there's not a, there's on the NIT.
This is the it.
This is it for a lot of teams.
So it is it is,
it is survive in advance mode
ahead of the NCAA tournament
for many of those teams.
Yeah.
And it's interesting in the focus.
The focus that is
Nebraska baseball and what the coach
you said, what Will Bolt and company are,
are the conversations they're having with players.
Do you manage and prepare
as though this is the one only gate?
And there's a lot to be said for that, right?
Bach, what is your thought on the philosophy of game?
You're in the quarterfinals, single elimination.
You're also the two seed.
So there's some advantage in it, right?
You haven't had to burn pitchers and go through the seesaw that is rain delay,
change of opponent, et cetera, et cetera.
You've just been chilling.
You're relaxing.
You're recovering.
you're building steam.
Is it all hands on deck, all arms on deck for game one?
Or do you let the game kind of play out and trust the process?
Yeah, it's interesting, obviously, because, you know, normally your Friday starter, right,
would be good to go here.
But do you want to keep your Friday starter for the championship appearance?
But who knows if you get there, right?
So, you know, I think you got, I think you got a battle forward.
You got to put your best foot forward and try to win.
maybe you kind of start to think about innings, you know, that are that are being eaten up and all that sort of stuff.
If you have a decent lead, maybe going into the middle endings here this evening.
But, I mean, I think you're there to win it, right?
I mean, especially for Nebraska, having won each of the last two years, I mean, there's got to be a pride factor there.
And then the opportunity not only to host a regional, but maybe a super regional if you come out of this whole thing and perhaps even have the chance to upsend number one at UCLA, not in the big 10 in the nation.
So, I mean, I think, I think this is, it is a little bit more calming.
Like I said, some team, Michigan State, when they lose, that's going to be it.
Nebraska, at least you know that you can fight for the championship after this.
So, but at the same time, you know, I think this is, this is, you're trying to start
get going and getting ready for when, when you are in regionals, you want to be hot and feeling good.
Nebraska has been so far.
But, yeah, no, I think you've got to take it a game at a time.
Again, maybe circumstantially start to think about that.
depending on how the game goes.
But you got to win this one before you can play Saturday.
There's no guarantee.
Yeah, I'm in those situations,
kind of state tournament level,
that I was always,
you could get caught up in the conversation that,
well, I think our number two is good enough to get it done, right?
Do we trust the number two, right, to get it done?
Do we trust the number three to get it done?
And quite frankly, then the question becomes,
is it matchup?
Is it matchups that play into it?
You've had the full week rest.
So everybody's arm is fresh.
What do you do with your one, two, and three?
And then closer, set up men, your batting order, what do you do?
I'll ask the texters, because I am curious.
Let's say it's a bumpy start.
How quickly do you pull your starter?
Jake Baco.
Well,
you got to be able,
it depends on your belief, obviously,
in those middle inning relief
pitchers as well. I like what they got on the
back end. But, you know,
I think you might, you might consider it
somewhat early. Nebraska, but the strength of this
lot, you know, they've got some solid pitchers. Don't
get me wrong, especially starting pitchers, you know,
Yasa at the front of it.
But this is a group
that is routinely,
pretty much like not ever out of the game.
I mean, you could be down eight runs.
They could come back in the seventh or eighth inning because of that lineup.
So, you know, I would, I would, I think that gives you a little bit more flexibility.
I mean, if you're, if you're down four or you get rocked for four early, maybe you can kind of think, well, let's just kind of, he got through it there.
Let's throw him back out there, see if we can get this because a four run lead isn't necessarily a distance for Nebraska.
Well, what the other end of the spectrum?
What if you put up an eight burger and then a four, right?
You have a lead.
Do you pull your ace to save him for later?
That I would consider.
That I might consider.
Right?
Like I, listen, you get some people in the lab when it comes to making those decisions.
I worked from this.
Play as though this was everything.
We'll figure the, because that's how we got here, first of all,
you're two seed and you're a lock for the NCAA.
But you played that, you got that way by playing a certain way.
Play that certain way, managed from a very certain way.
That's really what it was.
We were having that conversation last night as well,
even during warm-up, it's a softball because it was,
what did you expect Coach Rhonda Ravel to do?
Would she go with Jensen or Jordy Frum?
It is the best of three,
the most important game is the first one, right?
Because it allows you extension and some wiggle room.
What say you?
You start your starter, you start your ace in game one,
softball did last night.
What about baseball?
Yeah, I mean, I think you do.
I think you do because, I mean, again,
it's interesting because you could do the reverse math
and say we need our ace for Sunday.
But, again, if you're not guaranteed that,
I mean, how bad would it be to lose?
and you know, you never get the throw crossing you I saw on the mound.
I'm not losing.
I'm not losing with my ace sitting in my hand.
Like, I'm not going to do that.
So it becomes the thing.
And it's interesting, too, then I thought a big part of the process for last night.
Paying attention to crowds.
How would you describe Big Ten tournament crowds so far?
Well, I think somewhat to be expected, waiting for Nebraska to show up.
I mean, there's been some good, decent crowds as far as, you know, a good, you know,
maybe a couple hundred Iowa fans, that sort of stuff.
Yeah.
You know, from the locals that have made it in a couple of, you know, other teams may be
well represented.
But, I mean, it's pretty sparse compared to what it's going to be for Nebraska.
And this is when business picks up.
Right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Bill and Bennett says all hands on deck, including pitchers.
And I, listen, the belief, if I'm good enough to worry about competing for
big 10 title NCAA title i'm good enough to get through whatever comes up like that's the
belief i if i start pulling back uh you know utensils off the if i start bringing up equipment off
the off the tool belt um i'm without that equipment and i just don't i'm not a believer in it as a coach
or a player i never really cared like i wanted the best available out there and then we'll figure out
the rest of it. Let's get a win and then we'll figure out the rest of it. Last night,
got to bowling early, right? Got to bowling early, two hours plus for the game. And the crowd,
some of those folks have been there all day. And by all day, I mean morning, early morning
all day, to get general admission seats. And that's just to get your location. Like, where do you
like where in the bleachers you're going to be,
get there early enough to be one of the first ones
into the bleachers, right? Pick your side
and then pick your level seat.
You can do that for how many ever folks
you can do that until.
But there were, it was a forearm tentacle
of fans.
So you have people that
down the right field line
spiraled into the front
and across the way of the Salt Dogs
offices.
and that space, then full cycle down the circle.
And then to the right, down the left field line,
which wrapped around the stadium into center field
beyond the center field wall.
And I literally was trying to capture something on film.
Buck, I got tired from two lines.
Two lines, I was like, oh my goodness, this is, this is a thing.
And people were there, they were cheering and the whole shebe.
And then finally, they opened the gates.
So they will open the gates.
Last night, they opened the gates an hour before first page.
So I would imagine the gates are open at 3 o'clock there.
We do need to send somebody down there to see if there's anybody in line right now.
Because I'm wondering whether the energy was sapped from this thing or not.
But I can't, I'm going to fully say,
it was standing room only in full.
There was no more room on the berm.
There was like,
there's no more blanket space.
Like you couldn't put a blanket down.
And now people were standing against the back of the berm,
like where the rail and the fence are.
There are tons of people standing up and down the first base and third base lines.
There are people in the outfield.
As a matter of fact, there are people trying to climb the fence.
So there's that.
So I would think that it was, I would,
did they release an attendance number?
Because people came in and checked in, right?
Yeah, yeah.
So would they have had an attendance number?
And would it, does it count?
Because quite frankly, you're talking about for game one,
there may be more people who went to game one than any other
because it was actually two nights and you're going to have different people, though.
right yeah looks like no official tenant's figure was no i would think that they hit 4 000
wow i thought they hit 4 000 plus um just the standing room only factor and again those people
were in line it took them 48 minutes to get the line clear and it was interesting to come up
and then they they got the game started
And I thought you could hear people whispering, the rumblings, Bach.
Oh, they're looking for lightning.
They're looking for lightning.
And the rule is, and it was this way in high school, no matter where I was,
but if an official saw lightning in the sky anywhere,
at any range or any distance, you pulled the game.
You pulled the players in the crowd.
And when the first light,
lightning strike happened, I saw it, but a lot of people didn't see it.
And immediately, I'm like, I wonder if the umpire saw it.
I wonder if the homepan empire saw.
He did.
He did.
They go into, and then it's a full clearing of the stadium.
All those people who have been standing in line in that space, then had to line up and
reverse out, back out of the stadium.
And because the saw dogs were playing at the same time, and then
I think they saw lightning too
that they allowed softball fans to go
into Haymarket and
get on the concourse under cover.
And then finally,
and it rained
pretty well. It was pretty hard.
Shout out to the DJ
of Bowling State.
Shout out to the DJ because he
broke out, he or she broke out
Bach, they broke out
every rain song you can imagine.
It's, you know, it's
purple rain. It's Adel's
fire through the rain. It's
Eddie,
uh, any money.
Is it any money or Eddie
rabbit? Ed Rabbit.
Any money? No,
Eddie Rabbit. Eddie Rabbit.
Uh, I love a rainy night.
Yeah. Yeah. Money and Rabbit are not
the same. They're not
the same.
Um,
so he's like, and it's
pouring and thundering and there's
Adel's fire in the rain, blaring, you're
and then to watch the field crew back and forth to watch that go on.
And then they decide.
They're like, you know, and there's a lot of conversation between NCAA officials,
the umpires, the coaches, and they're kind of going back and forth and back and forth.
And then finally, they decide they're going to try to get the game in.
But, you know, you know, journalists, man, the media folks are like, yeah,
but there's another cell coming in 10 minutes.
Like, you know, it's not going to happen.
It takes you, you know, 35 minutes to warm.
up, right, can't just say, okay, everybody back on the field play ball.
They've got to warm up and you've got a lot of that.
You've got field prep, you know, you've got to remake the field and then it starts
right now, Bob, you could feel the room because I felt bad for the PA announcement
because he's down, got to tell people, listen, I'm sorry.
Do not kill the messenger, but everybody has to go home.
there'll be no softball today.
And so that 3,500 that came back in,
so the 4,000 had been in and out.
The 3,500 was in and out.
There were even people who left their blankets on the berm
during the storm.
Keep your spot.
That you would rather keep your spot.
Now, you have a spot,
but you can't sit on the blanket.
It's wet, it's wet ground and a wet blanket.
Yeah.
So I would say that of the 150 blankets that were when the game started,
there were probably 10.
And there are people who got back on those blankets.
Now, they did a full thing.
And you're waiting for it to happen.
And I'm with Jake Sorensen and Nick Wyman.
And Jake Sorensen is not happy.
Yeah.
But he is not, y'all know Jake.
Can we talk?
Can we talk?
We're family.
Who's going to wake up early for?
work. We're family, right? He wants you to know he's got to get up early. Yeah, yeah. He's got to get up early.
And I'm looking at him like, and, and they announced a 10-10-first restart. And it's 10-13. And Jake is just
sitting with his arms folded, tapping his toe. Like, you said 10-10. Let's get this thing going.
And I'm like, Jake, it's not happening. It's just not happening. It's just not happened. So there was tons of things
going on. Great music.
I have to
say that Boland's
burgers seem
better than Haymarket.
Interesting.
I had a cheeseburger, Boland, and
I've been a real food snack when it comes to
Haymarket Stadium food.
That thing that you see, Bach, is called
the sun. Oh, okay.
That's called the sun. The sun is out.
It calls the sun, right?
It just seemed like
like Bach had a burger.
And then it was really good.
I thought, okay, cool.
Jake went to the concession stand.
He grabbed some sunfire seeds for me.
And then I go into autopilot.
You give me a bag of sunfire seeds.
I'm, listen, I know the exact amount I can hold in my hand,
how I'm going to distribute them.
And then Jake, shout out to Jake Sorenson for realizing I'm a real sunfire seeds man.
So when he buys the seeds, he asks,
for a cup for me to put the season into.
You know, be spitting all over.
Now, there are, there are members of the media who didn't follow that creed.
Those, those shells were everywhere.
And I went, tell me you didn't play ball without telling me you didn't play ball.
Because I think that's, I think that's a baseball thing that, listen, you know better.
And I, there are times when I coached high schools.
that had turf, you cannot have seeds on turf.
No athletic director will allow.
Why?
Shells.
Shell.
So, you know, there's Jake Sores and there's some media members,
and those media members are going for it,
and I'm just not feeling.
I am not feeling it.
So it was interesting, the whole thing.
And again, we'll see what today is.
I did.
So I was pretty well.
well prepared yesterday for the rain. I have this, this, this full below the knee poncho.
Nice. That I, it folds up and I had it in my backpack. So it would start raining. They're ducking
and dodges. I'm like, ah, poncho. Like, I win. I'm the winner. Is it a red ponto? No, it's a black
black. Black, okay. Black poncho. Um, I, I got stuck wearing a
Maryland poncho at Big Ten.
Did you really?
Because it was raining for that for the first two days.
Yeah.
And I just went, ah,
but it's Maryland.
Did you buy one?
They give it to you?
Oh, yeah.
I support the program.
Yeah.
You know, go ahead and do that.
I don't want to be that guy.
Hey, give me a poncho.
No, no.
It's okay.
So Hunter says,
are they trying to do softball game today yet today?
Four o'clock.
4 o'clock and we have some sun we have we have we have some sunshine happening right now in lincoln
and again i don't know how long it's going to be there and i don't know uh jake gave Bach gave his
his uh his weather report uh Bach do you want to give that report again a current up update
yeah man let me get back to Lincoln i'm switching between Lincoln and omaha all day trying to figure
it out right uh says there could be a 35 percent chance of of rain uh for at one o'clock the rain will go on
through or you know maybe maybe here and there but looks like it's projected to go through
five o'clock toward six o'clock and again with that four p.m. start time could see some more
delays there. Try to get through. I can just try to get through it. There's a lot of things you've
found out field crew handling the tarp and handling all the water on the tarp and then the
redistribution of said water into the outfield and how miserable those outfielers would have
been had they tried to play.
There's the question of whether with two aces on the bump,
inside the circle,
you did not want them to stop, start, stop, stop, start.
And I think that played a big part of it.
Tordana was on the field quite a bit with the amps
and the powers that be.
I would have loved to have had that mic down.
That's going to be my next mission to somehow sneak a microphone
into the umpires back.
pocket. Yeah, ESPN had the cameras on that the whole time. I noticed Troy was laughing quite a bit.
So it must have been some trying to figure it out. Something going on. Hey, man. All right.
